Solve : My PC will not recognize my CD R-W Drive? |
Answer» I am running Windows XP Professional, and have had it installed for about 9 month or so. I installed about 6 month ago a Sony CD-RW drive and it worked great until about a WEEK ago. It has disappeared completely. When I open My Computer there is no icon for my drive. If I insert a CD, the light comes on but it doesnt play. When I open the Device menu in System there is a yellow ! on that drive. I tried to uninstall it and re-install through the hardware wizard but to no avail. I tried to use system restore, but that is not working either. I DISABLED Norton Security and still no system restore. Should I maybe reinstall the SP2? Is there a utility that I can install that will help me diagnose my problem or does anyone have any suggestions. I can understand if it quit working when I installed my CD -RW drive, but its been working FINE for months and now all of the sudden its gone. Something must have happened during the night. Could it be a strange virus that Norton did not pickup? When I open the Device menu in System there is a yellow ! on that drive. This suggests to me that perhaps something has occurred to damage the driver... or perhaps you have opted to upgrade the hardware from the windows update site and the driver wasn't compatible ........ I would be doing this ...... shut down your pc , open the case and carefully unplug the 4 pin power supply to that cd drive and unplug the cable which rums from the drive to the mobo ( motherboard ) ........ then reboot the machine .......... after it has fully loaded ...shuti t down again and plug back in the cables you removed ...... Now boot up and watch the lower right corner of your monitor....... you should see the message ...... "New Hardware detected"......... then you should see either a message prompting you to install the driver or it will SAY new hardware SUCCESSFULLY installed ...... Now go to My Computer and see if it shows up ........ and if the exclamation mark is gone . dl65 |

Solve : How to backup e-mail in Outlook Express 6 ???? |
Answer» Does anyone know how to backup e-mail in Outlook Express 6? I have Windows XP Home Edition software. I tried USING some instructions I GX1_Man, The instructions worked very well for me. What problem you had with it?I remember the e-mail folder icons looking corrupted, and getting a message asking what program created them when I tried to open a folder. -jimbob.This may sound dumb, but how do you retrieve your e-mail and address book once you've SAVED them? I saved my Inbox by copying it, and then pasting it to Wordpad. When I opened it, I got the following: C:\Documents and Settings\My computer name\Application Data\Identies\{998h7292-C005-B5FE-BA8E8059F103}\Microsoft\outlook Express\Inbox.dbx. Sorry, I quess I need someone to take me by the hand on this one. -jimbob. |

Solve : file isapnp.sys is corrupted? |
Answer» HELLO , I am using Windows XP Can u help me how to recover or re install a copy of this file. The Message " File isapnp.sys is corrupted " appeard on my screen.Error Message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\DRIVERS\Isapnp.sys" Translation: This is another one of those messages that points directly to the CULPRIT. ISAPNP.SYS is a DEVICE driver WinXP needs to function properly. The message is telling you this file is either missing or damaged. Most WinXP files with a *.SYS extension are Windows device drivers that reside in the C:\windows\System32\dRIVERS FOLDER. This folder is one of the most important in your entire hard drive. If any of these files go AWOL or are damaged, WinXP will report serious errors and you won't be able to get your system started until you restore a functional device driver. Solution: Start the Recovery Console (we've already discussed how to start the WinXP Recovery Console). If the ISAPNP.SYS file is still in your C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS folder, the driver is corrupt. Rename the existing file and copy a new version from your WinXP installation CD. If the file is missing, then all you need to do is copy the file from your WinXP CD to the C:\Windows\System32\dRIVERS folder by typing the expand command: expand [CD drive letter]:\i386\isapnp.sy_ C:\win dows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys. Thanks for the reply, more power..Glad you are fixed up! |

Solve : Printing Landscape When all settings Portrait? |
Answer» Have an issue where only 1 or 2 DOCUMENTS on a clients MACHINE are printing to landscape instead of portrait orientation. Trouble is all the settings are set to PRINT portrait and this only happens to one document all the rest print in portrait orientation. Even more bizzarre is the same email attachment was sent to me and for myself it prints out portrait.(same image, same machine stats) Could something have gone wrong with the registry settings maybe ive double checked all the print settings and preferences ,, page layout in the document etc etc even the outlook printing page layout , its all set to portrait. Any IdeasWhat kind of a document is it? What kind of a printer is causing this problem?MS WORD Document to a networked HP 5100tn printer ,, however i know the printer is not the issue, i m more inclined to a registry setting being the problem and i was just hoping maybe someone knew a quick FIX instead of me just re-imaging the machine. |

Solve : Missing Folder in My Computer Folder? |
Answer» HI, I inadvertently renamed my “MY DOCUMENTS” folder, then did an undo as soon as I realized that I had done so. Previously, when I clicked on the MY COMPUTER icon I would see BOB’S DOCUMENTS listed along with the other FOLDERS and devices. Now, BOB’S DOCUMENTS is not listed. What do I have to do so that the My Documents folder will appear. Thanks for your help. hmmm.... the only thing i can think of, is that somehow u made the folder HIDDEN. thats probably not the problem, but it only takes a second to check. thats about the extent of my knowledge. P.S. if ur not sure how to make hidden files appear, click on "my computer" then at the top of the page SELECT.... TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW(tab)> then scroll down to the "hidden files and folders" section and select "show hidden files and folders". if your folder was hidden, make it visible without having the "show hidden folders" mode on by... right clicking folder> selecting properties>looking at the bottom of the page for "ATTRIBUTES" and checking to se if it was hidden, it will have the "hidden" box checked if it was>simply un check box to make viewable without having "show hidden folders" mode on. |

Solve : Bookmarks disappeared, and Torpark...? |
Answer» HI ! I turned on my computer today, and 3/4 of my bookmarks have disappeared. (I had to GOOGLE you guys! Good thing I remembered the word, "HOPE"!) There is also no scrolling-thingy on the right to move down the bookmarks -- it also has disappeared -- though the ONE for the current page is there :-? How can I get my bookmarks back? How did I do this?! Also, can someone explain to me exactly what Torpark is for in very simple language. My impression is that it is an anonymizer if I want to browse sites anonymously. However, I want to know if it is like an identity that I GO into *when* I want to be anonymous; or whether when I download it my identity is then changed forever to this anonymous status ?? And, if I am registered on a site with my old identity, will I have to go and re-register because I can't log in? I don't understand it. Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me! |

Solve : Where the %#$ is Standby?? |
Answer» I just formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP. I had Win 98 SE on it before. Anyway, STANDBY doesn't show up. Not even if I hold Shift in the shutdown box (on the other XP machine Hibernate switches to Standby when you hold shift). And since I use standby so much, I'd really like to have it back. And yes, my computer supports ACPI (which Windows refused to detect completely). Well, I was not suggesting updating video driversYou didn't, but robpomeroy did. Quote I believe you do not have an AGP slotAnd you believed right; but hey, this is eMachines we're talking about. Quote This is most likely to be caused by a driver problem. And I mean ANY driver.Even Windows XP's own drivers? I haven't installed any drivers myself. I stuck with whatever Windows picked when I installed it. Well, thanks for the help so far! -John Quote Even Windows XP's own drivers?Especially Windows XP's own drivers. Microsoft do not make soundcards, printers, etc... Quote QuoteEven Windows XP's own drivers?Especially Windows XP's own drivers. Microsoft do not make soundcards, printers, etc... But it just happens that all of my hardware is ancient, and I haven't been able to find Windows XP compatible drivers. Can anyone find new (possibly Direct3D compatible) drivers for the Rage IIc AGP? Or my "Crystal SoundFusion" sound card? The last ones I tried made me have to use System Restore. Thanks. -JohnEek. Ancient hardware and XP are not a great combination. I see that ATI no longers provides XP drivers for that graphics card (if it EVER did). Would now be a good time to extol the virtues of Linux? Alternatively, you can try upgrading your computer, or just ditch it and start again. Quote Eek. Ancient hardware and XP are not a great combination. I see that ATI no longers provides XP drivers for that graphics card (if it ever did). Oh well... I guess I'll just have to be Standby-less until I can AFFORD to upgrade stuff... Thanks -JohnOr you can turn to Linux for salvation. |

Solve : Connecting two computers trough an internet cable? |
Answer» Hi there, Yes, you can do this. You need a "crossover cable". Set IP addresses within the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, and assign the same workgroup, e.g. "HOME". File and print sharing should then work. How do I set the ip adresses in the same subnet? Another question, should this work with an non-windows xp computer too? I have a sort of 'machine' that only works as ftp-server. It's a sort of hard-drive with an ethernet connection, but there isn't software to install on your computer, how do I connect this one?Your FTP server machine, do you know what its IP address is? Can you change that IP address? I'll answer your other questions once you've replied. Quote Your FTP server machine, do you know what its IP address is? Can you change that IP address? I'll answer your other questions once you've replied. Well NORMALY his IP is: 192.168.0.256. But I think that is the IP-adress if i'm behind a router. But if I only will put a cable between the "machine" and the "computer" I don't see the "machine DRIVE" on my computer, so that's my problem. I can change the IP of the machine, but how do I make that I see the HD (of my machine) on my computerscreen Quote Well normaly his IP is: 192.168.0.256.That can't be right. 255 is the maximum. Whatever, just to be sure this works, change the IP address of your FTP machine to 192.168.1.255. Then change the IP address of your computer to 192.168.1.1. Connect a crossover cable between the two. Then, from your computer, do "ftp 192.168.1.255". It should work. In answer to your earlier question, yes any DEVICE that complies with the TCP/IP PROTOCOL can sit on the same network as your XP machine. Quote QuoteWell normaly his IP is: 192.168.0.256.That can't be right. 255 is the maximum. typo, its 192.168.0.156 Quote Then change the IP address of your computer to 192.168.1.1. Connect a crossover cable between the two. Then, from your computer, do "ftp 192.168.1.255". It should work. How do I change my computer IP? I'm not sure, but could it work without changing my computer ip? Because I only need the ip of my "machine"Yes, you will have to change the IP address of your computer. Have look at my half-finished FAQ re networking. That will help your understanding of this point, and also point you to the correct settings. |

Solve : XP Networking Problem? |
Answer» Hi,
This needs to be done on both computers, once done you it should work. If not re-run the the Home Network Setup Wizard, then it should work.
Okay tc_pole, I added the new Protocol you suggsted. After fiddling around with the Network Wizard for a while, I finally got both to say "connected; HP2 (direct connection to internet) & HP1 (sharing internet connection). I can now share files between the PC's, Thanks! Now the only remaining problem is my internet connection. I still cannot view websites on HP1. The LED's flicker when I hit enter on a URL (the request is sent), but after that, nothing. --Joseph SalinasYou do not need IPX/SPX in a Windows network environment!!!!! (Yes I KNOW I'm shouting, but folks here need to know this - this is not the first time I have seen this incorrect advice given. ) If you're having networking problems, the answer is usually to be found in incorrect TCP/IP settings and incorrect SMB (domain/workgroup) settings. Installing another protocol may seem to fix the problem, but I guarantee it will cause other problems. FYI: IPX/SPX is a networking protocol used by Novell NetWare o/ses. Does anyone here use Novell NetWare? I thought not. Quote You do not need IPX/SPX in a Windows network environment!!!!! Well even if it isnt the right one, it works. Quote Well even if it isnt the right one, it works. It will cause problems. Not a real fix. What kinds of problemsFor future reference: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/trouble.htm Howdy and thanks for the information folks. So far I've had no problems with the IPX/SPX, so i have not removed it. I will, however, keep on top of any errors that occurr. I also will try making a RESTORE point and removing it to see if my initial problems re-introduce themselves. Only thing is my internet connection STILL cannot be shared. Perhaps one of the problems foretold by robpomeroy. --Joseph Salinas www.joeys-snowies.comBeware the disembodied head! I give up. You can't help people who refuse to be helped. Quote Only thing is my internet connection STILL cannot be shared. Perhaps one of the problems foretold by robpomeroy. I really doubt it. My connection works great. Quote Beware the disembodied head! *Pukes on the floor* Sorry bout that. Quote I give up. You can't help people who refuse to be helped. No one is refusing your help, their just not listening to what you have to say:o. Who cares if it is not the "right" protocol, as long as it works. Yes, it might help to do it the right way to keep from having problems in the future, but when that time comes, i guess ill just have to fix it. |

Solve : StandBy is Screwy? |
Answer» I THINK this is a WINDOWS problem, but it may be a hardware problem. If your computer won't enter standby or hibernation, it may require updated drivers. Power management features, especially standby and hibernation, rely on device drivers that support power management in addition to compatible hardware. Incompatible video drivers prevent these features from working. The built-in VGA driver, for example, is a bare-bones driver that doesn't support power management. I THOUGHT I knew how to do this, but everything I can find tells me my drivers are OK. Is there a trick to this? FOr instance, it's a laptop... How do I find the monitor's driver?. Quote I realized that lately I have been using the S-Video output into my TV to watch episodes of "Lost" that I downloaded... Could that have compromised the video settings, which in turn would screw up Standby?... Yes Quote QuoteAnd?I realized that lately I have been using the S-Video output into my TV to watch episodes of "Lost" that I downloaded... Solve : Outlook 2002 .pst file incompatible? |
Answer» My Outlook Express address book became corrupt. I was unable to open Outlook Express at all. The address book was the same one I had in Outlook. I copied the address book from Outlook and then reinstalled windows. I put the same version of Outlook BACK on the computer. I have tried to copy the address book back to Outlook but keep getting the ERROR message that the .pst file is incompatible. What can I do?Did you obliterate all .pst files on your hard DRIVE, when you reinstalled Windows? Are you sure you backed up the correct one? What method are you using to open the .pst file? What error message are you seeing EXACTLY?OK, I have tried to fix my problem but have now encountered a new one. I went to another computer and typed in all my addresses. I have most of them in groups. I typed them into Outlook Express (version 6). I tried copying the .wab file and then copying that file onto the new computer but when I open the address book on the new computer nothing is there. I have tried looking on the internet but so far everything I see says that you cannot move a "group" from one computer to another. Is this true? If not then can you tell me how to do that? That just happened to me yesterday but it corrected it self. After about an hourCorrected itself??? Must have been the hour waiting. corrected itself? I don't understand, everything I read says you cannot move groups. My question is, is this true? As far as correcting itself, I don't understand what you mean.....after an hour you looked again and it was all there? :-? |

I thought Windows just did that by itself, is your ME uptodate? Yes its up to date. I just reloaded it with the manufacturer's system recovery disk. I tinker in the basement, I just have dial up down there. It disconnected earlier and left me having to reload some of the Microsoft Updates. . I'm all over the keeping things updated!
