sorry guys, i didnt catch the HOW i reinstalled ME.

how i reinstalled:

 • popped the CD in and booted from it.
 • went through scandisk.
 • went through the setup wizard.
 • booted from the HD and it went to the desktop and operated normally... excapt the internet thing.

anything else you need?Did you run the "Internet Connection Wizard" assuming ME has one.
Start>PROGRAMS>Accessories>Communications...Did you reformat or overwrite?Yep, that is definitely PART of the HOW.

Program Files/Internet Explorer/Connection Wizard/inetwiz.exe is what you need. Go to the Run menu and browse for this file.

"boot failure reboot and SELECT proper boot devise or install boot media in selected boot device press any key when ready"preeceding that it says that cdrom couldn't be found but in my comp. it shows up and device manager it shows all the rom drives I know that the xp cd is bootable because it will work in other comp. and the cdrom's work on the comp. that I'm trying to do a install on for some reason they arn't reconized for bootup any ideas as why?
thanks
1mgoThe electronics of a CDROM usually go long before the mechanical parts. The tray will still open and close, the light comes on, etc. but it will never work. Given the age of your processor and system, if this is the original drive it probably is time to put in a new one. They are really inexpensive - a DVD BURNER (which would be overkill, but usable as a CD/CDRW/DVD player is only $32 delivered!

You can try the drive in another machine to test it, but I believe it has given up the ghost. You can press the pause button to pause the boot sequence. If you want to pause/unpause, rapidly press a random button and the pause button.. With a little experimenting, you'll get it right. Works on any PC I've worked on, but may only be usable on a PS/2 keyboard..

Solve : Microsoft Outlook 2002 and Outlook Express 6?

Miscrosoft Windows XP

I would like to MAKE Microsoft Outlook 2002 my default mail handler but all my incoming mails find their WAY into Outlook Express 6. I have already designated Microsoft Outlook 2002 as my default program (Tools-Options-Others-General-Checked the box for "Make Outlook the default program for email").  What else should I do?
Where is that?  Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, and set Outlook as the E-mail program.
Problem not solved yet.
Thanks, soybean. I did just that - "Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, and set Outlook as the E-mail program."  Then I sent test mails to myself from my Microsoft Outlook but all my incoming mails went straight to Outlook Express. .  What do you think is wrong here?

By the way, I also tried deleting my email accounts from Outlook Express, with the hope that all incoming mails will be "forced" to go to Microsoft Outlook, but no luck.  - this time i sent test mails to me from Microsoft Outlook, and still, no incoming mails went into Microsoft outlook.   Guys, I still need help.
Review your email account settings in Outlook, particularly the Incoming Mail Server INFO.  And, USE the Test Account Settings button in the email account settings panel to test your email account setup.  If it doesn't pass the test, then you need to change something.THANKS SOYBEAN!
I changed both the incoming and outgoing server names because of the network router I use.  I then re-tested the settings, they came out OK.

Solve : Boot up in safe mode?

Answer»

Why is that, when reboot in safe mode always seem to take longer then in normal mode? I thought it would be faster since there are fewer THINGS for the OS to load.

BMy guess is that it's just another laziness on M$s part. After all, why would someone have to restart when all that is needed is for the explorer to be refreshed. Restart takes 5minutes refresh takes 2 seconds. It could be louisy SCRIPTS but i'm not totally SURE. If anyone has an answer it will probably be better than mine.I mentioned this (W2K) a few weeks ago and Raptor said my computer was faulty.
I didn't believe one word of it.
I think it's just a windows thing. If safe mode doesn't load something's wrong, but safe mode has always loaded pretty fast on the machines I've WORKED on. And if it didn't, it usually wouldn't load at all.. Quote

Solve : Unable to load my computer after password?

Answer»

Not sure what happened but my computer was always getting shut down due to not having enough memory when I was accessing myspace accounts. I was always able to restart and surf the web, but unable to access certain myspace accounts. Well I was turning on my computer and put in my password and the windows thing came up SAYING everything was loading, my personal settings was being loaded, but then nothing was loaded. My tool bar at the bottom of the screen is not visible the icons for my computer, internet, recycle bin..., was not visible. My mouse arrow is visible but nothing else is. Does anyone KNOW what the problem is and how can it be fixed. I have no idea whats wrong. :-?How about some details on the machine and any spyware virus protection being used?

I assume it used to work so what has changed? Can you boot in safemode and do a system restore?

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/howto/lauchsystemrestore.htmThe computer is a Toshiba lap top. Not sure on the spy ware. I have the standard virus scan that comes with windows. But I am unable to access anything with my computer. When I do reboot in safe mode all it says is safe mode at the corners of the screen and that is all. I can see the mouse arrow move around but nothing else. This problem started after being at some my space accounts that require more memory and my computer would shut down immediately saying not enough memory to support page. Then the computer would reboot. But now nothing comes up on the screen after rebooting. Quote

Solve : Complex sound problem, software related...?

Answer»

Hi guys, okay I have a Windows XP Pentium D w/ a 3.0 GHZ processor, 2 gigs of ram, GeForce 7800 TI, Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS..

Anyway, I've had an issue with my sound recently not working. I called Dell Technical Support for a DIFFERENT (resolved) issue, and during the process of trying to fix it they had me do an XP SYSTEM Restore to a point about 2 WEEKS before the date I did it. When my computer rebooted after the restore, my sound wasn't working. I looked in my Device Manager, and it showed 2 Unknown devices that didn't have drivers installed under my "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers."

I told Windows to reinstall the drivers for these devices, and found out what they are... one is called "Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter." and the other is called "Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer." when I try to install these drivers, either by letting it automatically find a driver for them or by SEARCHING the Windows CD, it finds a driver and starts to install it, but then it gives me an error message saying "Driver is not intended for this platform."

I don't know what these files are or what they do, but I do know that since they haven't been working, if I go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in my control panel, I find that the system isn't recognizing my SB Audigy 2 ZS as a playback device. It says "No Audio Device" under the "volume" tab and under the "Audio" tab and under "sound playback" it says for "Default Device: No Playback Devices." It does recognize my card for RECORDING and MIDI playback for some reason though.

I've tried reinstalling the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS drivers, that didn't fix the problem and the Device Manager shows the drivers are working fine and are recognized. I also tried removing the Microsoft Kernel devices, and upon reboot the System finds new hardware but still can't install those drivers for them.

Anyway, I'm at a loss for what to do, any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Dell said that I should just reinstall Windows, but that would delete all of my many gigs of music, moves, and games, and it'd be a REAL hassle to back all of those files up. Anything less drastic would be strongly preferable. Thanks a lot for any help on this.  Instead of reinstalling Windows, try performing a repair installation.Cool, I'll try that... can you point me in the direction of an article on how to do that? I'd appreciate it, just to make sure that I'm doing the right thing, found several things talking about Repairs to Windows...http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=repair+install+xp

Solve : how do i setup w2k datacenter server for FTP??

Answer»

ok, i know little about FTP servers, but i would like to setup my rig as an FTP server... i want to set it up as an FTP server so i can download or upload files when i am away from home. incase you need my system specs, they can be found in the document below. i need to know how i can set this thing up as a simple FTP file server. so i can upload or download documents, images, music files, ect, while i am at school, work, or where ever i may need a file. since the my documents of my school laptop synchronizes to a server, files sometimes go missing, so, i will back them up on here.

i am going to upgrade to 512mbs of ram, and put a linksys 10\100 eitherfast card in here, i seem to have them laying around everywhere, and i cant get the onboard lan to work. i will pull out the d-link WIRELESS adapter when i get a LAN line ran to my room, which will be some time after the 20th, which is when i get paid. i am also going to modify two 120mm fans to the front of the case, the case is a gateway 2000 P5-133, i removed the plate that covered the fan vents, with alittle sawing of plastic, and some drilling, it will fit nicely. i am also putting in a hard drive cooler that takes up 3 5.25 bays, and has a 120mm fan to cool the hard drives, although i will have to swap the fan, i dont want one with blue LED's in my server, which may have to run at times while i am sleeping, it will be setup at the foot of my bed, so, a bright blue light isnt a good idea. i can stand the noise though. i will take pics when its all done. which, will be some time after the 30th hopefully. i am going to get 2 IDE RAID cards, so i can run my 27 gig, 74 gig, two 8 gigs, and 40 gig at the same time. i am also buying a 320 gig drive, so i will never run out of serving space. other than that, i wont be upgrading it much more. will have to find a better used monitor than the danged packard bell i will have to use, that thing is beyond outdatted and useless, its from 1996, same year as the computer case. oh, i am also upgrading to a 420w psu from the 380, need more connectors. i will swap out the CD rom for my dvd burner, i dont need it now, seeing as my other computer is dead.Acquire an FTP server, punch a hole in your firewall and watch the leeches come out to play... no way to secure it? or stealth it?

EDIT: i am going to install the normal server dition, datacenter has too many unneeded features that eat up WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much of my ram (90% of 256mbs)You have a couple of options.  First choose your FTP program, if you don't want to spend anything use the FTP program that comes with Windows as PART of IIS.  If you don't mind spending a little money I've used Serv-u for years and it works quite well, I think they may even have a free personal edition.

If this FTP is only for your use then I would recommend changing the port to something other than 21, it will only be impacted by you entering the FTP address and having to remember to change the port.

Disable any anonymous access to the site, regardless of the software you use.

The last thing to consider is your IP address, if it's static then you have no problem for getting to your site.  If it's dynamic as a lot of ISP's are then your address is going to change all the time.  You can subscribe to a free service that will require you to install a little app on your server running the FTP that will always report your IP address to their servers and you will access your site via a URL they provide.  Not sure if these will allow FTP usage but at the very least it will report your IP address to you.

Those are pretty much the basics.Nice Reply kilowatt, and Welcome Aboard...

thanks, i can go into my modem and set this computer to static, the rest to dynamic (i think). i will look into the program this weekend.

if i do invest in a server program it will not be until i have this sever upgraded, i am going to put a full ATX motherboard in here, to replace the micro, and put in 512mb pc133 stick with my two 128's, will be 768mbs of ram then, more than enough for this thing to serve data. i will also have two of these ata133 raid cards:

[link]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16816102007[/link]

i am also upgrading the power supply so i will have enough connectors. i do not feel like running a ton of connectors and spitters on the 300w psu is running, knowing my luck it would blow up and take everything with it. i will probably upgrade to a 420w or better, running 6 drives, CD burner, AGP card, RAID cards, and a NIC card will take quite a bit of power, not to mention fans, i plan to modify two 120mms to fit in the front.

Solve : Copying pictures/videos/music Windows XP?

Answer»

I'm looking for a way to quickly copy all the music, video and picture files (There's a lot of 'm) from one HDD to another.

The Windows search function doesn't cut it, some files give me strange errors that they cant'be found and it immediatly neglects to copy the rest which is terribly annoying because I can't be bothered to search for the faulty files among the NEARLY 16000 counting items.

Any ideas? I don't seem to have a problem accessing My Documents so I assume it's not an ownership problem.

Sync Back

Free version at the bottom of the page...

Hope this helps.

Please don't tease the animals....

Someone must have hijacked my account!

No, it worked like a charm.

I tried wildcards, but it would constantly give me 'Can't access .... file' which generally pissed me off, because I was too LAZY to boot into safe mode and change the ownership (Even THOUGH that didn't seem a problem all of the time) this program did it all for me. Thanks Patio.  You're more than Welcome...

Solve : Ubuntu, Win2000 and Win XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a 80G HD, it was partitioned into 3 PARTS, 1st partition, primary, 60G for Win2000 pro, 2nd partition, logical, 10G for WinXP pro and 3rd partion, logical, 10G for Ubuntu 6.06. Before I install Ubuntu, both my Win OSs are working fine. After I INSTALLED Ubuntu on the third partition, I try to boot up in Win2000, the chkdsk screen comes up and did a scan, then it boot up nicely and the next time I boot up in Win2000 again everything is normal. However, I am not able to boot up in Win XP. The Win Xp keeps tellng me that the file hal.dll is missing or corrupted and ask me to install a new copy of the file. I did that but it didn't help.

Both Ubuntu and Win2000 are fine, but I really like to have all 3 OSs working, what can I do?

B.Does Ubuntu work correctly? Did you have any problems during the install? Did you burn the CD at a nice slow speed? Details please.Thakns GX1,

Oh yea, Ubuntu and Win 2K are working correctly. It's WinXP that's giving me problem. After I reinstalled Win XP on the same partition, Ubuntu doesn't even show up.

Before I re-install Win XP, the screen take me to this page, I think it's called GRUB in Linux, it give me the choice to either go to Ubuntu or Windows NT/2000/XP, from there I can choose Windows, then it takes me to the choise of Win2000 or WinXP. When I choose Win2000, it starts up very nicely and runs correctly, but if I choose WinXP, that's where I run into this error message saying hal.dll is missing or corrupted.

I suspect it's something to do with the Linux GRUB and/or the Windows MBR are not working correctly.

B.O FORGOT to mention, I burnt the CD at the speed of 1X.When you reinstalled XP you wrote over the Linux boot loader.

This can work by installing the oldest version of Windows first, up to the newest, then loading Linux last and using it's boot loader to manage the whole thing. Thanks GX_1, I figure it was something like that.

I GOT it to work! 3 OSes on one machine.

Here is what I did:

I reinstalled Win2k, I partitioned the HD, 60G for Win2K, 10G for WinXP and 10G for Ubuntu.
Reinstalled WinXP on its own 10 G space.
Reinstalled Ubuntu using the live CD. Use the partitioner to partition the 10G Ubuntu disk space again, 8G for Ext3 and 3G for linux swap,
then install Ubuntu.

Restarted and tested all OSes several times, they all work perfectly.

OK, time for quad boot!

B.Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back.

That is Windows managing the power schemes for ya. Not all versions of Windows have that and some laptop manufacturers use their own software. (Which often seems to work a lot better)Ah, well I always seem to learn something new around here.... 8-)

Solve : Is there a SP3 out there for Windows XP??

Answer» Hi Guys.. Sorry to trouble you. but i heard that there is SP3 available for windows XP, so what does it do is this some sord of JOKE or something? or is it real..Don't think so - yet...

See here..

SP3 for Office is of course readily available...

SP's are a COMING together of all updates to the date the SP is issued.  SP2 is a collection of all updates (including SP1) to the date on which SP2 was issued.

There is no SP3 for WinXP...if there was then windows auto updates WOULD have prompted you to install itWhat are you all talking about? I've got it for nearly a DAY now;

Solve : Force driver to load at startup??

Answer»

Soyo k7vme motherboard, AMD Athlon 2100+ processor, 768MB ram, XP home.  Hello again.  My computer is not loading the NIC driver at startup, only on restart.  When I start up...no network adapter icons, no network adapter in device manager, no connection to the internet.  When I restart it's all good.  Every time.  I've tried bios update, network adapter update, bootvis, virus scans...the WORKS.  Nothing is helping so far.  I got a bootlog of both the startup (no network adapter) and the restart (with network adapter) and did a line by line COMPARISON of the two.  The only difference is that on the restart a driver was LOADED that was not loaded on the initial startup.  fetnd5bv.sys.  Googled it and found that it is indeed a network driver, but even with the latest (I've tried previous also) version it still will not load on the first startup.  Is there some way I can force this driver to load every time?  Modify system.ini or boot.ini?  I've been dealing with this for some time now and it's STARTING to drive me nuts.  All help is appreciated!

Solve : Creating bootable floppy for formatting.?

Answer»

Hello, Ive been searching online for awhile for a way to create a BOOTABLE floppy. I have an old computer with win98 on it and I want to create the floppy for a quick and easy way to automatically formatting my drives. Imessed around with creating a BATCH file and all I put in it was

echo off
format c:

I have two questions really I GUESS, the first is whether or not that batch will WORK, and two if it will work how do I get it to load automatically when I start the computer with the floppy in it.Travel to bootdisk.com and grab the Win98SE custom boot disk...extract it to a clean floppy and you should be good to go.

patio.  8-)Will that only wipe the disk or wipe it and begin the installation of win98. I only want it to wipe it totally, without installing it again. It will only wipe it.
Boot with the floppy in after you have created it...

Solve : Removal of Wireless Network Connection bubble noti?

Answer»

Good Day:
Have not used the Forums for ages but the addition of a  Toshiba Norebook [my wife's] has BROUGHT up questions. I will deal with only ONE,here.
Her Notebook is on WindowsXP. It is Wireless, using a Router which is wired in to our  Desktop computer which uses cable power source..  My question:-
One bubble in the systray pops up "LAN Area connection. A Network cable is unplugged."  As this icon seems to refer to the fact that there is no wired connection to the ISP, can this icon be safely disabled?
   .                                EdmundoR
is this "bubble" on the desktop or laptop?

and correct me if im wrong, but you have a cable modem connected to a router built into your computer? is this an actual router or just simply a second NIC card?

Quote

which uses cable power source..
that kind of confused me.Yes that can be safely disabled. Double click on the icon; choose properties and then untag the last option.Alternatively you can also disable the Windows balloon tips all together by creating a file on your desktop CALL temp.reg and then editing it and pasting in the following:

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"EnableBalloonTips"=dword:00000000
Save it, run it, and then delete the temp reg file you created.  This should disable the annoying popups for that message and others like it.Att: Raptor, kilowat15 and Adviser

Thanks Raptor. I disabled the bubble/balloon. Because I was new to the laptop, I hesitate to click anything suspicious!
Kilowatt, Windows tips are sometimes useful but thanks for telling me how to disable them.
                                           EdmundoRRe. the "Bubble/balloon problem.

Att:  kilowatt15,  Raptor et al:

Raptor, Have to report that the yellow balloons did not disappear after all!
kilowatt15,  I was about to attempt your solution when, disguated at the absense of sufficient info and help in the Toshiba manual, I tried the "Dummies" book on Laptops and hit a bulls eye! It covered my exact problem. And cured it. It, also required editing the Registry. Probably your suggestion would have also done the TRICK, I dont know.
I am relating all this for information to the kind helpers and hope that it may help others with the same prob.
                                                EdmundoR
You may need to untag both options or disable the network card ENTIRELY - I suggest that you undo the registry tweak and do as I say instead otherwise you might, over time, forget you ever made this tweak and wonder why a function of Windows that could be in important in trouble shooting doesn't work..

Att;  Raptor

Thanks!  It sounds like a good alternative. I'm learning all the time!

Solve : Registry Key Info needed?

Answer»

Let me first start off by Introducing myself. My name is Don and I'm a technician at an Internet CAFE with a decent amount of Networking and Computer skills, I still however, have a lot to learn. This cafe runs Windows XP and with various SPECS.

The problem is one of my co-workers used Internet Cafe Software to remove the Hard Disk DRIVES and Network drives Sections from My Computer 's view and with that it makes it inconvenient to browse to; the only way to access the C: is to type it in the address bar. An example is if you're installing software and you want to tell it to install to a particular area, you can't go through My computer as it shows only the Shared documents folder.

I've isolated it down to the Internet Cafe's software interacting directly with the registry instead of using the Permissions section(Group Policy Objects). I would greatly appreciate it if someone COULD point me in the right direction as to the toggle location and the value needed(if Hexidecimal). Or,  some kind of referance that would show me what key is attached to what action. Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Dontry system restore to early date then lock modifactions to register

That should fix it.

Then if you want you can toggle on/off the icons showing in My Computer
and taking snapshots of the Registry ( using InCtrl or RegSnap  or RegShot
and such tools ) before and after the cure
you can compare and focus on which keys are being edited.

well a pc is a pc is a pc,
but kevvy's question is not a pointless one imho.

For instance, as I'm neither from the UK nor from the USA myself,
I've found keyboard layout problems sometimes
with programs written for foreign keyboards.

Try using a dos emulator like dosbox on my pc : I had to fetch
keyb.exe + keyb.sys after growing tired of guessing where the
slashes and commas and such had relocated each time  :-/

I understand this an extreme and unfrequent case, and
hardly relevant to kevvy's purpose, but
it's true nontheless
no question is very pointless if the person asks the question doesnt know the answerA US VERSION of Excel uses the $ as the default symbol for the Currency STYLE formatting button, even though it will actually apply the £ or EURO dollar symbol, whichever is the default currency for your installation of Windows.  But, you may be able to change that default image for the Currency Style formatting button to your specific currency symbol.

Solve : Second install?

Answer»

Hi all'
I have a second 250 gig HDD and I was wondering could I install Windows Xp Pro and My important programmes on this drive ?
The reason is then I could carry on using my normal C drive installion but if anything went wrong, or if I got a virus or something then I could ( hopefully ) use this second installation while I re-formatted my HDD and installed everything again. In other words can I have 2 Win XP Pro installations on the same PC but on different drives. And if I can do this, do I need any SPECIAL software. :-?
Yes you could, but I doubt it'd be a good idea in case of a virus attack.. You should just create two partitions. Install Windows XP On C:\ and use the rest of the disk space to store important information. In case of an attack, wipe C, reinstall and scan the other partitions for viruses before opening programs there. In that case, I also have an EXTERNAL 40 G Hard Drive on my USB2 port. Would it be better to install the second inslilation there ?
That would be safe from virus attack etc wouldent it ? because I can leave it disconnected and only use it when needed.
But is it possable to install Windows on any other drive apart from c :
Does the setup ask you which drive you want to put XP on ?
Looking forward to your answer You're better off creating an Image using software such as Norton Ghost or not getting infected at all by paying for proper Internet Security technology.

A dual-boot is never a good way to make certain you can't be infected, because the other OS might become infected as well unless you use Linux...

You can't reformat C:\ and expect the other Windows OS to still work, Windows relies on the Windows installation of C:\ to work.I agree with Raptor.  Get some imaging software (I use Acronis TRUE Image) then image the primary hard drive to your second hard drive.  It will be a lot easier to recover that way then to have to reinstall EVERYTHING and copy all that data back.

Alan <><  With imaging software (I use Acronis) there is no need to use another HDD...restoring a drive takes about 10 minutes tops...use that space for something else.

I back up once a week and burn a current one monthly to DVD. Worst case scenario i am 3 weeks from back to perfect all within as i said minutes.

Cheers!I have no idea.  I've never created a form in Outlook, and I'd guess many of the other forum regulars have not either.  Nevertheless, learning something new is always interesting and some of US might be willing to look into this if you can provide a lot more info.

What type of form are you trying to create?  Exactly, what is the menu sequence for getting to the screen where you would attempt to insert an image?  Are you modifying an existing form or creating a whole new form?

Solve : Message "Out of range"?

Answer»

I have a gome called "Hunting Unlimited" by "TEEN ESRB".  It is a hunting game.  When I TRY to run the game on full screen, the screen goes black and I get the message "Out of range" and "Vert freq = xxx KHz" and Hor freg = xxKHz".  (These frequencies are different each time i try to run the game)..
My OS is XP, I have 1 Gbyte ram, lots of hard drive, and a 2+ Ghz CPU (Athlon).  I am using a 19" FLAT panel (LCD) by ViewSonic.  I have the display set at 1280x1024 and the  refresh rate at 60Hz, as recommended.  The thing works well at a reduced window size but not at full screen.
The only way I can recover use of the mouse and keyboard is to "Conro-Alt-Del" and stop the program from running.  This condition has not always existed.  I have been able to run it at full screen in the past but that was several months ago.  Any ideas anyone? ? ?  Thanks,  JimCheck for updated vid card DRIVERS at the manuf. site....

However since it used to work and doesn't now something is wonked...

You will need to post alot more info on your SYSTEM for help on that.

patio.  8-)Reconfigure the ingame resolution settings. Thanks, I will try to do that.,  JimSince you have a 19" monitor, set it to either 1024x786 or 1280x1024.

You may need to INSTALL monitor drivers (CD that came with your monitor) and the latest videocard drivers as well.

Allow me to explain. I just want to know if I can adjust the language of MsPaint, the image editing program. It's in a foreign language on my computer (preinstalled) and I'd like to make it English. Does anyone know if you can manipulate the language?I don't believe you can but i COULD be wrong...do you have an English version of WINDOWS ? ?

By the way what version of Windows are you running ? ?

Windows XP. I have a Asian Computer.OK i'm getting confused...which is real easy for me.
Is your version of XP English except for Paint ? ?

Go to Start / Programs / Accessories and see if you have 2 versions of Paint...try them both.

patio.  8-)

p.s. Check in your Programs listing for a program called "Restorator"...If you computer is in English and other THINGS are too but Paint is on it's own in another language you should try uninstalled MS Paint through the add/remove programs.  Restart your computer and then install MS Paint again through add/remove programs. Solve : e mails being sent without instruction?

Answer»

Hi
we suddenly started to get e mails about stock/shares that we could buy(if we had lost our marbles.).We ignored these and deleted them
Suddenly our computer has started sending the emails on to other addressess some seem to go through some seem to go to non known addresses or returned to sender.
I cannot see how to stop this
any ideas
Scan for viruses/spyware.Especially scan for trojans, although there has been some discussion about Ewido lately I'd still use it first.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/Have a read here also:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=zombie+mailwell I  downloaded defender then avg then trojan remover these all removed some spyware/trojan etc.
however the e mails went again. The machine SHOWS them as failed as the receipiant doesnt exist(some must get though.
the only thing I can think to do is buy the stock and perhaps they will go away
We have also now started to get emails TRYING to SELL me *censored*.(up to 10 a day) perhaps they know something I do not.
We are running WINDOWS xp with f secure protection.
any ideas ( as my wife is now very SUSPICIOUS!)I would contact your ISP about changing the e-mail account...unfortunately once those leeches get your addy who knows how many times it has been passed on...
Are you using any filtering software on that e-mail account ? ?

patio.  8-)Did you try Ewido?
Hint, you will need to update it prior to scanning.

Solve : place volume icon in taskbar unchecked at startup?

Answer»

XP PROFESSIONAL SP2, Pentuim 4 2.8Ghz processor, 503 MB ram.  Everytime I start the computer the USB hardware, network and volume icons do not come up in the taskbar.  I go to the control panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - and "place volume icon in taskbar" is unchecked.  I check the box and press apply and all the aforementioned icons show up in the taskbar.  I've run virus and spyware scans (Norton Anti-virus Corporate Edition, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and A-squared) and no malware is detected.  I've also run Registry Mechanic and repaired errors.  I've also run SFC.  This is a minor annoyance, as it doesn't cause any lack of functionality in the computer, but it bothers me.  I've also surfed the net for information about this problem, but haven't found an exact match so far.  Oh yeah, I get the same result if I log on as administrator, so the problem doesn't appear to be profile related.  Any suggestions would be most welcome.  Thanks.Did you disable any services?I actually went so far as to set all services to automatic.  Didn't help.  I tried disabling UPnP service (read that on some forum somewhere), but that didn't help either.  Thanks for the thought.Did you go to add/remove programs-Add/Remove Windows Components..
Uncheck everthing that is checked then recheck same items,Then Click Next?Perhaps the icons are hidden. Have you checked the system tray properties?  You can select how the icons behave. HIDE inactive, always hide, always show.Street1: I haven't tried that.  I'll give it shot.  The problem is on my comupter at work, so I won't be able to try until monday (it's friday night now), but I'll update as to whether that works or not.

2k_dummy: Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm pretty savvy around a computer and I always have my taskbars set to show everything all the time.  I like to know what my computer's up to.  Still, you never know when one might overlook the obvious.  I appreciate your help. Quote

HuH...?  ?

What the...

Anyhow, Windows does get lazy. Yesterday it REFUSED to load my profile and it gave me a temporal profile instead. Weird.Specifically, what USB devices do you have connected to the computer?  Have you checked the setting for volume icon on Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices?Good morning everyone!  Okay, I tried the unchecking and rechecking of items in add/remove windows components.  No change in the symptom.  My taskbar properties are set to show everything, hide nothing.  I usually have a USB floppy plugged in to the puter, but tried unplugging it and restarting this morning, still no change.  As far as the properties in the Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel go, every time I start the puter "place volume icon in taskbar" is UNCHECKED.  At this point no icons are visible in the taskbar.  When I check this box and press "apply" the icons in the taskbar magically appear.  The problem is that I have to do this EVERY TIME the computer is STARTED or restarted.  Thanks for the suggestions so far, but no winners yet     Arrrrgh!Okay folks, here's the deal.  After a fair amount of tweaking services, taking snapshots of the registry and looking at the task manager here's what I figured out. For some reason systray.exe was not loading.  I added it to the startup folder and voila!  Icons at startup.  I wouldn't call this a fix, as I still don't know why systray.exe isn't loading, but it's a workaround.  I would still love to figure out the root cause of the problem, so if any of you out there WISH to keep the ideas coming I welcome the support.  Thanks.

Solve : W2k Recovery Console problems?

Answer»

Does anybody here know how to use the W2k Recovery Console...
I shut down my PC and UPON Reboot

I get:

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or currupt.
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I can't figure out how to extract the SYSTEM file from the CD.

I EVEN tried to replace the files from another W2k desktop....lol.. No LUCK though..
Any help would be greatly appreicated.Do you have a 3.5 FLOPPY drive? :-?

You should be able to do a repair install with the 4 disk set.

Click on disk 1 through 4 that you unzip and number your floppy disks
1-4 this will make a boot disk set.

Solve : Win2K Installation Woes?

Answer»

Hi, everyone. You may remember me from the win2k product ID thread. Thanks to your help, I managed to get my installation going. Now, I'm having problems after the installation.

For some reason, Win98 is still on the system, but not completely. It displays as an option at startup, but when I choose it as my OS, startup just freezes. Win2K is the default, and seems to be working, but various programs I attempted to install won't, even though they should be Win2K compatible; installation is failing, or the program is installing and then keeps hitting me with error messages at startup. Microsoft Office and a few other big-publisher programs at installing fine, but many others that should are not. I'm think the leftovers of Win98 may be causing problems, but various attempts at reinstalling Win2K just won't get rid of it.

Thank you for any help that can be provided.Reformat before installing Windows 2000?The installation FILES are on my hard drive, not a CD, so I'm not sure that would be possible. Also, I don't know how to reformat.

Thanks for the help. You would do well to obtain a legal copy of Windows 2000 or XP.I did! I downloaded these files from e-academy, in association with Syracuse University. I can prove it if you could TELL me how! Quote

Ah, well I'm not asking you to prove it, I merely thought it would be better for you to have a bootable CD which makes everything a lot easier.

However, if that isn't the case, we'll have to do in in a different MANNER:

 • How is your HDD set up? How many partitions?
 • On what partition is Windows 98 installed?
 • On what partition are the Windows 2000 installation files?

Quote
Ah, well I'm not asking you to prove it, I merely thought it would be better for you to have a bootable CD which makes everything a lot easier.

Tell me about it!

I hae no partitions on my hard drive. (Well, the installation process listed 1, but I figured it's the same thing.) Both Win2K and the phantom 98 appear to be on the same one, but as I said the 98 OS doesn't work.

Thanks! If the Windows 98 OS doesn't work, how did you install the Windows 2000 OS?2 OS's cannot exist on one partition...whether you know it or not you have more than one partition on that HDD...

Run the HDD's diagnostic program and post the results...

patio.  8-) Quote

Win 98 isn't working now, but it was during the original installation. Now, I should be upgraded to 2k, but that little phantom 98 is still listed there during all my boots now.

I've tried repairing/reinstalling 2k several times now, and it continues to list 1 partition. That's what I think is causing the problem- 98 shouldn't be there, but is, causing problems for 2K.

Quote
Run the HDD's diagnostic program and post the results...

How do I do that? (Running the diagnostic, I mean.)Create a bootable diskette (Bootdisk.com) and type "Fdisk"

You're going to need a bootdisk to install Windows 2000 again, however, I need to know how many partitions you have and on what partition the Windows 2000 installation files are located. Here's the only partition listed by Disk Management...

Volume: (C:)
Layout: Partition
Type: Basic
File System: NTFS
Status: Healthy (System)
Capacity: 27.95 GB
Fault Tolerance: no
Overhead: 0%Then take Raptor's advice and do a format and clean install...

I still believe there is more than one partition but however it won't be the first time i've been wrong....

Heck, i got married once.Okay, let's speak to that end, then.

I'll try creating a book disk, which I gather should be a FAIRLY automated process. Now, would be able to install Win2K based on the install-files I downloaded to my hard drive, or do I should I try burning them to a CD or something? From there, how would I reformat the drive?

Thanks for all the help you guys are giving me!In what form did the installation files come?

Was it an .ISO or a folder with files?

Can you still burn them to a CD? That'd be good.
