Solve : Re: Downloading PDF files?

Answer»

Not sure what you mean by "tiny little square" - any chance of a screenshot? Have you tried right-clicking?

This problem CAN be fixed, but a bit more information would be helpful. Thanks for your RESPONSE;I did finally solve the problem. Briefly, I was told to download a municipal gov't. form to amend a wage TAX return. I FOUND the site, saw a list of forms, left-clicked the proper form, and got a blank screen with a tiny block at the left top screen. The block contained a square, a triangle, and a circle. When I tried to open this, nothing happened. Thus, my poorly phrased question. Solved it by right-clicking the proper form title in the list, saved TARGET as a FILE in My Pictures, and opened it with Acrobat Reader. Anyway, problem solved and I learned something new. Again, thanks so much for your response.

Solve : Oh God, my world...?

Answer»

Okay folks, this is how it is. I posted on here about a week ago saying that my computer, (a 2003 eMachines) wouldn't register that anything was connected to it, (ie. monitor, mouse, memory stick) The tower was still running, wirring and what-not and many people suggested it was probably the motherboard.

Well I congratulate you all on a correct guess. I took it in to a local computer place and they found out that, in fact, it was a "defective motherboard". Now her are my questions:

1. What the *censored* is a "defective motherboard"? or in other words, why did it just die, suddenly?
2. He said they are trying to find the EXACT matching motherboard and it's difficult, and if they do find the EXACT one it's gonna be pricey, and if they can't find the exact one, they are going to have to completely re-instal windows. No my question here is, am I going to lose everything on my HARDRIVE? Is there anyway to save my stuff from computer oblivion? I have 3 novels and everything i've ever written on that harddrive, as well as countless irreplaceable photos.

Now, I know, i'm a complete idiot for not backing up my files, but i'm jus ta stupid girl so give me a break, please.

Thanks for any help guys,

1. A defective motherboard might mean that the transistors (probably not the correct translation, see attached image) have started to leak and lost their ability to handle any type of power throughput. Or perhaps something has burned in or something shorted out. It's very difficult to tell because there are so many connections on one mainboard but sometimes you'll be able to tell a motherboard is useless by simply inspecting it with the bare eye.

2. What you can do is mount this Hard Disk Drive in another computer and bring your work to safety. The computer might be willing to do that for you as well (be VERY specific and persistent otherwise they might simply forget. Many people are negligent, don't forget that.)

Do you have another computer in your posession and the skills to mount/connect a second Hard Disk Drive?

Well, actually, you do not NEED to have the skills because we can talk you through it but you do need to know how to use a screwdriver. Okay, cool. And yes, my boyfriend, who I live with, and who's computer i'm on right now is our other source, however we both don't know if you can mount another harddrive onto it. How can you tell?

Thanks a ton!
Mandy1. What the *censored* is a "defective motherboard"? or in other words, why did it just die, suddenly?

It can die for a number of reasons: defective/weak electrical component / power suppy surge to the motherboard / cooling issues + a lot more

2. He said they are trying to find the EXACT matching motherboard and it's difficult, and if they do find the EXACT one it's gonna be pricey, and if they can't find the exact one, they are going to have to completely re-instal windows.

If you're running XP (I'm sure you are) they are correct in having to find an exact replacement because XP (& Windows 2000 for that matter) was set up so that it must have the same hard drive controller to work properly. That controller is located on the motherboard. If they DON'T find the exact board, or something VERY similar, XP won't like the controller and will give you a stop screen and that's it, game over I've read there are ways around that but I've yet to find one that works.

No my question here is, am I going to lose everything on my hardrive? Is there anyway to save my stuff from computer oblivion? I have 3 novels and everything i've ever written on that harddrive, as well as countless irreplaceable photos.

I would have these folks at the computer SHOP back up YOUR WHOLE HARD DRIVE to some other media, like DVD or a computer on their shop network, replace the board with whatever, and copy all that INFO back to your new install of Windows(if they have to do it that way because they couldn't find an acceptable replacement motherboard) to a folder and make a shortcut on the desktop to that folder.

That's what I do when I have a client that I have to wipe their drive and reinstall the operating system.

I don't think you're stupid, just didn't get the backup done. I know you'll learn from this experience and do backups faithfully from now on, right...right?

First of all, you need to know if there is still room for another IDE device inside the case.

You can have up to 4 IDE devices in one computer (CD-ROM and Hard Disk Drives are usually IDE devices). Inspect the IDE cable to see if you can add any devices. IDE cables are usually yellow and rubber-like or grey (And perhaps rubber-like) and flat

Once you've established that you can add another hard disk drive to your PC you should check to see if the device on the IDE cable you decide on using is either Master or slave (If it is the only device, it is Master) and then you have to set your the Hard Drive you intend on adding to Slave by using the Jumper that is located on the back of the drive.

If you have come this far, come back and I'll EXPLAIN the next few steps.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the advice and explaining things in a way so I actually understand it! I'll be sure to insist they save my stuff. The guy is calling me back around noon to let me know if they can track down the appropriate motherboard, so i'll let him know then.

Thanks again,

Solve : Cannot manually shut down background programs?

Answer»

Ok I am having a lot of ISSUES with my computer. Lots of spyware and so forth, Well today I tried manually shutting down background programs that are not needed at present TIME. Well to my dismay when I do: Ctrl, Alt, delete I get a message saying TaskManager has been disabled by the computer administrator. I know this not to be true, because I am the computer administrator and would never do that. I am wondering how do I enable it? I am at a total lost. Thank you for all your help in advance! "Ok I am having a lot of issues with my computer. Lots of spyware and so forth."

That is probably the gist of most if not all of your problems.

Have you done an antivirus / antispyware scan?...from Safe Mode with updated software for both?

That's a good place to start.

Alan <>< :-)Use a virus and spyware SCANNER in safe mode.

Repeatedly press F8 before Windows loads and CHOOSE "safe mode".There are quite a few services that are inter-dependent....so even though you stated you did not terminate task manager one of the other services you disabled might very well have.

Why are you terminating services on that machine ? ?

patio. 8-)This wont solve your problem, but in the meantime you could use a program called KillProcess, works great for shutting down any program you choose thats RUNNING, just make sure you know what programs you can or shouldnt turn off....

Solve : windows xp freezes upon start-up?

Answer»

For several days now, my computer freezes just a few minutes after I restart it, every time. This started one morning I went to go on the computer and it was frozen and since then just freezes every time I restart it. It's working in safe mode right now. I tried system restore but it told me no changes have been made to the system. How can I find out what the problem is?At what screen does it freeze at?

If you are lucky enough to enter safe mode you can run spyware/malware scans which might be causing the problem. It freezes whether I login to windows or not, it doesnt matter what screen it's on or what I'm doing. It freezes whether I login to windows or not, it doesnt matter what screen it's on or what I'm doing.

So it freezes at random TIMES during the boot process, right? Before you login...after you login...during the splash screen (Windows XP screen)...at the desktop.

Have you added any new software/hardware? Done any Windows UPDATES? Any eletrical problems in the house / apt? Do you hear any new/different sounds when the computer boots?

Can you boot into Safemode (tapping the F8 key when booting)?

Alan <>< Yes I'm in safe mode now and it doesn't freeze.
It's not exactly random, because it freezes after a certain amount of time after the computer boots. Like, I only have a few minutes to do anything after its starts. If I leave it alone on the login screen it will freeze after a few minutes, if I login and start doing something like the internet or anything it will freeze shortly after, etc. it works completely normal until it freezes.
I can't think of any changes that may have caused this, like I said it just started doing this one morning, and system restore says there have been no changes to the system.
Place your hand at the back of the computer by the power supply and see if you can feel any air flow.

Open the case (if you feel OK with that) and check the CPU cooling fan to see if it's on.

Sounds heat related or possible bad RAM.

Alan <>< I feel warm air coming out of the back.. but i don't know much about the inside of a computer. I think it might be something power related, though, because I've had problems with that before.I feel warm air coming out of the back.. but i don't know much about the inside of a computer. That's good. It means the power supply fan is working. Doesn't guarantee the power supply is work properly.

I think it might be something power related, though, because I've had problems with that before. What kind of problems? Like what you're having now? What solved it before?

Open the case (if you feel OK with that) and check the CPU cooling fan to see if it's on.

You don't have to poke around in there With the computer off, open the side, push the start button and see if the CPU fan spins. Nothing more.

I'll be leaving now as I'm going to a meeting at church this evening. Hopefully someone else will check this thread and give you some help.

Good luck

Alan <>< Okay, thanks.
I'd rather not open it up because I also have a problem with my video card not being screwed in properly and if I bump the computer it gets moved out of place and screws up the computer.

As far as the power supply problems, when I first got my ipod last year, a few minutes after I'd plug it in, the whole computer would just turn off. We called tech support and the guy told us the power supply wasn't strong enough or something, so I PURCHASED a USB port hub which plugs into a power strip and my computer and provides additional power to run my ipod.

I forgot to mention that one day after leaving the computer off for several hours it didn't freeze when I turned it back on. When I plugged the usb port hub into the power strip where several computer wires are also plugged into - without attatching anything to the computer- to try to put my ipod back on, it froze. I removed it and restarted it but it's still been freezing ever since no matter how long I leave the computer off for. So maybe it has something to do with the power strip? I don't know if anyone could understand that so i'll reword it if you didn't.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. Quote

Okay, thanks.
I'd rather not open it up because I also have a problem with my video card not being screwed in properly and if I bump the computer it gets moved out of place and screws up the computer.

Are you just missing a screw for that card? Stop by some local computer shop, if you can, and ask them for one. It's a simple step to securing that card.

As far as removing the side of the computer case as advised by ale52, do that with the computer turned off. Then, make sure you haven't jarred the card out of place before you start up. That's shouldn't be too difficult, should it?
If your video card is loose in it's slot that could cause the system to lock up. Secure it like Soybean suggested.

Try removing the computers power from the strip and go directly into the wall.

Alan <>< when you have to side panel off maybe get a can of compressed air and CLEAN it out in there (short bursts at a time)

that was the problem with a computer i had to fix it KEPT freezeing cuase it was over heating..

so blow the computer out and make sure that the fans are cleeanokay thanks everyone i'll work on this tonight and let you know what happensOkay I opened up my computer. I didn't have any compressed air but basically I just blew in it and choked on huge amounts of dust. lol. I secured the video card so that's not the problem.

oh, before i forget, as the computer was booting up I saw something that said battery low... could that have something to do with it?

I didn't see anything spinning in there when I turned it on, though. Could someone describe to me where the CPU fan would be?

One other thing- if it was power, heat, or ram related, wouldn't it still freeze in safe mode?

thanks

edit: I'll need a bunch of extension cords to plug the wires directly into the wall so I'll try it eventually but I don't have time tonight..the cpu fan will be the only fan on the mobo with the ram.. get some qtips and clean out the fan blades. you can get compressed air almost anywhere kmart wallmart radio shack

this is my first time here, please be kind i'm a newbee. I've got an HP pavilion dv8110us notebook pc with Windows XP Service pack 2. Can i DELETE SA.DAT from the decktop without worry OR can i drag&drop it into the C:\WINDOWS\TASK file OR ?. :-?
Awkward that it ended up on your desktop. Do you have an sa.dat file in C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\ ?

If not, PASTE it in there and see what happens, I think you should be safe. If there is one in there, backup the one on your desktop and paste it in the Tasks directory stated above. Try that at first and see if everything still works ok.answer to johnchain: No sa.dat is not in the Task folder. What makes you ask "Awkward that it ended up on your desktop."? and how do i backup the one on my desktop? What file size is it and I ASSUME you've virus scanned it.Does it appear on your desktop as a shortcut icon, one with the little box with an arrow inside, in the lower left corner of the icon? If so, you can probably just delete it to the Recycle Bin.

If you have partitioned ONE drive or you have two drives there should be a C and a D drive. D should be bigger and should have all programs placed in it. C should be reserved for windows files.

IF this is the case then simply remove applications from C and install them on D, this will give your computer more RAM to use for proccesses.Ummm ..., lil_falco, moving applications from C to D - a notion which is entirely speculative here, since we have no indication he has a partitioned single HD or two HDs - is not going to give his computer "more RAM to use for proccesses." Under such a configuration (i.e. C+D), it could solve a problem of cramped space on C slowing things down, but that's a separate issue from RAM. However much RAM he has installed is what he has, PERIOD. Quote

Solve : Freezing, but system drive is fine??

Answer»

Hi, I've had periodic trouble BOOTING into windows this week. Sometimes the BIOS won't recognize the system drive, sometimes it does. Now I'm getting a situation where I'm in Windows xp, the computer freezes and there's a high pitched spinning kind of noise which seems like a hard drive. I ran WD diagnostics on my WD IDE 40G system drive. It passed all the tests. So if my system drive isn't shot then what else might the problem be?It can only test the the drive's platters where information is stored not the mechanical part. If the hard drive makes such sounds, you should quickly back-up important files.

Are you certain it is not a fan that stalls and causes the PC to overheat?

Scan for Viruses, Trojan HORSES and Spyware as WELL to be on the safe side.Ditto Raptor. If the hard drive is making noise (and it SHOULDN'T), back up your data PRONTO and replace the drive.

Solve : how to retrieve the data in a corrupted Windows??

Answer»

I am not familiar with computer technically, but I WOULD try not to do anything SILLY in my PC, anyway!

I can see my WindowsXP only get a 20GB C drive, and no paritition.

I have 5 GB personal data in the computer.
I am thinking if there are tools that can be used to retrieve my data in case my Windows got corrupted or just stucked at the welcome screen.

Are you saying the machine is now wonked and won't get past the Start screen ? ?
If so there are procedures to try and salvage that data...

What i think you are saying is your expecting this to occur down the road. In that case I'd recommend a backup program such as Acronis True Image to REGULARLY backup your data...newegg.com has about the best price on it right now. At any price it's a good investment.

patio. 8-)To add to Patios suggestion:

Get another hard drive (internal or external) to back up your data to. If you back it up to the only drive you have and it tanks on you, backup software like Acronis (which is an excellent recommendation by Patio & about $30 at newegg as a download) won't do you any good.

Alan <>< In addition to what patio and ale52 said, do you have CD or DVD burner? Those, of course, would be a way of backing up your data. You might view this as a short-term solution and another hard drive (preferrably external) as the next step in increasing your backup capability.I have a CD burner, but don't have enough money for the software you have recommended to me.

Is it possible to USE commands to retireve the data from a corrupted windows before you have a clean installation?Since the only software recommended so far was Acronis TrueImage, I presume that's what you're referring to. Do you have burner software? I would think you do, since you have a CD burner.

As patio said, "Are you saying the machine is now wonked and won't get past the Start screen ? ?" Quote

As patio said, "Are you saying the machine is now wonked and won't get past the Start screen ? ?"

No, it is ok.
But I just would like to learn how to save the data from a corrupted system before I format it.

What about the answer to this:

It is. If your data on your hard drive is not corrupted and just Windows is crapped out, you can use a boot disk to get to a command prompt. http://www.bootdisk.com makes this very easy to do. Find your version of windows and download the utility, and run it to create a new boot disk.

Once you're at the command prompt, you can use some simple commands to retrieve your data (or what's left of it :-/ ) copy and move are very simple ones to use to transfer data to another drive, such as a flash drive perhaps? xcopy is actually very useful for doing large backups. brush up on your DOS commands, you can find many useful sites with GOOGLE.

Solve : Windows NT with a virus?

Answer»

There's not a lot of virus software that supports NT so I finally got a virus of some kind. Now everytime I DIAL into the internet (YES I'm still dialup too) it uploads (something?) until it crashes the computer. My problem is that NT was partitioned and C drive is real small (about 20 MB free), although D has over 2 GB. So most of the software that I'm finding wants to install on C which ends up being too small, or needs to do an online update right away, which crashes the system. I've tried a few programs, but they haven't worked. So, does someone know of some software that can clean the problem from D, or how to repartition the drive without losing data? Currently I have been using a new computer for my internet access which solved the problem, but I would like to get rid of the virus if possible. I know this doesn't answer your questions but if I were you I'd backup the data you need to save & do a clean install with W2K or XP on a LARGER HDD.First of all, it could just be the low disk space causing the problem. Secondly there are virus scanners for NT, just find them. Thridly there are utilities to repartion harddrives but they cost money - a clean format and install would be easiest.Neil and Fed...on target 8-)

You're looking at a lot of work to resurrect that old system.

Alan <>< What kind of anti malware applications do you have on that machine right now ? ?Norton that was last updated in 2001. That's when it quit supporting NT. I'm trying various things I can download but keep running into: Does not support NT, Only installs on C:, or wants to go to the internet to update, but then crashes in the middle.I believe AVG will RUN fine on an NT machine...

Solve : No mail coming thru / please help?

Answer»

I have Outlook express and receiving no emails . I can send . I have talked with my provider and they have no answer. any help is apprecited . I do not have any spam programs EITHER. I have windows xp . Thank you very much . RozWhen you click send and receive, do you see any error messages?Have you verified your email account settings in OE? If you go to Tools, Accounts, Mail, select your email account, select Properties, and then select Servers, is the Incoming mail (POP3) code what it should be?

Has this worked in the past? there are no error message . and all my settings are correct. Its really puzzleing . when you click and recive nothing . this started 2 days ago .Can you access you email via web browser? If you don't know, visit your ISP's website and look for info. I use OE and normally use it for my Earthlink email account, but I can also access my email via Earthlink's WebMail, using my browser. If you can do that, you could verify that you have mail out there that's waiting to be retrieved. You could do a test by sending yourself a message and seeing with it appears in your webmail access.yes I can access it thru IE . ALSO on the webmail account there is nothing waiting .Well, now we know the problem is not with OE. OE can't retrieve email when there's none on your ISP mail server waiting to be downloaded, which is what you verified by checking webmail.

Try sending a few test messages to yourself and/or ask someone to send you a message. You should be able to see them via web access to your email. If not, then you DEFINITELY have an issue to resolve with your ISP.

Does your ISP have a spam blocking feature that might be blocking your mail? Earthlink has a spamBlocker. Users can choose among three levels of strength. I have it set to the highest level. At that level, the only messages that download to my computer are ones I've added to my ONLINE address book by logging onto my email account via web browser.
A couple of days ago 4 major spammers got busted, my incoming email dropped from 10 a day to 0.
Perhaps no-one is writing to you....enjoy. I have sent a email to all in my address book last night and only received 3 BACK . To the others I am going to ask them if they sent a message to let me know at my yahoo ADDY and see what happens . THANKS to all . Still working on it.Does your ISP provide a spam folder? Have you checked it?yes they have a spam folder , but its empty.I think you'll need to get your ISP to help with this; clearly the emails are not arriving in your mail account. The ISP should be able to check the mail logs to see what's happening - depends on how good an ISP you're using.I just sent you an email to your yahoo address roz, did you get it?
What is your ISP email address?no i didnt get it . My ISP is netins.net

I am tried now will tackle this tomorrow . ISP says there is no problem , yeah right . I may have to change email addy . thanks a million yall

Solve : Monitor.exe using 99% cpu??

Answer»

}{i EVERYBODY!

LONG time no see. Anyway, the name says it all. In windows XP (home) a process called Monitor.exe is taking up nearly all my CPU cycles. Not cool. Supposedly monitor.exe is a part of windows so I can't just kill it. I have already tried format/re-install of windows to no avail. What would be causing this and how can I fix it?

My system specs are:
Acer travelmate 2423 WXCI, XP home, 1.5ghz Celeron M, 1.2GB DDR2 RAM, 40 gig hdd, only default software installed (Acer stuff. they install auto-magically after I use the factory restore feature.) Had this problem with all windows updates and with no windows updates.

Thanks a lot! You guys are great A quick Google search does reveal that, in fact, it is a Microslavesoft process. However, according to this site:

Quote

If you are not experiencing any hardware related difficulties you should terminate this process.

If you are not using the Windows Server (a bad choice anyway), and you are not having hardware trouble, then it should be removed.

Judging by your postcount, you've been here plenty of times. I assume, then, that you are familiar with HijackThis. Run it, and remove Monitor.exe (check the box, and click "fix checked"). On the off-chance you don't have this program, Google it, and download it from Majorgeeks.com.

If removal of this item causes problems, let us know and we'll step you through restoring monitor.exe from the BACKUP that HJT makes.

An aside: I too have XP Home and I do not have monitor.exe on my system. It hasn't crashed and burned yet (except for my own monkeying around where I shouldn't).Thanks Dilbert!

I'll try your suggestion as soon as I i GET back into windows (Ah the joy of dual-booting with linux )Alright that did it. Thanks again Dilbert for restoring a functional system to me (well, at least as functional as windows gets anyway .)

Oh, just FYI in case you run across this problem again with someone else; monitor.exe actually turns out to be part of the software bundled with my Acer notebook. In this particular case it's part of the backup manager that is included with my laptop. However I don't like the way it ate 99% of my cpu cycles thank you very much. I love Acer, their a good company, but I truly wish these computer manufacturers would stop giving out these "restore" cds instead of a REAL Windows cd.Some will sell you a "real" CD for a nominal charge when you purchase (Dell). HP can get you one after the fact if you complain. The others I am not sure about.

Solve : Last Try, CD Drive!?

Answer»

My CD Drive (Made by Combo) isn't working!

The drive opens and closes, the light blinks, the DISC spins, but it doesn't recongnize any CDs! The icon in "My Computer" is just Local Disc (D: ) and TAKES me to a blank page.

I checked the cords to the MOTHERBOARD and the drive and replugged them.
I reinstalled my driver, no rollback or updates available for it.

The wierd thing is, when I put the disc in my mouse has a disc next to it, so it knows a CD is in there, but nothing happends.

If anybody can help, it would be great, if there isn't any help, I have no choice but to buy a new drive.

EDIT: My driver: COMBO IDE5232CO - "This device is working properly."
Driver Date : 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0

NOTE: The game I was trying to install worked a month back, but starting a few weeks AGO the drive stopped working.

Have you tried blowing out the drive with compressed air?

Have you tried different CD's?

Run any antivirus/ antspyware checks?

Alan <>< Per the other post and response you need a new drive. This one is FUBAR'ed.

Solve : Smart Link 56K Modem?

Answer»

I am USING WinXP SP2 (Home Edition), Mozilla 1.7.13. in my Notebook.
Recently, when I TRIED to download a file, a PROGRAM called "Smart Link 56K Modem" appeared in the Taskbar.

I had searched for this progarm with the help of "Search", but was not able to locate the directory of this program.

Anyway, I am wondering what software or any methods can LET me know the directory of this progarm locates.
Just like "Paint" can be found by this way: Progarm>Accessories>Paint.

I just can't SEE "Smart Link 56K Modem" in the Program folder, but it will open whenever I start to download a file.

Here are the print screens:

http://www.geocities.com/space4cidp/smartlink2.jpgAnd what was this "mystery download" you did not name? What modem is in your laptop? Look in Device Manager in Control Panel/System.

Solve : CD Drive Help!?

Answer»

Well, I'm pretty BAD with computers, and this thread might be in the wrong section, so sorry if it is.

But the problem is that my CD Drive isn't working properly. The light blinks and the disc spins, but when I go into "My Computer" the game icon doesn't show up, only Local Disc D, and when I click that it brings me to a blank page.

Another thing you should probably know is when I start up my computer in the SCREEN where you can enter the computer settings, the disc drive light blinks and I need to eject the disc to continue to the next loading screen, or wait a minute or two.

I tried opening my computer up and connecting the motherboard cord and the drive cord again, but no dice.

Any help will be GREATLY apprieciated, thanks! Can you play a music CD in it? Usually the optics go long before the mechanics, so it will still open/close, etc.

If the hardware has a problem, replacement is the solution. New DVD burners are as little as $30 delivered.Well I just put in some Jimi Hendrix in the drive, and still NOTHING. Maybe you should also know that when I put the disc in and go to the Local Disc icon in "My Computer" it takes a while for the blank page to show, it goes into the not responding state for a few seconds.Time to replace the drive.

And you should keep your responses with the original thread, rather than starting another series of posts for the same issue. It is less confusing to us as well as you.

Solve : Lost games?

Answer»

Might seem stupid to some, but somehow we seem to have LOST the games that came bundled with XP (Freecell, Pinball, Spider etc.) The folder is still in the menu, but is empty. I've tried the "Add/remove Windows components" THING, but all that comes BACK are the "Internet" games.
What do I have to do to get the "single player" games back into the system please? :-? Open a command prompt by going to "Start /Accesories/ Command prompt and click on it...At the prompt WINDOW type "sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD nearby as it will ask for it.

Cheers patio, tried it but it seems my system doesn't like the SP2 disc I've got. Keeps telling me its the wrong one. :-?
Maybe a "repair" WOULD do the trick, or is that a bit OTT?

Solve : download and video playback issues?

Solve : Dial Up Disconnect Problems?

Answer»

I just fixed a P2, 400Mhz, 320 Mb ram w/win 2000 pro for a friend.
I ran it for a week on my DSL with NO problems & now he took it back & he has SBS - AT&T whatever it is now dial up. He said he keeps loosing his connection ? Any suggestion to remedy this. Try different dial up numbers ?
I have it tweaked & nothing is running I even turned the virus protection off.Check the connection properties and see if it is set to auto disconnect after x minutes of inactivity. Some ISP's will also disconnect after a set period of inactivity. Someone picking up an extension phone will cause a disconnect. Call waiting will cause a disconnect if not disabeled before going on line and someone tries to call. The computer is on it's own line & no one is picking up the phone.
I hate it when I work on someones computer & then they have problems.
He has another computer & it does NOT disconnect using the same line etc.
It's a brand new 56K/V.92 Fax Modem. It has modem on hold & that is off. V.44 BLA bla I will play with some of these other settings.
Thanks for the reply.I'm not sure about that modem on hold setting...

Is this a WinModem by chance ? ?

If you can copy and paste the initialisation string here.

patio. 8-)You are talking over my head now PATIO ! LOL I assume I would do that at his house where the computer is now ?
I have HEARD MENTION of modem strings before I am just not familiar with it.

I have been on DSL so long there is NO way I could ever handle dial up again but he has no choice in his area.I ran it for a week on my DSL with NO problems

Running on DSL doesn't use the modem so you wouldn't see any problem until he hooked up to a phone line & used dial-up...but you already KNEW that

It's a brand new 56K/V.92 Fax Modem. It has modem on hold & that is off. V.44 bla bla I will play with some of these other settings.

What did you do to 'fix' it?

Solve : Losing my mind...please help?

Okay I can't get into Windows at all. I switched the boot order to the CD and put the XP disc in the CD drive. I get the prompt - press any key to boot with CD. Again, I get to the Windows Icon screen, it looks like it's loading. Then, it dissappears as usual, except nothing ELSE happens. The screen stays black and the processor keeps running.

I thought this was because my system drive was toast...what would PREVENT Windows from displaying? is it possible I can't see it for some stupid reason, like a peripheral plugged into the WRONG place or SOMETHING?

Solve : short cut key for create a new folder?

Answer»

I am USING XP SP2.

I have been googling for a combo key to make the creation of a new FOLDER easier.

We all know that "CTRL+C" equals the command Copy, and "CTRL+V" for Paste.

I was wondering if there is any combo key for "New a folder".

The technique for creating a new folder varies depending on what application you're using. For example, if I'm closing an Excel file and what to save it to a new folder, I can create that new folder right from the Excel Save As panel. Are you TALKING about WINDOWS Explorer or what? Quote

Sorry, I should be more specific that I just would like to know if there are any combo keys or shortcut keys to New a folder in Windows Explorer.
Not that I know of. You can however make your own. Use a program like AutoHotKey to create a macro to do more or less anything. It's extremely powerful - you could get it to prompt for the new folder NAME first.

Solve : RAID-5 volume repair (failed disk member)?

Answer»

I am running several web servers with Windows Advanced Server 2000. All are set up with 5 or more SCA SCSI DISKS in a RAID-5 array. When setting them up a couple of years ago, I purchased disks in lots so I would have replacements. A disk has finally failed, and I backed up the data, shut down the server, and replaced the disk. Upon RESTART, I wrote the signature and marked the disk as dynamic. However, when it's time to repair the volume, the "repair" option is not visible. "Regenerate parity" does nothing, of course. I've tried a few other identical disks, hoping that it's not just that the first new ones had a little less space than the one that failed. The disks are all from the same lot, and I purchased them for just such a situation as this. If I must always regerate the volume and restore from backup, then the only advantage to the W2K software RAID-5 seems to be that the unit stays up until I can take it OFFLINE and rebuild the thing. I also tried DISKPART, but the "repair" command listed on the MS support SITE is not available in the version I obtained.

It's been awhile since my limited training, but am I doing something stupid or just not getting it? Following the written procedures doesn't seem to be working. Is hardware RAID the only real solution to repair without a complete volume rebuild?

Would an obviously larger disk be a worthy try? The steps are pretty large in the SCSI world, so I'll waste some disk space, but if it would work, I'd be happy to do it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
I don't think the issue is size here. You are not seeing any error messages, are you? What software are you using for the array? The volume is just a fault-tolerant W2K Advanced Server striped/parity set. The volume operates fine and the other disks show as online with failed redundancy in the disk manager console. The new disk shows as online and with the same available size as the other volume members had before being added to the volume.

I know I did this a couple of years ago and as soon as the new disk was signatured and recognized as dynamic, the volume repaired with no further PROBLEMS (same lot of disks).

No error messages other than the failed redundancy. Thanks for your help.

Solve : Reformatting for Fresh Install?

Answer»

I'm trying to reformat harddrives for a fresh install of Windows XP. Currently, it is installed on both of them, and will run on my 2nd harddrive for a while after it starts, then it will switch back to the first one and STAY on it. Everytime I try to reformat both of them, it always picks the 2nd harddrive because it recognizes both of the drives as C:\. When I'm on the first harddrive, it recognizes this DRIVE as E:\, but when I go to format the C:\ drive it ends up thinking that the E:\ drive is the C:\ drive. They're not SET up in RAID either. Please HELP, thanks.I would remove the secondary HDD, use XP CD to format and install XP to the primary drive and after all is running properly re-introduce the secondary HDD and format under Disk Management...Okay, thanks. No Problem...let us know how it goes.

Solve : Cant start computer; doesnt get past bootup. HELP!?

Answer»

As of this morning when I tried to turn on my computer, I haven't been able to use it and have had to use someone else's computer (on which I am currently writing this from). This is due to the fact that when I turn on my computer (which is a Dell, with a Windows 98 operating system) it goes as far as the Windows 98 logo screen seen here: http://ecdlweb.uw.hu/w98-startup.gif, then beeps once and doesn't do anything more. The blue bar goes across the bottom of the logo screen over and over again, but an hour later that screen will still be there. The only way to get out of it is to click esc, which takes me to a garbled, pixelated glitch screen which does nothing, and also does not lead anywhere on its own. The only option at that point is to either manually shut off the computer or press ctrl alt delete to restart, where the cycle starts over again.
The only thing out of the ordinary that's happened was several brief power outages last night, due to a storm in the area. My computer is plugged into a surge protector, and after the power came back on, after restarting the surge protector, the computer turned on fine; it's just this morning that I turned it on and it won't LOAD.
I tried restarting countless times, as well as turning the computer off completely, restarting the surge protector it's plugged into, and turning it back on, but nothing has worked.
It WILL load SAFE mode, but unfortunately for some reason Safe Mode has never been able to recognize my mouse and thus I can't move my cursor at all which makes operating the computer in safe mode difficult if not impossible.
Another thing I tried was clicking F8 before it got to the Windows 98 Logo screen, then choosing Step-By-Step Confirmation from the menu. When I did this, I clicked Y (for yes) after all the steps it asked me to say yes or no for, until after clicking Y for one of them, the computer made the same beep noise and the next step it asked me about was just random garbled computer gibberish symbols, with the same yes or no question at the end of the line. When I clicked Y for that one, about 10 more LINES of gibberish appeared in rapid succession, each saying "bad command or file name" after them, with the last line being a longer line of gibberish symbols. When I clicked Y after the last one, nothing happened. When I pressed esc nothing happened. No other keys had any effect either. The only thing I could do was press ctrl alt delete, and it restarted. I tried the step-by-step confirmation again, except clicking escape on the gibberish line and the same thing happened. I tried again, clicking escape on the last regular line before the gibberish one and the gibberish one still came up, FOLLOWED by the others when either Y or esc was clicked. The last regular line before the gibberish line is:
C:\>SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI
SET SBPCI=C:\SBPCI [Enter=Y Esc=N]?
I tried restarting again, except this time choosing Command Prompt Only from the menu, and it automatically went through all the lines until it came to the 10 or so gibberish ones, ending at the same line the step-by-step confirmation ended at, and did the beep noise over and over again nonstop until I clicked ctrl alt delete and it restarted once again.
I'm really out of ideas now, but it's very important that I'm able to get onto my computer again and have it functioning, so any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help,

-AlecF8 boot / choose Command Prompt / go to the C:\Windows\Command directory / type Scanreg /restore. Choose a date from 5 registry backups.

You'll have to do this without a mouse (use the cursor keys...the arrow keys)

Alan <>< Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall with? The problem fixed itself. I'm not sure how or why, but after a few days I just turned on my computer and it loaded regularly. I've backed up all my files now and am keeping a close watch on it to see if it does it again, but so far there's no hint that it will. The only thing that's different is that Norton Anti-Virus and Microsoft Word, Excel, POWERPOINT etc. no longer worked and had to be re-installed.
Thanks for the help anyway! I've saved it and will be sure to use it in case this happens again.

Solve : 44 Gigs of data + 80 Gig Hard Drive = Full HD??

Answer»

I have only 44 gigs of data on my hard drive but windows shows it as full. Its an 80 gig harddrive. what can i do to remedy this?Consider the following:

Your recycle bin - is it empty?
Hidden system files etc - are they included?
Your paging file - that can take up a gig or two.
Have you ran chkdsk? Start > run > cmd > chkdsk/f (you'll need to restart)Windows is correct...that HDD is full...it's your Documents and Settings folder that contains 44+Gig...

I'm suprised that machine even starts up.

You have some housekeeping to do. Back up what you need....free up some space (Windows recommends at least 15% free space ) and then run diskclean and defrag....it will take awhile.

In the first screenshot your Doc/Settings folder was 44+G...
The total free space was 3+G...

Now the Doc/Settings folder is 25+G

You're missing the point.
You have some serious housekeeping to do... that HDD is almost full.

You can post as many screenshots as you like but you need to get things under control or you will continue to have problems.

p.s. the time lag of the forums is not the issue here... see my sig.the reason it said 44 gigs (as i said 2 posts ago) is because i selected all in my c: drive and then hit properties, the second screenshot is of when i only selected documents and settings. and its impossibe for my hd to be full because i just did a format/clean install and then brounght back the 25gb of my docs to my computer. so there can only be, with the few progs ive installed 40-50 gigs of data on here total, not 75.I'm going on what you posted...period.

If Windows is reporting that HDD has 3 G of free space then chances are that is what you have no matter what you might think to the contrary.

Have you been customising your swapfile by any CHANCE ? ?

I'd suggest DLoading SequoiaView from the link below which will report the real used part of that HDD...

patio. 8-)Patio, you need to be more observant, you've done this a few times.

Electric Phoenix this is indeed a very unusual problem. I've done this in my computer. C: properties say 62gig used, put right click properties on everything in C: is 53gig. I know that there is some difference between the way file size is reported (it's complicated about sector sizes if you really want an explantion I'll tell you) but I wouldn't have thought it would have been that bad. Do you have lots of small (few kb) files? They can cause this problem.

What is the size of shared documents and ADMINS documents? Please take a look in your recyle bin, you never know. On your system properties, go to performance virtual memory, what is your paging file size?

Did you try using chkdsk? Try analysing your computer with defrag and take a screenshot of the graph.

Try deleted these files you've put on it, and seeing how the size looks then.

Aside from that all I can think to do is format, retry again and HOPE for the best.is it possible that i did not format correctly and i still have all the files from before the clean install under another account name than i cannot see unless i am logged in as the admin?Try This.. Go to the C:/ Drive and right select all of the contents in that drive and right click and hit proporties and tell us how much everything is now?44.9 gb same as pic 1 top rightmaksim "........."

electric phonex try answering ALL my questions, and tell me what happens when you do my suggestions.

I'm not sure how we can do any better than NTL, I'm afraid. Particularly when then have far more information at their disposal...Try installing another browser, Like firefox you can get it here http://www.getfirefox.com and or opera which can be found here http://www.opera.comthey are both free and if the doesnt work then see if he can recieve and send packets.Maksim, if it says "Cannot find server", the ethernet card has a problem, and therefore both Firefox and Opera won't work either.

Byrnie77, couldn't you get your friend to send the PC to the geek squad? They should be able to fix that problem. On my new PC, when I tried to update Norton Internet Security, it fouled up the internet connection when it failed to install properly. The geek squad was able to fix that problem and get the internet connection working again. One thing is that it could cost your friend $100. If that's one of the few ways that it can be done, he may have to do it.Careful...

Everytime i install it and click "turn off computer and install new updates" it restarts and the same UPDATE for EVERYTHING pops up again saying that its not installed to reinstall. I tryed everything from checking for spyware to viruses but cant find ANYTHING. The update for windows thats its trying to install is:

Update for windows XP (kb920872) : "This is a reliability update for Windows XP machines. Install this audio component update to prevent memory CORRUPTION issues which may cause an unstable state on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer."

Solve : Can't Turn Off My DSL Anymore ??

For some reason I can't turn my DSL off anymore ? Any SUGGESTIONS ? I get this evertime I try & disable it.

Error Disabling Connection
It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been INITIATED by another user or the system account.

I have a custom built P4-3gig-1gig ram, 300mb h.d.Why are you going about it this way ? ?

If you want the DSL off there's a power switch on the back of the modem...

If not un-plug it.

patio. 8-)It was the easiest way to me.
Just enable & disable.
I was just curious as to what made that OPTION not work anymore ?I made a couple of batch files for my wifes machine so that all she has to do is double-click "Internet_Off" and "Internet_On". That way she doesn't have to fuss with turning off the modem, which is in my office anyway

Anyhow back to the subject, why would you want to turn off your DSL anyhow? Whats wrong with leaving it on? When turn off your comp it disconnects automatically. Unless for some other reason the setting were messed with but still thats a whole different story. Is it really that important or are just curious? Quote

That was a real good find. I'm skepical of the legitimacy of it. They're selling these CDs for $28.75. As the old saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". I don't know either.

But I did find the OEM system recovery DISK for an old Windows 98SE , HP PAVILION I have.

I know for a Compaq I still have, that has ME on it, the recovery disk isstill available for it, directly from HP/Compaq's website for about $12.00It's also possible the OEM's have sold these CD's to a RESELLER because of lack of demand...

The best way to find out would be to contact the Mothership.

PLUS its history and auto DONE typing/passwords.

stats: windows 2000 service pack 4. i really dont think you need to know the hardware. but just say so. the pc was a gift so i dont have the disk.well when you delete an account it gives you the option to save the old accounts documents and settings. so im not sure where they would be saved on 2000. the account you delete was it the only one on the computer before you deleted it?

Well, free is free.

It could be the difference of a person having a computer and not having one.

You just want to try and not create problems for yourself, and if its in good working order, do everything you can to keep it that way.

If it does crap, big deal it was free. true but you should ALWAYS ask for the cds if they have them Quote

Of course. Any Win2K CD will work on that machine if you know anyone who has one...
Since that machine came with a liscensed copy you would not be violating the EULA by doing a repair install of your OS.

Travel to the link below, print out the instructions and follow the steps for a "fast repair".

Solve : mspaint cant open jpgs, gifs.....?

Answer»

I got Windows 2000 with SP3 and MSPaint wont open jpgs or gifs. I dont get it....Paint is supposed to support jpgs in W98 and up...It does. I don't know what your problem is there.

How are you trying to open them? By starting Paint, and then going to File, Open, or by locating the photo FILES in Explorer and double clicking on them, or what? What happens when you try to open them?
I open it thru Start>Programs>Accessories...etc.

Then a box comes up saying "Paint cannot read this file, or its format is not currently supported"Can you locate those files in Explorer and verify that the filenames have the proper extension for JPG or GIF files?yes.

i click on the pictures properties and it SAYS "JPEG image" and the extension is .jpg....
Do you have a floppy jalopy drive in that computer, or a flash drive? If so, can you put one of those JPG files on it, take it to another computer, and see if Paint will open the file?already tried it. This has got to be something simple. Could it be my drivers or something? Could it be my copy of W2000?I suggest you take a look at some of this: HTTP://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=MS+Paint+error&btnG=Google+Searchill see what i can find...thanks..Do these files have "image" icons, or the default "unknown" file type icons? Try actually opening them in Internet Explorer, which I know can open those file types. From a command prompt type SFC /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Win2K CD handy...Windows will ask for it.

Otherwise you can DLoad and install Irfranview and open those pics...if this doesn't work i'm afraid your image files are corrupt. Why not have a look in the software FAQ and get yourself something better than MS Paint? Paint.NET is a good starting point. See the link in my signature.

Solve : Difficulties with some simple processes?

Answer»

Hey all

I don't really know much about this problem and I am hoping some of you may help me. I will try and explain it as BEST as I can.

I was running WinXP with SP2 and was having no problems with it and then something strange started to happen; I would be able to open some things on my computer and not other things. For example, I couldn't open even simpliest things. Like my display options through right-clicking my mouse on the desktop and going to properties. Also I couldn't Ctrl+Alt+Del and bring up a Task Manager. All that was happening was a hourglass would pop up (the icon where the hourglass is next to the pointer) and then a few seconds later it would disappear without anything happening.

So I decided to do a format and installed WinXP Pro with SP2 on it. Everything with the format went well and then the problem began happening again. Same deal.

I formatted one more time and it is still happening. The strange thing is about all 3 times though is that after about 10 minutes, everything I tried to do opens up and then for a while I can do everything normally. Then it occurs again whenever I restart my computer.

I really have no idea what it could be. I am running a PIII 733 with 256 megs of RAM. So it shouldn't be going that bad.

So do any of you have any idea what it could be. Anything you can tell me would be great. Thanks in advance.

--Colin Anderson
1) Check how much free space you have on that HDD.

2) DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive maker's site.

3) Consider another 256 stick of RAM...that machine will run much smoother.

4) Run all your cleanup/defrag tools.

5) Run all your anti-malware apps.

Good Luck and let us know.

patio. 8-)Don't forget the speed of your harddrive is important too! Thanks for the quick reply guys.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 7200 RPM 120 gig hard drive.

Also, the drive was just formatted so would I really need to run defrag or cleanup tools?

And what are some anti-malware apps, do you mean like Ad-aware and stuff?

Thanks again.Do you still get the problem in safe mode?If you right CLICK on My Computer and select Properties, what do you see under Computer on the General tab?

Is this a legitimate Microsoft Windows XP CD you're using to install Win XP?

Does Device Manager report a clean bill of health? Run dxdiag, and run the various tests. All successful? Quote

And what are some anti-malware apps, do you mean like Ad-aware and stuff?

Surely you don't mean that you are running nothing for protection.I safe mood the problem seems to not be there. Nut I haven't been in safe mood for long so it MIGHT still occur. As of right now things are working. It is just that sometimes it happens. I also downloaded the WD Dianostic Tool and here is a Log of the tests:

Thanks again for all of your help guys and gals. I appreciate it!So, this discussion is non-conclusive. Basically, all we know is that you ran the WD Diagnostic test and passed it.That's a good sign you have eliminated the HDD as a problem....you still didn't say how much free space there is.

As far as malware programs you should run:
Spybot
AdAware
Your current anti-virus program

Post back and let us know the results.

Solve : Is it possible, install newer OS to an older HP??

Answer»

A friend of mine has a older HP PAVILION with ME on it.

He is worried to death about Microsoft stopping support for it.

What kind of trouble is it to install a newer OS (Y2K probably) on a brand name computer?

I told him I would check here, because I figured someone here has tried it or accomplished it.Win2K will probably run just dandy on a PC built for ME...

I would suggest however he do a full format after backing up his data needed and do a clean install of Win2K...no sense in INHERITING any crappola.

patio. 8-)So it would work to just stick the disk in re-boot and start from scratch?

As if you were installing on a home built computer?

Have to fight it out with some of the drivers I would assume?I would go to the HP site and check the drivers for that model. Wn2000 will have some things built in, but probably not all. It's best to have the needed drivers handy on a CD to install right after the installation.

What model is it and we can help further? This is where I got mine straight from HP. I found the model # (a705w) right INSIDE the flap you take off.A sticker on the outside housing that holds the hardrives...

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

it gave me only the drivers I needed for the original hardware....What ram and CPU does this older HP beast have?

BIOS Rompaq or such could be involved in your adventure.

That would be fine IF the same operating system is being used. Different versions of Windows can use different drivers and one just MAY not work at all on the other, and may hose the system. Keep that in mind.

Unfortunately NO drivers for Win2000 are available for that model:

Others MAY work, but I would not count on it.GX1_Man, I looked at the link you gave.

That's the determining factor, look on the home site to what OS's the particular model supports?

Is it a battle with the drivers or the branded motherboard just may not let something else load?

Well he has been talking of buying a new Toshiba laptop.

thanks,There's always the option of checking on WinNT drivers which will run fine on Win2K...

I then tried to remove it the next day and up pops the install window telling me adobe photoshop is preparing your files for install. Then it installs it. Everytime I click on remove it tries to install the program, I do not get the window asking me to remove or repair. Is there a back door way to remove adobe photoshop from the computer. Solve : 2 drives to 1, format problem??

Answer»

Hi, I'm trying to move from two 20 Gb physical drives to one 80 Gb.
Specs:
System:
Intel Celeron 1300 MHz
512 Mb RAM

C: (physical)Maxtor 20 Gb Win 98 SE
D: (physical)Maxtor 15 Gb Win XP home, SP2
G: (virtual) 5 Gb Games

New drive
Seagate 7200.9 80 Gb

I tried REMOVING Drive D: And transferring the C: drive to the Seagate but no joy. Tried the other way but wouldn't boot.
Also, the computer can't see the new drive. I guess I have to format it first but don't understand how to do that if I can't see it.
I have another computer to work with if needed but if I format it on that one, won't it have the system/registry data from the computer it is formatted on rather than the one I want to install it to?

The final question is, how do I go about transferring my two physical drives to one partitioned drive.
Thank you for any help,
jimWhat do you mean by physical and virtual? A partition is either on one harddrive or the other. I'm assuming that the 5gb one is on the second 15gb one. They are both just as physical as each other. To me virtual usually means it is resident in the computer's RAM, but it is unlikely for this case.

What exactly do you want to do? It is not clear. Do you want to end up with 3 harddrives (20/20/80) 2 harddrives (20/80) or just one (80).

If you are using a SATA or RAID harddrive you might need to load some special drivers on first before you format. When Windows loads it should say press this key if you need to use special drivers, or something. Is this required? Which harddrives are set as master or slave?

Formatting a harddrive doesn't matter what computer you do it on... installing Windows does. Do not confuse those two actions...

If you don't mind losing the data on the harddrives, I suggest using Windows Setup you simply delete all your partitions and START again, it will be simpler.Do you have a legitimate Win XP home CD? If so, why not remove both old hard drives, install the new drive, put the Win XP home CD in your CD drive, then re-start the computer. If necessary, access your BIOS settings and set your CD-ROM drive as the first boot device. You should then be able to proceed with partitioning your hard drive if desired and installing Windows.

Once you get Windows installed on the new drive, you should be able to connect the old drives, one at a time, as slave; the new drive would be master. Then, you could copy the data files you want from the old drives.

Soybean,
Yes, I have the XP CD, also the win98SE CD. Your solution makes sense and, hopefully, I can do it.
My main concern was getting ALL the information from one drive to the other, some of it quite old but still necessary.
Is it possible to put three partions on the 80 Gig, install XP on one then ghost the old drives onto the other partitions and finally, remove the new XP from the first? Yeah, it's kind of convoluted but I really want to save that old info.

Neil, in answer to your note:

What do you mean by physical and virtual?
Physical (drive) is one you can hold in your hand, virtual is partitioning a physical drive. ie. drive d: is a physical 20 gigabyte drive with win xp on a 15 gig partition and games on G:, a 5 gig partition.

What exactly do you want to do? It is not clear. Do you want to end up with 3 harddrives (20/20/80) 2 harddrives (20/80) or just one (80).

how do I go about transferring my two physical drives to one partitioned drive.
nuff said.

Thanks again,
jimAh thanks for clarfying. But I still don't understand why you consider the 15gb partition physical and the 5gb virtual if they are both two partitions on the same harddrive. But that doesn't matter. It should be possible to do what you are asking but I don't know enough about that. If I were you I would follow Soybean in that you install a fresh Windows XP on the new harddrive, then put the other harddrive(s) in too as slaves. You don't need t format them and you should be able to access their data. If you don't want to keep the harddrives you could just copy the data from them onto the new harddrive then remove the old ones. Data can be transfered this way but most programs won't work like that. You might need to reinstall them. If you want to use Win98 as well as XP then tell us because you'll have to do some more stuff for that to work well. Finally, 5gb isn't big enough for games, being as most new games can take up 1gb or more space each By old info, I presume you mean data files, not program files. By data files, I mean word processing files, spreadsheet files, PHOTOS, music, etc. And, you should be able to easily copy them via the procedure I explained in my previous post.

Now, if you want to mirror your old Win XP and all your old installed programs over to the new drive, then you'll have have to use a tool like Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost. See the discussion at Can I make a backup my current Windows XP?

If choose not to mirror your old Win XP and all your old installed programs over to the new drive, then leave your new installation of Win XP installed and install all your other programs under the new Win XP installation.I'm a big fa of "Clean Install" when All else fails this makes your comp run like new...Yeh, and it can waste hours of time. It's a procedure I'd rather avoid if possible. With proper precuations, there really should be no need for a clean install in relatively short time spans, such as from one to a few months. It's been about a year since my last clean install on my main computer and my system is running just fine.Acronis True Image reduces restore time from hours to a few minutes. It depends on what your time is worth.I have some poetry and short stories - among other things - from the late eighties and early nineties that I really don't want to lose. I'm just steeling myself to accomplish the deed. Last time I tried anything like this was removing Linux Mandrake from my computer. It wasn't pretty...
Thanks for all the info and help.
jimHow many megabytes of data is this? Could it not safely be backed up to a USB pen drive?

The best solution is to back up your valuable data regularly anyway. If when that hard drive fails you will definitely be SOL. Quote
If when that hard drive fails

Know what you mean.
Have about 1.6 Gb just in poetry and short stories. I tend to get wordy SOMETIMES, keyboards bring out the verbal diarrhea in me.
I hope that it works
There are certain perks
To having a drive with no quirks.
jim That's a lot! Should fit on 2 cds, possible 1 one if you compress it.With the invention of cd/dvd burners its a good idea to save anything that is constant or unedited, To a cd...CD/DVD burners are about $30. That would be a wise investment for a LOT of reasons.

Here's one for under $30 delivered. You can get it in a few days.

Solve : set process Priority?

Answer»

Ok I use "Process Explorer" I love it... It's so much BETTER than task MAN. makes me wonder why Gates couldnt make it work so fast on killing processes... Anyway I bump up the priority of Avast since its a little taxing on my comp. my ? Is there a way to permanently set the process Priority? Or is this a bad idea alltogether...On my computer Avast seldom uses more than 2% CPU usage when running resident protection. Does increasing the priority actually make any difference to Avast? The priority determines how important it is when CPU resources are limited... it won't affect the rate at which it can ACCESS your harddrive. If harddrive speed is the bottleneck, priority won't HELP.Well it seems to me that it help maybe its all in my head... But since avast has to scan everything before opening it makes sense that it should have priority.... maybe I got it all wrong, I used a comp that wouldnt hardly run and if I set the priorities just right it ran good but if you bump up to many priorities it can lock your comp up...The point is, if you don't have any other (major) programs running at the same time, then Avast will have all the CPU resources it needs available, and so it won't matter what priority it is.Ok I understand that... I TURNED off the standard shield so it doesnt scan everytime I open a program and that helps booting alot... I like the fact I can right click and scan specific files... Good Download...
