Solve : windows me taskbar?

Answer»

I hope I have an easy ONE for you. I just reformatted and have everything up and running but the only open programs that show on my taskbar are webpages. The taskbar used to show everything I had open whether it was documents or games, now it is only when I go into internet explorer. I figured it was an easy fix by going into Folder Options but I can't find where to CHANGE the setting. When I minimize the program DISAPPEARS, I don't know if it is running in the background or closing out, I have to open the program again to get it back.  :-? :-? :-?

Thanks Travisthe programs that dissapear are probably still running. to CHECK, simply ctrl+alt+del and look to SEE if the processess are running.

Solve : transferrin files?

Answer»

hello i need to transfer these driver FILES to my other computer but the problem is i cant. ive tried to burn it on a cd but my cd burner is messed up. i dont have no floppy drives. i dont have internet on the other computer cuz the ethernet doesnt have the software installed. is there any other way i can transferr the files. there urgent and i need to install them in ORDER for my computer to run correctlytake out ur hd from the old computer and set it as the master in ur new one. then simply click on my computer (u should see ur new hd there) and drag and drop the files u need.thanx for the answer but i cannot do it that way, if i open anyone of my computers it wouldnt be COVERED by the warranty ever again. and i already payed for the warrantyFind a friend who has an internet connection and a CDRW drive.  yeah LOL, but i need this software installed asap. grrwell ur only options are...

1. finding somebody that has internet and a cd burner
2. opening ur comp (which u already declined)
3. going to a comp. store and asking nicely if they have the drivers u need on a cd.

P.S. most drivers are small enough to fit on a floppy, so if u can find somebody with internet and a floppy drive, u might just be lucky enough for ur driver to fit on a floppy.

Solve : Win XP password?

Answer»

Hi everyone! I got a laptop from someone off freecycle for my 2 YEAR old just to play games on. It's got Windows XP but the person I got it from must've put on a password to log on to Windows. I can't reach her...phone or email. Is there anyway for me to wipe it out or something? I can't get into it otherwise. Thanks! The password is to PREVENT access from anyone else. That is what it is supposed to do and it looks like it is working.

Is this a BIOS password or a Windows password? Do you see the Windows logo? Did you get a Windows CD with that to reinstall if necessary? The Win xp logo is on it so I'm assuming it's a windows password. No she didn't give me anything but the laptop. Actually I had to go out and buy a plug....she seemed a bit...scatterbrained. Anyway. I have something from my computer which is an HP....does it matter if the other machine is a Toshiba? If it is a restore CD it will do you no good. If it is a real Windows CD you may be able to use it IF that copy is not installed and running on another machine. Unforttunately it ssounds like tthat registration number is in use. Bill Gates wants you to pay for one copy of Windows for every machine, and the acttivation scheme in place to get it to RUN after 30 days ENFORCES that.  It gets worse than that, though. If you go to the store you cannot use the lower priced Windows XP upgrade CD unless you have a CD from a previous, qualifying version of Windows. Do you have one of those? If not, then you get to buy the full product (about $100 more) or an OEM copy.  Well that stinks! I don't have that so I guess I better wait and see if this girl will get back to me. Geez...all I wanted was a computer for my SON to play games on. LOL. Who knew!  Thanks for your help anyway.Maybe she will be able to help. Let us know.  Thanks for your attempts to help me. LOL. I'll let you know if she gives me the password or not. It's easy enough to change once I'm in there so....hopefully.  A clean install is the best way to go, perhaps W2K would suit your price range?
You can reset the xp password but it's expensive.
http://www.lostpassword.com/asterisk.htmYAY! She got back to me with the password! Thanks alot for your help! She didn't happen to come throgh with a Windows CD did she?Well no but that's ok. LOL

Solve : Data Recovery Software?

Answer»

Can anyone suggest a good recovery SOFTWARE, one that you can understand and know how to recovery certain files and folders.
I have tried two but almost impossible to know how to find the files you want to recover.I give up. What have you tried and what did you not understand?  :-? ojas25... Perhaps you COULD SHARE with us what kind of files you are trying to recover .

dl65  ojas25 - Before you can recover deleted files you have to understand a bit about what happens when a file is deleted.

Were the files "deleted" to the Recycle BIN or deleted when the Recycle Bin was cleared or deleted using Shift+Del :-?

Here is a worthwhile read.

I recommend Restoration as an easy to use file recovery program.  Google for it.

Good luck

Solve : website with my home town information?

Answer»

My young SON accidently accesed an adult site.   I was sitting right next to him.

My issue is that the site flashed that  "Girls"  from XXXXX are waiting to meet you.

XXXX was the name of the Town we live in.

I was very surprised  that something on my PC gave then  the location of my PC.

I run my spyware programs and anti virus evetyday.  I usually run the  Trend Housecall   everyweek.   These programs found nothing.

Can you provide any insight on this happended and what I can do to PREVENT this from happening again.   I assume this can can happen on non adult website also.

Thanks

It can happen on any site. Do you have a a firewall installed? How are you connnected to the internet?I use Zone Alarm Pro.   All my internet connections  go through a router.

I have a HIGH speed connection using Verizon FIOS service.

Do you have all the latest windows secuity updates? http://windowsupdate.microsoft.comthepilot...... I suspect , that the site your son connected to ...... picked up your IP address ....and automated software did the rest .
I would run CCLeaner and it will remove anything from the temp / temp internet/history/cookies etc. ....... I would doubt that , that software would pinpoint your exact address but rather the city of origin.

dl65
Yes it found our town not my home address.

I ran everything I had access to ( spyware programs) , Ccleaner, NAV Corporate , Trend Housecall, a trial trojan program .

My windows fixes are uptodate

I went to same website  last night and the same thing SHOWED up.

I still not sure why my IP address is being linked to my town

Thanks for the input  IP addresses can be regional, that's all.  its ur i.p. , dont be surprised.

bridgers (basically cheaters, if u didnt know) on xbox live know my ISP and the city i live in. all from my i.p.Is this something my ISP allows somebody to do or does not care to stop.

Could my ISP stop this if they wanted to ?

Thanks

Tomim pretty sure they just dont care. letting ppl know the city u live in is not considered to be an invasion of privacy because the area is too big, it doesnt tell anyone ur exact address. i live in abbotsford, but i get ads for MISSION, sumas, and maple ridge. (neighboring cities if u didnt know). as for ppl knowing ur ISP, i guess its a little bit of advertising for them. Quote

I still not sure why my IP address is being linked to my town

Think of it like a zip code. The zip code is linked to post office in your town. The IP is linked to the ISP server in your town. The difference is that you CAN receive a letter without zip code, but you CANNOT receive internet traffic without an IP. Every site you access must know the IP address in order to to know where to send the information. Here is a site which will track almost any ip and show the country/city and other details, even show a map of the city location.

And here is a forum which displays the ip of everyone who posts.  The unease this causes me is the only reason I no longer visit the forum.

I have been assured that no-one can track my actual residential address from the information but the skill of trawlers is improving and who knows when.....

We should all be hidden behind a proxy but that's not always possible.

Val..At geobytes I get:
We are unable to locate the address xx.150.237.27 at this time.
Yes, that can happen, that's why I posted that Geobytes Locator tool will track almost any ip.  Try another

Solve : not fining the correct boot drive?

Answer»

when i go into BIOS it does list the correct boot drive. All it list is floppy or CDrom drive.  I just got a new motherboard because i was told that was the ISSUE. Same thing is coming as before.  Any KNOW how i can correct this issue? Is the hard drive loaded with Windows from the other motherboard? That will probably not work anyway.

Are you sure the hard drive is jumpered correctly? Is it seen correctly in the BIOS? What happened PRIOR to all of this? Any monkeying about inside the case? Are you the only one with access to this computer.

Some info, actually any info, WOULD be helpful.

I am running windows XP and I get a security information window that pops up.  It reads "This page contains both SECURE and nonsecure items.  Do you want to display the nonsecure items?"

I thought that unchecking warn if changing between secure and nonsecure mode under Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced would fix but it didnt SEEM to help.

If any ONE knows how I can fix this I would really appriciate it.

Thanks. This exact subject was addressed at the www.experts-exchange.com in this post: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Browser_Issues/Q_21225504.html.

Here's a direct copy of the answer from the user "SheharyaarSaahil":

"...goto Tools>Internet Options>Security>select Internet Zone and click on Costum Level
look under Miscellaneous heading.... there should be an option called Display Mixed Content
is it set to Prompt? if YES then set it to Disable and apply..."

Solve : Red cross icon and wired card’s MAC address disabl?

Answer»

I have got win2003 server laptop with 2 NIC CARDS :
1- Wired ( Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller)
2- Wireless (Dell Wireless WLAN 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card)

At work (not at home) when I plugged the internet cable (I tried more than ONE cable, because I though the problem with the cable itself) to wired card , I still can see there is a red cross is being displayed on top of the icon

I tried more than one wall jack socket still with different cables (of course I am using the right cable straight through), I still can see there is a red cross is being displayed on top of the icon,,,,

Definitely all cables and all wall jack sockets are working because when I tried the same cable and the same wall jack socket on other PCs, they work.

The test that I did were :

i- I did test to check the wired card, I connected my laptop and another PC directly by using cross over cable, it worked (i.e. there is no red cross).

ii- I tried to assign static ip address at work (not home) still the same problem is going on.

iii- I did another test At home I tried to use the wired card (normally I used wireless card) , I have got no problem , (i.e when I plugged the cable there is no red cross on the NIC card, unlike at work).

Note:

A- With wireless I have got no problem to ACCESS the internet at work and at home

B- I do not THINK that the problem with DHCP server at work,,,,because it is only my laptop has got this problem, if the problem with DHCP server then it should be with all PCs and laptops at work.

Query
Is there any possibility that the administrator mistakenly disabled the wired card (by using MAC address identification) for my laptop from accessing the internet via wired card (not wireless, since it has got different MAC)?When was the last time your network card was working?
What were you doing before it stopped working? Any loading of new drivers?
Have you tried rolling back the driver?

Solve : How do I change where windows boots from??

Answer»

I recently installed Windows98 over my previous Windows98 so I could replace some things.
How do I MAKE it so when I turn on the computer, it goes to the old Windows98 INSTEAD of the new one? This is a disaster waiting to HAPPEN. You should format the drive and reinstall Windows fresh rather than an over the top "dirty" INSTALL which usually retains the problems you were trying to fix.

Solve : increasing local memory for display device?

Answer»

hi, i want to give my display device (video card) ATI Mobility Radeon 9000IGP/9100IGP more local memory so i am able to play Battle Field 2. i have 64 but i need 128. i have a laptop with xp professional with all updates including drivers for sound/video card. everything is up to date. i just need to know how to boost the memory to 128. i have 702mb free ram, and about 18gb free of harddisk space. some one plz help me.If the BIOS in your laptop supports allocating 128MB of system RAM to video, then you can do it.  If it doesn't, you can not.  You need to determine, based on the specs for you laptop, whether it would allow allocating more than 64MB to video.  You should be able to determine this by accessing the BIOS settings screen and seeing what your options are for shared video memory.sry, im kinda a noob. how do i access BIOS and wut is it? can u walk me through somehow? Here are two references that should help:

Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS, and
How to get into your computer's BIOS.

You'll need to carefully WATCH your screen while the computer is starting, as soon as you turn the power on.  Look for "Setup" on the screen, and hit the appropriate key at that moment to access the BIOS.thanks.also can my computer have more than 1 graphics card, (compaq presario r3000 laptop 2003/2004)? my vid. card is not COMPATIBLE with bf2 and i would want to get another one but leave my old one how it is STILL. maybe there is a way 2 switch back and forth if i have 2?No, your computer can not have more than 1 graphics card and, no, you won't be able to swap cards in and out of the laptop.  Due to the compact design of laptops, they are made with intergrated graphics rather than removable video cards.   If you can't play bf2 with it, you really have no choice but to get a computer that is capable of playing it.
What are the system requirements for the game. As above, I suspect you do not have a machine with a n appropriate graphics adapter and it will never work well if at all. Desktops are better equipped for gaming and have expandibility which laptop do not.  hold on, i LOST the box, ILL try n find itneeds 1.7ghz, i have 2.4. needs 128 local display memory, i have 128.i have 37.25gb harddrive, used 18.9, pass for game. ati mobility radeon 9000igp/9100igp video card, unsure if this will work. thats all the important stuff. So, you found that your laptop allows allocating 128MB of memory to video.  Is that right?   What do you mean by " pass for game"?  And, you say, "ati mobility radeon 9000igp/9100igp video card".   You were replying to the question about the system requirements for the game, right?  So, the game calls for "ati mobility radeon 9000igp/9100igp video card", which is what your laptop has.  Is that correct?

Even so, integrated video never performs as well as a separate video card.  So, your laptop simply may not be adequate to play that game.yes, it can allocate more memory, thanks for that part. i did this easyinfo test that comes with the game and it says pass, fail, or unable to tell. i was replying to the question about system requirements, yes. it does not call for my particular graphics card anywhere in the pamphlet or easyinfo test. it does have that card that i listed. can i add another card to my computer? No, you can't add a card.  As I said back in post#6, and as GX1_MAN said, laptops are not upgradable as far as video is concerned.  ok, thx. do u no where i can get a cheap gaming desktop by chance? You will need to go for a custom system or have one built to your specs. The pre-fab ones from Compaq, HP, etc. will not be suitable for high end gaming.

Solve : Windows XP will only boot into safe mode?

Answer»

I have a Dell P4 computer running Windows XP home. Last night we had a thunder and lightning storm. I have a surge protector, but everything was plugged into the surge protector.  The phone modem line had no surge protection.  I can now only boot into safe mode.  I have removed the modem thinking maybe it took a hit from the storm. Removing the modem did not solve the problem.  Any thoughts on what to do?

Thanks,
SteveWhat i would do is ,

Run MS config and TURN off any items that are on start up , and i would disable any non MS services , if you cant tell what are and are not services just leave them alone.

i would also reinstall my drivers, and uninstall the modem driver if you THINK its at FAULT

i tried to install WINDOWS xp home and said the activation number has exceeded it's maxium amount.

how many TIMES can i install it ?

do i have to buy a new one ?

i will also EMAIL microsoft n ask.Yes, you have to phone Microsoft to install it again. Great idea, huh?   it's a copy, would it matter ?If it is a copy of YOUR CD and it is not installed on another computer you should be fine. If it is a copy of SOMEONE else's CD or if that copy is already installed on another machine you will need to go to the store and buy your own legal copy.

Fordtruckmaniac....  Your right you have only posted perhaps 1/2 of the log ...... the last entry should be a 023 entry ......... and there are a lot missing in between ..... have another look at the saved log and the rest should be there.

dl65  I pasted from top to bottom on the log file. ? The actual "results" window on the program was not even filled after running the scan. There is no scrolling down to find more. That is it.

I will go back and look at it again though. I posted from the old computer after I loaded and ran the program.

Thanks, Fordtruckmaniac....  I just had another look and I realised that its win98SE your using ......... So thats all of it .

This old Proteva had no AV at all. No adware, malware, spyware protection. Nothing!!! It was pretty wrecked. Tons of search this and that crap set in it, worms, trojans.

Solve : cant load windows?

Answer»

my dads computer wont start windows, when it tries to start it it just restarts the whole computer. same with safe mode, etc. what should i do?oh yeah, the cd rom drive isnt working either, so i cant use a windows xp cd to try and boot from....So it is not that it won't start Windows, it is that it won't start. It is a hardware problem. What happened prior to this? Do you have any experience fixing computers? It might be best to go to the shop. How about some details about the machine. It sounds like that new virus, W32/IRCbot.worm!MS05-039:
Indications of Infection
If this worm is run on a system which has not yet been patched for the MS05-039 vulnerability, it may reboot.
 (and that means reboot continuously)

Read more about it here:

If you have a boot disk for DOS or something like that, you might have a chance of fixing your computer yourself, or it could also be a hardware problem. Do you see the BIOS screen while starting the computer?
I'll stick with a hardware issue.  GX1_Man, I have a quick question:
If Boomers computer does display the BIOS or the startup screen for the computer (not the OS) then would it still be a hardware problem? One THING I would like to know is if only the OS can be affected by a hardware problem.A BIOS screen takes minimal computer resources, whereas when Windows starts it's gyrations it taxes the system. I am unclear from the original poster's MESSAGE how far into the process this happens, but it sounds like QUIKLY. As you know a hardware problem can stop a computer booting at ANY point in a variety of ways.Aloha -- I believe I am having a similar problem with my HP Pavillion a255c desktop, with a Pentium 4 and windows xp.  I ran my norton virus scan on the c drive 3 days ago -- and when I came home, there was a black screen with NTLDR is missing message.  Then press ctrl+alt+del  to restart (which doesn't work).  The only F key that works is F1.

I have my backup windows files on a d: partition -- not on a DISC.  I downloaded discs as directed when I got it, but it will not boot from them.  I got a friend's windows xp boot disc and can boot from that, but it takes me to choices i'm not familiar with.

...to set up windows xp press enter
...to repair windows xp installation using recovery console press r (I tried this and it takes me to D:  where my backup is -- but it gives me DOS codes and i'm afraid i might PUT in the wrong thing.

Any recommendations? :-?

Solve : Please help!: No icons, start menu!?

Answer»

Hi
Ok this is quite a big problem i fear...

My computer wont load up the Icons or start menu, it doesnt even load up Windows properly:
When i get to the desktop background screen i cannot open up task manager to run explorer.
I also cannot run the XP CD to repair it becuase it wont let me hit f8, or run it automaticly, it just flashes a black screen and goes into windows pro

This is bad becuase i need all of the software on my computer  :-/

Ill be very gratefull to the person who can help me

Thanx ScampiWhen Windows loads, has the taskbar disappeared as well?
When you shutdown your computer, do you have to cold BOOT it?

Gizmo73
Erm cold boot?
But yes there is no taskbar... only the desktop background :S

SEnter your computer's BIOS (usually by repeatedly pressing F1, F2, Esc or Del when you switch the PC on).  FInd the option to select which device to boot from first - set that to CD>. Pop in your XP CD and reboot.  Follow the onscreen instructions.Thats just the thing.... it doesnt ask me to go into BIOS.
Sorry if i never made that clear
It flashes a black screen for about a second!! before going to the users in windows.

SWhat make/model is your PC?Its an IBM... cant say the model IM sorry.Download and run Belarc Advisor (it's free) and you will know the exact model and a LOT more!

www.belarc.comHow am i meant to load anything onto that computer :S
Its imposible

SOn the outside of the case should be a 7 digit identification number like xxxx-xxx.

What happened before all of this? It WOULD be a strange thing to happen spontaneously. Are you the only person using this machine? No I think i had a trojan...  :-/

My computer gave me a weird Error, then shut its self down :S

Bit of a PICKLE

S

The method of entering the BIOS on IBMs varies.  A couple of possibilities: hold down both mouse buttons during boot-up; or press F1

In the latter case, start tapping the F1 key from the second you switch on the PC, until you enter the BIOS setup screen.Thank You

Ill try it

SI dont know if this will help but give it a go. to get your icons back you will need a flash memory stick (PLUGS into usb) and have on it a shortcut to %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe. Then open up the shortcut and type regedit. it will then open up registry editor where you then need to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\explorer\Advanced    then find HideIcons double click on it and change the 1 to a 0. This will then show your icons. Then hopefully you will have a shortcut to my computer on your desktop. If you do open it and open c:\ and do a search for rstrui.exe.
open up the program and roleback your computer to a date that the computer was working fine. Then to finish do a virus scan because you more then likely have a virus\trojan.
Hope this helpsThank You Also

Solve : No Hope for 386?

Answer»

please help me
i have an old 386DX computer and it doesn't have even DOS it doesn't have anything on it at all
please tell me how to install on it an OS

newer OS than win95 wouldn't run on this comp
it has 4mb ram and its processor is 33mhz and a hdd with ~160mb
it has only a 3.5 floppy

(sorry if i have any mistakes but i don't know ENGLISH quite well)
I wouldn't even try Win95 on that.  Win 3.1, perhaps (yuck), or a very stripped down Linux.

It all depends on what you want to do with the PC, really.  What DO you want to do with this PC?DOS and Win3.1, but do you have any software to install? What is the point of this drill?i have plenty software for win 3.11
i even have the 3.11 DISKETTES and some dos diskettes but i dont know how to install dos
the diskettes just wont boot
the problem isnt from bios im 100% sure
i just need a good full dos instalation files which i will write to a diskette

There are 3 DOS diskettes for 6.0 to 6.2 if we are talking MS-DOS. You restart the machine with disk 1 in the floppy and install from there. You are positive the machine is 100% functional? What happens when you boot with disk 1 in there? What version of DOS is this? Is this a full install set or an upgrade set or what?Alternatively, try installing >FreeDOS<.when i boot the diskette this message appears:
"remove disks or any other media
 press any key to restart"
and when i remove the diskette and i press something it says that i must put a system diskette in
i tried with all msdos versions it DIDNT WORK always the same
if i just turn on the computer with no diskette in the floppy it again says that needs a system diskette
what is system diskette?
where could i find one which will work?

but the comp CAN boot a diskette i booted the ms dos start up diskette which is made by winXP and it started a dos but it couldnt do anything usefull and it didnt install any dos on the hddtry taking it to the shooting range....

Solve : Changing Reset Settings?

Answer»

I have a computer that has Windows 98SE on it.

The problem i am having is i have no reset button, so i want to change my shutdown button to reset when i press it. When my computer freezes it completely locks up and the Ctrl+Alt+Del does no work so i have to shutdown by pressing the shutdown the turn it back on quickly.

What i want to do is change it so i can use it for reseting.

When i press the shutdown button it auto switches off, i want it so i have to hold it for AROUND 5 seconds before it switches off and when i press it once quickly it resets.

Is there anyway i can change this? Because i fear i could cause serious damage if i continue doing this.  :-/It sounds LIKE the MACHINE has other issues which should be addressed.

Why don't you post some very specific info about the computer, operating system, history, etc.The OS is 98SE, as for history i'm not to sure as i got it for free from an uncle who is a REGISTERED technician...

Some specs:
Pentium 2
350MHz
6 gig HD
Matrox MGA Gfx card (I'd say really old)
I recently installed an ESS sound card which from what i can tell works fine( I think  :-?, i'm at school now so i'd have to check when i get home)

I have also been installing anti-virus software etc lately just for some extra protection.

It's also been freezing rather often, i have had no problems with it as such but ever since i installed AVG it went haywire, but i don't think that is the problem because it's very trusted software and works fine on my computer.

This is the reason i would like to change the reset setting so i don't wreck anything by pressing the shutdown button all the time...

Sorry if this is not enough info, but i can't really do much from school. If the problem started after installing AVG, disable it from running at startup and see if the problem goes away. Or disable its real time SCANNING and see how it works.

EDIT: In 9x you only have two options for the power button, shutdown and standby. If the computer is completely locked up, the only recourse is shutdown. If you still have use of the mouse or the keyboard you can reboot using a batch file. Was WIndows freshly installed? If not you may have inherited problems, possibly made worse by running without an antivirus.

Do you have a CD to reinstall if needed?Sorry for slow reply.

Windows 98SE was freshly installed, i did all the driver updating etc.. so nothing wrong there.

But lately it has been booting very slow (which i suspect is the AVG, so i will disable it loading at boot) and freezing unexpectedly. And when it does freeze i lose all ability to use the mouse and keyboard, so i can't even do a ctrl+alt+del reset.... this is the dilema i am having, because i have to keep pressing shutdown and then turning it back on

Solve : Monitor cuts out when windows loads?

Answer»

I'm using Windows XP. When XP has finished loading (i.e. the loading BAR on the black background stops) or at least seems to have finished, all signal to my monitor stops; it just GOES into standby mode.

The only system change made was a driver update to my graphics card, an NVidia GeForce 5500, a few days ago, but it worked fine then. My PC is not connected to the Internet.

When it runs scandisk on its own after having been rebooted without Windows being able to shut down properly, the colours are messed up. Where the light blue should be it is a light brown, and the dark blue becomes green.

It runs through okay on safe mode, and I tried a system restore, but after restarting automatically in order to restore, it went into scandisk and REPORTED that a lot of files that seemed to pertain to system restore had been corrupted in some way.

Is this a hardware issue, or do I NEED a full XP reinstall?deadmanstanding... Well , I would be inclined to remove the vid card as a test .
and then reboot the pc with out the card ...... Does it have a onboard vid card by any chance ?

dl65  There is no onboard graphics card, however, upon examining the graphics card, I noticed that it was not fully in the motherboard; it had come loose at the end. Fixing it corrected the colours of Scandisk, but failed to fix my problem.

I tried a system restore back to 11th May, and that seems to have fixed it, so whatever the problem was, itmust have been software I put on in the last week.

Fix'd.

Sounds like a virus.  Consider purchasing, installing, updating and doing a full system scan with a good anti-virus program.

DocHi pcdoc4christ I already scanned it with Zone Alarm Security Suite.. and it reports nothing.. 0 infections found.. should i download NOD32 and try that one.. and disable Zone Alarm..?Don't disable ZoneAlarm. Try to check your computer with alternative programs, like Avast!, AVG (these 2 are antiviruses, with free versions to use at home), Spybot Search&Destroy, Lavasoft Adaware (antispyware programs with free versions to use at home). Call us back after you recheck the computer. Quote
Hi pcdoc4christ I already scanned it with Zone Alarm Security Suite.. and it reports nothing.. 0 infections found.. should i download NOD32 and try that one.. and disable Zone Alarm..?

Zone Labs makes a good firewall, but i'm not so sure about their anti-virus software (if it is anti-virus software).  Keep in mind that anti-spyware and anti-virus software are not the same animal.  In addition, even the best anti-virus program can miss a virus, so it is a good practice to try other methods:

I'd suggest doing the following:

1. Try a few of the free online virus scans:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-29,GGLG:en&q=free+online+virus+scan

2. Download and run the free AVG anti-virus program:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

3. Consider trying a trial version of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus program:

http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat2/ec_MAIN.Entry17C?SID=49997&SP=10024&CID=0&PID=&PN=29&S1=&S2=&S3=&S4=&S5=&V1=31040595&V2=31040595&V3=1&V4=10&V5=&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0

(Unlike AVG, you will have to pay to continue to use it after the first two weeks.)

Solve : Cant start up computer as it just keeps restarting?

Answer»

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me. I have a lap top that I currently cant use as when I go to turn it on it gets to the first windows logo (and it looks like its going to open up windows) then a blue screen pops up for less then a second and then the computer restarts. This just keeps happening over and over again.

It dosnt allow me to start windows up their fore I cant run any virus checks.

Dose anyone know anything I can do to fix this.

Thanks .How about a detail or two, like computer make and model, what happened prior to this, how OLD, is it still under warranty, ETC.?

Its a Compaq Presario 2500. I had been downlaoding music that day and when I went to turn the computer off it reset itself and would only get to the windows load up page then a blue screen would pop up for not even a second then it would reset again. This process would just keep happening. Now every time that I turn my computer on the same thing happens and it can not be used.

It was bought almost 2 years ago and I think the warrenty may be out.try starting it in safe MODE then do virus checks.yea I tried that, that dosent work. It still COMES up to the windows page, then a blue screen for less then a second then restarts.
pop in ur windows cd and attempt to repair it.I would suggest burning a Linux Live CD to see if this is hardware or software related. With a LAPTOP there is little you can do to repair, but it would let us know where the problems are.

Here is a link to Knoppix 4.02. Download the file and then burn the ISO to a CD with Nero, etc.

http://iso.linuxquestions.org/distro.php?distro=5

Do you have a real, shiny Windows CD to reinstall or a Compaq recovery CD? When did this problem start? Was it just like this or was it gradual?

Solve : Computer problem (multiple questions)?

Answer»

Okay where do I start?  I generally leave my computer going all the time.  EVIDENTLY something happened while I was gone I came home from work and my computer was turned off.  I tried to start it ..nothing no power..okay power supply box went out on me no big deal, i've had to replace it before.  Well I finally got around to getting another supply box I installed it everything is hooked up.  Went to turn it on..YAY we have power.  Well when it booted up it would get just past the log on screen and then it locks up.  Turned it off tried again it locked up at the log in screen. Turned it off tried again tried to start with safe mode so I could do a system restore I got that far that time then it locked up again.  After many..MANY restarts it would lock up at different areas. Sometimes at the black screen where it asks which mode to start, I even let it do the countdown to starting windows (on the safe mode option screen) and it would lock up on the count down. It never would freeze at any one certain spot.  I could hear the hard drive doing it's "grinding" then it would just stop when it froze/locked up.  I tried ctl/alt/del it would do nothing.
I'm not sure if this is due to a virus or a bad hard drive or what?  Is there anyway to find out with it doing this? Is there anyway to make it go further so I can find out what's causing it?  I have A LOT of stuff on my hard drive I don't WANT to lose.  I'm fairly sure I hooked all the cables up correctly when installing the power supply box. I did notice the fan over the processor was REALLY dirty and I cleaned that out, could I have fried the motherboard/processor by it getting over heated from the fan being dirty.. help please! TYA
BethThe real question is what happened when it went out. Was it a power surge that damaged other components? Is it a failure of the fan and the CPU overheated?  (If an AMD, this can be critical, but you didn't say what you had.) The first thing would be to slave that drive to a working computer with a CDRW to back up your data (and not on CDRW discs!). Then you can pursue this mystery. As the hard drive locks up you run the risk of damaging sectors and compromising the data.

I'll hold off on the importance of  BACKING up valuable data on a ahard drive alone. They all die sometimes, which is why a regular backup strategy to optical media is essential.

Another idea would be to boot the machine with a Linux Live CD to see if the drive is intact and can be read and then copy to a pen drive, across a network, etc.  it won't even touch that hard drive. If the hard drive is already bad the data may be already gone, except for expen$ive data recovery services. It's a Pent 4 Processor no name "brand" type computer this one was built for me so it's not LIKE a Dell, Compaq, etc.  The fan on the power supply had been making some noises off and on prior to going to out so I'm thinking the powersupply just went out.  Which it had done this to me before one day it just didn't COME back on and I had to replace the power supply box but what else it did when that happened I haven't a clue so that is why I'm baffled it locks up during different parts of the boot up process.

The computer I am on working now is basically the same thing just a different motherboard was also built.  How would I go about taking my other HD and put it with this one for it to work?  I'm clueless when it comes to this.

About the backing up data.  I did back up a lot of data and I have most of all my stuff I want off the other HD it's just I have some graphic programs on the other one and I add "extras" added on to them and I just like the way that was working for me rather than having to go through allllllll setting back up again.  I have downloaded some of the programs on the one I'm on now, but it's just not the same, I really liked my old computer!! LOL
So I guess any info on how to put old HD with this one and to try and fix it or troubleshoot or transfer data help would be MUCH appreciated and thank you so much for the info so far!  How big are the hard drives, and what are the other system specs comparing what you had to what you are now using? What operating system? The HD I'm having problems with is a 40GB the one I'm on now is not quite as big.  Both are using XP Professional.  Is that what you're wanting to know?Take the 40 gig drive and jumper it asw Slave (SL) and connect it to the IDE cable that hold the drive in the working computer. You do not have to physically install the drive. Just connect the data cable and a power cable to it.

Next turn on the machine and go to the BIOS/Setup and see if the drive is there. If so escape out of there and let WIndows boot. Can you see the files on it?

http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-hard-drive.htm

http://www.pcguide.com/byop/byop_SettingHardDriveJumpers.htm

http://www.driverzone.com/guides/hd/install/hdinstall_p1.htmlLOL ok, dumb question here.  I know what you're talking about with the jumper and slave thing.  Component side down looking at the HD the jumper is on the second pins   what do I move it to make it slave?LOL nevermind you answered that already thanks! I'll let ya know in a bit!ok, I'm guessing it's recognized i'm doing a scan disk on it right now.  When I clicked on My Computer it shows C drive and F drive and it's showing the HD now.    Just copy the data files off if you want. It sounds like you're fixed!  It's still doing the scan disk and checking for errors.  So, if there is nothing wrong with my HD is the motherboard or processor causing the problems on the other computer?

And thank you for all the help ing for sure what happened, the possibilities are motherboard, RAM, CPU (probably in that order of likelihood). You can try booting it up without the hard drive and see what happens. I would unhook any other drives and add in cards besides the video and only one stick of RAM. If it boots up to POST without error, let it run for a while. Then you can add one thing at a time and see what causes the problem.

Solve : Retrieving old Outlook mail / contacts?

Answer»

Hi,

Recently re-installed Windows XP (Home Ed), which was a newer version of what was originally on SYSTEM. Wjen asked if I wanted to format drives, I selectd no - keep current file system in tact.

Now that it is up and running, nothing is actively installed! I installed a newer version of Office, but can't get hold of my old mail. All my old files appear to be there in Program Files on the old drive, just can't find the mail. I've done a search for *.pst files, but nothing comes up.

I'm sure the data is there, how do I find it?

Many thanks.... :-/Why are you sure the data is there? Even though you didn't reformat the drive, blank new files could have overwritten the old files. There are other dangers in just doing a dirty over the top install  beyond keeping previous problems. Does your search turn up ANY files with the extension you listed? It turns up one .pst file, but that is related (I think) to the new version of Office.

If the FBI can turn up files from a HDD that have INTENTIONALLY been deleted, surely my old mail files that I did not (intentiaonally anyway) delete should be there in some format.

Other programs from the old Program File directory are able to be re-installed no problems......In the old documents and settings folder, in username_folder->application data (this one is hidden, you have to activate the option "Show hidden files and directories" and maybe "Show system files" in Tools->Folder Options->View ) ->Microsoft->Outlook. There is your pst.Half WAY there - got to show hidden files, found Applicationa Data -> Microsoft, but no Outlook folder..............Sorry, found some files which look like the ones, but can't copy and paste - "Access denied". Any Ideas??I have windows xp in my computer. I want to format drive c and then reinstall windows xp, need information for the steps from A to Z.

Thanks & regards
stop outlook, stop messenger
(this should fix the PROBLEM with access denied)
Yes, I fogot to mention the right path to pst files...
c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook
My apologies for incovenience

Solve : ork?

Answer»

Hi - I have an ex-network Windows 98 computer (Research Machines Connect 2.4 - does not function as pure Windows) which I want to make standalone without REFORMATTING the hard drive and REINSTALLING windows (it has lots of registered programs as part of my school's site licence, which I cannot replace individually - the server is now dead and gone and many of the disks, too).

I cannot log on since the machine is not connected to the network. I have been given some registry tweeks to make the the machine funcion as a standalone, however, safe mode seems to been disabled so I can't get in to install them - i.e. I cannot use F8, non-bootable disk METHOD, DOS command etc.. How can I either re-enable safe mode, or install the registry fragments in DOS (am a total novice with DOS)? I was given a route using "edit C:msdos.sys", adding ";" before two entries, but the file is "read only" and I don't know how to change that in DOS. Any help gratefully received. PeterThe msdos.sys file has the read only, hidden, and SYSTEM attributes set. You will need to  remove them to edit the file. At the dos prompt: ATTRIB -h -r -s to remove them. After the edit and save, add them back with attrib +h +r +s.

Solve : it said missing operating system *pls help*?

Answer»

This post appeared in my mailbox TODAY. Any takers?

I did FDISK my desk top awhile ago because I wanted to run windows 98 or windows Me. Before I did it the SYSTEM was windows XP. Now, everytime I wants to install windows 98 CD (i firstly reboot the a:\> with diskette) but it say missing operating system. And, when I switched to C:\> PROMPT to setup, it said failure and need to abort.

I tried to changed the 1st boot device in CMOS from Floppy to HDD-1 but it doesn' help at all.

*Please help me*

---AndyIf you do not have a bootable CD version of Windows, then floppy would be the choice. By choosing to boot from the hard disk, you will have nothing there to boot.

So boot with the boot disk and type in e:setup and press enter (with the Win98 CD in the drive).

Solve : INTERNET job APPLICATIONS don't work.?

Answer»

Ok, i am 17 and looking for a job like most teenagers right? Well anyway most people only accept online applications from people anymore. So i checked out a few near by me ...BLOCKBUSTER, Price Chopper and CVS. Now i apllied for each one (not on the same day) and called after a week had past to see if they had received my application. Everyone on of them said they never got my application. What could be the problem? I told my mother about it  and she said that i prolly wasn;t FILLING them out right but i did every time i did one , at the end they ALWAYS said "Thanks for applying at so and so" so does anyone know what i can do?

If so please email me right away at [email protected]!

Thanks bunches. No job application will ever be as successful as the face to face (polite) APPROACH.  They can't deny they got your application then...Topic closed. Open topic will remain in Internet Explorer section.

Solve : desk top does not cover entire screen-how to fix??

When I turned on my laptop today, the desktop does not cover the entire screen.  How do I make it increase to entire screen?  Thanks for anyone's help! :-?Try this..What kind of windows do you. have? here is something that might help.. go to your desktop and RIGHT CLICK and select proporties. and then on the top tabs select Settings and increas your screen resolution.. and that might help.. Tell us how it goes.. k
use monitor controls. buttons on the monitor hit menu then go to a symbol to stretch and move it untill it is how u want pitch and center are the options u want to changeSounds like the resolution needs to change - I guess you have a black outline all around the desktop?

Right-click on the desktopm choose Properties.  Click the Settings tab.  Drag the screen resolution slider (bottom left) to change the resolution.  You may need to try one or two settings to get it right.Wow - everyone replied at once!  I think Maksim's and my solutions are the ones to try; uncontrolled_teen is referring to the procedure with a CRT monitor (which doesn't apply to laptops).thanks for everyone's help.  i did try incresing the screen resolution, hit apply then ok but it just went back to the original setting.  i RESTARTED the computer but that didn't work either.  any more suggestions?Bit more detail please.  What is the screen resolution set to, what did you change it to, and what EXACTLY happened when it CHANGED back on its own?sorry, I got busy and failed to answer back.  finally got it to take the change in screen resolution.  don't know why it wouldn't work at first, but now it's okay and thanks to all!Great!  Do COME back if you have any other problems.

Solve : Question about net connection thru XP?

Answer»

Ok...

Lately my browsers and e-mail have been sluggish as *censored*.  I have cable connection with Zone Alarm firewall.

Ran anti-virus (AVG and eTrust), Ad-Aware and SpyDoctor as well as a registry check.

When I start up GAIM it runs fine, but the browser and e-mail takes forever to render a page/e-mail and when it does finally do it, it goes in "spurts".

I already uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and Thunderbird as well.

I am stumped...

any advice?About 2 months ago, my son's computer got to the point it would not display a web page in IE.  If he opened IE, it simply displayed a blank page.  We determined the OS partition on his partitioned hard drive was getting quite full.  He moved My DOCUMENTS from C:\ to D:\, freeing up some space on C:\ and then his web browsing returned to normal.

How much free space (absolute and percentage-wise) on your OS drive/partition?

Also, how long since you deleted temporary internet files?  Might help do do that; deleting cookies and clearing history might also help. That isn't the problem, but thank you. What isn't?  The free space, or cleanup of temporary internet files, etc.?I have plenty of free space and I delete my temp files all the timeGAIM is instant messaging, right?  And, if you're just sending text back and forth, that takes very little bandwidth.  I suggest you visit http://www.dslreports.com/tools and run a speed test.  This should give you some solid EVIDENCE of whether you have any hardware issues affecting your internet speed, such as a failing modem.  The modem is fine because I have a wireless card on a laptop connected via router thru my DESKTOP and that is fine.

This problem is really bugging me because I can't figure it out at all.OK, then why not run a speed test with both computers and compare the results.  And, then run the Tweaks test; that one identifies possible Windows settings that may be causing a slowdown in connection speed and recommends changes.Trying to but the page isn't loading for some REASON....  as soon as it does I will do the tests.

Solve : I can't play DVD's?

Answer»

Hello, Up untill last week i could play DVD's on my laptop, and all of a sudden an Error message started to come up. Stating:The DVD cannot be played.  Key exchange for DVD copy protection FAILED. On occasion i have MANAGED to get a DVD to play, but it will have no sound - (i can listen to music stored on my computer though, so i no its not the computer), but more often than not that message appears. Im using genuine DVD's bought from shops, not copies, and i have played them all many times before, so i know its not the dvd's. Ive tried to play them on RealPlay, Microsoft media player and Power cinema and i get the same message for each of these programmes. Ive also tried to re-download the programmes, and i get the same message. Ive also tried a system restore, this didn't work. Im using a Packard Bell Easynote L laptop, and it runs Microsoft Windows XP. Any idea's? This is driving me mad. Thanks in advance. JenJen x xYou should have used your Google button:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814846I had googled my question, i have literally exhausted every option apart from this forum or paying £1.50 a minute to ring the company, and have some part-timer read from the same FAQ ive been using. I had read that answer, with LITTLE understanding. However my confusion lies in the fact that i have been playing the same DVD's for the past year on this laptop with no trouble at all. I have changed nothing on my laptop. They are not copied DVD's either, as previously mentioned in my question, all bought from shops, not pirate copies. So im not exactly sure if that link answers my query, if it does, can someone please translate, into terms someone with little computer knowledge can understand. Thanks very much in advance. JenJen x xDO you have service pack 2 installed and all updates?  Do you have Direct x 9.0c installed? If not sure look inn Windows explorer  Help/About and then go to Start/Run and type in dxdiag and press enter.

After this is fixed you MAY need to reinstall your DVD software. What are you using?

Solve : DESKTOP VIEW IS SPLIT?

Answer»

The DESKTOP on our computer is split into two vertical sections.    The icons are on the right and on the left is an EXPLORER-LIKE view.

Can you help me get rid of the split screen?

Thank you very much.

Mark  CAPTAIN Vic.......  You've probably heard this before , but "a picture is worth a thousand words" ...... so how about posting a screen shot of your issue .
Is this something which simply occurred or was someone playing around and changed something ?
Which operating system are we dealing with ?

I am sorry, I should have given you more detailed information.

It is not my computer, it belongs to my children, which unfortunately is not at my residence.     I will get a screen shot to you A.S.A.P.

COMPUTER DETAILS:

INTEL INTEGRATED GRAPHICS 82845

Thank you very much for your time.

Mark

A PIC IS FORTHCOMING.I have attached a picture of the desktop.

Thank you,

MarkIf you go to: Right-click desktop-->Properties-->Desktop tab-->Customize desktop button-->Web tab; what do you see in the list of web pages? Captain Vic .......  It almost sounds like someone has been doing some tweaking of XP ........  I am going to try and post a very small RAR file .......

This application will correct the REGISTRY setting that causes the Common Tasks pane to appear on the Windows XP Desktop.

The correct value is:  file://%userappdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

And exists in:

HKCR\CLSID\{00021400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex\ExtShellFolderViews\{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

To use the XP_CommonTasks.zip file and save it to your hard drive Locate and DOUBLE-click the file you just saved and extract XP_CommonTasks.exe. Double click XP_CommonTasks.exe to run the utility. You will need to log off/log on or reboot for the change to TAKE effect.  There is no install/uninstall.  Simply delete the EXE file to REMOVE it.
I have not tested it but it should fix your issue.
It's not very big ....only 36 kb...... and I have checked it and it is virus free.

When I right click the desktop and then click properties, the following screen appears:

I just had a chance to try the XP_CommonTasks utility.   It seemed to work perfectly.

Thank you so very much.

I would certainly like to make a donation for all of your help, however I don't see a link from here.

Thanks again,

BTW, How did you know about that utility?

Solve : Microsoft Word driving me crazy with spacing issu!?

Answer»

I have been having lots of problems with Word lately.  My latest problem is a spacing ISSUE.  If I start a new document and I create a simple title, lets say, Chapter ONE, and I center it, then hit enter twice, and then I want to left justify and start typing text, once I hit the left justify button, it also moves the title to the left.  It's like there's a link between everything on the page.  I can't center anything WITHOUT all of the text being centered.  Any ideas?Try this and see whether it works better.  I'm assuming the default alignment is left.  IF not, please state so.  Type the title.  Now, hit Enter twice.  Now, move the cursor back to the title and hit the Center button.  Now, move the cursor back to the bottom, where you were after hitting Enter twice.  Do you still have the problem? Thanks Soybean, but it didn't work.  Everything was fine until I recently started typing a formal document for work with a title page, TOC and all that.  Now, I have so many problems, even when starting with a fresh document.  It's like all the text is linked.  If I bold something, then hit enter and try to not bold other text, it takes the bold out of everything.  But my major issue is the spacing..it's either all left justify or all center...it's so frustrating.Well, I see you have some special requirements for a formal document.  I really haven't done much of that type of work with Word.  I USE Word almost daily, but usually just for informal, personal files.

Do you use the Styles and Formatting feature?  It's on the Format menu.  When you open a blank document, what do you see in the Styles and Formatting box, to the left of the font name and size on the formatting toolbar?  Does it say Normal or something else?Man, I finally figured it out..after DAYS.  On the styles and formatting menu, I was in the Normal,n option (because that's the style I was trying to use) and I unchecked the Autocorrect button.  There ya have it..freedom to space the way I want and bold the text I want independent of anything else on the page.  Thanks~
This is one of several things that Word does "behind your back".  Go to Tools-->Autocorrect options-->AUTOFORMAT as you type.  You probably want most things switched off here, under "Apply as you type" and "Automatically as you type".  Those options can do all sorts of things you're not expecting, and produce fairly inconsistent results.  Power users don't need them.  Basic users get confused by them.  I really wonder who MS thought would like them?
