Solve : Sharing Internet Connection Laptop -> Desktop (XP)?

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a shared Internet connection:

 • Laptop functions as a host and receives Internet through Wireless (Linksys) PCMCIA adaptor (Fixed IP adress)
 • Desktop has a VIA Ethernet NIC and is set to DHCP
 • Clean installation of Windows XP SP2 on the  Desktop
 • Laptop has a USB network Adaptor with a crossover cable hooked to the VIA Ethernet NIC

Why is Windows XP making this more difficult than it should be? It was VERY easy in Windows 98(SE), but I can't seem to get it done in Windows XP.. COULD someone walk me through the steps I need to take?

And yes, I looked it up on Microsoft.com but all I got was a picture of a crazy old lady that told me the exact same thing that's in the Help & Support files of Windows XP. And there's a reason I disabled that service!

Oh, and the stupid Network Connection wizard doesn't WORK. Has that thing EVER worked for anyone?  :-?It looks like you are attempting to use ICS but expecting an IP address from the router. It isn't working because the secondary nic on the laptop has no connection to the router. I don't know if this will work, but the only possibility I see is to set up the laptops host file to send the windows internal IP to the wireless cards IP. If it connects that way, the two computers would essentially be sharing the same IP address. I would use a wireless PCI card for the desktop. WORKS great for me.Hi there

You could start all the basic internet trouble shooting stuff, set to DHCP, same subnet range, etc
but I expect, (looking at your post count) you have tried all that.

I have never used one of these USB<>ethernet connection thingys.
Maybe it needs an updated driver?

Have you tired replacing the ethernet cable and/or checking all the connections are OK in the rj45 plugs?
You can used a network cable TESTER but you can also test it with a multi-meter.

Just thought try, just for a moment, turning off your firewalls on both systems.

Can they see each other in network places?

Steve

I can't get it to work, I'll just assume this is meant for grannies. let me grab the switch and resolve the problem.

Solve : clocking intergrated graphics?

Answer»

atm i have a measly 8mb of intergrated graphics that is being sucked from the SPACE of my RAM (making it now 504mb) i was wondering if there was a way to INCREASE the space that it is TAKING from my RAM. I was hoping to take it up to at least 32MB so i can play Halo CE. I have more than enough RAM to play the game so i thought it would make my computer cry if i lost a few MB. any help would be great.
thanks,
lukeYou need to access your BIOS and see whether it allows you to change the amount of memory designated for the video adapter.  I'd BET it will let you go up to at least 32MB for video, and maybe up to 64MB or higher.

Of course, if you really want to improve video performance for serious gaming, you need to install an add-on video card to replace the onboard video.Even if you SHARE the RAM, I doubt it will properly run Halo and other games

Replace the videocard if you intend on gaming with the machine.Check the system requirements for the game. I am positive you will come up short which cannot be corrected without a new video card. I wondwer if you have AGP or just PCI expansion slots?

Solve : windows xp, crash, reboot, white screen, repeat?

Answer»

Here's the skinny: My laptop is a Toshiba BRAND that RUNS Windows XP Home Edition

a week or two ago it started seemingly overheating and shutting itself down...even more recently its switched to randomly shutting down and rebooting, and even worse, randomly going to white screens. Now it just keeps rebooting at the start up screen or going to a frozen white screen (in which it like bursts into a full white from the center spreading out till it's all white). Once EVERY blue moon itll actually go to desktop and i can do something for about max of an hour then it turns off and starts over again. Here's what sucks worse, i GOT the chance to system RESTORE and all that...and it appeared to be fine, then boom in the middle of me setting up everything the way i like it it goes to w hite screen, great....

any suggestions on how to fix this problem? It sounds like a trip to the repair center is in your future. Is it worth fixing? Still under warranty, by chance?

Solve : Not detecting harddrives with different filesystem?

Answer»

well here is my problem

I recently had to reinstall my w2000pro  but when I did, I did it in FAT, which is not bad except I had additional hard drives with more memory that are in ntfs from the original install and now my pc doesn't detect them :-?

I know all my old w2000  stuff is still there because my wife did something by accident and my old desktop and setup came up???  recognizing all drives and background and all just like it was before I reinstalled???...so now I am trying to get my current system to recognize it or boot from the extras without having to change the harddrive order on the interior.

any help would be greatly appreciatedHow many drives are there? How are they partitioned? How did you manage to get Win2000 to install on FAT16?I have 2 additional drives. When I re-installed it GAVE me the option to install with NTFS or FAT32 so I picked FAT in case I couldn't get it I could put win98 on till I downloaded my bootdisks. I didn't even THINK about my other TWO drives at the time. There is only single partitions on each.OK, I guess we NEEDED to clarify terms. There are 3 hard drives in the machine of varying sizes? (You put that one has "more memory" but hard drives only have size, no memory.) The previous version of Windows was on this same drive?

Of these 3 hard drives only one has Windows currently installed on it? AND it is the C drive? If so, what are on the other drives and how are they lettered? And these two other drives use NTFS file system?ok excuse my termonolgy....I realize they have "size" not  memory, sorry.
That is correct , I have 3 drives of varying size....this is my desktop which is really old so my drives are small compared to the average of today's standards. My primary hard drive is extremely small like a Gig. the others are 2 and 6. The secondarys , I used to to basically store everything I installed since my primary contains my OS and one or two small applications and pretty much out of space. I do believe that the secondary also has a copy of my OS but am unsure . I know that when I reinstalled w2000 it said that there was another winnt folder and did I want to overite or install in another, since I didn't want to take the chance of erasing something that I needed, I installed it in a new folder winnt2 and that is about it. I HOPE you can help. Are they seen in the BIOS?

How to convert from FAT32 to NTFS in Win2K...

Here Ya Go

patio.  8-)ok, the plot thickens...I just converted my FAt to NTFS  so now everything is the same fs but it is still not detecting the extra drives :-?How can you convert them when it's not detecting them?

I converted the only hard drive that my pc is reading to NTFS. The other 2 aren't being detected. I thought it was because they were different FS but apparently not so I am back to square one with my 2 additional harddrives not being detected but they are all ntfs now. I don't know if the BIOS is seein them or not, how do i check? What is the computer or motherboard make/model. If your primary drive is 1 gig I don't see how you squeezed Win2000 in there, especially on top of an existing Windows installation. That just doesn't fit.

Have you changed any jumpers on any drives, or done ANYTHING other than just reinstalling Windows?

Thats it just re-installed windows. I formated the drive and deleted and created a partition but that is it and it is actually 813mb. I think win2000 takes up 634mb or something like that. I think I am goin to just remove it and switch the other drive as primary and see if it boots.

Use Partition Magic.Use Partition Magic OR remove ALL partitions, install DOS on the first 2 gigs, and then XP on the remainder. XP will install boot manager so you can access either when you boot. The XP portion will NOT be able to be seen or used by the when booted to DOS.

Thanks for your reply.  XP can reside on an NTFS or a FAT32 partition, though.  Obviously, NTFS makes better use of the space.Raptor & GX1_Man,

Thanks for the replies.  I had heard some not-so-nice things about Partition Magic.  Have you guys had experience with this program?  Is it reliable?

I had also found a program that I believe is similar to Partition Magic.  It's called BootIt NG.  Have you guys heard anything about this one?

Again, thanks for the help everyone.
Either will work for you if you carefully follow the instructions. There are horror STORIES about everytghing - even computers themselves, and MICROSOFT products!

As I said, you can do all of this without any additional software. It just takes some time and planning.Yeah, if you talk to enough people, you'll hear crazy stories about everything, I guess...

Anyway, is Knoppix capable of a task such as this, or am I barking up the wrong tree???   :-/

Resizing and modifying existing partitions is serious business. You can hose your whole system. There are Linux and Windows tools that may be helpful, but as I said.......

By the way, how is the ear, Vincent?A man with one ear listens more attentively.  Unfortunately, in this case, I've heard nothing useful as of YET...   :-/From my first reply:

Solve : msconfig problem?

Answer»

This is a new problem I havent come across before, I'm on Windows XP Pro SP2, Intel Pentium II processor, 400 MHz, 256 MB of Ram.
When I go into 'run' and enter 'msconfig' I get a window that pops up saying windows cannot find msconfig, make sure you typed it correctly or do a search, when I try others like regedit or taskmgr they work fine....
Any idea what the problem may be here? You might go here and download msconfig.exe: http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~merijn/winfiles.html.  They show:
Windows XP:  Download
Windows XP SP1: Download

I'll let you figure out which one you should get.  That's obviously not right. Scan for viruses and spyware.Thanx for this info soybean, in the first step it says to unzip the new file into 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache', that folder isnt even there, I guess its safe to assume I should create that folder and unzip it in there? Some oems in the Infinite wisdom , decided that the would leave the help and suport tool's out of there install.

if you have a real windows CD you should be able to install them, or if the oem left a copy of the CD on the Comp youll find them some where in the I386 folderYes, that might be the best way to get msconfig back.   I found a reference, XP msconfig, which says:

EXTRACT a New Copy of Msconfig.exe

Open a command PROMPT window. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

If you find this method unworkable for some reason, then I would go ahead and add the dllcache folder and install the msconfig file you downloaded.  Not having a dllcache folder in the System32 folder seems odd.  I was just LOOKING at dllcache contents in my computer; it contains a LOT more than msconfig. Its kind of strange, when I do the last step (Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries) the msconfig icon is there and works when I click on it, seems to be just the shortcut through the 'run' program doesnt work....W2K doesn't come with msconfig either, so I just downloaded a copy from the net & dumped it into my system32 directory. It's a stand alone program so as long as you put it in a directory that's in your path it will work.

I haven't yet tried reinstalling windows maybe that WOULD work but too much of a hassle for me.i would look into the processes that are running on youre computer and see how much Memory they are using.
check to see if there is a fair bit  Virtual Meeroy use it will slow down .
andYou can dload and run diagnostics on that HDD from the manuf. site...BTW how much free space is on the Windows drive ? ?
Should be a minimum of at least 15%

Solve : floppy drive.?

Answer»

Hi,

Here is something seems odd to me. Nowadays, except for some very rare occasion, there's hardly any USE for a floppy drive, I know some newer systems don't even come with a floppy anymore, but most older systems won't even start without a floppy drive installed even when I set the BIOS to boot from HD. Is there any WAY to by pass the floppy altogether or some ways to trick the BIOS into thinking there is a floppy drive? I would think it will be PRETTY easy to do.

MacPCOf the many things the BIOS LOOKS at, hardware is FOREMOST.  If it doesn't 'see' something there it won't show up.  I don't believe there is a way to 'trick' the BIOS into thinking something is there that isn't.

Solve : system resources low?

Answer»

I am unable to get into 'Word', each time that I try I get a message on my scream saying that 'I am dangerously low in resources'  Any ideas what I can do?  Thank youWhat else does the message say? When did this start? What if you restart the MACHINE? What malware protection are you using? What all is running at STARTUP?

Without details from you, expect only some random GUESSING. See below.try closing ALL but essential programs you are running, increase the disk CACHE, (PAGE file) to double whatever it is now.

restart your computer,  Start word as soon as you can after windows starts, if you still get the error message your stuffed.
I would then suggest a re-install of windows if you still get the error.

Unless someone has other suggestions.

steveIf I remember Windows 9x had some kind of upper limit on the amount of system resources it could use.512 on system memory unless a few minor tweaks were made.

Solve : Monitor goes blank?

Answer»

I have a Pent III 550 with Windows ME & 98SE. After either a few mins or a few hours, the monitor goes blank by itself & the only way to re-start it is power-off & on again. I SWAPPED the monitor with one on another pc & it still happens. I had a pc tech GUY look at it & he said its common with Pent III pc's. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I forgot to add that I thought it was the video card so I bought a new one but it still does it. Also the power settings are disabled in both the Windows & the bios. When the monitor go black, is the PC still runnung? ie, can you hear any sight that the HD is make sound, the power LED is on ETC?

MacPCYes the led light is still on & fan still going but the hd doesnt spin coz the keyboard is unresponsive.  In other words, its "dead" even though the light is still on. Quote

I swapped the monitor with one on another pc & it still happens.

Please clarify. Does the new monitor on the old computer keep turning off, or does the old monitor on the new computer keep turning off?The monitor from the second pc goes blank on the Pent III 550 pc & the monitor from that pc WORKS ok on the second pc.

In other words, its the Pent III 550 pc which is the problem.

I'm sure that should clarify it all

Quote

Some PC technician. Did he tell you anything else?

He did say that he can tinker around with it & say he thinks he's fixed it & yet when I get it home, find that its not fixed.

He didnt charge me for trying to find the problem & doesnt want to charge me for saying that he's fixed it when its unfixable.
Does the PC simply shut down when the monitor goes blank?Do you use add on video card or onboard video? Are you able to start it in Safe Mode? If so, while you are in Safe Mode, do a complete virus scan. It does sound like a hardware problem tho.

MacPCWhat happens if you were to enable the power setting in the BIOS?

Alan <><  Raptor: if you read my third post, I said that the led (power) light is still on & the fan is still on etc. So no, the pc doesnt shutdown.

MacPC: if you read my second post, I said that I replaced the video card which means its an add-on video card. I did virus scans with Norton & AVG and also spyware scans using Adaware, Spybot & Spysweeper. Safe-mode hasnt done anything.

ale52: the monitor doesnt go blank only at idle, it sometimes does it when i'm actually using it so the bios power setting is irrelevant. Quote

My idea is that the guy is a spudhead.

What is the make/model/wattage/history of the power supply unit.

What make/model of machine is this? What components and age? Has it had a rough life?

If using an addon card is the onboard disabled, or does it do this automatically?

Raptor: if you read my third post, I said that the led (power) light is still on & the fan is still on etc. So no, the pc doesnt shutdown.

Oh, well sorry for that. I read a bloody +50 posts per day so you don't have to remind me what you allready said because I obviously won't remember.

Well, if a PC technician couldn't fix it on the spot I suppose we can't do so either from our desk seats.

GX1_Man: I live in Melbourne, Australia so the make, etc of the power supply is of no relevance unless you live there too. The pc is an IBM clone bought new from a reputable pc shop 6 years ago

I dont know what rough life means but I treated it with GREAT respect. I never hit it or thrown it out the window or poured a bucket of water on it. Apart from a noisy fan on the old video card, it's never let me down.

Its not an integrated m/b so its always had a dedicated video card.

Raptor: I posted the problem to see if anyone had any ideas, not a guaranteed cure. But I appreciate everyone's input.

Exactly what does Windows do when you first connect your camera?  Can you post a screen print?  Do you know how to cut and paste files using Windows Explorer?

Do you simply intend to put all your photos directly in My Pictures folder?  No sub-folders?  You can avoid this problem by creating folders within your My Pictures folder.
marshall2006.... Do you have the ability to select what folder or where to D/L the pics to........? you should be able to .........
Now as to the issue re D/L more ........
Think about ...... if your cam assigns a number to each pic....... and you D/L them in the default folder........ then you delete those pics from the cam......
Now you take more pics ...and guess what ....... the cam will assign a number to the new PHOTO ...... and because it usually STARTS with 00001 or some other number , that number already exists in the downloaded pics ....so you should either rename the first batch of pics you D/L into that folder because the 00001 already exists ....... or you will be offered the option to overwrite the existing ...... but you dont want to do that ....or you loose the first one numbered 00001

dl65  I usually go grab the pics off the camera instead of letting Windoze do it for me.  That way I have control of what goes where.

Solve : error message at startup?

Answer»

hey, please help me. When i start my computer i get an error message, it says that there was a error at startup, and it closed down windows so it wouldnt harm the computer. It said that i should remove any newly installed software or hardware. Then i used that thing, where you can get the computer back into the shape it was before the problem, or when i bought it. So i did that, but when i started the computer again it displayed the error message again. Then i restarted my computer, but then i got a black screen with some options, safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, start the computer with the last known good konfiguration and start windows normal. But when i choose the 2 last ones, i get the error message over and over again. Then i tryed safe mode and it worked, i got into safe mode and restarted the computer and it worked perfectly. But then the next DAY i started my computer again, and the error message came back. I have lived with the proces of starting safe mode, restart and play, but if somebody could help me i would be really GREATFULL    please help. Not before.Well, you're the person wanting help.  Deciphering something like that takes longer for the viewers.  Why would expect viewers to make the extra effort to read that long series of run-together sentences?Okay im sorry . Im not that good at grammar, i have only had english for 1 year. Hope this helps.

patio.  8-)What operating SYSTEM are you using?

Start in Safe Mode and check your Device Manager for problems. How about details on the computer itself, and if you have a real Windows CD to reinstall if needed?

Any power surges before this started? Do you have a grounded outlet, a power strip, a UPS or what in use?I have Windows XP Media center edition, version 2002, with service pack 2.
My computer is a Packard Bell, AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core processor 4400+, 2.20 GHz, with 2 Gb RAM.
My power SUPLY on the computer is a power strip.
I dont have the original XP cd, it was already installed when i bought the computer. And how do i find the Device manager.Right-click My Computer / choose Manage.  Device Manager is on the left side of the screen.

Double-click it and you'll see your configured hardware on the right side of the screen.

That can not be related to your system; photobucket is web based and everything and the pictures that you upload is stored on their hardware.

soybean...  most of those artists would be using the free account.  Mine was the free one too.   It wasn't just the old photos which were deleted.

Raptor.... okay, thanks.... I didn't know.

I think Photobucket is a FANTASTIC service, very generous with their free hosting..... I'm sure there must be a valid reason (or a glitch) as to why and how this is happening.

Thanks guys.. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

PThey have some limitation on monthly data transfer, and maybe disk space, on the free accounts.  I don't recall the exact details.  I wonder if that was the problem.  PERHAPS they automatically delete images if the allowed disk space is exceeded.  I would think they would notify the accountholder, but I'm not sure what their procedure is.

Solve : Weird Freezing Problem...?

Answer»

I'm running ME on my computer and for a long time now I've had this problem where my computer freezes. The thing is it only does this between midnight and about 3 AM for some reason. It will suddenly freeze up with this little distorted line going across the very top of the screen. Sometimes I can press a button and it'll go to the blue screen saying 'system is busy' and then I can hit another button and it will go back to normal like nothing HAPPENED. But most of the time it becomes unresponsive and I have to hit the reset button on the computer.

I just find it odd that it would always do it within that time frame. The only other time I've seen that distorted line across the top of the screen was when I accidently pulled out the USB cable for my camera without clicking on the little USB icon first.

Any ideas what it could be? It's just starting to get a little bit old because I can't run any programs during the NIGHT since that tends to mess everything up. Thanks in advance.Hi,

More info is needed, What PC? What OS? What were you doing at the time? What did you have for dinner? j/k   etc.

Do you have any scheduled task(s) running around that time frame? Try this may help, around the thim it freezes, restart the PC in Safe Mode any keep it running in Safe Mode, see if this happens.

MacPCLets see its an AMD Sempron(TM) 2400+ with 256 MB ram and it's running windows ME. The graphics card is a few years old, a Geforce 2 mx400. Everything else is attached to the board so I'm not sure about that.

I don't know about scheduled tasks, it doesn't matter what programs are running it will do that EVERY night between midnight and approx. 3 AM and it's been doing that for a a few months now. I forgot it also does it sometimes when I try to shut down/restart the computer. When the programs START to shut down it will freeze up with that same distorted line on the top of the screen.

Sorry I'm not much of a computer guy, I'll try and get more info if you need it.Scan for viruses and spyware.

Get the latest updates for Windows ME as well. For checking schedules go to Control Panel and click on Scheduled Tasks...it could be either defrag or possibly your AV program updating.

patio.  8-)Did it again last night but I caught it this time, hehe. But it doesn't LOOK like there is anything in scheduled tasks that could be doing that.Knowingly or unknowingly, there's got to be a scheduled task going on. It could be an anti virus program, could be a disk back-up program, Windows scheduled update or even a virus, spyware adware planted on your pc without you knowing it.

Start your PC in Safe Mode, then do as Raptor suggested, run a complete virus  and spyware adware scan first, then go to Add/Remove Program and find out if you have any disk back-up and/or anti-virus programs installed, if so go to the program to change the scheduled time or simply uninstall them for now (you can always reinstall them later.). clean the registry then restart your pc again in Safe Mode.

Solve : How Do You Turn Back On The Internet in XP ??

Answer»

Hi and THANKYOU for your help.

A sonly Vaio laptop with Windows XP.

Now unable to connect to the internet.

It was connecting fine for months
(Internet connection works fine tested with an other computer. LAN high speed cable)

A few months ago it did the same THING in my home.  At that time I looked around and found out a "switch" wasn't CHECKED and checked it and it worked fine until now.

But... the laptop is thousands of miles away and I don't know what to tell my son on how to fix it.  I don't remember how it's done, too turn the switch so the internet will work again.

What do I tell my son miles away how to fix the computer so he may connect to the internet again?

Thank you.

"Switch"?Yes... switch for lack of the correct word.

It was a check box when I first was able to get the internet to work again.  You know one of those white box's and you CLICK on it and it puts in a check mark.  Thats what I call a switch.    Hope this helps makes it easy to understand now.  Thanks.So...hardwired it works fine, right?  Then I'm ASSUMING that he's trying to connect thru a wireless connection?   :-?

I know that on HP laptops there is a "switch" but it is a physical one on the laptop that you must enable for it to have wireless capabilities.

It must be in the software that is used for the wireless connection.  What does he use to connect?

You do realise there are about a 100 checkboxes in Windows, right?

You're going to have to be more specific or tell us what type of network you have and how it is currently configured before we can help. How I got it fixed last time was to going into mycomputer  file ( I think) - then  clicking until it was something like a list of items like if you want java on or off.  I'm using old computers and ME so I'm not up to date with the new set ups.  It was  simple... if only can remember.  It could even say Lan or .... and give box to check.

Maybe my question is where is this file that shows this list of box's to check to turn off or on.

No special software for internet connection - as whats on XP.
I think I know what you did.

Go to IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connection tab -> "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"

Is that what you were looking for?

Uninstall the last update listed...
TRAVEL to the update site and dload the one you just un-installed...
Install it manually...
Re-boot and turn on auto updates...
Click Windows Update from the START menu and you should be good to go...

Solve : Would a P 3, 800mhz processor work for XP Ho?

Answer»

I was wanting to know if in the real world a Pentium 3 , 800 mhz would work good, or just so so, for running XP Home SP2?

I have seen the required specs for XP Home and it says 300mhz minimum.

The computer this may be LOADED in has the Pentium 3, 800mhz processor, 30gb harddrive, 256mb of memory.Fordtruckmaniac..... It will work just fine . I have one machine with a p3 550 running XP home ( 512 mb of ram)..... It works just fine . ( I don't run any games on it )

dl65  dl65,

Thanks for the quick response.

My sister was given this computer. It is an older home built unit. Asus P3C-E motherboard. It has 98SE on it, just reloaded, and re-setup. She is now wanting a newer OS.

She was THINKING of going up to ME at least. But heck I have seen you can get XP Home for not very much more.

I told her I would check here to see if it would run without problems.

She is going to up the memory to 512mb, it will take 1GB.

Thanks,
Avoid ME like the plague. It is just Windows 98 with a few more frills... not worth the money to "upgrade" such a short distance.Win2K...I'm running XP Pro on an 800MHz PIII with 512MB of RAM. Works great. It is a little sluggish compared the GHz machines I've used, but nothing to cry too LOUDLY about. With the help of a 256MB ATI 9600XT graphics card I can play some fairly graphics intense games with acceptable speed. Trackmania Nations and Lego Star Wars run nice and smooth.

XP Home will be just fine on that setup.

--OoberThe 512 RAM will certainly make it more enjoyable, but Win2000 would, in fact, be a downright speedster, even with 256 RAM.   Quote

The 2000 I have seen is a expensive as XP Pro.  :-?

I have looked quite hard at it.

Is it safe to buy software from the online stores? As long as they have the COA
and valid product key?

Thanks,
It's certainly safer with Win2000 as there is no activation scheme to make it work.

No version can be legally downloaded.  I have never bought an O/S online but have seen OEM versions just the O/S without the fancy box & instructions for $50.00 look around & check eBay.

Thats not much more or the same price as what a person would FIGHT around on e-bay to buy.And no surprises. It would have an unused registration number, be genuine, and RETURNABLE if any problems, backed by a great company.  I have bought some memory from them.

Worked fine and was shipped fast.Try the Campus Bookstores if you have any around or near you....my copy was $20.00 bucks.

Solve : Modem misdialing?

Answer»

This is a FRIENDS PC running XP. He has just moved house and now his modem doesn't work. I don't see the connection here (neither does his computer)...

Anyway when he called me for help (after suggesting he turn it off and on again etc)  I told him to ensure that the phone line was plugged in OK and if that didn't work to try another cable - just in case that one had been damaged. None of that worked so I now have the ailing machine here to check out. Everything else works.

Now - before I INSTALL a new modem, here is the problem.
It dials and you can hear it clearly.
The number it says it is dialing is the one you want.
However, a little voice can be heard, which is probably saying "you have dialed incorrectly, please hang up and try again". Showing error 676.
I set up a NEW connection with my own ISP. Same problem.

Things I have tried.
1/ Lowered the dial speed.
2/ Unchecked 'check for dial tone'
3/ Made sure the country was correct
4/ Dialing with/without the area code in the box
5/ New phone leads (the ones I use)
6/ Looked for h/w conflicts - none. Com port OK
7/ Diagnostics on modem - said it was OK.
8/ Ran Norton antivirus - nothing to report

I cannot understand why this has suddenly occured, unless the 'puter was upset travelling to his new house.

ANY Ideas would be welcome.

Thanks for lookingIs there another empty PCI slot you can MOVE it to ? ?
Or is this an external modem ? ?
Wait for dial tone should be checked.
I'm assuming his phone dials out on this line with no problem ?

patio.  8-)It is an internal modem, an intel one. I will swop slots and see how that does.
Thanks.Perhaps it got knocked loose?Well if it was loose, it would have been reset when I changed the slot.
After the CHANGE I tried again - no change.
ANYWAY
I had a new modem on the shelf so popped it in the old slot and everything works.
Now I am a hero to my friend.
I know HOW horrible it is when your modem throws a wobbly... You feel like you have been abandoned by the world. Left to fend on your own. Brrrr sends a chill.

SO
I would just like to thank you for your kind thoughts and ideas on this problem and as to why it occured we will never know, just speculate.
Like you said, it could have worked loose.

Anyone for a beer?Sure....

Solve : Unwanted Closing of Programs?

Answer»

Lately my computer is closing things on its own, while I'm in the middle of using them.  Whether it's Netscape, Winamp Music Player, or even my virus programs.  Things are just shutting down on its own.  I'm not sure of what to do to rectify this because I can't even scan my computer.  Anyone have a suggestion?  I'm using an AMD Athlon Processor XP 2400+ with Windows XP SP 2.  Are just the programs closing or is the machine itself shutting down ? ?

Try re-booting into Safemode and running all your protection scans...

patio.  8_I rebooted in SAFE Mode so that I could finally run my scans.  I used norton ANTIVIRUS, ewido, ad-aware, and spybot.  UPON rebooting my computer in normal mode now, the problem is still happening.  I came home and my AIM had shut itself off.  Netscape also just closed on its own.  My computer itself is not totally rebooting, just these applications.  Any other suggestions? Is Norton Anti virus still valid?I'm not sure what you mean...I have a one year subscription that ends at the end of this month, but as far as I know it's valid...And it detects absolutely no VIRUSES?

Have you scanned in safe mode with SYSTEM Restore turned off?

Solve : Installing Programs with Administration.?

Answer»

Is there a way to install programs without getting administrative RIGHTS?

I want to do this mainly to protect my computer from programs randomly writing in the REGISTRY, and protect it from possible malicious code accessed through admin status.

I know that programs work just fine without installing with Admin properties. I have a special SECTION in my My Documents folder just for installing programs under my non Admin account.

But some programs AUTOMATICALLY ask for Admin Rights or else they won't install, or they will install, and roll back changes because you don't have admin.

Windows is so rediculous in that sense.

So is there anyway to get around it?

Windows XP Quote

Just keep track of what you install, read license agreements and don't let other people use your PC.

If you want to have better control over what you can and can't install, get Linux...I'm confused...but that doesn't take much.
If you have Admin rights you can install to any one account; a set of accounts or to all accounts.
This is why there is an Admin setting in XP.
It sounds like you are attempting to circumvent Admin rights or do you just mis-understand how they are used ? ?

patio.  8-)Well, Basically I want to circumvent admin rights, but don't get me wrong, I have the admin account for my computer.

I did use linux for a while, but I dunno. I stopped. lol. I missed XP compatibility with everything.

What I Really want to do is install programs without letting them have complete access to the computer. You can't. How else are you going to install the programs, then? They need admin access to write to the registry..Grab Total Uninstall...it monitors ALL changes made when installing a program, records that and in the EVENT of an un-install it gets rid of everything and restores the registry to it's prior state.

patio.  8-)Sounds good, is that freeware?

Solve : Synchronize colors fullscreen/cmd prompt window?

Answer»

I tried this question in the MS DOS forum with null reaction, so maybe I'm better off here.

I am running a DOS program which changes some of the basic 16 screen colors by calling int 10h ax=1010h to set the DAC registers for VGA.
The program works correctly under pure DOS.
In a command prompt window or fullscreen command prompt under W95/W98SE the wanted colors are displayed correctly.

Under W2000/WinXP it only changes the colors when RUN in fullscreen (Alt-return). When returning from fullscreen to windowed command prompt the changed colors are not transferred to the window.
How can I make the command window under W2000/WinXP honor the VGA DAC-registers set by my program?

Thanks for any hint.

jamaHave you tried using Dosbox(Click)?I believe it's because a minimised window is displayed by Windows properties not command / DOS in full screen mode....think about it.

patio.  8-) Quote

Have you tried using Dosbox(Click)?

Thanks, Raptor, for the question/advice, I'll give it a try personally. On the other hand my program is distributed
as freeware via Simtel and a couple of other channels. I'd rather not force POTENTIAL users to implement
yet another resource to be able to run my program.

Thanks anyway,

jama Quote

patio.  8-)

Thanks patio,
I'm aware of that. The command window in W2000/WinXP allows via right clicking its titlebar to change the default colors used for this window. These settings are stored in the registry, from where they are fetched  when a command window is OPENED. The problem is that my program attempts to set its own (user chosen) private colors (color content RGB-values). This means that I'm
not helped by any pre-defined colors since I cannot know in advance the colors a potential user is going to use, i.e. the colors are being changed when the window is already open and the program is already running. It looks like the clever Microsoft programmers did not synchronize the colors used in the window with the colors set in the VGA DAC-registers by int 10h ax=1010h.
I'm looking for a way to perform exactly that synchronization in W2000/WinXP. In W9x it already worked PERFECTLY.

Cheers,
jama

Solve : Deleting email memory?

Answer»

this is kind of a silly question but it's been taunting me for years.  I have a Dell computer, use Windows 2000 and it remembers every email ever used to log in to something.  Like SAY I am logging in to gmail...EVERYTIME i typed the wrong letters or something it just SAVES it forever to when I start typing in the email address to log in, below I get a list of 20 emails to choose from.  (yes, i am that bad of a typist).  It also remembers every subject line i've ever typed.  It's annoying!!! I delete cookies, clear history, etc but these things are never cleared.  Can you help me?Download CrapCleaner(Click) which can do that for you (And much more).

I forgot how to do it manually because I never use Internet Explorer. You could probably delete each entry by pressing the 'delete' button as WELL, though.tried it...i can't even right click on them...thanks though! Not right click, press the 'delete' button on your keyboard.

Did you try the software? It can clean up all your user tracks for you..Untick the boxes in the IE autocomplete feature and delete the existing file.

ahhhhhh!!!!! thank you!!! it worked!  thank you thank you thank you!!!If I is the ONE you is thanking then - you're welcome..  Thanks for coming back at us..

BTW the list you was getting is a list of url's not e-mails - little point but big difference.

Bonne chance

Solve : Uninstall Network Magic?

Answer»

Hi,

The following is the instructions from  Pure Networks to uninstall their Network Magic program  , hope you get the good laugh of the day, enjoy.

MacPC.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These instructions should fix your problem.

These instructions are for removing Network Magic from your computer if you encounter errors when TRYING to remove it with the Windows Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs."

To perform these steps you must be logged on to your computer with an account which has administrative control.

First uninstall Network Magic via the uninstall option in the Pure Networks group on the "All Programs" menu under the Windows "Start" button or with the Pure Networks Network Magic entry in the Windows "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel.

Some elements described below may have already been removed during previous uninstall attempts. If an item is already MISSING, move on to the next item.

- Click on the Windows "Start" button.

- Click on "Run..."

- In the "Open:" field of the "Run" dialog type "regedit" (without the quote marks) and click the "OK" button. This will open the registry editor.

- What follows is a list of folders, seperated by slashes. Each folder is nested within the previous folder in the list. Click the + symbol to the left of a folder to open it which will display the folders within it. For the last folder in the list (Run) we want to display its contents, so click on the folder itself rather than the + symbol to the left of it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

- Within the "Run" folder is an item labelled "nmapp". Click on it once to highlight it and then press the "Delete" (or "Del") key on your keyboard. When asked "Are you sure you want to delete this value?" click the "Yes" button.

- Next click the - (minus) symbol to the left of the folders you have opened. Do so in the reverse order from the order they were opened in (work your way back up) until you've closed the "Microsoft" folder.

- Now scroll down until you find the "Pure Networks" folder. Click on it once to highlight it and then press the "Delete" (or "Del") key on your keyboard. When asked "Are you sure you want to delete this key and all of its subkeys?" click the "Yes" button.

- Next click the - (minus) symbol to the left of the folders you have opened. Do so in the reverse order they were opened in until all visible folders again have a + symbol to the left.

- Once again, what follows is a list of folders, seperated by slashes. Click the + symbol to the left of a folder to open it to display the folders listed within it: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Pure Networks

- Click on the "Pure Networks" folder once to highlight it and then press the "Delete" (or "Del") key on your keyboard. When asked "Are you sure you want to delete this key and all of its subkeys?" click the "Yes" button.

- Close the Registry Editor by clicking on the X in the upper-right corner of the Registry Editor window.

- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files

- Locate the "Pure Networks" folder once to highlight it and then press the "Delete" (or "Del") key on your keyboard. When asked "Are you sure you want to remove the folder 'Pure Networks'and all its contents to the Recycle Bin?" click on the "Yes" button.

- Empty your recycle bin.

- Next - Click on the Windows "Start" button.

- Click on "Run..."

- In the "Open:" field of the "Run" dialog type "MMC" (without the quote marks) and click the "OK" button. This will open the Microsoft Management Console.

- Press the "Ctrl" and "m" keys at the same time to open the "Add/Remove Snap-in" dialogue

- On the "Standalone" tab click the "Add..." button near the lower-left

- Click on "Certificates" and then click the "Add" button

- Choose "Computer account"

- For "This snap-in will always manage..." make sure "Local Computer" is selected and click the "Finish" button.

- Click the "Close" button on the "Add standalone snap-in" dialogue.

- Click the "OK" button on the "Add/Remove Snap-in" dialogue

- You should now be looking at the "Console Root" dialogue

- Click the "+" symbol to the left of the WORD "Certificates"

- Click the "+" symbol to the left of the word "Personal"

- Click on the "Certificates" folder (below the "Personal" folder)

- In the right side of the dialogue you should see a small certificate icon followed by the email address you USED when downloading the trial. Click once on it to highlight it and press the delete key on your keyboard or the red X in the console dialogue, confirm the deletion when asked.

- Close the console and choose "Yes" when asked if you want to save changes.

- Restart your computer

To reinstall Network Magic visit http://networkmagic.com/download/ NO THANKS
They certainly take the time to write comprehensive guides..

Why do you have to mess with 'certificates'

what type of program is this?It doesn't say "Format the HDD and reinstall your OS and Programs ".....

patio.  8-)This is an innocuous free download from DLink and others to simplify your home networking experience. Unfortunately if you needed something to simplify doing that, these instructions are waaaay beyond your capabilities anyway. So it's harmless, then?"Why do you have to mess with 'certificates' "
Who knows!  :-? What the *censored* is this certificate thing anyway?

"It doesn't say "Format the HDD and reinstall your OS and Programs "..... "
Thank god.

"So it's harmless, then?"
Actually it's not a bad program if you have a complex network. It clearly lays out the entire network on your screen disregard what OSs you have as long as it Windows compatable. If it was free I would use it, I just don't feel the need to spend $70 or so to buy it. Just don't uninstall it tho.

Thanks,
That's a typical about:blank homepage hijack.

See here.

There's a removal tool ad at the top of the page.

These have to go:
 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank

As well as other hidden bits & pieces.  Lots of info and removal TOOLS on the WWW.

CWShredder, SpyBot S&D, AdAware and any other scan you can think of may be of help.

Good luck..
Have ran Avast AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot, A2 Squared. All updated prior to running.

Ad-Aware freezes up about half way through on the full system scan. It will run on the smart system scan however.

This OLD computer has been setting junked out from viruses and other crap for about 3 years.

I was cleaning it up for my grandaughter to play games on and maybe go online with.

Can anything else go beside the "about blank" items?

( Left out Ccleaner)

2 more tools you can try on that...

Ewido

Stinger

Both free.

Its an old HP Pavilion. I do not have the system recovery disk.

But I do have a straight up, shiny, holographic, Win 98SE disk. I can harvest the product key from the HP before hand.

Can a person go this route on a HP, format/install and such or EVEN fdisk first then format and re-install the OS?

If I can just simply do this, then its a go.

Thanks,You should be ABLE to. Do the amount of digits on the HP sticker match the amount of digits on the original Windows 98SE license sticker? Quote

Yes.Then I don't see a problem. The only thing I could think of that could be a problem would be the HP dial up modem and sound card being combined and getting the driver back in for both.

The device manager shows the modem as a Rockwell.

I will just make sure I have the correct dial up modem driver prior to wiping that way I can get back online anyway. That might be difficult, but HP will most likely have that driver available on their website.download all the drivers you will need and copy them to either a floppy disc or a cd. but really, the only driver you will need is the internet driver. once your internet is up and running you can download the rest of the drivers.Yes, I think I remember seeing it on HP's website when I was checking for available downloads for the specific model number. I guess we were writing at the same time.

Yes, that would be the plan.

Solve : Ok, I've been up all night trying to fix this and?

Answer»

Ok, I've been up all night trying to fix this and NOTHING seems to work. Last night, I was trying to start AOL from my desktop icon and my computer froze up, so I restarted it and it went through like it was getting ready to let me log onto Windows and instead I get the blue fatal error screen and it says this:

Stop c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000, 0x0000000 The system has been shut down.

I have no idea where to even begin, I tried Chkdsk /r and it said it fixed everything it could find wrong, but it STILL doesn't work. Then I tried this bootcfg /rebuild, and the only thing that changed is when I start up the computer, it ask me what version of Windows XP Pro I WANT to use and none of them work. I guess I also need to delete the two others I created?

I've also done STEP one in this process, http://webcast.broadcastnewsroom.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=8658-0, but when I tried to do step two, it still brought me to the fatal error screen so I couldn't get past it.

Anyway, that's pretty much all I've done...over and over.

Anything else I can try? If you need more info let me know, I'm not sure how much I can give you but I'll try, I'm desperate. Thank you  Can you still boot into Windows?nope, it just goes right to the blue screen! Before Windows loads, press f8 and select last known good configuration.

If that doesn't work, re boot, KEEP pressing F8 and choose Safe mode.
neither one works...still get the blue screen thanksHave you tried to reformat the HDD and then reinstall Windows XP? seems like the only option.

What have you done prior to trying to start AOL software? Installed new drivers?my cousin is telling me I need to reinstall XP...I'm thinking that's my only option.  The repair installation won't even worknothing, all I do on it is wordpad/AOL/a few games.  Haven't installed anything in ages.

If I do reinstall, how do I do it, do I need to delete everything and start fresh?  You can reinstall Windows XP by simply booting from the Windows XP installation CD. Follow the on screen instructions.

Before reinstalling Windows XP you should test the memory and Hard Disk Drive:

Memory can be tested using Windows Memory Diagnostics(Click)

The HDD needs to be diagnosed by software that can be obtained from the HDD manufacturer's webpage. What type of HDD do you have?ok, I have XP pro, and I realized I was using the XP home CD, would that make a difference?

If I do end up reinstalling, will I need to delete the current windows?

And finally, I have iTunes, will all of my songs from that be gone?  ThanksTry a repair install using the WinXP Pro CD...

Yes. You should always install a legal version of Windows XP. Or at least a version that comes with Windows XP SP2.

Yes, reformatting means losing all data on the partition/hard Disk Drive that you choose. This is always C:\

Quote
And finally, I have iTunes, will all of my songs from that be gone?  Thanks

Depending on where you stored them. If you reformat C:\ and your Itunes are stored on C:\, then yes, you will loose all your files there.

However, if you have the skills and another PC at your disposal you could mount the HDD in a different PC and copy the data you want to save.

You can not install Windows XP from the other PC, you will have to mount it back to do so.
I got it fixed - thanks!  I was ushing a legal version of both Home & Pro, I just had the disks mixed up.  I ran a repair install once I figured that out and all of my programs are still there...my wordpard documents are gone, which sucks, but I'll live.   All of my games, AOL, etc, is still there.

The only problem is now, every time I try to pull up iTunes, it says it has to close and asks me if I want to report the error to microsoft?  Try reinstalling ITunes, but back up data before doing so. Quote

Solve : device error?

Answer»

I'm a new MEMBER with a problem that I couldn't figure out how to solve it myself.
When I TRY to start my computer ( win 98 with intl pentium IV) the following errror appears :
"while initializing device VKB: window protect..." . The monitor stays blank and the cursor doesn't move either.
If VKB  means the keyboard or the vedio card. I switched both devices, still the same error. It doesn't even start in SAFEMODE.
Googled and came up with Virtual Bluetooth Keyboard.  Did you replace the keyboard with another VBK or PS/2 board?

Sounds like a wipe and reinstall.  Have you backed up all your data?

Alan <><  I seriously doubt that Win98 has any Bluetooth drivers if this is in FACT the case.

Solve : ADSL Modem Trouble?

Answer»

Hey I recently recieved a wireless ADSL modem router for our pc and laptop. (Model is NETGEAR DG834G v3 and speed is 54 Mbps) My internet is provided by AOL and I got an 'Easy-install CD' with it.
My computer is an XP Home Edition made by HP with 1G RAM and Intel Pentium 4 processor. It has 2 2.3Ghz CPU's and total of 120Gigs of disk space.

My main PROBLEM is with the connection between the modem router and my PC. I connected the ethernet cable firmly into the back of my router (in slot 1 of 4) and the other end into my PC's ethernet socket. Then I went to install and set up my new modem with the CD, but it says that the modem could not be detected. The LED on the modem also didnt light up where it should have shown that it was connected in slot 1.

However, when I tried to set up the modem on the laptop, the connection between the modem and the laptop was fine. The LED for slot 1 lit up and the installation went all the way through to the 'testing connection' bit where it checked all the connections (but it FAILED the last test because the laptop didnt have AOL on it).

So I definitely know that there isn't a problem with the NETGEAR unit. Now, when I plug the ethernet cable into my PC, it 'installs' the device and shows up in my Network Connections as Wireless Network Connection. I did a Device Manager check and the device which was installed is Accton WN4201B(EU) 802.11g Wireless PCI Card under the Network Adapters heading. But there is still no connection between my PC and the router as shown by the unlit LED and also by the continuous 'Easy-install' failure.

Can anyone help me solve this frustrating problem? (And yes I have checked that the wires are all in properly)

*edit replaced 'regedit' with 'Device Manager'*Try another NIC card...if this is onboard NIC remember to disable it in the BIOS with the add-on card.

patio.   8-)Well I am quite new with computing so I'm not exactly SURE what a NIC looks like, so I wouldnt know how to try a different one
Help... lol

Spikeyhog (noob)NIC = Network Interface Card....also known as an Ethernet Adapter...

About 10 or 15 bucks at any Comp store and plugs into your MBoard just like a sound or video card.

patio.  8-)Ok so that means my Accton WN4201B(EU) 802.11g Wireless PCI Card is a PIECE of hardware, but I googled it and there are sites to download this 'driver' (eg http://www.soft32.com/download_171222.html)

So now I'm confused! Can NICs be downloaded then? Which NIC should I get? Is there something wrong with my current one?

So many questions... thnx patio

And here is a pic of my Network Adapters (dunno if it will help and if u need any other pics then tell me)A NIC card is hardware...you already have the drivers installed according to your .gif.

I suspect the card has failed which means you can either borrow / buy another one and see if this is actually the problem...as i said they are not that expensive.

Make sure you uninstall the old one first before testing this.

Solve : Scroll keys don't work--sort of?

Answer»

My scroll keys don't scroll properly. When I'm reading a pdf cocument, they work OK, but on all other screens, Word, internet, whatever, and in Firefox or IE, I see the little I-shaped cursor doohickey MOVE up or down the page, zigzagging from line to line, TILL it reaches the screen top or bottom, and then the screen moves in the DESIRED direction.

I SUSPECT I've fatfingered a wrong key combination sometime, but don't know how to get things back to normal. All advice witl;l be received with gratitude.

Windows XP SP2, Intel Pentium III 1000mHz, 256 MB RAM, regular IBM keyboard. It is supposed to be like that I'm afraid. Try pressing the scroll lock key and seeing if that makes a difference. It should in Excel at least. Otherwise use page up and page down, or a scroll wheel on a mouse. Is this a wireless keyboard/ mouse combo we're dealing with ? ?Thanks for your answers, Neil and patio.

It didn't used to work like that; I could scroll with the up and down keys until the last few weeks. Page Up and Down still move me a page at a time.

Patio, it's an old-fashioned plugin mouse and keyboard, circa 2001."scroll keys", odd term.  I gather you mean PageUp, PageDown, Home, End, and the arrow keys, right?  The I-shaped cursor is normal when your mouse pointer is hovering over TEXT.  Have you never observed this? Are you sure you're not pressing down on the mousewheel too hard?He wants to scroll up and down using the arrow keys.Uninstall and re-install the mouse and keyboard (if any ) drivers...

Last option get a new keyboard. I replace mine once a year whether they need it or not...

patio.   8-)Buy a PS2 mouse with a scroll wheel, you will be as happy as a clam.

Solve : Bluetooth Places won't open.?

Answer» NEAT, thanks for letting us know.

What's AVRCP?Audio VIDEO REMOTE CONTROLL PROFILE. Fancy acronym meaning that little buttons on my headphones are supposed to advance to the next track, pause, play etc.

Headphones are working and my dongle supports AVRCP, but so far the buttons aren't doing anyting.
