Solve : spell check for outlook express 6?

Answer»

What is the best and least expensive spell ckeck that will work with outlook express 6?HTTP://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=spellcheck+for+outlook+express

<-------------------You want something that's both the best and the least expensive? I doubt you can have both. But, how much difference is there in spell checkers? MS Word MIGHT provide the best, but there may be less expensive solutions.

Here's one good REFERENCE: Spell CHECK not working in XP Outlook Express, from the Google search.

I've always had spell check capability with OE because of having some version of MS Office installed.

Solve : Mismatched versions of Windows components...?

Answer»

"Mismatched versions of Windows components are installed on your system, try running the SETUP again"
OS: Windows 95

My question is this:
How exactly would I reinstall Windows 95 without loosing data?
I don't have a restore CD. But I have a Windows 95 CD. And no, I am not going to format.

What do I do?http://www.windowsreinstall.com/Ok. I think its just plane weird that there would be a site ALL about reinstalling Windows...
...
I am going to do a reinstall of Windows 95 then. If that doesnt work, then I will upgrade to 98, then 98SE.

I will use the below instructions.
Quote

Advantages :

You Don't loose any data or your preferences.

Disadvantages :

Only works in about 50 % of occasions and any Hard Drive problems are not detected. The success rate can differ from operating system to operating system. Windows 98 2nd edition and Windows ME have higher success rates. Unfortunately you may find that problems get worse or different problems arise from TRYING this method.

Windows NT, 2000, and XP repair option can cause problems due to different service packs being installed, to what is available on the Windows Disk.

How to do it :

Windows ME, 98, 95

You start the windows installation and reinstall in same directory.

But theres one problem, I dont have the CD key. Does Windows 95 have a CD key?
Yes, and you can find yours with this:

http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Write it down!!!

Once you get it reinstalled you could backup your data and do it correctly.

I would want better odds than 50%! That's the same as random occurrence, like flipping a coin. Quote

Now I have run into a problem. I was planning on using a Windows 95 CD that wasn't used to install Windows on my system.
I don't know what the key is for the CD I have. I don't even know what computer used the key in the first place. I believe its long gone now.Do you know if it is an OEM, or a consumer version or even what specific version it is - A, B, C? That does make it a little tougher. Quote
Do you know if it is an OEM, or a consumer version or even what specific version it is - A, B, C? That does make it a little tougher.
Just says "Microsoft Windows 95"
"FOR DISTRBUTION ONLY WITH A NEW PC"
"0196 Part No. 000-27722
219755"
(I don't think that that number is the CD key)
Info on number here:
http://www.emsps.com/OLDTOOLS/mswin95v.htm
I am currently reading the info on that page.(done reading info)
It is a
"0196 Part No. 000-27722 - Windows 95 OEM version A. Most recent directory dated 1/16/96 2:58:12PM. Files in root dated 7/11/95 9:50:00am."

What do I do?

EDIT:
I have found the key for the CD.
(it was in the filing cabinet. Hidden among manuals and books. )I am not sure that I want to do this yet.
My next question is this:
If I reinstall Windows 95, then will I have to reinstall ALL of my programs as well?
Am I better off upgrading to Windows 98?
(I have a 130MHz laptop with 24MB RAM. Would Windows 98 really work on that very well?)

IF you can reinstall Windows95 on top of what you have (and this is unlikely without a VALID number, unless the one you have on there just happens to work, and I DOUBT it) you probably will not need to reinstall programs. If they are buggered up you may have to anyway. I am unsure of the present state of conditions.

Win98 on 24 meg. regardless of processor is NOT recommended. If it runs it will be so slow and thrash your hard drive so much you will not use it for long.

So, I guess it's off to eBay for you.

What are the specifics on the Win95 machine you have now? The 24 meg RAM will be usable with Win95.

Solve : Screens Jumping?

Answer»

Startup was NORMAL this morning and later in the day all my screens (internet, email (OE), Works, even msconfig files -everything with WORDS I think) started "jumping" (I get motion sick even looking at
the computer. I'm typing on a laptop. It's like the vertical hold needs adjusting but I don't think the computer HAS a vertical hold does it? (I am semi-computer illiterate).
I am up to date with Norton Antivirus - ran a scan and it's fine. Pestcontrol doesn't find any
spyware or hijackers either.
Anyone have any SOLUTIONS here?? I want my computer back!
ChrisWhat are the specifics on the machine and how old is it? If it is still under warranty I would contact the manufacturer. There are very few user servicable aspects to a laptop. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the video drivers, but that's about it. It sounds hardware related. My laptop is fine. It's my PC (Insignia) and of COURSE it's out of
warranty. I thought video driver too but was hoping something
simple might fix it. Computer is only a couple of years old though.
ChrisSince it is a desktop you should then try ANOTHER monitor on that machine and try that monitor on another machine to isolate where the problem is.Good idea - thanks! Chris

Solve : Lost files??

Answer»

I have a client with an IBM laptop (Windows XP Pro SP2) who was a member of a domain . I created a new profile & changed him to a workgroup. I was able to log in with the new profile, see shares, add printers, etc. on the new workgroup. I’ve been able to copy his Favorites & Desktop to his new profile.

My problem is this: If you go to Explorer\Documents and Settings\old profile\MyDocuments, there is a folder beneath named “My Recent Documents”. In the folder are many shortcuts, in fact, all are shortcuts, to various LOCATIONS but MAINLY the ‘Desktop’. I’ve looked in his old profile and the desktop, nor any other locations indicated, have any of those files (lots of Excel, PP, Word files).

I’ve done a search (including hidden files/folder) and come up with nothing.

He insists that he saved them in his My Documents folder (I’ve checked and the default location for opening a file in Excel, for example, is the My Documents folder).

Ideas?Well the new location would be "My Documents" - but as for the location before you changed him over to a workgroup...?

If you can't find anything using the Adminstrator account, using "Find files", then they're not on the laptop. Possibly they were in a Briefcase-like store under his old profile? Otherwise, I would guess that the files are all on the domain's file server. That seems logical - yes? Quote

I agree, though he swears that he had recently worked on some of those files on the laptop.

I've done a search using wildcards (*.) with various extensions and have come up with nothing.

Oh well, he has hard copies of everything and it will be a pain to recreate them but I guess that's what he's going to have to to.

THANKS for your reply.

I don't suppose there's any chance of talking to the I.T. guy responsible for that domain? I'm just wondering if they were using an encrypted filestore (which of course wouldn't come up on your search).

I don't know. All the references were shortcuts, no files or folders in that particular subfolder. I could check with the guy and see if he still has contacts with that company, though I know he's left if some time ago. :-?

Have you tried right-clicking on the shortcuts, selecting "Properties" and finding out where the shortcuts are actually pointing? That'll give a big clue.

Yes, I have. They are all shortcuts that point to a] folders or files on his desktop in his old profile b] a location on a "\\" UNC CONNECTION, probably to the old domain. The "Start In " area in blank on some files/folders.

That's the strange part. When I copied his old desktop to his newly created profile desktop for the current p2p network, there are folders that correspond to the shortcuts, but no files that those shortcuts point to. When you dbl-clk on them, the screen 'blinks' and nothing happens.

I noticed something today. While checking the Event Log I found that he was part of an Active Directory domain that might have had a GPO. He also has a mapped drive that I can't get access to.

Well, I talked to him yesterday and told him all the searching I've done and he said that's just the way it is and he'll deal with it.

I sure hate to let him down but without prior knowledge of how things were set up it makes it next to impossible to "make it right".

Thanks for your help

Solve : unable to access c partition after reinstall?

Answer»

Good Day, I was having problems with xp on The C partition, so I formatted the d side of the partition on the harddrive and reinstalled windows. Now I am unable to gain access to the os on the c side of the partition inorder to transfer files. Help pleasecan u access it via "administrative TOOLS"

P.S. to get to administrative tools...

START>CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>COMPUTER MANAGEMENT>STORAGE>DISK MANAGEMENTI have tried that and the c partition is intact with the operating system and such, but it is listed as healthy system, and the E partition is listed as healthy boot. I am able to access most of the files except my personal documents which I think I may have marked as private therefore not allowing me to copy them.
I have tried to reboot, gone into bios and TOLD it to boot from the C partition which it refuses to do. :-/ Is there any known way of rebooting from the C partition with the xp cd?Could try editing the boot.ini file. ANOTHER thing you could try would be going into safe MODE and trying to change the permissions on the files. If that doesn't work then you can cacls them. finally got the files I had backed up off the c partition to recover to where I wanted them, so NOW then a good stick of TNT and format that C partition should do the trick. Big thanks for the help from Guyana S.A.

Solve : Black Screen but works?

Answer»

Odd (at least to me) loss of shell/desktop/gui/whatever.
System info: Built PC, XP-Pro SP-1, P4, 1.8GHz, 1G RAM, Asus motherboard, logitech trackball. System used for office tasks, light CAD work. 2 & half years old roughly.
Problem = WIN seems to start fine, nothing strange on post screens I can see as they whiz by, but after "welcome" splash, screen goes black except for mouse pointer. System works reasonably well nonetheless, so long as I use TASKMANAGER to access "run" in order to start whatever. Screen looks fine in applications. Workstation & windows explorer are running.
Recent history is system was becoming unstable, getting bsod every few hours with VARYING error messages. Tried multiple malware/virus checkers, nothing significant. Looked at Registry, was a huge mess, did some cleanup on own, was too much for my limited SKILLS so downloaded a cleanup tool recommended by friend, Registry Booster. In middle of download got bsod, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. When re-booted, got the aforementioned black screen. It's been with me since.
After considerable effort got Registry Booster downloaded and paid for, it seemed to work well. Found 1807 registry errors, appeared to fix vast majority correctly. However did not solve problem, though I will say PC boots considerably faster now, so I get to see the black screen quicker. Only other consistent pattern is always get bsod if I attempt to install AVG antivirus. An old copy of Norton I had around installed fine, but can't update so mostly did it as a test. Updated AdAware, installed Spysweeper, installed AutoRuns, etc with no prob. Even MS Office runs fine (for once). Exact same pattern of behavior in Safe Mode, btw.
Tomorrow I will try Memtest86 (it's getting quite late here), but in the meantime if anyone has any suggestions as to the loss of the shell/desktop/gui/whatever I would very much appreciate it.
i suppose you could Add "explorer.exe" To the Run Key in the Registry , or to the start up Folder.

Al tho if explorer is failing to boot at all it might be broken.
It might be best to just reinstall windowsA good format and reinstall fixes most Windows problems, for a while. gx1_man is that like your catch pharse?

and if so where can i get one?Yes, I considered re-format and re-install XP, however I am loath to do so. Not just because of the time/hassle, but because in a recent move I unfortunately lost the disks & info for several programs I use on a daily basis.
I can't afford to repuchase at this point.
Try downloading this shellfix regedit from f-secure:

http://ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg

I've had it work before, not with this exact issue but something similar. It's worth a shot anyways. Quote

Solve : Dell Restore Partition?

Answer»

My mother in law is having some major issues with her one year old Dell 5100 (can't uninstall some programs, some programs crash when launching, MSN toolbar updater crashes even when IE is not running, can't update programs (adobe, java), WINDOWS UPDATE CRASHES!!!, McAfee disables repeatedly, WIndows says that mulitple antivirus programs are running., but I don't see that there are ....and these are just things that I personally have seen)

I don't know if this is malware related or what, and quite frankly, I don't think it's worth the time to investigate. She has less than 1 GB of data to worry about, only one peripheral to install, and only a couple of non factory programs to install. PLUS high speed internet for ease of program download and update.

This Dell did not come with the Restore CD's but the Restore Partition where they take the image of the HD from the factory installation and store it in a special partiton, then when you run the procedure, it recopies that image into the main partition. I chatted with a Dell tech support rep this afternoon and he assured me that the Restore procedure is just as effective as a good old fashioned format and reinstall from the CD.

I have never worked with images or this type of restore before. Is it really as good as the old fashioned way? It sounds great - only 10 minutes!?

If there is a virus, would this clean that up too?

PK
If it works you will be OK unless there is an infestation there as well. At this point go ahead and give it a try per their instructions. What have you got to lose? Most of these restore CD's format the drive and that is surely what you want to do. You may be able to transfer any data files to a pen drive, CDRW, etc. first depending on the functionality of the machine.

I would ALWAYS prefer a real Windows CD to reinstall with, but this meets the need of a basic user who would never understand how to download annd install a driver, etc.No, that is the problem, I am not using a Restore CD, but the Restore PARTITION. I don't think that it does format first, does it? I guess that is PART of my question.

Yeah, data backup is not a problem.

PK Quote

I don't think that it does format first, does it? I guess that is part of my question.

You won't know all the options until you start. I would hope so. Did Dell advise you on this?I work for Dell so I have some experience with the PC Restore. The command is ctrl+F11 on the dell logo if you didn't already have it. It actually works quite well especially in situations such as your's where you just want it fixed. I'm not positive on the specifics of it but it does use norton ghost. Works pretty good and I haven't had any real problems with it. The only time it won't work is if the mbr is damaged, otherwise you're all good. Give it a go, I'll try to find out if it formats the drive at all or what exactly it does tomorrow at work and let you know what I find out. And ya, it'll take care of SPYWARE, viruses, OS corruption, whatever else happens to be plauging(sp?) the computer. Well... as long as it's not hardware related. Some people say that it does format first, but I don't understand how it is able to do this in 10 minutes. This is a 130 GB HD!

RapedApe: Please find out for sure if you can and let me know.

At first I was skeptical when I found out that Dell no longer shipped CD's, but I have to admit, this does sound very convenient. I am excited to give it a whirl.

Thanks

PKthe trick the use is they use ghost, which can just copy a FAT table on to your drive, rater than scanning your drive and building one from scratch.

its cheating realyFrom what I've found out it doesn't really format. Kinda just deletes everything there and then throws down the image. I use norton ghost myself and the image restore, when successful, works very well. Give it a go and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Quote
At first I was skeptical when I found out that Dell no longer shipped CD's, but I have to admit, this does sound very convenient. I am excited to give it a whirl.

Dell does ship real CD's but it is $10 more - a very wise investment to choose that option! You don't actually have to pay for it. You can just call up after you get it and say that you want to reformat the computer. Just say that you know how to do it yourself and you don't need any help, just want the CD's. Then off the CD's go speeding to your door. Well, I did it, and everything seemed to go well. It sure was fast!! Only 4 minutes to reimage, then about another hour to setup, remove software, update, etc.

I do have a question though. I forgot to unplug the peripherals (webcam and a printer/scanner) before i started the restore procedure, but did unplug them during the procedure, before Windows started. Is this OK? I did not see any problems. I would think that as long as they were unplugged before the initial Windows start up, i should be OK, as the devices were not activated while the reimaging was taking place, right?

PK
Yes, better to unplug ALL peripherals, but it seems to have worked ok, right?Glad to hear it worked out for ya.

I've forgot to ask my customers to unplug the devices from time to time and it's never caused a problem. Pretty sure that all will be well for you there. The general consensus (including from Dell hardware support chat) is that there should not be an issue.

Yeah, everything went great as far as I can see.

PKGood for you and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Bundled Windows Problem?

Answer»

Alight, so here's the deal...I'm trying to find a decent laptop to buy that does NOT come with a bundled copy of Windows. Why you might ask? It's because I don't like windows and would rather use Linux.

I have already checked with most of the major sellers (Dell, Gateway, HP, ect...) and they all say that they cannot ship a notebook without an OS (in this case Windows).

So...if anyone knows of a place that I can get a decent laptop without the bundled Windows OS I would greatly appreciate it.

Specs of notebook:

Preferablly (sp?) an AMD CPU (~1.6GHz)
512MB RAM
Wireless Card
At least 20GB hard drive space

Thanks in advance for any suggestions your guys might have.Depends on where you're located. If you're in Canada then NCIX is a good choice, in the states I imagine Newegg.com would be a good call or monarch computers. If it doesn't have to be brand new, then eBay is a good choice for some very good secondhand laptop deals.Even if you could get one unbundled, it would probably not affect the cost much, unfortunately. These "exclusive" bundling deals are one thing that got Microsoft in trouble in the past, although they were never punished for it. What brands are you looking for? www.gigstrand.com has some nice machines, but they are not name BRANS. Keep in mind that there can be compatibility issues with laptops as they are so proprietary. ThinkPads have historically been very Linux friendly, but I am not sure about the new Lenovo offerings.Hey guys. Thanks for all the responses, this really helps.

GX1_Man- I am not looking for a name brand at all, just SOMETHING with the rough specs that I have given and something that runs.

robpomeroy- I will check eBay out. Thanks for the info.

Once again, thanks guys. If you guys find anything else out about this it'd really help.some stores sell there old display models... you could look into that, just make sure you know what your getting, and why cant you just format it and install linux and forget about the bundled windows OS? Quote

some stores sell there old display models... you could look into that, just make sure you know what your getting, and why cant you just format it and install linux and forget about the bundled windows OS?

I could check the local computer store about that. Also, I don't want to have to pay for software that I don't want and won't use. Sure it's only 100 bux, but with that extra $100 I could use it to upgrade my SYSTEM specs...I'm pretty sure I can get a gig of RAM for $100Many older laptops can't use a gig of RAM.Well that sucks...guess I'm going to have to get a fairly new one then.Laptop memory isn't cheap. It isn't? Man...this is kind of starting to make me angry... WELL, let me satisfy your curiocity, even though there shouldnt be questions like 'why should you do this or that', as far as we are concetrating to whether something can happen

the location of the 'All Programs' makes me activating it accidentally by hovering cursor over it (if you click on 'start' button to open the 'start menu' in order to go to the 'recent documents' or the 'recent programs')
I have MAKE it open immediatelly (using tweakui) as it should be, but this makes it activate by mistake
and dont tell me to delay its activation, its not the solution to have to wait whenever I want to open the 'All Programs' menu
in xp style 'start men' there are 2 columns, I want the 'All Programs' in the right column instead of the left which is the default

I wouldnt prefer a 3rd-party app to customize taskbar and such, a WINDOWS registry hack would be prefered

umm, maybe we can make the 'All Programs' menu open only with click on it, instead of hovering on it ?? I want it to WORK only for this menu

thanks Quote
even though there shouldnt be questions like 'why should you do this or that', as far as we are concetrating to whether something can happen

Unfortunately this IS important as sometimes there are better ways to accomplish a solution than the way someone thinks it should be. Sometimes it cannot be done at all. The goal can necessitate the means. Don't be defensive.

I don't have a solution for you, and frankly still don't understand the problem. When I click on Start I can either hover OR click on programs to get it to open with a standard Windows installation. Perhaps you could elaborate some more. Quote

ok, you can either click or hover in order to open the 'All Programs' menu

but I want this menu appear at the right column of the 'start menu'

if this cannot happen, then just make it open ONLY with click, not by hovering over it

thanksanyone please?
Try this if you like: Right-click start button>properties>start menu>cusstomize>advanced... now clear the "open submenus..." box. Now the all programs menu will only come up if you click it. Hope that'll be an adequate fix for you. Good luck!

I don't know what "O2B ;Diskette drive a error" means. What is the exact error message? Has anyone been WORKING on or in the computer? It worked just fine and now this? Is it functional beyond this point? What operating system?Well it's some KIND of hardware ISSUE. That much I'm sure of. So disconnect any extra devices remove any floppy disks or CD's that might be in the machine and try again. If still nogo then contact you're system vendor/manufacturer for assistance.I dont know what u mean by exact error it will say Error O2BO: Diskette Drive a error. nobody has done any work on it operating systme is xp. and it worked fine prior.O2BO:dISKETTE DRIVE A error

Do you have a floppy Drive?

If so make sure the cable is seated and the correct WAY around.

If not go into the bios and tell it not to look for a floppy drive on boot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also check the bios setting for error report and action
Halt on all errors is set as default in some bios

Set it to Halt on Keyboard error only

Then you can diagnose the problem with the system running

PS.This started after I did a cleaning job with ACE Utilites V.3, I did create a restore point using this program and tried to undo the changes I made with no luck.Go to start -> run -> msconfig. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility. Go to the BOOT.INI tab and then click "Check All Boot Paths". If it comes up saying it found a bad one or something similar then just go ahead and tell it to fix it. Can't remember exactly what it says but it's pretty straight forward. If that doesn't work post back here and we'll have to go a more detailed route. You need to delete the recovery console entry from your boot.ini file ,because Msconfig will show it as a valid boot path. open you boot ini and it should look like this , only under operating systems you will have 2 when you only want one , so delete the line with the recovery console version

Back Up your Boot.ini first, if you break it windows wont boot any more

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=MULTI(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectIf you're mainly concerned about eliminating the delay during startup, you can simply lower the time that that screen pauses before going on. You can set it on 0 if you want. To do this, right click on My Computer, select Properties, and select the tab labeled Advanced. Click on Settings, under Startup and Recovery. On the Startup and Recovery screen, change the setting as desired. This might be a better approach than deleting Recovery Console from the boot.ini file.Ok, I went into System Configuration Utility and click Check All Boot Paths and it did show the recovery console as a bad path so I clicked delete, rebooted and screen popped up saying I was running in selective mode, clicked the box saying dont show this again and THINGS are perfect. Any ideas why this happened in the first place? Thanks everyone for help.

Solve : application development for windows?

Answer»

Hi,

I am not SURE if this is the right place to POST this msg. I am a Mac programmer, I am looking to put together a developing system for Windows PC. I am not sure how and where to look for the compiler and things like that. I program in C, C++ and JAVA. I will really appreciate if someone here has experience doing this and can guild me through the process.

Thanks in advance.

MacPCThe obvious ROUTE for you from C/C++ would be C# and .NET programming. Just grab the latest IDE from Borland/Microsoft and away you go. Or you could try the open source #DEVELOP.

Solve : My XP computer can't join a domain?

Answer»

On my network of 30 computer I have one that is running XP and does not recognize my local domain. I cannot chage from a workgroup to the domain because the PC doesn't recognize the domain. From this PC i can ping the domain with both IP address and the domain name. In Windows Explore the domain does not SHOW up. This computer, to my knowledge is not setup any different that any of the others that had no problem joining the domian.
Anybody have any suggestions on what to try to resolve this problem.Which version of XP do you have running on the rogue PC? What network hardware? What software FIREWALL? What O/S is your server running? Etc.

The more info we get the better a chance we have of OFFERING useful suggestions. Hi,
The client trying to join the domain is a Dell Deminsions, the OS is Windows XP Pro, I turned off the firewall on the client, the Server is a Dell running Windows 2000 server. The Domain server is also the DNS and the workstation is setup with the server's IP address as the DNS. The confusing thing is other Dell's using XP Pro are connecting ALONG with a whole bunch of Win 2K Pro workstation, all with no problems. I haven't been able to detect any differences in the setups of the computers that work compared to this one that doesn't.In the network settings for this workstation's NIC, is everything set up to use DHCP? Or do you have anything manually assigned? (The WINS tab under "advanced", for example.)

Can you browse to the domain controller using Windows Explorer? (i.e. "\\servername\anyshare")I have a DHCP setup but this workstation, as well as most others in the domain, have the IP address, mask, gateway and DNS IP address entered manually. I checked today and using explore and all other methods within Windows doesn't allow me to recognize the domain. I also can't see the shares on the domain. Only at the DOS prompt can I ping the domain by both IP address and by the domain name. By the way the domain is LancasterChristian.com or LCS. Both work for the ping but nothing works in the Windows envirnment.
Tomorrow I'm going to reinstall the Windows XP and if there's any corruption in there reloading the OS may help. I'll let you know but at this point I don't even have an idea of what to do. I'll also try running DCdiag on the domain. Thanks for your help, it's nice to have someone to share these problems.
BillRogue hosts or lmhosts files, perhaps?

If you're going to GO ahead and reinstall, then perhaps we should leave further diagnosis until the workstation is back up and running.

With 30+ computers, isn't it a bit of a pain manually assigning IPs? Can't you just leave the server(s) on manual IPs, and simply let the domain controller assign and collate IPs for the rest?

Solve : Iv'e got 2 problems...?

Answer»

My mom has a VERY old computer, and recently she's been having 2 problems with it:

1. Whenever she tries to load WINDOWS 3.11 from the DOS screen, it stops loading and says to run 'Setup' again. I have no idea what it's talking about, since I hardly ever use her computer, and she's not very good with computers, so she's not much help.

2. Is there any way to view all programs from the DOS screen? My mom lost her list of program filenames and can't remember a lot of them.

I'm getting really frustrated with this for several REASONS: first, the machine is just REALLY old, second, it doesn't have a D-Drive, and third, my mom seems to think I'm some kind of WIZARD and is upset that I haven't fixed anything yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Are these DOS or Windows programs? If Windows, you will need to have a FUNCTIONING Windows installation to open them. Does she have the original DOS and WIndows disks? What about some INFO on the computer?

Solve : Start menu wll not appear?

Answer»

the problem is that when i TURN on my computer my start menu and all the background icons will not appear. all i can do is press Alt+Ctrl+Del and open Windows Task Manager then open a site from there but i cannot get to anything else except the internet...my OS is Window XP HOME edition..if anyone knows what is going on help would be much appreciated
THANKS!System Restore From Command Prompt

That's where someone with this problem usually ends up. You can try bringing up task manager and then going file -> new task and typing in ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/shellfix.reg. It's worth a shot anyways, does fix it from time to time.If system restore DOESNT work, then please post any recent programs you have installed.
I had a similar problem that occurred when I installed more than one antivirus scanner.I suspect it is not a random occurrence so a lot more details would be helpful.

Solve : Screen goes black when trying to install WinXP?

Answer»

I was going to set up this machine to dual-boot, with Windows XP Home (SP1) on one partition, and Fedora Core 5 on another.

When I boot up the PC with the Windows XP CD in the drive, it BRINGS up the "Press any key to boot from CD" message like it should. I press the any key and it flashes a message about detecting system stuff. After this, the screen goes black and I get no install, no nothing. It just sits there forever.

What's wrong with it? The drive itself is working fine as far as I can tell.

System:
Pentium4 2.53Ghz
512mb Dual-Channel DDR RAM
MSI Mobo... VIA chipset, can't rememeber the model number
NVidia GeForce4 5200 128mb video
one CD/RW drive, one IDE HD, one SATA HDDid this machine ever work correctly? Are you trying to load XP on the SATA drive? If so, you need drivers for that.I don't see how it matters where I'm trying to install Windows, as it doesn't even get that far before it hangs. But for the record, I would be trying to install it on the IDE HD (SATA drive is for storage).

Yes it has worked previously, this machine was previously running Windows XP. It now has a new IDE HD, and so I need to install Windows XP on it.

Put in the CD, boot the computer. Computer prompts to press any key, I do so. Screen goes black and hangs, that's it.Are both drives seen correctly in the BIOS? I am concerned that this is not set up right so this is why it does matter.Oh yes, the BIOS sees the drives just fine. Nothing's changed since the last time Windows was on this machine (that I know of).

I hope it isn't a hardware ISSUE of some sort.mundungu..... Perhaps a redundant question , but have you changed the boot sequence to 1st boot CD -Rom ?

dl65 You say there is a new HDD in there? have you tried unplugging that and trying the setup, just to see if you get past the black screen or not?

ViperYes, unplugging the new IDE HD, everything goes SMOOTHLY. Except, of course, for the "You have no hard drives" message...

Does this mean it's bad? It works perfectly fine under Linux. And if so, how would I go about using my SATA HD? I need drivers for it, but I don't have a floppy drive at the moment. Something tells me I may need one...

EDIT: I found the culprit... apperently Fedora Core 5 did something nasty to the MBR when it installed GRUB (boot loader), which would stall out the windows hardware detection. I just fixed my MBR and it's working great, I suppose this problem has little to do with windows You're always ahead to load Windows first and then any other O/S, because MS does not play well with others.

Solve : Proper way to power down external USB HD?

Answer»

What is the proper METHOD for powering down and external USB HD with Windows XP Pro? Is it ok to power down the main computer, then turn off the external USB HD? or Should I always use the Unplug/eject wizard to first DISCONNECT the USB HD, then turn it off?

Is it ok to have the USB hd connected via USB when the main computer is first turned on?Using the Unplug/Eject wizard is the preferred method for disconnecting USB devices. This allows Windows time to properly shutdown and disconnect the device, and ensures that all READ and write processes have been completed properly.

To use the wizard, look for an icon in your task bar that resembles a green ARROW. Right click the icon and choose to disconnect a device. Select the device you wish to disconnect (a HDD in your case) and select disconnect.

A Note: if the icon is not in your system tray, you probably don't have a USB device plugged in and operational.I understand, but does just shutting down the computer "allow Windows time to properly shutdown and disconnect the device, and ensure that all read and write processes have been completed properly"?Yes, doing a standard shutdown is fine. Windows doesn't actually disconnect the USB device during the standard shutdown process, but it does ensure that reading and writing have been completed. It is not NECESSARY for a user to actually disconnect each USB device before shutting down.

Also, it's generally ok to shutdown your computer (with devices still attached), disconnect the device while the computer is off, and then boot back up. Thanks. One of the folders/files on my external HD became corrupt. Now I can't create any new folders. I tried to run Windows check disk, but Windows wouldn't finish. Check disk didn't work for the USB HD when scheduled on a reboot. I was worried that because I was turning the computer off with out disconnecting the USB HD caused my problem.

I can read the HD fine. The HD is just for data. There's currently no useful data on it. I'll run the disk that came with the HD, or Disk Doctor, and hopefully fix the corrupted files. If not, I'll just recreate it.I think those external USB drives are flakey, so watch out!

I would recommend using the little icon to stop it first if and when you get anything important on there.Of course, if necessary, you can format the drive.

Solve : Service pack 2 help?

Answer»

Hey, Guys.

I'm trying to instal service pack 2 on my windows xp pro. Problem is, my drive is partitioned and I use drive D, insted of C. I tried to install the update but it wouldnt, as it was trying to install to the C drive. I extracted all the installation files to my desktop, and opend up the update text file and searched for 'C:\' and replaced the C with a D.

This kind of worked, as it installed, but when I had to restart the computer, it kept on restarting and I had to repair xp. I tried this twice, having to repair windows each time.

Does anyone know what I can do?. Thanks for your help.Is this a dual boot or some kind of busted install? If the former, it should be no problem. If the latter, you might be better off doing it right for a lot of reasons.Basicly, I got some SORT of virus a few days ago. I was able to install windows on a new partition, so I could then back up my old files. Once I put all my old files on a disk, I FORMATED the old drive, so all my free space is on the d drive now, and the the c drive is about 8mb in size.

Really, I would like to just have the c drive, and not have this problem. I tried looking around for a partition program that would let me merge the c with the d, but they are all pay.

So for now im just looking for a way I can install Service pack 2 on the d drive."Bootit NG" is a Free boot disk that lets you Mess up all sorts of partitions

But They dont tend to like moveing your MBR, if you do resize your partition you may need to Use FixMBR and FixBoot, to GET it working again

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ Boot it NG websiteI would recommend a backup, then repartitioning the drives if you want and reinstall Windows is a more conventional fashion. I find a nominal size C Drive (20 gig) and the rest on D works best. I use Acronis True Image, so a reinstall of the OS takes < 10 minutes in case of disaster. (That was the best $30 I spent on software lately.)

Thank you for your reply. I am not a computer geek so I don't know what a video card is. I don't have other devices connected to my computer. Just the computer monitor. The monitor is only about 6 months old. It is a flat screen and has been working fine up till now, if that is the problem. Do you think it possible that it could be the monitor? I tried google and couldn't find anything specific. Its all kind of lingo I don't understand anyway. If you have any other suggestions it would be greatly appreciiated. ThanksOne way of testing the monitor is simply to connect it to another computer that's known to be functioning PROPERLY and see whether your monitor works right. And, if you can try a different monitor on your computer, that is another troubleshooting technique. Be careful when connecting monitors to avoid bending pins on the monitor cable connector. And, shutdown a computer before you disconnect or connect a monitor.

What make and model is your computer? What make and model is your monitor?

Intel Pentium III and a Starlogic Monitor. Thanks for your advice. I think I have an old monitor in the garage. Will give it a try. I am using my laptop right now.By make and model, I mean, is it a Compaq, Hewlett Packard, Sony, etc? And, what model, such as Compaq Presario SR1730Z, Dell Dimension 8400, etc.? Same for monitor? What model? For example: I don't just have a Samsung monitor, I have a Samsung SyncMaster 763MB. Quote

Well it appears that it is the RGB card, not the monitor. Where do I buy one and how much do they usually cost? Thanks again for your help.If diagnostics lead to the conclusion that you need a new video card, you'll have to know what type of expansion slots your motherboard has. That's why I asked for the exact model of your computer. We STILL need to know the exact model of your computer.

Meanwhile, let's get some other info from your system. If you go to Control Panel and select Display, and select Settings, what do you see there in the "Display:" box? What is your screen resolution? Color quality?

And, do this. Click on Start, Run, and enter dxdiag in the Run box. Hit Enter or click OK to start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Click on the Display tab. What iinfo do you see there under Device? Click on Test DirectDraw to run the tests. What were the results? Click on Test Direct3D to run the tests. What were the results?

Also, right click on My Computer, select Properties, select Hardware, click on Device Manager. Do you see any items marked with an EXCLAMATION mark in a yellow triangle or with a red X? Which ones? Thanks again, you are very helpful. I will try to do all you say but, it I need a new video card, how much do they usually run? Do places like Radio Shack carrying them? When I turn on the computer it goes thru the diagnostics and then it goes to the Windows XP screen then shuts off and displays RGB no signal input and then it shuts down and goes thru the diagnostics all over again. So I can't do any of things you suggest. HELP! Quote
Thanks again, you are very helpful. I will try to do all you say but, it I need a new video card, how much do they usually run? Do places like Radio Shack carrying them?
They are sold by retailers such as Best Buy, CompUSA, Staples, OfficeMax, Circuit City, etc, and by many online sellers. Two online sources I like are newegg.com and tigerdirect.com. The online auction, ebay, is another source.

The price range is huge; it can be a low as $20 or $30 or it can be over $500. Unless you're an extreme gamer or a developer doing a lot of video work, you can easily find something priced at less than $75 that will serve you purposes just fine. If you want to keep the cost below $50, there still PLENTY of cards to be found.

When connected the other monitor, did you get the same message? Any difference at all?

As I understand you now, the computer does not even bootup completely. That was not CLEAR to me until your last post.

Due to your lack of knowledge of computer hardware, I'm very reluctant to try to lead you through any actual hardware upgrades. Also, I can not - and I think no one else can - say for sure that replacing a video card will fix your computer.

But, another question: Since this problem started, do you get beep sounds when you turn on your computer that you did not hear before the problem started? Has anyone tampered with any hardware components in that computer?

And still unanswered, exactly what model is your computer?

The computer is an MSI. It was a rebuilt one that I bought quite awhile ago. I couldn't find the model # however. Yes, when I hooked up my old monitor it did the exact same thing. It didn't make any different kind of beeping noises before or after the problem started. Nobody has tampered with my hardware. I am the only one who uses it at home. Thanks again, I have the feeling I will be needing another computer although I had hoped it would be a cheap fix such as the video card you mentioned.Unfortunately, unless you're willing to take it to a computer repair shop, I would say should, indeed, be thinking about getting another computer. As you know, the cost of having it repaired, compared to the cost of buying a new one, will probably make the repair option look quite unattractive. If you can find a repair shop, you might ask what it would cost just to diagnose it and give you an estimate.

If the evidence clearly indicated a video card, that would be a fairly inexpensive repair. But, again, I think the evidence is definitely not that clear. The problem may be a faulty motherboard, which is the main circuit board in the computer, or it could be a faulty power supply box inside the computer.

Solve : Cut and Paste issues in WinXP?

Answer»

For some reason I am no longer able to cut and PASTE text anymore. At first I thought it was just a small problem that would get fixed by restarting but I've done so many times and nothing. I was trying to cut and paste a url into another forum and nothing. Mainly the issue is with pasting the text. I can cut words or whatever but when I try to repaste them the "paste" option is grey as if to indicate there is nothing to paste. Ctrl+V does nothing either. Anyone ever have this problem and if so, how do I fix it?Can you cut and paste within Notepad? Your OS?

Ok I am able to cust and paste within notepad. Also seems that I can only cut and paste info from notepad. When I tried to cut and paste something else somewhere else it only proceeded to paste the info from Notepad. Even when I cut some text it just pastes what I cut from notepad. My os is WINXP Professional 2002Can you give specific examples of not being able to paste? For example, can you high-light text in your browser, copy it, then paste it into Notepad? Actually no I cannot. For instance if I wanted to share a certain url with a friend over an instant msg. If I went to try and cut and paste it in the im window from let's say this website(My browser is Firefox) nothing would come up. However if I try to cut and paste info within Notepad back into notepad it's like theres no problem at all.OK, we KNOW you can cut and paste within Notepad, and now we also know you can not copy/cut and paste a URL into AIM. But, what about copy/cut and paste between other apps? I think more specifics may help narrow this down. Can you copy a URL from your browser into Notepad? Can you copy text from a browser window into Notepad? How about Wordpad? What other apps do have that you can test? Word? Excel? Outlook Express? Can you capture a screen print (the Print Screen button on your keyboard) and paste that into Paint? What kind of adware/apyware/virus protection are you running on a regular basis? You may want to run Hijack This and post your LOG file here for analysis as well. Quote

I cannot post a url or anything else for that matter into Notepad. I also cannot post a url or any text into MS Word or anything else for that matter. Also I can cut/paste within MS Word and between Word/Notepad as well. The main problem just seems to be cut/paste between aim/web browser and pasting from aim/web browser to notepad/ms word. Also I tried posting a url from firefox into another forum and that's when I first noticed the problem. However when I did the "PrtScn" into paint it worked fine.

Solve : Spc??

Answer»

Please excuse mental retardation in advance.

Long story short, I'm trying to boot up windows from this disk thing and there's a list that goes something like
Spc) *ACTION*
1) *action*
2)*action*
Etc.

The Spc) *action* is the one I want...how do I select it? Sorry again, I really have no idea as to what I'm doing...Long story short didn't get it. How about the WHOLE story with a lot of details as this is just too vague. All righty. My computer just decided to crash one day, and so I turned it on and soon it crashed again, but this time it showed this blue screen with white writing saying that the harddrive was unreadable (I think) and that it may be due to recently installed hardware (which there was none). Then it said "beginning dump of physical memory" or something close to that, and then it froze, so I turned it off. Then, everytime it would turn on it woudl go to the loading windows screen and then would restart by itself again and again until you turn it off. I got my friend over, and he had the computer boot up from this windows disk that he got from somewhere. It worked, and everything was fine for a little, but then the problem started exactly like it did the last time. So, I tried to boot it up from the cd again and it was goig ok, but the options for the disk are like the ones in my first post. the first listed says spc) Boot up windows, or maybe thats not exactly what it says but I know thats the one I want to do...but I don't know how to select that option, because I don't know what to press that means 'spc'. The other ones you can just press 1, or 2, or 3, or whatever. Sorry, I told you it was a long story, and that Ihave no clue...(he's on vacation, otherwise I'd just ask him)

Also...I was PLAYING the Sims 2 both times it happened, and my friend also told me that i neede dabout 512 RAM instead of the 128 ive been running. Could that have casued the problem? What are the memory specs for the game? More than that, I'm sure. So with inappropriate hardware all bets are off.yeah, we figured out that I just need to get more RAM, but as of right now i just want to get windows back up and running...Do you have a real WIndows CD to reload, if necessary?I've worked all this out already. What I need to know is, am I looking at THINGS the wrong way, or is there something that I need to know about selecting a choice that starts with spc) ? For example, to select choice 1), I would press the number 1. Is there anything like that?I have never seen anything like this "SPC" phenemenon. Perhaps something was loaded on there or it is a MALWARE infestation. What are you using for virus/spyware protection? Can you boot to SAFE Mode? Is the computer usable?Nevermind, I will get assistance when my friend comes home; I'm probably just misinterpreting something. Thank you for your help.Could "spc" be "sfc" system file checker?"Spc" turned out to stand for space. As in space bar.

Solve : Multiple format issues?

Answer»

Formatted my computer.

My computer freezes and restarts or freeezes and gets a blue screen error message very often during the format. It happened alot when i left my computer unattendeded before the format.

First problem

Used the XP CD to format and after i did a full ntsf or whatever install the comp restarted and i got the NTLDR is missing error. I fixed that by copying it to the c drive using the recovery thing.

Second problem

Got the hal.dll is missing error, so i copied it on a floppy from this computer (my old one) and put it in the c. Then i got another error so i decided it must of been a faulty installation. I deleted the partition, created new one and then i setup windows. This time i did a quick install because my computer gets the blue error screen saying there might be faulty hardware or some other stuff for longer installs. Comp restarted and no problems, the windows flag came it went to the light blue screen setup and it went down some of the points on the left side and when it went to preparing installation or whatever my computer either restarts or gets that blue error message. I am stuck on the setup of windows now (the light blue screen setup after the initial dark blue screen ones).

also before the format and once during the format when i start my computer it would load up (i can hear the noises) but my monitor woudl just blink and stay off and all the lights on my keyboard would be on. So i tried removing a ram i just bought thinking it might be cuasing the problem and it fixed it and my computer restarted and i go ta message saying my computer speed was improper. I doubt its the ram i bought tho its a kingston ram from a reputable store. I think just removing a piece of the hardware let the computer fix itself .

helpOh dear oh dear.

Do you have another computer that you can use to reformat this drive? Lets find out first if the hard drive is shot.

Other than that, you might want to try reducing the PC to bare minimun of components before attempting to reinstall. If all goes well this time, you know that one of your remaining components is causing the problem.it would be interesting AND helpful to know why the computer needed tot be reformatted and some details about the machine.l Did you TOUCH anything else when in there changing the RAM?

Details are needed for help. I formatted because my computer was infested with viruses, when i boot i get like 100 messages saying this program was not run and missing some search101 files and other crap like that. Also i had like 1 gig left in my 80 gig hd and I am unsure of how i lost all that space i figured formatting woudl clear up my computer.

CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.8G
Motherboard Asus P4S800
Memory 2xDDR 512mb RAM (1024mb)
Hard Drive W.D. 80G 7200RPM
CD-ROM/CDRW LG 52X32X52 CDRW
Video Card Sapphire ATI 9600 256MB
Sound Card 5.1 Channel On Board
Networ Card 10/100 LAN On Board
Case & Power Standard Mid-Tower 4+2 Case & 400W

Another thing you guys should know is that one day i woke up to the smell of burning metal . I realized my fan stopped WORKING and my computer severely overheated. I tunred it off to let it cool down and started it back up ever SINCE then I got more blue screens of death than before.

I think i might do what u said rob, what would the bare minimums be, should i take out both 512 rams or leave one in, take out the video card? And no i didnt touch anything else when changing the ram, just popped open the two ram holders and pulled the ram out and left the older ram in (thats been workign fine for oover 2 years now).

When i try to go into my recovery thing it asks for a password, i tried the old admin pw i used and tried leaving it blank but no luck.

Hope this help you guys in helping me

This is the blue screen message, took some of itdown

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP: 0x000000D1 (0xFFBFF300, 0x00000001, 0x91BB244AA)

My computer restarts to interrupt the windows setup or this message shows up, the restart happens more tho.Uh-oh.

Was it your processor fan that died, your power supply fan, graphics card fan or an auxilliary fan?

For most motherboard you only need to leave one stick of memory in. You will also need to leave in a video card, unless your motherboard has onboard video.

But the nurning smell is actually characteristic of an overheated circuit board/solder. Something may be damaged irreparably. Processor? Motherboard? Hard to say.

Very bad luck.the powersupply fan died, but it works now, well most of the time. Here and there it stops working and i have to give it a good bang to get it up again .

If the motherboard or processor got fried during the overheating then why was it working decently for the last 2 months or so and just failed during the format? Maybe something in the format is causing the computer to restart or bring a blue screen.Maybe something with a known faulty power supply is causing problems. An appropriate replacemenet would be the best place to start if you want to revive this beast. The powersupply i have right now has a bunch of multicoluoured wires coming out of it and connects to my motherboard and some other stuff. looks kinda intimidating to replace . If i buy a new powersupply would it come in the same style as this one? A box with fan and power (i guess) and has a hole with bunch of wires coming out of it. nive....... LOL ...Don't be intimidated by the wires ........ they all end up in the same place ..... and there are the appropriate plugs pre installed on the end.
So all you really have to do is ..... check the form factor of your case ...... It's probably a ATX ....... and check to see if the connector that plugs into the mobo..... has 20 pins or 24 pins....... most new power supplies now come with an adapter ...... just be sure to get one that has the necessary wattage ......... for your system .

dl65 also gonna get one that i can return incase i still get the error after replacing the powersupply. and before i replace the powersupply ill remove my hd move it to this computer (my p3) and try reformatting then moving it back.

ill let u guys know what happens after i try these 2 options.I just turned my computer off for an hour then restarted it and it went very far during the windows setup (the lite blue screen that installs with the green bar at the bottom left). however the blue screen came again. I think if i let me powersupply cool off for a long time it installs until it gets a bit hotter and hits its break point and then the blue screen comes. Im gonna turn it off and try it tomorrow and see how far it gets. I really think if i can get past the setup and have windows setup it will stop bluescreenign me every min *sigh* At what point will you, too, admit that you have a bad power supply? We all have already. I got my new powersupply and i hooked it up (wasnt as hard as i thought it would be, i did hurt my hand a bit while taking one of the plugs out pulled it hard and bumped into the edge of video card ). Anyway so far so good with the windows setup no blue screen yet, but one problem. I had to take those caps off that make my mouse and keyboard USB plug into the round ones since the round ones at the back of my computer wasnt working. Now my 2 usb slots at the front of comp are taken up. I dont think i missed any plugging spots for the 2 rounds (non usbs forgot name) in the back. ANy ideas?

EDIT***

Great, 5mins left for the installation and i get the blue screen...gonna reformat all over again and see what happens since the last partition was with the messed up powersupply. The round ones are called PS/2 connectors. THere are only two on a machine and yours aren't working? Were they working before? Green is for mouse and purple is for keyboard.

I am glad you got the new power supply in WITHOUT much incident. THey are not that hard to replace as you found out.

Let us know.
The ps/2 were working before. Well I don't think my powersupply is the problem. I thought it was at first because the installation and everything seemed perfectly fine after i put in the new one, then right before it fully finishes i got the blue screen. Now its coming a bit more often then the first time i put in the new psupply. I dunnno this is annoying .

Solve : unable to reload OS?

Answer»

Hi from Guyana South America,
my computer is giving me all manners of problems. I have backed up all my files and would like totally format my harddrive and reinstall xp. the problem I am having is that my computer REFUSES to boot from the cd. when I try to auto run it from mycomputer, I get a MESSAGE telling me the version of windows that is installed is newer than the disk. My disk is xp pro sp1.
any help would be greatly appreciated.Put in the CD and restart the computer. When it say "Press any key to boot from CD" then do so. Format the drive and reinstall. There you go.

If possible, load SP2, turn on the firewall and install some Antivirus before even connecting the wire to access the internet. Hi Sarge,
If I had a dime for every time I've tried that I'd buy a new computer and throw this one over the hill. I'm wondering now if I uninstall sp2 if that will totally mess things up or can I try that as a last resort. XP has been acting RATHER funny for a while , but have been able to live with it till now. any other suggestions? :-/Autorunning it is not the solution because of the problem you described. You cannot do what you need from a running Windows installation.

Can you set it in the BIOS to boot from the CD before the hard drive? That is the answer. I am taking it that you have a real XP CD rather than some sort of restore DISC. These are all bootable IF the machine has the CORRECT boot order. It doesn't matter what has been previously loaded on the machine.

if all else fails, try firing up the command prompt and use the attrib command. attrib /? for helpheres what i would do...

1. SELECT "search" from the star menu.
2. type in the file name that u hid
3. select "more advanced options"
4. check "search hidden files and folders"
5. run the search
8. it should find your folder(s)
9. if u dont want them to be hidden anymore, right click the file folder and select "properties" and under attributes UNCHECK "hidden"

Solve : XP locks up?

Answer»

Just built Intel Pentium Dual Core 820, MSI 945P Platinum motherboard, 1G DDR2 memory, 128M NVidia video, 160G SATA drive. XP Pro locks up in about 2 minutes after boot even if I do nothing. UPDATED all drivers and removed all hardware except cpu, memory, video, and disk. BIOS setup with fail-SAFE defaults. Computer does not lock up in safe mode. How do I determine what is the problem?WCM:

Check for overheating: Is the heatsink firmly connected to the processor and did you use plenty of heatsink grease (if required)? Does the heatsink require a fan? Is the power supply fan and any case fan spinning properly?

Check for overtaxing the power supply: Do the demands of all the hardware devices exceed the wattage output of the power supply? If so, install one with a higher wattage output capacity.

DocI think I found it. I turned off all of the startup programs and by PROCESS of elimination it turned out to be the MSI Core Center that monitors the temp, etc. I uninstalled it and everything works fine. I installed MSI PC Alert 4 and when I turn it on it locks up. I guess trying to monitor the temp CAUSES a problem.

Any help on any of these problems would be MUCH appreciated..THANKS!!!! Please EMAIL me suggestions..THANKS again! You have the earmarks of an infestation. How about downloading and running Hijack This and posting the log file here for analysis by our resident EXPERTS. You will need several posts to include it all.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

You can use TASK Manager to SEE what all is running at startup. That can cause slowdowns as well, but let's make sure the system is clean irst.

Are you running your scans in Safe Mode with Sytem Restore turned off? You didn't post any specific information on what operating system, so we will assume XP.

What specific programs are you running for protection? Hopefully only one antivirus is loaded. More than one can cause problems, and providers rarely give you something more than an e-mail scanner.

Solve : Windows Components Wizard?

Answer»

I have a QUESTION about the Windows Components Wizard that I was wondering if someone who knows would be kind enough to answer. My OS is XP Home with Service Pack 2. The instructions READ: "To add or REMOVE a component, click the checkbox." The word "or" is what's confusing me. Are the instructions trying to tell me that if a specific component's box is checked, if that component is installed, it will be removed, AND if that component is removed it will be installed? In other words, all checked components will go "vice-versa" of their state before the Wizard is run? The reason I ask is because I am trying a trick from a book entitled "Windows XP Hacks" that uninstalls Windows Messenger (never once used it; never will). And if my understanding is correct, how can you tell whether a specific component is removed or installed? Is there a way, or are you just supposed to work with one component at a time (in other words,do you need to know beforehand if a specific component is removed or installed)? Thank you to all who take the time to answer my question!Yes if you uncheck it, it will be removed. If it was blank and you check it, it will be added.

Be careful with hacks, tweaks, etc. You can get yourself in serious trouble. Absolutely! That's exactly why I copied the file (sysoc.inf, by the way) before I ever EVEN opened it. Thanks for taking the time to help! You're welcome. I hope that gets you all fixed up.

Solve : My Partition is Missing?

Answer»

Hi!

Yesterday I wanted to resize one of my PARTITIONS and give some of its precious gigabytes to a smaller one.
I opened up Partition Magic 8 and did what I do (I've done this before a couple of times),
but when it was working a couple of errors appeared and the operation ABORTED itself (before the restart).
Unfortunately I can't remember what those error messages said...
"Bah, nevermind" I thought, and shut down Partition Magic.

Later I realised my most important partition is missing (I couldn't find it anywhere via Windows)!
So I open Partition Magic again:
my partition (E) is still there, but it is marked as Extended.
An error check returns:

Quote

Error 1608: File record marked used, File 110
On this site I thought I found the answer, but I can't run CHKDSK on an invisible partition.

I use Windows XP PROFESSIONAL, and the drive is S-ATA.

I hope that description was good enough! If not, please ask.
I also hope someone can help, as I have ALL my documents on that partition;
music, photos, videos, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Magnus Granås First keep in mind that all hard drives die eventually and there is no substitute for a backup on secure media - CD, DVD, etc.

Also, Partition Magic and similar programs can be amazing, but in case of a disaster like this you are frequently SOL.

If that is a legal copy, I would CONTACT the manufacturer immediately before that drive gets any more action to get this resolved.

PM has it's own tools to help as well as the Windows tools, which will probably not be available or terribly helpful.

Thanks.

A friend recommended me a data recovery tool, UNDELETE,
and I managed to retrieve all my FILES again
The invisible partition was listed in that programme as Local Disk ( 1: )

Solve : Two huge problem with Windows Home Edition!!!?

I got this problem that i have never seen befor when i try to start up windows it only goes to the screen where you select safe mode, start in the last cofigured settings or just start it normal but if i choose anyone of em it just goes black and everytime i press like space or something it reboots the only THING i can do is to get in to the bios(MSI) and when i try to reinstall it goes fine intill it asks me if i agree on the terms of bla bla bla then when i press f8 a blue screen comes saying at the top Registry and a other word but i can remember Then when i press space the same thing happiens reboot so i got no controle of the pc now i can't do a *censored* with it not even format or anything! I REALLY need help, this is my last hope befor i have to pay lotsa money to a computer store just to look at it. Whats WRONG?! i got an other problem

This was befor this happiend and oh by the way i got a custom pc if that has anything to do with any of my probs ok back to my other prob this has been going on since i got the pc fresh almost everytime i install drivers lets say forexample a new ATI driver and i reboot it appers a blue screen saying this migth be happening becuase of a newly installed driver or software or something like that but sometimes it happiens without me installing any thing and i really want to fix this prob becuase it has annoyd me ever since i got the pc.

Well that is mainly my biggest probs so i hope you guys know what this is and can help me

Please replay to my probs!

Thanks! The info you gave is a bit vague. It could be faulty memory. It could be a faulty power supply. It could be a faulty mobo. It could be a lot of things. Did you replace your mobo right before this started happening or something? Maybe your CPU is overheating, I sort of doubt that, but worth a check. Maybe the caps on your graphics card is starting to leak. The started happening after you did what or after what happened?

Please provide more details. Quote

You SAID you got a problem when you installed your ATI drivers. Does your PC have onboard graphics?

If so. Take out the ATI graphics card and try to start Windows from the onboard graphics.

Yes actualy 1 time it worked like a charm regreat formating it i had no reason to back then, but can't you or anyone help me?!
Ok this might take a while to figure out what is exactly wrong.
So if I understand you correctly you reformatted it for some reason and then you started having these problems.
First what did you exactly do?
Have you tried to reinstall windows with the repair option?
Have you tried to use system restore?

Ok no like i said in my first post i have been having small probs ever since i got it so i have been formating ALOT... what i did was that i rebooted then everything was *censored*. I can't install as i said in my first post and i can't repair pr use sustem restore if i try that it only goes to a blue screen showing my some gay text bla bla bla. so you see im kinda stuck i'v run out of ideas... well i thougt about restarting my ram or my bios by pressing a button but the last time i did that it *censored* everything up so i don't know what to do!My advice at this point is something you probably don't want to do, but I would start with the original restore CD's that came with the computer and start the whole process over. If you run into a problem with that then you would know for sure what is wrong. I.E. If it stops with an error just installing Windows you probably have a memory problem.
Let me know what you think of this idea?
Troubleshooting a problem in the middle of trying other fixes generally takes so long it is easier to just start over.
I hope you have backed up any imortant information that you have created.

Well you see..... i kinda diden't get such cds only a Windows Home Edition Sp2 included that's all, so im still screwd but thx for trying to help man! please keep coming with ideas You need to do a full reinstall and then we can try to sort any remaining problems out. You said you do have a Windows CD? Then put it in and reboot the machine.I would unplug all of the drives, sound cards ect. only leave the hard drive pluged in. if that works, HOOK up the cd drive, and see if you can repair windows, or atleast get past the EULA.

Another question, hwo much ram does the computer havr in it? and if you can, swap it out, and add more.as i said befor i can't reinstall! and unplugging everything will just take a load of time so i guess that i must use cash now

and i got 1024 RAM Quote

Solve : WinXP booting issue?

Answer»

Hi there,

I have a Acer Travelmate 360 Series laptop with WinXP home installed on it, today I relised the video card drivers I had installed were really old ones so I downloaded and installed the latest drivers I could find.
The video card is Intel830M, after installing the new drivers without any dramas it then rebooted the computer as it said it would, after loading the WinXP splash screen nothing else shows up on the screen.
I can still hear the system start up and I even typed my password in and accessed my login account but I did this with a blank screen infront of me.

Obviously this was caused by the new video card drivers, is there a way of REVERTING back to the old drivers?

I tried using the system restore point from the windows boot MENU but the same thing happened.
I tried booting into safe mode from the boot menu, but it DOESNT load.
I tried booting with VGA mode from the boot menu but still nothing.
So basically WinXP still loads but nothing appears on the screen after the XP Splash screen.

I remember I downloaded a Linux based OS called Knoppix a while back so I PUT it in my laptop and got it working just fine, I had a look at my hard drives contents and everything is still there.

If someone could help I would appreciate it!

Thanks
Regards MattDid you get the drivers from the Acer site or elsewhere? The drivers you need are here:

http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/portal20.cfm?website=AcerPanAm.com/us&siteid=7293&areaid=7&formid=3394&LINKTEXT=Drivers%20%26%20Downloads

No, I actually got them from Intel's website.
Perhaps I've got the wrong ones?Always get them from the manufacturer's website, and never from Microsoft!microsoft has a way of screwing its SELF over, windows is a good example of this, as it runs, it destroy's its self, slowly, but givin time, it will kill its self completly... thus the reason why i dont trust microsoft, cant even program there OS's right...

Solve : XP Pro reinstal problems?

Answer»

Hello,
I had an issue with my Xp Pro as in it was running real slow & strange. The start up & close down screens were also different amongst other anomalies. Originally I had SP1 installed off a copy of a windows CD with a vaild COA & then downloaded SP2 off MS web site.
Anyway system got bogged down & when I went to reinstal O/S MS advised COA was no longer a valid unit. Bought a Dell reinstal CD ( new & sealed) with a valid COA which installed OK but left me with a SORT of duplicate instal. IE In Explorer it would show the user twice in the root directory with the same folders eg: in Docs & Settings it shows Administrator & Administrator xxxx;User 1& User 1 xxxx & so on.
When reinstalling I chose the option to PERFORM a clean instal then did it again with the repair option but still gave the same results.
I am now of the opinion I need a complete 'from scratch' instal, so I guess my question is can I do this with the Dell CD or do I need to purchase a new copy. I have been checking E Bay for clues on what is available & there appears to be different versions- upgrade, 'New in a box', a Dell version like I have or a hologram Cd with just a booklet.
My unit is 1.27ghz Athlon XP 512RAM 40gbHDD & Gigabyte7VM400M-RZ
If anyone has any clues or suggestions they will be welcome. Pls advise if further info needed.I Depends of the Dell CD you have

If you have one That is just a windows CD re-branded you can, This is likely the CASE

but if its a Dell Recovery CD , you should also be able to , and now you have 2 licences : After installing 3 time MS make it harder for you but if you ring the phone number on the Activate Screen they will give you a good Activation CodeThe CD is green with 'Operating System already installed on your system' Reinstallation CDDo you have the option to format the drive prior to installation? Some makers call this a "Destructive Install".No, I don't think so. Does the limit of 3 instals count from actual instals or activations?

Solve : hard disk space.?

Answer»

Hey guys.

I have a question about hard disk space. I have a 71 gig hd, with about 7-8gig LEFT. But when I go to the "my computer" button, double click on the c drive, and READ the tool tips, it only shows about 12 gigs as being used.

Any idea on how to CHECK this, and yes, it seems I have alot of space used for the few programs i have installed.

Running WINDOWS xp, sp2
I did run ccleaner, and spyware doctor. Did not seem to make a diffrence.I have never seen a 71 gig drive, but make sure you are free of viruses and spyware first. Did you do your scans from safe mode with system restore off? Is the Recycle Buin empty? How much hard drive space does it seem you have used and unused? Do you have the option set to SHOW hidden/system files?

Solve : Windows XP Startup password?

Answer»

hy guys
my FRIEND setted me a startup password on windows XP poffessional SP2, it comes before the login screen and says: Your PC is locked, (or something), and the captoin is : MICROSOFT Windows XP Startup password...
can anyone help me out getting it out without reinstalling the windows?
thxIt Depends

Did your Friend Set up the Administrator Account?
If he did then you have a problem,
Else , if you logon as administrator you can change the passwords of any user's by going in to user accounts in control Paneli cant do anything..... i have a administration pass..... but cant even log... i come and only thing i can do is or put the password, than log with my user and pass, or press restart button.... first time i see such *censored* thing in Winodws.... but i need help urgently... anyone? What Happens when you Put in your User name and Password , do you get logged in?

If you have the admin password you can change any setting you want.
What Exactly do you want to change?I cant do anything!! it comes directly after the picture of the Windows loading.... before i can enter my username and password.... i know it sucks.... but i still need help..You could maybe try this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

Don't know if it would exactly help, but if you are really desperate and have no alternative, why not.

Maybe he installed some security/lock application that works out of the registry.

no no..... it's not a registry corruption... i think it's a built-in tool for windows.... still i need help... and i wont reinstall window...
anyone?Bios password :-? - try this.

Googling for Windows XP bios password brought up lotsa info

Good luckDoes it say

"This computer is Locked only User or Administrator can unlock it"
Or some thing LIKE that.

If So Press Ctrl+Alt+Deli found the prob... actually i need to find a backdoor to the software DriveCrypt Plus... that's the one how setted me a pre-boot pass
anyone can help on it?
i dunno if this wud be any help but it happened to me. i only have 1 account. called "Troy". but when i started my computer up insafe mode, there was a seperate "admin","guest" and "troy" acount i could log into.that is not the same case... MINE cant get into the login screen were are the users... anyone know someone who can help bypassing the DriveCrypt plus software?
thxIf it is a legal copy you could ask the manufacturer. It may be yes or no depending on the specifics of the product.

http://www.securstar.com/

As it sells for $77, I doubt you have a legal product there if your friend "just put it on".

You may be faced with a reinstall. Do you have a legal Windows CD?actually i dont know.. i never heard about it and never saw it on my PC... i guess it was on my friend PORTABLE 300G hard drive when he copied it....As above:

Solve : clear up printer port?

Answer»

Hi,

I have this PROBLEM here. I have a printer, Fuji Xerox that is CONNECTED to the network via IP address. To be able to access to the printer, one has to install the driver on each computer. My problem is that i deleted the printer by going to START -> printers and faxes -> delete the printer from there. However, when i came back to re-install the printer by putting in the same IP address again. it said that the port has already existed. use a different one.

How do i clear up the port in windows XP? coz that printer has got a static IP address and i want to be able to reconnect to it. This morning, i thought if i repaired the windows, it'd solve the problem but i was wrong. It still doesn't help at all.

Thank you in advanceDo you have any printers connected to this workstation locally? By parallel or USB?

Do you have the original Fuji installation CD?

If you go to Start-->Control Panel-->And and remove programs, are there any Fuji programs LISTED there? You may need to remove them before you do the reinstallation.

Solve : Bluetooth driver hogging memory?

Answer»

Ever since i installed bluetooth, i've been having computer problems - my computer boots, runs fine for a couple of hours, then starts running graduately slower.

When i started regularly looking in the task manager i noticed my bluetooth driver is hogging memory - as in, drawing more and more SYSTEM resources to itself, untill finally (if left alone) my computer simply crashes through the strain.

When i disable the bluetooth PROGRAM that hogs the memory, it keeps coming back...

Help, please ? I'm going insane here... It sounds like your BlueTooth Driver has a memory Leak

Try getting an updated Driver of the Website.

Also What do you mean by Driver?, usually you can not see drivers running in task manager. it may not be your blue tooth

Post a hijack this log here and show us your system. you may have a problem thats causing this.

Do you use any ANTI Virus or Ad/spy/Mal Ware Protection?Well, seeing as i've disabled the bluetooth for now untill i can get my hands on new drivers - i can just flick the data over USB if i really have to - i can't get the actual file - but the exe that was running and hogging the memory was BTWINSD.EXE or somesuch... that's about all i know.

Do't run any virus /malware protection (Shame on me, i know) and i run a hardware firewall, so i doubt that has something to do with it either...

Thanks!!!!JanieRyan...... Before I run throught this logfile again , what was found in safe mode by the AV app?
You did remove all the items I detailed with hijackthis didnt you , because they all appear to still be there ?
What was found in normal mode with Ewido ?

Why are all those Desktop messenger entries still there ?
Did you remove it as I suggested ?

dl65 Hacker,
Sorry, I didn't see your post until after I posted the last log file. I was looking at Sage's post that requested I post the log again after I fixed all the stuff found by Edwido.
I will attempt to delete the things you stated in your post. I've never used HJT before, so I'll see if I can figure out how to delete them as you've said.
In safe mode my AV found nothing - all was good.
In normal mode, the things that were found by Edwido have all been fixed/quarantined so I don't remember what they were.
Like I said, I will fix what you've said, and then post another log file.
Thanks for your help (and patience). I did another CCleaner, Ewido and AV scan, deleted the items in HJT, and have another log file (after) everything was completed. Hopefully this is the last log file post and everything is now good. I'll wait eagerly to hear if all is well.
Thanks

Thanks !!!JanieRyan......... for some reason this entry wasn't removed . I don't know if you missed marking it or it's just being persistant .
Before you attempt to remove it again with hijackthis , go into control panel / add/remove PROGRAMS and see if theres anything in the that looks like .......... Mscnt if there is uninstall it .

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mscnt] c:\windows\system32\mscnt.exe /nocomm

So lets try it again ........ make sure there is a check mark in the box in front of it and then click on the "fix checked box".

Now , before you do another hijackthis scan , go into c:\windows\system32\ and see if there is an entry called mscnt.exe . Hope fully there will not be one ........ if there is delete it .

Now then run hijackthis again and see if that 04 entry is now gone .

let us know .

dl65 I went into the areas you indicated and there was nothing there that I needed to delete.
I ran a HJT scan again, deleted the entry, ran a scan again and now it is gone.

Now what? Am I fixed?

ThanksJanieRyan...... Well done ....... Your system appears to be clean again .......
You should remember to turn back on System Restore on all drives .
Create a test doc and check to be sure things are working ok.

dl65 Thanks for all your help !!
This forum is excellent, I'm so glad it exists.

Glad things are sorted for you, JR. Fab work dl65.dl65 and Fed are the Hijack Kings!

Solve : programs making computer crash?

Answer»

when irun games on my computer after 5 mins they lag up and then crash my computer.
its the same with videos in the 1st second they are jumpy and u can hear the VOICES are out of timing with their movements, and its is very choppy. any ideas?chris, I'm going to post the link to your other forum topic here because I see them as being related: System Idle Process. I think mention should be made here of the gist of your other topic, that you took your computer to a repair service after it was damaged by an electrical storm or power surge, and the power supply was replaced.

I have a suspicion you either still have power supply issues or, even worse, the damage to your computer was more extensive than the power supply. In other, perhaps your motherboard or other components sustained some damage but not enough to render it completely inoperable. As far as I know, if computer components fail due to power surge damage, they are probably going to fail completely right after the power surge incident, but I'm not absolutely sure. So, again, I wonder whether the final resolution of this is going to get more expensive for you.

Do you know the Wattage rating of the power supply they installed? Do you the brand and model number? Can you verify that the fan in the power supply is working? And are we sure they are not heat related. Is GAMING the thing that produces the CRASHES? Can you TAKE off the side and blow a fan in there and game away for a while? Any difference at all? WHat kind of case fans do you have?

Solve : file deletion?

Answer»

I copied a movie ONTO my laptop, but when I try to delete it, I get a message stating that I can't delete it, because it's being used by another person or program, EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT!!! Would someone please tell me how to rectify this sometime this century? I'd appreciate it. Thanks.Killbox can delete hard to remove things. Are you sure you are free from malware?

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.phpDear GX1_Man:

I don't know about the malware, but I'll try Killbox tonight. Thanks a lot, dude. are u perhaps seeding the movie via a BITTORRENT client or p2p software? (ex. LIMEWIRE, BIT Comet, Kazaa Lite, etc.)Dear Homer:

I burned it from Ares on my work computer, then I saved it on my laptop from a data disc. Incidentally, Killbox couldn't delete it, so I don't know how to get rid of this freaking thing! Try Killbox in Safe Mode.Roger that.If killbox in safe mode doesn't work try cacls. All you have to do is open up a command prompt and type 'cacls directory/filename /p guest:n'. Then reboot the machine. Then you can delete it by GOING back to command prompt and typing 'del directory/filename -y'. That should do it.Dear Raped Ape (sorry about that, btw):

Thanks a heap, guy.
