Solve : File/Folder is in use and cannot be deleted...?

Answer»

We've all had it happen. We try to delete a file or folder only to receive the infamous error message: "Cannot delete n: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." I've also seen similar messages saying something about the file or folder being used by another process, etc. My question is: is it possible to trace which process or application is using a certain file or folder?

Thanks,

"Try searching for the file in Google"
Well, it's not always that simple. Some of the folders/files in question are related to games or applications which don't seem to have CORRELATIVE processes running in the background.

"I have a hacking site.. "
What is your hacking site? Is it just a "hacking" site or is it a real 1337 ha><0r site? In other words: would you get banned for posting a link?

"i wish i could upload the file here.. and share.. it..."
What file are you talking about? I didn't mention any file nor did you, so what file are you wishing you could upload? Are you holding back some snazzy little tool from us?

Even though it doesn't quite address my issue, I still think it could be very useful. Thanks for the tip.

I've had ProcessExplorerNT on my USB key for the last 6 months now. That seems to be exactly what I"m looking for. *sigh* Moving on... I'll give this app a try as well and see how it works. Thanks for the info all!

Solve : checkdisk time?

Answer» HELLO..

ei, can anyone help me trim down the time before chkdsk starts on winxp...
10 seconds is just too long for me..

thanks..
Why are you running chksdk? Is the machine not being turned off correctly? Other problems? Unless there was an error it should not start automatically. We will need some more details.the machine is being turned off correctly but sometimes it just restarts then the disk checking begins and i want to cut the ten seconds before it starts to 3 or 1 sec... It jujst restarts when you turn it off? Maybe that isthe bigger ISSUE to address.actually the problem is for my younger brothers, when they use the pc, they do all sorts of things and sometimes the pc hangs then they restart the machine and skips the disk checking. i need to ADJUST the time so they cant cancel it
With that kind of behavior you need to do the diskcheck when it wants to, and a few seconds is not worth messing with, if it can even be done.

If they shut it down correctly or fix the UNDERLYING problems it won't have to run all the time anyway. Think of all that time you COULD save!

Solve : eMachines monitor not working!?

Answer»

Last night I turned off the monitor, turned it back on (because I'm nuts), and then turned it off. This morning when it was turned on, it went to the screen it goes to when the hard drive CPU is off but the monitor is on. Yet -- the bottom hard drive had been turned on. I have no idea of how to fix this! Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this error?? "I am no techie but; here I would turn everything off, then unplugg- everything from back of puter. Wait 3 minutes.. plug it all up again, turn on, then pray* if no good wait for a pro's response~Are you useing a video card? Or intergrated grafix's? If you are useing a video card make sure it is in there good and the monitor cable is in good and tight. The original poster gave some pretty vague info which needs to be clarified.

The computer seems to start OK, but the monitor does not work?

Does the monitor light up as usual or does it look like in standby mode (amber light, etc.)?

What happens if you try another monitor on that PC and thatmonitor on another PC? Let's try to rule out some variables.

What kind of monitor is this and how old? How about some details about the machine as well and the video component?

See below.

Based on the vague information you submitted, it sounds like it just may be your Power Options settings.

Go into your Control Panel and check what your power scheme is for your monitor, hard drive, standby and hibernation.

Personally, I use an "Always On" power scheme, so the above settings on my computer are set to "Never", however, this may not be SUITABLE for you. It depends on one's individual preferences.

If all else fails, look for a loose power cable connection on the back of your monitor, as well as the PC. Before you fool around with any cables, please make sure the system is powered "OFF".

Hope this was of some help.Replying here instead of starting a new thread. It sounds like the OP and I have close to the same problem. I have an eMachines T3624. Tonight my daughter was playing and the monitor suddenly switched itself off, going to the screen that tells you the monitor is working correctly.

That screen only comes on if the tower is not turned on. Except, the tower WAS turned on and seemed to be running normally. I'm knowledgeable enough to troubleshoot some problems, but this one is beyond me. I can't troubleshoot from the actual computer because, well, obviously, I can't access things I can't see.

I tried all the obvious things, making sure all connections were good and seated properly, shutting down the comp for an hr or two(I thought something may have overheated). We haven't changed or added any hardware/software, except for windows updates in the last 8 months.

I've never had a single problem with this comp, for all the bad things you hear about eMachines, it's been a great one. I would really like some ideas on what this might be and ways to narrow the problem down more. I really doubt it's the monitor as it works enough to tell me it's working. But what do I know?

Thanks in advance.

Editing to add: Hope I can make some sense here (and hopefully not hijacking this thread). There are two different places to plug the monitor into the tower. Where it was plugged in at was the place we have had it since day 1. So I unplugged it from there and hooked it into the other place. That worked...kind of.

Upon starting, big red x in the tool bar, asked me if I wanted windows to automatically correct color settings and depth (the display is totally whacked). Checked yes, nothing happened as far as I could tell, display still messed up. Went to Display Properties to change the resolution, can't. It is stuck on 640x480 and the lowest color quality 4 bit.

Went to troubleshooting, selected the appropriate reference. Wants me to check if I have the correct monitor selected for use, all it has to select is default monitor and I can not select "Properties"(still using the same one we bought the system with). Moving on to "No, this didn't help me"

Wants me to check for drivers and update them. No WAY to select for updating drivers, but it does tell me the device is working properly. Next, please...

Does Windows support my display adapter? Yes, yadda yadda, so on and so forth. Wants me to check hardware acceleration and change it to "none" Again, nothing..

Is my BIOS out of date? Okay, go to Intel website to check on updated video BIOS and find out Intel no longer provides support for the video card we bought 1 yr ago...nice. I have e-mailed eMachines about updated INF for the monitor and the latest system BIOS. Not expecting much help there. The support site doesn't even have a search feature. /boggle

Beyond that, troubleshooter is unable to solve my problem.

I check windows updates, and there are no updates for my computer. I finally figure out how to get windows to check for updates for my video driver, no help.

So I go back to I cannot install my monitor(grasping for straws here) and it takes me right back to the second step of this whole thing which I cannot complete because the option is not there. After that it takes me back through all the options I've already tried.

Is there anything I missed? I can not figure this out and it's going to drive me nuts. The comp runs FINE except for the crazy graphics. Dyra,

First of all, thanks for the detailed info.

Last week I was working on a PC (eMachine W1700, in fact) that had a similar problem. This issue began after downloading an updated driver from Micrsoft Update.

I couldn't adjust the settings in the Display Properties, so I decided to "rollback" the driver. Didn't help. So I went to eMachines product support page and downloaded and re-installed the driver for the video card that came with the machine.

SUCCESS!!! Haven't had any problems with the video since.

I did some research and found the support page for your system here:

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T3624

I hope this info can be of some use.

UPDATE:

Dyra,

The system specs on your Model eMachine came with an "onboard" video chip (Intel 845GV video driver).

The drivers you find at the support page I listed above are for the machine you specified in your original post.

Please note: You stated that no hardware has been added since you got the machine. That being the case, there shouldn't be two places to plug in a monitor, unless...a video card was added later to this machine.

Can you please verify this?Okay, I messed with this thing for hours last night, and feel like a noob, in every sense of the word. We haven't added any hardware in at least 8 months, but shortly after we got the comp, we did add a new vid card to it. After troubleshooting this thing for about an hr, I remembered setting it up when we moved it and hubby had me plug the monitor in somewhere else than I thought it should go. Which is why I was able to switch ports.

Even after moving it, the graphics were screwy and after messing with it about another hour or two, AFTER I had done all the trouble shooting steps, I was just looking around and realized that the onboard graphics card was disabled. I re-enabled them and finally got decent graphics back out of it, not what I was used to, but do-able for the time being.

I believe that the video card we added to it has gone ca-put. The comp will not even recognize it is there. It has been suggested to me to take the Nvidia card out, dust it off, and try to see if it will work, we will try that later. What baffles me is why will the comp not recognize the other card. Is it completely BURNT out? Is there anyway to tell for sure or is it just process of elimination?

It has also been suggested to me to remove the integrated card from the hardware manager and reboot to see if it will recognize the Nvidia card. Is that even safe to do? I'm worried that I will make things worse by doing that and END up having to wipe the drive and reinstall.

I appreciate the response. I did update the drivers for my Intel card, no sense running outdated, even if I'd rather have the Nvidia working. I really wish I had remembered the Nvidia card sooner, would have saved me some time, effort, and confusion, lol.

Any tips on getting the Nvidia working or finding out if it's a bust would be appreciated. We tried reinstalling the drivers from the disk it came with, but since the system doesn't recognize it is there, that was a no-go.

Thanks

Solve : another excel question?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm trying to link particular cells in one sheet to cells in another sheet. For example: if a A1 takes on a value of "1" in my sheet 2, I want a value of "5" to appear in, say B10, in my sheet 3.
I am trying to find how to link a cell in one sheet to a cell in a different sheet. I'll save the crazy details, buy this is the stripped down version of what I am trying to do.

Thanks. Supposing you want to link the value of cell "A1" of Sheet 1 to cell "B1" of Sheet 2, you will just have to GIVE cell "A1" a name (say, tax, for instance), and then on cell "B1" of Sheet 2, type: =tax. This way, cell "B1" of Sheet 2 will showw the value of "A1" of Sheet 1.
How to give a cell a name? On the function bar at the top portion of Excel, on the far left hand side, you will find a box showing the cell number of the cell you have clicked. You just change this number to whatever name yoiu like and hit ENTER.
I hope this is what you are after. You can also reference cells on a different sheet like this: Sheet1!A1 Quote

To link across sheets, you can use either method mentioned by previous replies. I get the impression, from your "example", that your question is more involved than just linking across sheets.
Clearly, you're not simply referring to another cell when you say, "if a A1 takes on a value of "1" in my sheet 2, I want a value of "5" to appear in, say B10, in my sheet 3." If you merely link to another cell, the destination cell will display the same value as the source cell. But, your example says the source cell would contain 1 and the destination cell would display 5. Can you clarify what you want to accomplish? To go into more detail:

I have a range of "1" and "0". Each "1" denotes that an employee woks the designated shift in the range. Well this is very messy because there are a handfull of shifts per day and even more employees per day. So that is all in sheet one. In my sheet two I have the schedule that the employees see -- a very easy to read calendar. I want to transfer all of those "1" entries from my sheet 2 to the appropriate spaces on the calendar in sheet 3. It seems very DIFFICULT to put conditional statements in this workbook that link sheets.

I have done it manually, but it every month I put a few more features in this ever-challenging task.Well, I'm afraid your extra detail did little to make your Excel application any clearer. I find it still quite confusing. In first place, "I have a range of "1" and "0" makes no sense. A range is a cell or group of cells given a range name. That range can then be referred to in formulas rather than using the cell address (A1, B1, etc.). And "1" and "0" are not valid range names.

Then, you go on and say, with reference to your "range of '1' and '0'", that "that is all in sheet one." Then you say, "I want to transfer all of those "1" entries from my sheet 2". Sheet 1, sheet 2, ..., which is it? Then, you mention "the schedule that the employees see -- a very easy to read calendar" as being in sheet two, but then say, "I want to transfer all of those "1" entries from my sheet 2 to the appropriate spaces on the calendar in sheet 3." Sheet two vs. sheet 3, for the calendar?

Solve : WGA Removal?

Answer»

I have WGA on my computer, and have had no problem.
But my friend, Mar, who was here twice in a previous post on this topic, does have WGA, and it says that her Windows XP copy is not valid.
The problem is that it is....

How can WGA be removed?
You cant uninstall it like the other updates, in fact, its the only Windows update that cannot be uninstalled...........

And whats this about a "Kill Switch"? Is this just a joke/RUMOR or is it truth?

ANSWERS "LOL" and "MICROSOFT IS EVIL" are allowed..... As long as they contain a rant towards WGA.....

GO MICROSOFT! BOO WGA! BOO MACINTOSH/APPLE! Umm, go Linux? The official answer has to be: if your friend believes she has a valid copy of Windows, she should phone Microsoft about this.Yes, why didn't she start out with a ring to Redmond? Quote

Yes, why didn't she start out with a ring to Redmond?

So, umm, Maksim, do you know how FTP works?
I would really appreciate a copy of this patch you say you have. zylstra555....... First , If you friends copy is a real XP cd and only installed on one machine then a call to Redmond will have things fixed very quickly ........ But , if I recall your friends posts , the copy in question is also installed on her fathers machine as well ....and THATS the issue .

Now as for the kill switch issue ......... This quote came out of the mouth of a MicroSoft representitive ..........
He told me that "in the fall, having the latest WGA will become mandatory and if its not installed, Windows will give a 30 day warning and when the 30 days is up and WGA isn't installed, Windows will stop WORKING, so you might as well install WGA now."

That seems pretty clear ....... So at this time it's only a supported rumor , but when the Fall comes watch out ........ LOL
I really have no idea , why people take issue with having to phone MicroSoft ..... It's really very simple ...... unless they are attempting to hide something .

Solve : strange outlook problem?

Answer»

I'm having a strange problem with outlook. when I TRY to use it to connect t
o my email server it gives me an error if I don't turn off my anti-virus ema
il scanner because my email service already has a scanner. I forgot to turn
it off the last time I checked my mail and the error window popped up. I clo
sed the window and outlook, disabled the email scanner and tried to reconnec
t. now outlook opens, but so does part of the blue top of another window (no
t the whole window) this is not allowing me to click on ANYTHING in outlook.
The part of the window just flashes. Any thoughts?

Have you closed Outlook or rebooted since this behaviour started? You should not incidentally need to turn off your virus checker just because your ISP uses one!yes I have rebooted. Same problem. I don't think I should have to turn off the email scanner either, but they said that would cause a connection error, and that worked. but I still get that weird half opened window. I rebooted my computer in safe mode and same thing. Are you using any spyware/malware REMOVAL tools to keep your system clean? Do you run any disk cleanup tools such as Windows Disk Cleanup or >CCleaner
But, I think I'd be inclined to uninstall your anti-virus software first and see whether that solves the problem. And, I'd also run CCleaner before REINSTALLING your anti-virus software and before TESTING Outlook with your anti-virus software uninstalled.

If, indeed, you can not retrieve email with your anti-virus software enabled, how do you plan to utilize it? Periodically run a full scan or what? What anti-virus software are you using?

The stated requirement by the ISP of turning off anti-virus software makes no sense to me, and it doesn't sound right to robpomeroy either. Think about it. Once your email has been scanned for viruses by your ISP and is on it's way to your computer, what difference should it make whether you have anti-virus software enabled and monitoring your incoming mail?

My ISP is Earthlink. They scan all mail for viruses. That has no effect on me retrieving mail with Outlook with my anti-virus software enabled.thanks for the replies. I have a few things I'm going to try.Let us know how it goes. Another thought: you might set up your email account in Outlook Express and see whether you can retreive email, without and with your anti-virus software enabled. I'm not suggesting you permanently switch to OE; this would be just for troubleshooting purposes.hi try and re-config the outlook express, what you have done is perfect, your outlook could have been blocked because of the scanner too, cant say try and get in touch with them, else re-config your outlook, what is the mail server you are using, lemme knw i will see if i can give you a proper solution. i have worked o this before i was a troubleshooter for a networking company. takecare - paul.http://

Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexing and updates lists of the files on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completley unnecessary.
To disable it, go to the Control PANEL and click Add or Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. SIMPLY untick the Indexing services and click Next!
Go into "My Computer", right click on all your hard drive partitions one at a time, left click "Properties". Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching". Select "Apply changes to subfolders and files". If any files can not be updated select "Ignore All".

Just like Windows 2000, Windows XP still fails to set the DMA mode correctly for the IDE device designated as the slaves on the primary IDE and secondary IDE channels. Most CD-ROMS are capable of supporting DMA mode, but the default in XP is still PIO. Setting it to DMA won't make your CD-ROM faster, but it will consume less CPU cycles. Here's how:
Open the Device Manager. One way to do that is to right-click on "My Computer", select the Hardware tab, and select Device Manager.
Expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and double-click on "Primary IDE Channel".
Under the "Advanced Settings" tab, check the "Device 1" setting. More than likely, your current transfer mode is set to PIO.
Set it to "DMA if available".
Repeat the step for the "Secondary IDE Channel" if you have devices attached to it. Reboot.

If the computer persists on having only PIO after reboot even though the hard drive is a flashing super-duper ATA133 and transfer mode set to “DMA if available”, then you have to do the following:
Remove the primary device in the device manager and reboot! Voilà, now the harddrive should be running in DMA mode.
Repeat on the secondary IDE channel if necessary.

Windows XP has built-in support for .ZIP files, so that you can view them as normal folders. However, the system uses a sizeable portion of resources doing this, so disabling this feature can increase performance. It's easy to do, you just have to un-register the zipfldr.dll, by going to Start -> Run... Copy & Paste > regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll < , then PRESS Enter. You should see a message telling you the command was succesfully applied.

In normal usage, XP pages sections from the kernel core and drivers in memory to disk. We can stop this happening and keep the data in RAM, resulting in improved performance.
Run regedit.exe ( Start > Run, type in regedit & press Enter)
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory Management/
The setting we want to change to disable the ’Paging Executive’, as it is called, is called DisablePagingExecutive. ChangGood find! Definitely one for the FAQs.I should really try some of these , might get a few Extra Frames.

I find people complaining about Index.dat Funny, most people only complain because theres Certain sites they Shouldn't be on in work especially, Its a Great Admin tool, its easy to get on XP tho, its just a Hidden, System file

And home users Are Bliss Fully ignorant of it Existence, Till some one go's and tell them , and then they get all paranoid and start downloading all that make your computer Private CRAP and then Suffer something fierce. Quote

Good find! Definitely one for the FAQs.

My fear in doing that is "bumping off" one of the existing FAQ's.Great "advice and info" most appreciated, question when u get a chance-

I have a wireless home network running off that new verizon fiber optic. Firewall is up.. any advice on this software and should i get / use another syware * You posted some free ones like spy-bot etc.. honvetops, due to your sloppy writing, it's difficult to understand exactly what software you now have that you'd like feedback on. How about spelling out EXACTLY what software you now have. For, if you want to discuss spy-bot, then spell it correctly; Spybot Search & Destroy. Why should readers of your post have to guess what you mean due to sloppy writing?I use: Ad-aware
          Spybot
          AVG free anti-virus
          EasyCleaner for registry

;ok so you turn on your computer, it takes a minute to boot off the Floppy, (a Win98 Floppy i persume?)

then you can SEE this?

A:\>

then you type in
format C:

and it looks like
A:\>format C:

you hit Enter and it Say's
"Bad bommand or file name"

is this what Happens?

You don't need the slash at all: format c:
But unless the program "format" is available on your floppy drive, or SOMEWHERE on your hard drive, this will not achieve anything.Hi right, format not installed, wow what would I do now short of jumping off a tall bridge holding my lap top? thanks don

Solve : how to connect from home to internet on my office??

Answer»

yes i know it will not be the same speed when i use the ADSL at home because of the limitations of the telephone line, but anyway i could use it, beside the other possibilities of the net,. not only from my home (using my lap top) if i could make the connection i want. Ok! making it simpler i have a LAN at work and i want to get access to it from home, over the telephone line, and use all its possibilities, as if i were in the office, every where in the XP manual they write this is POSSIBLE but nobody explain "how"to do it.

quote

share a single connection to the Internet through a single computer running XP.>

....I know its not a difficult task but i cant configure the modem in the office computer to receive incoming calls and log in (also i'm not sure about how to configure the account or the connection in the office computer in order to ACCEPT remote login;
Example: you search for remote access in the windows help center, they write : to give access rights to incoming connectios you must: open "net connections" and click on "incoming connections" and after that "Net task" and "change config. of this connection" and so on..... But when i open net connections i cant find anywhere the "incoming connections " tab...!!!).

Hope is clear now.

thanks for your attention.

Okay. I THINK we're approaching a solution here. To summarise:

  • you have dial up at home, not broadband
  • you have broadband at work
  • you want to connect from home to work so that you can get onto your work's network
The solution to this is VPN ("Virtual Private Networking" - which creates a private, relatively secure connection between your home and office). How you actually achieve this depends on your hardware. Do you have a server at work? Do you have a router at work? Can that router FUNCTION as a VPN server, or does it have VPN passthrough capabilities? Does your work's broadband come with a static IP address?

If you are unsure of the answers, please ask your network administrator. If you don't have a network administrator, come back to us for more guidance. If you only have one computer at work, connected to the broadband, say so.ok we are closer now¡
i cant do a VPN because as i told i have no accounts in my house i only have a modem. thats why my only way is the telephone line to make a connection to my oficce computer. and thats why i need to make an incoming connection with a 56k modem in the server at work.
and for now the net in my work is just begining. we have a server and a switch LinkSys and yes the broadband came with static IP address manually set.
thanks for your answer.
i dont know if you Saw but theres a topic about setting up a VPN, but its got to an Impass.

Altho , i think we may be able to acomidate you better.

Windows VPN settings are Pretty Easy , if its Direct PC to PC thing Quote
i cant do a VPN because as i told i have no accounts in my house i only have a modem.
On the contrary, VPN will work over dialup.

It will be horrendously slow though!I think the aspect of this problem that people are missing is that, from what I understand, he doesn't have internet access at home.

It sounds like he has a modem but no dial-up service subscription to access the internet. He doesn't want to pay for internet access at home. He wants to use his modem to dial into his office network and use their access. While I'm sure this is possible, I don't have a solution. Just hoping to make the challenge a bit clearer for others.Oh good grief how obtuse we've all been. I think you're right.

That just involves having a modem at the office end that can take incoming calls, and would depend on hardware available and server operating system. Quote

Solve : USB??

Answer»

I know that Windows 95a does not support USB at all, but I was wondering... if the XP USB DRIVERS are COPIED over, would there be a way to edit Windows 95 to read these? Probably not and I feel stupid for asking, but if there would be some way, it would GREATLY help me. I had a problem with my laptop, booting it up with Windows 95 floppies because it doesn't have a CD drive. Well, I FINALLY got it up and running and now, unless I spend $60 on a CD drive, the only way I can transfer data is through the floppy but if I could get the USB to work, I could use my JumpDrive. Thanks to anyone who responds.Actually, I have a second question. I have the Windows 98SE CD and even though I've searched through Google and things like that, everyone says it can't be broken down into floppies so I could install it on my laptop. But I figured I'd ask here just for the *censored* of it. Is there a way to break the Win98SE CDs down and how would it be done? If there is, I don't even care how many floppies it would take, I just want it done. I think that would be easier than trying to get Windows 95 to read USB.If you have an external zip drive to use, you can just copy the CD files to the hard drive and load it from there. I have done this many times on older, limited equipment.Or another way...grab a 2.5"HDD to IDE adapter, put the laptop drive in a desktop machine, copy Win98SE to the laptop drive and as GX1 said install it from there...

Solve : Desktop Freezing when accessing media files..viru?

Answer»

For the past week I have been experiencing freezing on my desktop and I'm a little concerned I may have a virus of some sort. Whenever I open a movie folder, or any folder with 'thumbnails' of movies in it, the desktop immediately freezes up and I'm forced to CTRL-ALT-DEL and free things up. If the folders view is set to view as 'details' then I do not experience freezing. However, if I try and open a folder which previously is set to 'thumbnails' view(shows a preview screenshot of the movie), it freezes immediately before I get a chance to change it's view setting. I have also have been getting this error while playing movies the past week causing freezes: Drwatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close..

I've googled 'Dr.Watson errors' and I guess numerous things can cause this problem to occur? I don't know where to begin. It seems most of the freezing happens when dealing with movies and thumbnailed folders. Please tell me which scans I should run, and other info to help solve this annoying problem I'm experiencing.

Please Help!Okay. This is why you need good virus protection. . .(such as McAfee or Norton Antivirus for Windows)

And Spyware protection (I recommend SpyBot Search and Destroy)

And Adware protection (such as AdAware)

get those things, run them, and see if you still have the problem.

--squirrel If you only Experience the Problem when Viewing the Thumbnails of Videos , then don't Worry, it a common XP Error, it happens when XP poles a Preview and finds the Codex Don't wana Play nice

I would just Turn off ThumbnailsSince you are Having Problems with Video , a good player is VLC
if you would prefer to try and fix the Codex Problem , Get the Kazaa Lite Mega CODEC Pack.

As for Anti Virus, Don't use Norton, Try AVG Free, and Also for Mal ware Try Ewido, And for AD Ware , try Ad-Aware.

You have some adware installed right now , Called When U Save, its not the Worst tho, it only dose what it supposed to , and that is show you Add's because perhaps you have a program thats making its cash trough those add's. either way , adware or Ewido will remove itAVG? AVG doesn't catch a lot of things. I prefer McAfee VirusScan. SpyBot is good for spyware.Yes, I agree with panboy, it is just a Windows XP problem with thumbnails. You can fix this by downloading every codec possible (or at least for all the movies in the folders) or get a media player that can play almost anything.

Once again I agree with Panboy, VLC is one of my favorites.
AVG might not be the Best , but its the Best Free one ^.^,

i don't Like Norton, McAfee is Pretty Good, but it costs moneys.

I would have Recommended Spy Bot , But you already had , no need to Repeat people. i use Ad-aware , Spy bot Ewidow and AVG, but i wouldn't Touch NortonWow, thanks alot guys! I'll download some of these and see if I can't try and fix it.

As far as turning thumbnailed views off, How do you change universal folder settings to change ALL folders view to detailed? I can only do them one by one, and under Folder options > view I don't see an option to change ALL folders view. This is all youneed for codecs:

http://www.theorica.net/codecs.htm

Pick the appropriate one for your purposes!Awesome That worked Thanks for the help guys

Solve : Spy ware?

Answer»

Is there a way to prevent spy sware to get on a PC, My friend's PC is getting a lot of them. I clean them up with Ad-aware and Spybot, as an experiment, I went on a few site, then I scan the PC with Ad-ware and spybot again, the spy ware came back. I did this a few time and the same thing happened. Among the spy ware are these 2o7, admit.... What can I do to complete bar them from the PC? Is there a LIST available to find out where they come from?

MacPCFirst, I would disconnect that computer from the Internet, and then RUN Ad-aware and Spybot, RESTART the computer (still not connected to the Internet) and scan again. Does some of that spyware re-appear? If so, then more stringent measures will be necessary to clean it up.

Is a fireware enabled on that computer? Firewall protection is absolutely essential for being online and not getting quickly infested with spyware. Repeat, you should never GO online without firewall protection.

Since Spybot is installed, I would use the Immunize feature of Spybot. It's quite helpful in preventing certain spyware from getting into a computer.

To get info on specific spyware, use Google. Also, when you do your scans do them is Safe Mode with System Restore turned off to prevent reinfection. What I do is the following....

When I do not feel like purchasing anti-spyware softwares (or obtaining it through "other matters") I use their trial versions to my advantage.

To save some work run free anti-spyware's to get rid of most of the spyware. Then download a trial of Spyware Doctor or any other fully PRICED anti-spyware. They graciously tell you the registry keys of where the infected spywhere is. Then you just remove everything manually.

Also, zonealarm firewall is very effective with prompting the user of any sort of programs that demand internet access.

Best of luck.

Solve : Things to do with a laptop???

Answer»

Hello everyone. so my girlfriend just bought a laptop, and although i'm SOMEWHAT computer savvy, i feel i have not kept up with the latest advances in technology SAY for the past 6 years. can anyone point me to a useful website to help get myself back in the game. for instance i used to enjoy checking out cyberatlas.com and other marketing stuff. now i feel so far behind with the advent of the ipod and things such as "bogs" rss feeds?? and the likes.

so my question is this: what types of things can we do with this machine? it's a a fairly powerful unit. 1.8 duo processor, 100g HD, 256 mg video card. so i'm up to hear any type of fun SUGGESTIONS or ideas about what to do, and how to have fun and fully utilize this machine. thanks in advance for your input.

oh yeah, one more thought and question:

if we we're to buy the "microsoft streets 2006 w/ GPS" does it require an active internet connection to utilize the service on the road?

thanks again!!

jNo for GPS you Dont Gereraly need the Internet, it would kinda Suck if you did ya know ^.^

Your laptop Specs seem pretty Good, im sure it wont have a problem running anyprogram on the Market ATM, if you want Games's a 256Meg GFX card will run alot of games' at medium Settings, but to be sure it will run them Well, you need to know what type of card it is. Nvidia and ATI are the Leaders now, if its an INTEL Extreem ... your boned

As for Sites, http://slashdot.org/ is a Pretty Good Teckie Site and umm dig.ie seems to have gone missing ...thanks panboy. the card is an ati. so it looks good there. but one thing seems strange. it was supposed to come with a 100g HD, but when i got the laptop, it had two HD's on it, one being like a 23 gig? and the other like a 64gig? It sounds like you have 100Gig hard drive. It is probably partitioned.
How many drives show up on "My Computer"?

It is probably partitioned, you may find that one Drive has windows ant the other one has recovery Tools, is it a Dell or a HP? by any chance

They like to do the Whole Recovery Partition thing , and waste allot off space while there at it. you have a bout 87 Gigs available, thats a 100 gig drive alright, just set up in such a way you seem to lose some space.

if you go into Admin Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager , you can see how your Disk is Set up
Looking back on this thread it seems unusual to hear the question "I just got something and want to know what can I use it for?" Usually the purchase is driven by the need. Not a knock on the poster, it just seems odd......GX1_Man, you're to practical you shouldn't only get the things you need, if you did all the human RACE would do is eat sleep and have sex..... hang on a minute what was my point?

Solve : Internet privacy?

Answer»

Hi,

On the Internet properties, in the privacy tab under the Site button, there is a list of cookies that I blocked, is there anyway I can export this list to another PC?

I USE WinXP pro and IE 6

MacPCMacPC...

Assuming both PCs are running Windows XP (Home or Pro), you should be ABLE to connect both PCs with a direct cable connection or network.

Once the computers are connected, On the computer you want to transfer files and settings from, click Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Follow the wizard to transfer your Internet Explorer settings to the other PC.

Connecting Your Computers
For the best experience using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, you will want to connect your two computers together. You can connect your computers either by using a null modem serial cable or by using Home networking.

Connecting With A Serial Cable
The easiest way to connect your computers is to use the null modem serial cable. To use the null modem serial cable:

Both computers MUST have an available serial port (also called a COM port).
You must have a null modem serial cable (also called a LapLink serial cable or a serial file transfer cable).
The serial cable must be long enough to connect the computers together.

Connecting With Home Networking
The best way to connect your computers together is to use Home networking. Although the setup is more complex, your files and settings will transfer faster. If you are planning to keep both your old computer and your new computer, you might want to consider creating a Home network.

To use Home networking:

Both computers must have a network interface card or a USB network interface installed. The jack looks like a slightly larger telephone jack.
You must have network cable, and in most cases a hub.
The network cable must be long enough to connect the computers together.
Note: A wireless network will not need network cable or a hub.

Run the Network Setup Wizard to set up your Home network.

Hope this was of some help.Saviour, let's assume he does not have the computers networked and does not intend to network them. In that case, if he has floppy drives in both computers or he has a USB flash drive, he could save the file CREATED by the wizard to the floppy or flash drive. Now, let's also assume he only wants to transfer the security settings in IE. Could he import only the IE security settings? Under Tools, Options, Privacy in IE, I see a button for Import. I'm guessing he can use Import to import only the IE privacy settings from the file created by the wizard. Can you confirm that?

Edit: Well, I think I found the answer. >Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP< explains how to SELECTIVELY tranfers settings.soybean,

I love it when people find their own answers...saves me the time of responding.

Solve : problem with how the sound sounds like?

Answer»

hello! i would like GET some information and support for a problem that i have with my laptop.
it is not the strongest one that we have now but he is good enough so he wont "SUFFER" from this kind of problem.
the problem is that music through the mp3 player such as itune or winamp, i.e. sounds bad.
there is peaks mostly when it comes to high frequencies like singing and stuff.
it just that the sound craps like prb prb prb prb prb prb prb.
now the computer is connected to small pc speakers but soon this laptop might stat play in a bigger sound system and it is really important to have a good quality then.
i switched for the speakers, i downloaded codecs and tried to update the drivers.
i also tried to evacuate some memory and closed a lots of programs.
it is not the problem with the file cause when i play it in my mp3 player for example it is sounds ok
so if anyone have a clue for this please fiends help me so i can enjoy from my music.
Some laptop's pick up allot of noise on the sound ports, if the Sound CARD a an optical out , i recommend you use that, as it receives less EMI.

Of course you sound system would have to have an Optical in..TRY it on headphones to see if the problem persists. Cheap speakers often produce crappy sound.

Some laptops have sound better than others. Since you did not provide a MAKE or model we are left to wonder.

I've uninstalled the Kodak stuff and made sure the default is for shutdown and not restart. dl65, could you or anyone else explain how I can remove the stuff you said? I don't understand what they are or how to get at them, so dumbed-down guidance would be great:

Solve : Recovery for Windows XP?

Answer»

When you back-up all your files and then you want to delete everything and restore the DRIVES back though, how do you do a recovery?Do you have a system restore CD or a real WIndows CD or what? What computer make and model is this? Quote

Do you have a system restore CD or a real WIndows CD or what? What computer make and model is this?

I have a Windows XP recovery CD that solely recovers free software on the computer or does it secretly have an extra function? How is the disk labeled? Again, what is the computer make/model?

If it is a restore cD, usually you just put it in the drive and restart the machine, but it depends on exactly what you have there. Quote

I have a Sony Vaio
So what happens when you put it in and restart the computer?Sorry to REPLY so late, I was on vacation. I thought I wouldv'e got the Recovery before June 22ND but apparently not.

I inserted the Recovery DVD and Setup defaults for BIOS , then when it comes to the Sony Vaio Recovery Utility, it was going to carry out but before that a blue screen w/ the error message entitled: "Vaio Recovery Wizard" states :" Cannot Determine Partition Settings. This utility exits and your computer is restarted." What does that mean and how can I fix it???Have the drive partitions been tampered with from the factory settings? Is this the recovery CD for that particular machine or another? Some recovery CD's require a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive to be intact for a successful reinstall. If physically everything is the same as when you got it, contact Sony for specific problem solving.

This illustrates (again) why a real Windows CD is more IMPORTANT than ANY recovery CD you can imagine!

Solve : Horrendous Problem?

Answer»

My wife is having major problems with her laptop. She has a Dell Inspiron 8200 running XP Pro SP2, Pentium 4 2 GHz with 512 MB of RAM.

Last week, when she started her computer, the bios looked a bit odd, as did the Windows loading screen. (see attached picture) with alternating thick verticle bars.

Once Windows loads, one of two things happens:
Windows loads like normal, yet the screen becomes more and more hazey as time goes by with a rainbow haze. The computer maintains normal usage. The rainbow haze also follows rapidly moving objects, such as the mouse curser or dragged windows.
A white washed out screen with verticle bars slowly transitions into a black or blue screen. When this happens, Windows will not load completely or be accessible ctrl+alt+delete is not accessible either.

There are no problems when I start the computer in safe mode. It acts perfectly normal.

I have TRIED scanning for a virus and spyware, using Norton Anti-Virus, Spyboy Search and Destroy and AdAware. I have also tried replacing the RAM. Finally, I tried restoring the computer using System RESTORE. None of these worked.

There is a possiblity that this all started after our dogs knocked a small class of water near the laptop. As far as we could tell the water briefly touched the external case of the computer, but I won't rule out water damage.

My thoughts are water damage, spontanious bad driver(s) or a really invasive virus.Initial computer startup (bios) loading prior to Windows loading screen.White screen with verticle bars and other small objects of VARIOUS shape when Windows loads in a transitional colored holding paddern.Another portion of the transitional colors.Don't punish the dog!
In this type of Dell, there is a major problem with the video card....(and its not recalled, what a shame, Dell)
The video card is easy to break by opening and closing the screen.....(I thought laptops were supposed to be somewhat sturdy for this task!)
You may need to replace the motherboard, but FIRST, make sure this is the right answer. (as you never know if there's more to the story!)

Is this still under warranty, by any chance? It looked mechanical, rather than software related. Water near a computer?
You can try reinstalling the video drivers, or do a system restore to before this happened, but it may well be time to go in for repairs.Thank you for the good comments.

If it is a hardware issue, why would the computer run perfectly in safe mode?
Obviously, if the video problem begins in the bios before windows loads, it likely is a hardware issue. When I load the bios setup screen, the issue doesn't appear to be there.

However, if it is a hardware issue, why would Windows load perfectly in safe mode but often won't load in normal mode? It's strange!

Keep the thoughts coming, please!I am sorry, what I meant to say was this:
This is a problem in a certain type of Gateway model.

I got gateway and dell confused. You say it runs great in SafeMode?
As in no problems at all?

Because you are using generic video drivers, not those specifically for that card. This makes the video adapter more suspect. Is there any way to install generic video drivers for use in normal mode?

To answer a previous question, it runs perfectly in safe mode, though you can't use the wireless card in safe mode.Try to uninstall your video driver then in safe mode in Add and Remove Programs if there. You may not like what you get and it may not be possible. If you just delete it in DEVICE Manager it will try to install it when you try to boot to normal mode. Sometimes you can stop this, sometimes not.

You need to uninstall your video drivers before you attempt reinstalling the latest ones anyway. Yep this is a hardware problem.. rather than a software.. i think that the water or over heating would cause this.. try to clean the fans that cool off the video card.. good luck..

And when i right click on My Computer it says 383 mb and my moms says 512mb. So either thats normal and my comp sucks, or my comps been messed.
And maby the GHz has something to do with it, my AMD Sempron Processor 3400+ has 2.0 GHz, and my moms comp has 2.53 GHz. My mom has an HP and i have an Emachines.
So if that has something to do with it, maby i just have to go and buy some more memory?
But i stil dont see why my games are very laggy all of a sudden, and programs do not open as fast as before.Your GForce is integrated graphics so the memory for that comes from system memory. That would explain the "missing" RAM.

You say that computer used to play at the FRAME rates you mentioned? Then something else is wrong. Most likely suspect is malware, running processes, etc. rather than some sort of defective hardware.

We are still awaiting analysis of your log file.Your computer has onboard video; it does not have a video card. And, in the BIOS, it's probably set to share/allocate 128MB of system memory, i.e. the 512MB of RAM installed in the computer, to the video function. In such systems, Windows will report 384MB of memory in the System Properties panel. And, CCleaner appears to be doing the same thing.

Generally, any computer with onboard video is not going to be a great gaming machine. The performance of these systems can usually be improved by installing a video card and disabling onboard video. Quote

Solve : Microsoft Word Error Problem?

Answer»

I'm on Windows XP Pro, whenever I run Microsoft Word I get an error message saying 'Compile Error in hidden module WfxMacro', 8 times out of ten it wont run and have to restart the program over and over until it works, anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thanx..... :-?Read this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307410/en-us

For more: see http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&q=Error+in+hidden+moduleThat didnt help, because #1 when trying to install the Adobe update, it said I didnt have the software installed to go with the update and #2 when it said to MOVE the files 'pdfmaker.dot' and 'pdfmaker.xla.' a search didnt find them, and when I did a manual search following the sites directions they werent in the folders mentioned either, so I dont think Adobe is the problem, I also dont have Norton AntiVirus software, so the two MAIN causes mentioned on the site dont seem to be the problem....What if you just UNINSTALL Word, reboot and reinstall it? That fixes a lot of software problems.Do you have Adoble Reader installed? Which version? Do you have Adoble Acrobat installed? Google to the rescue again. This seems right on target: PDFMaker is unavailable in an Office application (Acrobat 5.x on Windows XP, 2000) Issue
Quote

Do you have Adoble Reader installed? Which version? Do you have Adoble Acrobat installed?
I dont have anything from Adobe installed, I use a different program for reading PDF files.....Well, I think you need to experiment some here. I'd uninstall your PDF frogram, run CCleaner, then reinstall it. If you still have the problem, do as GX1_MAN suggested re: Office/Word.Doesnt Microsoft Word just come in the general windows install disc? I cant find a program that just installs Word, and I sure aint re-installing windows just for this problem, maybe I should just live with it, its more a nuisance then a major issue....Its not the PDF program thats the problem, this has been around long before I ever installed that program, I just got sick of dealing with it and deceided to see if I could correct the problem....NO, Microsoft Word does not just come in the general windows install disc; Word is part of Microsoft Office, which is marketed separately from Windows. I'm surprised you don't know that. How did you get Word installed in the first place?

Go ahead and and run CCleaner. It might solve the problem. My wife got the harddrive from a computer guy, I guess she had him install it....
I run CCleaner everyday, that doesnt help, this has been a problem with Word thats been on my harddrive for at least 2-3 years....It has given you this problem for that long?Again, Word is not a free program; it does not come with Windows. If you don't have, and never had, the CD for it, then I suspect you've got an ILLEGAL installation of Word and whatever other Office components (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) you have.

If the "computer guy" gave a hard drive to you with Word installed on it, and he did not charge you for the software or give you the CD for it, then you clearly have an illegal installation of Word. If you paid for Office/Word, then you should have received a CD for it.

I SUGGEST you buy an legitimate copy of MS Office on ebay so that you can remove you existing Word and then do a legal installation of Office. I can't help you any further with this.

Thanx for the help.... 8-)

Any advice guys it'll be well appreciated

Oh! I'm using windows XP HOME edition. And are you logged in as the administrator? Is the Office CD in the drive of the machine? What if you uninstall Office, reboot and reinstall?Hello
I've uninstalled office and rebooted. How do I reinstall the CD?Theres a lot of installments/set ups on the CD.Please can you help as I'm a computer novice. :-? All the software was installed when I got The machine.
I am logged in as the administrator.

Thank you
Cazzie
Was 11 July a patch Tuesday? I wonder if some automatic updates have caused the problem here.

Coincidentally, that's also when MS WITHDREW support for Win 98. That isn't a Win 98 system is it? (Does Office '03 even run on Win 98?)Hi Rob

No Its windows XP home edition.I've never had this prob before that date.

CazzieOffice 03 required an NT-based OS to install.Gotcha.

Cazzie: Do you have a CD labelled "Office"? If so, just insert it and it should auto-run. You will need to type in your Office COA code (not the Win XP code). That may be on a sticker on the side of your machine, next to the XP sticker, or it may be printed on the CD packaging.Hi Rob

I inserted the CD but it didn't automatically run. What should I do Now?

Extra dumb beginner
CazzieOpen the Disc with Explorer, etc. and click on the Setup file.Hi Again

Reinstalled CD(eventually) retried downloads, again still failed to install?
Is it possibble for the problem being microsoft?

Cazzie

Is your Office 2003 an individual license? Not a corporate/multi-user licence, right? Did you go through the activation procedure when you reinstalled? Where did you get Office 2003? Did you pay the normal retail price for it?Hi

My friend installed office when I first got the computer and gave me a copy of her disk with an activation key number.Ooops, that is a violation of the Microsoft license. One copy, one computer, one license. Hi

This I did not know, (so that is why I've not been able to install updates)
A purchase of MS office is now on my shopping list
Thank you guys for all your help and patients

Solve : Computer runs slow when internet is loading?

Answer»

Hello. for the last week or so my computer has been running slow EVERYTIME the internet loads. The computer never used to run slow when the internet was loading. And it even runs fine every once and a while.

Some examples are.

-When I BROWSE web pages I usly look at more then one thing. I use firefox, so what I do is while one page is loading I open up another tab and look at that site. But recently when the other page is loading the computer runs slow.

-Is used to be able to watch gamespot videos. What would happen before is.... It would load 25% of the video then play that 25% while the other 75% is loading, and the video would run smooth and fine. But now I can only watch the video once it is 100% loaded, because once it has 100% loaded the video then the internet isn't really being used.

-When playing cames at teagames.com the games run slow because the game is constantly loading. It has been doing that for over a week now but I was playing it 2 days ago and it was running fine, but most of the time it is really slow.

It has been doing this for about a week now. I have run four diffrent virus scanners (AVG, Trend Micro, KasperSky, stinger virus scanner) and I have no viruses. I have run spyware programs (Spybot, Pest Patrol, Spyware doctor, Ad-Aware) and I have no spyware. I have also run programs like CCleaner, ewido, tuneup utilites 1 click MAINTENANCE, and diskkeeper.

After running everything the computer still runs slow when loading stuff off the internet. Why has my computer all of a sudden been running slow when loading the internet?? It never used to do that.

I bought my computer just after christmas. It is a HP Pavilion a1120n. It has a 519k INTEL pentium 4 processor, 512MB of Ram, and I am hooked up to telus DSL.

Well, I hope you don't have multiple anti-virus programs running at the same time. That could slow down your system.

Is the computer performing as it should when not online? I'm wondering whether the problem is actually your Internet connection. Have you ever ran any Internet speed tests? I suggest visiting www.dslreports.com and running a speed test and tweaks test. If you create a user account and are logged on when you run the tests, you can save the results and then see your results compared to others. You may have issues you need to discuss with your ISP.I only have AVG running at all times.

When offline it runs fine. I can download a video of gamespot.com and watch it fine, but when I watch it off their site it runs slow until the video is a 100% loaded.

I tried doing some stuff on an other computer (I never use it) I have and it was also running slow, so I guess my ISP is messed up.

Here is my speed test results:

This one was with all other Sonic packages. I don't know which one I have so I ran both of them.

About a week ago I recieved an email from my ISP:
It said
--------------------
As a TELUS high speed customer, you have usage limits associated with your high speed plan. As of July 8, your downloads and uploads exceed your monthly limit.
----------------------

I have been going over the limit of downloading and uploading for over 3 months (I didn't know I had a limit). So, could they be giving me slow speed and messing up my dsl because I have been going over the limit??Are you located in Canada? I would normally not refer someone to another forum, but DSLReports.com has a forum just for TELUS, as well as other ISP's. You might have a better chance of getting helpful replies over there. I suggest you TRY it: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/telusOk, thanks.

And yes I live in canada.

xp windows HP 256 MEM athlon proc 80gb hdTry running the Windows DirectX Diagnostic Tool:

1. Click Start and Run
2. In the Run dialog box, type DXDIAG and click OK.
3. Click the Sound tab and click the button to run the sound tests.

If it is a DirectX problem, let us know and we will suggest what to do to fix it.pcdoc4christ,
Thanks for the diagnostic test, that went great.
Everything was good.I'm really lost here. I'm playing the radio
now to on the internet and it goes off and on . It gets to be bad it doing that.I think I've tried about 20 different things to correct this.
I hope tere's some more ideas out there.
      jacobiJacob:

It may have to do with the bandwidth of your connection to the Internet. Are you using dial-up, cable or DSL? What you are describing sounds like some of the problems I used to experience when I used a dial-up connection, which is way to slow to handle even streaming audio.

Also, there is a setting in Windows Media player to send information to a Web site to to help with the quality of your signal. Check to see that you have this option enabled.

To verify that your media player is not to blame, try a different player. For EXAMPLE, if you are using Windows Media Player, see if you get the same problem when you use QuickTime or Real Player. Many sites give you the option to choose all THREE, which is a good way to troubleshoot, as it rules out the signal quality of the streaming audio as the cause. One such site is here:

http://www.kwve.org/

Try listening to the live broadcast using all three programs to see if one experiences the problems while the others do not. If this is the case, reinstalling the program that is having the problem might be the solution.

Let us know how it goes,
Docpcdoc,
I went to that kwve.org and clicked on quicktime
and also media,I didn't know what to do with it.
Then I clicked bluevoda to listen to the tutorial.
It starts and goes a little while ,cuts off.I down loaded
the kwve on desktop but I don't have winzip. Would that make any difference?I'm still lost.
Thanks again for your time.
jacobiYep, definitely a bandwidth problem. Make sure your computer is doing as little as possible whilst you're trying to play the audio. But frankly, your experience over dialup is bound to be this unsatisfactory, and if you're trying to view video/animations plus live audio, forget it. You need broadband or cable. Sorry.Rob,
Thanks for the advise,It does work ok part
of the time. Maybe if my comp is emptied out
a little would help.I've got about 30 icons on
the desktop to. jacobiI'm sorry, but that is not a guaranteed solution. The speed of your internet connection is THE determining factor here. This depends not only on programs currently running on your computer, but also on the quality of your telephone line.

You can't fit a camel through the eye of a needle - so it is with your internet connection. If you want to get more through at once, you need a faster connect, i.e. broadband/cable. Sorry!<------ Agrees with Rob 8-)

pcdoc,
I went to that kwve.org and clicked on quicktime

Jacobi:

I was suggesting that you click on the words "Broadband 96kbs" for Media Player and see how it sounds, then click on the words "Broadband 96kbs" for Quicktime to see how that sounds. If both Quicktime and Windows Media Player experience the same problem, it might be your Internet connection that is to blame. However, this suggestion will not help you.

Sorry, i failed to see you mentioned you were using dial-up. Rob is right, there is no way you are GOING to keep the sound from cutting out until you switch to DSL or cable or PERHAPS satellite.

Yeah, Jesus had a knack for telling a good joke now and then. His joke about how it is harder for a filthy rich man to get into heaven than it is for a camel to squeeze throught the eye of a needle must have made the poor crack up and the rich shake their fists.

I imagine He'd have a lot of good material in the USA where i live, where even the poor have far more than most of the people across the globe. God help the USA. OK, i'll get off my soapbox now!

Solve : Desktop won't allow Click and Drag?

Answer»

For some weird reason, my desktop will not allow me to click and drag FILES or folders at all. The "Commonly Used Tasks" bar has also permanently affixed itself to my desktop. I will attach a picture to this post only because this problem is very hard to descibe to most FOLKS. I have tried many registry fixers and all the options I can think of, but, to no avail. Please help. Thanks. What happened prior to this? How long has this been happening? Can you do a system restore to a point in time before this? Do you have a real WIndows CD to REINSTALL if necessary?Have you checked the mouse settings in Control PANEL ? ?

Solve : Starting a program at reboot.?

Answer»

Is there a way to START (run) a program just after a reboot or before the log-gin(password) screen?
I have a Home Surveillance System that has to be running in order to get into the system remotely.
So if the system reboots or someone shuts down my computer at home, I cannot getting into the system remotely. The program runs only under my user name and password, which I don't want to give to anyone.

P.s-Running windows xp.If someone shuts it down you have no options.

If it reboots and you want ijust to start up there's no need for an Administrator password, so just have it boot directly into your account, which it will do by default if there is only the Admin account and no password.

Have a read:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_passwords.htm

You can't have it both ways - a secure system with password LOGIN and a system that will go directly to functionality.VNC services provide remote connection possibilities and start as a service (i.e. are available shortly after bootup, and before logon). Follow the link in my SIGNATURE to the Software FAQ, and look for UltraVNC.

Solve : removing backup system?

Answer»

Hi I have upgraded from win98 to windows xp and I have little space left on HD. Now in add/remove programs i have backup files for old system which is almost 110MB I only have 128MB total and cant add any more ram as my ram (simms) are obsolete. If I remove the backup files will that be OK or will I have proplems down the road? It is an old computer and I only want to use it for playing games and storing/listening to music. I am not on line and wish to put in Office 2000 but have no space.Well, the best WAY would have been to format the hard drive and install XP fresh. But you can do that later, if you wish. Besides the loss of space you will inherit any Win98 problems with your new operating system.

Like many newbiew you are probably confusing hard drive space (110) with memory (128). These are not related.

You can delete the Win98 folder usually found in C\Windows. I am not sure what your XP directory is. It may be Win.000, but no telling.

Once you have some free space we can go from there.

Do you really have 128 RAM on there only? If so, you will not have much fun with XP.

I would recommend you start by using Disk Cleanup (under Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools and then download and run Everest Home. It will create a report that you can post here so we can se what you are really dealing with.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Why the urge to go to XP?

Really if I am only going to play games and listen to music win98 would probably be better eh plus alot more space t put more programs. The computer is constantly telling me low disk space but I have taken almost everything out of it like Nero, and Mozart etc. and still low diskspace where I cant restore back either as too low I just wondered though if I deleted backup files will I have problems? I do have Everest but I am not on line I am using another computer right now. I will have to get back to you tomorrow. thank-you for responding. About using windows xp I really like it alot better than win98.One thing I dont understand is that it is saying it is 12:45 a.m July 22nd when I posted where it is only 7:50 p.m. July 21st where I am. Im in Canada north of Toronto! You can choose time zones by clicking on Profile and making any necessary changes. that will solve tthe time problem.

Winndows XP takes aboutt 2 gig's of disk space for itself with nothing else loaded, so if it is a small hard drive, you will not be able to overcome that.

You can right CLICK on the C drive in My Computer and choose Properties. THe drive size and free space would be helpful info too.
Yes under properties there is little space left 202 mb left Now I think I made a mistake when saying backup files. When I go into add/ remove programs for more space this is all I have left "Windows xp UNINSTALL 119.00 mb, scrabble 12.65 mb, Yamaha ds-xg driver .16 mb, and winzip self extractor .84 mb Now I must of meant windows xp uninstall If I remove that would I be in trouble as look how much more space I would have!I believe you still have option to uninstall Win XP and get back to Win 98, but you won't have that option if you remove "Windows xp uninstall 119.00 mb". Frankly, I think upgrading that computer to Win XP was a bad decision. You haven't stated your processor speed, but I'm guessing it's also marginal for Win XP. Maybe you ought to re-think the Win XP upgrade; maybe uninstall Win XP and hold on to it until you either upgrade your computer with a bigger hard drive and more memory, or get a new(er) computer. So now if I remove "winxp uninstall" my computer will automatically go back to win98 or will I have to put it in again? I was thinking about just keeping win98 as I cant upgrade my ram as obsolete and I only use it for games and storing/listening to music. I also want to put in Windows Office 2000 so this way i will have lots of extral space. Right? Before you do anything, read this carefully: How to uninstall Windows XP and revert to a previous operating system

Yes, you will probably have enough room to install Office 2000 after unstalling Win XP, although I can't say with absolute certainty. After you uninstall Win XP, run Disk Cleanup, then check your hard drive free space before starting to install Office 2000. And, if you get to this point, run Disk DEFRAGMENTER after installing Office 2000.Thanks soybean for your help on both my posts. Now I will have somethingt do this week-end.

Solve : No standby or hibernate option this computer?

Answer»

I have two computers running XP Pro. One has power option properties which includes SYSTEM stanby and system hibernate, the other does not.

How can I get these option on the second computer?

I am trying the option to turn hard DRIVE off after 10 minutes, but I dont think that is the same as standby.

SandyWe know nothing about the computers. See below. Is the "Standby" BUTTON doesn't exist at all or exist but shaded?
Have you installed the proper driver for the graphic card?Possibly not just related to your GRAPHICS card. You need ACPI switched on in your BIOS and installed properly on XP, TOGETHER will the correct drivers for all ACPI-linked hardware (graphics, network, etc.) Check your BIOS settings first.

Solve : Windows NT problem?

Answer»

Don’t KNOW if I’m in the right forum, but if you could help I would appreciate it.

I have a friend who is running Windows NT and is receiving an “Error 692”. When she goes to log into her ISP, PeoplePC, the log on screen appears and then leaves. She then gets the error message.

Thinking it was a modem problem, she contacted US Robotics and spoke with a tech who advised her to have someone download a driver file onto a FLOPPY disk and install. Upon trying that, the “a” drive was unable to read or access the disk.

I have tried everything I can think of and have run out of ideas. Her computer did function properly at one point. The only plan I can come up with is to attempt to run a “restore” program. As NT does not have a restore built in I would need to attempt it manually.

Can anyone offer any advice on if this can done, and if so how? If anyone has any ideas about this “Error 692”, please feel free to offer same.

Thanks for your assistanceHave a read:

Solve : not logical...?

Answer»

ok, so, heres the prob, i tryed to log into my account on this computer, and this is what happend:

i type my password in correctly (no caps) and it says 'this user has been locked, please contact your sytem administrator' so i restart, and it DOESNT show my user acount on my computer (my account is named Dead Reckon) but instead it simply loads this Admin account of which i didnt even know existed, (doesnt show up in the log in screen).

i did figure out why my account got locked, some how, over night (i was up till one in the morning) milk got spilled under, not on, or AROUND, just under my keyboard and LEFT speaker (i dont yet know if my keyboard is salvigable, had to use a spare i had laying around)... now, what i dont get is just how in the heck milk appears over night... i did not have any milk in here, nor did i spill anything (and thankfully, none 'appeared' in my computer). i mean, for christs sake! the only one home besides me is my dad, he woulndt have done it, thats what baffels me the most, how did it get there...? this is no joke people, laugh if you want, but i am not kidding anyone, this is beyond strange... its just... not logical... man... its TOO EARLY for phantom milk to be ruining my day!

EDIT: i cannot access my account (dead reckon) and i cant access my files... i need to find a way to unlock my accounti got onto my account (used the "switch users" option) once i got on my account i restarted, and it fixed its self, as for the milk, i am still confused about thatSightings of stray cows in the area have been reported. no i dont sleepwalk, and this is my personal computer (no one knows the pass) its just odd that the milk got under, not in, or around, just under my keyboard and left speaker, not under my monitors, or computer, or mouse... and i highly doubt a cow can get in my room, or milk its self for that matterMilk virus. Solve : Sound and music stutters?

Answer»

Hi,
for about a month the sound playing on my computer like music or anything has started making a horrible sound like stuttering and slowing down every now and again, and it's when something is happening like a SCAN or sometimes if I open up a programme or a page, until the scan's finished or the page has loaded. Because of this I just have to pause the track and wait :-/

Does anyone have any idea why it's happening or how to stop it ?
Thanksid say your computer is just overloaded whit extra programs and hasnt got enuph runtime left for music

id try to get rid of extra background programs ,

also run and Anti Vrius, and some anti spy ware, addware and mal ware programs

for example

AVG :antivirus
Ewidow :Anti Malware
Spybot SD : Anti Spyware
Ad Aware :Anti AdwareI had the same problem. Reloading your Audio Drivers or Updating them to the latest version should do it. Worked for me.Ah I see, could someone EXPLAIN how I go about that then ?
:-? its Easy to Reinstall Drivers , All you need is to have the original Disk.

The lay out i differnt on every driver disk so i cant tell you where exalty to look.
but the windows wizzard will have no problem finding them

just put the CD in your computer If it autoruns there may nice easy steps to follow , IE, click a button call'ed "install SoundCard/audio driver"
if there is great that will do all the work for you

or else use Device manager.

Go into Control Panel , then open System, click the "hardware" tab
and then the "Device Manager Button"

In the list youll need to find "Sound, bla bla bla"
under that you will find lots of things that dont make any sence, but your LOOKING for the one that has the same name as on your sound card box or computer spec sheet.

then RIGHT click and update driver, it will send you trought the wizzard to install devices.

just go trought the Wizzard and follow the instrstions and you should be ok. if not come back for help ^.^I have other problems related to this. It's not just music and sound that stutters but also my mouse gets jerky when I move it, or other things are jerky when they open up such as pages or images etc. So I guess it's my computer in general behaving like this, not just my sound. It's not all the time, just when a scan is going or when an update is being downloaded or something like that as I said above, or EVEN when a little conversation box pops up when I'm on MSN. It happened pretty much over night. Are there any other suggestions ?Tell us about the computer, RAM, O/S, and check for running processes at startup through Task Manager.

Are you sure you are malware free? What protection are you using

How much free space is on the hard drive? Have you cleaned it up and defragged lately?

Solve : Windows boot-up freezing, still boots up... HELP?

Answer»

I recently INSTALLED a new motherboard (Abit KN8), processor (amd 64 3700+), and a vid card (nvida 7600 GT). I went thew the MOTIONS of installing all the hardware and then reinstalling windows XP, however thats when i noticed that the windows loading screen (with the logo and load bar) would go for about 5 seconds, then the bar would freeze were it was (not always the same position) and stay frozen for about 25-30 seconds and then suddenly unfreeze and continue for another 5 seconds as normal. I then installed all updated bios and drivers for all, but the problem remained. Althought Ive started my pc several times and its always loaded up in the end I find this 30+ second start up time annoying and possibly problematic. I dont know if windows just needs to be installed again (like the first time it messed up or soemthing?) or if its a motherboard or vid card issue...But before go threw the trouble of reinstalling windows I thought I would see If anybody knew anything about this. Appreciate anybodys help, thanks in advance.in order to eliminate the POSSIBILITY of it being a hardware issue, does your comp freeze/lag while doing anything else? can it run games well? (i see you have a nvidea 7600, you probably do gaming correct?)Yea my computer functions fine other then that, I'm currently playing Oblivion and was a little dissapointed that it set my settings to medium due to it didnt recognize my vid card and when i raised them slightly from that on my own the game dosnt look as clean as i would of hoped, but I am also running on only 512mb ram. Other games like Counter-Strike run smooth. At one other time I experienced a start up where the windows logo stayed opaque and faint for a while then it comes into full color and then loads except when it loads for some reason it didnt recognize my only cd drive and it would not respond...that seemed wierd but upon restart i got the whats become normal for me...freezing unfreezing 30sec windows boot. Stuff like that makes me just want to RMA my motherboard with newegg but I thought I would find out if it was purely OS related first. Thanks again for the help. Quote

... I dont know if windows just needs to be installed again (like the first time it messed up or soemthing?) or if its a motherboard or vid card issue...But before go threw the trouble of reinstalling windows I thought I would see If anybody knew anything about this. ...

To see if the video card is the problem, remove it and use the on-board video controller or a different video card. If Windows starts without a problem, you might try downloading the latest Windows XP drivers from the Web site of the video card manufacturer, booting with the video card, and installing the new drivers.

Doc
I dont have another video card to test with at this time as I just upgraded to PCI-E, however I have updated my display driver with the latest one fron nvidias web site. I even lowered the boot.ini timeout from 30 secs to 5 secs as suggested for faster boot times by some other resources when I tryed to google this issue. However there was no change at all in the freezing start up screen. As always, windows xp always loads in the end and has never completely frozen. Still appreciate all the help and ideas I can get on this matter, and thanks again. So, your motherboard does not have an SVGA connector to which you can connect your monitor?

No, otherwise I would of tryed that. I'm not getting as much feed back on this problem as i thought I would of. I was hoping it wouldnt be my hardware and be more of a software or motherboard deal, but you guys keep refering to my vid card. Are you guys just as stumped as me on this one? or does this really seem to be a hardware related issue?I've been keeping an eye on this thread and I'm wondering if you have any problem at all.
How long does it take to load XP from when you hit the button until your desktop appears normal?

in 3 1/2 hours?

Your impatience with start up times and trying to tweak that seems related to this. Different machines boot quicker, despite the same O/S. FED may be on to something.
I would actually Say its your CD drive slowing down, as you said before Windows Did not pic this up straight away, and I'm not saying its broken, I'm just implying its slow to start.

I had a Problem with the CD Drive in my computer , and i haven't got round to trying to do the fix soybean Suggested, but when i put in my Old CD drive as a substitute my load time went from 5 Seconds to half a minute. and yes 5 Seconds is all it took windows to boot after a fresh install ^.^Well I reinstaled windows and drivers from scratch in hopes that the the "freezing" would just go away, but no luck. My computer responds the same, which is when the windows xp loading screen first appears the load bar beneath the logo goes smooth for about 5 seconds, then freezes in wherever it is for about 30 seconds, then continues from where it was for another 5 seconds finally loading windows. Thats all the windows logo boot screen, not counting time to load up desktop or anything like that.
Fed - It takes me about 2 minutes to get fully loaded with desktop and all.
GX1_Man - Sorry if I come off as impatient, im not trying to knock any of the replys ive gotten, however I do believe this to be a problem. Although everything may seem to work and function fine now and I just suffer from an unusualy long loading time, I dont belive the "freezing" to be usual. I see it as a hint that something else is wrong, and now belive it to be hardware related for sure. Im not trying to tweak my computer or anything I just want it to run as smooth as possible/it should.
Panboy - You may be on to something, although Ive never had problems with my dvd driver before, nor do I now when I burn with it and all. When the load bar is "frozen" I try to open my dvd drive and it's unresponsive, then when the load bar unfreezes it opens. I dont know if this is normal or not, but Im going to try and open a cd drive on my friends computer while its loading. Anything to pinpoint the issue.

Like I said, this isnt normal so Im going to continue to work with it until I find out what the deal is and still appreciate all help or input I can get, thanks.
Look can't you stand 30 Sec's? Just be happy it still boots up.

ViperDo you have an HP SCANNER with a built in card reader? How are the drives listed?(I forgot to add the screenshot) 8-)

Additon: wow, during the upload of the last picture, two more showed up...No HP scanner, the only thing I have had plugged in was my iPod thismorning, at about 4:30, but I 'safely romoved hardware'Using daemon tools or anything like that?no, but I just got 8, low disk space warnings... Apparently they are all full now

heres the properties of one of themAnd you are sure you are free of malware? What happened just prior to this? How about a system restore to yesterday? Does that fix it?My system is clean, of spy/ad/mal-ware, and virii. The only thing prior to this that I did, was PUT iPod linux on my ipod, but I don't know how that would affect this, it just goes on along side the apple OS, and system restore has been off for a really long time, and it would probably wipe a bunch of stuff off my computer now, so thats not really a good option for me.What are you seeing in device manager?I'm not sure how, but it's fixed now.
However I did check in the device manager, and they were there, I tried to "disable device' but it wouldn't let me.

Thanks for your time though,

Solve : Dualcore Processors compatible with Windows NT ???

Answer»

Hey guys,

I am building a new computer and I need to have Windows NT on it. I would LIKE to get a dual core processor but don’t know if Windows NT can support it.

I appreciate your help, since this is kind of urgent.
>It would appear< that the answer is yes, although I doubt that there's much available for NT4 (or earlier) that makes use of dual cores. As NT runs on minimal requirements, why is dual care needed? You are no doubt going to RUN into MAJOR problems with drivers as well. NT Server was BUILT so it could Run on Multiple CPU's doesn't a Dual Core Act In similar Ways?I think the issue will be down to instruction sets, if the OS is aware of the difference at all. But my point is, if the software doesn't take advantage of parallelism, dual core is pointless. You may as well just have the fastest single core processor available, because it will be cheaper and you will not notice any difference in speed between and single and a dual core.

"B..b..but man, it'll be like having TWO processors at once!"

Well, yes it will, with one of those processors fast asleep about 95% of the time...

Solve : Deleting Temp. Internet Files?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Home, and I have Google Desktop installed.

When I was using Google to search something on the Web, I noticed my Google Desktop results were a LOT bigger than they should have been.

I tried searching another word within Google Desktop and hundreds of files came up as search results.

Where are these files being kept? I delete my Temp. Internet Files and cookies on a regular basis using going through my Internet Options and deleting them that way, but there is a cache of files somewhere on my computer that I can not find :-?.

Does anyone have any idea where I can start to look to eliminate these files that are just taking up space?

Thanks, in advance.Give CCleaner a try.Okay. I downloaded CCleaner, ran it, and it did get rid of a bunch of stuff, but i think it was more recent stuff than anything. When I ran another Google Desktop search, it came up with a bunch of of old e-mails and web PAGES stored, containing the keyword i searched for, in a cache somewhere that I can't find.

I can remove the files within Google Desktop, but the files/web pages remain unchanged wherever they are.I haven't used Google Desktop. Doesn't it show the location of these files? If not, right click on Start, select Search, and try to find some of those files Google Desktop is finding.

Do those webpages found on your computer look familiar? Are you using any spyware cleanup tools?Set Windows Explorer to 'show hidden files & folders' then Use the Windows Find function to search for the files.

Edit: Do what Shouvik soybean says. LOL.Shouvik???It's 6.30 am here. Quote

All Google Desktop does is displays an item that is related to the search you performed. It then lists how many e-mails, files, and history items are stored on the computer that relate.

All the pages and files in QUESTION are familiar, but these webpages are from earlier this year.

I use Ad-Aware to clean up stuff every so often. I'll try Fed's suggestion and let you know.Okay. I set my Explorer View to show all hidden files and folders, did a couple of searches for a couple of the keyowrds, and still nothing.

I UNINSTALLED Google Desktop because it really wasn't doing much anyways.

If they have been compiled, then you will have to REVERSE ENGINEER them to see how it was originally done. Assembly language looks pretty meaningless with an editor.

Solve : can' t run pc due to "NON ACTIVE HDD PARTITION"?

Windows 98 crashed and now I can't boot anything. I continue to recieve a message saying " not found any [active patition hdd]. It keeps saying to insert system disk, and I do , and i get the message above again, and again. Help! What do you mean by windows 98 crashed?

If it is crahed then you need to reinstall it again.

What is active partition?

That part of the hard disk CONTAINING the operating system to be loaded when you start or RESTART the computer. You can INSTALL 2 different operating systems ( perhaps DOS and OS/2) on your hard disk, but each must be in its own separate area, or partition. Only one partition can be active at any given time, and to change from the DOS to the non-DOS partition, you may have to use the DOS FDISK command.

So you see, if there is no operating system, then it will be unable to find any active partition. And an active partition (or an operating system) is required to boot a computer without the system disk.

Go to Fdisk and do it again.

When it ask for which drive to "mark as active" (do that). it will obviously be your c drive.

Solve : PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS! CANT SCREW THIS UP AGAIN?

Answer»

People, i need real help here. i've already messed up the "family" computer about 5 times, badly. and i dont wanna do it again. so, heres my problem:
I had a shortcut of the Internet Explorer on my Desktop, but i wanted to use the MSN Explorer insitead, so i deleted the Internet Explorer that was a "shortcut"
So my mom went on and she said that she couldn't Open the Internet Explorer anymore. So i tried clicking on the My Computer so i could go to Control Panel and Everything. But, once i clicked on it, the bar at the bottom of the screen that has START disapeared and my whole desktop too, like all the icons and everything and it stayed like that for a few minutes. Then it came back, but the My Computer never came up. so i clicked on it again, and same thing happened! So, now i cant open Internet Explorer, My Computer, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Control Panel, Recycling bin etc. Its horrible! Somebody pleaseee help me! im young and i dont wanan get in trouble AGAINN! What windows do you have?

SodaFirstly if your mum wanted to use Internet Explorer why did you delete the shortcut?

You could just add another shortcut on the desktop for the MSN Explorer browser.

Also have you checked its not all been dumped into the recycle bin, I've done that once myself and never even knew how i did it!If all else fails, go into accessaries, system tools, then click on system restore, follow the directions and restore your computer a few days ago or before you screwed up.
been there done that too.Windows XP?

Right-click the desktop; choose "properties". Click the Desktop tab then the "Customize desktop" button. Click the checkbox for Internet Explorer. Click Ok. Click Ok.

Sorted.Heres a better idea uninstall IE and MSN Netscape whaterver after downloading firfox ofcourse. it much faster than IE. I hear i was funded by the government thats the only thing that scares me. but its the fastest i've seen yet even running it off of a usb flash drive...If you want to open Internet explorer in windows,
Start ---> RUN
Type: iexplore
Press 'OK'

K-Meleon is faster. I have a Feeling theres more Wrong with his computer than Missing Shortcuts.

What Anti Virus , and Anti Mal/Spy/Ad Ware do You use?

I hope you can Download some programs some ware else and run them on your Computer.

I recommend Getting Ewido and AVG-Free At Least

Also Get and Run "Hijack This" and post a Log up here

This is the most obvious case of Spyware, it's not that the windows don't show up anymore (My Computer, Documents etc...), it's just that Windows can't handle a little spyware so it either takes forever or never shows up. A kid yelling this bad scared of his mom yelling obviously this encounter is a first with this spyware. I was EXACTLY the same.....almost the exact same situation as well.

ANY anti-spyware program will make them show up again. The shortcut is missing? Make a new one or look in the recycle.

I think we should blame the mom for being so harsh and not using MSN explorer, kids are under a lot of stress these days.

Aha.....I stand corrected.....we should blame microsoft for having faulty software, head on over to http://www.linux.org and grab yourself some Fedora Core. In their world....spyware might as well not exist.

P.S. And why is everyone so OBSESSED with Firefox on windows? Sure I use it for linux, but how else am I going to check if my computer is still doing well. Whenever something screws up, Internet Explorer always seems to get hit the worst. If IE runs fast, my computer is in TIP-TOP shape. There's some rather CURIOUS "logic" right there...I will take that as a compliment

Solve : Following on from my problems?

Answer»

Following my thread about the problems I am having, would it be EASIER just to do a system restore to back when the computer was first bought (6 years ago)

I'm not that bothered about loosing any files on it such as pics/music.

Only query I have is what would happen to my internet/outlook connections as 6 years ago I wasnt with Blueyonder.

How do I go about a system restore on ME?

Thanks
Well, we don't remember what your problems were. It is up to you to state them in each post.

If it has been six years, you would probably be best served by a clean install, but for help with TRYING to do a system restore:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/using/computerhealth/articles/systemrestore.asp

Windows builds up such amazing amounts of debris EVEN in 1 year, so all problems could readily be put behind you. Do you have a Windows CD?Yes I have the disks at home (I think). I'll need to get myself up into the attic and have a look beforehand.

Its the Windows ME OS I am using.Good for you that you have them. Seriously consider that reinstall. When I do the reinstall, will this repair and install all the correct drivers again? No, drivers will need to be loaded, and updated ones would probably be a good idea. You can download those ahead of time. WHat make/MODEL of computer, motherboard, sound and graphics, etc? If you don;t know download and run Everest Home. It's FREE and then we can go driver hunting if needed.Thank you.

Its a Compaq Presario PC that I have. I'm not sure on much else really (not computer minded at all)

I'm sure its a AMD athlon processor thats in it.Get the model # before you blank it out. It's probably on the case, or Everest can readily find it. Processor info will be there as well.

There is no good reason to not know what is in your computer.

Solve : Hi, just joined and have a question.?

Answer» HI there

I am currently using Windows Millenium.

Before when I had an IMPROPER shutdown, when switched back on the computer would perform a scan disk checking for errors.

Up until a few weeks ago, this was working fine, but now when the computer is switched back on after an improper shutdown the scan disk function seems to be not working.

It comes up with the box stating that its performing scan disk, but the processing bar counts up about 4 blue squares, and then jumps back to the BEGINNING again. This continues over and over again and I need to click cancel for the computer to load up.

Can anyone diagnose the problem and tell me how I can fix this?

ThanksThe most important question is what is causing all of these shutdowns that would require Scandisk?

How long since ME was freshly installed?

What sort of malware protection is in place?

What if you do a Scandisk and/or DOWNLOAD the free diagnostics from the drive maker's site to test for functionality?
