Solve : excel function question =Left (X?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to remember how the format of this function is setup: "=left (cell,x,x) " or "=right(x,x,x)
Any help would be great, and thank you!
The function will COPY the requested # of characters from the specified side, left or right, from an adjacent cell and display them in the formulation cell
The help resources provided within Excel tend to be quite useful. Look up the function in help.I have not found the proper terminology to locate the function in helpThe proper terminology is simply right function or left function. Have you tried using the function button on the menu to find these two functions? They categorized as Text functions.I just TYPE "LEFT" in the help field and I got the result....anyway, here's a brief description of the function copied from the Help.

Syntax

LEFT(text,num_chars)

LEFTB(text,num_bytes)

Text is the text STRING that contains the characters you want to extract.

Num_chars specifies the number of characters you want LEFT to extract.

Num_chars must be greater than or equal to zero.

If num_chars is greater than the length of text, LEFT returns all of text.

If num_chars is omitted, it is assumed to be 1.

Num_bytes specifies the number of characters you want LEFTB to extract, BASED on bytes.

I just hope Linux is able to get permission to use/operate the hardware that is ID'd for single one time use.

THis is not and has never been a concern with Linux as there is no Linux Corporation.

I was just remembering Win modems and Linux conflicts.

I realize Linux "permission" open source was a big LOL towards me.

After I did a read of my post I laughed at myself about that until tears
ran down my cheeks.

Thank You for the correction GX1_Man.LOL
Hello

I had the same message on my computer, my copy of xp was supplied with the pc, after updating windows i then got a bubble saying i may be using a NON genuine copy of windows.
I followed the instructions to rid myself of this message & can you guess microsofts responce "get in touch with the pc MANUFACTURER" very helpfull [ not ].
Well anyway the message has now gone away of its own accord, but the other THING is that my display went FUNNY when the message was displayed on the front page of starting up when you input your passport a large round circle appeared & once logged in there was a green tinge around the picture ( my wallpaper ) this might just be coincidence, or???

Solve : Boot Device not recognized, Win XP.?

Answer»

Hi people, any help you can OFFER for this issue would be appreciated.
Okay, I have an asus P4P800 motherboard, XP, 2.6ghz, one 80G WD system drive and 2x200G Hard Drives, 1xCD player+1xCD burner. millenium matrox video+rme soundcard.

So, I turn on the computer, hard drive screen comes up. Doesn't go to windows, goes to a screen that says "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media...etc". So, CTRL Alt Delete, gets me into Bios Setup. And....whoa, this is different...The primary IDE Master is being recognized. (It wasn't before). The Primary IDE Slave is Not Detected. Everything else is recognized. Holy cow I just got into Windows! This board is the best!

Okay THOUGH, I'm thinking this is a definite problem waiting to happen even though I just got lucky. Is my C: Drive on the fritz, should I test it or replace it? What do you think I should do...?? Thanks! If that was the first time you turned on your computer (I'm assuming it's new?) then the BIOS probably just wasn't set up right. If the drives are not recognized correctly by the BIOS, WIndows is irrelevant.

Free DIAGNOSTICS can be download from the APPROPRIATE drive maker's site, if you think that could be an issue.Okay, something is definitely up. Got into windows (from before) computer just froze. Blue screen. "Problem detected. Kernel - Data - Inpage - Error....etc. " I hit a key, I get back into windows. The computer is about three years old, the drives are about a year old.

Based on the fact that the system disk was not recognized before (and then was, after a couple tries) I'm assuming that might be the problem. Additional info - there have been a few other times in the past month, I've heard a loud, repeating spinning sound, which must have been a hard drive, and the computer froze. I restarted and it was usually okay. Then, that dissappeared, everything' s been fine for the last month until today...

pre-emptive recommendations appreciatedSee the previous post...

Solve : Upgrading an OS Question?

Answer»

When you choose to Upgrade an OS, can you KEEP all the files on your OS? I know it's not recommended to upgrade, and you should FORMAT first, but I just installed like 50 programs on Windows 2000 and I don't feel like doing it again. Basically what I'm asking is can I just upgrade the OS and leave the programs alone?YES, you can, althougth doing a clean install ALWAYS gives the cleanest Windows installation. Here's an article worth reading: Upgrading to Windows XPUnless you have a SPECIFIC reason for needing to upgrade, I would consider just sticking with 2000

Solve : XP Pro Upgrade?

Answer»

I have XP Media Center Edition 2005 on my HP a1267c w/3800+AMD, 1GB memory, and a 200GB HD. I want to up grade the OS to XP Professional. Will doing this wipe all of the INFO off my computer as far as drivers, etc.. goes? And what steps should I take to have those loaded on a disk so I can reload them?It should not remove your data, but you may need to reinstall drivers. I've never used Media Center Edition before so wait for another to reply..I really appreciate your help, Neil. I am a bit surprised that no one else chose to respond, but it has been that way the last few times I've come here for help. I don't know what is going on. Maybe my questions are a bit to "simple" for anyone to waste time with. I have always been told told that the stupidest question is the one that is not asked.

My problem with Media Center really worries me in so far as upgrading goes. I have made back-up disks, and I believe that if I used them, they would just reinstall Media Center all over again.

Anyway...thanks again!"Although Media Center is based on Windows XP Professional, Microsoft has DISABLED its ability to join an Active Directory domain post install. This effectively precludes the use of Media Center in a corporate environment. Media Center still retains most other Windows XP Pro-specific features, such as Remote Desktop and the Encrypting File System."

Just an add-on review to Neil's Great Response.

Pros: Its XP Professional with the Media Center CABs on the extra CD. If you're slick, you'll also notice the tablet PC CABs are in there as well. THERE IS NOTHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS DISTRIBUTION OTHER THAN
THE PRESENCE OF EHHOME (media center). If your PC functions with Windows XP Professional, it will function exactly the same with Media Center.

What "upgrades" are you worried about?

Alan <>< Backup disks you made, LIKE from an HP loaded system, etc. will indeed reload MediaCenter, if that is what they were made from.

I don't believe there is an upgrade path to XP since it preceeded media center by a few years. You would then be looking at a format and full install. Quote

Solve : Installing Windows XP on an External HD??

Answer» Im a testing geek.. I like to test stuff.. I dont know if this would be possible but here is my Q!!! I have a Western Digital 120GB External Hard Drive and i was wondering if i can install Windows XP on my external harddrive.. So when i take my hard drive to work.. I can run the operating system from my external harddrive..
P.S. I WANT to know if that is possible... or is there some special SOFTWARE.. i need or something.. thanks.
Bad plan as XP is LICENSED to one computer, and the hardware on the two would not be identical.

Even if it did work, you would screw up your WGA and create a lot of heartache. It probably wouldn't work anyway.Maksim...... Have a READ ....

Solve : Sound Problems, Slow Computer... Virus??

Answer»

I hope someone can help me out here! I accidentally downloaded a codec a few weeks ago. Since then, I've had a lot of problems. First, my VOLUME quit working. Not a big deal, but I started trying to find out why. The sound icon had disappeared & my sound properties said I had no sound device.

Then, every time I'd try to open Explorer or Firefox, and some other windows, the computer would lock up. I ran Ewido, AVG, Spybot, Hijack This, and Ad-aware. My sound icon came back and the computer started working great again. However, after starting up again after a shut down, back to the bad stuff.

Here's what happens... When the computer is restarted, I lose my sound icon, Explorer & Firefox both lock up the computer, and "Multi-channel Sound Manager" is missing from the Control Panel.

My temporary fix has been to run Ad-aware. It never finds anything, but after it's done running, everything magically comes back & the computer is LIKE new again. I leave it running all WEEK, but shut down for the weekend. Monday morning, I have to start over again.

Any ideas? Let me know if you need more info.you might have downloaded the zcodec trojan..

turn off your system RESTORE and reboot in safe mode and run all of your scans.

to turn off system restore

right click the my computer icon

left click properties click the system restore tab and check the turn off box

to reboot in safe mode

RESTART computer and rapidly tap f8 until you get another menu

unlovedwarriorThanks, I'll give that a try when I have some time.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I forgot to mention that I'm running XP.report back with the results. No go. I did everything as unlovedwarrior suggested. Then I tried running Ad-aware again after the restart back to regular mode, but my sound icon never came back & IE still locks up. Firefox is working, though. Any other thoughts?have you checked your sound driver? to make sure its not corrupt??

Solve : Anoying Popups?

Answer»

This is something I've allways wonderd about when im clicking on the "are you sure you want to delete this file" or the many more irritating pop-ups from windows... I would love to see a hack that changes the "yes" "No" to "Freak Yes" and "*censored* No" since I usualy FIND myself yelling this at the computer....The confirmation popup is there in case you accidently slip on the delete key or something. In my opinion, it's a good TRADE off between time spent CONFIRMING a file delete, and time spent crying over an accidently deleted file. If it is any help, if you hold down shift when you PRESS delete it will remove the file without sending it to the recycle bin first.

Quote

or the many more irritating pop-ups from windows

Personally I have never found them irritating, nor there to be that many. Could you give us some more examples? Some types of adware will create "fake" popups designed to LOOK like "offical" Windows popups in order to trick you into buying their product... eg your registry is damaged do you wish to scan for errors? It really is quite shameful that companies will abuse the innocence of computer users in such a fasion. But provided your computer is equiped with sufficient protection it should not be a problem *ahem* *cough* *cough* Ok the delete message was not a good example and I allways use the shift key whwn I delete something its because I dont want it....I cant think of another example I'm not talking about spyware... This is just something I thought about a few years ago, not a problem now as I have more control over my temper...LOL... I think it would be funny and if some1 made it I would have to put it on my PC...Are you yelling at the monitor or the computer?

Sometimes I have to control myself, not smacking
the monitor.

I never really look down at the computer

Solve : limit privileges?

thanks.Look in user ACCOUNTS on the control panel.i have looked there nothing
Not really all that easy with XP Home. Do you have XP Pro?i do have proFab. Give them limited (normal) accounts. Find the program that you want to reduce access to (under C:\Program Files). Make SURE you've got the ridiculous Simple File Sharing switched off. Right-click on the program in question. Head for Properties-->Security. Remove read/execute access from everyone except admin users. Problem solved.there is no security tabThat'll be because you have Simple File Sharing switch on. To turn that off, fire up Windows Explorer. Tools-->Folder Options-->View. At the bottom of the Advanced Options list you'll see the option.that already switched off i switched it on and nothing i switched back off and still nothing.

I have ran Adaware, spybot, AVG virus scan, Ewido security Suite, CC cleaner and Registry Mechanic.
Nothing fixes this problem. I have no idea why it is doing this. The computer only about 2 years old.

Solve : "Ghost" SCSI/RAID dvr prevents W2K Pro "Standby"?

Answer»

In Windows 2000 Pro, Service Pack 4, an error message states “The Driver for SCSI/RAID Host Controller is preventing computer from entering standby. Close application & retry. If problem persists, UPDATE driver.” Microsoft knowledge base suggests uninstalling said driver and installing an updated driver.

My problem is that I have installed only an Ultra2 Wide Adaptec SCSI Host controller which shows up in the Device Manager along with a ghost “SCSI/RAID” controller. I say ghost because the Device Mgr. states “ No driver has been installed” for the SCSI RAID controller. Further, when I uninstall this Ghost SCSI/RAID device, it reappears immediately upon rebooting! How can I get rid of this Ghost SCSI/RAID device? :-?Disable it in your BIOS...then re-boot and REMOVE it via Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager.Patio,
Since I have no BOOTABLE SCSI drive connected to the HBA, the SCSI BIOS is automatically DISABLED and the Mainboard POST BIOS does not show any SCSI/RAID device other than the Adaptec 2940UW SCSI OEM PCI adaptor. Also, the "Ghost" SCSI/RAID Device appears/reappears in the Device Manager even after I uninstall the 2940UW, which then no longer appears in the Device Mgr (or the Main POST BIOS).

WarthogSearch that HDD for an installation of Ghost and remove it. This is a HDD DISK imaging program.

Solve : Having trouble shutting down?

Answer»

When I go to SHUT down system it just gives me the message "Windows is now shutting down" and stays like that for hours, it won't shut down anymore. I know I am not supposed to do this but I have just been pulling the plug. Help! What version of Windows? How long have you had this problem?

You can probably turn off the power by holding your power button in for 4 to 6 seconds.Sounds like an APPLICATION is hanging at shutdown.

Like Soybean asked...What operating system are you using? If XP, go the Run command (Start / Run) TYPE msconfig / go to the Startup tab and deselect everything / choose OK / reboot.

If may hang, do as Soybean suggests to shut down.

Start the computer, let it completely BOOT, then when it's finshed, reboot. If it DOESN'T hang then one of the applications that's running is causing the problem. You'll then have to go back one at a TIME and turn on each one to see who the culprit is.

Alan <>< You may want to check Power Management in your BIOS.Thanks Everyone. I will try your suggestions. I am not tech savvy at all so the help is appreciated. I have XP. It's been doing this for a while.

You MUST quote any folder paths/filenames that contain spaces. Hence:
echo off
cls
cd "c:\active worlds"
run aworld.exe
cls
cd "c:\program files\cybernet worlds"
run aworld.exeHello All,
All that does is take to the directory the bat file is in.grrrr
Any sugestions?
I think my file settings are off(folder control pannel, file types)

Hugs
JudyAs usual I'm a bit confused. Do you have a program called RUN that you are passing parameters to?

Code: [Select]echo off
cls
cd /d "c:\active worlds"
aworld.exe
cls
cd /d "c:\program files\cybernet worlds"
aworld.exe

You really don't need the quotes or the /d switch on the CD command, but somehow it balances my sense of proportion. Hello All,
All that does is take to the dos directory the bat file is in, again grrrr
Thanks anyway

Hugs All
JudyJudy, Judy, Judy,

Try removing the echo off statement and run the batch file again. Sometimes it's easier to spot a specific error with echo on.

The program aworld.exe. Is it in both c:\active worlds and c:\program files\cybernet worlds; is it in one but not the other and which one; is it in neither?

Or do you really have a program named RUN and are passing aworld.exe as a parameter?

Sorry for the poor, but tasteful Cary Grant imitation at the beginning of the post.

Hello All,

sorry no difference

cls
cd /d "c:\active worlds"
aworld.exe
cls
cd /d "c:\program files\cybernet worlds"
aworld.exe

Hugs All
JudyNeed more info. You haven't given US much to go on. When you ran the file without the echo statement, what messages did you GET?

What does aworld.exe do and why is it presumably in two directories?

Is it correct that you are running this batch file from the little black box called Command Prompt, and not the Start==>Run box or the little black box called MS-DOS Prompt

8-)

Solve : unwanted updates.....?

Answer»

Folks.....I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP SP 2. I'm set up for auto updates from Microsoft. A week ago, I inadvertantly clicked on the prompt to download "Windows Office Service Pack 2." I don't use MS Office. However, everytime I boot up the computer, this update wants to install. How do I remove the "uninstalled" update? Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
Click start, run, msconfig. On startup is a list of all THINGS told to load when Windows does. Look for it in there and untick it. When you next restart you'll get a box saying some of your startup options have been disabled... just tell it not to bother you again and (hopefully) problem solved.Hi Neil....Thanks for that response. I can't find anything in the MSCONFIG "start up" menu that looks like MS updates. The only indication I have is a thing that looks like a small YELLOW lock in the taskbar. When I move the cursor over it, the message is "updates are ready for your computer, click here to install the updates." When I go ahead and play the game, ie, click to install the updates, I get a prompt to insert the MS Office DISC in the CDROM. But I don't have the disc....and I don't have MS Office.Does the update APPEAR in your 'Add/Remove Programs'?
You may be able to remove it from there. cloudrest...... Thats really odd that that update is trying to install....... are you certain that you DONT have ........ Outlook , Word , excel , Power point , Access or possibly front page installed ? There must be some referance to one or more of those applications on your machine or when your machine is scanned for updates Office wouldn't show up and you wouldnt be getting that.

dl65 You could try disabling automatic updates. If you do that then you must regularly check manually for updates to keep protected.Just let it install itself and be done with it...it won't hurt anything.

Solve : Hyperlink not working properly?

Answer»

I have a web-based presentation with hyperlinks to files on my PC such as ppt, mov, exe, etc.
Previously, as I click on the hyperlinks, it will just open the target files as it should be.
When I come back to the presentation recently after leaving it aside for some time, the hyperlinks are not working properly anymore - it will prompt me to save the target files.

Example 1: when I click on a link to a ppt file, a window pop up prompts me to "Enter name of file to save to.." and it'll just save the file and not open it.

Example 2: when I click on a link to a exe file, it prompts me whether to open the file or save it like when we download something, but in this case, only the save option is active.

Example 3: when I click on a link to a html file in a powerpoint, a dialogue read "Some hyperlinks may contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this hyperlink is from a trustworthy source. Do you want to open this hyperlink?"

I guess there are some setting problems for hyperlinks?
I don't remember changing any setting recently.

Thanks for any help. Sounds like this is a security change made by a recent Windows update. You may wish to leave things as there are, or remove the recent Windows updates.I didn't have any Windows Update installed recently.
I THINK more likely it's the problem with the browser, just don't know which setting it is about.
I'm on Win XP SP2 Firefox 1.5.0.6I've just tried and it works fine with IE.
So it's the problem with Firefox. Can you give a link to the page in question so that we can TEST and diagnose?

Why do people never give LINKS to the pages that they're having problems with?Very good Egghead. LOL! Quote

Incidentally, no offence intended. Generally, we get a lot of posts from people having problems with their WEBSITES, and they so rarely provide links to the websites until asked. I guess sometimes it's because they think we're going to criticise them? Which doesn't happen unless people specifically ask for criticism. So my "under the breath" comment wasn't directed at you specifically.I suspect there may have been a deleted post in there Rob, perhaps Michael will enlighten us.I posted twice in a row.If his dummy spit was aimed at you then he doesn't 'know' you.

Solve : Desktop background/deleted photo help!!?

Answer»

I have tried to edit a photo and when i saved it the editing program crashed and my original photo is now ruined. However, it is still ok on my desktop background. Is there any way to save the desktop background as a photo because if there is then I will be able to have my original photo BACK. Or is there any way to retrieve the original photo from before the editing process? Any help would be fab! Thanks, julie xxx p.s. i have attached the photo so that you can see what happened. You will find it in the WinNT folder...

Or Windows folder depending on which VER. you are running.Im running windows xp. have been through most of the SYSTEM 32 folder with no luck so far. couldnt fine the winNT folder. any ideas?
You can try USING print screen. Everything, including icons, will be in the capture. You can then paste it into photo editing software and edit it. If there are no icons on the desktops, only the image will be captured.Try searching your system for a file called "Internet Wallpaper" or something like that. Failing that, search for all .jpgs, .GIFS and .bmps on your system - particularly under the C:\Windows folder.

Solve : Error 163 and 173?

Answer»

I have an IBM 600e laptop with Windows 98. Yesterday I installed a new battery. Today when I turned on my computer it came up a little symbol of a lock. I hit enter and it comes up with two errors, 163 and 173. It won't go past these errors. Any idea of what is causing these errors and how can I overcome them. Any help would be much APPRECIATED. Thanks.Just an additional note on this PROBLEM. When I get the lock symbol on start up, it looks like it wants a password. It allows me to type up to 23 characters and then when I hit enter, an "X" appears next to the lock. It allows me to try again and then another "X" appears next to the lock UPON failure. If I try a third time and fail, a hand appears with a diagnal line through it. It then won't allow me any further unless I turn off the computer and start over.

Solve : Swap file on flash drive??

Answer»

I've heard that putting the Windows XP swap file on a separate partition, on a separate hard drive, can improve performance.

So here's an IDEA: How about getting a 1-gig flash drive, plugging it into the back of the PC, and putting the swap file on that? I'm thinking that a flash drive would be faster than a hard drive.

What do you folks think? Is this a good idea, or a bad one?How would the flash drive be connected? By USB?A flash drive would not be faster than a BIG powerful hard drive. Thanks for the replies. Yes, the flash drive would be connected by USB. I'd plug it into the back of the PC and leave it there forever.

I'm a bit SURPRISED to hear that a flash drive wouldn't be faster than a hard drive. I've never tested it one way or the other, but it just seems that since a flash drive has no moving parts, it would have to be faster. But again, I'm just taking a guess about this.

This was just an idea, and I'm probably going to forget about it. I'm thinking that if it offered any real gains, someone else would have thought of it by now, and there would be some MENTION of it on various websites. The fact that I couldn't find anything written about it, and the fact that no one here chimed in to say "Hey, great idea," makes me think that it doesn't have a lot of potential. Thanks for helping me think it through.
Ive seen it done, but I am a pessimist not an optimist...... what happens if the thumb drive dies??
what happens if it gets bent....not something Id like to encounter..but Im sure youd make a backup of the file somewhere... Quote

A re-boot to Safe-Mode and resetting the location of the swap file would cure this...
But i think GX is correct...the transfer speeds on a newer HDD would still be faster.

patio. 8-)I don't think information can travel very faster over USB. Quote

You need to understand the term "bottleneck". No matter how fast the drive can produce the information, it cannot be transferred to the computer faster than the USB 2 connection allows. A connection from a hard drive to a motherboard is bound to be faster.Well I have a few thumb drives and a usb hdd. I think the SLOWNESS has more to do with the thumbdrives. they a terribly slow in comparrison to a usb pocket hdd I have, it is quite fast almost as fast as the internal hdd. does the swapfile have to be on a seperate partition? can it be a logical partition? And let's not forget that flash drives don't last "forever", like a harddisk. They have a certain number of writes... After that... God have mercy

Solve : XP Home question?

Answer»

I bought a new version of XP Home off of eBay, and when I received it, I noticed in small print on one side it says:

Licensed for distribution only to specific countries within Middle East and Africa.

It appears to be the same as any "American" version I've seen. It's in English and all. Is there any difference, or should I ask for a refund or what?

I don't want to open it until I'm sure I'm going to keep it.

I don't think it will be in a different language as everything on the cover is in English. I just don't want to install it and it isn't setup for my "American" keyboard or something. When I was in Mexico, their keyboards were setup completely different except for the letters. I have no idea what issues could be underlying, that's why I'm asking though.

Opinions?IMHO, anything you buy off of Ebay or any other of those places should come with the slogan..."caviat emptor"... or "buyer beware". Just because the printing is in English doesn't necessarily guarantee that the product will be.

I don't know how much you paid for the "new" disk, but my advice is..."caviat emptor". Better to pay a little more for something you KNOW is legit than to take a chance on something that is a maybe.

Alan <>< If possible I suggest you give it back for a refund and by a proper and legal disk. Better safe than sorry.

Advice: never, ever buy anything important off ebay. Quote

The seller has had over 2,600 transactions without a single person leaving negative feedback. That eliminates the buyer beware imo.

I still haven't even opened the disc, just asking opinions. With feedback like that, I'm sure it's just fine, but again, just asking opinions.

Here's the auction if you're curious:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&item=180021552968&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1Response from seller:

Hello!

The product you received it 100% GENUINE and legal to use in the USA. It is the Full OEM version and is identical to all the retail versions you could purchase on the shelves at stores like Best Buy. We purchased this product in bulk directly from Microsoft and sometimes they send us things that may be labeled slightly different (like distribution only to certain countries). Microsoft sells these to us when they have a surplus of this product and they have fully authorized the use of these in the USA. Everything is in english and you still can DOWNLOAD all the updates directly through Microsoft (there is no difference).
Please feel safe in knowing that both Microsoft & ZTech back your product.

Feel free to email us if you have any other questions at all!

-ZTechSoftware

Well, here goes nothing! Wish me luck. I'll post back with results in a couple days. On the other hand this is $100 less than the apparently identical item shown here:

And this price you got it for is very similar to newegg.com which is guaranteed to be legal.

Solve : Can't play [s].mov[/s] media files?

Answer»

Whenever I try to play a .mov file, my PC locks up. I've tried Quicktime, Real, Media Player Classic, and WMP with a codec to play .mov files. No matter what, it locks up. Thinking that it was the file's size that caused it, I found one that was 4 MB. It locked up. No matter how small, it just locks up. All other media TYPES play normally.

WinXP SP2.

Corrections: Only music plays normally. ANYTHING with video causes... not a lock-up, but 100% CPU usage. Task manager says only 3-4 CPU cycles, and only about 9k memory USED, but it gets slow and my computer monitor flickers to black and back. It keeps doing this until I close the program (a feat) or reset.

I just recently scanned for VIRUSES with AVG, A2, SPYBOT, and Ad-Aware.Video drivers updated?

Delay time between a click and a response was an outrageous 15 seconds.

EDIT: Counting all the flickers, it took me a full 3 minutes to get from that screen to the point where FF was closed.Fixed it myself. Installed older video driver.

Solve : strangeness with AOL?

Answer»

Hi Folks....I have Windows XP SP2 in a Dell laptop. I use SBC for DSL. Although I normally access the Web with either IE or Netscape, I recently installed AOL 9.0 in order to access the computer network of my employer. Now, I'm finding that when I DO use AOL, I can no longer reach the Web with IE or Netscape. After I run "system restore," to a previous date, everything is fine....until such time as I use AOL again. Incidently, it is not the act of actually going into the company computer with AOL that triggers the problem, but just the act of bringing up the AOL browser and logging on. I have a feeling that there is something about logging on to AOL that is making a change in the registry. Am I on the right track? Thanks for any help! What happens when you try to start those browsers? What do they say?Why do you have to use "AOL 9.0 in order to access the computer network of my employer"?

I think what you're experiencing is exactly why I WOULD never use AOL. They try to take control of your computer and force you to see the Internet through their eyes.
Hi Neil and Soybean...Thanks for your responses. Neil, the error message is "www.yahoo.com not found. Please check name and try again." (this would be the same message I'd get if the DSL was down) Soybean, I agree with you about AOL, but it's not in my HANDS. The company has a contract with AOL to make home access of corporate computers possible. I've had other issues with AOL in the past and have long since stopped using them for anything other than this. This might be worth a try. Download CCleaner and use it. Be sure to include the Issues scan in your cleanup; that's the part that does some Registry cleaning.I'd suggest getting RID of AOL right now to get your machine back to normal. Make sure everything works including a few re-boots...when you're done with that create a new user and install the AOL garbage to that profile and use it to access work.

pastio. 8-)Soybean and Patio.....Thanks for the tips. I downloaded "ccleaner" and ran it with minimal bad news. (I've been using a combo of spybot and adoware) I also uninstalled and reinstalled AOL using a new user name. So far so good. Thanks for the suggestions. Does this mean the problem is fixed or not?AOL version 9.0 <<< has got to be the worst software for an ISP ever!
It is supposed to be loaded with malware and mis-direct stuff and I would never use their products again. I Quit their service Jan 2006, they are still trying to collect $$ from me. I would surf in a 1"X1" pixel window on the bottom of my screen and watch advertising all day long rather than use AOL ever again!
Yes, I am bitter* Neil....I thought it was fixed, as it worked for company login twice. Now, it's exhibiting the same symptoms as the first post. So, I've uninstalled AOL 9.0 (again!) and wil try installing AOL 7.0, which I have on an old disc. I used to use ver 7, and had no problems. I'll let you know. My God!!!The title of the post........"strangeness with AOL"self explanatory.

Those people were first before they were last.LOL!

Please forgive me cloudrest.I'm not laughing at you, laughing with you.version 7.0 is about the only half decent ONE they had before all the patriot act & NSC stuff was added to their database, i'm being kooky here but just wait and see how many times they try to keep downloading add-ons to version 7 when u try to log off each time! The "you will not receive any additional charges during this download" will drive u insane.

Solve : Dual booting programs..?

Answer»

Dual booting WIN 98se and XP Home - file system Fat32 only.

Query is about installing application programs. I appreciate that I must (or I think I must) INSTALL an application twice, once in each OS, but having done that can I delete one version of the program and create a shortcut on both desktops which points to the same version of the program stored on a non-OS partition :-?

To make it a bit clearer, Win 98 on C:, XP Home on D:, just one copy of the application stored on E:, both shortcuts point to the program on E: - FULL path\folder\filename info in the program, i.e. not using environment variables.

Thanks
I know I've seen this question somewhere in a forum or forums but I can't recall the details. However, I'm fairly sure this is not a good idea, and that it can cause problems. So, I believe you need to stick to the general principle of installing programs under each OS and leaving them installed that WAY. Bear in mind that most programs makes changes to Windows Registry when installed and that both OS have their own Registry. well I accidently put xp on the same partition as ME screwd it all up but booted XP I found some programs worked just even though they wernt installed to XP and some did not... I think there is many programs that dont need the install. I USE many portable programs and some that I instal copy the files and uninstall. Some work some dont. Try to start the programs off your non OS and see witch one work. I think you would need to install the other and leave them installed if you cant allready run them from the other drive...

Solve : XP Service pack 2 and my display!?

Answer»

Hello

I am currently using a Dell Dimension 2300. Recently we had a problem and reloaded windows xp with the original cd. Once we had DONE this it needed updating to service pack 2. I updated it via the microsoft website and once complete had problems with the display. it looked similar to safe mode however upon restarting it still stayed in this mode. The display was 4 bit colour and i COULDNT change the resolution. Everything like the internet and all other programs were still working fine just all a strange colour. I have now uninstalled service pack TWO and the normal colours are back again.

However i still cant change the screen resolution from 16 bit 640x480 pixels. All the icons are very large!

Does anybody have any ideas. Any advice much appreciated! You need to install graphics card drivers. If your computer came with a driver disk put that in. The problem i have is that the monitor isnt a dell monitor anymore. its a MAG INNOVISION Monitor. I tried downloading the software from their internet sight but it wont load. In the control panel, display, settings.advanced, monitor tab i cant change anything either. Can i download any graphics card or do i have to download the one that goes with the monitor. I am very sorry i but i ont understand too much when it comes to computers. I have seen the downloads page on the Dell website. What is the item called that i should download?

Many thanks for your helpSorry Street1 i didnt see you link. i wil try that first and then come back if its still not working. thank you and kind regardsMost monitors don't even need drivers installed....it is the video drivers you want to concentrate on.

Solve : question on an OS (ME vs. XP ?)?

Answer»

I am building a new AMD 64 3500+ system with an A8N-VM CSM mobo for my son.
In 2001 I bought the complete Wndws ME operating system which I have never used. Should I use my ME os or go ahead and buy the Wndws XP home and INSTALL that instead ? Would it be cheaper to upgrade to the XP after the Me install?
It will have a WD-250GB HD which has plenty o -space? What would U- do ?
Thanks*WELL I know that with the 98 upgrade to XP disk you don't actually need to install 98 first... you just put in the upgrade disk and somewhere along the line it will simply ask you to insert a 98 disk to verify. I assume it's the same with ME. But I wouldn't recommend actually installing ME first and upgrading (messier than a fresh install). But in this day and age, you need XP. I don't think some of the newest games will even work in ME.Your probably right Neil, gonna hang a bit and see what others think.
Man, what a waste of 200.00 back then in 2001. They marketed this thing as God's gift to the human race! More like God's gift of $$$$$ to Bill Gates to give to Aids research in Africa~At least something about Windows has helped someone somewhere.lol yea.. i dod an me to xp upgrade on my moms computer or her old one... i did a reformat and reinstall of me then just upgrade it seems to work ok, but since its a windows product it might be best to buy a new xp home os just to save the risk of corruption thats famous with windows.. and like neil said most of the newer games dont use me, some might but its not recommended...

thats my advice..

unlovedwarriorI'm 99% certain you don't actually need to install ME on at any time... you can just format (NTFS if you like), install XP from the upgrade disk, and at some point you will be asked to insert a Windows ME disk in to verify you own one. This Microsoft reference confirms that Windows ME qualifies for installation of the Windows XP Home upgrade package: Upgrading from Previous Versions of Windows to Windows XP Home Edition. And, surely the Windows XP Home upgrade can be installed without actually installing Win ME first; just put the Win ME CD in the drive when prompted, to verify that you are entitled to use the upgrade version of Win XP.

Buying the upgrade version instead of the full version will save you some money.Fast.. but not fast enough im sure you can i never did it that way. it might just be safer to buy xp home full.. and im sure he can sell me on ebay..The upgrade disk is the same as a "full" disk... it's just cheaper, but needs you to have an older Windows EITHER installed or a CD for.oh kool...It definitely will work. The procedure is explained here: How to install or upgrade to Windows XP.

I agree he could buy the full edition of Win XP and sell Win ME on ebay. However, if he's never sold on ebay, I think he might rather avoid the hassle, and it is a hassle if you've never done it before.very true it was just a suggestion it would be easier to have the full version and not worry about having to have the older cd to reinstall if something goes wrong..The definitive answer is you do NOT need to install the older operating system. Just have the CD handy.

Solve : Adding Networks in Windows XP SP2.?

Answer» Hi Guys my friend has a problem with his network.. HE bought a router and he set all of the wireless laptops to CONNECT to the wireless router and share files between laptops, I told him that this might not be possible.. Everytime he restarts the laptops the laptops loose the connection.. so he has to everytime setup a network..
So i told him to create a Ad-Hoc Network, He WENT to Wireless Connection and he wants to add a network.. when he entered the SSID and he wants to make this connection between computer to computer network, so he entered the SSID and the option to make this a Ad-Hoc network the option is disabled. it is shaded gray he cant click on it..
Why do you he want an ad hoc network? What is the rationale that this will fix the solution?

What hardware is involved?"HE bought a router and he set all of the wireless laptops to connect to the wireless router and share files between laptops, I told him that this might not be possible".

Why would it not be possible, I wonder? :-?

Like GX1_Man asks, you don't tell about the hardware being used. You also don't tell us how many laptops there are / HOW did he initally set up the system / WHERE the router lives / what software your wireless system are using.

A lot more info would be helpful

Alan <>< Well then why everytime he restarts the laptops the network dissappears.. he has a Lynksys Router.. ok mayube i was wrong that he can do that.. but then how can he With the router came instructions. Did he read them?

Again:
"You also don't tell us how many laptops there are / HOW did he initally set up the system / WHERE the router lives / what software your wireless system are using."

Alan <>< Sorry ale52 i did not make my initial post descritptive.
He has three laptops, and he read the router instructions, He enabled the router to be a wireless access point to the laptops, and he did not HOOK any internet to the router, so to say it simple the router is in the living room with only the power supply hooked up to it, and he shares the files between with the router, so if he wanted to share my documents FOLDER for example, he would right click on my documents and he would select Sharing and Security, he enabled it to share, and the other two laptops can see the folder but when he restarts the laptop the other two laptops can not see the folder, so he has to disable and enable the my documents folder again and then the other two laptops can see the folder, but why is that happeing..
Router Lives in the Living room
Software used: Not Sure but he has the latest Lynksys FIRMWARE Updated./

Solve : Windows ME mouse/ display settings problems?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I am having a problem with Win ME. My mouse does not work except in SAFE mode. My keyboard works fine except for the two [WINDOWS] buttons. Also, my display settings are so large, I cannot see my whole display properties window. I tried to change the settings and I am ALLOWED to change them, then I am prompted to restart, but after I restart, the settings are the same. What's up with that? :-?

I have Windows 2000 ME 4.90.3000
Celeron processor
In System Properties it says the keyboard and the mouse is HID- compliant, and the mouse is a Microsoft USB Intellimouse.
I have a Gateway computer, I am not sure what model. It is one that lays down long ways.
The mouse and keyboard are USB. The mouse connects on the keyboard.

QuintinFirst, is it Windows 2000 or Windows ME? You can't have both unless you're set up for dual-boot.

Second, have you tried putting the mouse directly into a USB connector on the computer and NOT the keyboard?

Third, have you tried a different keyboard?

Fourth, you don't say if you can boot into normal mode. :-?

Fifth, you don't say when this all started happening? Hardware change / software update / program added?

Alan <>< Sorry...

It has ME.

I have tried the mouse in every port and get the same results. I have also tried other peripherals in all of the PORTS and they all work.

I can boot into normal mode. Everything on the pc seems to work as if there are no problems. I can navigate with the keyboard. The only things that are not working are the mouse, the windows keys, and the display settings. But, they don't appear to have problems. In Hardware MANAGER, they are all working and have no issues.

I don't have another USB keyboard to try.

This all started happening when a niece used the pc. Suddenly, there was a new DESKTOP background and these problems.

AHAAA Buy a PS2 keyboard and mouse combo for about 20 bucks...does this make a difference ? ?She changed something and is pleading the 5th at this time. I can't figure out what combination of things she changed!?!

QuintinLet me get back in a few days to see if that works.

QuintinIn the meantime here are a few other things you can try...
For the display: un-install and re-install the video drivers...

For the mouse: Re-install the mouse drivers ( an un-install is unneccessary here )

For the keyboard: Go to control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and find the keyboard. Right clik and select remove. You will get a warning...ignore it. Upon re-boot Windows will automatically re-install the keyboard for you...

Solve : start up trouble?

Answer»

I'm such a computer idiot. I'm proud I got to this forum so be gentle. I recently downloaded or tied to download norton security and antivirus package. The first one went fine the second one said the norton goback couldn't load because of my partition. I went ahead and TRIED to download it without goback? it would never install. Then the charter guy came to burry our cable and my husband turned the computer off. Now when you turn on the computer nothing works on our desk top except the internet. That seems weird but what do I know. When i use the start button to try and acces say the control panel, i get a message that says windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?!?? I don't know what to do. Can anyone help me in a slow and easily understood fashion??Hi,

I just reply because I didn't see anyone reply to you. To be able to help you, some question needs to be cleared up a bit, when you say you can't get anything working except the internet, do you mean only the Internet Explore is working? When you start up the computer, do you see any error messages or codes? What OS do you use? ie Windows2000, WindowsXP? What computer make is it? Try to be a bit more specific and give more information otherwise people can't help you.

MacPCUninstall Norton everything and never go back to it. If you've spent your dollars on it book it down to experience.

For anti-virus use AVG (Free) for firewall use Zone-Alarm (Free).

You can tell that all my experiences with Norton have not been good ones.

When you say that nothing "works" on your desktop do you mean the icons have gone or that the shortcuts don't work :-?

I have Experienced this Problem , with a Computer that had Norton.. I'm not sure if it was Norton or not, but i could not do any thing for the Computer as it would not let me Execute any Programs

i had to Reinstall the System

If you still have the Windows Disk, Reinstall the the computer but don't format it if you want to save any Data,

if you don't need to save data Do Format it.

If you need help installing windows Post backI think we have XP. I can't tell because I can't get to hte control panel. There are no error messages when I start the computer. The desktop is there but the icons aren't completed, they are the broken picture thing. If I click on an ICON from the desktop nothing happens except I'm able to use netscape. My computer is an hp pavilion mx70. I'm still looking to see if I have the disks to reintall Windows.Let us know...I do not have my disks. What now? Why is this happening? Is it because of the norton?Contact HP on how to restore that system or find out if they will SELL you an XP CD...

However before you do that you might want to put that HDD into another machine as a slave and backup all info you need. Because when you do restore that machine to Day one you will lose all the data on that machine.

Another option ( if you are legit ) would be to borrow a friends XP CD and do a repair install...

Solve : Windows XP ... can't boot with new Motherboard..?

Answer»

My motherboard on my HP 510N fried and I NEEDED to replace it. I couldn't get the EXACT same MB without waiting a significant amount of time, so I got a refurbished HP d530 in the hopes the chipsets would be similar enough ... no such luck.

The new machine came with XP Pro installed, while my old drive has XP Home on it. I have setup the new machine with the new drive as a master and the old drive as a slave. I have downloaded the chipset drivers for the motherboard for the HP d530 and my question is, since I can't boot off of the old drive, is there a way for me to update the Chipset drivers on that drive so thatI can boot from it? I'd hate to have to re-install all of my software --- which is a considerable amount.

Thanks,
Dave Just to comment, I know that no-one has an answer to this question ... as I found from HP it is basically impossible. HP Tattoos the motherboard, and during the OS Install some registry setting is created so that you can't port the HD over to another machine. I'm sure that they have a way to resolve it - but they weren't forthcoming.

Does anyone else here think that Tattooing a motherboard so that you can't use the HD to boot another machine is totally unacceptable? When I buy that machine, isn't the machine and all of its contents mine to do with as I choose (within the realm of legal uses of course)?

Yes that isn't fair, but it's life I'm afraid. The only thing I can suggest is reinstalling windows on your old harddrive set as a master.Just let me get this straight:
You have a pc with the old HDD in as slave
You put a new HDD in as master now it won't boot?

Your motherboard should boot the pc at least to bios screen with or without chipset drivers.
Chipset drivers only get used once windows begins to start, nothing to do with bios booting.

As far as HP saying thier mobo will only start from a specific HDD i think that's a load of rubbish.
If thats what they TOLD you I think they are lying.
How would you ever possibly replace a dead HDD?
Or have i got your situation wrong?

When you boot you should get est on the screen from your bios then probably a no system disk error.
Is this what's happening?
if not, exactly what error message are you getting?

OK I just re-read your post , you want to boot from you old drive on a new mobo.......
Try booting from old drive as master but start in safe mode, (press f8 repeatedly while booting) this will prevent most drivers from loading and might get you to your old desktop.

Failing that you might have to do a repair install on your old hdd under xp home, this will wipe a lot of your info and maybe my docs FOLDERS etc but it should leave you old programs intact, (with a BIT of luck).
But if you have no ogther choice there's not a lot you can do.

Can't you boot from the new hdd then access your programs, data etc??With a little preparation this would have been relatively painless but the horse is out of the barn now...
I would do a clean install of XP to the new HDD, use the Files and Settings wiz to set up the new HDD and then run your apps off of the slave (old XP ) drive.
A pain for sure but it will work.

Solve : STICKY MOUSE AND CHATTER NOISE?

Answer»

STICKY MOUSE AND CHATTER NOISE: I'm using WINDOWS ME, AMD Athlon(TM)Processor, 512.OMB RAM. While playing on-line poker after about a hour or so my mouse starts stopping and going and the cards they are dealing stop and go and this goes on for a while then all of a sudden a loud chattery noise comes over the speakers like something plugged into a wrong socket. Not long after that the screen goes black and I am logged out of the game and then the screen turns blue with a press any button to continue error, and when I do that the same blue screen error comes up repeatedly so I have to shut the machine down. After rebooting everything is fine as usual and I go BACK to the poker game and play for about a hour and the same thing happens. I have no problems with that particular poker game on my other pc. I'm stymied, has anybody had the same problem, and if so, what is the answer to fixing it?There should be a cryptic error code (with several letters and numbers). When you get the blue screen again, write the error code down and let us know what it is.

Well, I found a way to avoid it happening, so the blue screen doesn't come up anymore. I know it hasn't solved the problem, but I found out if I play my music player in the backgound while on the poker game the problem doesn't arise. If and when it does happen again I'll write down the code and let you know. Thanks. JimWell, the blue screen came up tonight and the code is OE:0028:C0030AEC. Did a quick check on your error message the the majority of RESPONSES suggest a MEMORY problem. Go here:

Solve : Floppy Boot Failure (With screenshots)?

Answer»

Yesterday I tested and bought a Windows 98 Pentium 1 (older than dirt!) from the thrift store (for $1.98, who could pass? ) and when I brought it home, I noticed that the serial mouse port was loose. so I opened it up, fixed it, started it back up again, and wouldnt do anything! The hard drive whirred like normal but there was no display on the SCREEN. So after numerous clicks of the power button, I used the Reset button and it finally came on. This is the sequence of screens I get-

(First. The normal boot up screen)

(Next, the Warmup screen)

(It then goes back to the boot up screen, then afterwards, it tallies up the memory on this screen)

(It will then go to this screen)

(I press enter, it goes here)

(It will the progress to this screen after pressing A)

After pressing any key, it will revert back to the first boot failure screen. If I enter system setup at the Mr Bios screens and turn off the FLOPPY drive, or unplug the floppy all together, it will go to this screen instead of the boot failure screen-

After that screen, it will lock up. I am stumped. I ALSO tried putting a functional floppy drive in it, and that was no good. Did I fry something when I repeatedly turned it on and off? Anybody got any ideas to fix this? Any help is appreciated.Probably nothing wrong quite yet...
That machine brings back memories !
Travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a few bootdisks. Create the floppies and try again.
If it in fact has a HDD in it it was probably wiped clean before being sold so you will need to install an OS on there.
Win98SE will do fine or Win2K

patio. 8-)It does have Windows 98 on there, as it used to boot up to Windows before I fixed the serial port. How did you fix the serial port ? ?

If it was booting and now isn't it is not detecting the drive with Win98 on it....
Check in the BIOS to see if the drive is showing up

Hit Escape repeatedly on startup to get there.
Don't change any settings til you know more about them.Somehow, whoever owned it previously managed to get one of the female ends of the 2 locking screws rattling inside the computer, letting the port wobble around. It was just a matter of sticking it back where it was supposed to be and screwing it back in.

But anyways, what I decided to do was to swap HDDs with another working junker computer (I have about 11 computers) just to see what was on it. Im just going to restore the HDD, strip the failure computer for any usable/salvageable parts and rebuild it completely. Thanks for all your help patio! If your INTERESTED in any parts, let me know and Ill see if I can hook ya up.

Solve : How to downgrade Windows media player 10?

Answer»

:-/My computer initially comes with a WMP 10, how do i downgrade it to windows media player 9 cause i hate the WMP 10. Take a look in your Add or Remove Programs panel. If WMP 10 is there, and it should be, then remove it. That should take you back to the previous version. If it takes you back to pre-WMP 9, then you'll have to download and install WMP 9.No, it's not in the add or remove programs, and everytime i try to install wm9; it will say that i already have an newer version of it. Therefore it won't let me install the older version of it. This from another forum...

"In the Add/Remove Programs screen, click on Show
Updates.

Then WMP10 will show .. you can roll back
to v9"

Might not work but worth a try.

Good luckAnd if not, then it's TIME to format and reinstall. Repair install maybe, but format :-?:car: Thanks everyon, especially dusty for the rollback theory. I am back to WMP 9 8-)

Solve : LOST uploaded images?

Answer»

HI.
ANY advice would be much appreciated. Yesterday, I downloaded all my JPEG files from my camera to my laptop. I had looked at all the photos and even made some adjustments (rotated some pics)... and then formatted my camera memory chip to take more pics.
THis morning when i tried to look at them i can't find them ANYWHERE. I searched for the folder name and even checked the trash/recycyle bin- no where to be found? THESE ARE WEDDING PICTURES!!!!!
Does anyone know where i can find them? What happened?
A NOTE- i did remember my computer not turning off properly last night- it took me several times to shut off but that was it.
thanks
natalianmrod9....... I'm confused , Your title is called " LOST uploaded images" .........
If you go to the site that you uploaded the images to .....then they should be there .

On the off-chance that you don't understand the differance ...between uploading and downloading ....... open your laptop and go to the file that you would normally download the images from your camera to your laptop. Thats where you should find them .

What do you mean , your machine wouldn't shut down properly ? Is this something that occurs on a regular BASIS ?

Let us know

dl65 dl65, he didn't put them on a website, he meant he transfered them to his laptop.

nmrod9, on the start menu, look in the my recent documents list. Then try click run, then click browse. On the Window that appears, click on the look in menu, and select my recent documents. Can you find it in there? You were exactly correct Neil. I downloaded from my camera to my laptop- saved them under a file in "my pictures"... and even edited some of my pictures.
Later that night, i had tried to shutdown my computer and it was not shutting down- it froze in the "shutting down prompt". So i held down the power button and it finally shut off...

What i dont understand is that they were saved... how can they just disappear? I made a point to be sure they were in their own folder/saved as i did not want to confuse them with other photos.

I did what you suggested Neil, and i could not find them in my recent documents. Is there any hope at all?Make sure you look in both lists as they are different. Otherwise I cannot think of much else. Maybe one of the others can.Try this
http://www.executive.com/undelete/undelete.aspnmrod9....... Was the last thing you were doing just prior having problems shutting down ....working on the wedding piscs ? If it was,its possible that the save process haven't finished or had hung.....and when you forced shutdown , the file which was being saved, was lost . You didnt mention if there was a shortcut to them in your recent docs.......

dl65

YUP! I was looking at the pics... and actually, what i meant by editing them is that i was ROTATING the pics that needed rotation, it is a standard procedure that i do directly from the "WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER" program i use to look at my pics... When i transfer pictures from my camera to my laptop- i simply open the files from my camera- then i drag them on to a new folder i create on a larger folder that is on my desktop. This what I have been doing for years... I assumed that they were saved when i am then able to open and look at them in that folder as supposed to directly from my camera.

In addition, i had my laptop plugged in all day- and several hours later that night i shut it down... that is when it froze in the "windows in shutting down" screen... when it wouldnt shut down, i held down the power button until it did shut down. I had turned it on today to look at the pics and am shutting it down right now- to REALIZE that there is something wrong- my computer does not turn off. It gets stuck in this shutting down mode.

Does this help you at all?

You have no idea how appreciative i am of any advice you can give me... I THOUGHT i was pretty savvy with computers but am feeling incredibly lost now. Is there a place i can take my computer to have it fixed adn hopefully find the files?

thank you!!!
nataliaDid you try the program in the link? Look near the top and select trial.hi
going to try that link now... just am nervous to do anything...
what do you think of this? i tried to shut down my computer and it was stuck in that "windows is shutting down" mode and then when i held the on/off button and then restarted it... one of my two files that was missing showed up. (unfortunately it was the smaller of the two files) but... do you think that the process of shutting down is actually processing those files somehow?
do i have a virus? why did this file SHOW up out of no where?
should i just leave it in that mode for hours in hopes that it will get back the rest of the pics?
thanks
natalia

Solve : PC is slow, no virus or spyware, what is the prob??

Answer»

Hi there

A friend's PC of me is very slow. However it's a realy strong PC (3 ghz, 1 gig ram) and i'm sure the hardware is not the cause. I did a spyware and virus check and everything was clear. I think it's because he INSTALLED way the much programs and UNINSTALLED way to much programs. Does anybody has an advice to make this pc BACK faster again. The pc really start up slow, so I think i need some programs for the following probs, so if you now a good, and certainly safe one, please post it here (please DO NOT advice my to format windows, this is NO option)

Registry (now I used regcleaner & ccleaner, they were a lot of unused key's in et)
Startup programs (I used startup run to make sure a lot of programs don't start up anymore with the pc)
A lot of old folders and files which were left behind by uninstalling (I look a PROGRAM to delete them, because it takes way to much thime to look in every folder if it's an unused file)

and meaby you guys now a few programs to for making his windows faster again

thanx

blackberryHave a look at Task Manager. What processes are running? Are any of them consuming lots of memory/processor cycles?Try this.. restart the computer and go to the BIOS settings and look for something that says.. LOAD SETUP DEFAULTS.. and it is going to ask you are you sure and you push YES then exit try that..or try this..
Downloiad Iolo System Mechanic 6 Professional and run it after the anyliuzation run PC TOTAL CARE.. and it will do everything.. defrag mem everything.. LINK: http://iolo.com/sm/index.cfm
Let's think this through before we go changing BIOS settings on a machine that used to work fine without any alterations being made.

Let's also rethink loading on more 'Optimization' software that already has not worked.

Maksim you post some generally unhelpful ideas. Unfortunately some people might think you know what you are talking about. As an example, defragging memory has never been proven to do anything. Lots of software has been used to attempt thiis voodoo and many people have paid a lott of money, but that does not mean it is valid.

Let's wait for the answer to Rob's question. You say the computer is "strong", but you forget that the computer can't load faster than the speed of the harddrive.blackberry...... Perhaps a defrag might help ........ or has this been done ?
How does the machine appear to work once it's fully booted up ?

Only common windows processess (like explorer.exe) and just antivirus (norton). But the strange thing is, processess from windows are strange. If you just open an easy thing (like notepad) the process increase and use lots and lots of memory. You might think it is because of the hardware, but it's certanly not that, because it used to be normal, with the whole same hardware.

Quote
You say the computer is "strong", but you forget that the computer can't load faster than the speed of the harddrive

That's a fact I can't deny. However I don't think it's because of this, like I mentioned before, it used to be a whole lot faster with the same hardware.

I wanted to do that too. But the problem is, that asks (the same problem for deleting temp files) to much from the computer, the processess increase to much, and the pc blocks... Quote

What's the size of your HDD and how many space out of that are you using?

You said it was working fine previously, so can you remember SINCE when it started running slow? And what you did to the computer/system around that time? Quote

Norton would be the #1 offender. In this scenario, i would test it by unplugging the current hard disk & attaching another hard disk. BY this, i would get the idea where the problem could be. I know there could be different softwares on these diff hard disks, but what if we try the second hard disk with the least software ? Quote

Solve : Problems with Music folder?

I'm having trouble figuring out a problem in my music folder. Recently the font for the titles in the folder has changed to blue for a big chunk of the songs, in no particular order. I have tried renaming them and they again reappear in blue. I have no idea why this can be happening. I've run all my antiviruses and cleaners INCLUDING Ad-aware, Spybot, Ewido, CCleaner and even Norton and none of them have fixed it. I'm running an AMD Athlon Processor with Windows XP HOME that STAYS updated. Anyone have any ideas? Not much info on your system or the Music software you are running however any files with blue fonts have been compressed somehow or another....

Solve : Cannot Download .ZIP File?

Answer»

I have a user who is having a problem downloading a .zip file to his laptop. He has a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, running WIN XP Pro sp2, 1.5GB of RAM, and 55.8GB of HD. He has ample storage space available (definately more than 2-3 times the size of the file). He tries to DOWNLOAD the file and gets a message from windows stating the file was blocked, and it gives him the option to unblock. So he unblocks the file and still nothing happens. If someone else downloads the file, he is able to copy it over. He is still unable to unzip the file, windows blocks him. He unblocks the file and tries to unzip the file again with the same outcome. However, now if he tries to go in and unblock the file the option to "unblock" is gone. I've googled the problem and found some suggestions pointing to sp2. Here are some of the things I've tried to do already: I disabled his firewall temporarily, that didn't do anything. I had him use another 3rd party zip handler, that didn't do anything. I went to:

http://www.sysinternals.com/search/default.aspx?query=streams+utility&x=5&y=4

and downloaded the Sysinternals Freeware - File and DISK utilities to our server. I had to do it this way for the user to be able to access it because this file is also a .zip file. Once I extracted the file on the server, he was able to access it, but this also did not work. I'm stumped once again and not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

It suggests that you unzipped/unrared or whatever and that he got the file ....so what didnt work ?

dl65 Can you provide more information ....... for example, what is the extension of the file that cannot be downloaded? A. Zip.
How was it compressed? Zip or Rar or? A. Zip
What is being used to extract it? A. XP SP2 Compression-extraction
Is the machine being used part of a network? A. No
Are there any restrictions in place which would prohibit the user from downloading? A. No. Full Admin Rights.

I was wrong when I said I unzipped the file to the server and he could access it but it still didn't work. Please disregard that comment. I asked him to tell me in his own words the problem he is having, here is his response:

I can’t download any zips. I receive no messages related to this. If a zip is on a shared drive on the network, I can copy them to my machine. If a zip is on my machine, I cannot unzip it, I get the blocked/security message previously sent. If the software is extracted by someone else and then copied to my machine, it works fine.

Does this answer your questions??? Is there anything else I can tell you to help out??? Thanks for the help with looking into this matter. I will continue to research the issue and let you know of any updates I come accross.

I have an update. My user loaded 7-Zip to his laptop. He is now able to unzip files successfully, however, he is still unable to download a ZIP file.1. Start

Solve : WinXP not booting after a registry alteration.?

Answer» UPDATE: (last checked:sep 4)
I’m still looking for a solution. Particularly, I’m wondering the following.
1: Can the Windows XP system restore points be used manually?
2: Can anything from the diagnostic partition be used manually?
3: What files comprise the registry in XP, and where are they?
4: Given a working copy of windows on one drive (I’ll call "GoodWindows") and a broken version of windows on another drive (I’ll call "BadWindows"), is there any 3rd party recovery application that can run from "GoodWindows" and then remotely make use of the "BadWindows" system restore points to fix "BadWindows"? (It seems like it should be quite possible to make program that could perform that operation.)
Thanks.

--------------------------------------------
Original Post:
In the course of cloning and replacing an old 200gb hard drive, I found that the new 400gb drive was booting with the wrong drive letters. Instead of C and D, it was using J and F respectively.

So, I looked around for a means of fixing that and found several examples explaining that you simply change a few registry values.

As directed, I opened regedit, browsed to "MountedDevices"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

and renamed the following items:

"\DosDevices\C:" to "\DosDevices\J:"
"\DosDevices\J:" to "\DosDevices\C:"
"\DosDevices\D:" to "\DosDevices\F:"
"\DosDevices\F:" to "\DosDevices\D:"

After restarting the computer, I received the following foreboding message:

"Media test failure, check cable"

That is as far as I can get.
Fortunately, I can still access the new 400gb drive (the one not booting) as a secondary drive. Unfortunately, that has not helped much.

I imagine that if I were able to get the Windows System Restore application, I could simply restore back to before the damaging change occurred. Thus far, I have not even yet been able to get to safe mode on that disk.

Additional System specs:
- Gateway 507 GR
- WinXP SP2 patch
- Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz)
- 2GB ram
- 2 optical drives
- geForce 6800 Ultra

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would appreciate it greatly.
Thanks.
reformat that drive and all should be goodI'd suggest putting in the XP cd, booting to it and doing a repair.

Alan <>< if the computer has never been reformatted this might be a good time to clean and refresh it.. so its really up to you. you can try a repair and have the gumed up computer with an repaired register or you can back up anything important and reformat and start fresh like it just came out of the box. chose your path and we will walk you threw itI would prefer to get the system running again, rather than reformat the drive. At the moment I don’t have the time to reinstall everything.

So, a "How to get windows to boot properly again" walkthrough would be much appreciated.

That said, I have tried a great many methods thus far. Including the "Recovery Consol" method, the "System Volume Information" method and the "Windows\Repair folder" method. That’s not to discourage anyone from writing or recommending a walkthrough of the methods listed above. I am certainly willing to try any method again, as I might yet find some important additional step that was not present in the any of the versions I tried.

Thanks again everyone.
Hi,there maybe if you tried to partion this new hard drive you will be ok,but all data it will be lost.Usually during the partion you will set up the drive letters. What software did you use to "clone and replace"?

Do you have a real XP disc? If so, this may help:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxThanks for the suggestions.

While I am entirely confident that formatting the disk and reinstalling everything would leave me with a working computer, I would prefer to fix the copy of windows I currently have.

I do have an old WinXP disc.
I have not yet tried doing a repair from the CD, because I am not sure about the following:
A. If I repair from the CD can I then use windows System Restore application to roll back windows to a prior working state?
B. Is a repair from the CD reversible in the event that it does not work.

Thanks again
Replies - A. very unlikely, B. No.

Quote from your post:
"renamed the following items:

"\DosDevices\C:" to "\DosDevices\J:"
"\DosDevices\J:" to "\DosDevices\C:"
"\DosDevices\D:" to "\DosDevices\F:"
"\DosDevices\F:" to "\DosDevices\D:"

Seems you renamed C: to J: but J: was already in use then you renamed J: back to C: Then the same process with D: and F:

Did you still have the old drive installed when you rebooted after cloning, if so bios may have gotten all confused.

Recommend you physically uninstall the old drive, amend your bios to reflect the new drive then reboot to see if the correct letter configuration is set up at boot time.

But before doing anything - backup, backup, backup. In the future after you have restored the system and set up the desktop and all, you should get a disk imaging product and make a copy of the entire o/s partition and save it to cd's. Just old fashioned backup technology. So if your HD goes bad or you get a virus or whatever you simply copy back the entire, customized partition, boot and you are up.
However, it does require regular savings of your datafiles so you can update those - like I said regular, old fashioned backup habits. ThanksIn answer to some of the above questions:

To be more specific I renamed them in the following order.
C > X
J > C
X > J
D > Y
F > D
Y > F
So as far as I’m aware, there was no naming conflict.

I tried to boot without the old drive installed, but if I recall correctly it didn’t work. So, I then reinstalled the old drive as a secondary, and the computer booted, but the new drive was given drive letters J and F rather than C and D. It was at that point that I found a walkthrough, edited the registry and subsequently precipitated the disaster at hand. I did however export the registry just before editing it. I’m not sure what information Regedit exports when you TELL it to export, but it is definitely not a backup. At any rate, it looks like you have to be able to run Regedit from the ill version windows to utilize the registry backups, and that is not likely to be doable.

As an aside I did back up all my personally created content before doing anything with the drives.

Ironically, I am BEGINNING to think that the old hard drive was working just fine, and that it was a faulty power cable. It seems to spin without interruption on any of the new power cables.

To clarify my current drive situation:
My old sata 200gb drive wont boot to windows. (Likely due to a registry alteration)
My new sata 400gb drive wont boot to windows. (Likely due to a registry alteration)
If I can get windows to work again on either drive, my problems will be solved.
I have one more new sata 200gb drive that I bought so I could use a new installation of windows to fix the new drive 400gb for the sake of clarity I’ll probably refer to it as the "Rescue Drive". Oh, and because my WinXP CD is so old, the 200gb "Rescue Drive" thinks it is 137gb.

Lastly, does anyone know of an application that can perform a system restore on a non-running copy of windows? i.e. From the "Rescue Drive" could I run Windows System Restore as if from the currently non-functional version of on my now secondary new 400gb drive?

Thanks again
Sorry, I have no further words of wisdom to try to solve your problem.

However, remember, in XP you cannot Export the entire registry for backup purposes, it just doesn't work that way. If you do and then Import the Registry the saved version will merge with the existing Registry and likely give you double the trouble. Here is the MS kb on backing up the registry. Only individual Registry entries should be Exported for backup when editing the Registry.

A tried & proved utility for Registry backup is Erunt if you don't want to use the MS Backup utility.

Good luck

I believe the above comments are not correct. Even the MS link you cited discusses full Registry backup as an option.Duly noted. However, I’m not sure that backing up a registry will necessarily help at this time. I appreciate the info though.

My original drive does have a diagnostic partition. Is there any way to use that to my advantage?

Soybean - I entirely agree with you, however the article discusses Backup of the entire registry not Exporting the entire registry for backup.

Here are relevant extracts from the article - the highlighting is mine..

Manual steps to export registry SUBKEYS
You can follow these steps to export a registry subkey before you edit it.

Note Do not follow these steps to export a whole registry subtree. (HKEY_CURRENT_USER is an example of such a subtree.) If you must back up whole registry subtrees, back up the whole registry instead.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the subkey that contains the value that you want to edit.
4. On the File menu, click Export.
5. In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg) file, type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.

Manual steps to back up the whole registry
To back up the whole registry, use the Backup utility to back up the system state. The system state includes the registry, the COM+ Class Registration Database, and your boot files. For more information about using the Backup utility to back up the system state, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
308422 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308422/) How to use Backup to back up files and folders on your computer in Windows XP
320820 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320820/) How to use the Backup utility to back up files and folders in Windows XP Home Edition

***end of extracts***

Exporting the entire registry for backup was aceptable prior to Win.2000 (Win9x etc.) and Importing was the reverse but with the advent of NT things changed DRAMATICALLY. I wish that Import/Export of the full NT registry was an option and have tried but it results in a real mess..

However I will admit to having been wrong in the past and no doubt will be again but the supporting evidence is there for all to browse.

Here is an excellent article from Eldergeeks where Erunt is also mentioned..

Had Fisholith opted for either method he may have at least have been able to get back to the System State before the registry alterations. I fear there is no option now but to do a repair install.

Good luck.

Solve : WOW I need help?

Answer»

I had a mass of viruses today so i tried to get rid of them and deleted to much. I have windows 98 on my computer that i bought the other day so I don't have the original cd or boot disk or anything. I want to format my hard drive, and put windows xp PRO on it. I need a step by step guide of this, and i'd be ecstatic if SOMEONE would link me to one or write one up.Well, you can use the RESTORE disk... works like a charm. "I don't have the original cd or boot disk or anything." Looks like he has no Restore disk. You will first need to purchase XP (I prefer W2K)

Solve : Missing/Corrupted hal.dll -- Unable to Boot CD?

Answer» Please forgive me in advance for not knowing specifics about my pc, but I am unable to actually boot it to look up this info.

I have a Dell Dimension 9100, purchased directly from Dell slightly less than a year ago. It came pre-installed with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I have never reformated, reinstalled Windows, made partitions, or ANYTHING of the sort.

My power went out for a brief moment today, long enough for my computer to restart. When it did, everything was "missing" on my pc... all the start menu folders (the only ones were the original Windows ones, ie Accessories, ETC) contained nothing and just said "(Empty)". It said my hard drive had ~270 GB free space (it only had ~8 GB free space prior to the restart). An error message appeared that said something ALONG the lines of "Some Windows files are missing and your system may not function correctly without them. Please put your Windows CD in the CD drive."

UNLUCKILY for me, my power flickered again and my computer restarted before I could grab my Windows DVD. (I do use a surge protector, by the way.) Upon restart, Windows would not boot and would give the error: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."

Attempting to boot the Windows Reinstallation DVD has proved futile, since I get the following error message when trying to boot from "Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive" with the Windows DVD in my CD or DVD drive (I tried both): "Selected boot device not available - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility." I have changed the boot sequence to boot from CD first, and I tried to manually boot form CD via F12 Boot Device Menu.

I have attempted to boot in "Safe Mode" and "Safe Mode with Command Prompt", however as soon as I choose those options, the next screen asks me which OS I wish to use ("Windows (default)" is the only option), and then the next screen is my same missing hal.dll screen, and I can go no further.

Miscellaneous Info (maybe not even relevant):
Prior to this problem, I had uninstalled McAfee Center, as the Personal Firewall was causing complications with programs I was using. In addition to uninstalling all the McAfee products via Add/Remove Programs, I also scanned my registry for anything related to McAfee and deleted the entries (after backup), as was recommended for my problem with McAfee. This was the first restart since I deleted these programs/registry entries.Well, I don't quite understand your problem in getting your computer to boot from the Windows Reinstallation DVD. I think you're going to have to resolve that in order to get this fixed. If the Windows recovery disc you have is truly a DVD, it won't work in a CD drive; only a DVD drive will read it. If you access your BIOS and look closer at the options for first boot device, are you sure you've got the right thing?

Once you have figured out how to get the computer to boot from the DVD drive, here's a reference which my prove helpful: Langa Letter: XP's Little-Known 'Rebuild' Command.

By the way, you can avoid power fluctuation problems by getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). They have a battery to keep your computer running without interruption in event complete power failures and such brief power fluctuations as the ones that caused your problem. I highly recommend a UPS. Pertaining to the boot from DVD issue..

In my search for solutions, I've read on another forum about a person with a similiar problem (missing hal.dll and CD-drive not functioning), only with a notebook. Unfortunately, he hasn't found a solution yet either. So I at least know I'm not the only one with this issue.

In the Boot Sequence section, it lists the following:
1. Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive
2. Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (not present)
3. Onboard SATA Hard Drive (not present)
4. Onboard IDE Hard Drive (not present)
5. Intel ARRAY

The CD-ROM Drive was listed last when I first went there, and I changed it to first on the list to boot. (I read that machines use "CD-ROM Drive" as a general term that includes DVD Drives, as well... But there's something about Slave/Masters set for the drives, which I know nothing about because I don't know much about pcs. :-?) My options in the Boot Sequence section are to include/exclude devices from this list (removes the number and doesn't try to boot, but keeps them on the list), remove selected device if not present, select a device, and change device order. A friend had tried to help me via phone and said about selecting something on the list and finding more information/options about it.. but I don't have that option. Am I looking in the wrong place? This Boot Sequence section is a blue page, with other information such as System/Processor/Memory/PCI Info, Date/Time, Drives (listed is Diskette, Drive 0-5: SATA or PATA, and SATA OPERATION), Onboard Devices (listed is Integrated NIC/Audio, USB Controller), Video, Performance, Security, Power Management, Maintenance, and POST Behavior.

Any help regarding this matter before trying to fix the hal.dll problem would be greatly appreciated. (Both problems occurred at the same, time, however, so I assumed they were affiliated somehow.)Seems you are going round in ever decreasing circles and the inevitable will happen.

While there is one self-confessed Dell "expert" who haunts this forum perhaps you would be better to post on a dedicated Dell forum about re-setting your bios to boot from the cd.

Good luck.I agree with Dusty. See http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums; for Dimensions PCs, go to http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums?category.id=dimension.Thank you for your responses. They were greatly appreciated!

I talked to a Dell Technician via online chat, and the solution he gave was to use Dell System Recovery (by pressing CTRL + F11 when restarting), which completely wiped my hard drive and restored everything back to the way the Dell was out-of-the-box... No reinstallation disc required or anything of the sort.

Whether or not there was another fix to the problem, I don't know. But I can at least use my pc like it's brand new now, with no problems whatsoever. It fixed my cd-rom drive problem and the hal.dll issue.

(The technician asked if I had anything I needed to backup on my hard drive before using the Recovery, but like I stated in my first post, after my first restart when I COULD boot Windows, everything was missing anyway, so I think all that stuff was gone to begin with... So it wasn't worth the hassle to try to connect my hard drive to another PC to save stuff, considering I don't really know how to do that stuff anyway!)

Thank you again for your help!
