Solve : Windows XP Boot Problems.?

Answer»

Ok when i boot windows ( xp ) on my pc (im posting this from my laptop ) i get a message saying that recent software/hardware changes has caused windows to fail to start , I then get the option to boot normally , safe mode , last known good config etc . None of these work , i get a black screen when i use EITHER of these , i recently disabled my dvd and cd drives(before the problems ), as I was using daemon tools http://www.daemon-tools.cc so i could emulate my drives so i could use a downloaded copy of battlefield 2 , i think this is probably why i cant boot ,can anyone help me , google has been unhelpful ,

many thanks in advanceYou can try a repair install or it could be so FUBAR'ed you need to reinstall everything.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Do you have a real Windows CD?

Personally I think repair installs blow. The only time I go for that is as a last resort to get a chance to recover data. If you don't have any data I wouldn't even BOTHER and just go straight to the format. What you MIGHT wanna try to fix your problem would be a BIOS reset since you were playing with the drives. If that doesn't help what I would recommend doing a system restore from recovery console before throwing in the towel. Possibly even a chkdsk. For instructions on how to do the system restore from recovery console you can just go here:

http://www.myfixes.com/articles/system

Just my opinion on the matter, if you'd rather go with GX1_Man's suggestion then go for it but you can always do that after my IDEAS too. At any rate, good luck to ya!We will have to wait for the original poster to return. Many people seem to have "lost" their genuine Windows CD for some reason.  I personally feel that a good format and reinstall fixes most Windows problems, at least for a while, but many people resist this while looking for the "easy" button.hi ,ok thanks for the suggestions so far , I finally booted into safe mode with cmd prompt ( it gave me the option of not loading a few files , something like vax537b.exe or something). I did that and ran chkdsk , it deleted a few problem files , one was scan.exe , cannot remember the other one. trying to boot with normal safe mode , so far unsucessful.

how do i run system restore , i have the windows disk.i ran a system restore of windows CDfollowing the instructions from http://www.myfixes.com/articles/system ,when I restarted I recived the following error
Isass.exe - System Error

Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: A device atached to the system is not functioning. Error Status 0xc0000001. Please click OK to shutdown the system and reboot into Safe Mode, check the event log for more detailed information. What about backing up your data and reinstalling? Is that a possibility? YOu could have been done by now?

Please recheck the actual name you are reporting.  Have a read:

Solve : Can't connect...?

Answer»

Hi there.  I recently bought a new comp, and i've been having some trouble trying to keep the thing stable for more than a three day stretch of time.   Every so often it simply crashes to a blue screen and begins a physical memory DUMP.  That screen remains until i switch it off and back on again...

Before anyone tells me to resort to my warranty, I don't have one.  I don't go by them and nobody touches my computer(s) but me.  At this point, i'm blaming the OS.  The comp came with XP Media Center EDITION (SP2), and it seems every bit as reliable as Win ME.

On to my new problem.  I resolved the Media Center problem by taking the hard disk out of my old compaq and sticking it in my new HP.  It booted up XP Home edition, detected most of the HARDWARE just fine, but refuses to talk to my cable modem and i can't get online.

Does it sound like it's not detecting the network adapter?  In the device manager, it doesn't list the "Nvidia Nforce networking controller".  That's about the only conclusion i can make so far.

Thanks for reading, and for any help you might be able to give me. Quote

Well you have completely different hardware in the machine from that which Windows was loaded on so there are some problems. Some people FAVOR a Repair Install, but you need to have a real WIndows CD to do that. Usually Compaq's do not come with that, so you WOULD have to have a similar version to do that. You may be able to buy one from Compaq. If you go that route:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

You will most likely have to reactivate with Microsoft unless you are planning on using some hack for some reason to avoid this. As it a totally different machine than the OEM license that it was sold with they can be reluctant or refuse to do this.

I recommend a fresh install of Windows on whatever hardware you are expecting it to run on. I am assuming you do not have a Media Center CD as well, so you will need to decide on the next course of action.

Everyone will need a real Windows CD sooner or later. In your case it looks like sooner.

No. I want to install WinXP 64 because I have a 64bit processor and I think this will be mutch better.
I considered is better to ask here first before I install it.

Have you downloaded, I MEAN purchased it yet?Don't bother with it.
I don't have yet, but if your answers reprezent a green line, I will purchase and install it.

The download is another solution for testing this OS, but is temporaly

Solve : ipconfig stopped working?

Answer»

Hi,

My ipconfig for some reasons stopped working. I typed in ipconfig in the command prompt it tells me " 'ipconfig' is not recongnized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file "
It was working fine before. I did go into the system -> enviroment variables to edit a PATH because a program I installed requires me to do so. I might have DELETED something without knowing it. Can someone HELP me?

BTW, I have Win 2000 pro on my PC.

Thanks in advance.

MacPCipconfig.exe is usually found under c:\windows\system32.  Make sure you still have the DIRECTORY in your path.Hi Rob,

Thanks for the quit REPLY. In the enviroment, I typed in C:\WINNT\system32\ipconfig.exe, but it still doesn't work. (On Win 2K, There's only WINNT folder, not Windows.) Any ideas?   BTW, what are all these things in the system Enviroment Variables  anyway? :-?

MacPCOh, in the command prompt I typed in this path c:\winnt\system32\ipconfig.exe then it works, but howcome before I could just typed in ipconfig in any directory without going through this? The environment variable "PATH" tells Windows where to look for commands, when it doesn't KNOW what folder a program is in.  If you just type "ipconfig", it checks all of the folders that are in the PATH variable, until it finds the program.  Hence why you need to put that folder back into the path variable.Put c:\winnt\system32 in your path, not c:\winnt\system32\ipconfig.Hi Rob

Second, add a theme:

My guess is that is the cause of your problem.  Windows 95 and XP do not mix well.

Try a repair installation of Windows XP:

Solve : Need Help compressing dvd?

Answer»

Is there any way I can compress my dvd so I can send it to my Yahoogroups email SUPPORT list?
I had a "photo montage" MADE up of 55 still pictures and two songs.  This dvd made for me is approximately 6 MINUTES long.  But the file is too big to send to my Yahoogroups email list.  Is it possible to compress this dvd so I can email my friends with it???  I desparately want to share this with them!
Thanks! You could compress it into an .avi file but even then i don't think it would fit in an email attachment.

The video would have to be really small and the quality would be unwatchable.Shucks.........
THANK you anyway.  I'm surprised this can't be done w/o a halfway decent quality to put into an email.  But what do I know....I barely know how to turn my computer on.
Thanks for responding!punkysdilemms......  You didnt mention how large the file is . Why not upload it to Megaupload or Rapideshare and then simply send them the link ?  It's free .....  check them out .

Solve : Hyperlinks do not work in Outlook Express (anymore?

Probably an old problem, but could not find it in searches.
Problem: Hyperlinks to URL's in e-mail addresses have stopped working without any obvious reason

Copying of URL to address line in IExplorer works normally.
Anybody?

PS Someone here suggested IEfix (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm) but I am not familiar with this program. Please advise. If you go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, does it show Outlook Express for the email program? Quote

If you go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs, does it show Outlook Express for the email program?

Yes... and we also checked if IE was the standard browser (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/177054/en)
I know what the problem is. Saw it a couple weeks ago but I can't remember the fix right now. I'll do a little looking around today to try to find it. If I can't I'll find it at work tomorrow.Well I found a couple things you can try but not the one I was looking for. GIVE these a go and I'll find the one I'm looking for tomorrow.

The first one looks more promising than the 2nd one; will try tomorrow and report back. You can also download firefox and see if the links work there. At least you would know where the problem lies.

If determined to live and die by IE, you can try these in IE:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. Reset all 4 security zones to Default

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Privacy
6. Restore 1 Default button

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Advanced
6. Restore 1 Default button

You may need to do the following as well

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history

can someone translate this for me? would that work in my computer? cuz my grandma is having the exact problem with her outlook..What don't you understand? To me it's english but then again I speak geek. And I can't see why it wouldn't work on your grandma's computer as long as it's XP.Grandma should not be allowed to click on links within emails.
What you see is not necessarily what you get.
The LINK may appear (word for word) to be a link to her bank but then clicking on it takes her to a scam site where she can be asked to verify her account details. WOOSH!... MONEY gone!
Quote
‘Phishing’ emails are a common example. They pretend to come from your bank, and urge you to click a link to the bank’s website and enter your account details. Don’t be fooled: these websites are clever fakes, and typing in your details could RESULT in your account being emptied by the fraudsters.

Solve : HELP !!!! - Freezing during shutdown?

I'm facing a problem during shutdown. After starting shutdown process, it runs with no problems until the the last Windows message ("Windows will be turned off or something similiar). At this point, my PC freezes and I need to force shutdown by pressing and holding "On/off" key on my PC.
When I start PC again, the disk VERIFICATION process starts running and always some files are corrupted.
I tried to reinstall all sw I could, in order to repair a possible corrupted file, but with no success.
I tried to find a sw able to manage the shutdown to identify the process that is causing the problem but I couldn't find anyone.
Please, do you have any suggestion or comment? Please, let me know.

Thank you very much,

I deleted your other post as only one is NECESSARY.

Has it always been this way? What happened prior to this if not? Any new hardware or software CHANGES, monkeying in the BIOS, etc? What version of Windows.
Sorry, I should have deleted first post because I considered I posted in a wrong place.
I had this problem few months ago, but it was fixed reinstalling netscape.
I started having this problem again few days after adding a new LG DVD RW and installing the sw PACKET (In CD, Nero, Power DVD and Acrobat).  I tried reinstall them many times but problem persists.

Solve : Taskbar from *censored*!!!!?

Answer»

This thing apperently happens randomly and it happens when I turn my laptop on. There is suppose to be the language bar between (3) and (4) but I tried pushing it into place (apperently I push too much) that it disappeared. From experience I know that all I need to do is restart my computer and all will be well. But I want to solve this problem once and for all, so if anyone can help I will appreciate it alot. Thanks in advance!

here is an image of my problem:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i143/Abdulrahmanhilmi/untitled-1.jpg

Oh and I would like to add that the language bar is not suppose to be between (3) and (4). It's suppose to have only one divider, so in other words, it should be between (4) and the arrow at the end of the system tray THINGY. cheers!Right-click the task bar.  Check out the Toolbars sub-menu.  Also check out the "Lock the taskbar" option.  HELLO there!

I tried that and it partially solved the problem;
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i143/Abdulrahmanhilmi/untitled-2.jpg

When I move (1) to the left, (2) is pushed to the left as well. When I move (2) to the right, (1) is pushed to the right as well. When I move them in the OPPOSITE direction, the gap becomes bigger. In other words, this gap between the Quick Launch area and the window bars area is the smallest I could GET it. Not very nice.

Thanks for the reply!Looks like you had very similar advice at another forum too, judging by that screenshot!

How are you for spyware/viruses/etc?Hi Rob!
I use:
Adware SE Personal
Spybot - Search and Destroy
CCleaner
Tweak Now! Reg Cleaner
and Norton Internet Security

ive done that a few time when resieing the quick launch bar.

what it is, is one or your tool bars has kinda wraped it self around, i know that sounds weird..

You need to either turn off the offending tool bar or PULL it back to ware it should be, it may not be a case of Left or right but rather up and down

try pulling the move handles up and down, i just gone and messed up my tool bars. dang

Solve : Script to identify Static/Dynamic IP??

Answer»

Is it possible to have a VB script or something similar determine whether the machine on which it is ran has its CONNECTION to the internet through a dynamic or static IP address, and echo the result into a text file or something?

I don't have a problem or anything. I'm just curious. I SUPPOSE so, but it would be hard to cover all cases.

Case 1: PC CONNECTED to the internet through modem.  Check DHCP lease INFORMATION to determine whether IP is dynamic or static.

Case 2: PC connected to to internet VIA router.  Can determine is PC has dynamic IP on LAN, but would need to query router (or some external server) to determine if the LAN itself had a dynamic or static IP...

Case 3: More complicated network configuration; LAN segments connected by bridges, IP tunnels, etc.

Could be tricky.

You don't say what model the laptop is.   :-?  That would be helpful.

Does the laptop have a floppy drive and/or cdrom drive?

If a floppy, see if it will boot to a Windows 98 boot disk, get to the A:\ and type    c:\    then    DIR     That should give you the contents of the hard drive.  Post back with what you get.

Get a boot disk at:

http://www.bootdisk.com/

If a cdrom drive and you have a Windows 2000 Pro or XP boot to it (XP preferable as it has more drivers).

Okay, only one last problem and she's bootable.  I got it to read the WIN 95 setup, ran FDISK, got the hard drive all ready to be installed. Now, I got DISK 1 of the WIN 95 setup to go on, but the rest of the disks won't because it says the floppy disk needs to be formatted to 2 MBs or something like that.  How can I format them to that using Windows XP?  I knew how to on Windows 98, but it seems the tool doesn't work on WIN XP.
If you format the Windows 95 disks, the Windows 95 data on those disks will be destroyed. No, let me give an example.  I got the Windows 95 setup on a CD, but it has different Image files to copy the files needed to floppy disks.  When I try to copy disks 2-14, it says something about needing to compress the floppies to a larger size which I know can be done on WIN98, but not sure about XP. On Windows XP, right click the floppy drive, and click Compress. Compress it to the point where it gives you 2 megs, or whatever is specified upon decompressing.

(Or at least I think Windows XP has that)Microsoft came up with a special (?.udf?) format to prevent people from just copying Windows disks and CONTINUING to spread them to their friends. This is probably the issue you are having. This started with Microsoft WORD 6 for Windows, so that even predates Win95....which problem can easily be overcome by someone with a Linux box...Linux makes me happy!

Do you realize that 80 - 90% of the problems posted here could be avoided if people used Linux? Of course no software will fix failed hardware, but I have been keeping tabs on this. Quote

Solve : Modem settings?

Answer»

The modem on my Windows computer has gone dead, and has been for quite some time. This was originally caused by a malware program who, among other things, killed the modem so it could dial up long distance numbers. Now the malware problems are long gone, but the thing that never got fixed was the settings for the modem. The modem SPEAKER is SET to "on", and you can hear it for a split second when it starts dialing, but then it cuts dead.

I am certain that this can be fixed by a registry edit. I recently replaced a hard drive and after re-installing XP from scratch, the modem worked perfect. However, when I loaded my old registry backup, the same problem obviously occurs. So, does anyone know where in the registry I can RESET this. It's just one of those little things that BUGS you, you know? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

JamesWhat if you uninstall the drivers, reboot and reinstall it?

Solve : Please help! Very frustrated! XP install pro?

Answer»

okay.  so i downloaded a website template program from limewire.  opened it up, and all the sudden, screen went blank, my graphics on dektop became grainy, and all my folder and file icons on desktop were "highlighted" as if someone highlighted them to open them.  additionally, the computer ran slow etc etc.  i figured i had a virus and decided it was time to upgrade my 12 gig HD anyway.

so, i went out and bought a 120 g HD and went to install WIN XP PRO.  the cd booted up fine, but when it comes to loading the "acpi files," it keeps stopping and saying "acpi.sys file corrupted" must REBOOT.  i thought a new hard drive wouldn't have problems?  is something wrong with the motherboard perhaps??

so next i decided to run the win 98 bootdisk, then ran fdisk, then created FAT32, and am now in the process of FORMATTING the HD.  can anyone help me get passed this ACPI.sys problem?  i've read in other forums that it could be bad memory.  if that's the case, why would the memory have ran great before the web template download, then now all the sudden not be runnig properly?

i'm up in arms and a student who doesn't have the money to pay to get this fixed.

any help is much appreciated.Try going  into the computer BIOS and disabling ACPI there. The key to get there should be displayed on start up. What are the details of the machine-make/model, etc.

You should be able to boot with the XP CD and install from there.

FAT32 with the standard Win98SE boot disk is limited to 32 gigs per partition so you may end up with needing multiple drive letters to use the full hard drive space. you can work around this with the updated fdisk file. Other BIOS'es can limit the maximum hard drive usablel space. again, details of your machine would be helpful.

Here is a good link to read;

http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shtdwnse.phpmy machine is a compaq pentium lll 550.  how do i edit from my bios?

thanksupdate:

i've pulled out each memory stick and tried installing then with no luck.  now i've resorted to loading win 98 on the system and it's loading just fine?  i guess next i'll try to run fdisk, then format the drive after a successful win 98 install and see if it takes the win xp?So would that be a Deskpro EP or an EN or what?

You do not need to load WIndows 98 first to load XP, even with the upgrade version. But I guess you are already going down that path.

On that vintage model of Compaq F10 when you see the Compaq logo will get you into the Setup screens.

The memory sticks are probably not an issue here, unless they are  a new PURCHASE. How much memory total do you have installed?Have a Good look at your XP CD, is it Damaged

I might be The File IS Corrupt, and you need a Fresh CD , or maby use a CD Doctor on to remove scratcheshey guys.  thanks for the help.  okay so to answer a few of the questions.

at this point, i've installed taken out memory then tried install  without success.  ran the memsomething86 at bootup and it just ran and ran never stopping.  then tried installing xp from the cd fresh.  then tried installing it over fresh win 98 at which point it freezes.  now the computer is running win98 for which i can't even locate the *censored* video drivers and am now stuck with only 16 colors.  what a day!

one mentioned booting from the f10 screen.  that's cool, except once i boot there, i have not the first clue about what i need to do?  any help is much appreciated.  thanks.
i forgot to say that i doubt it's the cd because this:

when i run the win98 bootup disk and it's trying to install the necessary files, i get quick messages that fill the screen saying it "failed to install" a handfull of files, one being acpi.sys a few that are like acpi2dos.sys and acpi4dos, 8dos??  and a couple others.  i've read these all relate to cd-roms.  i've also tried installing the xp using three different cd-rom drives as well upon encountering this acpi.sys problem.

could the scpi problem be related to my previous problem with the 12 gig HD?  could it carry over to a new HD?Let's just get Windows 98 on there first and running. Download and run Everest Home and identify the video adapter, and then we can get drivers for that and anything else with an exclamation mark in Device Manager.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Belarc identifies what it knows is there (that is what drivers are installed) but Everest can tell you about the devices whether drivers are loaded or not.

The model number is a big TIP off for getting things from the HP/Compaq web site.thanks for the help.  i'm out of town for the weekend.  i'll try what you've mentioned when i get back in town tuesday.  thanks again for your help.OK. Let us know.  ok gx1, i got the video drivers working correctly.  the system still seems to be unstable.  it keeps crashing.  nevertheless, i keep rebooting and trying to get through this.

i last tried to install xp from the cd, but the "set up" program doesn't respond.  so that's where i'm stuck.  i guess i have an unstable install of 98, trying to unstably install xp?

any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

thx

Solve : automatic opening of programs pc 2000 xp?

Hi - my first post so here goes...am helping a blind and physically disabled (cannot MOVE fingers)friend learn to use a  computer ( pc 2000 xp) with follwing software: dragon 8 preferred, claroread plus 2.5 , windows explorer, outlook and Qulacom purevioce- I want to know if we can set up the computer so that once he has turned it on, the dragon software will automatically start- he needs to use mainly VIOCE commands to navigate  but because of limited finger/hand use ( He can only PRESS one key at a time) , it will be helpful if the VOICE command software was up and running once the computer has finished booting up - hope this makes sense- Am not sure if this requires a macro  or I need to do something else in the start up
many THANKS for your advice
seamonkeyCan you just put a link to the software in the Startup folder?  Start-->Programs-->Startup.  That should be all you need to do.Thankyou Robpemory- so simple - - it worked like magic. ..Phew..Got dragon under control ... now just trying to get claroread to behave grrrr back to the manufacturer..Great!

Solve : How do I increase Virtual memory??

Answer»

I've received an error message that the virtual memory is low and to increase it.  How do I do that?

Thanks!umm if i remember right that just means to many things are going on in the background or your running a program that is a resource hog.. try going to the task MANAGER and closing some of the processes.. and REPORT BACK to the post.. also can you describe your machine os ram cpu the cards ect. and one of the experts will be here shortly to analysis the topic..

unlovedwarriorYes we will need some specifics. All of that, plus has anyone been monkeying with the virtual memory settings? What version of Windows? How long since it was loaded? What spyware/virus protection is being used? You can use Task Manager (control+alt+del) to see the running processes.

If you reboot the machine does the warning go away? What were you doing when this started? How long has this been happening?Assuming you're running XP here's what you do:

Right click my computer
Select properties
Go to the Advanced tab
Click Settings under performance
Go to the Advanced tab
Click change

There are you're options, usually best to have it set to system managed SIZE but you can set it yourself if you want to. Just make sure that with whatever changes you make you click 'set' once you're done so they will take affect. Also if you've got more than one hard drive let my know because there is another WAY to improve the performance of your virtual memory.

Solve : corrupt partition?

Answer»

I have one drive (60gig hd) partitioned into approximately 40 (c) and 20 (d) drives.. i use d as a backup for digital photos, docs etc.. in case of a windows crash to prevent data loss, i was moving a few files from the c to the d drive when the computer powered off.. I was unable to restart the computer so i formated C and reinstalled windows xp pro, but i cant open the d drive, i get a popup that says drive not formated would you like to do so.. partition magic cannot view the drive either, i tried to copy the partition onto c to no avail, i also tried to merge the 2 to no avail (the ntfs versions are different)  and i have received a (ERROR 45, crc error in data) when trying anything with this partition, including viewing the properties in PMagic8.. i havent backed up my pictures in several months, so anything added recently is lost...

Please any help is appreciated..  Exactly what caused the computer to turn off?  Did you have power outage?  A thunderstorm?  Do you use a surge protector with your computer?

I gather that Windows does recognize D but willl not read it.  Is that right?

You said, "the ntfs versions are different".  If Windows XP was the original OS on that computer, I believe you would not have two different versions of NTFS.  And, even if you did, I believe that should not be a problem.

Have you tried running chkdsk on D?  Under properties does it show the file type as RAW?  You can Google for issues with that. I have seen this FAR too often with the wonderful NTFS file system so I personally don't use it. I am sure this is what is involved with your case.

I would suggest a Linux live CD. You have to burn the file as an ISO with Nero, etc., and then reboot the machine with it in the first CD drive. If you can see the files, copy them to a CDRW, a pen drive, across a network, etc. to save them as you will not be able to write tto NTFS partitions. I would recommend SLAX for this. It is simple, elegant, and has all the tools you will need.

not sure on power outage, not a storm just a second blink of no electricity then back on.. windows does "see" d but wont read it

partition magic calls the version of ntfs on d as 0.0.. its reporting as different versions but i think thats a sympton, not the actual problem.. couldnt through windows but PMagic did let me chkdsk.. still beating my HEAD on the wall... dont know anything about linux for other solution.. time to maybe try that...
A Live CD does just that - it runs from a CD with nothing being written to a hard drive. It will even run in a machine with no hard drive attached! Of course it runs a little slower than other OS'es because it is not installed on a hard drive, but it is usable.  currently downloading it to try.. but if the volume is corrupt or something similair will i stll have access to the contents to copy them back to C?You won't be any worse off than you are now.  I've just started to explore Linux; I'm still very MUCH a Linux newbie.  Since Linux comes in different flavors, I'll mention the one I've recently downloaded and have been focusing on, and I believe it can be used in the Live CD mode that GX1_MAN is talking about.  GX1_MAN, if you think another version of Linux would better suit his PURPOSE, please feel free to post it.

The version I'm talking about is [highlight]Ubuntu[/highlight].  At this point, I have downloaded it and created a bootable CD.  I have not yet tried running it in live mode, or installing it on a hard drive.  Here's a reference I used: Downloading and burning an ISO of Ubuntu.  Other references: Downloading and burning an ISO of Ubuntu, and Installing Ubuntu Linux!.  And, of course, there are probably many more if you Google Ubuntu.  I also found a very active Ubuntu forum at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/; I have already used it.

dazma, to avoid problems like this in the future, buy a UPS for your computer.  It will keep your computer running during a power interruption until you can do a proper shutdown, or the UPS software can automatically do a proper shutdown if you're away from the computer.

Here's one I have had for about 3 1/2 years: APC Surge Protector with 500VA Battery Backup.  I just replaced the battey in it a few months ago.Ubuntu is fine and cocmes in live and install flavors. SLAX is smaller and quicker for systems with unknown resources and works wonderfully. Knoppix is probably the best at hardware detection of the Live ones. Linspire is the most Windows like, but requires more system resources.GX1Man thanx for the Slax info...

Okay, GUYS!! New problem (still having the old as well). Clicking on links inside browser windows, emails, programs, etc as well as typing addresses in the address bar of the browser - this action will open the browser, but does NOT call the link!!! However, if I open a 'favorite', it does open the link. Is there such a thing as a mentally challenged computer? I believe I have one!! UGH!! :-?This computer SEEMS to have a lot of issues!

Because I don't want to fish through all of the old posts, do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall with? What version? That fixes most Windows problems for a while. What is the computer make/model and what are the specifics - CPU, RAM, hard drives, optical drives, etc.I have searched Google. I have used XP's help center. I have searched MSKB. EVERY time I shut down or reboot my computer (even software initiated), the system freezes on the "Windows is shutting down..." screen. Must manually shut down which, 9 times out of 10, requires the system to run scandisk at next boot. New system, AMD Athlon 64 3200, PCIe Nvidia video card, 160gb SATA main drive, 1GB DDR 3200/400, mobo is BioStar NF4ST-A9, usb keyboard and mouse, gblan, 19" LCD monitor with DVI CONNECTION, 450w PS. Not overclocked, not overheating, all drivers up to date, no conflicts, Win XP SP2 with all updates, and YES, a REAL Windows cd. I built the computer or at least put the components together. And as I recall from PREVIOUS posts it has never been totally normal?Correct. Unfortunately.Which browser ? ?
Have you tried another one to SEE if the same condition persists ? ?

Solve : Sony Vaio Giga Pocket - missing operating system?

Answer»

This is where I am now:  Windows XP Home Edition --  Pentium 4

1. Had slave hard drive installed - brought it home.

2. Installed Ghost 10.0 on primary c: partition

3. Cloned primary to slave drive  (at least, so I thought)

4. Tried to boot up with floppy saved from Ghost as well as recovery cd from  Ghost.

5.  System will not boot but will allow me to see the files on the d: partition of the primary.

6.  Get message from Ghost that says no recovery point on computer.

7.  Cannot see any files on slave drive.

8.  Called Symantec and they said use Sony recovery disk to reload OS because without Ghost disks all I get is black screen with message "missing operating system" on boot attempts.

9.  Called Sony and they said order Sony recovery kit.  Online chat with Sony seemed POINTLESS. I tried to boot from recovery wizard as Sony INSTRUCTED but didn't happen.  They said order cd recovery kit and call DriveSavers to save data -- they want left arm and right leg (not willing to hop around).

10.  Checked Bios and CMOS and all is well.

11. Tried to boot from XP Pro Upgrade cd that I had bought for now dead and buried pc. Get message to hit "r" to go to recovery.

12.  Recovery asks for me to type first option but will not accept any choice other than "1" and that gets me nowhere.  So researched internet from networked computer to find this site.

13. Received Sony recovery disk but don't want to use it until I can find out
if I can save all data, email, etc. on c: drive.

14. Get "missing operating system" upon boot. Almost ready to hop!!.

15. Prefer not to hop - what next??see if u can repair the O.S. by inserting the windows cd and selecting repair.
It sounds like you are looking at a Windows reinstall, but check a few things.

Can you get to Safe Mode (F8 at boot before the WIndows logo)? From there can you do a system restore to a point before all of this?

The next best thing would be to download and burn as an ISO with Nero, etc. a Linux Lice CD. Boot with that and backup your data files to  another drive, across a network, to a CDRW, etc. and then reinstall Windows fromwhatever source you have.

This is my favorite for these cases:

http://www.slax.org/download.php

It will not write anything to your hard drive by running so it is entirely safe for your data! It is free also.  i think you may have Cloned your Slave to your Primary , and over wrote your FAT table, if you did this and you want to recover any thing you will NEED to use a data recovery Tool , like RStudio,

i would also try what GXMan Said a use a Linux live disk

and i would Use the XP Recovery Console (its like DOS for XP/Ntfs) and run FIXBOOT and FIXMBR

And also i would Feel bad for buying a Vaio     :-?

I want to try to use the operating system on another computer with XP Home Edition in order to try to save the files on the Sony.  I have been told to slave the Sony drive to another computer and try to save files that way.  Any suggestions or tips??  I have never done this before but would like to know if there are any cautions or tips.  Thanks for all of the suggestions to this point.

Once I save the files I'm going to format the drive and start again. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]Here's a lot of information. Read through it and ask questions then. As this has all been well written, there's no need to type it in again:

Solve : Error in Event Viewer (Windows XP)?

Answer»

In my ongoing effort by trial-and-error to solve an hardware installation problem (that, from all evidence, points to being XP-related rather than physical), I chanced on the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools (this is Windows XP Home Edition w/all Service Packs and hotfixes loaded).
Wherever an Error appears in the log that references the host controller driver of the problem hardware DEVICE, an second Error appears above it in the list.* This Error reads, "The A4SII300 service failed to start due to the following error:  The system cannot find the file specified."  *This is the list under System in Event Viewer and source is shown as:  Service Control Manager.
It would seem to me that if I can obtain the file specified (A4SII300.SYS -- as found by a search of the Registry), then I would just copy it from a floppy to the path in the problem machine and then the Error msg would not reappear and the hardware device problem might even be solved.  I have DONE a search for this file A4SII300.SYS (with hidden files option) and it's not there.  I've searched my main computer running Windows XP Professional Edition and it's not on that computer either.
The path shown for A4SII300.SYS in the Registry is:  \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\A4SII300.SYS
I've searched the Internet for any information pertaining to this file, and it is sparse. There are references to it being: (autostart), but nothing beyond that that pertains to the file missing from a System.
Can anyone shed any light on this topic?  Is this A4SII300.SYS file something that I have to extract from a CAB?  (I've extracted from CABs before in Windows 98SE -- but not XP -- and it's a whole new learning experience whenever I've attempted it.)Well all I can come up with is maybe an sfc /scannow to see if the file gets replaced. Unfortunately that's about all I can come up with right now. And even that's a log shot. I'll ask around at work tomorrow and see if anyone's got any ideas.     Thank you for such a fast reply. I will continue working on this mystery plus several more. In the meantime, I have also discovered through further Internet research that the .SYS file in question may be related to scanner issues (which, if true, would preclude its being related to the No. 1. problem which remains installing a particular hardware device -- covered in another post on this Forum).
Several months ago I did attempt to install an 8-year old Mustek scanner to this computer. That was a nutty thing to do since I knew that the scanner was built when Windows 3.1 was still being used (hence it would be obsolete for XP). And, of course, the scanner didn't work.
This is all a learning situation and I don't mind trial-and-error as I have the patience and I don't have the big bucks for professional computer repair.
Do you have a real Windows CD to do a reinstall if that is necessary to solve all of these woes?     This is a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop that came with Windows ME pre-installed (but included the CD). Later, I installed the XP Home Edition upgrade (purchased the CD).
I've explored the possibility of uninstalling the XP and going back to ME but the option does not appear in Add/Remove Programs (which may indicate an incomplete install of XP).  Microsoft Support gives a method to use at the Command Prompt but that procedure is halted by a msg having to do with something not being registered (did that last week, so I don't have that msg handy to quote here).
For now, within 4 days of when my husband is going to need to take this laptop on a business trip, it is working beautifully for the purpose for which he needs it (we wanted WiFi capability for use in the hotel).  I've achieved that purpose.
The various posts that I've placed on this board in the last 3 days have to do with what I've discovered about the state of the laptop ALONG the way.  I can give up the laptop for his use and he'll be WiFi-ing at 12Mbps on a USB 1.1 port instead of 480Mbps on a USB 2.0 port which was my OBJECTIVE that started all this troubleshooting.  He's ok with the slower speed (I'm not).  Then, I'll get back to resolving all these problems (with the help of this fine forum?) next week. How were you going to get to USB 2 on that machine?     Well, since you asked, I have other posts on this Forum which, in my mind at least, all relate to the overall quandry of upgrading to USB 2.0 port.  For history, please see my post titled "Device Manager not recognizing new hardware" in this same form (Microsoft/Microsoft Windows) which, as I post this msg, is flagged as "Yesterday 11:57:35".
(This Forum needs ID#'s for its threads.)  The posts at that subject title answer your question re USB 2.0 (you must know, evidently, that this Dell laptop came with only one USB 1.0 (or 1.0?) port).
Along the way, in attempting to solve the problem as to why the Type II slots do not accept the USB 2.0 PC card, I've come upon the other glitches (such as the one in this post about the Event Viewer) that I've questioned in this forum.
I'm so far along in figuring this out that I'm almost at where I will be willing to open up the laptop to see if the power leads to the slots in the PCI cage are loose (see original post under "Device Manager" title for why I might be drawing this conclusion.  As I do not like the idea of opening a squashed-flat computer -- which is what a laptop is -- I have been doing everything I can to workaround that (for me) drastic option.  If I were dealing with a regulard desktop, no problem, been there done that.
Thank you for pursuing this matter with me. Perhaps you might want to look at that post about "Device Manager" and would have some further insigts.Well, I don't wish to go fishing up threads, but a laptop with USB 1 ports has no device area (like a PCI card slot in a real computer) to install anything to enable it. There are some after market PCMCIA to USB adapters, but I don't know if they are reliable and certainly you would not appear to have room for a wireless card at the same time. Perhaps you could jerryrig a PCMCIA Card --> Usb 2 converter----> USB2 modem device, but that seems a long way around. The speed at which you are now receiving should be adequate for communication and a machine that old is obviously not a high end GAMING platform. Please help me if I'm missing something.     This Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop (bought new by me 5 years ago and barely used at all) has not one, but two, Type II PC slots that accept both 16-bit PC cards and 32-bit cardbus cards.  My objective is to correctly install a Belkin USB 2.0 Notebook Card Model FU52222.  This card has two USB 2.0 ports.  Then I could move the Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter (which has a USB cable) off the Dell onboard USB 1.1 port and achieve maximum transfer rate by having the Linksys running on the Belkin card.
All very do-able.  I'll get there.  Husband is content to use lower signal thru USB 1.1 port for now.  Thank you for your interest.I'll hope with you that it works and the speed increase was worth it.

I got a PCMCIA wireless G card that works great for <$20. The only PCMCIA cards I have seen with USB 2 were more than that.

Solve : Windows XP recovery problem?

Answer»

My friend's computer wont boot up theres a error message thats says something like: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

and tells him to insert his Windows XP startup cd and hit "R"

But he doesnt have one! He doesnt have any of the windows cds. He's running windows xp pro. Is there anything he can do at all!?? before trying to connect microsoft and send him a new cd if they even canHe got XP Pro on a computer with no restore CD? What maker is that? Microsoft will not help if that is an OEM product. They provide no support for those. He will have to contact the computer maker.

He will need to have a CD to do this repair.  He did try to contact the computer maker, but the guy said hes "out of that business" he was working at a toll booth, werid story. Anyways theres NOTHING he can do with out cd.

If he bought one of the update cds, that have like SP2 on it, will that work, or will it do nothing? In the end he is going to need a legitimate version of Windows, and that probably wasn't if "some guy" sold it to him. Does he have a COA STICKER on the machine? That is a good tipoff.

If he gets the cheaper "upgrade" version he will have to have proof of a prior qualifying version of Windows to install. He could get an OEM copy for $100+, but there are limitations on that as well - no support, an interesting EULA, etc.

You might try someone else's "real" one to see if that gets you over the immediate crisis. If you can get into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) you could try a System Restore, but no guarantees on that.

Good luck!   Quote

I dont understand what "try someone else's real one" means? I'm running LEGAL windows xp home, not pro though. Is there anything i can do to help, like make a boot cd? If say i updated to xp pro? and i guess he tried to get into safe mode but it didnt workTry someone else's real XP Pro CD. I don't know if home will work, or if you really want to, and there is some discussion about incompatible versions (home vs. pro) and this generating many more problems.

Generally you CANNOT repair home with a pro CD, because the FILES they contain are different. Activation issues seem to be common as well. I suspect the opposite is true as well.

thanks, so if he cant get a hold of a xp pro cd, theres nothing he can do then?

i mean, even if it involves dumping his memory and have a clean slate with everything gone, he still wants to use his computerYou can always buy a real XP CD and load that on. No problems there except the CAVEATS as listed above.

If you want to save any data files before formatting (as you should prior to this install) let me know for some tips, and provide the specs of the machine.okIf you do manage to get you're hands on an XP CD what you want to do is boot into the recovery console and then follow these instructions. It'll take care of the problem and there won't be any data LOSS.

Solve : Bizzare. Keeps trying to install Microsoft Money?

Answer»

Ok, so I was trying to free up space on my hard drive, and I DELETED one of the programs that came with my computer: Microsoft Money. Now, everytime I open a windows application (control panel, my computer, etc.) It tries to reinstall it, and I have to hit cancel a few times before it will continue. It's REALLY annoying and quite bizzare. I've EVEN let it go a few times, thinking I'd rather just have Money on here then have to deal with this, but then it can't install it because it can't find the install files.
Any IDEAS on how to get it to stop?
I've attached a screenshot of what it does when I click on "my computer". When I hit cancel it pops up again, and then again, and then finally lets me into my computer after three cancels.Did you uninstall Money via the Add or Remove Programs panel, or some other way?  Does Money still APPEAR in your Add or Remove Programs panel?

I suggest trying CCleaner as a first step.  It's a disk cleanup tool and does some registry cleaning, although it's registry cleaning is not as aggressive as other registry cleaners.  Uncheck to box for Yahoo toolbar; you'll see this OPTION soon after starting to install CCleaner.

Note that CCleaner has it's own utility, under Tools, Uninstall, to remove programs.  Out of curiosity, I'd also look there, before running CCleaner's Issues scan, to see whether it shows Money as an installed program. If it does, then use that panel to uninstall Money.

Solve : Device Manager not recognizing new hardware?

Answer»

Specs: Dell Inspiron 4000 notebook (circa year 2001), Pentium III, 750MHz, 512MB RAM, Windows XP upgrade over original Windows ME, all XP Service Packs and hotfixes installed. Have two Type II PC card slots that accept 32-bit cardbus card. Used to have a 10/10000 NIC card. The card was bent while in the slot. I took the card out and threw it away (shouldn't have done that, but that was months ago).

Now I want to install a USB 2.0 cardbus card in one of these slots (the kind w/2 USB ports) since the notebook came installed only with one USB 1.1 port (and I want more transfer speed for a Linksys hi-speed USB network adapter that I use on the 1.1 port). Using the Type II PC slot that did not have the damaged 10/10000 card in it, I have tried installing the following new items: a Netgear wireless card, a Keyspan 2.0 USB card, and a Belkin 2.0 Notebook Card. None of these items is recognized in Device Manager. I've abandoned the Netgear card since I discovered the Linksys product. I've RETURNED the Keyspan card to Dell for credit. I've tried everything I can think of with the Belkin card and still no go.

When the card (any of these mentioned) is placed in the slot and then removed after awhile, the card is hot, which tells me that the PCI cage has power. In Device manager, the host controllers for each of these Type II slots is SHOWN as working properly. I tried the Update Driver feature on each (with a connection to Windows Update on-line) and no later driver was found. I notice that IRQ 9 is shared by the Type II slots, also the USB port, PLUS something else, but research tells me that this is the norm. Also: Windows sound for Connect Device (I assume) is audible when the card is inserted in Type II slot. There are many many more THINGS that I have done to install this Belkin card (too much to list here).

What I haven't done is contact Belkin or Dell. Experience tells me that I will get the run-around at best and that they will tell me to do everything I've already done. My object in all this: To go from 12Mbbps MAX transfer rate on the USB 1.1 port to up to 480Mbbps if I can use the Linksys USB network adapter in the USB 2.0 Notebook card instead. 2nd objective: To not let these Type II slots go unused just because of some glitch that can be solved.

I apologize for this length. (I've also reposted on the much-appreciated advice that I break this msg into paragraphs (didn't know I could LOL). I tried to mince words and just give the facts as I know them. Awaiting any advice or insight that an expert can give me. Thank you in advance. If you could edit or re-write your message, breaking it down into paragraphs, it would be much easier to read and comprehend.  I'm sure I'm not the only person who looks at a message with one gigantic paragraph, such as yours, and decides to not take the time to try to decipher it.Any install CDs with the card(s)?     The Belkin USB 2.0 Notebook Card F5U222 came with a CD containing the driver, which installed to the appropriate folder.  When the card was not recognized automatically by Windows XP nor by going through the Add Hardware wizard, I went to Belkin's website and downloaded the later version of the driver (noting that the CD driver version date was from 2003 and the one on the website is from July 2005).  The newer driver replaced the CD driver in the Windows file (I can tell that by the date in Properties).

Solve : Device2570(ProcesTo I/O Controller ResourceConflic?

Answer»

Hello,

My configuration: P4 (2.66 GHz/512MB/533 MHz) with the i865PE and ICH5R chipsets (installed with Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 6.3.0.1007); Win98se (fully updated).

The automatic setting option was used throughout hardware installation.

The only disturbing factor is the following resource conflict, reported from the very beginning by Device Manager:
"Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to I/O Controller - 2570"
'This device CAUSES resource conflict (Code 15)'  -  'this memory range is used by Intel 82801 PCI Bridge - 244E'.

Both devices - '2570' and '2571' have been installed with the aid of the same INF file (865.inf), I suppose and one of them doesn't cause conflicts with the PCI Bridge 244E and the other does.

My questions are:
- Can the '2570' device function correctly without having memory range assigned, or assigned improperly?
- Does '2570' really need memory assigned?

Thanks,
AndrewB
What computer or motherboard make/model? What operating system? Where did you get these .inf files?Motherboard: Asus P4P800 Deluxe
The rest of the requested info is already in the first 2 lines of my original post:
Win98se & Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility 6.3.0.1007.

Please note that this problem can be seen as more GENERAL (I mean Windows version- and Intel P4- independent). So you could answer the following question:
Does Intel P4 to I/O controller need memory assignment at all?
You need the correct motherboard chipset drivers to assign this. You still didn't say where you got what you are using but this is all that is listed on the ASUS site for that board. If you got them from Intel or some other site you may want to check these out:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Does the board work correctly, aside from the issue shown in Device Manager? Some boards never do get this resolved but they function normally. Quote

assuming this thing is accurate, you have the equvilant of 924 us dollars, if you have a full 500 euros to spend, which, should be enough to make a great rig, you can build a 939 64 bit system for about 500 bucks, with everything

Your "multitasking" is out of hand Dead_reckon. You are responding to an issue in another section.

as i said, it is early, and i only got about 6 or 7 hours of sleep last night, but i DID realize that i was in the wrong tab about the time i hit alt s... i think i will fetch more coffee now, PREVENT future errors...Generally, 8xx.inf files are generated by Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. My 865.inf file was generated by the last version of this utility for Win98se, i.e. 6.3.0.1007, which I downloaded directly from Intel.
The board chipset driver from Asus also contains the original installation utility of Intel, but one version earlier, as this motherboard is no longer produced. Asus encourages, of course, upgrading to the newest one. The problem is definitely not there and I'm familiar with Asus Support section.

My board has no problems with this conflict!

This was so striking to me that I decided to ask about it at several computer shops, but without success. Therefore I checked Device Manager info about this device on several different computers at these shops - with different brand motherboards and various Intel chipsets. There was striking consistency of the info concerning Processor to I/O Controller, namely they didn't assign any memory for the device. Therefore, I generalized my question a bit, assuming that it's quiet likely that such an assignment isn't necessary at all for correct functioning of this device, but understand that this question isn't so trivial.

Solve : Cannot load safe mode on XP?

Answer»

when I hit f8, it starts to text down the screen and stops at this line
"Multi(0)disk0rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32\giveio.sys"??

Anyone know what is happening?  I ran a virus CHECK but found nothing? It sounds like your boot.ini file is corrupted for some reason. What happened prior to this? Do you have multiple operating systems involved? Why were you trying to get to Safe Mode? I hope you have a real XP CD to fix this, rather than a restore disc of some sort.

In any case TRY rebuilding the boot.ini file

http://www.thpc.info/dual/bootcfg.html

If you only have a restore disc you may be looking at a RELOAD of Windows. :-?Thanks for your reply....I only have one os loaded (xp) and the computer only came with restore FILES on partion d:...what a crock huh?  I may have done something wrong when i repartioned c: to make d: have more free space as it was just large enough to hold the restore files.  I used Partion magic but I really don't think that would be a problem.   Thanks for your help..I'll keep trying :-/1: Why did you try to make D: Bigger, it was only big enough to hold the Recovery Stuff because thats all it was intended to do.

2: Doesn't Partition Magic give you a waring when you try to resize a partition that has a boot record?

I think you may have broken your XP boot Record, but as far as i know those PCs come with customised boot record to Handel Automated System Restores.

Get your hands on a Real XP disk , boot the disk and attempt a Repair install.

Also If you know how use the Recovery Console to run "fixboot.exe" and see if that fixes it fixmbr.exe might be needed as well Quote

Well that is a really important "rest of the story". I think you need to get an XP CD to try and fix it as SPECIFIED above.   Do you have a friend with one?

The lesson here is that Partition Magic is great, when it works. It is NOT foolproof, as you have found, and any kind of disk management tool has the possibility of losing your data,

Solve : Highlighted Tabs?

Answer»

Hi am i having probelems with the bottom TABS of windows, they are always
highlighted (screenshot- http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/1857/mypc0gw.png)

I have to click on this tabs multiple times when they become highlighted, i do
not know how to make them not do this, could you give me any type of solution so
i can get rid of this promlem (when i click on sumthing i want to to do it
straight away, i have to click these tabs about 3 or 4 times before they come
back up and sometimes it doesnt even come up then i have to minimize everthing
to see what i want/need to see)Not sure what the problem is, but I can tell you that excessive "clicking" will only slow the process. Every time you click, you're sending a command to the processor. The more clicks, the more commands, the longer time frame for the system to catch up with you.Programs that load up in the background will always load with highlighted tabs like this; usually they revert to normal the FIRST time you click on them (bring them to the foreground).  You should only need to click on them once, and ech program should not revert to that highlighted look (unless you close and reopen later).

If this does not accurately decribe your problem, perhaps you could PROVIDE a few more details.  How long has this been HAPPENING?  Have you made any changes?  Etc.

The problem started after RUNNING all the windows updates.I've actually heard of this happening though I'm not quite sure of the cause. Check msconfig(Start -> Run -> msconfig) for any startup entries that might cause this. If nothing is showing up there you could also check startup's using a program called autoruns from Sysinternals. It shows all startup ITEMS and files there. Solve : Creating your own XP CD?

Answer»

Another question from rlprlp:  My HP Pavilion came with XP pre-installed.  The recovery disk (which I had to make myself FOLLOWING the instructions of a special wizard) has all the garbage from Blockbuster Online to Matchmaker.com to you name it!  I tried to google this, but had no luck.  Close, but not quite.  Is there a way that I can make my own CD, or better yet, being that I have a valid product code, can I get one from Microsoft? (For a nominal S&H fee.)  Don't need it; all is well.I only want it for "just in case".  It TOOK one heck of a long time to get rid of all that crud...  You are always better off with a real Windows CD. I doubt Microsoft will HELP since what you have is an OEM copy and they don't even provide support for that! Contact HP. You cannot make your own CD.That's what I wanted to hear (you know what I mean!).  I'll stop wasting my time trying to research the idea, except to see if HP may be willing to provide me with one.  Thanks, GX1 ! Quote

So, he can not use the slipstreaming technique?
He does not have a real XP CD to start  with. That is the problem. You can't slipstream what you do not have.   Apparently, he has a Recovery partition on his hard drive.  And, I gather he created a CD from that.  This would be a CD that could be used to format his hard drive and reinstall Windows.  Right?  So, I was wondering whether there's any way for owners of such computers to use slipstreaming to create a system CD.

I spent some time researching the slipstreaming technique months ago, and, I admit, as I recall, it was usually described as applying to a situation where the computer owner has a Windows XP (SP1) CD and wants to create a Windows XP SP2 CD.  What that creates is a restore CD, not a Windows CD. Two entirely different products.Generally an OEM computer has to come with the I386 folder some where on the computer, from this you can make an XP CD , but it wont be bootable , unless you add a boot partition to it, using Nero or such to add a DOS boot loader, if you have the Windows OPK tools  you can also make a XP CD that will boot and you can customise it so it has drivers and user settings already set up. how ever only OEM distributors get this set i have it becase i was an OEM Distributer also to make your own OEM Cd you Need a Real CD frist or the OPK tools dont workBut as I said, he can't do it.  Also the restore partitions are usually, well at least for dell anyways, just an image and they don't format the drive at all. They pretty much just delete everything and then throw the image down overtop. So it'd be the same as trying to make an XP cd from an already installed OS.I made no mention of a restore Partition, and also on dell machines they do Copy the 1386 folder on to your C:\ drive that way you can still install the extra windows components you may want or need, or do a reinstall SANS diskI think RapedApe stated before he actually worked for Dell somewhere in some capacity. Perhaps he would elaborate.

Solve : Icon will not delete?

Answer»

I get this when I try to delete the "beatcrart" icon from my desktop.

System Info:
Windows XP home addition, SP1
Intel celeron 2.70GHz
760 MB of RAM

hmmm this probably isnt the reason , but might as well ask for trail and error sakes....ur not by any chance SEEDING it via a bittorent client are u??

also, could u please post a pic of ur running processes? (CTRL+ALT+DEL>processes tab)

BTW... did u just do a clean install? cause i MEAN thats one BARREN destop! try alt n control, delete and find the process and kill it....then remove it from your desktop..if that dont work then just reboot..and try to remove it from the desktopI have tryed that, and homer I like to keep my desktop clean. so u have looked over ur running processes list and its not there? No its not there.hmmm might be malware related. download Hijack This and post a log here.

u can download hijack this from hereNo luck with that.no luck with what??? u didnt post a log...My knowledge of Windows is limited but what occurs to me in reading your post is that if you were to invoke the MSDos command prompt (Start – Run – CMD – Enter) and then go to the desktop subdirectory where the icon file is located and you were to delete the icon file using the MSDos delete command (Del XYZ.ICO Enter, wouldn’t this work? That wouldn't work either. The only way that just deleting it MIGHT work is by typing this

Code: [Select]del filename.ext -y
This will auto-yes and is the same thing as holding the shift key when deleting. It deletes and skips the recycle bin, just gone. However, your best option for deleting the file would be this

Code: [Select]CACLS filename.ext /p guest:n
Then reboot the machine and use the previous line of code to remove the file. If that doesn't work lemme know and I'll find something else for ya. One more thing, it doesn't look like an icon as those usually have the little arrow in the BOTTOM left corner like firefox so you might wanna find out what the extension is before continuing(sp?) with the commands. If you're not sure of the extension then after you bring up the command prompt just type 'dir' and press enter. That'll bring up the filename and the extension. Good Luck [smiley=thumbsup.gif]Monty, try this.... google for killbox and run it, type the locatian of the filename and click on the red 'x', this will delete your file Sorry, didn't work    It say's that the "this file does not seem to exist"
HELP!It saying the file does not exist means you're not typing in the right extension. Open up the command prompt and type 'dir' then enter and it will give you the proper extension. Then try with that. I'm gonna guess it's an exe so...

Code: [Select]cacls beatcraft.exe /p guest:n
If I'm wrong and it's not an exe file then just replace 'exe' with whatever the extension really is. Afterwards just reboot and then open a command prompt and type

Code: [Select]del beatcraft.exe -y
This, of course, will only work if I guessed the right extension. If you can't figure out how to make this work properly then try blackberry's idea. Killbox is pretty sweet and should handle this file as well. When I try to open it it say's that it NOT a valid Win32 Application.

Solve : Password Protected Folders?

Answer»

:-?

OKAY here's the story,

My laptop STOPED working so I removed the hard-drive and connected it to another laptop (external ENCLOSURE) to get to my files.

The problem is that one of two windows-logins was password protected.  So when I go to 'Documents & Settings' I CAN access the files on the UN-protected Login.  But when I try to get into the LOGIN that was password protected, it tells me 'ACCESS DENIED'.

I know the password but how do I use the password?  How do I access the files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

NewtleFirst you have to login as ADMINISTRATOR and then TAKE ownership of the files:

Solve : Windows XP slow to respond after idle time?

Answer»

After sitting idle (with or WITHOUT a screen SAVER on) it takes 4 minutes and 30 seconds for my computer to respond. This started about three days ago and seems to occur when I've been AWAY for 10 minutes or more. The cursor will move, and if I click on icons or open windows, the action will eventually be taken. The lag time has been increasing; at first, it was only about a minute. I haven't downloaded anything lately, and the temperature is fine. I checked the task manager afterwards, and nothing unusual seems to be running. Has anyone had this problem, and do you have any suggestions? I'm running Windows XP Pro 5.1 on a 1533 Mhz PC.What are you using for malware protection? You should also check your running processes with task manager, but I bet you have malware issues.I have Ad-Aware SE and just tried running the MS Windows Beta "clean-up"- both report no problems.I just checked the task manager again. CPU time is about 1%, PF Usage is STEADY at 378 MB, the system idle is AROUND 98, and no unusual processes are listed.

Solve : Allow all folders to use Filmstrip view?

Answer»

I'd like to be able to view as a FILMSTRIP in explorer WITHOUT changing the folder type.  Anyone know how this might be possible?

I searched through the registry and didn't find anything.  Did find the value "FolderType" and the datas "Document," "PhotoAlbum," etc, but it didn't help.

Ideas? You will need to be a LOT more specific about your equipment, software and what you are trying to accomplish. TAKE your time and include all of the NECESSARY information. I just can't make anything of this.equipment...software....
Quote

I'd like to be able to view as a filmstrip in explorer...

Right Click -> View -> Filmstrip

It isn't always there.  If the folder has a few images in it, it's usually there.  I'm a PHOTOGRAPHER, which means I have folders full of photos.  Sometimes there are enough images there that explorer doesn't like to give me the option of viewing as a filmstrip, which means I have to set the folder type to a photo album.  (Right Click Folder -> Properties -> Customize)

That's about as specific as it gets...

Solve : laptop compaq presario?

Answer»

whenever i start up the computer it gives me the compaq screen the TELLS me " no operating system found" i can get to a HELP  screen that is no help. i have run a system registry and a disk scan. it tells me all is well, but cannot find the os. how is this possible? what do i do?well try to remove the floppy if there is one.. and then reboot w/o the floppy...thats the most CASES,other then that ....press f8 on boot up...go into safe mode.....and see if u can log onto your comp that way...What happened prior to this? Safe Mode MAY be helpful if you can get there, but no operating system found can indicate a bad hard drive or (LESS likely) a controller failure, or other things.

Please post a LOT of information about the machine.

Solve : PC freezes after going into Safe Mode?

Answer»

my computer got virus (Brave Sentry) last night, and I ran the Spybot and cleaned it. After I restarted the PC, it told me error on disk or something, so I forcely shut it down, and I turned it on again. Because the Window can't start properly, the screen asking if want to use Safe Mode APPEARED. So I went into Safe Mode, but nothing happened, all black screen; the red light is not flashing, the num lock freezes, not even noise from hard drive. Can anyone please help me? how can I get it fixed? or is it just dead? how about the data in hard drive? all gone?  Personally, I'd recommend that you use the "Start From last Known Good Configuration" option first. This is (usually) done by pressing a certain function button at the computer boot-up, though what button that is varies with the different computers, I believe.

Even so, I suggest you try that. There might be a better solution, though, so you might want to hold off until someone with a bit more computer authority than me can check this thread, though this process is teh first to IMMEDIATELY come to mind in terms of minimizing data-loss is Safe Mode will not work.thanks for your suggestion, though I am not quite sure which bottons to press. But all keys are not responding after choosing either Safe Mode or the regualr Window, not even ctrl+alt+delete..... :-/
or is there anything I can change in the BIOS menu? I can get in there by pressing delete when it first starts.Eh, messing with the BIOs isn't remotely my area of knowledgeability, so you'd have to wait for someone else on that, unfortunately.  :-/

However the process I suggested isn't performed while in Safe Mode, but rather as an alternative choice for going into safe mode. What type of computer do you have, specifically (OS, brand, etc)?my PC is custom built...
I can choose not goint to safe mode, just the regular window, but the result is the same, still get black screen.....HM...Well, what about the O.S.? Windows XP, 2000, 98...?it's XP, sorry I thought I mentioned it in my first post. well let this be known spybot search and destroy does nothing...........it might find the errors but does not fix them......and its for adware and spyware not virus's ...........maybe u got a boot virus some how......anyways ..u can try this ..click start in the run command type in msconfig .... in the start up tab..uncheck any unknown programs u dont know..click apply then exit w/o rebooting............. for anti virus check out http://avast.com its free for 90 days or what not its a simple program but most users will use avg its your choicehttp://www.grisoft.com/doc/trial/lng/us/tpl/tpl01thanks spazz, but the PC is just sitting on the black screen after I choose Safe Mode, nothing happens. or is there a way that can get me into a place where I can click "Start"? I thought the machine did not run. How is this relevant?

Come on people, get a grip. If you don't have a reasonable solution, and can't communicate without ebonics (u no whut i mean)....and that.....which I guess passes for PUNCTUATION..... just pass.   Sometimes safe mode takes a very long time to load. (Don't ask me why, it should be fast)
Are you giving it a good 5 minutes?yes, Fed. I waited at least for 20 min. but nothing happened... is it possible that all my data are gone? In your first post you mentioned 'error on disk', you should test your HD.
Do you have a genuine XP disk?how can I test my HD? should I take it out and bring it to a store? and should I just install the XP again? that way all the data in HD will be gone, right? :-? Quote
yes, Fed. I waited at least for 20 min. but nothing happened... is it possible that all my data are gone?

It's not sure whether or not all of your data will have to be erased. At the moment, the data should still be on there, and if there is an immediate work-around for it, then no, your data will not be lost, but if there's not a quick fix for it, be aware that you may lose some data or have to restore, which will erase all the data on there. The best thing to do is to back-up new files CONSTANTLY. You can't over-stress doing this. Buy a pack of blank CD-Rs and back-up at least once every two weeks to a month. Computers are not invincible by any means, and you'll feel bad when you've acquired a lot of new data that you haven't backed up and your computer suddenly requires restoration.

However, no. None of your data should be lost yet, but whether or not you will have to lose it remains to be known.

Solve : Hide apps?

Answer»

Hi, what I WANT to do is HIDE a windows XP application, I mean do something to it so that it doesn't appear in tray, taskbar or anywhere else but task manager. I have found several trojans/virii that do that...but I want to do it without them...it is obvious why... WAITING for an expert's reply www.stefysoft.comWell you could Register it as a service then you would only see it in the service manager.

Why is it you want to do this?panboy :
How do I register an app as a service....?
I want to do that because I use some apps (teamspeak) and I've put them in startup and I don't want them to appear in tray or taskbar because there are already too many there...please tell me how to do it...This Program has a Free Trial, that will let you do what you Want Easily, all you need to do tho use it forever is get a licence.

http://www.coretechnologies.com/products/AlwaysUp/

I pretty sure you can do it manually with a cmd switch but i don't know what it ishttp://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wcecomm5/html/wce50lrfregisterservice.asp

Thats how it works , only thing is you need to right a DLL to load it FIRST

Solve : How can I hide my USB Devices??

Answer»

Ok, guys here is the STORY! I installed a nanny cam in my home. This cam is plugged
into my USB Port, via a USB DVR BOX.  The nanny has access to the computer.  The software for the cam is hidden and password protected. Here is the PROBLEM the device shows up in “my computer” as a USB Cam.  When you click on the USB icon for the cam you can get snapshots from that cam.  So back to the question, “Is there anyway to HIDE devices that are plugged into the USB Port?”
All physical connections are hidden, cam, wires, lights, ect. Computer access is part of the deal for the nanny. Also, I don't intend to get another computer or laptop. So you WANT to video ths nanny without her knowledge?  Is this camera in the shower by any chance?  :-/^ lol  . i was wondering that myself!!The guys just wants to make sure his nanny's not being abusive  to the Kid's or Stealing

My dad owned a CCTV company, you wouldn't believe the kinda stuff people do when they don't know theres a camera

I don't know if you can Hide devices tho... i might google it a bitSeems to me a good solution would be to do what you don't want to do, buy another computer and connect the webcam to it.

Solve : Windows 3.x anyone??

Answer»

I have 2 questions right now,

one, is windows 3.x conciderd abondon-ware, because I don't really wan't to steal it

two, does anyone know where to get it?

I'm building the sweetest computer ever*, so I needed a sweet o/s to go on it, I would put my dos on it, but the floppies have sneakware on them lol

CPU 133 mhz
RAM-16 MB
HDD-344 MB

* better than any tower you will ever own
All so-called "abandonware" remains the copyright of the original owner.  Until the owner releases the product into the public domain or in some otherway relinquishes its copyright, the original copyright conditions prevail.  Windows 3.1 is still copyright of Microsoft, and installing it without a licence would be a breach of copyright.  You may however be able to pick up a licence on eBay, for buttons.

If you want to put DOS on the computer, try >FreeDOS<.

"Sneakerware" was in fact a reference to the way files were shared on floppy DISKS.  You walked around the office (in your sneakers) to deliver the disk.  Viruses were still just called "viruses" in those days.  Theres a PC downstairs in my Office Still Running 3.1,

No one Dares mess with it, for fear of borking it, you can take a copy off it if you want to fly over here and Bring your Floppy'sI'm up for a trip to Ireland! Though I think e-mail/mail would be more, cost effective. I only have like, 60 dollars loleBay and $20 will make you a happy guy!  Windows 3.0 is a {7} disk installation. It wouldn't be too much to download, ebay is a better IDEA.

Windows 3.11 is more "network compatible", works better, and does not display the REALLY old logo when you start it.
Why do you want Windows 3.x anyways? Its hardly compatible with anything.

I doubt that Microsoft would find out if you downloaded, but the Windows 3.x installation disks are ALWAYS called for when it comes to adding components (like fonts).
Just keep in mind, Windows 3.x had a few versions. (I prefer 3.11, its got screensavers and better colors and graphics)I in no way can I say that any of the following download links are trustable.
Here's the best I found:

That's it.
Please do a virus scan first...

Update: I'm sorry, but none of the links on that page seem to work. Maybe you can find it somewhere else on the site.Link deleted due to copyright infringement. This is not LEGAL to download.  Oh. Ok.
(bird is stepping on keyboard right now)
Will not post that link again. (im so glad that this isnt a "post bad once, and your out " board

Wait a minute: Mods can change posts? I'm confused. I dont remember that on my YaBB fourm...question for zylstra555, what kind of bird do you have? I have a black cap http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h13/Viper1991/Pika.jpg

Change, delete or move.
Lock/Unlock, Hide & Sticky.I have 2 questions
Will windows 3.x have a hdd space limit?
and will it have a ram limit?

I was just wondering if I had to worry bout that in my upcoming adventrues on windows 3.x series.

Oh I lied, I have another question, is it fairly easy to network with windows 3.x? I have a netork setup right now that is running 2 xp computers and one linux (suSE 6.something)

Thanks,

ViperQ1: Yes , 16bit FAT , Which means very small partitions , less than a Gig Each i think
Q2: Yes, I'm pretty sure it supports less than 128 mb perhaps Far less.
Q3: Not compared to new windows, you need to manulay assign every file type to a program using Program manager, and i don't know how easy its version of SHELL is to work

i have a copy of windows 3 point somthing, all 6 or 7 disks, i dont think they work anymore though... i dont even know where i put them...

edit: these floppies came with an OLD ibm my sister got from the school in the mid 90's, i was too young to remember when exactly, but she crashed it within two or three months... either that, they came with an old windows 3.x lappy my dad picked up from the goodwill, thing died when i accedentally left a floppy in it... i was too young then to know better...
