Solve : Hidden/Protected folder and files?

Answer»

My motherboard and CPU were fryed in a storm. When I INSTALLED new hardware, Windows XP installed again over my old VERSION. My old user name was password protected and a folder was hidden. I know the folder still exsists because I can see it, but I cannot access it. (access Denied). I THOUGHT I COULD uninstall windows (current version) and Repair the old version, But I cannot uninstall. Is there a WAY I can boot up in the old version of windows XP to retrieve the folder and files or is there a way to access it another way? You need to take ownership of the folder.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

The next step will be to backup all important data, reformat the drive and reinstall Windows the correct way.

Solve : Runner Error - Help, please!?

Answer»

When I start my computer up, I get a "runner error" message that reads "invalid backweb application id "137903". Can someone please tell me if this can be fixed? ThanksCan you post some more information on your computer?
Information such as your operating system, hardware, when this started happening, your malware protection and if you changed anything before this started happening, would be helpful

I think I read somewhere that Backweb is spyware, but I'm not dead sure
Post some more INFO and we'll see what we can doYour spyware removal program deleted a needed file on your HP or COMPAQ computer. See if you can have the spyware removal program restore the file. This link has more info:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00061410

Hmm, so Backweb isn't spyware after all?
I just assumed it was because on my old desktop Spybot S&D picked it up and deleted it, and then I couldn't figure out why a Kodak camera program wouldn't work, must've been something to do with that.....Backweb was used to get updates to older Compaq systems. Perhaps they still use it? It was a resource hog and caused PROBLEMS in my experience.I have a HP Pavilion a520n running Windows XP Home Edition. I not sure what else you need as I am not very computer literate. My son downloads music from the internet to Windows Media Player alot. He also visits Myspace.com. I have The Shield as my antivirsus software. I was using Norton before, but started have trouble with it and removed it from computer. I contacted HP and they were no help in solving the problem. They kept saying I would probably have to reset to when I first purchased the computer. I want to avoid doing that if possible. I have to much info to lose. ThanksDid you check the link pcdoc4christ gave you?
I had a look and it tells you how to solve it, although it mentions the possibility of losing files
It also says you can just uninstall the software to fix itI did look at the link. Do you think the software updates are important? It depends what the updates are for
I would say they're probably not important, you can update Windows automatically and if you need driver updates you can get them from the manufacturer's WEBSITE, same with other software
Someone else correct me if I'm wrong though

EDIT: Quote from site - "Updates from HP or Compaq Connections is a messaging service that comes pre-installed on HP and Compaq desktop computers. The service provides product notices, support updates, tips, and special offers specifically for your model of HP or Compaq PC."
It doesn't seem necessary to me, again correct me if I'm wrong please
If there's something really important, they'll post it on the website, you don't need that running all the time just to tell you the odd thingHP printers also install Backweb...i don't buy them. Quote

Famous last words. When that hard drive dies, and they all do, that information will be lost forever. You need to start WORKING on a backup strategy now. Quote

Good point. "Needed" was not the best adjective for me to use to describe the file.

Solve : need to import outlook xp to outlook 2002?

Answer»

thanks in advance for the help!
I have my contacts .pst file exported from my old work computer using Office XP - outlook 2003+.
My new work computer is using Outlook 2002 and nary the two shall meet.
is there another utility to CHANGE the file I have into a format that Outlook 2002 will accept?
I cannot access the old computer or I would just export into .csv, import into the older version and be done with it.

Anybody help? How to import .pst file data into Outlook:

1. On the File menu, click Import And Export. If the menu item is not available, hover your pointer over the chevrons at the bottom of the menu, and then click Import and Export.

2. Click Import from another program or file., and then click Next.

3. Click Personal FOLDER File (.pst), and then click Next.

4. Type the path and the name of the .pst file that you want to import, and then click Next.

5. Select the folder that you want to import, or select the top of the hierarchy to import everything, and then click Finish.
Exactly-
However, my problem arises because I am trying to go backwards. The file is from a later version of Outlook than I am trying to import to. The Errow message is:
...not COMPATIBLE with this version of the Persoanl Folders information service. Contact your administrator.
Here is the LONG way to do it. It may be a choice you have to use to complete the process. If you have a machine that RUNS Outlook 2003... you can drag and drop messages to a new folder and move the folder to the new machine (or older machine)and drag and drop the mail back to Outlook 2002. the files are saved as a *.eml extension. Now , that won't pull the address book... but atleast you will have your email.Oh yah, I guess I can go through my home computer that is running 2003 and then re-export it into csv. Duh... thanks!

Solve : XP NON RESPONSIVE?

Answer»

OCCASIONALLY I BOOT UP AND TOWER LIGHTS COME ON H/D RUNS EVERYTHING LOOKS NORMAL BUT SCREEN DOES NOT ACTIVATE. SCREEN PILOT LIGHT FLASHES . CHANGED SCREENS - STILL SAME PROBLEM. UNPLUG MAINS AND REPLUG SCREEN PLUG AT BACK OF TOWER - AFTER ABOUT 5 MIN IT THEN BOOTS NORMALLY. :-? 1. CHECKED ON POWER OPTIONS CTRL PANEL SAYS UPS NOT ACTVATED BUT NO OPTION AVAILABLEFirst, turn off the CAPS lock key, unless it is broken too. That is considered rude.

To get any meaningful help you need to GIVE some information about the system, how old it is, when the problem started, other problems with it, what happened unusual right before it.

So info on the computer including the make and model number and the power supply, including maker and wattage (it's on the side of the power supply inside the case).

See below. We'll be waiting for your responses.

Solve : keys on keyboard?

Answer»

some of the keys on my keyboard do not respond to their sign on it. for example the speech marks on top of the 2 gives out an and the key gives out " how can i sort this out.
thanks.I would try a different keyboard to see if the RESULT is the same. If it is then Keyboard layout could be the culprit. You can look at the REGIONAL and language options > details> and check and see what the keyboard layout language is. Mine is US.Hummmmmmmmmmm .......... What kind of a keyboard are you using ? On my keyboards , the sign and the digit 2 are on the same key.

dl65 i used this keyboard before it was fine but when i got a new hardrive and INSTALLED win xp again it became messed up.Sounds to me like XP has defaulted to a US keyboard, but you are using a UK keyboard. Go to the control panel-->regional settings, and REMOVE all REFERENCES to the US.

If only it were that easy in real life.

Solve : Windows Activation Issue?

Answer»

I just recently formated then reinstalled XP home on my old LAPTOP using one of the dell cd's which comes with your computer when you buy it. I have done this before with no problems but now affter I install windows I ACTIVATE it as prompted to do within 30 days and then when 30 days is up it says "Windows must be activated" so I hit ok and it logs me out of windows...and there is no way around this cycle. This is pretty stupid...I am trying to get this laptop up to par so I can sell it to someone but this hinders that.

Any help would be great. Contact Microsoft. I think you only get 3 ACTIVATIONS with a copy of XP before you have to contact the mothership.

If the copy of XP came with another computer, you cannot legally install it on this one, and it will cause problems with the activation on the other machine it is installed on.

Microsoft demands you be legal. One copy of Windows for each machine.Yeah its legal its the purple cd which includes sp2. Would you happen to know Microsofts phone number where I could speak to someone about this?1-800-MICROSOFT?LoL...well I have never had any luck contacting them by 800 number but I will try that :-?Be SURE to tell them that we said Hi...

Solve : IP problems!?

Answer»

To the point. Received a used laptop with WIN XP. Could not release IP address (ipconfig /release) at home with Comcast service. Tech tried to help to no avail. Was told card probably bad. Took it to BEST buy to the G Squad. They released it, and got it working on their network. Returned home - can not release. Took it back to Best Buy - ran WinFixto reset registries. Worked again in the store. Came home - once again no luck. No /release or /renew. Please help with any suggestions. THANK you.Do you have another card to try with? It could be finnicky.

Are the Workgroup names correct and matching? Can you see other wireless workgroup in your NEIGHBORHOOD?
I can not even get it to read IP through hardwire from the modem. It will not release the default IP numbers on the laptop. So I can not connect with Internet.XP wont configure cards to the network I USE (I dont know enough to say why) But I found that if I manually set the IP, DNS, Gateway, it works insteasd of relying on windows to assign it a static IP... sometimes Windows just thinks to hard about stuff and screws it all up...do u know exactly what they did?? to get to work over there Quote

because it microsoft and all of their software has glitches and bugs in it.At Best Buy all they did was go to command and typed:ipconfig /release which released the default IP and then ipconfig /renew. I can not get the computer to repeat this at home. It simply will not release and assign a new IP. Any suggestions besides manually setting all the numbers for IP, DNS and others. Thank you.see it doesnt work for me either, but i haven't figured out y so.What does it say when you type ipconfig /release in the command prompt?

B.It simply brings up the the default IP numbers. It will not zero out or renew.how old is this machine??Is this an add on card that they put in another machine ? ?
Or did they do this in the laptop ? ?

There is a space between the function and command IE: ipconfig /release =ipconfig (space) /release.The machine is an HP Pavilion and is 4 about yrs old with a PIII 1.2Ghz. Best Buy/Geek Squad did it on this machine, with a card that obviously works which came with the laptop. And yes, I know that there is a space in command win it is just that it does nothing to release.y dont you just reformat... have you ever reformatted it? thatll clean up alot of stuff off the hhd. and maybe fix the problem.I was hoping not to have to do that but I believe that I might have to.

Solve : BIOS setting.?

Answer» HI I wish to know whether there is any utilities which can save the present BIOS setting, so I could used it later if needed. I have tried CMOS viewer but could not understand how to use it to save it so I can look to it. If anyone have any IDEAS on how to save it will be much appreciate. I have a printer connected with a USB adapter for the old printer. My OS. is XP Pro. Thanks.Have a look through here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads25.htmlThanks GX1_Man I have downloaded the Bios 1.35.1 and I am having problem running it. In the command prompt when I type BIOS an error saying 'it is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable or batch file.' Can you please show me what are the commands I have to type in. I am not good in using the DOS command. Thanks.I don't use it and would have no use for it. I just provide the LINKS.

From the FAQ file included:

Q: Why can't I use the BIOS program under Win NT?
A: Win NT uses a port permission map which doesn't allow user PROGRAMS to access the necessary ports. A possible WORKAROUND would be a special driver but to install it you must have admin rights. But with admin rights, you might also boot normal dos from disk

Solve : netscape mail problem?

Answer»

Hi Folks......Please help a computer illiterate! I've used Netscape Mail (Netscape 7.1) for years with no problem. (I know, why am I not using Outlook Express??) ANYWAY, when I tried to download my email yesterday, I got an error message "Unable to write mail to mailbox. Make sure the system allows you write privileges and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox." I'm stumped....any thoughts? Thanks! BTW, I did compress the files. If you are receiving this error, then try the following workarounds:

Compact your folders
Even though you have emptied your Trash folder, those deleted files still remain in the folder, on the HD, until the Mail is compacted

If no joy, then with the program closed:
Open Windows Explorer
Navigate to your Mail folder, and delete all files with an MSF extension
Don't delete the files without the MSF extension, as they contain your mail. See: Profiles Folder Location

Still having the problem?

Use your ISP Webmail Interface, delete any spam messages, or those with no message body.
Delete anything that looks suspicious to you.

Next:

Close the application:
Open the profile's Mail Account folder ...\MAIL\pop.ISP.net
Rename the Inbox file with NO MSF extension, to OldInbox, and delete the Inbox.msf file.
When the Mail window is reopened you should see a pristine Inbox folder and a folder named Oldinbox.

If you are unsuccessful with the above workarounds, then create a new Profile, as outlined in this guideline:

Actually, I quite understand why you do not use Outlook Express. HOWEVER, I do wonder why you're not using Thunderbird?

More information needed: Disk space, OS, etc.Is Netscape your ISP or do you just use Netscape mail? Hi Guys....Thanks for your replies. Ref Raptor's and SOYBEAN's questions, I use Netscape mail, but SBC for the ISP. The laptop is a newer Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 75 gig drive, 55gigs available. For Sysfix, I'm working me WAY through your suggestions, but no favorable results yet. This is troubling: One moment the email function works normally. With boot-up the next morning, I have the problem. All other computer functions seem to be O.K. Thanks for your continuing helpsysfix gave you some detailed steps. Have you gone through that?

Have you thought about converting your mail over to SBC? Since they are your ISP, you would have technical support from them. You could use Outlook Express with SBC or download Thunderbird and use it. Quote

Have you tried emptying your inbox by logging into webmail? Perhaps it got full..Well friends...This is getting a little more complicated. I'm no longer able to bring up the Netscape 7.2 browser. I UNINSTALLED 7.2, and also uninstalled McAfee Viruscan. Then, I downloaded and re-installed Netscape 7.2. It appeared to go through the installation process, but won't respond to a click on the browse icon. I uninstalled 7.2 once again, and downloaded and installed 8.0 As 8.0 was installing, I noticed that it was importing bookmarks, cookies, etc from 7.2, but NOT email! Now, with 8.0 fully installed, there doesn't seem to be a way to access email through my ISP. 8.0's only email capability seems to be third party like hotmail, yahoo, etc. Am I overlooking something? Thanks, as always, for your imputs.

Solve : Varying disk space and compression?

Answer»

My PC runs on Win XP, with a P4 2.80GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM, all updated with MS updates with an 80 GB drive partitioned into the C and D drives with 20 and 60 GB storage respectively. After Win XP uses up its space I am left with about 13GB on C drive. Through the couple years I have filled most of the space on C and I am down to...where it gets interesting. Sometimes my computer shows 1.4 GB of space and sometimes as little as 100 MB of space. I RUN NORTON and sometimes it keeps a lot of protected files in the recycle bin, but even after cleaning it out it can vary where LITERALLY where one minute I have over 1 GB of space and next I have 300 MB of space. Any suggestions how to stop this from happening? ALSO, is it OK to compress old file and what does that do to them. Thank you.Microsft recommends 15% free drive space for Windows to function normally. You are significantly lower than that, so I would not be surprised if you are having problems, and you certainly will in the near FUTURE. Time to do some housecleaning.

What you are seeing is probably your swap file trying to cope without crashing the machine. Get ready!

Solve : how to hide....?

Answer»

hello guys,

how do you hide the run command, start => run, and the folder options on tools tab

thanksAre you asking about HIDING the start menu ?

or are you talking about just the "run" command

dl65 OPEN regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer

Create a new DWORD and name it NoRun

SET the value to 1

To "unhide" the run option, set the value back to 0, or SIMPLY delete it.

I'm not sure about the Folder Options question off the top of my head though.

If you are asking how to change your Internet Protocol address, that depends on your Internet Service Provider. this is what I mean how do I delete it....

I actually fell for your link street...hey fat_bastred21 to tell you the truth you actually cant delete it because it is an LAN adapter LIKE a network card that you have in your computer, it is not a connection that you created, so if you want to delete it then disable the correct network adapter from the device manager LIST and that should disappear in the network connections.

Solve : Windows XP SP1?

I am attempting to set up a wireless network for a friend and having a problem installing the network card (Belkin) which works perfectly in my system. His version of XP has not had SP1 INSTALLED. Anybody know if this could be the problem? Do you need SP1 to drive an 802.11g network card?DLoad and install SP2 immediately...it is a major OS upgrade and you probably will find that things will behave better...You need to have SP2 installed for a LOT of reasons. This is just one.And without SP2 you no longer have support from the Mothership...your friend is just asking to be attacked

Solve : win xp upgrade?

Answer»

Please someone help me with this. I have been thinking of reformatting my harddrive, but right now I have to load on the full version of win 95, 98 UPGRADE and win xp upgrade. Can I just by pass all this loading and just load on win xp? The reason why I'm wondering is because it SAYS upgrade on the outside of the cover, and some people say yes and some say no. Will it do a full install or will it look for OLDER versions of xp?You just NEED the CD from a previous qualifying product. It will ask you to insert it early in the install process to verify. You do NOT have to install a previous version, and should not with a full install CD. As these are all upgrade disks themselves however, who knows with Microsoft.

So stick in the XP disc, REBOOT and have that Windows 98 CD handy. You will know the answer before any files are written to the hard drive.

Hello, I have windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 2, Asus P4P800SE MotherBoard, Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU, and 1.00 GB of RAM. Something has happened that causes everything to open very slowly, My Doucuments, My Computer, Cotrol Panel, ect, everything. My Browser (FireFox) and my internet connection work fine like always. So I went to System Restore to try and fix it, but it does not work. I GET,
     Restoration Incomplete
Your computer cannot be restored to:
              date/time
        system checkpoint
No Changes Have Been Made

None of my checkpoints work. I read alot about this and have done everything I read, it is set to automatic and started, the deactivate box is NOT CHECKED.
I finally read that I needed to go to start> run>msconfic>start up
and make sure that the boxes PCHealth and StateMgr where checked. Well what I found is that I have no PCHealth or StateMgr boxes to check. I really really DONT want to reformat my hard drive. Can someone please help me to fix this problem. I am running Webroot spy sweeper and Norton internet secuity, I have updated and run both multiple times and find nothing. Any and all help will be GREATLY apprecated, thak you in advance

Solve : Re-enabling pop-up windows in internet?

Answer»

When I "cleaned" my computer last January, many pop-up windows were blocked. Unfortunately, sometimes I need to get into a certain pop-up window. I was signing up for a dental plan today and could not print my cards or enrollment info as they were a pop-up window. Can anyone help me on how to re-enable pop-up windows. I have Windows 2000. Thank you. What BROWSER are you using?
And what version?Internet explorer 6.0 - sorry, should have noted that in my email. Thanks.

Quote

What browser are you using?
And what version?
Make sure java script is enabled. If you are using Sun Java, make sure it is checked in internet OPTIONS/advanced.Did you install some sort of blocking software? Something from your ISP maybe?Time to switch to Firefox. Switching to Firefox would help
However, if you must use IE, you may want to use IE7 instead of IE 6
As for popups in IE6, there should be a little icon at the bottom on the right side, looks like a little window with a stop sign on it, which indicates if popups are being blocked
There should also be a bar bat the top saying "popup blocked. To SEE this popup or additional options click here..."
Click the bar and select "always allow popups from this site"
Click yes in the dialog box
Now you should get all popups from the site you are on
If you need to remove sites from the allow list, go to Internet Options, then the privacy tab, and popup options are at the bottom of the window
Hope this helpsXP only Calum, musiclover has W2K.Sorry about that, I thought it would work the same with IE6 regardless of operating system
I didn't realise it was different
SorryI used a "registry cleaner" that included stopping pop-ups. I was hoping I could go BACK into it, and do something in reverse - ha, ha!

Solve : Two questions regarding XP?

Answer»

A friend of mine gave me an old P2 400 to mess around with. I am thinking about wiping it and installing Linux.

He had installed XP on it (it ran like crap of course). His kids used it mostly.

1. There are four user accounts set up, but they cannot remember the passwords for any of them. Is there any way that i can get into the machine on ANY of these accounts? I really just want to get on there so i can run some hardware recognition tools before I wipe.

2. Is it technically legal for me to use the XP LICENSE to install on another machine, as long as there is only ONE machine using that license. For some reason, my gut says no, but in my opinion that would be a bunch of crap and I would find it very hard to swallow.

PKDo you have the real XP CD and a COA (the small sticker with the 25 digit code in the format xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx)?

Regarding the plan on what OS to install, what are the other hardware details on the P2 machine - RAM, HD, OPTICAL drives, brand of computer or motherboard, etc.?Yes, I have the COA and CD.

The P2 is a Gateway. That is why I wanted to be able to get into those locked accounts, so I could run some tools to tell me more information. I can probably find out through other methods, but tools such as CPU-Z and SysID make it so much easier.

I know that it is a P2 400, 10 GB Hdrive, 3 RAM slots (PC100 i believe - at least THATS what is installed), AGP port with a 16 mb STB Velocity card (Nvidia TNT??) -- thats about all I know. Looks like a good Linux box to me.

PKElephants. Here is a free trial of Passware Kit and you baicaly create a floppy and restart pc and it will reset teh password for the adimistrator account.. so give it a try here is the link... just download the trial the full version cost big BUX.. so get the free trial it WORKS the same..

http://www.lostpassword.com/windows-xp-2000-nt.htm

It would make a much better anything box than an XP box. What version depends on how much RAM is in there. You should be able to get that information from the BIOS or during boot. Let us know.Mark, you're slipping.

Just boot a Knoppix Live Linux CD - that'll detect most if not all of the hardware.Yeah, I told him not to bother installing XP on it, but he said that it worked good enough for the kids.

I am not sure how much RAM will be left when i get done shuffling things around. I have a bunch of 64 and 128 MB sticks that i want to try to sell and buy some 256's. Depending on how that goes, it will have between 256 and 512.

I never thought about the Live Linux CD. I was actually thinking about Puppy Linux as the flavor though. Will it give me the hardware details that I need? I guess worst case scenario I can just figure it out as I go.

pkIt sounded like you knew the important things already - processor, graphics, hard drive.

That is enough for Vector Linux right there.Any input on question #2?

By the way, this is an OEM copy that he bought on ebay (new of course). Will that make a difference?

I REALLY do not want to have to buy another copy to put on that P3 and its wasted on the P2.

PK
It will probably be OK, but call Microsoft and ask them. 1-800-MICROSOFTSome OEM licences forbid installation on any hardware other than the hardware supplied with the OS. You can comply with this requirement fully by taking the last remaining screw from the old machine, and upgrading it by adding a case, motherboard, power supply, hard drive.......I have used this little trick to wipe out the pass word accounts, near the battery there should be three pins with a blue or brown plastic jumper connected to two of them, I just turned the system off, put the jumper on the empty pin and the center pin, start up the system, shut the system off and return the pin to the original position, that wipes the administrator account clean and you can be the original administrator, the original jumper is usually the center pin and the pin to the right of center. But that is for a hardware (BIOS) password, not a software (Windows) password.I called MS today and explained my situation. I was told that OEM licenses cannot be transferred. Retail yes, OEM no. It is a one machine forever install. I don't think we understood each other at first. I think she thought I meant it was a branded OEM version, but we straightened that out. She basically told me that even if the old system CRASHED and burned, i would still not be able to ever use that license again. My only option regarding the P3 would be to either buy the full retail (not an option) or the updrage since it has Win98 installed and I have a Win98 CD.

She also claimed that the OEM versions are not as complete as the full retail and may be lacking some features???

So basically, if we look at things "legally," i have two new giant paperweights.

This really annoys me.

I guess now my question is....will it WORK with the OEM version that I have? I am not asking if i should or shouldn't....just will it work? It sounds like an unknown, which is my fear.

Solve : Standby resume no longer possible - help!?

Since a while it's no longer possible get my PC out of standby modus.
How did it work in the past?
- click standby
- Screen shuts down
- PC became 'quiet'' ( LED's keep lightning of of course)
- Back ACTIVE again after pushing the ON-button of the machine

What is happening now ? ( wrong)

- click standby
- screen shuts down ( so far so good)
- BUT the PC does not become quiet apparantly.
- Pushing the ON-button has no effect at all.. The screen remains black. :-?

The only option is to plug out the main power.
What Windows....My OS = Windows XP PRO sp2when did this start happening?? what did you do before this started happening?? any new software updates? what protections do you have?- It's hard to TELL EXACTLY when this problem started. I don't use the standby function every day.
Very recently I 've migrated from NIS2006 towards AVG free anti-virus + Zonealarm.
And I've upgraded my ATI Radeon X800 drivers to a new version.
I've replaced a DVD-player ( from ASUS towards a Sony)

- Other installed protection: Windows Defender.

I think that 'system' file is continually CHANGING so I doubt if you can just grab it from your Windows disk.

Here is a very good guide to repair your OS.

TAKE note of the times they say not to use the 'R' key and not to press enter to boot from the cd.
Hint: Take your time going through the initial menu stage of the site. Thanks for the quick reply. I actually found a previous thread that described how to copy the missing file off of the original XP CD. It is working again with apparently no lost data. Concerned as to why it happened in the first PLACE. Five YEARS without a hitch till now.

Solve : Two Windows XP to chose from at startup?

A COUPLE of weeks ago I (thought) I RESTORED Windows XP Home on my Dell laptop. The (supposed) restoration fixed the problems I was having, and of course I had to call Microsoft because I had EXCEEDED my number of installs for the Full version of XP I had installed on the laptop when I had to change hard drives. Now when I startup the laptop, I'ma faced with a screen that asks me to choose between one of two Windows XP operating systems. Whichever one I choose, the result is the same. How can I eliminate this screen?

Thanks,

Solve : How to Delete new.dot.net file in startup menu?

Inspiron 4000, WIN 2000, have a rundll error in start up and need to delete this new.net dot program (spyware remover) in the start up menu (apparently, this is where it is) http://www.newbie.org/firstaid/newdotnet_removal.html

<------------------

This is some worthless software. But I guess you found that out?new.net doesn't remove spyware, it IS spyware. Download and run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy.do you want to uninstall or just stop it from being loaded at startup?

Depending on service pack you can left click start then left click run type in "msconfig" and goto the startup tab and uncheck it from there then restart otherwise to uninstall simply goto control panel and then double left click add/remove programs find the program in question and click on change/removeI want to uninstall this program or either uncheck it so it's not looking for a new.net.dot file...I have a rundll error: I don't have msconfig :-?; not getting modem signal into socket either. You have a lot of problems, still.

Didn't I suggest you format and reinstall about a month AGO?This rundll error problem just began a week ago; I have three computers and on the system I was having problems with a month ago, I did a new install...it now is fine. I cannot get online with the new system to download anything though at this point because of the spyware and didn't have any problems until my internet service provider (adelphia but has just SOLD to comcast..no wonder) suggested I download a spyware removal program to speed up my computer and that was not the problem to begin with..they changed my service. I can only download on this system (win 98) on floppy and download to other system that I'm now having problems with. Thats wierd I thought it did it was SP3 or 4 I thought had it maybe I just added to it to the system way back when I used windows 2k lolI now have deleted new.dot spyware and no longer get an error message when booting up;but still can't get online. Yes, ran winsock program and no problems reported. :-? Solve : windows wouldn't boot - problems with reinstall?

Answer»

i was on the microsoft website downloading some security updates because i had a trojan and spyware and i was TRYING to stop it happening again. anyway my hard disk became full during this so all the updates were failing, so i cancelled the application. my computer was running slow after this so i decided to shut it down and re-start it. when it came to booting windows it showed the windows graphic for a bit but then it went to a blue screen saying that a .dll file had been illegally removed from memory and it would not run. i tried safe mode but it wouldn't work either and it just hung on this screen and went no further. so i put in my windows cd and tried to repair windows, but it said it could not repair windows and this was likely due to an internal error. so i booted from the windows cd again and installed a fresh copy of windows, over the EXISTING windows directory. that worked and my computer is working fine at the moment (that i can tell). the only problem is that windows doesn't recognise all the programs i had installed before. the files are all there, example i can go into c:/documentsandsettings and there is a folder there with my name that contains everything i had on the computer before -programs/images/movies - my entire hard drive.
so i was wondering if i have ruined my computer by doing what i did and if i can get this version of windows to recognise all my existing programs somehow? like to somehow get that folder to input into this new copy of windows or something??
if i need to explain anything else please let me know
oh i have a dell pentium 4 2.0 GHz 512 mb ram, windows xp home edition and before this problem i was running service pack 2 v.2096, atm it is just service pack 1 i think
thank YOUIF you have all of the program CD's it would take just a few minutes more to reinstall them. How many hours did it take to reinstall Windows and update that?

An over the TOP install like that has never been satisfactory for me. If you have any data to backup do so, then format the drive and reinstall Windows.

You have just copied over some previous MAJOR problems. You didnt eliminate them. You also haven't addressed the issue of a full hard drive? What's going to happen when you try to do the updates again? :-?

Alan <>< my hard drive is fine now i have plenty of space.
ok so i reinstalled most of my programs from cds and stuff
the only problem now is i cant get avg antivirus to work. i tried reinstalling it but it encountered an error and it wont execute. now i also cant unistall it.
any suggestions?
Do you remember what the error was, usually it will say an error number or a description as to what the error might be.I imagine it was the Roxio CD burning (included with Windows Media Player) warning that is KNOWN to pop up.

If you click OK then it will install and function properly.

Yes, I tried both. But there may be new bugs that will always remain unpatched due to it no longer being supported. If you do not have a hardware firewall, you are better off getting an up-to-date firewall if you ask me.

ZoneAlarm doesn't play nice with Windows 98 anymore, I noticed. It used to until 2 or 3 versions ago. Quote

Like I said, there might be bugs that will forever be unpatched due to it no longer being supported.

The same would apply to Windows XP and Windows 2000.There are no bugs in Version 5.5 Build 2710. How does a software firewall create CORRUPT DLoads anyway ? ? ?I Googled his firewall & it seems other people were having corruption problems too, go FIGURE, it's a hardware firewall.
It's too early in the morning to think about it but I'd like to see your question answered Patio. Quote

How do you know? Did you DEBUG it?

It's the same as saying Windows 98 is bug-free now that it is unsupported.

Solve : Application Uninstaller?

Answer»

Can ANYONE recommend an application uninstaller for pesty apps. that won't uninstall thru A/R Programs? I checked the FAQ most used and didn't find anything. It may be there but THAT'S what I get for having to wear tri-focals :-/

Alan <><

BTW - FREE is very cool What kind of applications are we speaking of?

Patio once recommended total uninstaller, which is VERY nice. But only works if you install the applications with that program.

Did you try running the kill with killbox?"What kind of applications are we speaking of?" Nothing in particular. I run into situations that sometime the A/R programs won't completely uninstall an app. Instead of having to go edit the Registry and poke around Explorer I'd like something that will just remove everything.

"Patio once recommended total uninstaller, which is VERY nice. But only works if you install the applications with that program." I Googled total uninstaller and like you said, you have to install the app with that program. I'm looking for something after-the-fact.

"Did you try running the kill with killbox?" Doesn't killbox just kill the running application, & not remove it completely? I did download it and PUT it on one of my test pc's but haven't had a chance to run it.

Alan <>< Tried CrapCleaner?

Got it but haven't tried that feature. I carry it around on my flashdrive to install on new clients computers so as to keep them tuned up. I'll give that a whirl next time.

Thanks

Alan <>< Are you going to download everything and not try it, Ale? I download a lot of stuff and unfortunately, don't get to all of the features sometimes. After all, there are so many hours in the day...PLUS, the wife needs some time too

Alan <>< After the fact is unfortunately too late... Give Total Uninstall a once around the block, you won't be disappointed.not really what your looking for but it comes in handy a great deal http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 I use it to help keep my computer CLEAN Quote

not really what your looking for but it comes in handy a great deal http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 I use it to help keep my computer clean

I wonder why it says "Microsoft Office update"..

By the way, this looks rather WORTHLESS. Unless the Windows installer can detect an installer (Which will allready be removed as stated by OP) it can't do anything for you. Yet another redundant Microsoft tool that didn't make it into the OS because .. Well, it's redundant!

Solve : Bootloader woes.?

Answer»

I had 2 partitions - one full of corrupted data, and one normal WORKING Windows XP SP1 one.
However, boot.ini was written to the corrupted one, labeled C:, when I installed Windows on the working one, D:.
I decided I had gotten enough data off of C:, so I was GOING to delete it and make D: bigger. I didn't merge them, as this would include all of the corrupted data, and would probably cause other problems.
However, at the time, I didn't know Windows had written boot.ini and ntldr on C:, so I just deleted it without getting those files.
Now, the bootloader is messed up.
I tried fixmbr, fixboot, and bootcfg on the Windows install disk recovery console, but none of them worked.
D: does not have boot.ini or any other files needed for booting on it.I have recieved boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect from a friend that ripped it off a windows CD.
I was planning to put those on my hard DRIVE, and then run various commands on the Windows install CD to make them compatible with my specific disk configuration.
However, I've had problems getting them onto my hard drive.
I'm using various linux liveCDs to try and copy the files from a USB drive or a CD, but every distro has trouble with making my devices able to be written to and read from.
On DamnSmallLinux, it tells me that anything I try and use is read-only, so I can't even copy from it.
In a distro called Slax, it will let me copy the files off of the USB drive or CD, but it says my hard drive is read-only.
When I try and change the permissions, the process stalls.

Suggestions on how to fix this read-only problem, or how to fix my bootloader in another way would be very welcome.I hope you do realize that once the data is saved that both drives should be FORMATTED and Windows reinstalled on C.

Tell me again specifically what happens with a SLAX attempt - all error messages, did you password protgect any files, etc.Yes, I realize that once my files were saved I should have reformatted and reinstalled, but I didn't.

On the slax attempt, my hard drive is just considered read-only.
When I try to make it not read-only, the window that pops up and shows the status of the process stays at 0% and says "Stalled" below the bar.
I did not password protect any files, C is just considered read-only.What about a repair install of XP, and then applying SP2?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

You may also have to take ownership of those folders.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Is this a real XP installation? 95% of the SP1 only installs I have seen were bootlegged copies. Microsoft also no longer supports Windows with less than SP2. Maybe they booby trapped you?

Keep in mind that you may have defective hardware as well. I would check that HD pronto with free diagnostics from the drive maker's site. It is a real XP installation, but one problem may be that I haven't activated it yet.
It's been around 15 days, but whenever I tried to activate it, the window that gives you the options on activation froze.

I'll try a repair install, and hopefully it will work.Keep us posted. Hmm...
Strange.
There is no repair option on the install disk when I go into setup, agree with the licence, and make the partition I want to repair selected.Repair install of XP

patio. 8-)Thanks a whole lot, patio!
I'm going to try and copy the files from the CD like it said in that webpage. :-? :-? :-? :-?Thanks to you too, GX1.

But I'm having a bit of a problem still.
I have copied the files from the CD to C:, but boot.ini still is not working.
When I try and add my Windows installation to the loader via recovery mode>bootcfg /rebuild , it says it is unable to add the boot entry.
I tried editing it manually to tell it that my Windows installation is on the 2nd partition of my hard drive via MIDNIGHT Commander on the Slax liveCD, but it won't let me save.
And unfortunately, the XP install CD doesn't have a text editor. My :-? was about the notion of copying files from the CD to the hard drive.Oh.
Well, after one of the warnings in that link, it showed a method of copying the neccessary files from the CD to your hard drive through the recovery console..

Solve : desktop icons not working. Please help?

Answer»

Whenever I click on my desktop icons, they all dissapear along with the windows taskbar and the program dosent run, however all the programs I already have running stay open. Usually they reappear after a few seconds but sometimes they dont come back. If I run the explorer prgram through the task manager they come back but the problem persists. This dosent happen for all the icons just most of them. Firefox WORKS along with a few anti-virus/spyware programs i recently downloaded. More recently my task manager has become messed up. The blue bar and the tabs at the top have dissapeared so I can only veiw applications I have running. Also Ive randomly lost all my FAVORITES, search engines, bookmarks ect. on firefox.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Computer specs(sorry I dont know to many specifics, Im not sure how to look at them since I cant get into control pannel):
Dell Dimension E510
Windows XP Media Center
Intell Pentium 4
512 MB RAM
160 GB harddrive
I have Trend Micro Pccillin but its been out of date for a while
Ive downloaded the free anti virus/anti spyware programs reccomended on this site and am in the process of running themWithout an up to date antivirus and spyware protection being used regularly you are an accident waiting to happen. WHen you are clean of EVERYTHING (and you list the programs you used) then all bets are off and we can't proceed. Ok Ive gotten Spybot, Windows Defender, and AVG free edition. AVG is still running and has already found about 100 infected objects. There are multiple "Klone" viruses and "Generic" trojin horses. Im not sure if that helps, is there anyway to POST the results of the scan when its finished?ok did a search on the klone virus, and there are others that report getting winantivirus popups which I get all the time. I thought I stoped these with spybot and Windows defender but I keep getting them. Dont know if this relates to my other problems though.Scan in safe mode.ok results in a whileSorry for the long delay. I scaned again with AVG and the 190 or so infected objects is down to four, all Klone virus. I got rid of these so is my computer clean now?
Also while in safe mode my desktop kept dissapearing, this time after just a few seconds. I kept getting a message that asked me if I would LIKE to work in safe mode. If I clicked yes my desktop would come back for a few seconds and the message would appear again. Is this normal? With such a compromised machine I would format and reinstall to remove ALL infections, but that;s just me. Some people like to patch together a (mostly) workable solution.Being a thrillseeker I decided to Google winantivirus to see if anythinh had changed. (Nothing has)
I clicked on a Google link to the winantivirus homepage and would you believe Google intercepted the winantivirus homepage, put up a warning and gave me an opportunity to chicken out.
How cool is that? Check it out.
http://www.google.com/interstitial?url=http://www.winantivirus.com/
I'm off to winantivirus now to test my bulletproof IE *gulp* if I don't come back here's a link for you.

Solve : "server busy" error each time nero is launched?

Answer»

Recently I've been getting the following error each time i launch Nero

"This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'Switch To' to activate the busy program and correct the problem"

any ideas what can be causing it and a possible solution??It might take some more info to elucidate a solution.

See below.Windows XP Pro
service pack 2Well that's certainly not alot of additional info there...possibly Nero is PHONING home to check on updates ? ?

patio. 8-)Problem fixed. Seems when i installed Nero 7 it didn't fully erase the previous VERSION (Nero 6) and the two were conflicting SOMEHOW...downloaded a "clean install" tool from Nero for version 6 ran it which deleted all entries for that version, then did the same with the"clean install" tool for version 7........finally, re-installed Nero 7, and it's been working great since. You must ALWAYS remove a previous version when installing the new version of Nero. It's a good idea with most other programs as well, but with Nero 7 it is not an option.

That also illustrates why pertinent history of the problem can be ESSENTIAL to a solution. Sometimes posters overlook this, and we SPEND literally weeks sorting it all out.

Solve : Desktop Icons Backgrounds Blue!?

Answer»

I've searched high and low on the internet and on here (hopefully I'm not repeating unknowingly) and I can't find an answer to my problem that works. The backgrounds for the icons on my desktop are blue. I've manually gone into settings and set it to be transparent, and it still never happens. There's a basic picture attached. WELL it looks like that minus the icons I coloured over in paint.

My computer is running on Windows XP Pro Service pack 2. I dont' know what other information would be pertinent...

Any help would be great thanks.

Right CLICK on My Computer and choose properties
Go to the Advanced tab
Choose settings, under performance
Place a check in the second to last box in the visual effects tab (show drop shadows for icon LABELS on desktop)
Press OK on all the dialog boxes
Your icon backgrounds should now be transparentYes I had this happen b4 and did a clean install to fix it then I figured out what I did... just like Calum said EXCEPT I set mine to best performance so it automatically unchecked EVERTHING... its hard to imagine someone would be as irritated as me about such a little thing...LOL

Solve : Uninstalling software from secondary hard drive??

Answer»

Is there an easy way to do this from my main drive?

To explain my issue better, I mean that I have two hard drives. The one that I now use as a secondary one and primarily for storage of media, I used to use as my primary, and have Windows and lots of other software installed. I then got a new hard drive and made the other as secondary, but never formatted it or uninstalled anything (the circumstances at the time didn't allow me to) so it's basically in the same state as it was from when I used to use it regularly. What I mean to do is just clear out a little junk since I'm not using any of those programs.

Would I have to temporarily make it my primary and then MANUALLY go through and uninstall EVERYTHING? I hope not :|

I'd also like to say that if there's a way around this without formatting it (which I'm actually not totally sure how to do) just because I don't have any place to keep the important files I want to save until it's all done.

Hopefully this makes sense enough, thanks. Not nearly clear enough...are you saying you have an OS installed on each HDD?

If so this complicates what you are trying to do...YES I do have an OS on both hard drives >_>

Windows XP Pro with SP2 on both.

In what way does this complicate things?Which drive has your active version of Windows? Do you have the option to boot into the old one when the computer starts?

If it is ABSOLUTELY not active, you can just delete the Windows and Program Files folders and get that space back until you are ready for a more permanent solution.Well my primary has the active version of Windows. It's the one I use. The other one has Windows but I never boot into it and have no reason to. I also don't have the option to unless I take out my main hard drive; it doesn't GIVE me an option to boot into it on start-up.

So I can just delete those folders then, yes? I would really like to format it eventually, but I'll need an external hard drive or something to temporarily put all the stuff on.Why not grab a DVD burner instead ? ? ?I do have a DVD burner, but I have almost 100 gigs of info I want to keep, and I'm not willing to use up 20-something DVDs for that :[If that hard drive craters tomorrow, that data will be gone forever. You don't sound like you have anything worth investing in, so maybe it's not important. All hard drives die eventually, and that's a fact.If using dual-layer media the storage capacity goes up to almost 9G per DVD...

A good point indeed. Everything I have on the hard drive is stuff I could get again, it would just take a *censored* of a lot of time and patience, so you're right, it's not worth investing in. I am going to go through it all though and clean up some stuff I know I won't want in the future. I'm kind of a computer pack rat and rarely delete anything, but I guess this is a good enough time to get over that :]

Quote
If using dual-layer media the storage capacity goes up to almost 9G per DVD...

Could you expand on that please?Dual-layer burners with the correct media expand the storage area per disk from 4.2G to 8.4....I believe a dual-layer disk is much more costly. Even more than 2 single layered ones. Not any longer.

Shame on you, you know about NOD32 and Norton but yet you have neglected to use them?

The online scanners are fine, they are fully up to date and only require a click or two by the user.
The alternative is to get the user to download, install, update, configure and finally run scanning programs, this can be too much for some users.
The downside of using the Panda Online scan is that it won't eliminate some things for you but it will tell you of their presence.... it is free after all.

Edit Of course it's expected you have realtime protection installed & updated. Quote
