Solve : Query About A Certain File Type?

Answer»

What file does the extension .LST denote?

I have a file called setup.lst and with right clicking it and then selecting "open with", am not sure in
what to open it. shouvik..... a quick google turned this up .
1st Reader Keyboard Macro  uses .....  " .LST EXTENSIONS.
LST Family Tree Maker Error File
LST Ingres Dump List File (Computer Associates International, Inc.)
LST Listing or List
LST Oracle Spool File
LST OzWin COMPUSERVE E-mail/Forum Access Library Listing
LST PowerPoint View File (MICROSOFT)
LST BPM Studio Play List (ALCATech)
LST Pro/ENGINEER Temporary File (PTC)
LST Orchida Knitting System (Orchida Soft)
LST SignIQ Field List (ImpulseLogic)

Various programs use this extension; too many to list individually. Take clues from the location of the file as a possible pointer to exactly which program is producing the file. The file's date and time can also help if you know which programs you were running when the file was written.

Hope this assists you .

If in doubt, open with Notepad.  That will never do any harm. Thanks for those replies.[smiley=smiley.gif][smiley=smiley.gif]

The problem is this:

I have downloaded a file ( an installation file for a program), which contain the following
two files:

setup.exe
setup.lst

while i tried to run setup.exe it showed

"setup can not find C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\7Z02B1.TMP\SETUP.LST . Setup is aborting.

While i tried to run setup.lst i got following message:

"This file does not have a program assoiciated with it for performing this action. CREATE an association in my
computer by clicking view and then clicking folder option"

Now i created a file type called .lst in
Setings > folder option> File Types ( I am using 98 )

but still the probem remains the same.

Any suggestions??This message: "This file does not have a program assoiciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in my
computer by clicking view and then clicking folder option" is probably a red herring.  What program have you downloaded and where from?  Have you downloaded the installation file to your desktop before attempting to install?  Is this definitely a Windows 98 program? The name of the installation is HTML encryptor.

Can you give your email address so that i can directly send it to you??? Quote

Solve : AUTOEXEC.BAT in a Windows XP environment?

Answer»

How can I edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file in a Windows XP environment?
(I have installed a GIS program that requires me to modify it, but I can't find it in my pc)C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT   (it's a hidden file)
And there's nothing TO edit...last time I checked, that file was COMPLETELY empty (size: 0KB)..You have to make changes in Environment Variables. To do this, right-CLICK on My Computer and click Properties. GO to the ADVANCED tab and click Environment Variables. There should be all the stuff that AUTOEXEC.BAT normally would have.

Solve : Network TCP always at 100%, System or Svchost.exe?

Answer»

Well, my IP is 68.47.x.x, but not the one that was previously mentioned. Also, that's not my hostname. So, it's like someone spamming my computer from another computer, or what? Do I have to call my ISP and tell them to block that address?

What now?Get HijackThis, run it, save a logfile, zip it and ATTACH it to your next post. I know you say you keep your comp clean, but I have found many viruses on my computer that my standard scanner is too stupid to find. We'll look at it and then it will settle the question of if your PC is as clean as you think it is.HijackThis log attached.Inspecting now. I have ALREADY found a Trojan... I will post again with more detailed info in a minute...Color Key:

Red - Serious threats that should be immediately removed (Fixing is STRONGLY recommended)
Blue - Programs known to cause problems but are not necessarily the source of the problem (Fixing is recommended unless you RECOGNIZE and use these programs)
Dark Green - Issues that are not problem-causing, but can be FIXED to improve performance (fixing is optional)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
Do you use AOL Instant messenger? It won't hurt much to have it on there, but even if you do use it, removing this won't hurt it either.

Anything with (file missing) can be fixed; doing so has solved several small problems on my PC, but it really isn't necessary.

You certainly do good work on your PC; it's the shortest logfile I've seen posted here in a while. But even the best of scanners may miss a few things. Oh dude, no problem. I just got that today. That my little helper, so to speak...I'm sure you don't "encourage" or "promote" any type of less-than-legal activity on this site, and I respect that. But what I do in my spare time is my business, you see. Plus, I've already scanned it, it's fine. I'll say again, this cannot be the problem, seeing as how I just got it today.Wait - You run this? I thought you were infected by it... I'm not going to comment.Ok, here we go with the semi-long explaination as to not confuse the youngins...

The problem I've been having has been going on for a WHILE now. I just got C&A, so that cannot be the problem. I haven't even really used C&A yet, other than looking at it for about 5 minutes. Basically it's just sitting there..and yes, it's virus/trojan free (believe me, I've checked and double checked). Even if it wasn't, it still would not explain that problem I've been having.

There.Did you talk to your ISP or [email protected]
Well I mean, I wasn't sure that was necessary. :-/ I thought it was just a problem with my computer..I guess I could GIVE it a shot..As I've said before, this is almost certainly an attack from outside your network.  Unless you have a decent hardware firewall that can silently drop these queries, it is best to get them stopped by your ISP.  Any ISP worth their salt should not be passing this on to the end user anyway!Ok, well I sent an email to [email protected], so maybe they'll take care of the problem...Only one thing. I just checked out the status of my internet connection. I went over to the "support" tab and looked at "address type". It said "assigned by DHCP"...o..k? Never seen that before. I always thought it said "automatic" or something like that...Also, my ip is different than it was yesterday. I pulled up cmd and typed ipconfig /all and checked all that out. It says I have IP routing enabled, dhcp enabled, and my ip is different...so...yeah...That would mean you have a dynamic IP address. it changes from time to time. The function of a dynamic IP (besides ticking me off from time to time) is unclear to me, but for some reason a static, unchanging IP is more expensive in general.

Basically, it's the Internet's way of causing minor headaches, esp. if you're hosting a web site. Quote

It said "assigned by DHCP"...o..k? ... I always thought it said "automatic"
DHCP EQUALS automatic.

Imagine you have a network of a thousand computers (not uncommon in large companies, and not uncommon for ISPs).  Would you rather go round each computer, giving it a specific number (what happens when you remove a few and later add a few?) or would you rather let them all receive their numbers automatically?  DHCP makes management much simpler in many ways.

Except of course when, like you, you know about dynamic DNS services.

Solve : 'A disk read error occurred' message appears?

Answer»

Hi, this message appears when I turn my laptop on: 'A disk read error occurred'.

I'm not sure what the reason is, I have check several sites about it and also on www.vaio-link.com
but it doesn't really tell me much. Something about CMOS settings on my laptop, but I don't know where that is. I happens all the time I turn my computer on and all it says is that message and to press Ctrl, Alt & Delete to restart. However I have to do that several times till i can actually get the Windows XP screen to appear. Can someone help me? And tell me what the problem is? And how to solve it?Sounds like you have a failing hard drive.  Is it still under warranty?

Persevere until you manage to boot into Windows, then run a thorough Scandisk on the drive:  Bring up Windows explorer; right-click on the hard drive (C: ).  Click properties.  SELECT the Tools tab; press the Check Now button.

Make sure both option boxes are check, then click Start.  Be aware that this process can take a long time (hours).I went to the scan disk in the Windows Explorer properties menu and did what you said and selected both boxes and press Start, its says this message:

' The disk check could not be preformed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some windows files on the disk. these files can be accessed only by restarting windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check to OCCUR the next time you restart the computer?'

when I press yes nothing happens.  And when I press No this message appears:

'Windows was unable to complete the disk check'

I really do not know what to do. I really hope my laptop doesn't break down. PLease help?If you choose yes, scandisk should then run when you reboot.Do I need to back up any files before I scan disk? And what happens afterwards when Scan Disk has finished? Does it give me a result of something? I'm not very good with the technical side of computers.Scandisk will not damage any files that aren't already damaged.  It will create a log report and store it at C:\Scandisk.log (or something like that).  Easy to spot. How does this problem actually happen? Installing NEW software? Memory FULL up?

I have been using this laptop like I usually do & its has only been 2 years old.It could be something as SIMPLE as a manufacturing defect.  Hard drives are vacuum-sealed units.  The read heads hover just above the surface of the disks.  If the vacuum seal is less than perfect, dust can enter the hard drive and get between the read heads and the disk platters.  This causes the heads to crash on the disks; physical damage results.

Just one possbility.Ok, thanks.

I have done the Scan Disk as suggested. Is there anything after that I should do? Or is it all fixed now?

Solve : defragmenting.......?

Answer»

im using XP SP2
everytime i defragment the c: and e:
i noticed that
Pink: low performing system files and
Red: low performing files and folder
are very HIGH than
BLUE:high performing files and folder

can somebody KNOW how to MAKE the (red and pink) their performance get faster?Run a disk cleanup, and maybe a restore, then degramentate it.infoseeker, what defragmentation PROGRAM is this?  I've never heard of:

Pink: low performing system files and
Red: low performing files and folder
are very high than
Blue:high performing files and folder

I gather you're not using Windows defragmenter since it uses red, blue, green, and white, and it does not give any indication of "low performing system files", etc.

Solve : installing windows xp...major problem?

Answer»

ok where to begin with my horrible day...ok
first i wanted to increase a partition from 15gb to 20gb from my C drive, then when it tried to boot to windows only the bar screen WOULD pop up for a second then reboot.
it says that the "NTLDR is missing" when it boots off the hdd
then i completly erased everything off the drive USING the HDD disk that came with it.
now the installation PROBLEM:  i changed the bios to load from the cd-rom first then the hdd and i put the windows xp cd in there. the cd loads but when it goes to the installation screen it says that the "hdd is not recognized or there is no hdd" ...now my head hurts and im out of ideas so any HELP would be great to atleast getting windows to boot again.

thanks. Is the hard drive recognized correctly in the BIOS? Were you using XP's disk management to setup the drive? It has everything you NEED. How old is the drive? What are the computer specifics?

If you can see the drive, download the free diagnostics from the hard drive makers site and check the drive for functionality.the hdd is recognized on the bios and i was using the windows xp installation cd.
the hdd is a maxtor 80gb and its about a year old.
my comp specifics are 1.83 MHz, amd athlon i think, i dont kno the other specifics i cant check becuse im using another comp right now becuase that comp wont load XP

thanksCan you remove the partition(s) with the Windows CD and reinstall just using the XP CD?nope i cnat remove anypartitions becuase when i choose any feature on the XP cd, then on the next page its says that the hdd is not connected or is not recognized
but i used the maxtor cd that came with the hdd and it sshowed the partitions but it only let me write full zeros which deleted all the info
but now when i look at the partition size it says the full 80 gb and says that the disk is empty and to install an os
then when i try i just keep having the same problem as beforeCan you remove the partition with the Maxtor utility and then try to install Windows?

Solve : Home Networking problem?

Answer»

I am experiencing a really strange networking problem which I hope someone might be ABLE to help with.

I have a three year old Windows-XP Desktop System (HP Pavilion A145) with Linksys 54G wireless card configured in Ad-Hoc mode, with WEP activated. Other wireless enabled SYSTEMS in the house have been wirelessly connecting to the Internet via the HP's Alcatel Speedtouch USB ADSL connection until recently.

But for the past few weeks I have only been able to connect from a remote system for about one minute before the remote connection stops responding. The Internet still works on the local system. A reboot of the HP and once again the remote systems (tried from three different systems running W-98, W2k and W-Me) can connect again to the Internet for a short time, enough to download one or two pages and then it goes dead.

The remote systems show the wireless connection is still up; IPCONFIG shows the remote computer still to have its assigned IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.32), however a ping back to 192.168.0.1 times out. Pinging 127.0.0.1 is still working. Back on the HP host system, Control Panel/Network Connections shows:

Alcatel Speedtouch Connection - Connected, Shared
Network Bridge - Connected
Wireless Network Connection - Connected, Bridged

All systems are free of viruses and Spyware and have up to date AV and anti-spyware signatures. I have swapped out the HP host's wireless card for a spare one, but the symptoms remain the same. There is a ZoneAlarm firewall active on the local system; XP Firewall is disabled.

This set-up has been working fine for over two years. I am completely stuck as to what to try next. Is it perhaps some kind of accidental interference or Denial of Service from a neighbour (there are SEVERAL other wireless signals in the vicinity)? What else can it be? What can I try? I'd be really pleased to hear any ideas as I am at my wits' end.
Yes, you're right, wireless LANs are prone to interference problems.  Anything from neighbouring LANs to your own microwave/boiler/vacuum cleaner can degrade network performance.  I see you are using internet connection sharing.  In your wireless network you have two main points of failure then: the quality of the radio environment, and the ICS "server" (your HP).

In your situation, the first thing I would do is ditch ICS - for several reasons: the dependence on one PC, the inherent performance degradation, the reliance on a software firewall, etc.  A good solution would be an all-in-one DSL modem/wireless router/firewall.  Those gizmos are very much cheaper now than three years ago.

This immediately takes the ICS server out of the loop, and gives you a much better firewalling system to boot.  If LAN-wide internet access remains as poor as before, you can look to the radio environment for your problem.

To test your wireless LAN quality without changing to a wireless router, you could try the following: set up Windows filesharing, and try moving some large (e.g. 50MB+) files around the network.  See what happens. Thanks, robpomeroy, some good thoughts there.

I was actually planning to switch to a router before this started happening, so I will CONTINUE with this plan, but I had wanted to start with a working system, before making any changes! One other thing I might try, that you just made me think of, is changing channels from 1 to 7 or 15. My setup doesn't do this automatically, but if it is interference, then that might help.

The file share is already set up, but of course doesn't work either, after ping stops working.

Regards,
tbrakeOkay.  Post back with any other problems?Confirm that your hardwares (modem/router/switch) is working fine. Check by replace with a proven working one from a friend.
If the hardware is on 24 hours for 2 years it probably is gone.
My router has just retired recently.I ran into this once with an older netgear wireless router. everything worked sweet for about a year until..... my neighbors got a wireless linksys router. After that I could no longer use my wireless router for more than a few minutes. That may be my problem... :-?

be thankful.

Solve : My icons are stuck with color...?

Answer»

This is such a dumb question but i believe i have exhaused all hopes.  For some odd reason when I changed a picture on my desktop months ago-my icons went from having a translucent background with the words to now having COLOR. I HATE IT.  I have tried every menu in control panels, folder options, and properties EVEN advanced and cannot make them go back.  It is not a big deal except for the fact that it is driving me absolutely crazy.  If any one knows why I would love some help.  I really have tried everything.  Good luck figuring this one out!If you don't know the answer, it's not a dumb question.    What version of Windows are you using?sorry-should have THOUGHT to put that.  I have a dell inspiron 1150 with windows xp professional.
thanks for looking! Here's the answer: How do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?.Wow-I really thought this page would do it  but it doesn't.  The directions for windows does not work, and I don't want to have to install anything to custom build icons.  Why does xp have to make it so hard.  I have tried that opetion before and it still doesn't work....thanks for trying-any other suggestions? Then try this: Right-click on the desktop, choose "ARRANGE Icons by", go to "Lock Web Items on Desktop", un-check that.
Did that and it wasn't checked to begin with-but I checked it then unchecked and....Nope! My computer is possessed. Ok-BELIEVE IT OR NOT I have found the solution-and not on my own.
I searched ALL day and found that because under right click on desk top and go to properties and then go to the desktop tab and click on customize desktop and click on the WEB tab-(never looked here?)  and then deselect any box checked under webpages.  If the other setting mentioned above is in check-it will work.  I FEEL like I just hit the jackpot-what a miracle!  I no longer beleive my computer is possessed!!!!!!!!!  Thanks for all your help!

Solve : windows xp double activation??

Answer»

Someone installed my copy of xp on their computer and activated it while i'm still USING the same copy  on MINE.
I understand one of our computers will have problems now, Which one?
If mine is the one that will have problems, what should i do if i can't get him to uninstall his?I have never heard of registration/activation causing problems... If you have used to CD before, then it shouldn't WORK on another computer due to the security device...

FlameIt is the upgrade home version and it is working on a second computer so far.Are you sure yours is activated? Are you positive the other one was?If you used the CD on both computers, I'm suprised it worked.

FlameIn my expierence Microsoft is pretty lienient with activating products, I would expect a little moreso with an upgrade. My guess would be that if you reinstalled it on one of the computers (or on a third) it may make you call them. Calling them is really simple, you read the numbers off the SCREEN, and if it doesn't like you, then you talk to a person who asks "is this installed on any other computers" You answer, they give you the key.

I wouldn't worry about it too MUCH, Microsoft isn't going to remotely detonate your computer or anything.

Solve : Can't save any file to my computer?

Answer»

Hi, i've been a lurker here for a little while, using questions other people have asked to get my own answered.  Anyhow, I haven't seen anyone with a similar problem like the one I am about to ask, so here goes:

Whenever I TRY to SAVE any TYPE of file to my computer, whatever program (most of the time Internet Explorer) freezes, and I have to force CLOSE Internet Explorer.  This is very annoying being that I am in school and I need to save files that my professors put up on their websites.  Anyone know any solutions?Format your computer.  Sounds like a bad Virus to me, or just a big error not worth spending days to fix, so format! Have you done spyware and virus scans? What programs do you USE on a regular basis?Do you have anti-virus protection?  Are you using any spyware/malware removal tools?  If not, do so.  Since you've been a lurker here for awhile, you've probably seen the usual recommended programs for this.  And, I imagine the school you attend may have some info about avoiding computer problems from online exposure.  Am I right?  Nevertheless, if you need more info on such tools, post here again.

Also, do you periodically run Disk Cleanup?  And, delete temporary internet files?

What OS are you running?  If Win XP, do you have SP2 installed?

Solve : Data Execution Prevention and Processor Usage?

Answer»

Does anyone know how much processing power software Data Execution Prevention (DEP) in XP Pro SP2 takes up? Its set up as /NoExecute=optin, so its only checking 'essential Windows programs and services'. I'd like to know if there would be a noticeable INCREASE in performance if I turned it completely off (all security concerns aside). I can't seem to find an article addressing this issue.

BTW, I don't have hardware DEP capabilities.

Thanks in advance.

--OoberI don't know for certain, but I doubt the increase in speed would be that noticeable. I mean, it just sits there until a script runs. Not very resource-consuming.

This is, as REQUESTED, security concerns aside. If it wasn't for that, I'd be ranting right now about how "it's not worth it" and basically doing a Senior Project's worth of essay-writing. Quote

This is, as requested, security concerns aside. If it wasn't for that, I'd be ranting right now about how "it's not worth it" and basically doing a Senior Project's worth of essay-writing.

I dunno, I've never had DEP yark at me in my life and I've got a hardware firewall, no one ever EMAILS me (plus I've only downloaded one email attachment in the last 9 years, seriously), and I'm relatively cautious about what I download. What would be nice is if I had a processor with the NX or XD bit on the chip. Then it would do all the memory frobbing on the hardware level. Time to start saving for that NEW Dell XPS...

Solve : Removing ME from dual boot system?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 with two hard drives and a different OPERATING system on each one. The original 20G one has Windows ME and the new 200G (partitioned) one has Windows XP. Windows ME has become corrupt and unreliable so I would like to delete it from the system and use the 20G hard drive as a slave drive for storage.  How do I go about doing this? Should I disconnect one or both drives and change the drive settings?  Should I just format the 20G disk from windows XP (I doubt it)?  Do I need to change ANYTHING in the bios settings and what will happen to the drive letters on windows XP? At the moment in windows XP the original 20G disk shows as 'C' drive and the new 200G disk, which is partitioned is shown as 'F' and 'G' drives.  'D' and 'E' are both CD/DVD R-write drives.  I do have everything backed up from both drives, but, of course, I am hoping not to cause any major problems with my XP system if POSSIBLE.  Can anyone give me instructions on exactly what I need to do?  Are you sure that the 20GB hard drive doesn't have XP on it?  Because you seem to be booting from that drive (if it's labelled C: ).  If you can disconnect the 20GB drive from your system and still boot (changing the jumper on the 200GB drive to Master) then the problem is a simple one.  You could reinstall the smaller hard drive as a slave (it will become drive F: ) and reformat it with NTFS or FAT32.No I don't boot from the XP drive.  The 'C' drive is definately the 20G with Windows ME.  If I disconnect this drive what will happen when I reboot - will the drive letters automatically rearrange themselves?  When PC boots and gives me the options to choose operating system, the XP one is listed FIRST and is the default one, but that drive is definately shown as 'F' on the XP system and as 'D' on the ME system.  I am a bit new to doing upgrades and I don't yet understand what goes on in the system when hardware is changed or upgraded etc. so I worry that I might be doing the wrong thing and won't have any idea how to rescue a system if I mess up.  Ok from what I understand you are trying to say is that you just want xp to be the OS of your pc.

Step One :

Remove the drive with ME on it from your computer.

Setp Two :

Set the drive that remains jumpers to "Master".

Step Three:

Boot The PC and Tell me if it boots, and if it does What OS is it running from that drive, also cheak in " My Computer" The Drive letter of the hard drive that is plugged in, you said it was partitioned so thier should be two of them, also remember the size of them then post back.

Solve : Computer won't turn on..?

Answer»

Well I got up this morning and my COMPUTER won't turn on at all. And I don't really know what to do. Yesterday it was having some PROBLEMS and just restarting over and over.. Uh, so I decided I'd see if there's anything to do in this situation. Thanks for the answers. Are the LIGHTS coming on at all? If not, my first guess would be the power supply. A failing power supply will RESET your computer. There are a myriad of other issues it could be (motherboard for one), but that is the easist to test out.

If you are fairly knowlegable, find a computer that is similar to yours and see if you can swap the power supply. Just be very careful to put all the right cables back, and don't force them into place.

Good luck!

Solve : putting windows xp HOME in sleep cog?

Answer»

Hi there, ONE of my computers is a laptop and it's running windows XP HOME edition.
Another computer of my, which is NOT a laptop, is running windows xp HOME too. If I want to set this computer to sleep cog, I can't. Because you have to have windows XP PRO for this function. I tried by pushing the shift while i'm at the shut-down menu but that doesn't work, so I thougt, there is no function for windows xp HOME for that.

However, if the accu from my laptop is up, it put itself to sleep cog.

Does anyne knows how I can put my not laptop computer to sleep cog?

greetz

blackberry  Sleep "cog" - had to Google to find out what I think you mean..

Start>Control Panel>>POWER Options>Power Schemes

Then change the appropriate settings for Home/Office Desk

Good luck..

Solve : Windows Backup utility?

Answer» OK, I made a backup of my "system state". I've got only one question to ask about this, since it's clear what it does: If I burn the .bkf file to a CD, will I be ABLE to boot from it and restore my system that WAY? I ask because I want a backup that I can use to restore my system if something very serious HAPPENS to my computer and I can't boot to Windows. If not, is there a method of doing this? (I LEARNED the hard way that I can NOT backup to a floppy, just a tad too large...)We have seen posts from Mac's "family" before. Turned out they were all Mac too.  Thanks for the speedy answer, Franz.

Solve : file aic 78xx.sys is corrupted?

Answer»

hello there,i perform checkdisk then suddenlythis error show,FILE AIC 78XX.SYS IS CORRUPTED. The volume appears to be in good condition and was not checked.USE /p if you want to check the volume anyway...
what is /p and how can i use it?It would ASSIST if you said what operating system you are using (I presume it's XP). Here's a bit of info on your query...

Chkdsk
Creates and displays a status report for the disk. The chkdsk command also lists and corrects errors on the disk.

The chkdsk command with the parameters listed below is only available when you are using the Recovery Console. The chkdsk command with different parameters is available from the command prompt.

chkdsk [drive:] [/p] [/r]

Parameters none
Used without parameters, chkdsk displays the status of the disk in the current drive.

drive:
SPECIFIES the drive that you want chkdsk to check.

/p
Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive.

/r
Locates bad sectors and RECOVERS readable information. Implies /p.

Note:
The chkdsk command requires the file Autochk.exe. If it cannot find it in the startup directory (\%systemroot%\System32, by default), it will attempt to locate it on the Windows Installation CD. If you have a multiboot computer, be sure you are issuing this command from the drive containing Windows.

Good luck...

Solve : Computer Manage Problems !!!?

Answer»

I recently formatted my 80 gig Western Digital HARD drive which was partitioned into a 25 and a 45 gig partition, I usually keep my operating system on the 20 gig partition. i also have a 250 gig maxter which is used for storage purposes. Now after I did a clean format to my 20 partitioned on my 80 gig western digital and reinstalled windows I noticed that my maxter was coming up as unallocated in manage now I don’t know if my maxter got its file system corrupted after the format, but I used a recovery program to SEE if my data was still in good condition and i noticed that nothing had gotten damaged.  so what am thinking is that I need to somehow rebuild the file system on the hard drive or format it and lose all my data as a last resort sum SUGGESTIONS would be greatly appreciated.A little piece of advice: remove any other HDD before you format or do anything to a HDD. This prevent any possible problem with the unrelated HDD.Your advice is greatly appreciated, but I need solution!!

Solve : "Drive Not Ready" on system shutdown?

Answer»

So when I shutdown/restart my computer, I get a message "Drive Not Ready" and mentions that it can't read from Drive A.

I don't even have a FLOPPY disk installed on my computer, so this message confused me.  So I went into the device manager and just uninstalled my Floppy Drive.  Restarted (without an error message) and when windows loaded I get a "Found New HARDWARE" notification and it reinstalls this phantom Floppy Drive.

What could be the reason for this and what can I do to fix it?Do you know how to get into and use Setup/BIOS? If you know how to enter setup and are comfortable with it, find the floppy drive in BIOS Setup and disable it. Remember to enable it again if you ever install a floppy disk in the future. Happy computing.I do not know how to do that, but I'm fairly COMPETENT, if you walk me through it I don't think I'd screw anything up

ThanksWhat make and model is the computer? Make would be Dell, Compaq, etc. and the model would be the name after it, like "Dell Dimension" or something like that. BIOS's differ from system to (shining) system. I played around in BIOS and figured it out, Floppy isn't showing up in My Computer, so I'd bet this fixes it, I'll post again if not, OTHERWISE, thanks for you help!OK. No problem.

Solve : Internet Page size?

Answer»

I'm sure this is a silly question, but it's been happening for years. I prefer message boards or links to open as a full page, and for months this works ok, then for some unknown reason they start opening as about 66% SCREEN size. I can make them full size by clicking ENLARGE at top of page, and they will continue to open full size until I log off again, and then revert back to smaller size. I have no idea how to stop this or why it suddenly changes?
Any HELP from anyone at all would be really really appreciated, as I would like to stop this once and for all. I know it's only an extra step, but it's annoying. They don't even open on the same bit of the screen, can be anywhere from centred to more to the left or right!! HELP PLEASEIE remembers the geometry of the LAST window you close.  So close all but one IE windows, then set the final window to the size you want, and close it.  Voila.Open IE, stretch the boders out to full size with your mouse, close IE.
Open IE, click the enlarge button, close IE, open IE.Many THANKS Guys, one or the other of these solutions seems to have worked. yippee. I've only been using the blessed machine since 1999! Amazing some of the stuff one doesn't know really. Believe it or not I can actually do enough other stuff, like with everything it's just a case of what you don't know, you don't know. Cheers. Solve : Missing Icon picture?

I adjusted my screen resolution on my computer and my windows DESKTOP Icon's (picture) dissapered. The Icons still function but the picture is GONE instead i have the piece of paper. My third party icons are fine.
Any thoughts?

thanksbump
If it is annoying you so much, set your screen resolution back to the previous settings.
I really NEED more information to HELP you.
What icons are missing ?
What resolution is your screen currently set to and what resolution was it previously ?More IMPORTANTLY: what operating system is this?  You need to rebuild the icon cache, and there are different ways of doing this depending on the version of Windows.

Solve : Stop Error in XP.?

Answer» HEY guys, I was having a problem with my PARENTS machine.  It has recently started restarting itself.  The problem started when my sister installed her software for her digital camera, Kodak easyshare.

Microsoft seems to THINK it's RAM or video card issues.  I'll give those a try NEXT time I'm there.  However any other ideas would be great.

I GET this stop error message as well:

stop:0x0000007e
snpstd.sys - Address ED189932 base at ED181000, Datestamp 405eef8a

Safe mode works fine so I'm leaning towards video card issues.  However as I said, any other ideas would be great.  They are running XP home on a P4 celeron, with a 128 mb ATI radeon and I believe it's 768 mb of RAM.

Any ideas would be great before I go back an try again.

Thanks

Solve : How to get "Show Desktop" icon back on q-launch?

A friend has an older Compaq desktop with ME on it. He has lost his "Show Desktop" icon from his quick launch bar.

How can he get it back?

The computer has been recently cleaned up of problems, and he is having no problems at all with performance.

Just wants the link back.

THANKS,This is a round about way of solving your problem but it WORKS on w2k.
Find ANOTHER ME computer, right click on the icon you want, check it's properties to find the file location.
Then locate the file on your friend's computer and create a desktop icon & drag it down to the taskbar.

On my w2k computer it is.... C:\Documents and Settings\Eddie\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick LaunchThanks Fed,

I will see what I can find and create on my older computer with ME on it.

I keep trying to talk him in to reloading the OS on it.

But that move scares him to pieces.

Thanks again,

Solve : Windows System Restore Back-up?

Answer»

Hey, I did a system restore a few days ago because when I uninstalled a program it deleted a system file and wouldn't load windows at all. I didn't have any other choice but to system restore. Since I was unable to get on windows to backup all my files onto a disk, I had to hope that the system restore with back-up would move everything SAFELY. Well it safely put everything into C:/My Backup cept all my owners documents, which is all the stuff i wanted to keep. It saved everything from my other USER documents and my program files but not my owners documents. I'm 90% sure that its still on here because the same amount of hard drive space is TAKEN up as it was before the recovery(25gb). I was wondering if anyone had any ideas where my stuff MIGHT be, the owners document file is still there but it has nothing in it and says access RESTRICTED. Please help :-?

If it helps the system restore thing is call PCangel system restore and i did a "Full System Restore(Back-up)" and it said it moves everything to C:/My Backup and all I would need to do is reinstall applications and settings. It did do that except misplaced my owners documents. Have you checked their website for info or contacted them?

Solve : Windows Domain Name????

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to help FIX a friends computer problem, which is above me.

He has a laptop from work and was playing AROUND with the settings to copy files from his home machine to his work laptop. Using some admin account the company gave him, he changed his network setting from Domain to Workgroup. He figured if the two matched, he would be all set.

Well now he can't login at all using either the admin or his regular user account. Is there anyway to reset the domain back? He doesn't WANT to tell the company for a couple reasons. Also, he can't wait till Monday to get his IT people to fix it as he needs to get stuff done this weekend.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
Is your friend using Windows XP? If so, have him run a System Restoration. This will reset his settings back. To do this (Windows XP) Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System restore. A new window will now appear. Make sure "restore my system to an EARLIER time" has a bullet point next to it, and click on the next button. You will now see a calendar. Click on the day of, or the day before he changed any settings. If applicable, make sure the TIME on that day is before he messed with any settings. Click on the date and time so that it is hilighted, and click on the next button. You will now see a confirmation screen. Make sure the date and time is correct, and click on the finish button. Your computer will now restart. Before it "saves your user settings" you will see a little status box. It may move rather slowly, so be patient. Once the system runs its course, the computer will restart. Login as usual, and see if your settings are back to normal. Hope this helps

FlameIf this doesn't work, then it will have to go back to the company IT department and explain what happened. Quote

Solve : How to read data from CD in specific session??

Answer»

I just got an audio CD. Now, I want to CONVERT them to MP3 so I don't have to load the CD everytime I want to HEAR the song. The problem is that the songs are written on session 1, and every time my computer look up the CD, it always goes to session 2. The result is that my computer cannot read the file, and won't play the music. The CD can run in my CD player just fine, and it also has its own player INCLUDED in the CD. But the THING is that I want to convert them to MP3. Do you guys have any suggestion what should I do to copy (or read) data from session 1?Do the files in Session 1 show at all when you open the cd :-?No. I knew that the CD has files in Session 1 from Nero. Nero has this feature to "View Tracks", so it is showing me that the CD has 2 sessions. And as default the exporer will look into Session 2. Also, I knew that the audio files were in Session 1, because there were 12 files in Session 1, and the CD also has 12 song tracks.

Yeah, that's what i thought.  You may still have several viruses undetected.  Try doing more free online virus scans using IE after you reinstall Windows.  If you have not ALREADY reinstalled, i'd suggest moving anything you have in the Shared Documents folder to ANOTHER folder, as the files in this folder will be deleted.  Also, you will have to reinstall at least some of your programs, and you will have to reactivate Windows immediately after reinstalling.

I think you mean that you were trying to open Windows Update in the Control Panel.  Try clicking SWITCH to Classic View in the left hand side of Control Panel and you will see what i mean.

Let us know if you need more help.

However I re-installed xp then installed sp2......and got no promt for reactivation

I suspect whats happening with the no activation prompt is that when your system was examined as part of the installation process .... it exactly matched your system as it was before and the serial code and your name etc.was all correct so it is simply reactived automatically.

Answer»

I'm having trouble loading software - "GIMP", it's an open-source art program.

It hangs up and crashes while loading the fonts.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled.

Have deleted all fonts and tried adding back as best as I could.

Still havin' problems.

I have been advised to delete .fonts.cache-1, but can't find it. It's SUPPOSED to be in my %USERPROFILE% subdirectory, but can't find anything of the sort. I have found FNTCACHE.DAT, but I don't think that's it!Bump.Which VERSION of The Gimp and GTK 2 do you have installed? It's happened in previous versions... Which I've uninstalled before installing Gimp 2.2.10-i586 and gtk+ 2.8.9

The WAY I understood it, though, .fonts.cache-1 should be in my %USERPROFILE% subdir, regardless of the Gimp. That it's something that should always be there...  ?Which version of Windows are you running?  Do you have "view hidden files" switched on in Windows Explorer?XP SP2 and yes.Okay, well that file (.fonts.cache-1) is stored under C:\Documents and Settings\Username - not in any sub folder.  If you can't find it there, it isn't there, and you evidently have a different problem.  Are you still having the same problem with the latest versions you've downloaded?  If so, you may need the help of one of the Gimp team in fixing this.  I can't work out of the top of my head what might be causing this.Yes, I have had the crashing problem with every version.

Troubleshooting that is what led to the Font Cache question. I just looked in the %USERPROFILE% of my other XP SP2 machine, and it's not in that one, either.

Is it the kind of thing I can force Windows to create?Hmm...  I wonder if something is preventing The Gimp from creating the font cache, and THAT'S the problem?  Have you tried running The Gimp as Administrator?

From a command prompt, what is the output of the following command?
echo %USERPROFILE%

Incidentally the .fonts.cache-1 is not a Windows-specific file.  It will only appear with programs that have been ported from other (typically Linux/BSD) platforms, like The Gimp/GTK. Quote

From a command prompt, what is the output of the following command?
echo %USERPROFILE%

Nothin'.

c:\Documents and Settings\RJBINNEY>echo %USERPROFILE%

returns

c:\Documents and Settings\RJBINNEY>_
Hmm.  Well the output should be "C:\Documents and Settings\RJBINNEY", I think.

Have you tried as Administrator? Quote
Hmm.  Well the output should be "C:\Documents and Settings\RJBINNEY", I think.
Right. That's what it is... So why the "Hmm"?

Have you tried as Administrator?
I AM the Administrator - or do you mean in Safe Mode?

Right. That's what it is... So why the "Hmm"?
It looked like you were just quoting the command prompt rather than the output of the command.

I AM the Administrator - or do you mean in Safe Mode?
I mean logged on as "Administrator" (which in XP Home you can only access in safe mode, and in XP Pro you can access any time, depending on your settings).

Solve : checksum error cannot access bios?

Answer»

Hi folks, am new to this forum and could really do with some help.
My mum has an old pc...she is not on the internet...only uses it to mess around with photographs and uses word...windows xp...128ram and 10gig, that's all I know really!
She went on holiday for 3 weeks and switched the power off...taking into account the clocks changed???
When I switch it on it says f1 to resume or del to setup. Say's something about the clock is not set in the bios. If you press F1 it gets to the windows is loading blue windows screen, clicks and goes round in circles. If you press del to run set up it just hangs at a black screen with the curser flashing?
Is it the battary?
I have toyed with moving the jumbers but would really like some help here.
Cheers  bek..... Sounds like the INTERNAL battery has died ....... Get a new one , replace the old one , then go into the bios and reset the time and date and reset with all the default settings and you should be ok......
BTW , what make and model is the pc ?

dl65  Cheers for getting back to me...don't know the make and model as it's at my mum's house...can let you know over the weekend. I paid £50 for it  from a FRIEND 18 months ago! Are battaries standard? How long do they take to fail as I still have my really only computer in the garage...will that one do just to get the clock changed? Can I get one from PC world?
The battery is inexpensive and easy to change. They usually last 5-10 YEARS, but can last even longer. Your LOCAL PC shop will have one.Bek:

Most PCs have a battery that is flat, like a watch battery, that you can easily replace (as GX1 said).  However, some PCs (older Compaq computers, for example) have them soldered to the motherboard, so you will need to solder the new one in place, if this is the case.

DocThat was an excellent engineering solution, wasn't it?  A cunning trick to sell more SOLDERING irons. Thanks Guys will go and get the hard drive and look, I think now you have mentioned it that it is a compaq, will just be my luck! Quote

Thanks Guys will go and get the hard drive and look
Good luck Quote
That was an excellent engineering solution, wasn't it?

Yeah, almost as good as Dell's early decision to make proprietary motherboards that would fry unless you used only their power supplies!

replaced the battery but the same thing happened, checksum bios clock not set, f1 to resume del to setup, setup just hangs?
Not bothered why this is happening just want to get the thing working again!! Does this mean using the windows setup discs and formatting the hard drive? Please tell me it does not!!!Is anyone out there?
Still got the same problem with checksum error...any help would be great?
:-?What model Dell? Service tag would be even better. It's a compaq not a dell :-?Sometimes getting into setup can be a bit tricky, try maniacal tapping of the Del key as soon as you turn it on.
If that fails then try the same with the F8 key after it posts to see if you can get into safe mode.

Solve : Display pic on Start Menu?

Answer»

I hate when I goof things up. But I don't think I did this. After I went into Safe Mode and went back into normal mode, my pic no longer displays on the Start MENU. I've looked for ways to correct this, but so far no luck. Can you tell me how I can get my pic back? It's in the User Accounts - just not the Windows XP SP2 Start Menu. This is probably stupid and you probably already tried, but is your start menu "classic"? Also your appearence might me the old one.No, it's the standard Windows XP start menu. And I even switched back and forth, no luck.Dilbert:

You should be able to change the picture in User Accounts in the Control Panel.

Let us KNOW if you have already tried that, or if you need help doing it.

DocI did that about three times, but it's still missing. :-/Dilbert:

Try choosing a different picture.  If that doesn't WORK, try logging on with the default Administrator account and see if you can change the picture.  If that doesn't work, either something has gone wrong with Windows or a virus or program is to blame.  Scan for viruses, uninstall any programs that were installed just before the problem AROSE.  If that doesn't work, reinstall Windows.

DocNot what Dilbert wanted to hear.  I dont use xp but the second hit in google-

Solve : abcd.exe infection?

Answer»

My computer is infected with abcd.exe.  I am running windows XP and as soon as it STARTS up, it freezes for a few minutes.  Then I have about 3 seconds until abcd.exe pops up in the processes and the computer restarts.  One time, my virus scanner (McAfee) went crazy about finding a trojan but it restarted before I could read it.  My computer will start fine in safe mode but not safe mode with networking.  THEREFORE, I can't install or download anything.  I have ran pest patrol, ad-aware and spybot with no luck.  My virus scan also did not work.  I also went into msconfig to see what was in the start up and it was not listed.  Help!  I have WAY too much on this computer to reformat.  What else can I do?I think the solution may be in http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=72574eee.. I don't have HIJACKTHIS on that computer.  Is there something I can do without it?Can you start in Safe Mode?Yes but not safe mode with networking.Start in safe mode & run some scans, AVG and Ewido would be a good start.

Solve : Is it possible to download genuine Windows??

Answer»

I've HEARD that you can download a genuine copy of windows from the Microsoft website for free if you have your number. Is this possible? Because I don't have a copy of XP on a CD, it came preinstalled on my computer and there is a sticker on the case of my computer that has the keyNo, in these cases you have to either get a copy from whoever sold you the MACHINE (the OEM) or buy another.

Great licensing huh? That's why I use Linux.   Right.  On our newest Compaq it did not come with a system restoration DVD.  We had to make one using a program installed on the hard DRIVE, and then it warned us that we should keep the DVDs in a safe place because the program would not let us make a second copy!  I suppose if a virus caused havoc before we burned the system restoration CD, we'd have to call HP.

Solve : Direct connection`?

Answer»

I have been trying on and off all week to connect 2pc's by ethernet cable(cat5). I pc is a desk top running XP pro sp1. The other is a laptop running xp pro sp2. The lap top is on a wlan with one other, and the desk top is wired to the dlinkG604t. There is no way that these two will communicate(must be married lol). Has ANYBODY GOT any IDEAS? I re-installed my xp today in the hope that it may find something...But still no talkee....But. the gun is at hand. thanksI am no network expert but I SERIOUSLY recommend upgrading the SP1 computer to SP2.That is exactly what I'm trying to do,but I want to backup my files to my laptop, and untilI can do that I dont wish to try it :-?Make sure you are connecting via crossover cable.  If not, you will not be able to transfer stuff without a router.Disable dhcp at the router and set up static ips for each computer and ensure that filesharing is enabled and the workgroup/subnet is the same for all computers.
You might need to boot to safe MODE to set up folder permissions in xp home.

Whenever I boot up, I get this>  "RUNNER ERROR"  it says Invalid Backweb Application ID "137903"

Windows etc...loads just fine, I've run avg, zonealarm, ewido on startup...so I'm confident it isn'e related to SPYWARE etc?
