Solve : Files and Settings Transfer wizard problem?

Answer»

I want to TRANSFER my email setting from one COMPUTER to another.  Both have XP PRO. Both have Outlook.  The can ping each other successfully, but while the old computer shows the other 3 computers and itself in it's network places, the the new computer shows the other computers and not itself.   I though network apperances ranked secondary to IP pings.  Also, all four computers are sharing the same internet connection successfully

However, when I ASK the old computer to send it's settings to the new computer,  it claims it "can't locate the new computer", even though it lists the new computer in it's network places.

I did pull a folder off another computer successfully but unfortunately I put my mail on the wrong computer.

Any suggestions as to what I might do to make a successful transfer?

Solve : "Windows Media Player Cannot Play the File"?

Answer» HELLO,

I need help.  When I try to use Media Player, a box comes up saying"Windows Media Player cannot play the file.  If the file is located on the Internet, connect to the Internet.  If the file is on removable storage card, insert the storage card."

I have tried everything.  AOL sent me a list of things to do, and I have done that.  I am on AOL, when trying to play the Media Player.

I RECENTLY signed on to Verizon Broadband.  I did not have this problem prior to that, however- when I originally signed up for Media Player, it took me a long TIME and much assistance to reach success.

This is so FRUSTRATING, as I spent hours and hours getting ONTO Broadband, then I could not get on to AOL, then I spent hours working on that.  Now I have spent hours working on this without success.

I hope someone can help me.  Thanks for your time and assistance.

K- in VirginiaCould you maybe elaborate a bit more, exactly what happens when you do what? What are you trying to play? Is it a movie or music on your hard drive or are you streaming from the internet? If its a movie you are trying to watch, maybe you don't have the right codecs installed.Your post is confusing.  You are "on AOL" and you recently "signed on to Verizon Broadband."  What, exactly, is your Internet Service Provider?

And, what do you mean by "signed up for Media Player"?  I use Windows Media Player but I never "signed up" or it.  I use it because it's on all Windows computers.

What versions of Windows are you using?  What version of Windows Media Player?  What was the "list of things to do" that AOL sent you?

Can you play a music CD using Media Player?  When you insert a music CD in your CD drive, what happens?

What do you want to use Media Player for?  Music from CD's?  Music downloaded from the Internet?  Movies on DVD?  Online content for Music, Movies, Entertainment, Radio, Current Events, etc?

Solve : Export?

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to know how to export the rules I create in Outlook EXPRESS so that I can COPY them on an other computer.

Thank You

Almn
Not positive but I don't THINK that's an option on outlook express. MAYBE check the MS site for any add-ons or something. I COULD be wrong but it's free software and usually there are no options like that available.

Solve : Restart problem x_x?

Answer»

My computer is nothing if not old and decrepit, and one of the THINGS it's picked up in it's old age is a particular bad habit. Said habit caused my computer to suddenly restart every time something is connected or disconnected from it. This even extends to things like my scanner and my DSL box, which don't plug directly into the computer itself. Which gets annoying, especially when one of the steps NECESSARY to updating the firmware for my DSL involved unplugging and then plugging it back in, in the midst of the update.

Is this just a preference setting or something like that I don't know about or a flaw in Windows that has been burned into this poor old machine's increasingly addled brain? And, more importantly, how the *censored* do I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, becasue this is far and away beyond my comprehension.

Thanks millions ^_^

Note: If it helps anyone, I'm running the basic Windows 98Nice to know your operating system but what about any specifics on the computer?Well...What would you like to know? I'm not really sure what else might pertain to the problem or I would've added it ^_^Processor and make/model or motherboard can be helpful. "Old and decrepit" does not give any idea of the vintage components. What is the history of the problem? When did it start? Are these just USB things that cause this? That kind of stuff. In order:

1: Intel Pentium II
2: The first time I remember this happening was last July, and since no one in the family knew anytihng about the problem, it's been ignored entirely up to this point.
3: No, anything connected to the computer in any way being connected or disconnected causes the problem. This includes USB connections, the mouse, the scanner (which is connected to the computer through the surge protector we have), etc.

Again, thanks for still trying to help ^_^Oh_Knats.......   When you use the term plugging in or unplugging ...... are you refering to the main power ( the chords that are plugged into the surge protector ? ) If this is the CASE , it sounds like the circuit that the surge protector is using is overloaded , or has a bad connection in it .....  As a test , connect the computer to a differant wall recepticle ( use a extension chord )and try a differant surge protector ........ I believe that its either a failing part in the surge protector ...or the circuit feeding it is overloaded to the point of ...whenever you plug something into it , there is a voltage drop and the built in voltage sensitive protection in the computer sees it and shuts down ......

BTW , is there anything else plugged into the surge protector other than the computer ?

dl65  Yeah, that's when it seems to happen, but the same thing happens when I connect or disconnect from a USB. Regardless, you may be on to something; there are a crapload of things plugged into the surge protector, including some that aren't even related to the computer. Of course, I have no idea which cords belong to the computer itself, so this is going to take awhile to try lol.

Thanks ^_^Scratch that...No dice.I connected to a NEW, perfectly functioning surge-protector we had elsewhere and it had the same problem. And, it seems the only time it actually restarts is when something is plugged into it (again, whether by USB or any other method), disconnecting things doesn't seem to have an effect. It's still a problem, however, because several updates I NEED to make require disconnecting and reconnecting things.

Any ideas, anyone?Do you shut down the USB devices down before unplugging or just pull the plug?Pull the plug, but that shouldn't cause a restart, especially with the DSL box, which actually instructs you to do so.

Solve : Microsoft Outlook Crash...Help!?

Answer»

My coworker's Outlook crached today.  When she re-started the program she was unable to ACCESS any of the FILES.  When we try to access the Personal Folders file we get an error that reads "Errors have been detected in the file ....  Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then USE the Inbox Repair Tool."

I looked in the help and couldn't find anything about an "Inbox Repair Tool."  Fortunately we had backed-up her most recent e-mails a few days prior, but we're still missing some information SENT Mail folder, older messages, and messages since the back-up.  Do we have any hope for recovering the information?

Thanks!Have a read here:

Solve : Understanding Virtual Memory?

Answer»

I think I may be misunderstanding the concept of virtual memory and page faults. For sundry reasons, I turned off virtual memory and ran my system purely on RAM. Next, I checked Task Manager and noticed that all of my programs were still recording page faults. My LIMITED understanding caused me to think that since the term page fault is defined as: "A virtual memory interrupt that signals that the next instruction or item of data is not in physical memory and must be swapped back in from the disk," that, naturally, turning VM off would lead to zero page faults. Not so. Why?

Thanks in advance.

--OoberWindows is Built on the Concept of VM, if you turn it off windows will overide your setting and make a Emergency VM file

VM is like a ram over Flow on your HDD
Its there to keep the data of Big slow programs access able wit out haveing to query the source files again and again.

Your Ram is for the data that Changes Quickly , EG the Graphics in a Game,
Where the VM keeps all The images tha the game will use as textures , but arent Needed right now, then when there needed it calls them to ram

So if you Trun off VM your Stoping your computer from Loading thing properly

This is not the Best Explenation youll get , you should Google for some better info
Hmm...  Not quite.

I think you might be confusing Windows' page file with Windows' virtual memory system.  Whilst you can turn off the page/swap file (which as panboy says is to be AVOIDED really), you cannot turn off the virtual memory system.  This is the memory architecture upon which Windows is built.  "Virtual memory" is the way that Windows views all memory, whether it be RAM or held on a hard drive swap file.

A page fault can occur either where a piece of memory that has been swapped out can't be swapped back in again, or where a program tries to access memory that it does not own.  A system riddled with page faults suggests either hardware problems or systemic software problems caused by e.g. viral activity or hard drive corruption.  A less likely cause in your case would simply be bad programming, but in that case the errors would probably be limited to just the one program that was badly written.oh thats right VM is all the memory after the Frist meg Of Protected System memory, were you need to use memory managers like Himem.sys for Anything after 1mb

I dont know if computers still have the one meg of memory limet. it was part of the 386 architecture, they are realy still 386s only they have more Transisters now. or have they MADE a major change?Er... you're thinking of the bad old DOS days.  Memory management is rather different under Win2k/XP, fortunately.Ummm, where can I go to see my jolly good page fault list/report/log? Quote

Hmm...  Not quite.

I think you might be confusing Windows' page file with Windows' virtual memory system.
INDEED I was. My formative computing years were spent with 68k Macs back in the good ol' days of dual double density disk drives, system 6.0.1, and multi-finder (actually, 7.6.1 is still the best version, IMO ). In the Mac world of computing, virtual memory was approached a bit differently (unless I was misunderstanding that too... a very real possibility). You had physical memory and if you so chose you could turn on virtual memory to utilize your hard disk if your RAM was running low. That was it. The VM system was either completely on or completely off. If you ran out of memory it was rather unpleasant.

Fast forward about a decade or more and now I'm using Windoze. I'm still trying to separate the concept of a page file from virtual memory. I think I'm coming along. I'll have to Google this subject a bit more though.

Hardware problems are unlikely and viral activity is even less likely. My HD seems fine so far, but you never can tell for sure with those wily things... All of my proggys seem to be recording normal levels of page faults for a 512 MB RAM system, except, that is, for FireFox 1.5.0.4. After an evening of browsing I'm up around 2.5 million page faults. Does anyone else have the same experience with FF? That was the original reason for my disabling of the page file. I wanted to see what would happen if FF couldn't use the HD to write information to.

"Ummm, where can I go to see my jolly good page fault list/report/log?"

I'm simply using the Task Manager's process tab, but if you use run>>perfmon you can view some basic page file information. For even more info, right click the graph, select 'add counter', select 'memory' from the performance object list, and then add the desired counters. You can see heaps (pun intended) of information about your memory.

So, a page file is simply the allotted space for page faults, but if no page file exists Windows will go ahead and use a portion of the HD anyway for necessary faulting, but not as much as if you had specified the recommended 150% or so of your HD?

Computers. Argh.

I'm sure that's right; Mac OSes had a different memory model to Windows - probably more Unix-like.  Nowadays though I suspect we will see a convergence, as more people want to run Windows on Mac hardware.  Not sure that's a great idea.  It's not as if the Windows memory management system is bulletproof.  I'd like to say that Linux does a good job in this area, but it's all to easy for rogue or incompetent programmers (like me!!!) to create buffer overflows.

Quote

Do you see this level of page faults with a fresh install?  I must admit it's not something I have ever investigated, or indeed cared about.  These days, as long as things are working, I spend very little time looking "under the hood"!

You're seeing the problem with Firefox, so maybe it's worth a Bugzilla report?  That said, I doubt that this is a unique problem.  I am aware that memory usage is something the dev team are wrangling with (have been since pre-version 1).  Probably for most users the advantages of Firefox outweigh this (virtually invisible) disadvantage.  It doesn't half chew through memory though!

No - it's more like Windows basically sees a monolithic section of memory which may or may not be composed of physical + hard drive memory.  A page fault can occur anywhere within that memory; just for disk memory, there's an additional cause of page faults.

That's my understanding, anyway.

Solve : Disabling the command prompt.?

Answer»

We're running log-on scripts that would delete the temporary files. The PROBLEM with it is that there are users who have huge amounts of temp files especially those who has internet access. So during log-on, the users would see the command prompt while it's emptying the temp folders. So my question is, is there anything that we can include in our script that would disable the command prompt so that no user would interfere with what the script is supposed to do?A "solution" would be to run those bats/scripts with another computer account credentials. So, if you have computerA, with 2 users, U1 and U2, which will use the computer. Create a 3RD user, U3; create an scheduled task, and set your task to run the bat (for deleting and other administrative tasks) under the U3 account, at computer start-up (if the users log-on many times, without the computer to be restarted, the task will only be executed at computer start-up), or to be run regularly - but this is a "dangerous" setting -> if your user just USES the files you want to modify?

Solve : Admin account spying??

Answer»

I recently purchased my NEW computer for college, and my dad, an engineer and very computer literate man, had it sent to him so he could set everything up for me. When he sent it to me (he lives across the country) there is my administrative account, an administrative account for him, and the regular (non-administrative account).
My question is this: why do I need two administrative accounts? I don't even have the password to "his" so there is no way I could even use it.
Also, is there a way for admin accounts to "spy" on non-admin accounts? Could his account be sending my INTERNET and program history to his email?

This is just one thing I have no clue on, and I may just be paranoid, but any insight and help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.I sense some paranoia here.  My hunch is your dad just set up the two admin accounts because he's accustomed to creating separate accounts for separate users.  And, since you could delete his admin account by going to Control Panel, User Accounts from your admin account, it's not very likely he created and left his admin account on the computer because of some spying scheme.

A direct approach here would be to simply call him and just say you were wondering whether both admin accounts need to be kept on the computer, and see what he says.

Did he install any spyware detection and removal programs on the computer?  Does it have a firewall, other than WINDOWS Firewall, installed?  If not, you should download, install, and use 2 or more spyware removal tools, such as Ad-aware, and Spybot Search & Destroy.  You can get these and many other programs from http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html.  If you have no firewall other than Windows Firewall, I suggest you download ZoneAlarm.  Windows Firewall only detects incoming traffic.  ZoneAlarm and other third party firewall programs detect both incoming and outgoing signals from your computer.  Do not run two firewalls at the same time.  If Windows Firewall is currently enabled, dissable it after installing another firewall.

Also, when you get to college, you'll probably FIND the college has some information for students from their IT department.  Check it out.

Or you could get VERY paranoid and surmise he installed some keyloggers on there so he could monitor ALL of your computer activity from across the country.

Again, good communication and honesty go a long way in resolviong this probably unimportant issue.  i it was me i i had decided i wanted to Do things to your computer , i would have installed the network monitor driver , combined with the right Microsoft Admin Tools , ^.^

Id Have Your CD Dirve Opening and closeing all Day Muhahaha

*Is Easaly amused*Ok, as my post was merely meant as a joke, and I can see how you might get it confused as advice

Maybe I should tell you What the Network Monitor Driver does

Basically it allows a MS administrator on a network to view all your Packet Data that is sent of RECEIVED on your network, it also allows administrative commands to be sent to the computer, and basically gives you full remote control.

It is in fact the Protocol Microsoft Networks can be built on with the Intent of spying on any thing a user might be doing, that is how it is related to this topic, now if you would like further explanation on the matter it can direct you to msdn.microsoft.com or www.google.com

If you are to continue to slander me , id suggest you have a look inside my Brain to see how much I know and don’t know before you assume that I am in fact the ignoramus you are making me out to be
You again leave in basking in your magnificent glow, can you wait a while I need to get some sunglasses before I find my self again in your presence, for fear of burnt retinas.

As for the contents of my Brain I never thought that you might not be able for my inferior level of knowledge as I was sure your intellect was on par with the NSA’s supper computers and would have no problem in deciphering the data.

Solve : Windows Won't Boot normally, I can get into safe M?

Answer»

I think it's the updates from Microsoft. Every time I do System Restore (had to do another this morning) it seems this happens the night:

Software DISTRIBUTION Service 2.0.

I googled it and this is one of the things I got: http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=421923

Seems the software dis. service from microsoft is messing everyone up.

Trying to google more to see if there's a fix.C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution

ReportingEvents.log

It seems that whatever the system is trying and fialing to install is effing up my computer. I looked through the log and everything is fine until a certain day when it downloads an UPDATE, then tries to install it every day. I'll post the log starting from that point in replies.{20A07BA3-1CE6-4AF1-8AF0-2E587BFFF1A6}      2006-06-14 09:14:41-0500      1      147      101      {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}      0      0      AutomaticUpdates      Success      Software Synchronization      Agent has finished detecting items.

Solve : Windows ME problems?

Answer»

Firstly, I apologise if this has been posted before and I just haven't seen it!  Also I'm not the best with technology so please be patient with me!

Last night I was having problems with Windows Media player, it wouldn't let me play files saying I needed a 55 codec or something.  This had happened once before and when I rebooted it was fine, so this time I rebooted.
When I did it came up in what looks like Safe Mode but isn't.  Since then I have ...
rebooted - no change
tried adware scans -  showed a date miner in the registry which I then deleted (was called Alexa, if that helps)
virus scans - showed nothing
system restore - wouldn't restore the pc to an earlier time

After all these things FAILED to help I tried the reinstallation cd.  Now this means that system restore will not configure to an earlier date.  The cd was eventuall successful in running but it hasn't MADE any difference.  Also I am unable to run the startup disk as it will just boot normally and no prompt screen comes up.  I have tried to create a new startup disk but it won't format or write new disks.

Basically I have no idea what caused the problem and as a result have no idea what to do now.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I realise that I haven't given much information to go on.
There tend to be a lot of Videos and and Music files that need Extra Codex , if it is a  matter of a lack of codex you can down load a free codex pack call Kazaa lite Mega codec pack , i use this and i have no problem playing almost any file

also some people recomend VLC , its a differnt media player that works Well, i like media player thopanboy, what in the world are you doing with your avatar?  You're taking a image that's actually 216,700 bytes and 664 x 1000 pixels and using it to display an avatar of 43 x 65 pixels.  And, BTW, just earlier today when I checked, you had it set at 65 x 98 pixels.  Are you changing the display dimensions, thinking that doing so will somehow make the underlying image file smaller?  It won't.  And, that IS exactly what you need to do.  Make the underlying image file smaller.

Here's an optmized version of your image, at 65 x 98 pixels, that's only 2,663 bytes, or about 1/100 the size of your file:

Please, please, please take it and use it.The codec isn't the problem.  It's more the fact my system has gone neanderthal since then.  It now has gone back to IE5.5 and won't work in anything else than the 16 colour setting.  Thanks Soybean, i figgured that the BOARD would scale the image , ill use the one you fixed cheers

Tell us what Version of Windows you Running , and make up a "hijack this" log and post it up here there are a few guys who know the inside and out of all that Giberish, and might be able to help you better if you post all the info you can Quote

Ya kinda lost me there.  Why do suggest I post a "hijack this" log.  I have absolutely no INDICATION that my system is INFESTED with anything. Quote

Rhiannon-

You need to do several things. First you need to download and install the proper driver for your video card. If you download and run Everest you can find out exactly what it is, and a lot more. It would help to have a lot of information about your system and components.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

You should download and install the latest Internet Explorer from the Microsoft site. Then download the latest Media Player for your operating system, at least version 9. You didn't post your operating system, so let us know that and make sure all of the Windows updates have been installed.

You should go ahead and run Hijack This and post the logfile as (sort of) stated in a previous post. It will take several posts to include it and the whole thing is needed.

Let's make sure it is clean before you put personal data or too much more work in there.

Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall if that is required?

Solve : Drive Capacity?

Answer»

I can't seem to find any answers for this one; I have just installed a 200GB drive and a fresh install of XP Pro but the drive is only recognized as 127GB. When I was using Maxtor's Maxblast to install the drive it said to install XP and then install Maxblast windows version and format the drive to it's full capacity. Well, after windows is installed Maxblast SAYS the drive is the windows drive and it cant be formatted to capacity  :-?

I installed XP Pro and SP2 but still can't recognize my 200GB drive.Probably a motherboard limitation.  Do you know for a fact that your motherboard supports >128GB hard drives?  Not sure about the Windows side of THINGS - is there a maximum partition size too?  You may need to partition it so that no single partition is larger than 128GB.

That's a good idea anyway - it's safer not to have all your files on one partition. The motherboard question is a good one...I think that board is about 5 years old. It's my kid's pc, which is pretty good for a kid. I've never used partitions so to be honest I'm not sure how to do that. I'm sure Maxblast can do that, but do I have to re-install windows? It is possible to shrink FAT-based partitions using FIPS (see the software FAQ - follow the LINK in my signature), provided you have defragged first.  For NTFS filesytems, you probably would need a commercial tool.

Partitioning on Windows systems is usually done via FDISK.  You might want to Google for a beginner's guide?

Re the possible motherboard limitation; there's a chance that the motherboard vendor has released a BIOS upgrade overcoming this limitation.  You'd need to check their website.Doh! I feel a bit sheepish...Maxblast has a "format unallocated diskspace" utility that did the job by creating a SECOND volume of 60-plus GB  Great!  And is that now showing up as an extra drive, in Windows Explorer?

Solve : Change Computer name.?

Answer»

After changing the owner name in user account some folders are still in an old name,  so how do you change the name? The name change does not chanfe the name in C:/docement and settings. Any ideas to do this. Regards
Windows XP operating SYSTEM  Im not sure what you are TRYING to do , but if you want to copy all a users files from one user to a NEW one , try the following

if your on XP
Right Click on "My computer" Click "Properties"
Go to the "Advanced" Tab
In the Second Box (In the MIDDLE)  "User Profiles" Click Settings Click on the user account you want to copy , then Click the Copy To Button and Browse to the folder for the New User , and click ok

Then it will copy the Files there

You can not be logged on as either user to do this

It is best if you loggon as An Administrator

I hope this helps answer your Question,
This will copy the folder Struture of a User Account VerbatiumIt's a bit of a tedious job, I'm afraid.  There may possibly be an easier way (if so, I hope someone will enlighten us), but this is what I would do; first, a disclaimer: Changing registry settings is dangerous.  Only proceed if you know what you are doing, and make a registry backup first.

Having renamed the user's account, log off and log on again as Administrator.  (In XP Home this requires you to start up in Safe Mode.)
Find the folders under C:\Documents and Settings, and rename them all.
Start-->Run-->regedit, to bring up the Registry Editor.
Search for every occurence of the old username, and change it to the new username.

You may then reboot.

This does not completely change the username, I'm afraid.  The underlying security information still KNOWS the original username, and you may see it in one or two purposes.  But for most purposes, you will find this to be satisfactory.

Solve : Renaming the folder list?

Answer»

Just wondering how I would do this.
I have the trial version of microsoft office 2003.
I have tried to change this but can't.

Any tips on how I could do so?What folder list? Try to be a little more specific on what you are trying to do and why.  I recently bought a copy of microsoft office overseas.  But it's in thai!   I uninstalled and found a trial of microsoft office 2003 and have downloaded that.  But when opening up the outlook for emails I have quite a few folders that are WRITTEN in thai that I would like to rename.
But everytime I go to do so it SAYS that I don't have permission to do so and that it's a special folder.
If I right click on the folder in the folder list and go to properties...the name of the folder is highlighted but I am unable to edit it.
If you need anymore INFO I am glad to give it.

KirstyOk i think those folders might Be Read only to you.

If you could change the Rights you could fix it , but im not sure how to do that in out look

I would Try to either Copy all the files form your old Thai folder into a new English folder
Or Export them all , and then Reimport them.

Which folders exactly are you trying to change?  Are you seeing them in Outlook or Windows Explorer?

You may be able to resolve this issue by finding your .pst file (probably under the hidden folder "Application Data" under your user profile) and deleting it.  Doing so would cause you to lose all saved EMAIL, CONTACTS, appointments, etc.  So you may wish to export those first.

Solve : Create new user in Windows xp causes reinstall?

Answer»

Hi,

After I create a new user account for Windows XP it reinstalls any programs I click on. Say I have photoshop CS and I log into the new user account, then click the shortcut for photoshop it reinstalls the program. I think it is reinstalling it or is it configuring it?

Thanks!
John

I FIND it difficult to believe that it would be reinstalling the programs for this REASON: there are unlikely to be any source files for an installation on your computer. Are the setup or msi files for every application on the hard drive? That would be the only way that they could be reinstalling. In other words: If you install CS, it takes the compressed files from the CD, uncompresses them, places them on your HD, and does some gratuitous registry twiddling. The CD is removed and the application cannot be "reinstalled" from those files on the hard drive regardless of if a new user is created and logged on. The original setup or MSI file from the CD must be used.

To my knowledge, an application cannot "reinstall" in another user's account from already installed files nor would it need to. Is this computer on a domain? The BEHAVIOR sounds similar to when an application is assigned to a user in an Active Directory environment, EXCEPT in that scenario I think the app is installed on log on, not when the app's icon is double clicked. I suppose the domain theory is unlikely in this situation... but I had to ask.

Does this behavior happen for *every* program you start in a new user account? Could you explain in more detail what you see when you start an application? Does it happen every time you open an application or only on the first try? Does any dialog box pop up and actually use the word "installing" or "reinstalling"? You might be right in your guess that the program is simply creating a seperate user profile for a new user.

Here's one thing to try: When you start an application, open task manager (CTRL-Shift-Escape), go to the processes tab, sort the processes by NAME (click on 'Image Name' above the leftmost column), and see if you can find a running process called "msiexec" or "setup.exe". If you do see either of those names, look over to the CPU column and see if they're taking any percentage of your CPU's time. Then sort processes by CPU usage (click the CPU title in the window) and see what is taking up your CPU's time. If it turns out to be something other than an msiexec or setup application, then we've narrowed the possibilities down.

Report back to us!

--Oober NooberSome Programs do need to Set up there own User Accounts , its usaly just Personil Preferances that change , most MS office programs do this witout telling you.

ive not used Photoshop CS on a multi User machine , but its proberly just setting up a personal Folder for Each account that use's it

If it not Trowing Any Errors i wouldent worry about it,
And if you inten to install programs for every one on the machince you will offten find a button for Only Me this user , or All Users on this machine. so just pic alll users , unless theres an Extra licene involved

Solve : Moving Data?

Answer»

Hey guys good morning or good afternoone I was wondering if someone could give me sum advice on how to move all my data off my old hard drive that has windows on it and move it into a NEW one.
Now I WOULD do it manually, but the problem is that the computer the hard drive goes with crashed it’s a old comp so I don’t rely mind for fixing it. I jest got me a new one from fry’s. The hard drive that I removed from my old computer was not old it’s a WD 80 gig, now I was thinking of using a live CD so I can recover my data off the hard drive when I install it on my new Comp, I don’t know if that would work if anyone has sum better advice I would greatly appreciate it.Can you not simply install it as a slave drive, when your new PC is up and RUNNING?ok so once i have XP installed on my new computer i should make my WD 80 GIG a slave and then boot into windows and would show up? would that work even TOUGH  the 80GIG has a OS on it wouldn’t it conflict with one and another? If you make sure that your old drive is set to slave , and your bios is set to boot off the primary drive you should have not problem.

And that is problerly what its set to by default , so dont worry to MUCH

Solve : setup not detecting drives :(?

Answer»

Hi Guys, I really hope someone can help cos Im tearing my hair out here! Sorry about the long post but it needs explaining.

Athlon 64 3200 Processor
2 x Seagate SATA Disc Drives
1GB Ram

My PC was getting sluggish so I decided to do a total reinstall. I admit I dont know really what I doing so I may be responsible for the problem I now have (lesson learned!) Here is the problem:

-After inserting the XP disc I opted for a clean install. It then did a few things and rebooted. But it now will not continue with the reinstall.

1.
If I boot up and dont press any key to boot from cd, I get 2 options. If I choose to continue setup, I get this message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll>
Please reinstall a copy of the above file"

If I choose to just start xp normally, I get this:

"Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as:
load needed DLLs for kernel"

2.
Or if I boot from XP cd and try to continue set up from the XP cd, no matter which options I choose I end up with a message saying that Set up cannot detect any hard disc drives on my system. It asks me to insert the manufacturers diskette, and when I do I get this error:

"file txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (512) at line 1742 in
d: \xpsp1\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c

press any key to continue"

Setup wont even let me go into the repair mode or anything because it cant detect any drives! So Im totally stuck basically. I have checked all the cables and connectors and everything is plugged in fine.

If you guys have an answer please explain it in simple terms like Im a 5 year old!
Thank youDo you have a SATA hard drive? What computer make/model and the hard drive make/model?

Is this a real Windows CD, or some sort of restore CD?

Do you see the hard drive correctly in the BIOS/setup? The key to get there should be displayed on the screen when the computer starts. Again, this depends on the manufacturer.

Hang on, we'll get you there.  Thanks for the quick REPLY

Yes, both drives are SATA drives. They are Seagate Barracuda. 1x80GB (Model:ST380013AS) and 1x120GB (Model: ST3120026AS). I have no idea what I doing when it comes to this kind of thing, especially SATA drives (I not even sure what SATA means!)

The motherboard is MSI K8T Neo (MS-6702 v1.X)

I had my PC made up by an independent computer shop 2 years ago (which is now nowhere near where I live!) so it isnt branded as such.

Yes the windows CD I have is the real, normal XP HOME disc.
Sorry but ALTHOUGH I know how to get into the BIOS, I will need you to tell me how to check the drives are correctly set up! What am I looking for and where in the BIOS?

Thanks so much for TRYING to help! You need to download the SATA drivers from the seagate site and put them on a floppy. Setup will ask for this, and insert it and press F6 (I think, but it will say). Without the SATA drivers, setup will not see the hard drive. Is that SP1 on the CD you have?

In any case, have a read here:

http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/sata_install_tshoot.htmlHmm
Well ive actually already tried that. I put the seagate Disc wizard onto a floppy and I get a similar error message! I tried it on 2 different floppies!

Any other ideas?SATA controller driver

Your Motherboard or SATA controller card requires a driver to work properly. If you did not get a Floppy Disk with the SATA driver included with your Motherboard you will have to make one. The SATA drivers can be located on the installation CD that came with your Motherboard or preferably, download the latest SATA controller drivers from the manufacturers site. Once you have located the drivers copy them to a formatted floppy disk. Make sure they are in the root directory i.e. not contained within any folders.

Did you download the correct file?hi, here is the update...

The floppy I was given which contains the drivers for the drives wont work (I get that error message).
I went to the seagate site and they said I dont need to install specific drivers, but they provide a disc wizard that you burn to cd and then boot up with to install your drives.

So the disc wizard detects my drives no problem and it allowed me to format my boot drive (at least it told me that was what it was doing anyway!). After formatting it tells me the drive is now ready to start my xp installation.

I then reboot and set up begins but always ends up with the same message about being unable to detect and hard drives! Arrrgh!

If I do not boot from cd and just see what happens, I get

"NTLDR is missing"

??

If I look in the boot order in BIOS it shows the drives that are connected, but if I look in the CMOS it says primary IDE master and slave are not installed. If I click on that it is set to autodetect.

I wouldnt mind paying for someone to come have a look but Im totally broke

Hope Im not giving you too much of a headache!

If it is a SATA drive, then you wouldn't expect the primary IDE to be there. WHat about if you turn it to OFF. Of course you will want to have the secondary ON so the optical drive(s) will work.

Were you messing inside the case before any of this, or in the BIOS? How many IDE channels doo you have? How many optical drives?

I never installed the drivers for the old mouse or anything cause when I hooked up the tower everything was recognized already so i diodn't see any need to install software for the mouse and monitor.I have already checked and it is set to select with 1 click and open with 2 and is set for right hand not left.Don't know what else to try.It is very irritating! Solve : Moving/Copying Outlook Mail Files?

Answer»

Hello All.  This is my first post here.  I'm glad to have found what looks like a fantastic forum.

As a non tech expert, I am gearing up to reinstall my XP Home Operating System on my Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop.  First time for such a scarey event.  (Any pointers?)
The hard drive is partitioned and as I understand it, my data files are on the D Drive and the program files are on the C Drive.  When reinstalling the OS onto the C Drive, it will WIPE clean everything on there while the D drive remains unharmed.

I have found from the "Data File Management" button, under the Outlook File Menu, that my email files are stored in the Application Data Folder on the C Drive.
How can I move/copy and somehow not lose my whole history of email during the reinstallation process.
How then, do I get the reinstalled Outlook program to find and recognize all the emails again?
It's a bit strange.   Am I write in the impression that all of my emails, thousands, are contained in one file?

Thank you so much for taking the time to READ and hopefully help me with my situation.

Best,

Matthew

Matthew ,  You should find all your Email stored here .

The default location where Outlook 2003 stores your data is in Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

To double CHECK where Outlook is saving data, go to Tools > Options… > Mail Setup > Data Files… and you will see a listing of all of your data files (along with an interface for managing them).

Hope this helps you

dl65  Have a read here:

You are talking Outlook and not Outlook Express?

Express info here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670Hey thanks so much.  That link looks like just the guide I've been looking for.
A follow up question:
Since my computer is partitioined with programs on the C drive and Data on the D Drive, is there any reason I should NOT organize things after the OS reinstall so that the mail files are on the D drive?  Would they need to be in a particular folder?

I'm considering switchinig to Mozilla's Thunderbird.  Am I right in thinking that I can import the mail files to Thunderbird just like I would with Outlook?  It serves essentially the same functions, no?

Many thanks.

MatthewThunderbird is a good choice, particularly if you're handling multiple email accounts (something Outlook has been a little awkard about, historically).  Thunderbird will not be able to connect to an Exchange server, so could be less useful in a corporate context.

Re Outlook's data files, you might find >this discussion< of interest.  Thuderbird can import some, but not all of Outlook's data.  It can import contact information, but does not have all the same fields as Outlook, so there is a possibility of some data loss on the way (e.g. multiple phone numbers/email accounts for one contact).

For transferring over email, including sent folders, etc., I strongly recommend switching to an IMAP email account with your ISP, if possible.  (That facility may already be there, you just don't know about it.)  IMAP is an advanced email system that is good if you plan to access your email from multiple locations/computers.  Basically the email is kept on the server; you just download copies.  IMAP tracks which messages have been seen, deleted, etc.

The advantage for you is that using the old Outlook, you could copy all of your email into the IMAP account (drag and drop; nested folders are possible with IMAP), then it will all be there when you come to connect with your new setup. And this is a great FREE utility for backing up and restoring all aspects of Thunderbird AND Firefox:

http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

A pretty slick little program, I think.  AWESOME tips guys.  Thanks.
Rob, my att account his spam ridden and a mess.  I'm thinking of focusing things on the GMAIL.  Can't find any IMAP setting, though.

The Biggger question though:  Before I reinstall my OS, is there something I should be thinking about saving on my C Drive?  I've got my My Documents and all Data on the D Drive.  I exported copies of my Perosnal and ARchive Outlook folders to the D Drive.
Is there some other information I should be concerned about losing before wiping out everything on the C drive with the reinstall?  I know I'll have to also reinstall all programs.
I've also exported the favorites and bookmarks from IE and Firefox.
Any last minutes words of wisdom?

Thanks so much.Gmail has been promising IMAP support for some time now, but as FAR as I know it is not yet implemented.  A pity really.

I recommend backnig up the Application Data folder in its entirety - that will not do any harm.  In fact, just copy your whole profile.  That should mop up everything you need.  MS finally got it right with XP, and stored (almost) all user data in one subtree.

They finally took the hint from Unix...

Do you have any Office templates?  They may be stored under the Office installation folder.  Check there.

Other than that, you might want to do a search of the hard drive for particular types of file: *.doc, *.pub, *.mp3, etc.

Solve : Can't access files -filenames, but no file content?

Answer»

I have an E-Machine, 2.6 Ghz, 80 GB hard drive, 512k Ram, 56k modem, Windows XP, Home Edition, Service Pack 2, bought in Nov 2003.

My problem began when I deleted a Linux partition from my hard disk using the Windows XP Computer Management utility.  It not only deleted the Linux partition, but every partition after that as well, including my g: partition.  After many weeks of searching for free software to get the partition back, I finally succeeded.  However, ALTHOUGH I was able to access two of the three main directories I had on g:, it would not allow me to access the third directory.  I could cd into it, but when I did a "dir", nothing came back, not even the information that their was a directory there.  I also downloaded many, many free file restore utilties, but none of them worked very well.  When I logged in, the system ran CHKDSK and gave zillions of error messages saying "bad sector found, deleting sector", so I was afraid to let it continue.  Hesitantly, eventually I let it run, and all my files were finally restored.  It was a miracle.  These files are very large, and yesterday, after spending SIX hours organizing and sizing them in order to backup onto 12 cd's, after creating super directories and moving the other directories into them, suddenly I could not longer access them!  It said, "Access denied".  I tried "attrib" and nothing.  I cd's into the subdirectories, but when I tried to "dir" their subdirectories, it said "No file(s) found."  I logged in as Administrator and ran CHKDSK, but it fixed nothing.  I downloaded FixMbr, but I am afraid to run it, because it might just drop anything that doesn't LOOK kosher and the files will be lost forever.  Any suggestions?  Help!!  Does anybody have a clue as to what is GOING on?  If I even KNEW that, it would help.
Does this help?

I am not really "WORRIED" about personal security, concerned might be a better description.  I believe that the more information we give the hackers and writers of malware, especially on an OPEN forum or chatroom, the easier their chosen task becomes.  IMHO displaying IP info on the chatroom is totally unnecessary and adds nothing to the quantity or quality of the chatroom posts.

Solve : Notification icons "past items"?

Answer»

I've noticed that the list of past items in the Customize Notifications window has become a "mile" long from PROGRAMS that I've tried and then DELETED over time.  Does anyone know if there is a way to delete some of these from the list?  I use Windows XP with Service PACK 2.  Thank You!ccleaner removes a  lot  of stuff. www.ccleaner.com

I don't know what "customize notification window" is. Where is that located?Maybe it's not a "window".  I'm unsure of the technical term. It's the box that pops up when you right-click the Start button and choose Properties. It's the "window" that lets you choose to "always show; always hide" etc. the individual notification icons.   P.S.:  Thank you for the tip; I've been using ccleaner for quite some time now.Strart, Settings, Taskbar & Start Menu , Start Menu Programs and press Clear. Does that fix what you are referring to?No.  I'm not referring to the shortcuts on the start menu.  It's not that big of a deal.  Thank you for sharing some of your time for me.RLP:

Windows XP will show every program that has ever had an icon show up in the Notification Area where the clock is located.  You really don't have to delete them, as they are grouped as Recent and Past items.  The Recent items is the only group to which you really need to pay attention.

If you want to try to edit the Windows registry to remove these, let me know, but i would not recommend doing so unless you know what you are doing.

Best regards,

then reboot you pcYes, the Repair Tool Plus cleared the list.  Unfortunately, it cleared a couple of active icons, and I had to spend just a little time remembering where these functions were accessed from in order to get the icons back.  Thank you to EVERYONE who took the time to reply to my question!

Solve : Desktop Icon Text?

Answer»

My computer's desktop icon text use to look like this

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/9484/desktop7fu.jpg

[just text on its own with shaddows so it STANDS out on the desktop background picture with no backgrounds]

but then my computer broke and someone took it away and fixed it but when it came back they looked like this

http://img166.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled22cv.jpg

[the text with little coloured backgrounds behind them like u use to get on the older versions of windows]

How do i change them back to normal so there's no backgrounds, just smooth over the desktop background.

HOPE you understand what i mean. please help if you can, it's really annoying. thanksOpen Control Panel > System Properties > Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn OFF the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok.
If the setting is already OFF, toggle Use drop shadows setting.I TRIED this with the box ticked and unticked but they are still there. Any Suggestions?Right click on your desktop, click on "Arrange Icons By" and make sure "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is disabled.

Caution, no matter how tempting DO NOT try to fix this with TweakUI.Tried it, still there. Any others?Sadly I don't have an XP machine here to try things but all the Googling points to the same answers.
Google for "TRANSPARENT desktop icons".
In addition to me tweakui comment above I suggest you also steer clear of any other 'programs' that offer to fix this for you.
Have you tried refreshing the screen after making changes?I am having this same problem thanks GXMAN for reffering me to this thread.  I tried these resolutions but they remain shaded on my screen as well.

Fed...what do you mean by "refreshing" the screen?Right click on your desktop & select refresh. This could possibly be a problem with the background color, since it will SHOW through the wallpaper. The icon text will appear against the background color.

Solve : Reformatting hard drive?

Answer»

I've finally gotten pretty much everything I WANTED off of the old computer I was talking about in my other topic (using a Slax Linux CD and a pendrive), and now I'd like to reformat the hard drive (and possibly partition it so I can run Windows and some version of Linux), install Windows 98 SE on the computer (I already have the install CD for it), and install an extra hard drive that I've had for a while.  I know that's probably pretty complicated, and I couldn't find a whole lot about how to do it on the Microsoft support website (not surprisingly). The only thing I'm worried about is whether or not things like my mouse, keyboard, and modem will still work whenever I reformat the hard drive and install 98SE, because I don't know if they'll have the drivers they need or not.

So, what I'd like to know is:

 • How do I reformat a hard drive?
 • How much harder would it be to partition the hard drive and install two systems on it, as opposed to not partitioning it and installing one? And if I did partition the hard drive, how would I install the different systems, and how would I choose which one to boot with at startup?
 • Will my mouse, keyboard, motem, etc. still work after the hard drive is reformatted and a new system is installed?

If you know of websites that explain these things, that would work too.1. -insert windows cd into cd drive.
-enter bios by hitting button as seen on monitor during power up (should say "hit __ to enter setup")
    - select "boot priority" or "boot sequence"
-make the cd drive that u have ur windows cd in boot first
    -reboot
-ur comp will now boot off the windows cd from there u can setup a partition, reformat, and reinstall windows)

2. sorry i have no idea...

3. depends whether its a USB or PS2 keyboard/mouse. if they are PS2, u dont need to worry about anything. if thier USB, no they will not work. ur keyboard and mouse, if USB, should have come with USB to PS2 adapters. u need to use the adapters first, install the drivers for them, and then u can use them in the USB slots. The computer currently has Windows 98 on it, but I don't have the CD for that. I do have a Windows 98SE CD.  And it's not just the mouse I'm worried about, it's pretty much everything (mouse, keyboard, modem, graphics card, sound card, and other things that PLUG into the computer or are inside of it).  I also need to know about partitioning the hard drive before I do anything so I can figure out whether I want to or not. Slightly clearer instructions on how to reformat the hard drive would be nice too, because I'm pretty new at this.yes u will need to reinstall all the drivers for all ur cards for MAXIMUM performance. u can either download them and put them on a disk before reformatting (and install them off the disk after the format), or download and install them after formatting. or if u still have the original disks that came with the cards, u can install the drivers for them off of the disks after the format.

does ur keyboard/mouse use a USB (square) or PS2 (round) connector? THIS PARTS IMPORTANT!!!

when u boot off the windows cd, it will ask u if u would like to partition the hd. however i do not see the piont of this because the maximum sized hd that win98 can handle is 32gb. the partitions are not giong to be very big.

Ill re-explain how to format the hd as clear as i can...

1. turn ur comp on.
2. the first thing u see is the BIOS starting screen
3. u will see something along the lines of "press __ to enter setup" or "hit __ to enter BIOS" push that key.
3a. i cant say what the key is going to be exactly because there is a variety, for some its F1, for others its DEL or F8
4. if u already started to load windows, u went too far. the BIOS starting screen stays up for only about 10 seconds.
5. u should be in the BIOS setup if u u hit the correct key within that 10 seconds or so. (ithe BIOS setup screen normally has a blue background and is really ugly looking)
6. u have to use ur keyboard to navigate within the BIOS setup.
7. navigate to something along the lines of "boot priority" or "boot sequence"
8. u should see a list something like this...ill use mine as an example.
     1. MAXTOR 6V300FO (my hardrive)
     2. BENQ DVD DD DW1650 (my DVD drive)
     3. HL-DT-SL-CD RW GCE-8527B (my cd drive)
     4. SONY 3.5" FLOPPY (my floppy drive)

the numbers to the left indicate the boot sequence. 1 being the first to boot, and 4 being the last to boot. u may have more than 4 or u may have less, that doesnt matter. u want ur cd drive to boot first.    select the "1." slot and select ur cd drive.
9. save changes and exit. ur comp will now boot ur cd drive first.
10. insert windows cd into the cd drive
11. ur comp will now boot off the cd.
12. the cd will ask u if u would like to partition the hd.
13. the cd will also ask if u would like to format the hd.

if this is confusing, please TELL me where i lost u in these steps and i will be more specific.  im very tired right now and i might have made a few grammatical errors.
The WIndows 98 CD may or may not be bootable. If not, you can get a free bootdisk at www.bootdisk.com

All drives have partitions. WHether you want one for just Windows, or leaving some free space at the end to load Linux later should be decided before you start.

Once WIndows is installed you can install and run Everest Home to identify the components that need drivers and go locate and install them. That's not too tough. If the machine is still running, you could check in Device MANAGER and see exactly what components are there.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

If you plan carefully BEFORE you start you will be a lot happier with the results. How about posting the specifics on the computer as best you can - make/model, CPU, RAM, hard drive size(s), etc.

Solve : Exe files in System32?

Answer»

XP Home.

Is there anywhere a list of the purpose of default .exe files in System 32 :-?Sounds suspiciously like a homework question? Why do you want to know? Have you used your google button or researched this online? Have you checked at the Microsoft site? Thanks for your response.  Definitely not homework.

There are 318 .exe files in my system32 folder, some of which are recognisable such as CMD and APPEND and am trying to COME to grips with what else could be used.  For example WRITE.EXE opens Wordpad from the Command Prompt but the Target in the Shortcut is C:\PROGRAM Files\Windows NT\Accessories\Wordpad.exe.

So what do other do - such as Autochk Blastcln and which program uses them if they're not "stand-alone":-?

Yes, have tried Google and spent a lot of time in the MS-KB but have been unable to tie-down a full list of .exe's in the System32 folder.

Can you offer any HELP/guidance :-?Are you having problems, or running extremely low on disk space? Do you fear they are malware, or what? Just curious. Thanks again...

I have absolutely no problems to report and have many-multi-gigabytes of spare diskspace and all my scans show no malware of any kind.  My backup, including registry backup, is up-to-date as is my FIREWALL, anti-virus  and Windows updates.

I just want to know what the purpose of each .exe file is.  There may be some real gems among them.

or type the name of the exe into google and see if there is any results Quote

Thank you - very close to what I am looking for though I think some are internal rather than external commands.  Great help.  I will print off the list and go from there.

Already tried the Google step without much success..

Thanks again..

Solve : Changing domain names on workstations via script.?

Answer»

Kudos to y'all out there!!! I just wanted to know if there is any script that would change the domain name of a workstation and of course join it afterwards. We don't WANT to go to each and every workstation and do the following:

Right click on My Computer->Properties->Network Identification tab->Properties->Change domain name->enter admin username and password->reboot

That's why I'm wondering if there's a script that would do this for us. I hope someone could help.Is this a homework question? Is this your network? More details please.Try using the the netdom utiltity. For Win2000 and XP you'll find it AMONG the tools in the support\tools folder on your install CD.

Is this a homework question? Is this your network? More details please.

This is not a homework question. We're to do it here in our network. We bought a new server and would like to set it up from scratch. We'll make this new server a new PDC and of course a new domain here in our organization. Now all workstations are currently part of a domain. If this new server is all set-up, the task of going to each and every machine and right clicking on My Computer and changing the domain name from the current one to the new one we'd set-up and supplying the admin username and password to rebooting is gonna be an ardous job. So I hope that there is s script that would do all of this. Please help...Did you try what Sidewinder suggested?Kudos to y'all! Solve : Can not format!!!Please help otherwise i pay 1300$?

Answer»

Well my prtoblem is this i helped a friend of a friend to format a laptop pc> No problem with that after 2 weeks the problems start after a defragment everything crashed!!!!Until then i was really coll i thought another format and everything is ok.But it was not everything ok!!!!!In the beggining i could not boot the ntldr file missing and i could not load windows. Another guy tried to fix it it BECAME worse the problem. I tried to format but it takes 2hours to reach 6%!!!!Should i left it for days until it format?I am in distress because the guy says it is my fault and i should pay and i definetely cabn not afford it!!!The pc is hp laptop intel celeron 512 ram.I can nto quick format it and furthermore i tried repair from bios and stilll nothing!!!!Thanx in advance the only hope is you !!!!If you want to format a hard drive COMPLETELY i recommend KillDisk. and umm, if they agreed to you formating the computer its their fault too for putting their laptop in the hands of someone that could possibly damage their hardware. oh and did you try reinstalling windows?Look i am not a computer expert the only thing i did was formatting it and everything was ok.Then after 2 weeks the problem started and i suspect that it was DUE to the fact that they were connected to internet for the first time!!!!Is it my fault that they entered no safe sites? It does not matter whose fault it is the problem is i do not know the solution so any suggestions are welcome!!!!
firstly its there fault, u cant take the blame cause you not certified , second 1300 is a silly number,  new HDD is 100 third if its just a bad partition , get partition magic, and u can fix it

look in the boot disks section of the faq for a GOOD boot disktry this boot disk

http://www.bootitng.com/downloads/bootitng.zip

it hadels partitions with ease

its definatley not ur fault. it sounds like his hard drive is fried. i would simply tell him to buy a new hd. the reason i say its the hd is because i bought a new comp not too LONG ago, and everything started to go reeeeeeeaally slow. i did scans and found nothing. i reformatted, tried to start a program, and it still took 10min. to load. i got a new hd and the problem was solved. What was wrong that a format was in order?  Did you use a real copy of Windows or an HP recoverey CD? THe post is a little vague, so please clarify the details for more relevant help.

Solve : ADP port sending out rapid Who Has , Tell ?

Answer»

Ok. So let's say you are in a computer lab and it's all on one big network with one priter. When someone goes to print something, their computers askes everything on the network "Who has this ip?" (the printer IP) Everyone elses computer ignores this except for the printer who says "I have that ip". then the computer asks "do you have this MAC address?" and when the printer responds with "yes", the print begins. Now for SOME reason my computer is just rapidly sending out WHO HAS , TELL and I don't know why...

That little example above is I think what I read off of a website or somthing about ADP ports and how they work. Anyway, my ADP port keeps sending out these requests very rapidly, which is killing my bandwidth and is setting off some "safety" thing or something with my cable modem, causing it to reset itself. When I look on my firewall, it's usually Svchost that's at 80-100% of traffic, so I'm assuming that's the case.

Internet:Comcast High Speed
Cable Modem: RCA
IP: Dynamic

Picture of my ethereal log (for those who don't have it):http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/2060/ethereallog3yy.png
Attached: A small ethereal log that shows the problem. Believe me, my computer sends out MANY more than that.

PS. The source IP when those requests are being sent out is my...default gateway...what the *censored*?I believe this to be an ARP (address resolution protocol) spam attack from outside your network; does your router have a built in firewall?  (If not, why not?)I don't use a router, but I do use this Nyko wireless thing here, because my computer is in a room far away from the modem. Since this isn't real "wireless", I don't think there is any way for someone to do anything with it. Also, I'm the only one USING my internet, so there's no one else on the network. I have a firewall, and I'm using it to block a few IPs already, but it's not doing much good... Quote

I'm the only one using my internet, so there's no one else on the network.
Ah, now that's where you'd be wrong.  If you are connected to the internet, you're on the same network as millions of other people.  The attack is coming from the internet side of your modem.  The modem (since it doesn't know any better) is broadcasting the attack to your LAN.

So LETS get this right: you have a PC to which you have attached a modem and the wireless extender?  If so, that's the PC that needs to have some decent firewall software running, which MUST be configured properly.  Software firewalls aren't great as a first line of defence, but if that's all you've got, you could do with locking it down tightly. Quote
Quote

Ah, now that's where you'd be wrong.  If you are connected to the internet, you're on the same network as millions of other people.

Ok, you got me on a technicality. =/ But what I was saying is that I'm the only one in my house that USES the internet at one time. Anyway, I use Comodo Personal Firewall. Any help on setting that up correctly? I used to have it set up to block a few IPs, but I'm not SURE if I got it all covered..
Firewall security needs to be looked at the other way around.  Rather than blocking known nasties, you start by blocking everything.  Then you unblock things you know you need.  I can't specifically help you with that firewall product, since I don't know it, but most of these personal firewalls have a "learning mode", whereby they'll lock everything down, and then check with you each time something requires access that isn't currently permitted.

In your case, it might be best to start from scratch, by removing Comodo and installing (e.g.) ZoneAlarm.

Oh - the reason I made the point about networks is that this is easy to overlook.  The internet is just one network.  As soon as you plug in by dial up, ADSL or whatever, you are part of that network.  At worst, every single node (computer) on that network can communicate with/attack every other node.  This is what makes firewalls so crucial.I'm keeping Comodo, personally because I like it, and second because it has a learning mode. Actually, it had a few of them. Plus, I don't really like zone ALARM that much..Fine.  Make sure you set it up right.

Solve : File missing error when?

Answer»

Hi,

I usually run reports using a software application for work. When running a specfic report on that application I am getting an error that one of the files I need is missing.

This software is running on the network and no other user EXCEPT me gets this error and the error is computer specific. I don’t get this error when running that report from DIFFERENT PC under my login.

A friend of mine told me that it COULD be a "rights" issue on the computer I use and I should check 3 types of rights.

I don’t know what they are and how I could check them.

Can someone please help.
Are you the administrator of the network? If not, he/she could easily fix this. Here's some reading, but if not an administrator you cannot change rights WITHIN the domain:

It makes reference to the registery, but I have run a reg cleaner but that doesnt help.Any idea how to get rid of these windows popping during startup?  :-?You're on the RIGHT track by looking for the registry entry.
There are many programs that show what's starting from the registry.
Try 'Autoruns' from http://www.sysinternals.com or you could even try running HIJACKTHIS and see if it shows in there.Thank you so much for pointing me to that Autoruns program Fed, that program was able to lead me right to the problem, fixed it, and I will know what to do in the future, that site looks great for stuff as well....
The other problem I was going to mention as I said in my first post is similar to the one I just fixed, when starting up Windows I get a far more annoying window that comes up, this one is a Windows Installer window, and it wants to install a program that is already on the hard drive, I have a hard time canceling it, I have to hit ctrl/alt/delete just to get it to stop, and this window pops up when I click on other program icons as well, I looked for this in Autorun but didnt find anything, doesnt sound to me like a registry problem, any suggestions? What is the program that's trying to install?
I suppose you could let it complete the installation or alternatively you could uninstall the program & start from scratch with it.

Edit: Autoruns is much easier to use if you set the OPTIONS to 'Hide Signed Microsoft Entries' then refresh the screen. Its called Scrapbook Factory Deluxe, as I mentioned its already installed, it even comes up checking e-mail, ect, its my wife's key program on the computer and she doesnt want me to uninstall it, she is about the same level of computer knowledge as myself and she is convinced the problem has something to do with a component of Windows being erased at some point causing this to happen, I dont think thats it myself, any idea?Email the Manufacturer

Thanx Fed, I will do that, so I guess your saying your pretty sure its the program and not a windows problem? I just need a view from someone who knows what they are talking about that I can pass on to my wife, LOL....
Thanx for all the help, great site you have here, will be sure to mention it to my friends....I'm sure it is a program problem, it may even be some sort of automatic update.
Let us know what they say. Before I call them, I am trying to uninstall the program first, and the *censored* thing wont uninstall, I just  get the window below over and over, anyone know of a good uninstall program? I would rather do it that way then MANUALLY remove the program bit by bit....I have tried 3 different programs to uninstall this beast and none of them work, I'm not sure if I should just try to manually do it....What are you using for malware protection?Ewido, along with the usual, Spybot, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster and AntiVir PE Classic....How about running Hijack This and posting a log file for analysis by one of our experts. Either zip the file or use several posts to get it all.

Solve : Sometimes OS will not load?

Answer»

Hello,

I hope I can find some help with this problem.  About a week ago at times XP Home would not load.  The screen would stay gray and I would reboot and it would come up fine.  I had a dual boot setup with W2000 and XP.  Well, I got rid of the dual boot setup as I didn't need it any longer and did a fresh install of XP on newly formatted partition and it still has the same problem.  At times the OS simply won't load and the screen stays gray.  I reboot and it might do that again or the OS will load.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Beth Nagle nagle.....  When this occurs, does Xp start to load ...or just nothing ? When this happens ,is the light on the monitor green or amber ?

dl65  Thanks for your reply.  When I turn on the computer XP doesn't even start to load. It all stops within moments of pushing the power button.  As for the monitor, the light is green when the computer stops short of loading the OS and remains green while the screen is blank.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
NagleWhat about some details about the system, how long this has been going on, what happened prior to this, etc.My apologies for not giving more details.

AMD Athlon 2200+
1.8ghz
1G Ram
Radeon 9200
dual monitor setup
160G Seagate Hard Drive
XP home

Is that all you need?

I can't think of anything happening prior to this or having done anything differently that caused this.  I thought formatting and reinstalling XP would cure this but it didn't.  However, I did not format the entire disk as one partition had my Data (misc. files I keep on its own partition).  This started happening about 1.5 to 2 weeks ago and I just did the reinstall day before yesterday.

I did scan the partition the OS is on and it did not find any errors.  ?

Thanks,
Beth NagleWas the computer moved, monitor reattached, any activity inside the case, etc.?No, the computer hasn't been moved.

Interestingly, yesterday I was tweaking a game because it was running slowly and at some point while tweaking the graphics my LCD monitor went gray though my CRT monitor didn't. I have a dual monitor setup that has been working fine.  I note that I COULD not move the cursor anywhere so the keyboard was out.  The whole computer became inoperative and I had to reboot.  I am going to check all my connections and clean my computer and I am also going to put in my previous graphics card to see if this problem occurs.  This is my mode of troubleshooting right now.    Any thoughts?

That sounds like a reasonable starting plan. I would certainly keep it as simple as possible until resolved, manipulating only one variable at a TIME. You will find your culprit!  Yes, one thing at a time.  Here is what I have done so far:

I swapped the graphics card.  Did not help.
I tried different monitors.  Did not help.
I have tested both memory sticks and ran both individually in different slots and problem continues. So I don't think it is a memory issue.
Next, I am going to swap a different drive.  I don't WANT to redo my setup unless I have to!

Interestingly, if the computer has been on awhile, the problem doesn't seem as acute but always, so far upon a cold boot, the problem ARISES and after two to three reboots it finally loads the OS.  Fun eh?

Any thoughts?  Any areas I am overlooking to test?

Thanks,
BethWhen it fails does it show a POST screen?I will have to test that...I am not sure. It seems I remember seeing it but I will have to test it again.  I thought I remember seeing  I  Bios splash screen.  I will have to get into cold boot mode and be sure I record exactly what I see.   It would help to know exactly whn it stops.
You may have a failing PSU.Ok, I finally got a good cold boot and it stops immediately after accessing the floppy drive.  There is no Bios splash screen and not POST screen.  Your mentioning the PSU got me thinking in another vein. I caused me to remember that I plugged this computer into a different OUTLET before all this started.  I will plug it into the previous outlet and see what happens.

Any thoughts on this new information?  Of course it's possible to be an elecricty supply (outlet) problem but highly unlikely.
It does cast some serious doubt on your PSU though.I see.  Well, I don't know if I let it sit long enough as it booted up but it hung on the Welcome screen longer than usual.  It has been doing that periodically.

I will read up on PSU's and such.  I am also going to try a different HD as that certainly won't hurt.

Thanks.

Solve : Hard Drive running fast?

Answer»

I have a hp PAVILLION a750w and it SEEMS on some web PAGES I browse on it revs up for a minute or two then

goes back to normal. What CAUSES this?  Any help would be appreciated. Is it the hard drive or a fan? Open the case and ISOLATE the sound origin. The hard drive is most likely not making the sound.

What kinds of pages do this? Does the computer work normally otherwise?

Solve : Cannot boot up or reinstall...Help please!?

Answer»

Hi guys. Im a noob so please be gentle . My knowledge is very limited

After having various probs with my pc crashing and being sluggish, I decided to do a reinstall of XP.

- I inserted the disc and selected a complete reinstall. After a minute or two of copying files and stuff, the system began to reboot.
- Then for some reason it gave me this message saying that "hal.dll" is missing or corrupt. So I could not continue

- To cut a long story short, if I now restart, (with the disc in the drive, it will not give me the chance to get into the recovery console) I get to the screen where it asks if I WANT to continue XP setup, or just boot my existing XP.
If I select continue xp setup, I get this:

"load needed DLLS for kernel"

and if I opt for booting my existing XP I get the message about hal.dll again!

- Theres more... Sometimes, but not every time, it gives me the chance to boot from the XP cd when I start up. I press any key and a blue screen comes up and it starts doing all SORTS of normal installation stuff. Then it says it is going to start windows, but then another blue screen comes up and says it cannot detect any hard disk drives and cannot continue!

Basically, I cant get ANYWHERE near the normal XP window screen or make any progress at all with the reinstall. I have tried getting into windows with safe mode as well and that does nothing.

Please help guys...I need my PC working! Some of my work depends on it. LUCKILY I did backup important files on my 2nd drive which does not have XP installed.

If you can help please keep it VERY simple language and if you tell me to do something please try to explain it step by step. Sorry but I really am way out of my depth here!

Much appreciated. What would we do without forums like this? goatboy....... Do you have an original MS Win XP cd or is it a install /restore cd set that came with the machine ?
If its an original xp cd ....does it include SP1 and or SP2 ?
Is the original cd clean and in good condition ?
If the answer to the above is yes to all .........
Go into the bios and change the boot sequence to cd-rom 1st boot ...... then remember to save the change and exit............. Now put the original XP cd in the cd-rom and reboot ........ follow the instructions on the screen ........ Dont forget to remove any partitions that may have been created . DON'T use the repair console ..........   You want a complete new install.

Solve : windows genuine advantage notification?

Answer»

Can anyone please help a complete amateur? I cannot use Windows update anymore, because they say my copy of Windows xp could be a copy. I think this is so unfair, as the Windows xp was already installed when I bought my pc.
I have managed to get rid of the pop icon on the toollbar, but I can no longer get any more updates. Is there a way (in simple TERMS please),to enable winows to update.I cannot uninstall the windows genuine advantage notification.

Many thanks.
AlanWas the seller an individual or retailer?  If FEASIBLE, contact the seller about this.  Since you apparently do not have a legitimate copy of Windows, and if you can not resolve this isse with the seller, you'll need to get a valid license to resolve this problem of not being able to get updates, EITHER by purchasing Windows from a legitimate seller, or by dealing directly with Microsoft.   Here's a Microsoft FAQ on validation.im not 100% sure on this, but i think the automatic updates still work even when genuine advantage is installed.A quote from the link in my PREVIOUS post:
"Customers found to be using non-genuine versions of Windows will receive a message during logon that their copy of Windows appears to be non-genuine and will be directed to the WGA Web site to learn more. Users who choose not to obtain a copy of genuine Windows will receive periodic reminders. Regardless of genuine status, users will not be denied access to critical security updates. Users who have not validated their COMPUTERS as genuine, however, will not be able to install many updates, including Internet Explorer 7.0 and Windows Defender."For a lot of reasons it would be better to be legal if you are using XP or better. MS will continue to throw "gotchas" at you until you comply to their wishes.

It may be unfair, but it sounds like your copy is, indeed, illegal. Sorry.

Solve : Windows Movie Maker 2.1 won't save or burn!?

Answer»

Having PROBLEMS with MM 2.1 that I never have had before

When I try to burn to a DVD "Movie Maker cannot create the DVD because an error occurred" I have a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer

Now I tried to troubleshoot on Microsofts pages and found this:

"This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
• You use Fast User Switching to change user accounts before you try to burn the DVD.
• The account that you switched to does not have sufficient permissions to use the DVD burn engine that is USED by Windows Movie Maker. To burn a DVD, the user account must have administrator permissions.

To work around this problem, log on to an account that has administrator permissions before you try to burn a DVD"

Well I am the administrator of the computer, AND it also gives me this message when I try and save to some other format

"Microsoft Visual C++

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an UNUSUAL way.
Please contact the application's SUPPORT team for more information."

Not only that, but when I save it to my computer (that's the only option that will go through) it will get stuck on a picture and continue to play music, but the rest of the movie was never saved.
