Solve : Separate operating system off an external harddriv?

Answer»

Hello,
have a COMPANY LAPTOP with pretty strict corp POLICIES REGARDING software installations etc.
Can I run a separate operating system (and all it's applications) off an external harddrive without leaving any traces on the laptopm? :-? :-? :-?
Tks for your help.
ConcepiIf you could, there is STILL the possibilitiy of compromising company data if you get malware installed by accident, etc.

I would suggest getting your own laptop and you can do whatever you wish and have a clear conscience too!

Solve : "Start at startup" programs not starting up?

Answer»

Hi, I only noticed this when I can't figure out why some of tray icons no longer SHOW up. I don't know since when it happens. This occur even to newly installed programs.

e.g. ATI control PANEL tray icon, Synaptic touchpad, Widcomm Bluetooth tray icon etc.

I have checked with a StartUp manager. It shows the programs are set to start automatically at startup.

How can I fix this problem??

I'm using WindowsXP Pro SP2

Thank you.I've looked through all your problems on all the THREADS. It is becoming fairly clear you have a virus. dl65 requested a HiJackThis log in another thread - I think you would do well to do that. We'll pick through the logfile and see what hijackers you MAY have contracted.Thank you DILBERT, I've just posted the log file.

Solve : Disk Cleanup compression hangs too long!?

Answer»

I am having problems with the "disk cleanup" option. I WOULD run the disk cleanup tool in Accesories and it would hang there in Compressing Old Files status for ever.I even left it for a night while i slept and still i woke up with the computer still compressing and the status bar hadnt gone past the half way MARK. I tried browsing the forums already and cant FIND anthing that related to this particular problem. I have:

WinXp Pro
512 DDR ram
60 g HARD drive
AMD Athlon 2400+ or is that 1800+?
I THINK i do have the SP2 in it
Radeon pro PCI 9500/9700 128mb ddr G card
EPox mother board with NVidia chipset

I tried to first, defrag the hard drive and then shut down processes in the task mannager and still nothing.
common problem with winxp defrag....somepeople use norton speed disk or disk keeper lite or maybe this >http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2285.htmlWell it isnt the "Defrag" option. What site is this?Well it help correct whats going on?download it and see?Uh... MCA? This thread was made two years ago. Back in the days of Merlin_2, no less! Please don't bump threads that are that old. This guy's long gone. Quote

Most of the information is years out of date. There is no point in keeping anything over one year.

Then... why did you resurrect the thread? There's no point in keeping a thread going after one year.

Solve : Freeing up space on a CD-R?

Answer»

I was trying to burn a cd, but I had to take out two very good songs. The thing that really bugs me is that it is only like 3 seconds over the limit with the one song I want, the other song can stay out. I was wondering if there was a way, any way, to free up space on a CD-R to get like an extra minute or two out.Best way to do that is take out a not so good song and REPLACE it... Or you can ALWAYS buy a bigger CD... If you really have time, edit your songs and take out any unnecessary time at the beginning or the end that are dead seconds (no sound). I'm not sure about one or two minutes though...

EDIT: Are you trying to play these in a CD player or just TRANSFERRING them over to another computer?

FlameWell, I know I can jsut take out songs, but I wanted to KEEP them. I use Windows Media Player, and transferring them to an 80 minute CD-R.Make a second CD? :-/ I don't know if saving them in a different format would help? :-/

FlameThanks for the help. I just won't worry about the one song. Suggestions were great though. I am just gonna buy bigger cd's.That's the best solution :-/ Good luck

FlameIf you try to burn more than 70 min onto ANY CD-R, you may find you have problems playing them on normal CD players. This is because we are exceeding the original CD specification, and systems are not obliged to support this.

Compressing the audio is not an option, because normal CD players cannot uncompress. You can certainly remove SILENCE, or chop bits out if you want, but other than that, if you want more music on one disk, you have two options: use MP3/OGG Vorbis encoding and a CD player that can read such disks, or use DVD media and a player that can read DVD audio disks. Thanks for that great explanation. I just went out and bought bigger CD-R's. But now I fully understand. Thanks

Solve : Side View?

Answer»

My entire computer screen views on it's side! I come home, and the monitor is right side up, but i view the entire screen on it's side! How do I fix this??? (Windows XP)Open your Display Properties, select Settings, Advanced, and click on a tab showing your video card name. The ACTUAL panels will vary, DEPENDING on whether you have ATI, nVidia, etc. software installed. Look for a rotation feature. You probably need to change your display BACK to it's normal position there. Solve : can't open files or folders?

Answer»

[smiley=undecided.gif] I very stupidly let my friend use my computer without "limiting" his access, he will be a regular user on my comp. so I gave him his own "user acount". while setting up his own homepage, cursers, and general playing around He went into FOLDER options and changed a lot of file types which caused my folders and files to start in search instead of opening them.
It gets "better", He called a freind to help him fix it (before I got home) and evidently the friend told him to click file folder in the files type tab, then click advanced, in the edit file type he clicked New, in action he put open, and in application used to perform action he put notepad.exe and made it the DEFAULT. he did the same in a couple other file types like folders and drive.
Can anyone help me reset this so I can open things again? :-?
I use windows xp home sp2
Can you restore to a time before you let this "friend" help you out?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

The next thing would be to limit his access totally. Did the restore and it said no changes were made. His access is now limited but I still can't "open" ANYTHING unless I use the explore comand. Anyone else??? rainbowrider..... Have you TRIED this .......log in as the Admin ...... then go into control panel / folder options /"General" tab...... click Restore defaults .....then Apply and ok ......then go back into folder options again ...this time "VIEW" tab .....click on Restore defaults ....then apply and ok ......exit .then try to open a folder and see if it will open.

dl65 Thanks but that didn't do it.
I need someone who can TELL me what to put in the space when you go to control panel/ folder options/ "file types" tab/ ...highlite "file folder"... click "advanced" bar at bottom...in "actions" highlight "open"...click "new"......In the NEW ACTION box put "open" as the action.....I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO PUT IN THE BOTTOM BOX UNDER "APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION"...

Solve : Can't reload XP?

Answer»

I recently took on a computer repair job, and I am stuck. The system had stopped while the person was using it, just locked up on a blue screen. The machine would do nothing. It is a Dell Dimension 8250. After trying to get the unit to start with no success, I removed the hard drive and conected it to my computer as a slave and ran my virus program on it, and found 34 infected files, 32 of which were cleanes. (I was TOLD the owners virus program had EXPIRED). Since the owner said that there was nothing on the machine that could not be replaced, and it was about 3 years old, and seemed to be slower than it used to be, I decided to re-install XP and give the machine a fresh start.
I put the drive back into the machine and tried to FORMAT and re-install XP. The drive would stop after about 2 or 3 minutes into the project and do nothing. I then, removed the drive, connected it to my computer and my computer wouldn't start at all. (I had a similar experience previously with another Dell, and installed a new hard drive and the computer is still working fine.) So I got a brand new hard drive, tried to reinstall XP after formatting it and it quit minutes into the installation, just as the original had done. I then tried another XP disk with the same result. Next, I used the software that CAME with the drive to format it, then tried to re-install XP with the same result.
Any ideas?
Thanks for now,
Don
first of all what did the blue screen say.sound like a hardware problem
try diferent memory stick and reload.also if there are any othe components not onboard such as an internal modem try removing before reinstalling.if all does not work take ur pc to a tech near u and get a second opion.hope this helps and does not sound rude.best of luck to uI would try a Linux Live CD to see if it ran apart from Windows. Free download at www.knoppix.com

The enxt thing would be to remove the RAM and all cards and reinsert them. Dell has free diagnostics at their site, and I would also try a RAM test (free at www.memtest86.com) and see what you turn up.The problem was the video card. After changing it, I completed installing Windows, then put in the old viceo card and the same problem occurred. I think Windows was loading, and had come to a point where I had to answer something and stopped because I didn't respond.

Thanks so much,

Don
Glad you are up and running, and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Merging in Excel?

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with something in EXCEL. I don't really know what I am doing in it. I have a spread sheet with lists of account numbers and notes next to them. I want to have excel combine all of the rows of notes with the same account number.

How is it done?

So, you have multiple rows with the same account number? Right? For those rows, are the notes the same, or do they vary? Thanks for the reply. No, the notes are different. So we NEED to get all of the notes COMBINED, in one cell with the corresponding account number.

Thanks!

MacHow many records/rows are in this Excel file? I don't know of a way to automate this, and doing it MANUALLY will be a tedious procedure if you have a large number of records.

To manually do this, you could copy the notes for each account to Notepad. Then when you have all the notes for a particular account consolidated in Notepad, copy them back to Excel. Ya, I have goten to that point. I have almost 600 accounts with about 20,000 rows. Yuck. Thanks anyway!I presume you're sorting those records to get all the records for a particular account listed together. I will mention the Concatenate function, in case that might help. If you're not familiar with it, take a look in Excel's Help. You can also combine text from different cells by using the & symbol. For example: A1 contains Good and B1 contains bye. To make C1 display Goodbye, TYPE =A1&B1 in C1.

Solve : Anyone experience this restart problem?

Answer»

I can click on the RESTART button in windows xp and it will log off save settings and then it starts to shutdown with the black screen, so it has started to restart. At that point it will not restart, I see the red led hard light has activity for a few seconds and then nothing. The power supply it STILL on but it will not restart . I have to push the restart button on front of the computer for it to restart. Then it will restart and reloads windows until the next TIME I click on restart and the same thing happens. Could it be a power supply issue?? Or any thoughts.Has it always been this way? Some specifics on the equipment and the age would be helpful. Has anything changed lately? What else doesn't work right?Just noticed it the other day. Nothing much has changed. Its one I built. Soyo ultra kt333 board 512 memory. Everything else is working fine. Had a hp 1200 printer change to a cammon pixma mp450. It is a little strange, so I work on it a little to try and figure it out.No excursions inside the case for anything?I checked all connections to be sure all is pluged in good. I"m at a loss. I thought about power supply, because something I read about it having to release for a restart . (The first STEP of POST is the testing of the Power Supply to ensure that it is turned on and that it releases its reset signal.) Is that possible maybe?only way to fully CHECK what problem is try another power supply if it still does not reboot.or try a repair it may be a windows problemI GOT A NEW 450WAT POWER SUPPLY. That seems to have solved the problem. Thanks for the replys in this matter.

Solve : Load up loop thing going on?

Answer»

Um, ok really big problem. Once and a while for the past week my computer has just decided to shut down in the middle of something (usually Sims 2) and this blue screen with white writing comes up saying something about the computer shutting down and doing some kind of memory dump I think. I don't know exactly what. Before that, I've been having a problem with the machine randomly restarting for the past few months (I already updated my drivers to fix this, but it didn't really HELP). Now when I turn on my computer, it goes onto a screen with a countdown from 30 asking me whether I want to start up from safe mode, start normally, or revert to last known working setting. Whatever one I pick, it goes to the windows is starting up screen. then, all of the sudden, the computer hum gets a little quieter, and then it goes back to the gateway screen, then back to the sceen asking me how i want to start up the computer. What the heck is going on?! I'm sorry this is really long, but I don't know what's important and what's not. BTW virus, malware, and spyware scans during the last few months found no major problems. Also btw, I am a computer idiot and will likely understand little to no computer jargon used. Any help appreciated. Quote

and this blue screen with white writing comes up saying something about the computer shutting down and doing some kind of memory dump I think.

With these kind of specifics and your stated limitations, there may be little we can do. Is there a shop nearby you can take it to? Maybe a geeky friend could come over for a little bit for some coffee or dinnerr and take a look? lol, yeah that was my next course of action if this didn't work out. sry i can't offer more, but i can't really access any more specs. thanks for your helpGood luck and please let us know what it was. i have the same problem although mine happens with no warning, one good thing is though i have a good camera phone and it froze after the memory dump one day so i know exactly what it says,

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these STEPS:

Check to be sure you have the adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver UPDATES. Try CHANGING video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to resolve or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode

Solve : Backing up outlook and iTunes !!!!?

Answer»

Hey guys need help with something im formatting my hard drive and i need to know how to BACK up my information in Micro Soft outlook.

and also is it possible to back up iTunes Play list and Stare Ratings I works hard to rate my music and add it to play list I wouldn’t WANT to lose that after I format.

Your help would be widely appreciated.
It's your CHOICE how to do this. If you have a CD burner, this will be much easier. For Outlook, just select File -> Export. Export everything you want. Save the files to a CD. With Itunes, you would just take your songs that you have now, so they stay protected, and then for the ratings, you can Export them too I think. File -> Export Library. Test these suggestions on another computer before we erase anything THOUGH

Solve : icons not working?

Answer» HI, it's me yet again. My brother in law is RUNNING windows xp on a laptop. He has recently set up another user account as he wants a separate account for work use. On the new account that he has created, his icons on his desktop do not respond. He can still run the programs from start-programs, it's just that his desktop shortcuts dont work. We tried putting a brand new icon/shortcut onto his desktop and that wouldnt open either. He is only having problems on this account. We tried changing his account from administrator to limited and vice versa but to no avail. I checked his mouse settings through control panel but everything seems OK. He seems able to double left CLICK to open other items- just not the ones on his desktop. Any ideas? How were these desktop icons created? Was the executable program dragged to the desktop and the "Create Shortcut Here" option selected? If long directory names are in play, are they quoted? If the path names were manually typed, are they correct?

If everything seems fine it may be time to start checking your system for malware. Start with virus and sypware scans.

Let us know.

Good luck. 8-)THANKS for your reply. Just spoke to him now and everything seems to have started working again all by itself. :-?

Solve : Outgoing Email stuck in Outbox of Ms Outlook?

Answer»

Help - I did something stupid by trying to send a HUGE email attachment from my MS Outllook. It seems to be just perpetually "sending" but I dont think it's going anywhere. When I right click on it and try to delete it, nothing happens. How in the world do I can this thing? ANYONE know any tricks? How huge are we talking? If you have a modem/router with connection LEDs, you will probably see them flashing, indicating that data is being transmitted. UNFORTUNATELY Outlook doesn't give you any kind of progress indicator.

Sending large files by email is quite inefficient. Partly because as part of the process, the files are automaticially made much larger by a process called uuencoding. If you want to share large files, better choices are FTP, web hosting, PEER to peer, etc. Personally, I would avoid sending files larger than 1 or 2MB.

Now to your problem: the simplest WAY round this problem; unplug your modem or router. Restart your computer. Load up Outlook. You should get a TIMEOUT error within a few minutes. You should then be able to delete the message from your outbox.

Solve : "Remember my password on this computer"?

Answer»

I have Windows XP home; while changing over from AOL to VerizonDSL I inadvertently answered "yes" to the question "Do you want your password to be remembered on this computer?" I'd RATHER TYPE in my password each time I need to, but it just pops up as soon as I log in with my user name. Verizon was unable to help me, so I think it probably is a Windows issue. Thanks for any help you can GIVE me.This MIGHT be one of those passwords that's stored in the *.pwl files. Search for them under c:\Windows, or under C:\Documents and Settings. You can safely DELETE them. Solve : Autocomplete in searches?

I need to know how to clear the search history (system files/folders search) on my computer. It has the autocomplete feature, and I want this info cleared. I need to hide this info from another user. I am using Windows Millenniun. Not a REAL computer expert, so I could use some help.
Any advice? One solution WOULD be to download CCleaner, install it, scan your system with it and have it remove that stuff. Look closely at the various CCleaner options before using it to scan. Download the Basic version; it's the same as the FULL version except for the Yahoo toolbar they BUNDLED with the full version. I have XP Pro, this may still get you there on ME.

Open an IE page. FIND "Tools" at the top of the page. It goes like this Tools/Internet Options/Content/Auto Complete/check mark the boxes to suit your wants on saving the info/Clear Forms/(and passwords if you choose)/OK.

Solve : Forwarding email with several files to open?

Answer»

Hi
When I get a email that has been sent several times and it has several files to open and I want to send it to someone else, how can I fix it so they don't have to open all the files ?
I am not real good with puters so I need a easy reply . Thanks Bev :-?Did the original message contain attachment(s)? Are you SAYING that subsequent recipients have to open the message to all previous recipent(s) before they can get to the ATTACHMENTS? Are you using Outlook Express or what?I'm not familiar with netzero. Do you view your mail via web browser or with Outlook Express or with some other email client/SOFTWARE?That doesn't answer the question. I see on http://www.netzero.net/ that their email service includes POP and web email. POP mail can be downloaded to your computer using Outlook Express, Outlook, or other POP email software if you set up your email account in the software on your computer. So, the question remains, Do you view your mail via web browser or with Outlook Express or with some other email client/software?

If you don't understand this, we're not likely to get anywhere with this issue. Quote

Are you meaning, for instance that it has about 60 e-mail addresses attached to it? And it takes opening about 3 - 5 pages before you see what was ACTUALLY sent to you?

And what soybean is asking would be helpfull. I am guessing from what your reply was that you get your mail from Net-Zero's home page?

I can only really speak for using Outlook Express. Maybe you have something like it on Net-Zero. From the final page you open, click "forward" from it. Then hold down the left click button on the mouse and drag it over the extra print you want gone (more e-mail addresses, etc), it will be highlighted. Then just hit the delete KEY on your keyboard. Then send it.

Solve : my MSword documents won't print!?

Answer»

Suddenly every time I try to print a Word document i'll only get a "save as" window come up and ONLY the option to save the document as an "microsoft imaging document", (*.mdi )? But no print.
What have I done and how can I get to PRINTING my documents again?.
It is the same for all office documents. They all open as proper MS entities ie: word, excel etc.
I have tried all right mouse clicks to no avail. Im TOTALLY flummoxed. Can anyone please advise?Go to CONTROL Panel, PRINTERS and Faxes, and see what's shown as default printer. My hunch is it's the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. Change the default printer there to your actual printer. Exit and test printing from Word again. Did that fix it?Thank you SOYBEAN, you solved the problem straight away! Solve : XP wont load. Looping at loading screen. HELP.?

Answer»

I'm having serious problems.

I re-installed XP yesterday from the backup disk because I was having problems with drivers etc...
And everything went back to normal.

And this morning, windows is failing to load alltogether. Ive tried booting up the windows XP disk and re-installing windows that way. And no change.

I have a dell inspiron 6000.
It gets the the DELL screen (big DELL in blue) (with the loading bar), it loads, then the screen goes blank, and loops right back to the screen again. It does this over and over again, i have no idea what to do

Dell themselves are useless, cant get ahold of anyone, wont even let me register online

Any help from anyone would be appreciated, it is VITAL that i get the laptop up and running and back to normal as SOON as possible, even if it MEANS having to wipe everything from the hard disk.I don't suppose you have a full XP disk and I suppose that no floppy drive is available?
If data isn't an issue, try a destructive restore.I have the 'Reinstallation CD' 'Windows XP Home Edition SP2'
And no floppy drive.
Is there any way i can resolve this problem with the reinstallation cd?

I'd rather keep my 10 gigs of music if i could... but if its not possible then how do i do a destructive restore?
I have a Dell that does the same thing, and I even sprung for an XP Home Edition disk. Everything was fine until yesterday and it started that being caught in the start up screen. It goes to Windows Startup and just sits there. I went to a restore this morning, about two weeks old and finally got it to work. Whats up with this? I even have a new 80Gb HD. And check this out...I tried to reload windows with the disk and go an ERROR CODE 7 message SOMEBODY HELP ME! Boot from the restore disk and the options, if available, should laid out in front of you. Try a non-destructive restore at first and if that doesn't work, try a destructive restore.
Didn't you have any documentation/manuals with this machine?

KnarlyBill, please start your own thread. Hijacking existing threads only serves to confuse everyone involved.I saw no restore options. Only the options for certain drive formatting before install.
I chose the option that formatted the drive and deleted all the files on it before continuing. Its formatting now. I'l let you know if i have any success.

100% probability of success, if the format works and you have an XP install disk. I refuse to deal with Dell, HP, Compaq and a few other "big name boxes" so I'm a little out of touch with their restore setups etc. Quote

100% probability of success, if the format works and you have an XP install disk.

IM happy to hear that. Its still formatting. I'l post when its done.Still formatting? I suspect a damaged hard drive! No, its done. Success!

BUT, I have no drivers. So I have no sound, no video (my graphics card aint running), and i cant connect VIA my WIRELESS card COS it has no driver.... what do I do?You can download and install ALL of the correct drivers from the Dell site. Burn to CD and install on the laptop.

Solve : The most bizzare problem I've ever had...?

Answer»

Hi, This is my first post, thanks for reading...
I have a serious problem which is very peculiar, but serious, I'm not kidding.
My computer (win XP, pentium 4 1.8, 1gb RAM) started to ignore files with names STARTING with the letter Q.
First, it was my Quicktime player, it stopped working. then I tried to re-install it, but the browser wouldn't save it (saying it has been moved) then I saved it under a different file name and it worked but won't install any file that starts with Q. I did an EXPERIMENT, I created a txt file on my desktop and tried to rename it to Q, but windows didn't let me! and then, it was impossible to delete that file ALTOGETHER! (the error MESSAGE was "cannot read from the source file or disk")
I ran Kasperski anti virus, ad aware and norton win doctor and disk doctor but there were no apparent errors in any of them.
This is embarrassing, I've been fixing my own computer problems for YEARS and years but now I'm completely clueless...

Thanks for reading again. Please carry out the procedures in this post and post a logfile. Please zip the log and attach it instead of posting the text if at all possible. Thank you.

Solve : Browser/Home page?

Answer»

I have just got Broadband and the BT Broadband Browser has the same address as the
Microsoft INTERNET Explorer Browser I like to use. Is it normal to have 2 browsers with
different buttons and wording at the top to have the same address.
If they had different addresses I could enter the MIE one in the BT Broadband browser and
ask it to use it as my home page. I can't because it has the same address.
Yahoo! UK & Ireland -Microsoft Internet Explorer (The one I like which gives me access to O/Express)
BT Yahoo Browser -UK & Ireland (which does not)
both have the same address yahoo.uk.com
Is this not strange ?

Best wishes

DaveI suspect that the BT browser is just a "branded" version of IE. You're better off using >Firefox<, to be honest, because IE is rather unsafe and insecure.

But to answer your QUESTION, IE (either real or branded) can be SET to ANY home page. On the menu, see Tools-->Internet Options. The BT browser is in fact Internet Explorer in disguise. To be honest, I would dump it.
Firefox and Mozilla etc cannot be used in certain circumstances!Hi Backdated,

I do dump it and would GO on line using Internet Explorer alone which I have given the page I
want to open at BUT I like to know when and whan not I am connected to the internet. If I click the
Bt Broadband icon and go to the page I don't want I get an icon at the bottom right of the
desktop which I can right click and tell it to exit the internet. If I could get an icon at that place
whilst just using Internet Explorer allowing me to right click to exit the internet I would be happy.
Can you help on that one ?
Hi Backdated,

I have anorther problem with Bt Broadband now. Even when I am logged off and just have Internet Explorer with my home page ok, when I click on an Email
notification of a reply at this forum it opens the bloody Bt Browser calling it my home page browser (which it is not) with the answer.
Get me out of that one PLEASE.

Best wishes

This stupid thing opens up like EVERY 10-15 mins it's real annoying it pops up for about 1 sec then disapears it can be a pain when watching movies becuase it closes my full screen! i managed to GET a screenshot of it it only opens up on my dashboard...

Any idea what it is? Spyware, Trojan? I scanned my computer for both though Useing ZoneAlarm, Spybot, And Ad-Aware SE Pro also i did a scan on my c drive for Untitled and it came up with 2 results maybe one of these is the problem?

And here is a list of my procceses any of these spyware, virus, trojan, or something bad for my comp?

Well, I don't think anyone's going to review your process list for you. A good source of INFO on processes running in your computer is http://www.answersthatwork.com/. From the home page, click on Task List, then search for a process by name.

Your second screen print shows a folder named PCHealth in the Windows folder. I see that the file type for that item is GIF, an image file. Why don't you open/view it to see whether it's the small icon appearing on your taskbar?

I suggest you also run CCleaner. The download page for it is at http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp. The Standard Build has the Yahoo toolbar bundled with it. If you don't want that, download the Basic version. It's the same except for the toolbar.dude u really gotta stop having so many tasks running. what happens is u have so many running u forget what each of them does. such as this instance. if u knew what tasks do what u would have immediately known which task is causing the problem. ne way thats my rant. i had some spare time on my hands so i went through ur tasks list and here are some of the suspicios ones...

nmsrvc.exe \ these 2 are from network magic might wanna be cautious
nmapp.exe /
pnroutsv.exe
wmiprvse.exe
svchost.exe ---> u had 6 instances of this running (this is also one of microsofts
SECURITY leaks, u can go to their website and download tools to see if your svchost.exe is actually microsoft's svchost.exe or a virus)That's a fairly lean and clean TaskList. However, that means little.
SVCHost is not a security leak, it's a holder for grouped services and it's an essential process. Multiple instances runnning is quite normal.
Network Magic is a home network manager. Although it may be to those of us who have some knowledge of networking deemed unnecessary, it's safe.
The pnroutsv.exe task belongs to Pure Networks router manager and is safe.
The wmiprvse.exe task is the WMI provider and is necessary.

Zintos, you may want to look at this thread.

If you're worried about infection, carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Hey,

I've experience this before. The main reason for this is because you have applications running in the background that updates themselves or access the internet without you having to do anything. If you don't want these application to do these actions, i would suggest to open the application, go into its properties and configure it so it doesn't update or access internet without you doing it yourself.

An example of programs that update itself are anti-virus software, music software, quick time, etc.

As discussed earlier, I would search to see what each running application on your list is and then stop the applications that are useless or not needed for running.

Hope it helps!

Solve : rich text format in one large file?

Answer»

can someone please help me? I hope this is the right forum. my typesetter is complaining because I SENT her a 290 PAGE document in rich text format, and she said they were 290 single files. she wants me to SEND that document, (manuscript), in one large file. How do I do that? I have windows xp. I think she has a macintosh. any advice would be greatly appreciated. :-?

AtreyhuI don't have a clue but try this:

Open the .rtf file with Wordpad then save the file in .txt format.

Good luckEek - don't do that! Your paragraph breaks will be COMPLETELY screwed up, and any formatting you want to retain (advisory to your typesetter) will be lost.

Please advise: what program are you composing your document in? What program is your typesetter using? As an aside to this - If you regularly move data between a Windows and a MAC box, Stuffit, the dé facto MAC archiver, is available in Win32 flavour.thank you for your replies. robpomeroy, I used microsoft windows to write the document. and my typesetter has a macintosh. thanks for any advice.I think Rob wanted to know what actual programs were used on both machines.hello

Solve : Login Scripts and Printers in XP Pro?

Answer»

Sorry Guys, new to the site and forums in general.

I hope you can help, Just to give you the back ground, I have 20 MS XP Pro networked PCs with a multi-user base all with local profiles with two networked shared Printers \\itroom14\colour and \\itroom18\HPLaser.

I would like all users of only these 20 PC’s that have been given the computer name as ITRoomn where ‘n’ is the INCREMENTAL number (1 to 20) to connect to these shared devices.

It is possible to connect to these printers as administrator but they do not appear in the printers folder for other users.

The issue is that it needs to be automated on LOGIN as there is approximately a user base across the 20 pc’s in excess of 150 users. I gather there is a registry hack AVAILABLE, but I have been unsuccessful in LOCATING it. Does any one know of a work around as I am new to batch file CREATION and Shell scripts.

Also is there a good way of reducing the amount of profiles stored on the pc as any work/files that need to be saved are normally stored on the server. The effect of these multiple profiles is that is slows the pcs down considerably at login.

Solve : Sluggish Performance Creeping Now Crawling...?

Answer»

Hi,

Newbie here. This question is probably old but I didn't find in the search so bear with me if you've heard it before. I've got a PC and laptop configured with a D-Link router and both are starting to show serious performance degradation. Both computers are less than a year old and run at over 2GHz.

Bootup time is increasing and now takes several minutes. Windows take 30 seconds to open on occasion. The LAG is ESPECIALLY noticeable on my desktop PC.

Is there a step-by-step guide to improving performance? I know a LOT of background programs can slow things down but I'm not sure which can be turned off in startup. A software program that automatically takes care of this would be great. Is there any shareware/freeware that you can recommend? Any other ideas?

The display computers in the stores run fast fast fast and I get frustrated coming home and having to go have a cigarette (or two) while I'm booting up.

Thanks!
MarkCarry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Santa Claus, I won't disagree that there are better defrag programs than the standard Windows Defragmenter, but I do disagree that using the standard Windows Defragmenter would be the cause of the sluggish performance he's experiencing. I use the standard Windows Defragmenter and I definitely don't have such sluggish performance. He's got other issues, most likely spyware infestation, which Backdated addressed.Diskeeper 10 Professional is just the full version of the default XP offering, and I don't know of any other program which will adjust the Master File Tables, if that needs doing, and very often it does need doing. If the master file tables are too small then - f r a g m e n t a t i o n - increases.

You see how much longer it takes to read - f r a g m e n t a t i o n - ?

That is how much longer it takes the processor.

It costs all of 12 packs of cigarettes.

New users should get the full picture.

I.E. From 10 seconds to open an application down to 1 second.

Then he should clean up the registry with TuneUP Utilities and run the registry optimiser.

MS should have included DK 10 Pro in both XP Home and XP Professional, then there wouldn't be so many file corruption problems, as any industry professional will tell you.

My 1GHz computer takes 45 seconds to reach the desktop from the POST beep and takes 10 seconds to shut down using the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.Your problem is bootup performance, Microsoft Bootvis do just that, download the program and open it. click File, new, next boot and driver trace, then click OK, Bootvis goes to work and your computer will reboot when trace FINISHES, once logged on Bootvis will display graphs of you Bootup sequence. Now you select Trace, Optimise system. Bootvis goes to work again and reboots your computer and once logged in, Bootvis takes a few minutes to finish and hey you have your system optimised for bootup.

CigarmanIf I were a betting man, I'd put a lot of money on Defrag, Diskeeper and BootVis having no effect whatsoever in this case.

I'm surprised to see the Diskeeper etc posts still here after all this time. The phantom deleter must be off sick! I wouldn't click on anything that you linked to MAC! Quote

I'm feeling better.
Me too! Thanks for the advice. I didn't have a spyware/adware problem. But the Absolute Startup software came in handy. It was easy to use and cut my startup time in half.
Bootvis was awfully complicated for me. I didn't even try to run it. I also defragmented and ran disc cleanup. All in all a fairly good improvement for little work and no expensive software purchases.

"Absolute Startup software ..." Apparently, you found that one on your own, since no one mentioned it in their replies. You said "no expensive software purchases" but you did not mean no software purchases or were you just using Absolute Startup on the trial basis?

Another tool I suggest you add to your computer system toolkit is CCleaner. They recently added a link to the home page for "Click here for a Quick Tour...". It's a good primer for new users. CCleaner's standard download includes the Yahoo toolbar but you can elect not to install that during the CCleaner installation. Or, download the Basic version, which is the same as the Standard, without the toolbar. How much longer do we have to put up with Macs psychotic behaviour?

Solve : XP Reboots gives video device driver error?

Answer» HI all,
Recently changed monitors. Old one was acting faulty - screen would warp and colors would blend. A neighbor gave me a compaq 7500 monitor that he wasn't using. New monitor seemed to work fine without any changes in drivers. I then purchased DSL through my local phone company. (Qwest) They sent a modem and I went through the installation steps connecting the modem to my firewire card. (They give the option of that or USB.) Ever since then my computer will 'randomly' reboot. I'll be working on whatever and BAM it does a sudden restart. Sometimes it happens after working fine for 3 hours and sometimes it does it within 5 minutes of the last time. It boots up fine after that and gives the message "Windows has recoverd from a serious error." and asks if I want to send an error report to microsoft.

When I sent the report, the first 10 or so times, it told me that it was an unknown error related to a device driver. Now, about the last 6 or so times it tells me its caused by a driver error related to display. It recommended updating my drivers. Which I did. (I found the driver for compaq 7500 and installed it, previously it was using a 'plug and play' driver for the monitor) Microsoft also recommended setting 'hardware acceleration' to 'none' and to 'enable write combining' to 'unchecked'. (Under the 'display' properties through control panel.) Which I did. I also individually checked for updates on all my drivers (including the firewire card) and they were all good.

Guess what? It still does the sudden reboot. I checked with my DSL provider and they told me that since the modem is hooked up through firewire connection that no drivers were installed for it.

I scaned for viruses and spyware using the links I found here and at another site and found none.

It seems to do it more often when I am downloading a file but it does not exclusively happen when doing that. I am at wits end about this.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thank you!In general, you don't need monitor drivers.
Unfortunately, here in the UK, DSL modems, particularly the Sagems, cause all sorts of problems - Sudden reboots being a major one. Try a Google for your modem and see if any other users have had problems.
I'm surprised at the statement about no drivers being required. What make and model etc is this modem?

If you're using XP, entering shutdown -a in the Start>Run box will disable automatic shutdown on error.
Also, the Event Viewer may pinpoint something.Thanks.

What is Event Viewer? Also, if I shutdown the automatic reboot will that effect other things, or cause a major problem?Automatic shutdown is another stupid "feature" introduced by Microsoft. The only reason for it as far as I can see is to hide the fact that XP still bsods!

Entering eventvwr.msc in the Start>Run box will bring up the Event Viewer console which lists all major events, both good and bad. Have a look under the "System" and "Application" tabs for any errors (White X in a red circle) that may correspond to the times of your crashes.OK,
First, I made a mistake, it was not connected to the firewire card it was through the LAN connection. I uninstalled and reinstalled the qwest modem using the USB port. I was on for about 20 minutes and it rebooted.

I had unchecked the 'reset at error' as suggested and I got the blue screen of death.
The error was reported as "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"

Since then, I have been on and working for about 3 hours and have had no problem, yet.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can find out what is going on?
It is appreciated.
Thanks. Please report any error messages in full detail.
Have you checked the Event Viewer?OK
the bsod says
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
If this is the fist time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. It this screen appears again, follow these steps."
Then it lists checking recently installed soft and hard ware.
then
"Technical information
*** STOP: 0X00000050 (OXF7FFFFF8, 0X00000000, 0X8054A832, 0X00000000)"

I checked the results under eventvwr.msc
UNder system at that time I got
"Source: System Error
Cat 102
Event ID 1005
User N/A
Error Cache 10000050 parameter 1 f7fffff8 parameter 2 00000000 paramater 3 8054a832 parameter 4 00000000"

I hope this helps youl to help me.
Thanks again.Neither Microsoft or EventID have any knowledge of this error and I haven't come ACROSS it before so I'll have to do some digging.
I'm not going to be around much for the next few days so if you can put Google etc to work and post anything interesting you may find, it might help.

Have you updated your graphics card driver?yep
one of the first things I did was update all drivers individually as it indicated a device driver
I think there was only 1 that needed update and it was related to USB

At this point I'm leaning towards a hardware error.

Does memory sometimes go bad?

Thanks again for responding.I'm thinking harware myself but let's persevere a little first.
Do not use MS updates for updating drivers! Where possible, download drivers straight from the vendors support area. If you don't know what graphics card is installed, right click the desktop, and from the context MENU, select Properties>Settings>Advanced>Adapter. Post back with what you have and I'll point you to a driver for it.NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrate GPU (Microsoft Corp.)

Chip Type: GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC
Memory: 64 MB
Adapter String: GeForce MX Integrated GPU
Bios Information : Version 4.1F.00.08.09

Thanks againA little bit of an update.
A friend of a friend came over and checked everything out for me. The error only happens on one account(mine) and NEVER on the other administrator account (wife's).
This friend of a friend thought it was due to a 'conflict' with some software with a driver or software with software, but couldn't take the time to narrow it down any more than that. What was odd is that the same software is installed everywhere, isn't it?
We created a new administrator account and the problem seems to be gone with the new account.
I appreciated the help but this seems like an 'inelegant' solution to me. I'm not being ungrateful for the assistance, I just worry about it cropping up again.
Anyway, now when I play the 'neverwinter nights' game on the new account it goes extremely slow. It's basically unplayable. I can't seem to figure out why?
Any suggestions? You'll find the Nvidia ForceWare 8 drivers here.
Start by uninstalling the existing drivers and then installing this set.Thanks.

On the Driver Installation Hints page from that link you gave me it says I should

"Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly."

I'm running AVG and Nod-32. Is it really ok to shut them both off? And, really stupid question here, how do I shut them off?You have just pinpointed a major problem with your system!
Never run two real time AV applications!!!!
NOD32 is very good, so uninstall AVG completely and your problems will most likely disappear. Overall performance will see a boost too.

It would still be a good idea to download and install the drivers though.

Solve : Programs Not Fully Loading?

Answer»

I just noticed this yesterday...

I tried to launch AZUREUS, the little HD light spun and spun, nothing happened.

So I tried again. Same results.

So I tried to reboot..... Took FOREVER to shut down (I may have actually had to force it down... I did this a few times don't remember which time I had to force it).

Tried to launch again, nothing - but it did show it was running in Task Manager-Processes.

So I rebooted, ran SpyBot S&D, ran Ad-Aware, ran TweakNow RegCleaner.

I went through all running processes, and all were legit - no malware.

But still same problem.

So I ran Norton GoBack, took it back a day, and it was fine.

Now today, same problem - but with CCleaner not loading. In fact, it is showing in Task Manager - Applications as "Not Responding".

Also, when I hit "Shut Down" last night for the last time, it hung on closing "CCapp.exe", which it will do from time to time. I have fixed that before.

But I hit "End Now", hit the shower, and still hadn't begun the rest of the shut down process - all the icons were still on screen, etc.

Spring allergies???

I've run all the standard diagnostics, right?Use CCleaner as opposed to TweakNow RegCleaner. It's much better.
Carry out hard drive diagnostic tests.
Carry out memory diagnostic checks.
Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.I think you have that response loaded as a macro!

What specific HD and memory diagnostics do you suggest?

Looking at your highlighted post, I have already done the control panel check, deleted temps, run an AV (Norton), ran Spybot and Ad-Aware (and I use FF, not IE).

The problem this morning was trying to run CCleaner... So I CAN'T run that before posting the Hijack This.

Let me know which diagnostics, and I will get cracking.

Thanks
Norton is not a reliable AV utility. Even if it was, it's always wise to crosscheck regularly. The Kaspersky online scanner is excellent but doesn't provide fixes. Panda seems to be a bit temperamental but Trend is OK.

For hard drive diagnostics, check your hard drive manufacturers support area - Most vendors SUPPLY suitable tools.
For memory testing, Memtest86 is as good as any and a bootable CD ISO is available.
Bootable ISO image
Bootable diskette imageWell, I was up til 3 running all those programs... They kept hanging things up, so I'd reboot, wait, run, blahblahblahblah

The online (Karpinksy?) virus scanner found four viruses and I panicked - but they were all in the "Norton Quarantine" DIRECTORIES... So I presume they were viruses that NAV had REMOVED in the past.

The malware scanners found only one thing that was NOT found by Spybot or Ad-Aware - a keylogger I had installed just to see if those two could find a keylogger a while back.

Other than that, every test CAME back clean.

Here is the Hijack This.

One thing that is bugging me is how much my HD light is on... It is flashing like mad now, and FF is the only program actively being used.... And this is the only page open, and it's loaded.

I'm gonna reboot in Safe now and run defrag.

Solve : The page cannot be displayed?

Answer»

I have tried to change settings. This is a brand new computer. I do not know exactly what I am doing. Could someone please help me. When I pull up web pages I sometimes get the page cannot be displayed. It appears that this is on advertisements only. I can view the rest of the page but just not certain areas. Any help is greatly appreciated. THANK you very much in advance. I am USING Windows XP SP2 and I do have Windows Firewall.
If you're only missing ads, I wouldn't complain.

Do you ever appear to be missing key elements of web pages? Just curious. It appears that most of the key elements are showing. I know that I probably should not complain to much however it just annoying to see that come on a web page. Before you jump to the conclusion that it has something to do with your computer, try viewing the same websites on another computer, ideally at the same time you're trying to view them on your computer. You could ALSO TELL us the NAME of one or more sites where this happens so that we can look at it and see how it displays.

The advertising elements you observe to be missing may be coming from a separate web server from the web server used for the main website you're viewing. That/those server(s) may be experiencing problems causing downtime and that may be the crux of this; if so, it has nothing to do with your computer.

Solve : General Problems?!?

Answer»

Hello all

Firstly I apologise if I have put this in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure which section to make this post in!

Ok, here is the deal. A few weeks ago I got some strange occurences when connected to the internet. For example, when I was offline I could open Microsoft Word, open and old or new documents and work on them with no PROBLEM. However, when online, Word will only opened in safe mode and opening a document took forever.. This is still happening...

But this did not only happen with Word, other programs such as Adobe Acrobat and sometimes even Windows Media player had the same problem. ..and they still do..

I figured it would be some kind of spyware problem, so I downloaded and installed AdAware and SpywareBlaster and I was able to scan with AdAware (found a few baddies and wiped them out) but now both of these programs freeze whether I'm offline OR online...

Above all that, now my MSN Messenger doesn't let me sign on, yet I am able to log on with Windows Messenger...

Plus I still have all the aforementioned problems...

Is it a bigger problem than I thought?

I need help!

Thank you all in advance!SpywareBlaster is a preventative tool so it will do nothing if you're already infected. Ad-Aware is mainly aimed at adware so that's not at all effective on it's own.
Carry out the procedures LISTED in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Thank you for your reply.

I FOLLOWED your link and when I get to the stage of scanning with Panda, IE freezes when I try to install Active X..

I guess I have found the root of my problem?

Any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks again! There may be several reasons for this behaviour. Set Internet EXPLORERS security to default levels and try again. If it doesn't work, carry on with the REST of the procedure and we'll come back to it.

Solve : Windows on old HD?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
I built a computer for Christmas and im having a problem. When ever im in a game like World of Warcraft my computer gets a blue screen pop up and then crashes (I think that blue screen is called the blue screen of death correct me if im wrong). Im thinking this is happening because Im using an old 10G HD that has my window installed on it. I have a 160gb HD as my SLAVE, I was wondering if ther was any way i could put windows in the 160gb harddrive without losing any data on both harddrives. I would download it in the 169GB HD but i got the windows XP upgrade not the real installation.

Thanks,
Gamer4lyf3Hello Gamer4lyf3,
You can clone your old 10GB HDD to your new 160 GB. But at first you need to create a 10 GB partition on the 160 GB HDD.
Acronis True Image will automatically transfer everything from one HDD to another without losing any data, and 160GB HDD will boot as master correctly.
It's a tested expedient! The manufacturer of your new hard drive may well have free CLONING software on offer at it's support area.

However, I suspect that this won't allieviate the bsod which is probably due to overheating.
If you upgraded from a previous installation rather than formatted and started from scratch, your problems are likely to LIE there.
To use an upgrade XP CD for a full and clean installation, you only need a former OS installation CD as proof of ownership. During the setup routine, XP will ask you to insert the old OS CD as a check.Ok thanks for the help so far i made shure to boost my Powersupply fan speed and i coppied the HDD and put it on its own Partition. I then tried to boot from the 160gb HD but it said i was missing a fie, so i changed it to boot back from the 10gb HDD and looked at the partition and the 10gb HDD and the 10gb HDD had more space used up then the new partition. Well im going to keep trying Thanks in advance. Quote

How exactly did you copy it?

I think this is due to how it was copied. I am correct that you have no Windows CD?

Solve : cant share printer?

Answer»

What should I do. I have gone through everything that I can think of. Here is my setup to help.

1). computer #1 in my brothers room(has wireless router and modem attached to his pc)
2). computer #2 in my room(connected to the router by ethernet cable)
3). computer #3 in the basement(connected to the router by wireless card)
4). PRINTER connected to computer#3 by a usb cable.

What am I doing wrong. Everytime I try to print from computer#2(where I'm typin now), it says CONNECTION problem. What gives I tell ya, what gives! Can computer #1 print to the printer? Or is just #2 the only one having this issue?actually, I redid the setup

pc#2 is the main pc with modem and router
pc#3 connected to router with wireless card
pc#1 is connected to router with ethernet cable

I uninstalled the printer from all computers. I'm starting over. And the reason I relocated the router is because my brother went to florida and he has a password on his pc and i can't get on. So his pc is kinda out of the picture RIGHT now.If you really want on your brothers machine, for some reason. Go here and follow the steps,

http://www.grape-info.com/doc/win2000srv/security/ntpasswd.html

you can reset his password WITHOUT knowing it. It would be easier to just ask him though and get permission, he could always change it later.

Why did you change the location of the router just because he has a password protected machine?

Well, let us know if you resolve the issue or need assitance.

Mystik1982:
If my brother had tampered with my machine without my permission, he would find himself in BIG trouble! I'm not sure if the link to that bootdisk is a good idea either.
Please think before posting.Did you ever managed to share the printer? I note that your printer is connectec by usb but are you running any NT machines? They are not usb compatible.

Backdated, I believe that's why I put this in my post. I was not by any means agreeing with him gaining unauthorized access to his brothers machine. However the program could be used with his brothers consent.

Also the bootdisk on that link is safe and has been tested. I've used it a lot on clients machines that I need to repair that no longer remember their passwords.

problem fixed, we used network magic and it fixed the problem(don't know why) but it WORKED. And now I can print and share files. Peace.

Solve : Computer Help Program (free)?

There is a new program available on download.com

it is 100% free.

Just write you computer problem or question and it will be submitted to computer service companies in your area. You will receive help via e-mail.

Hope this helps, you can look at the program here, it is called "Computer Company Help Program"

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/spyware-cleaners/downloadcom-congratulates-self-for-filtering-spyware-101399.phpI've had this argument before. It's still one of the most infected sites on the net.
Until very recently, well after that declaration was made, a certain P2P application was available which contained over 20 different infection sources.
I have no reason to believe that CNet have cleaned up their act to any degree over this issue and would advise punters to avoid it.
There are many clean alternatives.

"Every time a new file is submitted to the CNET Download.com site through Upload.com, our editors download, install, and scan the program using up to three industry-standard anti-spyware tools: currently these include Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and PC-Tools Spyware Doctor".

Let's look at that statement.
Their editors test the software? What do these editors know about malware?
How are these tools set up and under what conditions?
Up to three? So that's just the one then.
Spyware tools? I really hope that they mean anti spyware tools, whatever they may be. Very little in the way of spyware is in the wild - I SEE hundreds of infected MACHINES in the COURSE of a month and very few contain what can actually be termed as spyware.
The more astute here will note that no mention of general malware, trojans, ADWARE, hijackers or viri is made.

Some disclaimer that turned out to be!

Solve : Log On Problems?

Answer»

I was cleaning up my computer and I deleted some FILES by mistake and now when I log on I am not able to. It says Login Interfase DLL msgina.dll failed to load. Then it says try re-installing it. The problem is I am not able to log on. I have tried rebooting in SAFE mode and all that jazz but nothing has worked. Before this happens it says application cant start because SYSTEM32.DLL was not FOUND.

Solve : IE icon?

Answer»

The IE icon is faulty... I tried everything, all programs... all tricks... but it is still corrupt... What can I do? Where can I find the corrupt registry entry? Programs apparently won't find it. Of course I also tried to change the icon in folder options, with Microangelo... It just won't do it... :-?
Any help WOULD be greatly APPRECIATED!
JohnIf you're using IE6,(didn't say) my say would be UNINSTALL/reinstall explorer. If you uninstall your system is supposed to revert to the previous version, then re-install 6. Have you run anti-virus, spyware, etc programs? You may just have a bug somewhere.
If you do uninstall, afterwards go to the programs folder, look for Inernet Explorer folder, open & should be an installer there. If it was deleted too then just go to MS UPDATES & download there.
Someone else may know other options, but if ya don't get any better ideas hope I helped.Read in here.

Solve : Linksys driver problems?

Answer»

Hi i was wondering if anybody knows a SITE that has a windows xp x64 driver for this network ADAPTER:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416826820&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

- thanks -SashWell, you were on Linksys' site. They are the manufacturer of your device. If they don't have a 64-bit driver, I DOUBT if one exists yet. Maybe you'll have to look for hardware and drivers from D-Link, Netgear, etc.

Edit: I just discovered a site called PlanetAMD64 which is focused on 64-bit OS RUNNING on AMD processors. They have forum, with a section on http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showforum=17. Might be worth checking out. Here's a post SPECIFICALLY on your issue: http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=19561.

Solve : Reformatting and PCMCIA CD-ROM drive: Disaster?

Answer»

First of all, I apologize if this is the wrong place for
this… If it is, could someone please give me a push in the
right direction?

Okay, I'm feeling exceptionally stupid here. A friend asked
me to REFORMAT her older laptop and reinstall Win98. I
carefully backed up all of her DATA, then formatted the
C drive. I have the Win98SE OS CD.

I had it set to boot with CD-ROM support, only now I'm
getting the message that it does not find a CD drive!
The CD-ROM drive is an external PCMCIA drive. I tried
installing the PCMCIA driver and the CD-ROM driver,
but the system still insists that there is no CD-ROM drive.
Apparently it is not seeing the PCMCIA slot..?

I have an old external parallel port CD drive, so I
thought I'd try that, but the system won't acknowledge
it either.

Can someone help an idiot? I really hate to tell my friend
that I'm too dumb to do this favor for her, and then give her
back a non-working laptop! :-/

-----
Thanks! The laptop obviously don't see the PCMCIA or the Parellel port, is there anything you can modify in the bios? USUALLY an option to you set the bootup order, e.g. Hdd, floppy or CDRom. If it don't support CD bootup, here are your options:
1. install DOS and install the PCM driver to DOS for CD drive, then insert your Win98 CD to drive and instal windows, check your autoexec.bat and config.sys to make the CD ROM is installed.
2. Remove the HDD and place it to a laptop that supports CD ROM bootup and install your win98 from there, some driver will not be compatible unless the laptop is identical, but worth a try at least to you back to windows and you can sort out the TEETHING problems once in windows.

let me know how you got on.

CigarmanThank you so much for the reply, Cigarman!

Unfortunately, there appears to be another problem... and it's a baddie. When I first turn the wee beastie on, there's a messae "Press F1 for IBM BIOS utility".

Only problem is F1 doesn't work! The key appears to be broken.

Is there any other way to get into the BIOS on a Thinkpad?Nope, that's it! Okay..... now what? I don't have an extra laptop to move the HD to and that may not work anyway....

Please tell me I did not ruin my friend's Thinkpad!Do you have a floppy drive that you can get working? What is the exact model number etc of this Thinkpad?

Solve : Huge problem! Please help?

Answer»

Every time I open a program (the last month): I get this (I translated it from dutch, so perhaps a few other words can be in the english version, but most are correct):

Can anybody helps me please, because it drives me crazy. I even can open a program anymore without SEEING this message, but after I click on ok, the program works.

P.S.: FORMATTING my drive is really not an option, backups neither (because it is already a month ago that it started, system restore won't work EITHER)
