Solve : Environment variables?

Answer»

Hi everybody.

Firstly, I wanna say that I'm a beginner on Windows XP. So try to use simple sentences please. What is ENVIRONMENT variable? What are its functions? What cases do I need to use it? What does it manage?

Thanks for all.

Here is the Wikipedia page on environment VARIABLES.

If you want to see what environment variables are SET in your pc they can be viewed by following the instructions here.

You don't need to use environment variables at all, they provide ready access to the operating environment for those processes which do.

For example - if you wanted to use the Temp file on a pc but didn't know its location you could access it using the environment variable %temp% which HOPEFULLY is set.

Hope this helps

Solve : Windows Media Player screen resolution 1024??

Answer»

I HOPE I am posting to the right forum, I am having a problem with Windows Media Player 9 and ALSO I have tried installing 10 and the same problem occurs. The problem is:

The videos only play in 800x600 screen resolution. I used to use this screen resolution but for the past few months i have been using 1024 x 768, but i guess media player still thinks i am using 800x600 coz it will only play videos when i am in that resolution, I've looked and looked and I cant FIND any settings that will alow me to correct this. Any ideas?

thanxWhen you launch WMP, does it cause the Windows setting for resolution to change to 800x600?  In other words, after you close WMP, your resolution remains at 800x600 until you change it back to 1024 x 768?

What are the specs on your system, particularly the video part of it (onboard, card, graphics CHIP, amount of video memory, etc.)?  What monitor are you using?

Solve : My PC will not recognize my CD R-W Drive?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP Professional, and have had it installed for about 9 month or so. I installed about 6 month ago a Sony CD-RW drive and it worked great until about a WEEK ago. It has disappeared completely. When I open My Computer there is no icon for my drive. If I insert a CD, the light comes on but it doesnt play. When I open the Device menu in System there is a yellow ! on that drive. I tried to uninstall it and re-install through the hardware wizard but to no avail. I tried to use system restore, but that is not working either. I DISABLED Norton Security and still no system restore. Should I maybe reinstall the SP2? Is there a utility that I can install that will help me diagnose my problem or does anyone have any suggestions. I can understand if it quit working when I installed my CD -RW drive, but its been working FINE for months and now all of the sudden its gone. Something must have happened during the night. Could it be a strange virus that Norton did not pickup?

Thanks for any help you can giveDon't rule out hardware failure.  Can you test that CD-RW drive in another computer?  Is the drive still under warranty? Cloud Chaser....
Quote

When I open the Device menu in System there is a yellow ! on that drive.

This suggests to me that perhaps something has occurred to damage the driver... or perhaps you have opted to upgrade the hardware from the windows update site and the driver wasn't compatible ........
I would be doing this ......
shut down your pc , open the case and carefully unplug the 4 pin power supply to that cd drive and unplug the cable which rums from the drive to the mobo ( motherboard )  ........ then reboot the machine .......... after it has fully loaded ...shuti t down again and plug back in the cables you removed ......
Now boot up and watch the lower right corner of your monitor....... you should see the message ...... "New Hardware detected".........  then you should see either a message prompting you to install the driver or it will SAY new hardware SUCCESSFULLY installed ...... Now go to My Computer and see if it shows up ........ and if the exclamation mark is gone .

Solve : How to backup e-mail in Outlook Express 6 ????

Answer»

Does anyone know how to backup e-mail in Outlook Express 6? I have Windows XP Home Edition software. I tried USING some instructions I
found on the Microsoft.com website, but I'm still having trouble doing a
backup. I'm going to do a full system restore on my PC, so I want to
backup everything before hand. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

jimbob. jimbob338.....Specifically ,what is it in Outlook Express you wish to back up ?

Inbox ? , Outbox ? , Sent Items ? , Drafts ? or the address book ?

dl65  dl65,

I want to back up my Inbox, Sent Items, and my address book.

-jimbob.You've got to use your Google button!

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670GX1_Man,

This site is where I went on Microsoft.com.
The instructions did not work out too well.

-jimbob.jimbob338.....ok , lets see if my instructions are any better .......

open outlook express
RIGHT click on the IN Box and choose ..... properties ....... then the IN Box properties box will come up.......  You will see ..........
This folder CONTAINS ( ) messages.       then below that ....
This folder is stored in the following file.
Then you will see part of the pathway .......

C:\Documents and settings\Your computers name\Application Data\Identities
\{6918FA7B-20C1-487B-B19F-0AD3CB93BEDE}  this is my file (yours may be differant )\Microsoft\Outlook Express \Inbox.dbx
open [highlight]Inbox.dbx [/highlight]and copy it and save it somewhere ....

Then do the same thing with the Sent folder ..... and again once you get to it , you want to save ....... [highlight]Sent Items.dbx[/highlight]

The address book , SEARCH for a file called [highlight]WAB[/highlight] ......... ( save it , thats all your addresses . )

One more thing ...... before you start the above procedure ........ Go to control panel ........ and click on folder options ..... then click the view tab ...... now scroll down until you see [highlight]SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS[/highlight]  put a tick in the circle in front of that statement ...... Now click apply and ok

Now go and save your info.
Dont forget to record your outlook express SET up info ...as you will have to recreate your Email account .

dl65  I first created a folder called Outlook Express. Then I used Tools/Options and clicked on the Maintenance tab and clicked on Store Folder and used the Change Location button to direct it to the Outlook Express folder I had created. Now backing up is a matter of just copying this folder to a safe place.

Address book Wab files can be exported there too.Thank you, dl65 and GX1_Man. I'll give your suggestions a try.

-jimbob. Quote

GX1_Man,

This site is where I went on Microsoft.com.
The instructions did not work out too well.

-jimbob.

The instructions worked very well for me.
What problem you had with it?I remember the e-mail folder icons looking corrupted, and getting a message
asking what program created them when I tried to open a folder.

-jimbob.This may sound dumb, but how do you retrieve your e-mail and address book
once you've SAVED them? I saved my Inbox by copying it, and then pasting it
to Wordpad. When I opened it, I got the following: C:\Documents and Settings\My computer name\Application Data\Identies\{998h7292-C005-B5FE-BA8E8059F103}\Microsoft\outlook Express\Inbox.dbx.

Sorry, I quess I need someone to take me by the hand on this one.

Solve : Error Loading Explorer.exe?

Answer»

Well, it's me again with my infamous WindowsME errors. This time it's: "Error Loading Explorer.exe You Must Reinstall Windows"

I searched this on Google and got a howto from the Microsoft site (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306599). I did everything they told me to do, and I still get the error.

Behind the error message is another that says that the required file MSVCRT.dll was not found.

This error began after the system RESTARTED after uninstalling Flash. Here you can download [highlight]msvcrt.dll[/highlight] free of charge. How can I get it on the system? I can't get windows to load cause of the error. Here's some more INFO on msvcrt.dll: msvcrt - msvcrt.dll - DLL Information.

Sounds to me like you may have to format your hard drive and reinstall Win ME to resolve this.  Err... well I also read it's possible to extract it from a WindowsME cd. But I dont have one so I was wondering is there another metheod to getting the file replaced. One that doesn't INVOLVE wiping my hard drive  :-/If I TAKE the drive from the other computer, put it into this one as a slave, then replace the .dll file, would it work then?

Or does making a hd a slave somehow erase or mess up the OS? Because I was told that's what I did when I made the drive a slave last time I had trouble with it. Or is that person just telling me bs?I FIXED it successfully. Thank you very, very much Soybean for your advice and the link

Solve : file isapnp.sys is corrupted?

Answer» HELLO , I am using Windows XP  Can u help me  how to recover or re install a copy of this file.
The Message " File isapnp.sys is corrupted " appeard on my screen.Error Message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\DRIVERS\Isapnp.sys"

Translation: This is another one of those messages that points directly to the CULPRIT. ISAPNP.SYS is a DEVICE driver WinXP needs to function properly. The message is telling you this file is either missing or damaged.

Most WinXP files with a *.SYS extension are Windows device drivers that reside in the C:\windows\System32\dRIVERS FOLDER. This folder is one of the most important in your entire hard drive. If any of these files go AWOL or are damaged, WinXP will report serious errors and you won't be able to get your system started until you restore a functional device driver.

Solution: Start the Recovery Console (we've already discussed how to start the WinXP Recovery Console). If the ISAPNP.SYS file is still in your C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS folder, the driver is corrupt. Rename the existing file and copy a new version from your WinXP installation CD. If the file is missing, then all you need to do is copy the file from your WinXP CD to the C:\Windows\System32\dRIVERS folder by typing the expand command: expand [CD drive letter]:\i386\isapnp.sy_ C:\win dows\system32\drivers\isapnp.sys.
Thanks for the reply, more power..Glad you are fixed up!

Trouble is all the settings are set to PRINT portrait and this only happens to one document all the rest print in portrait orientation. Even more bizzarre is the same email attachment was sent to me and for myself it prints out portrait.(same image, same machine stats) Could something have gone wrong with the registry settings maybe ive double checked all the print settings and preferences ,, page layout in the document etc etc even the outlook printing page layout , its all set to portrait.  Any IdeasWhat kind of a document is it?  What kind of a printer is causing this problem?MS WORD  Document to a networked HP 5100tn printer ,, however i know the printer is not the issue, i m more inclined to a registry setting being the problem and i was just hoping maybe someone knew a quick FIX instead of me just re-imaging the machine.

also its an ms outlook email attachment,, however i have the same attachment as do other people in the company (all on the same machines with the same settings) hers is the only one that prints in landscape

Solve : Degraded PC not reading D or E drives?

Answer»

Hello all, first posting here so not all sure where to start or post this so please forgive me if this not the correct place.

My PC using ME after STARTUP looks like it is in the safe mode but its not. Folders such as documents and pictures CAN be opened but at greatly REDUCED quality in appearance. There are numerous error messages such as Rundll has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL and Helpctr has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL (in safe mode)  In My Computer the "D" drive is not always displayed and even when it is displayed it does not read disks properly and says they are empty and that includes the restore disk.

Just occasionaly it will read the restore disk but say it is not the correct configuration and so cannot be used on that PC! The "E" drive is never displayed now and I cannot connect to internet as AOL not recognised or displays error messages.

Additonally  when running Scandisk on the C drive it stops and displays message saying it has restarted 10 times but cannot PROCEED as some windows or other programme is writing to the disk.

All of this appeared to start after a visit from my son who downloaded some long overdue MS updates. After the problem commenced I checked out the updates with my laptop and read about one update that itself created errors caused some PCs to crash. I tried to remove any traces of that update but not sure if I was successful or even if this was the problem in the first place as that particular update had been corrected by later ones.

HELP........please.Topic MOVED from FAQ Solution Database to Microsoft Windows board.

FlameSounds like you need to reinstall, unfortunately.  Personally, I would either downgrade to Windows 98SE (the licence for Windows ME entitles you to use an earlier version instead) or upgrade to XP.  In the latter case, you'll need to be sure that (A) your computer can handle it and (B) you don't LOSE any important data.

Whatever you do, best to avoid Win ME like the plague.

Solve : Just had a wireless modem router installed...?

Answer»

And it's having weird effects on my computer.

I'm a novice when it comes to computer's, so bare with me...

It has slowed it down (although not MUCH, I think that is just me) and Mozilla is being unusually slow (is it THAT good of a browser? Everyone seems to think its great!). However the biggest problem is with MSN Messenger. Everything else seems to be running smoothly but when I click the short-cut for MSN, it seems to take a good 5 minutes before the program loads up, which in turn crashes as soon as I try and type ANYTHING in the sign-in box. I've re-installed it again and again, with no luck. I have also run the Troubleshooting thing MSN tells me to do and it says all is well. It could be my Norton Firewall and it could be the new wireless MODEM router which need congifuring somehow.

I would reeeeeeally appreciate your help GUYS. I've given all the DETAIL I can, any other questions I'll try to respond to promptly.

Thanks, I await a response,

Liam

Solve : Window opens outside of screen?

Answer»

I had only one program doing this, but it appears to be HAPPENING to three programs now.

When I run Microsoft MONEY the window appears to open outside of the screen.  I do not know how it could have been dragged there.  OBVIOUSLY, this makes it so that I cannot do anything with the program.  I can maximize the program so that it fills the whole screen, but I don't normally use my programs that way.

What can I do to get the program to open within my screen?

Thank you for your help.

Cheers -

georgeWith Money in windowed mode, right click its button on the task bar, then click move.  You may then move the window using the cursor keys.  You can use a similar process to resize the window.Ahhh, the arrow keys.  I've always WONDERED about that because trying to move with the mouse never worked.  This was the solution.  Thank you very much for the help.

Cheers -

georgeNo problem.  COME back again if there's anything else we can help with!

Solve : Windows Messenger 4.7 ~ annoying?

Answer»

Not LONG ago I downloaded Messenger 7.5 which I use all the time but somehow the OLD Windows Messenger 4.7 intervenes in the BACKGROUND unbeknowns to me, when the new one isn't open.

The old version opens when I am doing something else and I find a conversation going on with people I've never heard of let alone have on my friends' LIST! They are quite rude when they see I'm there ~ who'd blame them!

Can someone please help me to get rid of the old Messenger or at least disable it somehow. I tried to disable it by opening msconfig and taking it out of the startup list but it doesn't seem to work and I can't find it in add/remove programs.

I have a new Dell computer with XP Home SP2.

Thank you for your help
~ JudyYou might try this:

Start>Search "msmsgs.exe" (without quotes)

When the "msmsgs.exe" file comes up, right click on it and select Properties

In the Properties window, select "Version" If it is the Version you are looking for,
delete it.

HELP!Do you have SP2 loaded? What about goping to safe mode (F8 at startup) and doing another system restore from there? What spyware/adware/virus protection is being used regularly? What was going on that required a system restore (or two)?Well I don't know what "goping" is, but I'm sure as *censored* up for it.  Anyone else?

reformat reinstall^ what he said.            Ok To Answer Some Of your questions....

Spyware Protection - Spyware Doctor
Adware Protection - Ad-Aware SE Personal
Antivirus - Kaspersky Personal
              - Kaspersky ANTI Hacker
              - Kaspersky Anti Spam
-------------------------------------------------------
Why i needed a system restore - my computer was having slow boot speeds and when starting up (not when windows explorer loads, but right AROUND where it shows the "welcome"screen" it attempts to reformat my hard drive, but it always fails. This all started when i tryed to format my hard drive by right clicking it in my computer and clicking format. a popup came up asking if i wanted to format my drive next system restart, so i said yes.......ever since, it attempts to format at the startup, and it fails......ill try to get some screenshots if my EXPLAINATIONS ARENT good enough.
---------------------------------------------------------
Soviet Genius, when you say "reformat reinstall"......i was wondering, how do you do that? (please be very specific and detailed)

THX for the replies so quickly by the way
format/reinstall

1. insert Windows CD into CD-ROM drive
2.restart pc
3. while the comp is booting, push whatever button gets u into ur bios setup (mines DEL some other pc's use F8 or ESC. it might even say "push ___ to enter setup")
4. while in ur bios setup, look for something along the lines of "boot priority" or "boot sequence"
5. change it so whereever ur Windows CD is, it boots first. (ex. if its in ur DVD drive, make ur DVD drive boot first) (and dont worry this isnt going to hurt ur computer)
6. save and exit
7. ur comp will now boot off the windows CD.
8. it will ask u along the lines of "do u want to just install windows or format and install windows"
9. u will chose format and install windows
10. let windows do the rest.

i dont know how computer savvy u are, but i hope this is easy to understand.

Solve : Missing Folder in My Computer Folder?

Answer» HI,
I inadvertently renamed my “MY DOCUMENTS” folder, then did an undo as soon as I
realized that I had done so.  Previously, when I clicked on the MY COMPUTER icon I would see BOB’S DOCUMENTS listed along with the other FOLDERS and devices. Now,
BOB’S DOCUMENTS is not listed.  What do I have to do so that the My Documents folder will appear.
Thanks for your help.
hmmm....

the only thing i can think of, is that somehow u made the folder HIDDEN. thats probably not the problem, but it only takes a second to check. thats about the extent of my knowledge.

P.S.

if ur not sure how to make hidden files appear, click on "my computer" then at the top of the page SELECT....

TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW(tab)> then scroll down to the "hidden files and folders" section and select "show hidden files and folders".

if your folder was hidden, make it visible without having the "show hidden folders" mode on by...

right clicking folder> selecting properties>looking at the bottom of the page for "ATTRIBUTES" and checking to se if it was hidden, it will have the "hidden" box checked if it was>simply un check box to make viewable without having "show hidden folders" mode on.

Solve : Bookmarks disappeared, and Torpark...?

Answer» HI  !

I turned on my computer today, and 3/4 of my bookmarks have disappeared. (I had to GOOGLE you guys! Good thing I remembered the word, "HOPE"!)
There is also no scrolling-thingy on the right to move down the bookmarks -- it also has disappeared -- though the ONE for the current page is there  :-?
How can I get my bookmarks back? How did I do this?!

Also, can someone explain to me exactly what Torpark is for in very simple language.
My impression is that it is an anonymizer if I want to browse sites anonymously. However, I want to know if it is like an identity that I GO into *when* I want to be anonymous; or whether when I download it my identity is then changed forever to this anonymous status ??
And, if I am registered on a site with my old identity, will I have to go and re-register because I can't log in?
I don't understand it.

Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me!

Hello. I've made a custom FILE extension for FILES I don't want activated. Now, I was wondering if there was a WAY, a special DLL or something, that will prompt the user to CHANGE the filename when he/she double clicks, like a preset opening action that calls for the prompt.

Solve : Where the %#$ is Standby??

Answer»

I just formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP. I had Win 98 SE on it before. Anyway, STANDBY doesn't show up. Not even if I hold Shift in the shutdown box (on the other XP machine Hibernate switches to Standby when you hold shift). And since I use standby so much, I'd really like to have it back. And yes, my computer supports ACPI (which Windows refused to detect completely).

EDIT:
I thought I had specs in my signature. I guess not.
eMachines eTower 366i
533MHz Celeron
256MB RAM
20GB HD
4MB ATI Rage IIc AGP
This is most likely to be caused by a driver problem.  And I mean ANY driver.  It could be a printer driver, sound card driver, etc.  Best advice is to ensure you've got all the most up to date drivers for all of your hardware.  Bring your XP installation fully up to date with Windows Update.  Then see if the problem remains. The 366i is a 366MHz processor, in its original configuration, and only had a 4.3GB hard drive: http://www.epinions.com/S0635170-etower_366i/display_~full_specs

Have you upgraded the processor and hard drive?  Even so, with the original onboard video which only allocates 4MB of system memory to video, I think you have a very marginal system to be RUNNING Win XP.  I would have stayed with Win 98SE with that computer.  Yes, the processor and hard drive have been upgraded. I was going to get NEW sound card drivers today. But it doesn't appear that there are any new video card drivers. I'll check ATI's website. Thanks for the suggestions!

-JohnWell, I was not suggesting updating video drivers, although certainly might be a good idea.  I meant that your video capacity with your current hardware is quite limited for Win XP.  You might think about installing a PCI video card, one with at least 32MB of video memory.  I believe you do not have an AGP slot, so PCI is the only option for a hardware video upgrade.  ebay is an option.  If you wanto to keep the cost to a bare minimum, something like this would be one option: Verto PNY GeForce2 MX200 PCI 32MB Video / grafix card  For a card with 64MB of memory, something like PNY Virto GeForce2 MX400 64Mb PCI Video Card  You might find some better buys; I just picked that one for sake of conversation.  Also, I'm biased toward nVidia.  So, look at ATI also.

For new options, take a look at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Recs=10&Nav=|c:319|&Sort=0

And you believed right; but hey, this is eMachines we're talking about.

This is most likely to be caused by a driver problem.  And I mean ANY driver.
Even Windows XP's own drivers? I haven't installed any drivers myself. I stuck with whatever Windows picked when I installed it.

Well, thanks for the help so far!

But it just happens that all of my hardware is ancient, and I haven't been able to find Windows XP compatible drivers. Can anyone find new (possibly Direct3D compatible) drivers for the Rage IIc AGP? Or my "Crystal SoundFusion" sound card? The last ones I tried made me have to use System Restore. Thanks.

-JohnEek.  Ancient hardware and XP are not a great combination.  I see that ATI no longers provides XP drivers for that graphics card (if it EVER did).

Would now be a good time to extol the virtues of Linux?    Alternatively, you can try upgrading your computer, or just ditch it and start again.

Solve : Problem Installing Windows XP Home?

Answer»

Not sure if this really a WINDOWS or a hardware problem, but it manifests itself in windows.

Having had a problem with my PC I decided to start from scratch and re install windows xp HOME. I formatted the hdd and started the install. Before it got to the Windows logo I got the blue screen with the error message: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and reporting a serious hardware or software error. Technical INFORMATION is: STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x807E6549).

I can only assume that this is a motherboard or a bios problem and I have a dead pc. Can anyone give me any good news?

Thanks.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314063/EN-US/Thanks.

Solve : Connecting two computers trough an internet cable?

Answer»

Hi there,

I'm here to ask a complicated thing. Most of you guys know that I don't SPEAK verry good english, but I'll try to do my best. The thing that I want to do is the following: I have two windows xp computers, which are connected with the internet (trough a rauter). If I want to copy a file, I can do this because (by sharing maps in windows xp) and because I'm behind a rauter. But is it possible to connect two PC's with eachother (without a rauter) just by an internet cable? Which software should I use? I'll think I need a crossed cable, but even if I have that, I won't be able to see an hard drive of the other computer. (to be clear, I want to connect two computers, without the internet, without a rauter, just with an internet cable in the other computer)

blackberry  Yes, you can do this.  You need a "crossover cable".  Set IP addresses within the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, and assign the same workgroup, e.g. "HOME".  File and PRINT sharing should then work. Quote

How do I set the ip adresses in the same subnet? Another question, should this work with an non-windows xp computer too? I have a sort of 'machine' that only works as ftp-server. It's a sort of hard-drive with an ethernet connection, but there isn't software to install on your computer, how do I connect this one?Your FTP server machine, do you know what its IP address is?  Can you change that IP address?  I'll answer your other questions once you've replied. Well NORMALY his IP is: 192.168.0.256. But I think that is the IP-adress if i'm behind a router. But if I only will put a cable between the "machine" and the "computer" I don't see the "machine DRIVE" on my computer, so that's my problem. I can change the IP of the machine, but how do I make that I see the HD (of my machine) on my computerscreen Quote
Well normaly his IP is: 192.168.0.256.
That can't be right.  255 is the maximum.

Whatever, just to be sure this works, change the IP address of your FTP machine to 192.168.1.255.  Then change the IP address of your computer to 192.168.1.1.  Connect a crossover cable between the two.  Then, from your computer, do "ftp 192.168.1.255".  It should work.

In answer to your earlier question, yes any DEVICE that complies with the TCP/IP PROTOCOL can sit on the same network as your XP machine. Quote

How do I change my computer IP? I'm not sure, but could it work without changing my computer ip? Because I only need the ip of my "machine"Yes, you will have to change the IP address of your computer.  Have look at my half-finished FAQ re networking.  That will help your understanding of this point, and also point you to the correct settings.

Solve : Help with my windows?

Answer»

Hi,

i have a question to ask. This morning, when i turned on my PC desktop running windows XP Pro, it loaded up the windows. Then, after leaving it for a while for it to settle, i went to open up a word. It took ages and STILL did not respond. All i could SEE was the hourglass of the mouse pointer. I KNEW that tells me it's processing the task but this is from the local machine and it shouldn't take that long. I could not run any applications after that.

Then, i did ctrl+alt+del trying to end the process. It was not there. i had no idea what's causing this to happen.

Then, i tried to shut down the computer. This too took ages.

I don't know what's happening here. It's OK yesterday. But what i did to it yesterday was to download the windows update for it. And that's it.

Is there anyway to get around this problem.

Thank you very much in advanceQuick remedy to cure Windows.
1)Take a bottle of Windex.
2)Open the PC case.
3)spray Windex freely onto the the mother board and the power supply until you SMELL and see smoke premeating your room.
4) Ta-da, you don't have to do windows ever again in your life.
  8-)
J/k

Seriously, did you check for virus? Any applications running in the background?
Try to start your PC in safe mode to see if it work.

Write BACK with more info perhaps you can get more help.

1. do a virus scan
2. do a spyware scan
3. run ccleaner ( download from here http://www.ccleaner.com/ )
4. run hijack this (download from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) and post a log here

if the first 2 clear the problem then u dont need to do the other 2.

Solve : defag not working, not sure what to do?

I'm not sure what to do with it, I went to clean the disk and defrag, when it gets stuck and tells me to scandisk, whcih I do. I REBOOT and try again and once agin it tells me to scandisk. I don't know what i did wrong, but I have seemed to have lost everything. The only way I get anything on the screen is to hit crtl, alt, delete. if someone could please help me I'll be very thankful. I really need to it up in running at home so I won't get in trouble for using the one at WORK.Once again thank you for any help you can assist with. What happened prior to this? What else is not working correcctly? What spyware/adware/virus programs are being used regularly?Don't know what system your on or what you have lost but...

OK, if I were you. You need to scan disk first. If that STALLS, you have issues, just keep restarting. If that doesnt work, try and get onto your desktop (cancel scan disk), perform a spybot check (great ones at download.com - spybot search and destroy for a basic app, if you need more thorough checks come back for more info.).

Restart your system. Try scan disk again. If that works, great...

Moving on to defrag... BEST way is, ctrl alt dlt, shut down everything apart from what it TAKES to keep your system running, it would help if I knew what windows you were using but generally keep open Explorer and Systray and your fine, shut everything else down, don't have ANY internet programmes running in the background especially. Just don't touch the bugger while it'd defragging... (do you even need to defrag???)

Solve : Trouble to start telnet service in win xp?

Answer»

Hi,

in my win xp  SYSTEM

for local system the TELNET setvice is running
But when I put for perticular user its not running its error,

can anyone tell me  what to update?Don't use telnet if you can possibly help it.  It's notoriously insecure.  Try an SSH server which you can connect to using the fabulous SSH client, PuTTY.but I am using VLAN

which I think so secured.

Thanks to suggest me for awarness,VLANS are not completely immune to packet sniffing.  Telnet is plain TEXT.  Anything you send over telnet (passwords included) can be readily EXTRACTED.  Not so with SSH, which uses an encrypted channel.

If you must use telnet, what happens when you start the telnet service?  Do you see any errors in the event logs?

Solve : XP Networking Problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I just purchased an HP a1410n and am trying to network it with the computer I am replacing it with (an HP 6475Z). The Older computer (i'll call HP1) is running Windows XP Professional sp2, and the new computer (HP2) has Win XP Media Center.

I ran the New connection wizard on both computers and selected file and print sharing. My internet connection is dial-up and that connection can be detected fine by my new computer which opens the connection easily enough, but cannot recieve data through it.

I cannot share files either, HP2 does not detect HP1 (and vice versa) and I did place them on the same Workgroup. HP1 is on a Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter, and HP2 is on an NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (which i think is the one being used) and also has a 1394 Net Adapter listed.

trying to "View Workgruop Computers" on HP2 causes about 30 seconds of busy time and then an error that reads: "mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the network administrator of this server to find out if yo uhave access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance..

--Joseph Salinas Edinburg, TX.Have a LOOK at "2 computer netwoking" under Computer Hardware. There's some good and BAD advice. This is a very common and frustrating problem. :-?

  • Go to "Control Panel"
  • Click on "Network and Internet Connections"
  • Right click the connection you are using for that computer (eg. "Wireless Network Connection" or "Local Area Connection") and select properties.
  • Look where it says "This connections USES the following items:" and look to see if the protocol "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol" is checked.
  • If not there click "Install...". Then highlight "Protocol" and press "Add...". Now in the new window find the protocol that has "IPX/SPX" somewhere in the name, click it and press "OK".
  • Now, consult the list of items and make sure the protocol is checked. Then Press "OK".

This needs to be done on both computers, once done you it should work. If not re-run the the Home Network Setup Wizard, then it should work.

[/list]Okay tc_pole, I added the new Protocol you suggsted.

After fiddling around with the Network Wizard for a while, I finally got both to say "connected; HP2 (direct connection to internet) & HP1 (sharing internet connection). I can now share files between the PC's, Thanks!

Now the only remaining problem is my internet connection. I still cannot view websites on HP1. The LED's flicker when I hit enter on a URL (the request is sent), but after that, nothing.

(Yes I KNOW I'm shouting, but folks here need to know this - this is not the first time I have seen this incorrect advice given. )

If you're having networking problems, the answer is usually to be found in incorrect TCP/IP settings and incorrect SMB (domain/workgroup) settings.  Installing another protocol may seem to fix the problem, but I guarantee it will cause other problems.

FYI: IPX/SPX is a networking protocol used by Novell NetWare o/ses.  Does anyone here use Novell NetWare?  I thought not.   Quote

Howdy and thanks for the information folks. So far I've had no problems with the IPX/SPX, so i have not removed it. I will, however, keep on top of any errors that occurr. I also will try making a RESTORE point and removing it to see if my initial problems re-introduce themselves.

Solve : Firewall problems?

Answer»

I have a question about my Yahoo! Instant Messanger not working on my computer any more.  Here is what happened.

Yesterday, while I was ONLINE, I got a couple of IM's from someone I didn't know. I didn't reply, I just closed the window.  About an hour later, I needed to take a break so I shut my laptop without turning it off.  When I OPENED it back up, there was a warning window that said something about the firewall and I had to either allow it or deny it.  I clicked deny; I was afraid it had something to do with the unknown person who IM'd me.  Well, as soon as I did that, my Yahoo! Instant Messanger can no longer connect. I've contacted Yahoo! and they gave me a couple of suggestions to change some of my Yahoo! IM settings but none worked. They then told me to contact my ISP.  However, they won't HELP because they said it's a Yahoo! problem.

I've checked my firewall settings and as far as I can tell, the firewall is Off.  Also, in the exceptions tab, Yahoo! Messanger is selected.

I've tried uninstalling Yahoo! IM and reinstalling it, but no luck still. I've also tried a System Restore, and no luck there either.

How can I change my firewall settings to let me use this PROGRAM again? Or is there something else I need to do?  I can't seem to find anything in my Firewall setting to change that will allow me to use this program again.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am having the same problem with itunes- Its putting it into the exceptions tab, normally I just right click on my wiresess icon at the bottom an alter the settings from thereMonknSharona.....  What operating system are you using ?

Which firewall are you using ?

Have you run a virus scan from safe mode ?

Solve : command interpreter?

Answer»

I made a windows startup disk, 98, and now I can't get out of this and return to windows.  Each time I start the computer, I'm in the Dos start up program and it continues asking me for the COMMAND interpreter.  I have been at this for days!  Please help Take the floppy out of the disk drive.  Restart. The floppy was taken out but computer still starts like the floppy is still in there and continues to go into the start up Dos program The program in Dos continues to ask me for the command interpreter and I can't exit this program and I can't return to windows. Please help.Is there a CD in the drive?  If not, it sounds like you might have changed your hard drive.

What happens when you type "win"?it says INVALID path.I have not changed my hard drive only a system restore.  I didn't have any problems except getting my D-Link Router to work; then I made a startup disk and now can't get out.Something has obviously been changed. If you are RUNNING W98, there should be about 3 COPIES of command.com on the hard disk. They will be located at c:\command.com, c:\windows\command.com, and c:\windows\command\command.com. When it asks for the location of the command interpreter point it to one of these locations. If it still can't find command.com, reboot with the floppy and at the a:> prompt, type sys c:, remove the floppy and reboot.

Edit: Limit your question to a single thread. Posting the same thing in several threads only CAUSES confusion and will not get you the help you need any faster.I entered sys c: at the a prompt and it said, system transferred; when I rebooted, it when back into the same dos mode at start upIf you removed the floppy, you should be at the c:> prompt. Type cd\windows then winIt now says  device or resource by VFAT is not present or unavailable.  System halted.Try to boot into safe mode (NOT safe mode with command prompt). Hold down the Ctrl key while the computer boots. This should bring up a menu to let you choose safe mode. If successful, go to start/run and type sfc. Click OK. If it finds files that have been deleted or corrupted, restore the files. If you cannot boot to safe mode, you will need to reinstall windows.I am in the dos program, there is no start or run; it all has to be in dos at the A prompt in the start up program (no disk is in); each time I restart, it always goes to this. You don't get to an A prompt unless you boot from a floppy. Remove the floppy disk, shut down, follow the the above instructions. But there is NO floppy; there are no cds; my computer goes to the "a" prompt from the start up every time I reboot...just as if there was a floppy in.

Solve : Change Name of DVD Drive in My Computer?

Answer»

I want to change the name of my DVD Drive in My Computer and I've FOUND this information on how to do it

"Copy and paste the CODE below into notepad.

CODE
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\X]
=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\X\DefaultLabel]
="CHANGE DRIVE LABEL HERE"

Once in notepad, change the two "X" values to the drive letter you want to change. (eg. DriveIcons\E)

Now change "CHANGE DRIVE LABEL HERE" to whatever you want to label to say (eg. My Backup)

SAVE the file to your desktop, and give it any name, and a .reg EXTENSION. (eg. Backup.reg)

Now go to your desktop and double click the file. It will ask to merge, say yes.

log off and back on (or restart)"

I've tried doing this, but whenever I get to the part where merge the newly created registry file, I get the error that the file is not a valid registry script and I can only import binary registry files. Any ideas? What are you trying to change it from and two and how did it get this way? Has it ever been as you are trying to arrange it? Any reason for wanting to reassign a drive letter? Be careful with that registry!  No, I know how to change the drive letter, I'm trying to change the actual name. For example from DVD-RW Drive to Plextor. I've never had it this way before, but supposedly adding this to the registry allows for this change. Thanks.Right-Click on drive, click Properties. Change the label as you see fit. No messy regedit-ing. Can't do it that way..... the properties menu doesn't let me change the name that way. the box is there, but I can't type anything in it.Whats The Point In Doing that??? id Just Stick with standard Lettering that's fine, then YOU can stick with standard lettering. i however would like to change it, mainly to make it easier to tell between multiple drives.I wouold love to be able to do this in my computer. I can change the name of feverything else there. BUT for some stupid reason microsoft DIDNT give us the ability to do so...darn U micro darn uuu.

i think i should take over microsoft better yet the worlldddddwell supposedly that registry script will let you... i'm just not sure how to enter the script into my registry.kk, well i got it to work... not sure why it didn't work b4, but here's what i did:

open up notepad, copy this code into it and change the X to the drive letter and enter in whatever name you want:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\X\DefaultLabel]
="Desired Name of Drive"

now save this as a .reg file and the run it. thanks.

Thanks in advance.   woodybutshouldhe.....   Go to bootdisk.com and d/l a win 98 boot disk ....... besure it has the Fdisk on it as well .
That should get you going ......

What is the computer or MOTHERBOARD make/model and the computer configuration - processor/RAM/hard drive? If it can't boot from CDROM is it enough of a computer to run XP?

In fact there is a relatively easy solution to this problem. Smart BootManager enables you to boot from CDROMs even though the BIOS may not support that.

That SAID, if your BIOS is so old it doesn't boot from CD, the system is likely to be so slow that your WinXP EXPERIENCE will be painful at best.

Solve : StandBy is Screwy?

Answer»

I THINK this is a WINDOWS problem, but it may be a hardware problem.

I just noticed this recently; it could have been an issue for a week or so.

When I close my laptop lid, the machine is supposed to go into StandBy.

But what's happening is, it's going to the "Preparing to StandBy..." screen, and then doing NOTHING more.

===================

Some nitty-gritty:
XP SP2
Dell Inspiron 6000

Recent changes:
- Removed NAV and Norton Firewall
- Installed Kerio Firewall
- Ran Windows Defrag (Right-click on c:\ => TOOLS => Defragment Now) and Windows Error-Checking (same tab) whilst logged on as Admin in Safe Mode on Tuesday

I HAVE run AVG Virus, Kapersky Virus, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, CWShredder, and a-squared, as well... Clean bill of health. I DID have "System Restore" turned off for the last four days or so... Can't remember what process recommended I do that, but I sure wish I hadn't!
===================

Any thoughts? Everything I find on laptop issues are that it won't go into StandBy... But this seems to be different... It's trying to go into StandBy...Something else I just noticed...

Even though it's showing the "Preparing to Stand By" screen, and won't come out of that (without powering off)... The CAPS LOCK and NUM LOCK key still work....

Isn't that strange. Can you get into standby normally, without closing the lid?

And the reason it was recommended that you turn off SysRestore is because it can save viruses, making them undeleteable. That's why mine is noticeably OFF. re: Restore... But don't virus scanners find the viruses in the "Restore" points? I run a full AVG scan every morning, so I presume I'm clean, anyway.

======

Because I never put it in Standby normally, I never noticed this quirk about Dells - but which seems to be pretty well documented on their message boards:

When you put a Dell laptop in Standby manually, it never comes back

Now, I tried it a few times yesterday.

Yes, it goes into Standby.

But, no, no combination of touchpad clicks, spacebar taps, and dirty looks will bring it back.

So I got creative - I closed the lid for a moment and opened it back up.

And got the

"Preparing to Stand By..." screen... frozen....I also tried disabling Kerio, and still had the same problem.

Similar problem with Hibernate.

I'm guessing that there is some process that needs to shut down, but isn't?

Anyway to figure THAT out?

Is this embedded in Windows, in separate Power Management Drivers, or what?

In other words, what should I prepare myself to replace??!?

ThanksI realized that lately I have been using the S-Video output into my TV to watch episodes of "Lost" that I downloaded... Could that have compromised the video settings, which in turn would screw up Standby?

I CHECKED my Device Manager, and under "Monitor" I had two "Plug and Play Monitor"s listed. Is THAT a problem?

Lastly, I found this: Quote

If your computer won't enter standby or hibernation, it may require updated drivers. Power management features, especially standby and hibernation, rely on device drivers that support power management in addition to compatible hardware. Incompatible video drivers prevent these features from working. The built-in VGA driver, for example, is a bare-bones driver that doesn't support power management.

If standby and hibernate don't work, install an updated driver for your display adapter.

I THOUGHT I knew how to do this, but everything I can find tells me my drivers are OK. Is there a trick to this? FOr instance, it's a laptop... How do I find the monitor's driver?. Quote
I realized that lately I have been using the S-Video output into my TV to watch episodes of "Lost" that I downloaded... Could that have compromised the video settings, which in turn would screw up Standby?...

Solve : Outlook 2002 .pst file incompatible?

Answer»

My Outlook Express address book became corrupt.  I was unable to open Outlook Express at all.  The address book was the same one I had in Outlook.  I copied the address book from Outlook and then reinstalled windows.  I put the same version of Outlook BACK on the computer.  I have tried to copy the address book back to Outlook but keep getting the ERROR message that the .pst file is incompatible.  What can I do?Did you obliterate all .pst files on your hard DRIVE, when you reinstalled Windows?  Are you sure you backed up the correct one?  What method are you using to open the .pst file?  What error message are you seeing EXACTLY?OK, I have tried to fix my problem but have now encountered a new one.  I went to another computer and typed in all my addresses.  I have most of them in groups.  I typed them into Outlook Express (version 6).  I tried copying the .wab file and then copying that file onto the new computer but when I open the address book on the new computer nothing is there.  I have tried looking on the internet but so far everything I see says that you cannot move a "group" from one computer to another.  Is this true?  If not then can you tell me how to do that? That just happened to me yesterday but it corrected it self. After about an hourCorrected itself??? Must have been the hour waiting.  corrected itself?  I don't understand, everything I read says you cannot move groups.  My question is, is this true?  As far as correcting itself, I don't understand what you mean.....after an hour you looked again and it was all there?    :-?

Solve : Can't get on most hotspots?

Answer»

I've got an IBM A21 laptop with win2K on it. I have no problems connecting to the internet on my home or office network. I can usually get on any home network that has no SECURITY. I can't seem to get on at the resturant I go to or hotels I stay at or airports. I get a connection to the router no problem I just cant get past it. I've tried a netgear and d-link PCMCIA card and an Airlink USB. I got on once at the resturant USING their cafe.com and after that no luck.
Any sugestions? Each facility has their own access protocol. Ask them for the settings to use it.This is not a protocal problem. I've even been on with their HELP desk on a COUPLE of them. These are wide open.

Solve : Need help finding Microsoft download?

Answer»

I need some help finding the Microsoft download that keeps your download in progress information when a dial up internet connection unexpectedly shuts off when you are in the middle of a Microsoft Update.

It would be for an ME system.

I have Googled it to death,  been on Microsoft searching, I guess I'm PROBABLY not phrasing it right, cause I'm not finding anything about it.

But I am sure I stumbled ACROSS it once on Microsoft's site and seen mention of it on here I believe.

Thanks,I thought Windows just did that by itself, is your ME uptodate?

Yes its up to date.

I just reloaded it with the manufacturer's system recovery disk.

I tinker in the basement, I just have dial up down there. It disconnected earlier and left me having to reload some of the Microsoft Updates.   .

I'm all over the keeping things updated!

Thanks,So is there no such download?
