Solve : Windows Explorer trouble?

Answer»

Lately my comp has been extremly slow for two reasons: A) AVG was running a scan everyday (taken CARE of), and B) Explorer was useing 6 digits of memory (don't remember the exact number, but it was way too big). I ENDED it via task manager and started it again. Now its fine, but I WOULD like to know why this happened and if it will happen again. Any help is greatly appriciated.

What are you using for spyware protection? I would recommend using ccleaner also to remove the IE DEBRIS as well.

Solve : sound plays in only one speaker??

Answer»

whenever i PLAY music in WMP (i use 11 now, but ive always had the problem even w/ other versions) it only plays in the right speaker, and theres no sound from the left one. both speakers work whenever i play music in iTunes or Winamp and when i play any game w/ sound. so im pretty sure its a problem with my WMP settings. i used to have really bad speakers where there was only sound in the right speaker. i think that i might have changed something a while back to send all sound to the right speaker. im not sure if i changed a system SETTING or a WMP setting to do this, but SINCE sound works fine outside of WMP, i think its a WMP setting. ive looked all throught the options of WMP and cant FIND a solution to my problem. any help is greatly appreciated

ps: just in case its a sytem problem i posted in htis forumWell, if this right/left speaker settings can be controlled for WMP separately from Windows GLOBAL settings, you'd probably find it under Tools, Options, Devices, Speakers, Advanced.  I don't know whether settings there apply only to WMP or not.  If so, then you should find the answer to your question there.i couldnt find anything that would let me change anything about left/right speakers
What version of WMP?  What OS?  In my Win XP Pro computer with WMP 10, under Tools, Options, Devices, Speakers, Properties, Advanced, Volume, Speaker Volume, I see slider bars for the left and right speakers.

Solve : XP Login Graphics Problem?

Answer»

AMD 3200+
ATI Radeon 9200SE
....

When I turn on my computer, it runs through the normal process up until the XP login page where i would normally select my user account and then login.

Instead of this appearing normally, the screen goes 'crazy'. Scrolling static type lines go diagonally across the screen. The basic form of the screen is recognisable but you cannot see anything. If I tab to the login and type my password it logs in and i get a similar problem with the normal desktop and all subsequent things open. Lots of unrecognisable diagonal lines, scrolling across the screen.

I left my computer off for a WEEK (i was away from town) and when i returned it TURNED on normally. However when i turned it off and tried to turn it back on I got the same problem.

My extremely limited knowledge would suggest graphics card, or possible graphics card driver. Any help or suggestions to the problem wouled be appreciated. Your assumptions are correct. First I would try another monitor on there to make sure that is not the culprit, if possible. Then you could try to remove and reseat the card (with the computer off, of course!) Finally uninstall the driver and then reinstall the newest version from the manufacturer's web site.

Post back with your findings.  My monitor works fine on my other computer. I suspected as much, seenig as it works fine up until actually getting INTO windows.

Removed the graphics card, reseated, to no avail.

To the next question: how do you uninstall a driver, download the latest and then re-install when you can't see anything? Can you get to safe mode? (F8 at start several times before you see the garbled Windows logo.)Didn't know that.

Now do I just uninstall my current driver and re-install this one? https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBList.asp?folderID=301 (Catalyst 6.5 Windows XP - Driver Download)?

CheersYou've got it! Once you uninstall the old one, reboot to regular mode to install the new one. When Windows finds a new device (the video card) and tries to load the driver when Windows starts, tell it no and cancel. Then run the file you downloaded.

Let us know!  I downloaded the three files supplied from that link for the ADSL or whatever one.

I will reboot the other computer now and give it a shot. the driver worked perfectly, re-installed. the order i installed the components was important tho, had to install the encoder, then reboot, then the .net 2.0 framework, then the control center (for anyone who has the same problem and finds this). thanks a tonne GX1_Man... you do this forum a great favour. You're quite WELCOME. Glad you are all fixed up!

Solve : My Win Me system does not start?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a serious problem. I have installed a software and tried to run the software. The system

suddenly hung. I tried to restart the system. It adviced me to start the system in safe mode. I did

so. But it never started. It said " WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR. RESTART YOU COMPUTER" I tried

again  but the same issue arised. So I tried starting in the normal mode. But it restarted and gave me

the same screen where I needed to select safe or normal mode. I have tried many times but I am

unable to start the system. The software I downloaded is a reliable one. I downloaded it from

www.download.com. Please help me. I have very important files on my system. Please tell me what to

do. Also, I reformatted the system just a couple of days back and I checked for viruses and spyware

today morning.

Thanks,
Nalini Reddy

These are my system specifications:

System make : Hewlett packard pavilion
Operating system: Windows Me
RAM  : 256 MB
Hard drive : 40 GB
Processor: Pentium III, 866 Mhz

Please help. This does not SOUND good at all. You do not have these important files backed up? I would suggest GETTING them off first (with a Linux Live CD if nothing else to a pen drive or across a network. How many megabytes of fiules are involved?

You could try deleting Windows and reinstalling or just reinstall over the top if neccessary.

I won't go into the need for backing up files on something other that your primary hard drive right now. But this is a great example of why dividing your drive into TWO partitions can be very helpful, storing your data files on the other partition from your operating system.  Believe it or not, I currently have the exact same problem.

Anyone have any additional advice?Azuma,

your issues may not be identical although the problem seems to be. It's not nice to hijack someone else's thread, but did you take the above advice?Sorry, I didn't think of it as stealing a thread but possibly trying to find a common solution to a seemingly similar problem (as opposed to starting a new thread).

As far as the problem itself, I'm exploring possible ways to SALVAGE my un-backed up memory (the school year just got out and the LAST time I backed up was at Christmas), for those files are my primary concern.  Then, I know I can easily just use the Restore CD to reset windows.  As above:

I would suggest getting them off first (with a Linux Live CD if nothing else) to a pen drive or across a network. You could also slave that hard drive into a working computer with a CDRW to back them up. How many megabytes of files are involved?

Well.... since we're talking semi-essential files, probably about 500mb - 1gb.  I feel like about my last half year's worth of work is on the verge of being lost.

Right about now, I'm feeling very foolish in only backing up my computer every six months.

I'm thinking about slaving the hard drive into a working computer, but that could get ugly.

Thanks for your advice.A Linux Live CD is free and a pen drive is cheap. You could easily send across a wirless network to another machine as well...... Not ugly and very safe.  good idea... Any advice as to where to find that?  I'll look into that first thing on Tuesday; until then, I'm just going to try not to think about it too much.

Again, thanks for the help and sorry about the thread taking-over thing (to both GX1_Man and nalinix)What are the specifics on the machine - CPU and RAM?Well... I'll try my best (you say more is better)(the computer is about 5 years old now)

eMachines T1905
Windows ME
128mb SyncRam
30gb harddrive (only about 10gb are being used)
MSN 56K Modem
8x CD-RW

(I'm planning on getting a laptop later this summer)
Have someone download Knoppix and then burn it as an ISO with Nero, etc. to a CD. (Any one with a CDRW should know what an ISO is.) Boot with the CD in the drive of your machine.

Solve : lsass.exe - System Error?

Answer»

Hi

I'm running a pretty OLD virus-riddled PC with XP, and it works fine but this morning this message comes up whenever I turn it on.

I'm the only user on the PC, and its not on a network or on the internet.

I'm pretty clueless, although I know its something to do with the login/registery.

Thanks! Joseph-J ........  WELL ,based on your comment re the viruses ........ I think that entry may well be a off shoot of the sasser virus.
I would do the following .
Turn off your system restore.
Reboot into safe mode
Run you anti virus scanner and see what it turns up .
Has this machine ever been on line ?

dl65  Do you have a real XP CD to format and reinstall to get a working system? Quote

Has this machine ever been on line ?

dl65

YEAH, ages ago. It had some viruses but seemed to be running ok, if a little unstable. I did some research and apparently isass is a sasser offshoot, but lsass is supposed to be there.

And no, I don't have the XP CD any more.

I dunno. Maybe I should just buy a new computer!

Cheers for your help ANYWAY guys. Quote

That seems rather extreme when an XP CD could get everything back to normal. What are the specifics about the machine? DO you have a valid COA stickered to the machine?

Solve : my laptop has gone crazy?

Answer»

I looked through the forums and couldn't find anything that fit my problems, so I'm making a new post.  If I missed something, please let me know.

I have an HP Pavillion zt1260 laptop.  It's about four years old, I recently got a new harddrive installed (60 gig, instead of the old 30, which was full), a wireless card (for the PC/MCI slot), and a new battery (not OEM).  I RUN Windows XP, and USE Firefox and Open Office.

Problem 1: Whenever I shut the lid of my laptop it automatically shuts off.  It could be in the middle of something, it could be already shutting down, it could be booting up, it doesn't matter.  I have it set to not do anything when I close it, but some how that command has been overridden.

Problem 2: Whenever I start up my computer, I get a message that "OneTouch Driver has Finished Installation, Would I like to Restart My computer?"  OneTouch is one of the original HP programs on my computer.  I reinstalled it when I got a new harddrive, and ever since then I've gotten this message.  CLICKING "OK" and rebooting doesn't make it go away.

Problem 3: The other day, Firefox spontaneously got rid of all of my bookmarks.  I went on the FAQ/Help page, and did everything that they said to do to get them back, and they seem to be no where to be found, so I'm wondering if it's an XP problem and not a Firefox problem.

Any thoughts?  Help and/or possible causes for these things would be greatly APPRECIATED.

Thank you!!Is your XP and OEM form MS or one that comes with your laptop?

MacPCI'm not sure what you mean.  I used the disks that came with my computer to reinstall Windows, does that ANSWER your question? He was asking if they included a Windows XP CD or a system restore HP product. Big difference.Oh, thank you for the translation.    I have both, actually.  I have a WinXP installation disk and a couple of outdated HP restore disks.

Solve : WMI has encounted an error...?

Answer»

...and needs to close. This has been popping up for a while, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I've already downloaded this WMIdiag SCRIPT, but it hasn't really HELPED much. Any ideas on how to fix this, or at least what is it... :-?WMIDiag is generally used by administrators to check on the state of WMI on a computer. Probably would not be much help for this problem. Google found this link that may be HELPFUL. Seems this can be as simple as repairing your OS, running SFC,  a problem with NORTON, or setting the WMI service to manual.

Fix WMI

Good LUCK.  8-)I changed the WMI service to manual. Seemed like the easiest solution. Now I just have to wait and see if it pops up again. I was looking at this one, but it seemed a little over the top to be trying right now... :-/ Anyway, thanks for the help.

Solve : Windows Crashed, Now Screwed?

Answer»

Ok, I'm using Windows XP 64-bit and it recently crashed, and now all my executables files have become .LNK files and I can't open anything.  All the desktop shortcuts and start menu links have become this except (strangely enough) the Firefox link that's pinned at the top of the start menu list.  Even all other links (program files/firefox/firefox.exe, desktop link and quick launch link) doesn't work.  When I try to run any applications, windows does not recognize these .LNK files and I get the "Windows cannot open this file" dialog with the 2 options of using web service or choose from list.  Also, using explorer and going to the direct location of the .exe file and trying to run it doesn't work either, Windows doesn't recognize .exe and get the "Windows cannot..." dialog also.  What gives?

I also tried to open the registry but I can't even do that.  I go to start->run and typed "regedit" and  I get that same dialog that Windows cannot open regedit.exe.

Is there anyway I can fix this?  Thanks for any help.R0c4.......   Have you tried to boot up in safe mode ?  If you can run your AV and your trojan scanner ......... that could be the cause .

A shortcut file is a pointer to an .EXE file somewhere on your system. When you click on the shortcut it's like clicking on the .EXE file and the associated program should start and run. Sometimes .LNK files will stop working. This can be because the underlying .EXE association has been broken by something (often by some form of anti-malware program improperly changing the registry) or the association in the registry can be come corrupted. See the FAQs for the .EXE problem. The other problem generally asserts itself when all shortcuts seem to open the same program. You may be able to fix this by opening the registry editor and looking in the key entry [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk] where you might see ="lnk_auto_file". If you see that, change the value to ="lnkfile" and all should work again after a system restart. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if SOMEONE sends you a file with this extension.

dl65  Thanks for the reply.  My first reaction was to run my anti-virus, but the problem was, I couldn't run any PROGRAMS.  I couldn't even open my registry or command prompt.  The only things I could use was Firefox, explorer, and notepad/wordpad really.

ANYWAYS after browsing the web trying to find possible fixes, I came across this site:
http://filext.com/info/showthread.php?t=12

This pretty much solved my problem.

By opening a Windows Explorer, then going to Tools->Folder Options
Then to the File TYPES tab and clicking on the New button
And ADDED the EXE file extention with an associated file type of Applications

This then allowed me to run my applications again.  The .LNK was also solved this way by adding the LNK file extention with an associated file type of Shortcuts.

So after doing this and booted up my F-Secure Ad-Monitor, it detected many registry deletions, and since it keeps a backup, the deletions were undone and everything seems to working normally now.

Thanks anyways, I guess I didn't needed to make this topic after all, but I was somewhat panicking earlier. Thanks for posting back anyway. It may help others!  I experienced something similar and had to reformat to solve the problem.

Also is it POSSIBLE to set it up so that it will send a response (with file) when I am offline?  :-?

I need it to work 24 hours a day - so do I need to leave my laptop on continually?

I'm so confused - someone please help.

Many thanks

LesleyYou must be USING Outlook with an Exchange Server email account to do this.  Are you?  Open Outlook's Help, enter auto respond in the Index search box, and then go to the link in the search results for "Automatically reply to INCOMING messages while out of the office" to get some info on this.

Trust this helps you

dl65  Scary stuff there!

What do you suggest for him, Rob and dl65?MacPC ...... I went back and read some of your previous posts...... and the router in question is the "old Linksys WAP 11" ....so this is what I would suggest as a start .

In order to reduce the amount of support calls they get, manufacturers of wireless kit try to design them to work straight away out of the box with the minimum of configuration (if not no configuration at all). However in order to do this, they are by default configured to run insecurely, allowing anyone to connect to them. This means that as soon as you switch the wireless router/ap/gateway on, it is insecure.
The first step, is to connect just one pc to it using the supplied ethernet cable. Make sure the pc is running a firewall such as the default firewall that comes with windows XP, or a 3rd party firewall such as ZoneAlarm. Do not connect the wireless router to the rest of the network until you have secured it.

Open up a browser on the pc, and enter in the URL of the router (usually http://192.168.1.1) as specified in the router's quick start guide. You should be promted to enter a username and password to access the router, and the quick start guide should tell you what these are (often they are "admin" and "admin" - not very secure huh?).

Changing the default password
The first step is to change the default password to access your wireless router. To find the page for changing the default password you may need to use the user manual, as each manufacturer puts the page in different places
Dlink puts it on the "tools" page
Linksys puts it under the "administration" page
Netgear puts it on the "Maintenance" page
Now you have FOUND the page, enter a new password. Don't use something short, it should be at least 8 characters long. Once changed, click on the "Save Settings" or "Update" button to save the new password. You will then probably be asked to log in again using the new password.
Changing the wireless network name
The wireless network name (also known as SSID) is the name your wireless router broadcasts to identify itself from the other wireless networks in your neighbourhood. Usually the default is just "default" or "linksys" - something simple. On the wireless settings page, you should find a field where you can change this.
It is often popular to use your lastname or house name, but this is a bad idea, as it clearly identifies who owns the network, which will make guessing your passwords easier (especially if you have used the name of one of your pets). Choose a SSID (network name) of something like "PRIVATE2006" or "PRIVATE4G7K" - something that makes it clear this is NOT a public network, but that doesn't identify you easily. On the same page where you specified the SSID name.

Turning on encryption
The final setting you need to change is to turn on wireless encryption. This stops anyone from snooping on your wireless network as you read emails or surf the net. Most newer hardware supports newer encryption schemes called WPA and WPA2, and if these options are available, then you should choose them. Both your wireless router and pc/laptop's wireless card will need to support WPA in order for this to work. You need to enter a password that the encryption will use, this needs to be different from the password used to login to the wireless router, and needs to be quite long.
The easiest long password is actually a pass-phrase and should be at least 20 characters long such as "I really like my new blue front door" . Once the WPA encryption is turned on and the password enter, save the changes, and your wireless network is now secure.

Final Thoughts
Now your wireless router is secure, you can connect it to the rest of your network, or to your broadband/cable connection. If you are not very good a remembering passwords, rather than have to reset your wireless router every time you forget the password, write down the admin password and WPA password onto a post-it note and stick it to the underside of the router, or store it in a safe place.

Hope this helps you .
PS ....Rob , may have some further ideas .......

dl65  Hi,

Thank you everyone for your replies. I did use tracert on my PC to track down 60.9.0.0 and it also traced back to Australia, but it hasn't bring me to Beijing yet. Whoa, it must be an international conspriracy to screw up my network!

dl65, yea, I tried to do all you suggested, but the problem is that my WAP11 is a very old one, the one Linksys came out like 4-5 years ago. It still have a USB connection in order to config it. I use the config util that comes WIT the WAP11, for some reason, after I save all my changes such as SSI and WEP, the NEXT time I use use it, none of my changes were saved. After hours on the phone with Linksys, the sulosion they suggested is to buy a new AP. I remember when I bought the WAP11 years ago, I was able to set the SSID and WEP. Don't know why it won't do it now.  :-? Perhaps there is something wrong with the WAP11? Since my wireless is totally unsecured, everytime I turn around, there is a new MAC on my nework, I block the MAC address on the router but they just keep coming with a new MAC, just how many wireless NIC are there around me? Could there be some sort of softwares that can fake a MAC?

O well, I give up.

Thanks again for all your time.

Solve : Upgrade from ME to XP?

Answer»

Hi,

I bought this used PC. It has WIN ME on it. I want to upgrade it to Win XP or Win 2K, but I don't want to format the HD because the HD has a lot of good programs on it. Is there a way I can install the new OS without deleting any of the programs?

Thanks in advance.

MacPCYou cannot expect programs that are installed on one O/S to work when you upgrade/downgrade to another.  Do you have an upgrade version of Win XP/Win 2k?  If so, check the documentation as to what will be lost on upgrade.

If the programs you refer to are setup files, you can simply run them again, following upgrade.  To obtain the best RESULTS with Win 2k or Win XP, however, you should format your hard drive as NTFS, rather than FAT.  That of course means losing everything on the hard drive (that you haven't backed up).

If I were in your position incidentally, I would go up to Win XP (if the hardware was up to it) or down to Win 98SE.  I would not STAY with Win ME.Those programs may not work on XP either.

1. I right-click on the desktop; select properties. But no access.
2. I go to the Start MENU; select Display. But no access.

I keep getting this message, “Your system administrator disabled the Display control panel.” How do I enable the Display control panel?Using a Restore Point from prior to the tweaks comes to mind as a possible solution.jamesmag2325.......  This should fix things up ........ [highlight]But REMEMBER to backup the registry before you start just in case you do something wrong .[/highlight]
Click on START, RUN and type REGEDIT, press OK. This opens the Registry Editor. Be careful not to change anything!!!!

Look for HKEY_CURRENT_USER - click on + to expand it.

Click on - Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System.

Then, under System, look for the file called NoDispCPL - this means it's the settings for displaying the Control Panel.

Highlight NoDispCPL and double click - a box will appear called "Edit DWORD value"

In the box called Value Data, it will have the number "1" - change this to zero "0".

DL65

HI, dl65.

I did what you suggested and it works. Well...sort of. I can now access the Display control panel but the drop-down options are all blank.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.
jamesmag2325..... Hummmmm ....What operating system are you using ?   XP ? ....... Home or Pro ?
Is it possible to undo the tweaks you did which caused this issue ?

dl65  The question remains, what exacctly WERE the tweaks that you did and how (and why)?

My SECOND problem is my WEB pages text SIZE is rely small

I noticed it changed after I got a msg from a friend on msn when I was don talking to him

I doubt partitioning and formatting have anything to do with it. If it is the primary XP drive and you are ACCESSING it a lot it will get warmer.

In regards to # 2, try holding down Ctl and rolling the mouse wheel.

Solve : you get a 12o gig hard drive?

Answer»

how do you get a 120 gig hard drive two work with windows 98.Specific on the machine may be helpful. YOu may have a BIOS limitation or the standard 32 gig limitation with FAT32 unless you know how to overcome it.im pretty sure u cant do it, i tried formatting a 160 gig hd with win98 and it just wouldnt work  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]The MAXIMUM copacity that the Windows 98 will understand is 100 G.B. MAX and that is it.. that is why it is higher than 100 g.b. try to install XP or some other operating system. and try it.. I had the same problem.. Good LUCK...A couple questions. Is this an internal or external drive? If internal, is it to be the only hard drive?
I just added an 80gb external drive to my 98 unit. Bios limitations prevented me from using an internal drive. USB drivers were necessary, but it does work WITHOUT the newer version of USB. The FDISK utility that comes with 98 couldn't deal with the 80gb drive, under-reported the size. A newer version of FDISK is available. Don't have the link handy but do have the file if you need it. Instead of using straight DOS mode to partition it, used the FDISK utility in a DOS window. WORKED well.
If the drive is an internal drive, your BIOS probably won't allow it. You'll be able to tell if your BIOS reports the size correctly. Mine didn't. If it's an external, you might be able to use it, even if windows has trouble with the size. You'd need to partition it into smaller sections, say 3 40gb partitions. Only way you can tell is if the new FDISK utility reports the right size when used in a DOS window.
Hope this helps.

Solve : Everything has become Super-Sized!!?

Answer»

Hello,

Had the problem of only 2 options (settings) for display colors and that was 2 (Black and White) or 16. This was due to the fact that I INSTALLED Win 98 on my IBM thinkpad that used to be XP. I went from standard PCI Graphics to Super VGA drivers. I went from Laptop Display Panel (800x600) to I'm not quite SURE. I restarted the computer and it went from bad (grainy and applications asking me to change the RESOLUTION) to worse (grainier and icons supersized). Nothing can be seen for me to try to reverse the damage I've done so I'm not able to, for instance, hit the start button to GO to display via control panel cause I can't "see" the start button.  I can't go to the desktop and right click and go to properties either.   Luckily I have a desktop but I've searched online for an answer and can't find one! Thank you in advance for your assistance everyone.Something similar has happended to me every once in a while. When I boot windows I get a message of incompatibility with hardware or something alike, everything becomes 16-color and 640X480. Try setting the colors (not the resolution) higher, see if it makes a difference. I'm not sure though. You need to have the correct VIDEO drivers for the operating system being used. Some newer machines do not have Win98 drivers. Which ThinkPad is this? What is the 7 digit number on the bottom of the machine - xxxx-xxx?Hello,

I turned it over - It's an i series 1300 and the only thing I seen that is "7" is Type  117-5XU.  Thank you for your interest and Thank you for your help. That's probably 6 of the 7 digits we need. The format of the digits is xxxx-xxx. It is a machine type and model number. That machine should do well with 98, we just have to find the number to get the drivers. If you want to download and run Belarc Advisor (it's free), it will tell you as well. www.belarc.comI looked for the number but didn't see anything in that format either.  As for downloading -        I'm unable to since the toolbar is nowhere to be found - the hugeness of all that is on the top of the screen makes finding anything on the bottom impossible - even if the screen was readable.  It truely is grainy! How about booting in safe mode - F8 several times when you restart the machine BEFORE the Windows logo.

Belarc can be downloaded onto a floppy and installed from there.

UPDATE!

Here is your drive and a text file that will tell you how to install it:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4WYP53

Obviously, this will have to be burned to a CD and installed in safe mode.  Thanks - Your suggestion was what I needed to do - Thanks so much for including the IBM info - I've been on that site and its way over my head!!Glad you are all fixed up.

Solve : HP printer/scanner/copier?

Answer»

I have an hp psc 750xi.  It will print, but I can't SCAN or copy.  I get an error message "Scanner failure.  Turn power off and on again."  I have done this many times, been to the HP site, the printer is now plugged directly into the wall, the bulb is LIGHTING up, but not staying on.  Help! Is it still under warranty? How old is it?

You could try uninstalling the software, rebooting without the printer plugged in and reinstalling the software. Then restart with the printer plugged in to FINALIZE the installation. That is the HP way. Thanks for ANSWERING!  I bought it at a garage sale - I know, you get what you pay for - and of course they assured me it worked fine, they were upgrading!  I have tried what you suggested, as HP recommended.  I never did find an explanation for my error message though.I hope you didn't pay too much.  No, at $15, it's still a good deal just for the printer and 3 cartridges!  But I'd really like to find out why the scanner won't WORK!Ah, that is, no doubt, the mystery that landed it in the garage sale.   Rats!  I was afraid you would say that!  Ah well, thanks for your interest. No problem. I agree that an HP printer and 3 cartridges is a bargain for $15, though.

Solve : Partition and start up issues!!!?

Answer»

Hey there, Ive got a pretty big problem on my hands and i was hopeing that you guys could help.

Basically, i have a dell with windows xp home edition (yeah i know..its home...) and i wanted to try ubuntu linux (version 4.10) on my computer.  So I reinstalled windows and saved some disk space to turn into what would be my linux partition.  Everything worked out fine untill I started to run into space issues on my windows partition so i figured it was best to delete the other partition.
I used windows disk manager and deleted the linux partition, however, ounce I restarted my computer and "grub" (the operating system selection thing that linux has) kept on looking for Linux and then I had no access to anything at all.  I should have realized that Linux was set as my primary operating system and windows was not.
So after talking to a friend i thought that a way to delete "grub" would be to reinstall windows over that partition.  It deleted grub and i was brought to the windows operating system selection.  It gave me two options: both of which were windows xp.  The first one was the new install, and the second one would begin to load and then crashed (even in safe mode after multiple trys).
As bad as this is... I had important work to get done, so ounce again I installed linux over the new windows partition (i couldnt get my internet set up on the new windows partition so i just gave in) and grub was back up.  Grub gives me the option to select windows, but ounce i do i am brought to the windows operating system selection.  The first one obviously cant find the file it needs to start up because I deleted it and the second windows xp option crashes just like it did before.

So, not only do I have a problem, but i repeated it again with windows.  On the (FORMER) new windows instalation i was able to access my c drive.  What i want to do is not only access it but boot to it.  It should be intact.

Please help!  Anyone at all, any ideas or suggestions on where else i can take this problem if no one here can help.

Thank you (so so so much) for reading such a long problem report and ounce again, i am dieing for any help i can get!

my email is: [email protected]
Thanks again!,
~harryIf you have your data backed up, and it sounds like you are not afraid to reinstall, then boot with the Windows CD in there and delete ALL partitions, make new ones however you like and then install to the first one. That will get Windows back up. If you save a place for Linux, it can be installed next or at a later date.

When you install Windows it OVERWRITES the MBR because it is a bad neighbor. That is why it should ALWAYS be installed first for a stable system. Quote

Try and boot then to the Windows Repair console from your CD when it BOOTS and then type in :

Solve : Screen turns brown?

Answer»

Hi there
I was wondering if you could help me.
I have an Athlon 1800XP, ECS K7S5A Motherboard, 768MB RAM, Microsoft Windows XP PROFESSIONAL with Service Pack 2, RADEON 9600 Pro 256MB, Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 and as far as I know my system is virus-free and all programmes and applications are installed correctly.Well...up until, that is, I installed Halo the game for PC.
After trying to start the game after installation I was prompltly informed that my Hardware Accelleration seemed to be deactivated and the game could not run and that I should try running DxDiag.I did so and discovered that the Hardware Accelleration WAS activated. After closing the game I saw that my desktop had been re-arranged, too.
After trying de and re-installing the game I encountered the same problem. Then I found that ALL games I now try to play have only 1 colour.Brown. :-?
Can anyone please give me a nudge in the right direction?Could it have anything to do with Service Pack 2, perhaps?I've looked all over the shop and can't find anything wrong.
thanks

Solve : Please help with my ethernet!?

Answer»

Hi!

I recently bought a laptop.
I have been trying to hook it up to the internet, but when I try to hook my DESKTOP modem up to the ethernet ports instead of the USB PORT, I cant get onto the internet.
When I check the internet connection, it says that a network cable is unplugged. I have tried another of the same modem, I have tried different ethernet cables, and even tried hooking it directly to my laptop. I get the same MESSAGE on both computers, that a network cable is unplugged. Does anybody know why this is happening, and how I can fix it? Thanks. Any help will be appreciated.Sounds like the network adapter on your laptop may not work.  PCMCIA network cards are quite cheap...But the ethernet wont work on my desktop either. When the people from comcast first hooked it up, they couldnt get the ethernet to work so they just hooked the modem up to the USB port. Now that I have a laptop, I NEED it hooked up to the ethernet port, so that I can have internet on my laptop as WELL. Right now I am working off of the USB port, but then I cant share a network with my laptop. So this is a known problem from the time Comcast STARTED? I would contact them to rectify it if the no ethernet problem is on their end.

Solve : Old PC Will Not Start Up?

Answer»

I have this older PC that I can’t get to start up. When I turn it on it brings up a screen that says:
Quote

We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Las Know Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power of RESET button was pressed, or if you aren’t sure what caused the problem, choose Stat Windows Normally.

{{Then displays these options}}

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Know Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows Starts: 30

If I choose one of the last 2 options it then goes to the Windows XP boot screen, then after a couple of seconds it looks to be working then a blue screen flashes saying something. I couldn’t tell what it said caused it was only there for a split second. I got my webcam and filmed it, went back and looked at the frames. This is the best frame I got.

When I tried the “Safe Mode” options these (what I guess are commands) start appearing then stop, then it brings me back to where I started. Sometimes it shows the blue screen, other times it doesn’t.

It’s a Gateway, with an Intel motherboard and has XP on it. Don’t know any other specs.

My dad thinks we got a virus on there when we last had it hooked up. Not really sure.

Can you HELP?

Solve : Does CCleaner slow down your PC??

Answer»

An interesting read. Dilbert does this apply to you?

HTTP://poptech.blogspot.com/2005/10/ccleaner-cripples-application-load.htmlI think the guy has made a strong case for using ccleaner.

XP Prefetching Facts
The Prefetch folder is auto cleaned after 128 entries have been reached.

What CCleaner does
CCleaner deletes any Prefetch file older then two WEEKS BASED on the .PF file's last access date.

Reading between the lines it sounds like he has an axe to grind.

W2K has no NEED of prefetch like the bloated XP.

Solve : Bacth file help?

Answer»

Hey guys, I've been working on a backup batch file to backup data on some machines and now I would like to add some command line switches for my batch file.

Couple of questions:

1) Is there anything you can do about the order of how they add the switches?

C:> EXAMPLE.bat -nodocs -nofavs

c:> example.bat -nofavs -nodocs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
example.bat --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if %1== nodocs set docs=0
if %2== nofavs set favs=0
.
.
.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is just a crude example. but you see my point. Obviously this would
work for the first example, but would FAIL on the second because the switches
are in the wrong order. Is there a way you can GET AROUND this? I would hate
to tell the other guys that you HAVE to enter the switches in this exact
order.

2) How do you avoid if the user doesn't supply any switches?

c:> example.bat

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if %1== nodocs set docs=0
if %2== nofavs set favs=0
.
.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried using "if %1== goto noswitch" and "if %1=="" goto noswitch" but both came back with the unexpected return error. This is going to give me an error and terminate because %1 is not defined.

I would also like to add some other switches like a -help so they can see what switches are avaliable. Thanks guys.

Many scripting languages allow you to use both Named and Unnamed arguments. Batch language is not one of them as all command line parameters to a batch file are positional.

You best bet would be to check %1 for all possible switches, then do the same for %2, and so on.

Small error:

example.bat -nodocs -nofavs

if %1== nodocs set docs=0
if %2== nofavs set favs=0

You need to include the - indicator when checking the value of the parameters:

if %1== -nodocs set docs=0
if %2== -nofavs set favs=0

 8-)

I hope someone can HELP me with this issue. I have just had my primary HD replaced. I had backed up the old primary hard drive to the new replacement drive using Ghost 10, making sure that I back up the Master Boot Record on the C drive.

The old drive had 2 partitions on it (drives C and E). I also have a second hard drive (drive F) as a slave. However now that that disks have both been installed, my PC is trying to boot from the slave drive.

Using Norton's disk doctor, I can see that the slave drive is now listed as the C drive and the drives on the new disk are called E and F.

The jumpers are set correctly on both drives and they are correctly identified as primary and slave in IDE detection process. I have tried disabling the slave drive in the BIOS which results in the error "NTLDR is Missing". When I disconnect the power from the slave drive I get the error that a boot disk must be inserted as the OS cannot be found.

I tried opening the XP recovery console but only the partitions on the slave drive appeared to boot from (although I havent tried disabling the slave drive and using the recovery console).

When I check in Norton Disk Doctor, everything is fine with both drives (ie not errors) and I can see the boot partition on the primary drive. I just cant get to it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am not sure what you mean by that? Do you mean that you cant replace a drive under XP or that you cant change the HD drive letters under XP (both of which I am sure you can do, although it is a bit more tricky to change the drive letters as they are assigned in the boot process by the BIOS).

If I have Ghosted the contents of the "old" drive to the new drive and set the new drive as the Master, I didnt think that XP would know that the old drive had been removed.
if i had the time id google for a utility boot cd for you but i dont ,, your going to have to set the xp partiton as the active partition. my xp install is loaded to F: drive and it boots fine and its the only OS installed on the boxI am going to try disconnecting the slave drive and using the Windows XP repair function. I was thinking about using the bootcfg command to locate any bootable OS installations.

If that doesnt work (perhaps Ghost didnt do what it was supposed to), I will try doing an XP installation over the existing installation.it just needs to be the active partition thats allI may have made a BAD situation worse last night. I couldnt find any active partition to boot from and using Norton Disk Doctor, found partition errors on the drive.

I ended up formatting the drive but I am still getting partition errors (there were 2 partitions of equal SIZE on the drive and now I only see one partition that takes up half the drive). When I try to reinstall XP, the process completes but will not boot.

Now I just want to get my PC back up and running. All I can think to do is to try and reinstall XP so that i can open the recovery console and delete the existing partition and let windows recreate them.

Any thoughts? I think I am going insane.Back up any important data left on there, then delete ALL partitions and start over with a fresh install that includeds formatting the drive.   Quote

Thanks. Not to doubt your word, but can I clarify a couple of things (once i leave work for the day, I dont have any web access so I cant come back and ask more questions till tomorrow):

1. Do I need to create a new Master Boot Record or will the XP installation do this for me?
2. Will the removal of the partition remove the errors I am experiencing (Norton says that they are partition errors only - the disk surface etc is OK)?
3. Is it possible that I could make the drive unusable if these problems persist?

Thanks - yours in paranoia.1. A new MBR will be created.

2. Hopefully all will be OK. You will know when you reinstall and you can run scandisk afterward. You can also test the hard drive with free diagnostic software from the manufacturer's website.

3.  If the hardware is bad, you cannot make it worse.

Solve : Start A Program with its command-line parameters?

Answer»

Hey guys,

Joined the forums just so I can ask this noobie question. As the subject states, I want to create a batch file that starts an App with its command-line parameters  in place. Please note that i am not refering to a program shortcut.
Here is an EXAMPLE of the App I wanna launch with its PARAMATERS ("I:\demo\SushiDX.exe" -debug) How do I turn this into a bat file.  If I make this a shortcut, it works fine, but when its  in batch format i get errors.

THanks guysSome programs need to be logged in to the directory where the excutable is. You didn't mention which version of Windows you have, but this should run in all of them:

Code: [Select]I:
cd \demo
SushiDX.exe -debug

Shortcuts have the "Start in" parameter which can point to the executable directory. In batch language, you have to duplicate the result using a different technique.

Hope this helps. 8-)Hey Sidewinder,

Let me clear up any confusion, first off my OS is XP SP2, and My "I" drive is a HDD. The following is the full path to the program Code: [Select]I:\ATI Demos\DoubleCross\SushiDX.exe what code Do I type for the above to work?

ThanksI'd still use the same method:

Code: [Select]I:
cd "\ATI Demos\DoubleCross"
SushiDX.exe -debug
Not sure if you still want the -debug SWITCH.

There are other ways to do this but:

If I make this a shortcut, it works fine, but when its  in batch format i get errors.
we don't what errors, so the best solution if one that can be done on any machine. 8-)Thanks for the quick reply.

Okay I think I understand now. The "CD" in your code stands for "CHANGE directory" right? I'll give it a try and let you know if it works

Solve : i need a command to use in a batch file?

Answer»

is there any command using which i can open and close my cd-rom with a batch fileI'm not aware of any batch command to open or close the CD. VBScript can eject the CD but as far as closing the CD you may be SOL.

EjectCD:

Code: [Select]Set WMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.ocx")
Set colCDROMS = WMP.CDROMCollection

If colCDROMS.Count > -1 Then
      For i = 0 to colCDROMS.Count - 1
            colCDROMS.Item(i).Eject
      Next
End If

Note: If WMPlayer.ocx doesn't work for you, try WMPlayer.ocx.7

If you do find a way of closing the CD, PLEASE post it. It would be INTERESTING to see how it's done.

8-)Would now be a helpful time to POINT out that you can do this with Linux?

(Possibly therefore it could be done under Windows using Cygwin, but installing that would be overkill just to find a way to issue a "tray close" commend!)There is a utility that may be helpful. I have no experience with Wizmo but you may find it suits your purpose.

Good luck.  8-)

Let us KNOW how Wizmo works out.Theres ALWAYS AUTOIT which can convert scripts to .exe files and it has controls to open and close a cd-rom driveOpen up notepad then enter the following:

Code: [Select]Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
Set MyComp=objShell.NameSpace(17)
Set CD=MyComp.ParseName("g:\")
Set Context=CD.Verbs
CD.InvokeVerb "E&ject"

'objshell.ShellExecute "g:" ,,,"E&ject"
'eg
'object.ShellExecute(sFile [,vArguments] [,vDirectory] [,vOperation] [,vShow])
Just replace the letter "g:" with the letter assigned to your CD-Rom drive. Save the text file with the extension .vbs. This works for ejecting but if you will have to close the drive manually.

Solve : Wireless trouble.?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an old Linksys WAP11. For some reasons, it won't let me me save the changes via the USB configure utility that comes with the AP. So I don't have any SSID and WEP security. I didn't think much of it until recently I check the DHCP CLIENTS list on my router, it's then that I found out there are few IP and MAC addresses do not BELONG to my network, so I enabled the MAC address FILTERING to block these unwelcomed MAC. But everytime I turn around, there is yet another new MAC on the DHCP clients list. Just how many invaders are out there? What else can I do to prevent these HACKERS?

Solve : Can I duel boot in this situation ????

Answer»

G'Day guys again......Havt got new puter...160gb windows xp 2nd edition loaded
My old puter had 98sp loaded ( Ive stripped it to bare essentials) 40gb
What I want to do is introduce them to each other without loss of data on either drive.............Can I do this and have the option to decide which OP system (or DISK drive) at the start MENU.....( thanks for all your help in the past)..cheersThe best solution in to load the oldest Windows on the first partition of the first physical hard drive. Then load the later version on either a second partition or a second hard drive. That second version will install a boot loader automatically so you can easily choose at boot what operating system to run.

Other solutions are changing this in the BIOS, or physically plugging in ONLY the hard drive you want ACTIVE. These WOULD vcertainly be NOT my first choices.

You may have to reload to get this set up right, but good planning SAVES a LOT of problems later.  Thanks AGAIN Mate I Understand what U said...( Good Planning !!!  )......Then again We ALL WISH we had the gift of Foresight....All Ure help to me in the past  has been MUCH appreciated...Im SURE I'LL have more Qs in the future...... Glad to help. Feel free to post back.

Solve : opening ersatz compressed files?

Answer»

In my new barebones pc, with all the bells and WHISTLES, XP and 1.5 gigs of RAM, etc., I am trying to OPEN about 20 obviously compressed files bearing an .A01 extension.  I have searched diligently and have failed to open these files with .arj or any other "universal" decompression program.  I believe they are scanned photos from some 10-20 years ago, but I have also failed to open them through changing extensions to photo files and other "zip"-like programs.  I have downloaded Stuffit and Alzip, but they have been unsuccessful, too.  Obviously, XP won't open them.  At this point, I have no idea what program created these files, even though some A01 extensions are the 3rd step in creating compressed files with arj.  I don't believe they are that type, yet, they are clearly compressed, according to both Stuffit and Alzip.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

ladlaiTry loading the files into Wordpad - SEE if the first couple of lines give any clues.  I wonder if they are the product of a splitting function... are they about 1.4MB?

Solve : 2 Admin accounts on the same pc?

Answer»

So I have this problem since I first loaded windows.  It seems as if I have 2 admin accounts on the same pc but I can't seem to get rid of one of them.  One of them is titled "Administrator" and the other one is "XChrisX"  It doesn't effect my pc in any way and nothing seems to be slower or anything but it just bugs me that I have two admin accounts and can't get rid of one of them.  When I shutdown my pc and restart it the "Admin" account which is the one I use loads up and not the other one.  However when I log out of that account and not just switch users that account goes away and it not shown in my list of users.  However when I log out of "XChrisX" it stays there in my list of users.  I want to SAY that the "Admin" account I use now is the main account that had loaded up since the begining but I may be mistaken.  What I want to know is how I can get rid of "XChrisX" and just keep using the admin account since it has all of my personal files and everything on it.  I've tried going into "use Account" and changing all of that up and and modifying the account but I can't change anything.  Thanks for the HELP, and hopefully all of that made sense. If XChrisX is under a logged off status and you access Control Panel, User Accounts, and select XChrisX, do you have the option to "Delete the account"? When I go to "Change the account type" Computer Administrator is is the option selected and next to it is "Limited" but it is gray and won't allow me to select that option.  Just now I logged out of "Admin" and it went away, etc.. and logged into XChrisX so I could restart to see which account loaded up on restart and it was "Admin"

See when I go into the modify user accounts and click on the account I would like to modify there is no "delete" option for the "XChrisX" account.  When I log out of "Administrator" and log into "XChrisX" and go into control panel "user accounts" just to see if I could modify the "Admin" account, it doesn't even show up.  When I try to modify "XChrisX" the only options I get are Change name, password, remove password, Change picture, Change Account type, change .NET Passport.  However clicking on "Change Account Type" does nothing.  I get no "Delete Account" option.  Now that I have logged out of "Admin" the account I use, it has dissapeared as an account that I can log into and the only way it will come back is if I restart.  This is just confusing because I have no idea how I ended up with two administrator accounts in the first place

Click Delete the account to delete the user account from the computer. When you delete the account, you are given the option to SAVE the user's files on the computer.

Note: You can not delete the account for a user that is currently logged on to the computer.

What's in bold is what i would like to accomplish but it won't work on my computer as for both admins i am not given that option.I may have to jump ship on you.  Trying to understand the illogical explanation of your situation is getting to be too much of a burden.

My impression is that you have one Admin account, which is named XChrisX.  So, you've either changed the name of the default Admin account, which is named Admin, to XChrisX, or you created XChrisX as an admin account, then DELETED the original Admin account.  You must have at least one admin account; you can have more.  If you only have one, you will not see the option to delete that account.  You say you don't have the delete option; therefore, you apparently only have one admin account, the one named XChrisX.Maybe this will help...(Sorry I tried posting the pics but they didn't show up so here are the links.)

Well according to Windows you cannot make changes to the account in which you are currently logged into.  And apparently only ADMINISTRATORS can make changes to user accounts.  Well when I log out of "Admin" to sign into "XChrisX" to make changes to the other account it misteriously dissapers.

Being logged into "XChrisX"  I am unable to see the account named "Admin" in order to make changes to it.  it dissapeared.  "Admin" vs. "Administrator"?   Which is it?  Please use the exact terms; not doing so leads to confusion. Quote
