Solve : WPA.DBL question?

Answer»

What program should be listed to open this file?  I was trying a trial program and it took over the dbl extension and now I can't get it back to the original?WPA.DBL is not a file that's "opened" by the user.  It's a system file that HOLDS the hardware configuration information and activation state of the current Windows XP installation.  For more info, SEE WPA.DBL--The Keeper of the KeysOk the program adobe audition SET this to open as a audio file, I uninstalled it and the association was still there.  I went in and changed it to notepad.  Shouldn't it still be set to something, attached is what it says now.

I think I fixed it, I removed it in the file folder, file types and now it says open with Unknown application instead of notepadFiletypes don't NEED to be associated with a program.

Solve : Data on CD lost using drag-to-disc! Please Help!!?

Answer»

Hi!

Can You Help Me!??

I have just lost 90% of files I had on a CD when the final session I tried to add went wrong. I just use DRAG-to-disc in XP, never had a problem before and all previous files on this disc were written using the same method. I believe this file may have been too large for the remaining space on the disc; when I tried to put a tenth Winzip file on the disc, now another eight files have mysteriously vanished from the disc! I cannot see the file names at all. The disc isnt a rewritable.

What has happened and is there any way at all to recover the information? I have been working on this data for eight months and to LOSE it all in one hit like this is devastating; it includes written works I will never be able to replace.

I have tried searching, exploring, opening etc to no avail.

please, if you can help me I am most grateful!

 :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?

chad.....  I have read your post over and over and am not clear on the problem.....   You said....... Quote

I have just lost 90% of files I had on a CD when the final session I tried to add went wrong.
So If I read you ......all of the files were burnt onto a cd ...and somehow you lost 90% of them......   Then you say...... Quote
when I tried to put a tenth Winzip file on the disc, now another eight files have mysteriously vanished from the disc! I cannot see the file names at all. The disc isnt a rewritable.
...... Would it be safe to say that you thought you were using a cd-rw when it was really a cd-r.

Please clarify your post

dl65  Hi

No, I knew I was using a CR-R, and the CD is a CD-R. I had burnt the files to the CD one at a time over several months, they were supposedly there permamently on a CD-R but since I recieved this error message in XP, I havent had access or been able to even see these files listed on the disc. I STILL have access to the first ever file written, but not the next 8 files. How has the ability to access these files changed, on a CD-R?

does this clarify? I have tried Isobuster as well, it can't even read the data, it simply stops RESPONDING.

chad  :-?

Chad....sorry to be so long getting back ...but I was just trying to recreate your issue ...... I just burnt some data onto a cd-r then added another folder and burnt that and did that until the cd was almost full and then the last one put it over the top ........ Nero told me that the file size was too large ......
Were all your files zipped ?

dl65
What burning software were you using? You may be able to recover data using a "session viewer".
If that fails, Jufsofts BadCopy Pro is a very useful tool for retrieving data from corrupted CDs.i'm assuming that since you use the term drag-to-disk that you are using roxio software. have you tried using their scandisk utility?
once in a while a problem could also be because the cd writer is going bad or windows is having a problem reading the drive.  if it's an external drive, you could try removing it, rebooting, rebooting again and then adding it back. sometimes after using a different drive, reseating it,  or using a different computer lets you then retrieve the files. even removing & re-installing the software or using a different program to burn cd's will give you access to the files.i recommend that if you can get to the files at all, copy them off the disk & put them somewhere else, preferable not with drag to disk. burn them permanently to a new cd.can the command prompt see the files?
(hit start>run>type in "cmd" and hit enter>type in "cd D:\"(where D is your CD-rom drive)>type in "dir"

Solve : strange noise from the box?

Answer»

Hi,

I've got a problem here and wonder if anyone may be able to help me here. This morning i heard a noise coming out from my PC box. Sounds like emergency alarm siren from the box. I then restarted it hoping the noise would go away. And it worked (the noise stops). However, up until now, i'm still puzzled by it thinking how on earth would a pc desktop produce such a noise like that. This is my first TIME. What i've also done is check the event by GOING to event viewer. There are 3 items on the list.
Note: i only focused on DATE between 15/3 and 16/3 because any other days before today were fine.
1. Application - seem normal except got a warning on 16/3 i.e today from MySQL
2. security - None
3. System - seems fine(just information)

I don't know what's caused it. so i hope someone would be able to help me.

Thank you in advanceAre any alarms set in your BIOS?Thank you BackDated for your reply.

> Are any alarms set in your BIOS?

hmm... not sure, how do i go to BIOS again?

Have you had any experience of that before? COZ i want to know what that noise INDICATES (whether software or hardware problems).

Thank you in advance
Pressing the Delete, F1, F2, F10 or a handful of other keys, depending on type will get you into the BIOS as a rule.
Yes I have experienced it and it's usually down to poor sensors and/or parameters being set too tightly.Hi Backdated,

Ok, i can try it but before i do it. I think in some ways, it's good to have the alarm on as it tells there is somethng unusual happening rather than nothing at all. Am i right? what do you suggest me to do?

And, how to fix it then? should i just restart the computer or there is a better way of handling this situation?

Thank youMost sensors leave a lot to be desired and can very soon become a pita!
The system will shut down to protect itself if critical levels are approached.

Solve : Unidentified subdirectory and files?

Answer»

I have a relatively new computer running windows XP professional, but only now I began to put my
hard drive in order. I found a subdirectory labled "Surdiosx" that I can not connect with any program
I have installed. It contains a few hundred mbytes of cache files. I don't know what program created
or needs these files or if I need them at all. I would realy like to get rid of them If I can.

WELKuchean:

A Google turned up nothing.

Do you know how to check the Windows msconfig program and search the Windows regedit for surdiosx?

DocNoNow Yes.

Someone just had to throw corn in the right direction.
Neither regedit or msconfig show anything.
There are 4342 files in the cache dating from 10/21/05 to 11/11/05.
There are long stretches of files only minutes apart. The whole thing
looks like some sort of activity log, but I can't open any of the files to look.
There doesn't seem to ba any trace of the program that created them however.

WEL kuchean
Can you tell us ...exactly where is this file residing ? Is it inside another folder ?

dl65  I went to the Microsoft KnowledgeBase with no results. I'm posting it on another forum to see if some of my friends there might have a clue. Get back when I hear something!Do you have adequate firewall protection. A little bit of research on "surdi" reveals that this may be an FXP taggers handle.
Turn on "Show Hidden Files", turn off "Hide Extensions...." and "Hide Protected...." from the Control Panel>Folder Options>View applet. Open the folder via a DOS prompt and type dir /s >c:\dir.txt followed by enter. Post the contents of c:\dir.txt here.

After doing that, use Winzip or similar to archive the whole folder. You can now delete the existing folder.Surdiosx is in the programs subdirectory.
For now I have compressed it to free up some space
Disfeeper reports the files as being the most fragmented on my
drive but can't access them.

WELKuchean:

Please list the file extensions for the files in the directory in question, and one of us will look them up to see what program is associated with them.  Alternately, you can type the ftype command in the CMD window:

==================================================================

C:\>ftype /?
Displays or modifies file types used in file extension associations

FTYPE [fileType[=[openCommandString]]]

fileType  Specifies the file type to examine or change
openCommandString Specifies the open command to use when launching files
                    of this type.

Type FTYPE without parameters to display the current file types that
have open command strings defined.  FTYPE is invoked with just a file
type, it displays the current open command string for that file type.
Specify nothing for the open command string and the FTYPE command will
delete the open command string for the file type.  Within an open
command string %0 or %1 are substituted with the file name being
launched through the assocation.  %* gets all the parameters and %2
gets the 1st parameter, %3 the second, etc.  %~n gets all the remaining
parameters starting with the nth parameter, where n may be between 2 and 9,
inclusive.  For example:

    ASSOC .pl=PerlScript
    FTYPE PerlScript=perl.exe %1 %*

would allow you to invoke a Perl script as follows:

    script.pl 1 2 3

If you want to eliminate the need to type the extensions, then do the
following:

    set PATHEXT=.pl;%PATHEXT%

and the script could be invoked as follows:

    script 1 2 3

=================================================================

Best regards,
Doc
If this is an established tagger using a hijacked machine for FXP'ing, somewhere along the line, the folders will have illegal or reserved names like "par" or illegal characters like "&" etc.
The only way I know how to delete these folders besides formatting is to connect using FlashFXP or similar and remove them through that. Even then, you have to know what you're doing.

Somewhere in the Windows part of the forum, I posted a couple of links to firewall/port testers. Are any of your ports open and if so, which ones? The Surdiosx folder contains 7 .log files going from AI_05-11-2005.log to AI_11-11-2005.log. there is a data.bin file and FOUR thousand+ files without extensions in a cache folder.

Maybe I'm making too much of a deal of this, but it bothers me.

WELIt would bother me too! I've seen similarly named logs before and they were all related to Apropos infections.
The DATES would suggest a past infection but just in case, carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.I grabbed the bull by the, um, HORNS and deleted the whole mess.
Actually I tried to delete it. I was able to empty the Surdiosx folder, but when I tried to
delete the folder itself, I was told by the computer that the folder was in use!?

Well anyway I gained needed real estate on my drive and I can easily see if anything puts files back
in the folder.

WELThere might be hidden files or folders in there that are in use. Just a thought.  You really need to check this system out! There is a link to "Pocket Killbox" within thelast link I gave you. That will rid you of your folder.

For your own sake, you need to follow what I said in that last post very carefully. You may well be unwittingly involved in very serious criminal activity. Try telling a court that you didn't know!

Solve : Hard Drive Reset?

Answer»

Im having a problem wit a rootkit and have tried everything will it still be in my computer if i COMPLETELY erase it and if not how do i completely erase it to factory DEFAULTS i think u have to press an f key at STARTUP or something
thanks for the helpHi Dylan - you don't provide a lot of information about your system, so I don't have a lot to go on -- but often times computers will come with a "restore" CD-ROM which is bootable, and helps you restore your system to factory defaults. Many times, this includes a reformat feature on the disk. And, since it's a read-only CD, your rootkit won't be able to infect it.

Do you have such a CD?

Why not just remove the rootkit? There are now quite a few tools available such as F-Secures Blacklight, SysInternals RootkitRevealer and Greatis' UnhackMe.

Virtually any decent AV product should now have provision for dealing with rootkits. Quote

Solve : Auto lock, unlock and shutdown?

Answer»

Hi Experts,

When we want to lock the computer we do the following:
Ctrl Alt Del
(A dialog box appears)
Lock computer

When we want to unlock the computer we do the following:
Ctrl Alt Del
(A dialog box appears)
Key in password
Enter

Is there any possibility in the registry (or somewhere) of XP Professional menu to:
1.      automate the above,
2.      automate a shutdown at specified time?

Thanks.
1) What do you want to automate? Lock? Well, you can use also the windows key+L (the L key). To unlock, you have to press ctrl+alt+del and enter the username and password (username, in case you want to LOG off the user which locked the computer). You can't automate this -- but you can disable the lock option (why do you want to do it?). Are you in a domain? Then talk to network administrator/system administrator. It's your home computer? Then use the simple logon options, without passwords.
A simple way to lock the computer it's to set the computer to lock when ENTERS in screen saver mode.

2) For shutdown at a specified time: you may create a bat file, which should contain a LINE LIKE:
shutdown -s -f -t 60
(see shutdown command in windows)
And then, add a new scheduled task which runs that bat file at the specified time.Winlogo key + L will initiate FAST User Switchng on a multi user machine.

Solve : shutdown after a program exits?

Answer»

Hi;

In XP, I want to make a batch file to run a particular program at startup and once that program has closed, I want to shutdown the system. I tried just putting those two commands in a batch file in the startup but it just run thriugh and shutdown the computer. I want it to wait until the program closes then run shut down.

Can someone help me out?

ThanksCanoad:

In Windows XP, you may add the SHUTDOWN command to the batch file:

shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No ARGS.......................Display this message (same as -?)
-i................................Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l................................Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
        -s...............................Shutdown the computer
        -r...............................Shutdown and restart the computer
        -a...............................Abort a system shutdown
        -m \\computername.....Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx...........................Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
        -c "comment"..............Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f................................Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [p]:xx:yy............The reason code for the shutdown
                                u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)

DocIf anyone is interested, the above command in a batch file is a good way to shutdown windows with one click of the mouse (instead of the three it annoyingly takes to shutdown Windows).  Just put the shortcut to the batch file in the Quick Launch toolbar.  The shutdown command is only available in Windows XP, however.

DocDoc4Christ;

I have tried it in a batch file but unfortunetly it does not wait for the previous program to exit. It just shuts down immediately. I need to have sometype of exit code from the previous program(also in the batch file) that I can check and when it does exit then run the shutdown. Do you know of anything LIKE that, that I can check for?

Thanks
You have to make PROVISION for a return code or "errorlevel" as was known in DOS, ie:
if errorlevel 0 then shutdown /blah

Please give details of what PROGRAMS etc.Hi;

Its a satellite PCI card and the name of the program is called MY THEATER. I have it and the shutdown program in my startup folder. But I do not want to run the shutdown until I exit MY theather.

Thanks

Solve : "Windows did not start successfully"?

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

I keep getting this error and I can't get into safe mode or any of the other options. I get a quick flash of a blue screen then it goes back to the error screen  :-/

The computer os is WinXP. I'm not too sure about the rest of it's info since it's not my computer. After having the message does the PC power its self down ?This will require some in depth troubleshooting. You're going to need the owners permission and we're going to need more info such as what happened LEADING up to this. Did you download or install anything for instance?I restarts over and over, trying to load windows but ends up returning to the error screen.

I was told that the power cord got knocked out while trying to plug in a printer. This isn't the first time this error happened, but it always started as normal when selected on the screen.Toodles:

Try this:

Turn the computer off, wait 5 seconds, and turn it back on.

While it is starting, keep pressing the F8 key.

When you see the Windows startup MENU (it has a black background with white text) use the down arrow key on your keyboard to highlight "Last Known Good Configuration" and press the Enter key.

Windows will try to restore the settings to what they were the last time you successfully started your computer.

Let us know how it goes,
DocThe windows start up menu is what I keep getting and what the computer keeps restarting to.

Start in safe mode.
Safe mode with networking.
Safe mode with command prompt.
Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked).
Start Windows normally.

And none of these options work  :-? It just restarts back to this same screen. There's a blue screen that shows first, but it goes away so quick and I can't see what it says.As I said earlier, this will require some in-depth troubleshooting knowledge. It will also require a full XP CD as opposed to a restore CD plus the administrator PASSWORD (If set).
It's also very doubtful that it can be solved without a hands on presence.

You could try unpluging all peripherals such as printers ETC and going for Safe Mode.Unplugging printers and things didn't work.

I can't get into dos or anything. It just keeps going to that black "Windows did not start successfully" screen. Quote

Backdated is right on the money.  You will need your Windows XP CD to even attempt to fix the problem (that is, if it is not cased by hardware failure).

If you have your Windows XP CD, try a repair installation:

Solve : XP Home OEM?

Answer»

Am a little confused about the various types of XP cd's.  I have the OEM version which came with the pc.  Is it not possible to load this version on another pc and what happens if the pc on which it was  preloaded gives up the ghost :-?

I understand, or at least think I do, that it would not be possible to activate the OEM version on a second pc in order to receive updates etc and that the O.S. would probably be crippled after the 30-day period of grace has expired, but is there no way a NEW pc can be loaded from the OEM disc then activated to replace the original :-?

TIA Quote

Not necessarily.  One EXAMPLE: i have a Gateway OEM CD that refuses to install Windows on any other computer but the one that came with the CD.  I since discovered that the License Agreement for the CD indicates that i am not allowed to install it on any other computer.  Another example: i have HP OEM CDs that will install Windows only on Compaq and HP PCs (HP owns Compaq).  I'm not sure if Gateway OEM CDs will allow you to install Windows on eMachines PCs, even though Gateway now owns eMachines.

If you can install Windows XP on a different computer, you likely will be unable to activate it using the product key you have, as the activation program will return an error message that the product key you used is already being used by another customer.  You may call MICROSOFT and get a new product key, but be sure to have your credit card ready!

That's why some of us like to call the corporation Micro$oft!

As the Doc says, it's all down to the EULA for the version that you have and in general, you should avoid systems on which the EULA "LOCKS" the software to the machine. Thanks you.  Seems I must now save my pennies for the full Retail version of XP..

There are programs out there that will unlock the XP software for you...Hey Bulwark, does Chepstow ring any bells?

Solve : Slowed down to a crawl - should I reformat?

Answer»

Excuse a newbie on this, but I approach reformatting and re-installing XP HOME with some trepidation.
Over the past couple of weeks my PC has slowed down to a crawl - I mean opening applications or starting programs is like click the mouse then go for lunch
I've run your recommended programs for getting rid of nasties and I'm fairly certain that the computer is clean of all viruses/spyware/adware etc. Unused programs have been uninstalled, the hard drive defragged, the registry CLEANED and optimized but all with no effect.
So my last hope is a reformat and re-install of XP - it's an OEM version and I have the disc and key plus I've backed-up almost everything on DVD and an external hard drive.
I REALISE it's like asking 'how long is a PIECE of string' but would/might(?) this solve my problem

XP Home
Sempron 2300
1G RAM
2 x 80G Hard DrivesA reinstallation probably would speed things up as long as no hardware faults are present. If you don't likethe idea, carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.Well, as I thought, the PC seems clean
The results of Hijack this are attached.
Is there any way I can determine hardware faults? as it looks as if a reformat/re-install is the only solution at the momentI can see from this logfile that the procedures that I pointed to have not been carried out so we don't know if any viruses are present.
How many anti virus programs and firewalls are installed?

You can fix the following but before doing so, move Hijackthis to it's own unique folder as already instructed.

Solve : XP installation freeze?

Answer»

I'm trying to upgrade an older PC to run XP, but the installation process hangs. I'm booting from the XP CD, and the setup loads all files until windows file system NTFS. Then the screen goes blank with the cursor blinking in the upper lefthand corner. I can see there is some activity on the CD, the hard disk and on the keyboard, but after a short while the there is no activity, and what remains is the blinking cursor.

I have reformatted the hard disk so all traces of the old win98 se should be gone. I have TRIED to upgrade the BIOS, but getting an error message from the awdflash program; the program file's part number does not match with your system.

Any suggestions?

The system is:
- epox 8kta3 via133 socketA motherboard
- AMD duron 800 MHz processor
- 256 Mb RAM
- Nvidia Reference AGP GeForce2 MX400 video
- Western Digital 40Gb 7200 rpm HDCheck the CD for scratches it could be a corrupted CD.

Your PC should be able to run it no probs with those specs.

R0SSThe system should install it just fine but in reality, 512Meg of RAM is the minimum requirement to run XP comfortably, particularly on an older machine.
When installing, are you deleting all partitions first?
Does it install OK if you choose FAT32? You can always convert to NTFS later.
Have you checked the hard drive to any in-depth level?
Is the CD a copy or scratched or dirty?I have run fdisk from a win98 se boot floppy to delete all partitions. Also tried with fat32 formatting and WITHOUT formatting only the fdisk partition setup. I haven't checked the HD in-depth, but it boots ok when fat32 formatted.

The CD looks ok, but I'll check it again.

Thanks for the suggestions! The CD..... Is it a copy or a legitimate retail version? It's important that we know. The CD is an OEM version, NorwegianWas it supplied ith the machine that you're trying to install it on?No, but bought in the same shop. They are bankrupt.

It was installed on an another computer and it worked ok. This computer has stopped working.

I know that the OEM version can only be installed on one computer, but what I'm checking is if this computer can be upgraded using the same CD. If successful I will buy another license. If not I'll have to buy another computer. The way my theory works is that it should be possible to do the installation from the CD, but not the REGISTRATION. Are there different OEM versions?

The CD can't be written to from the old installation and the PC is not connected to Internet so there cannot be a check on whether this is a valid registration.

Is this a valid set of thoughts, or am I too much into saving money? ;-)It's not a matter of licencing etc at this stage - It's more a matter of how the installation has been "hacked" by the OEM.
Some OEM copies are tied to one model or manufacturer, some will install on a few different but similar machines and some are restriction free except for the EULA constraints.

Usually however, a warning along the lines of "This copy of xxx was not designed to be used on this machine" is issued beoe the installer quits.

arrg i INSTALLED a game then i played it and got bored so i uninstalled it but it screwed up somehow and the main game files are gone but windows (XP home)  still THINKS its installed and its still in my add\remove programs thing. when i try to install the game again it tries to uninstall again and as usual fails :-? :-? :-? :-? :-?Have you tried removing the values in the registry? That might clear it up.Also if you have CCcleaner it has a nifty add/remove utility that removes leftover entries in the Windows add/remove.when stuuf has been left in add/remove for me i click remove and it says can't be found WOULD you like to remove from add/remove list and it goes fine. although i have not seen that happen since i used win 98 so it might not do the same for xp.How long ago was it that you tried to remove the file yourself? Did you DELETE some of these files?

Solve : gpedit.msc not working?

Answer»

hi,
I'm using Windows XP PROFESSIONAL SP2. When I tried to run the gpedit.msc it shows me a dialog with informations as:

Snap-in failed to initialize
Name: GROUP Policy
CLSID:{8FC0B734-A0E1-11D1-A7D3-0000F87571E3}

and when I press Ok button it opens a window with informations like Snap-in Creation Failed. The snap-in is not created, it may not be installed properly.

so what can i do. I think it was working properly before and afraid if its just because I use registry repair pro very frequently.

Ho hum.pardon!! :-/yeeeeeeeeeeeeesss these registry things can be really bad they messed my comp up real bad and when i logges onto my user i GOT the "blue screen of death" eg:A problem has occured and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.
FILE_SYSTEM...............hi,
I wonder if it can be installed again and run without having to format and reinstall the whole windows xp.
regards,
Jay :-?The cleaner(s) that you run may have backup files.
Does XPS System Restore go back far enough?

It may be that your registry cleaner(s) didn't cause the damage but as soon as I see one mentioned, I know that the chances of successfully troubleshooting a fault are drastically REDUCED. I am far from alone in this assumption.

Solve : Create new...?

Answer»

OK. I'm running Windows XP SP2. I know that right-clicking and going to "New" will ALLOW me to create files of various types. However, there's a few file types that were on the list of my last PC that aren't here on this one. For example, no ENTRY for creating HTML files. No JavaScripts, no VBScripts. Is there a way to add to this list, either in a wizard or manually? You need to install the programs that made those.
On your previous COMPUTER, you probably INSTALLED something like an HTML editor, and it was added to the list.

(also, you might be able to find a folder in your windows folder with those shortcuts. ) Quote

You need to install the programs that made those.
On your previous computer, you probably installed something like an HTML editor, and it was added to the list.

I have two HTML editors, FrontPage and HTML-Kit.
I have Visual Studio, which can create VBScripts and JavaScripts and XML files.

I don't see why Windows can't see that.

Quote
(also, you might be able to find a folder in your windows folder with those shortcuts. )

You know, I've been looking through it, thinking that it has to be there somewhere. I've done searches but found nothing. I'll keep looking.Update: As a temporary fix, I've written batch files to create these files. It'll work for now, but it'd be cool to not need 4 batch files (one for JavaScript, one for VBScript, one for HTML and one fo XML!)Probably everything you ever wanted to know about the "Create New...." CONTEXT menu item can be found here.

Solve : Windows media mp3?

Answer»

Hi
I have cd with all different tracks on it. I want to put it on my mp3 player so i ripped it using windows media player. The problem being is it just says track 1 track 2 ect. I want it to name the ARTISTS but i have forgot how to make it do this. Can anyone help.

Thanks.Have you tried something like Tag&Rename Pro?If it is a compilation you have BOUGHT, you should be able to get the names by clicking find album info on the top righthand corner of the 'rip' tab in wmp. If it is a cd-r, i usually type in the info myself.Hi, I had similar problem and solved it by doing the following: When in WMP go to tools/options/privacy setting and ensure the relevant boxes are ticked in the enhanced playback and device settings i.e 'display media information from the INTERNET' and 'update music files by retrieving media info from the internet'. Make sure you are logged onto internet when using WMP. Good Luck.

Solve : "create key set" what is this and how do I do it???

Answer» HI all,
I have been trying to download a Credential Manager driver for my FINGERPRINT sensor from HP (link sent to me by their technical team) and the installation is almost complete then it says "Setup error. Access is denied. CUSTOM ACTION: Create Key Set. The installation cannot be continued" It then proceeds to DELETE the whole credential manager program so I have to re-download that before I can sort out the driver I need. Is this something to do with registry keys - I have heard of them but don't really know what they are. Is there any way of finding out what key set I need to create and how to do it?? Thanks in hopeful advance!!

Solve : Odd Boot Situation?

Answer»

Due to problems with the hardware I have got my hard disk installed as a USB drive and due to the age of the machine have to boot from floppy into the USB device.

I have so FAR managed to get access to the USB device but when I try to start Win98 SE 2 errors appear (one about XMS and another about registry files). The system then halts with a blue screen saying "VFAT Initialization Error".

It is a Thinkpad 600 if that makes any difference.

Any suggestions?

Is it possible to acquire a NEW hard drive and BACK it on to there?

You can BUY USB hard drives now.

R0SSI don't think you quite understood the situation...

Normal HDD - Broken (Not fixable).
USB HDD - OK (NEW!!!)

Due to age of BIOS boot process is:

FLOPPY (MSDOS) -> USB HDD (Win98SE)

The errors occur when EXECUTING the WIN command.Who said this is going to work? Has it ever worked this way on that machine?Without a lot of hard work (Even then, it's not guaranteed), you need to boot from the USB device. If your system doesn't support this, forget it and buy a new hard drive.I can't seem to make it boot from USB in it's current state.

I can get into the USB drive via MSDOS though so the drive is not faulty.

My only hardware solution seems to be to buy a HDD for my ultrabay.

If anybody knows if a BIOS update will allow USB boot then feel free to let me know...I am not aware that a ThinkPad of that era can boot from a USB drive.

Solve : Windows and Linux networking?

I would like to network the two for file sharing.

I have no IDEA where to START  :-/

Could anyone help? any suggetions? maybe you have the same setup. If so, could you tell me how you did it.
I did a quick search on google, but unfortunately, I could'nt find what I was looking for. What do you want to do?  If you want to share FILES between the two computers, you need Samba.  Google it.There's a fairly decent SMB readme here.Thanx Backdated, good link.

yeah, I know about SAMBA, I THOUGHT this was a little too difficult for me at present.... I'm new to Linux.

Thanx anyway. It's not quite as hard as it seems; we can talk you through it.  Do you have Samba installed on your Linux box?  Are you able to locate and edit smb.conf? If you download the Xandros community edition Samba will be set up automatically. If you are sticking with RedHat you need to learn about Samba in a little more detail anyway.

Solve : Help with reseting my computer please?

Answer»

Hi, i have loads of errors etc on my computer which i dont have the time or patience to deal with, so i have DECIDED to wipe the hard disk clean, but i dont have my windows xp recovery cd? Is there any way i can return my computer to its original state without the recovery disk? I have backed up everything i need.
I looked at the HP recovery console and it says there is an option to do a destructive recovery, but im not sure if that will REINSTALL the operating system?

Any help appreciated.

PS. Computer details

HP Pavilion t.450.uk
Windows Xp Home edition SP2
2.80 GHz
120Gb Hard drive
Intel Pentium 4
512Mb DDRThe "destructive recovery" should return your computer to it's original state but you may still need that CD. Read the HP help files.Ok thanks for the reply, will get back to you after i have read up on the hp website.
Jus wondering, is it possible to download the xp recovery console and put it onto a disk, or is this seen as copyright infringement etc?I'm not quite sure what you mean.Well, is it possible to download whatever is contained on the windows xp recovery disk that is given with new computers, and burn it onto a normal cd-r to use? or do i need a proper one?

In that case would it be possibly to borrow a windows x recovery disk from a friend?
I'm not sure if HP supply recovery disks and if they do, I suspect there would be a charge.
Recovery CDs are specific to the machine that they were supplied with so unless your friends machine is exactly the same as yours, do not use his disks.
If you don't have the recovery CDs and you can't source them, then your only option is to buy a copy of XP Pro or Home.ok thanks for the advice, i seem to remember following the destructive recovery path before, and if i remember rightly, it resulted in my computer booting up and getting a black screen saying NTLDR not found or something along those lines, so my dad called someone out while i was out to fix it.

Sent an e-mail to hp, waiting on a reply.Personally, I would bite the bullet and buy a copy of XP Pro. Cheap copies can be sourced from eBay etc but be careful what you're buying and ensure that it is an original CD with a genuine COA.
Of course, this would mean that you would also have to invest in new programs such as an office suite as well unless you are prepared to use free open source programs.ok, took the destructive recovery route, WORKED out a treat.
Turns out, hp computers are not shipped with recovery cds, there is a partition on the hard disk. unwittingly, this is what i eventually used to format the computer.

One last problem, does anyone know where i can get a manual download of serivce PACK 2 please?
Windows update is temperamental on my pc.

Thanks alot for all your help. A quick google search turns up many places to get SP2. Here's one.

Solve : Multiple device problems with XP but not knoppix?

Answer»

My friend's Compaq Presario laptop has been partially resurrected a few weeks after a spilled drink accident.

At this point, the computer works with Knoppix (Ethernet, firewire, USB), but not with XP.  Specifically, XP Device Manager shows several devices that cannot start:

                        PCI bus/device/function            Error Code
Network Adapters
-1394 Net Adapter                                    n/a            Code 10
-Realtek Ethernet NIC                              2,3,1            Code 10
-Netgear Cardbus Adapter                        3,0,0            Code 10

Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-mtrRate                                          n/a            Code 24
-Serial                                          n/a            Code 24

System Devices
-TI UltraMedia Firmware Loader Device            2,4,2            Code 10

Universal System Bus Controllers
-NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller            2,7,0            Code 10
-NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller            2,7,1            Code 10
-Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller      2,7,2            Code 10

(sorry for the misaligned columns)

In fact, if I do not disable the 1394 Net Adapter, the XP boot screen freezes for 8 minutes (HDD LED is off) before finally booting XP!  I actually thought XP would not boot, but fortuitously left the "frozen" computer on and came back.  If I disable the 1394 Net Adapter, XP boots with typical times.  This is very reproducible.

I've tried System Restore, SELECTIVE booting with msconfig, and I've also tried reinstalling the system drivers using the HP Driver Recovery CD, all to no avail.

I've even considered doing an XP repair install or even a total reinstall.  However, XP Setup from the CD ***freezes*** at the "Setup is Starting Windows".  This is before any install or recovery CONSOLE option appears.  I've tried a different XP setup CD, but same problem.

The RAM has been checked with memtest86, and the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. has been checked with smartctl.

These sympotoms seem to suggest a hardware problem, but remember, knoppix works fine!  I can't just tell my friend to switch to Linux, because he has no time to install or learn Linux.

Do the list of malfunctioning devices and error codes suggest what the problem with the laptop may be?  Why would XP Setup freeze like this?  Please post your opinions, and thanks for reading!Code 10:
If the device has a FailReasonString value in its hardware key, that string appears as the error message. The driver or enumerator puts this registry string value there. If there is no FailReasonString in the hardware key, you simply receive the rather unhelpful:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Code 24:
The device does not appear to be PRESENT. The problem could be bad hardware, or a new driver might be needed. Devices stay in this state if they have been prepared for removal. After you remove the device, this error disappears.

It depends on whether it was Coke, coffee or whisky that was spilled.

Seriously though, I've seen Coke etc eat through a CIRCUIT board in no time. There is also the sugary residues of other drinks to consider. In other words, the machine needs to be fully dismantled and thouroughly cleaned.Yes, in all Code 10 devices, the error message is the unhelpful "This device cannot start".  I don't know how to clean the innards of a laptop, so if that is the final solution, I will have to return the laptop as is to my friend.  The CIRCUMSTANCES and symptoms point to a hardware problem, but then why would it work under knoppix? You could try disabling all the hardware (USB, Serial, Sound, NET, etc...) from the Bios and see if Windows can be reloaded then.  After reenable the devices & see what happens.  Most likely there is suger on something.  In Knoppix (which I don't use) but do the drivers just load or does everything work perfectly like nothing bad has happened.  Can you actually play sound, use usb/firewire and browse the Internet? The BIOS is the most limited one I've ever seen.  There is no option to disable hardware.  The only options are boot order, boot passwords, parallel port mode, and video memory, language support.  That's it.  I tried uninstalling the devices in windows and they just reappeared with the same probs on the next startup.

To answer your other question, in knoppix, everything works as if nothing happened.  The network, USB, firewire all tested.  Very strange, huh?

Solve : vertical stripes and system crash?

Answer»

I just recently purchased a NEW Compaq computer, it has a athalon 64 processor, and things were going fine with it for about a week. Then I downloaded an exe file that when I opened it, a black window came up that looked like a cmd window then disappeared. I then tried deleting the file, but I kept getting a pop up that said it was in use, but there was no visible applications that I could tell that was using it. Then the computer would crash and show either vertical stripes or a solid color on the screen and I would have to re-boot.A friend helped me go into DOS mode to remove the file and that SEEMED to work. Then we installed a second hard drive and a second disc drive. The only problem that I saw with that was the computer had an error loading the operating system. He then switched it so ithat would boot from the origianl hard drive, and since then, that problem has CEASED. But today it is doing the random crashes with vertical stripes again, and my media player doesn't work. I've run Norton and several anti-spy ware programs, and they all say my system is clean.  If anyone has any idea of what to do NEXT, I would greatly appreciate their help or advice. ThanksI always use http://www.trendmicro.com  Select Online Housecall.  It scans for everything.  Another option is autoruns. http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html That program will show you all sorts of startup info and you can delete unneed programs from loading. Why are you opening unknown files without checking them first? :-?

Solve : Weird Outlook Profiles?

Answer»

I opened my Office Outlook and in the prompt to choose a profile there is listed a bunch of new weird profiles BEGINNING with PSTLOADTMP000 and it LISTS 35 different profiles in that prompt through PSTLOADTMP035.
I went into C:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\Irish\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and those are not to be found in there. I just had a virus that has been resolved and my system is otherwise running great. I run XP Pro on an Asus BOARD with an AMD XP 2100 and 1gb ram.If the virus has been cleaned you should just delete all the extra profiles.  They are not all seperate pst files most likely.  Also you could just set your profile as the deafault and set not to prompt again.

Solve : windows folder size (plus slow startup)?

Answer»

Hello: :-?
My windows folder size is 2.51G, It has a lot of what appears to be "log files", I mean LOTS and lots.... I'm not very computer savvy and am AFRAID to "Delete" stuff.
Does anyone have any idea how I can find out (or a program that will determine) what can be deleted.
This computer takes about five minutes to fully boot up (with bare bones in the start up file), and I think maybe this windows mess might have something to do with the slow startup...
  I have windows xp(home edition) a relatively new HP computer, Pent4, 3.2, 1G memory and 140 hd..
  Any suggestion would be appreciated {keeping in mind that I am not at all computer savvy}
Thanks.
Jim CCleaner is a very simple and pretty effective cleanup tool for Windows.

laptop comes on and wont load windows. The safe mode optoions come yp but when you push them the laptop locks up after loading the drivers. ALSO you cant reload windows. You're going to have to post some information about the machine and what versin of Windows, what happened prior to this, etc.

We can't quite see it from here.  windows xp home inspiron 1000 dell notebook nothing happened before this just turned it on and the safe mode options SCREEN comes on with choices but none of them work the windows boot screen comes up with the blue line going across and after that the screen goes blank. the harware has been checked and it is okayit also shuts down but the screen stays litWhen you try to reload it what happens?  It crashes during the INSTALL?  Not good.  That could be hardware?  You should probably format it FIRST then try reload.Do you have a full XP CD or a restore CD?

Solve : xp says my network adapter is unplugged?

Answer»

thank you to anyone who replies to this. my dell with xp says the cable for the NEW network card is unplugged, EVEN though it is not. the computer seems to have a built in net card, as i did not pull an old one out when i put this new one in. xp seemed to have the drivers for the card, it see's it as being there, it just says the cord is not plugged in. any ideas would be very helpfull. thank you. What happens if you plug the cord into the onboard NIC? If you disable the onboard in BIOS, the other may work, assuming the drivers are loaded. What shows in Device Manager? This is a desktop? What model? What did you ADD? Why did you add it if there was an onboard NIC?

As you can see, more information is always helpful.  I've seen this happen somtimes if the NIC's "detect network type" setting is not working properly.

More DETAILS can be found at http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/networkcard.htm

Solve : deleted bios???

Answer»

Then if the Asus advice fails to show you a post I'd create the bootable floppy, copy afudos.exe and the bios file from the support disk then boot it to A drive and run A:\afudos /iyourbios.rom as per the book.Alright, I followed your directions fed, and it worked. I was able to update my bios and evrything. Now once again, it seems that my problems only get worse. I had to reinstall my floppy drive because it wasn't properly attached, so I plugged in the cord and power plug into the back expecting for my floppy to work. When I turn on my computer, I noticed smoke comming up from my floppy, so I imeediately turn off the power and completely uninstall my floppy. Once I fully removed it, I saw the the back of my floppy where you put the power cord was burnt. So anyways, i REALLY didn't CARE a whole lot bout my floppy drive, I was more worried about my harddrive and mobo, so I turned my computer back on to check to see what the damage was. THen again, my computer STARTS to smoke up, so it shutoff real fast and unplug both of my harddrives (1 20gig, 1 200gb sata).

Ok, now that i removed both harddrive, I turned it on again to see if it was my mobo. Sure enough, everything went fine and there was no smoke, so my mobo and cpu are fine and I can get into bios and evrything.

Fortunately my 20gig still works, but my 200gb maxtor sata seems to not function. I smelled my harddrive to make sure the burnin wasn't comming from the sata, but it didn't seem like it. When I plug it all in, it does not recognize the sata harddrive at al,l when before, it used to. Am I just going to have to buy a brand new harddrive? You think mabye I can get away with the warranty still on it  ? Any suggestions are welcome plzSmoke is not good.
If the socket on your A drive is burnt it may have also damaged your power supply, this could be the cause of the SECOND lot of smoke.
If the socket on the A drive is burnt then it's more than likely the plug for it is also burnt, the smoke could be coming from it also. You should check it CAREFULLY for burn marks.
Can you swap out the power supply?
I'm not a big believer in coincidences but this all seems totally unrelated to the earlier bios problems.

Solve : HP pavillion 500 password protected?

I have a hp Pavillion 500 ,2.2 GHz ,256 MB, 60GB, 64 mg ddr sdram.

Who has the administrator account for the machine. Surely they have a password?I have the password but it has been 8 months since the last time I used that pc.  I can't remember the password that is why I need helpWait, you cannot boot the computer, or your account name will not grant you access becuase you have no password? Which operating system?

FlameI have Windows XP home verison  when you boot the pc is goes straight to passwordI have one question.. Is it a Desktop or a Notebook, If it is a Notebook then if you know how to take the Notebook apart and find the battery, take the battery off and then wait for about 2 mins and put the battery back on again and put the Notebook together again.. that should take off the password to the BIOS..It is a desktop, It has been unplug for 8 months Quote

This doesn't work with a laptop as it does with a desktop fora BIOS password.is there a battery backup on a desktopDoes it ask for your password at a login screen, or in what looks like DOS asking for a password?

Flameit looks like DOS it has a black screen behind it and blue around the password little box to type in.  if you  try to go into setup it says entering setup   ......r stetup whatever that means but that is DOS mode in thatCan you provide a serial number so that we can check whether or not the machine has been stolen? This is no reflection on you but you will understand that such checks have to be made.serial number:CN312A7071
SYSTEM NUMBER:    :)DC470A

I dont mind anybody checking the serial number if it will help me I bought it  from Circuit City in Macon, GAThank you for that kindianne. Now we need to ascertain exactly what is passworded. Time how long it takes for the computer to reach this stage from switch on and post back. I suspect it's BIOS passworded but I need to be certain.

Many major vendors took on the stupid idea of using a BIOS logo which prevents the user from seeing what's happening at boot. Some vendors then GOT even more stupid and INCLUDED their own OEM boot logo which was very similar to the or the same as their BIOS logo. Consequently, it makes it very difficult for us to tell what stage the computer is at in the boot stage from user descriptions.the last time I used the pc I would lock it so nobody could get in my pc  it was in the start up mode I guess where you can CHANGE everything before windows starts.   when you turn it on  that is the first thing you see it probably takes a few seconds to pop up on the screen

I was adding more MEMORY to my LAPTOP a Quantex and it did not work right and now get the message  WINDOW COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT.   SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS

YOU CAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS FILE BY STARTING WINDOWS SETUP USING THE ORIGINAL SETUP CD-ROM

Solve : Re: attachments?

Answer»

1.Are you using Outlook Express? If yes, try click Tools -> Options -> SECURITY tab; SELECT the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that COULD potentially contain a virus"; click APPLY / OK.

2.You may need the HOTMAIL Attachments Control (HMAtchmt.ocx located in Windows/Downloaded Program Files folder). If you have disabled ActiveX downloading, then you need to re-enable (temporarily) to let MS install it. It usually wants to install when you compose a new email so as to have the ability to upload attachments for sending. Quote

hi,i'm running xp home and cant open attachments in hotmail.
would appreciate any help

Click Options on the top RIGHT side.

Then open Mail Display Settings

Here are my settings. I just sent a picture attachment from Outlook Express to my Hotmail account and it opened right up. Hmm?

Might be your Display Internet content settings. Quote

Solve : Test your AV software?

Answer»

This is a very simple test known as the EICAR test. Download this archive to a folder and extract it. You'll need to keep extracting the file as it's a multiple NESTED archive; a trick that's commonly USED in virus delivery.
At what stage does your AV see the "infected" file?

This file is a dummy virus and is completely BENIGN. No harm whatsoever will result from you downloading it.Another good post ..........  Norton AV 2005 had it instantly.

dl65  NAV 2002 detected it as soon as I had unzipped eicar_com.zip and clicked on the executable file.

I had to disable my Norton Personal FIREWALL before I could download the test file. Quote

I had to disable my Norton Personal Firewall before I could download the test file.
Really? That's weird? Are you sure? Ever get the feeling you're not in control?

Solve : real player 10?

Answer»

I downloaded the free adition of real player 10 which seemed ok as soon as I opened it, then it  sayes real player has a problem and closes.  sayes "Docume 1\owner\locals\temp\b11d appcompat.txt " I have tried re downloading help First use www.ccleaner.com to download CCleaner and run it to clean your system. I am sure it will help.
If not check this link:
http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_resolve_my_problem_with_appcompattxt.html
But I say you Real player is a headache. I use it rarely when very urgent online straem is needed. But as a default player it is really boring, if you haven't tried yet.Google appcompat.txt.  You'll get some findings.  I believe you need to OPEN that .txt file and see what it says.  I'm under the impression it may contain a clue as to what the problem is.  SINCE that file is in the temp folder, it's APPARENTLY not a regular program file.  I think I would try changing it's name, then opening Media Player and see whether that makes any difference.  If you no longer get the message and everything seems to work OK, then DELETE the file.  Actually, running Disk Cleanup should clean out the temp folder.

Do you maintain up-to-date ANTIVIRUS protection and do you scan your system for spyware?  Do you did able your antivirus software when you installed WMP 10?  If not, perhaps you should try reinstalling with your antivirus software disabled.Realplayer is a virus, Google for "real alternative".

Needless to say, Hijackthis displays it.

Solve : GDIPlus?

Answer»

Whenever I try to burn a DVD with Sonic's MyDVD, I always get this error message:
operating system error: Gdiplus::Status 0x80040200 -13. I've tried fixing all the vulnerable GDIPlus.dll files, but I still get the error message. Stupid Sonic isn't even letting me register to contact them for support. Any suggestions??GDIPlus is Microsofts graphics device interface and it has been subject to a serious exploit. A patch is available here if you don't already have it. Other patches are available fro the above URL.Thanks, but I've tried that before, and it doesn't seem to fix it. I still get the error message. Something must be seriously messed up with Sonic if their own patch doesn't even fix the problem. Any other ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it?I believe the patch is actually a Microsoft patch.
Does the event viewer offer any clues?
What ASPI layer is installed?Event viewer doesn't seem to give anything useful, I can't find the MyDVD application in there at all. However, it does say that Light Scribe is working. I don't know if that is the BURNING function, but if it is, it's strange that it says it's working, because the error always occurs right before the burning process. You'll have to forgive me, I'm a total newbie to computers, but how would I find what the ASPI layer is? Thanks!  If you have a broadband connection, download a trial version of Nero and try it. If it doesn't work, ensure that it's own ASPI layer is in use. Now try again. I'll give details on what to do once you have Nero installed.Nero doesn't have a DVD burning OPTION, and it keeps freezing. I know that Sonic's problem has something to do the GDIPlus, but all Microsoft has is a program to download saying whether or I have a security vulnerability, but doesn't tell me how to fix it.Nero most certainly does have DvD burning capability! If Nero is not correcly operating then there's a problem with your system. Was the Nero Info Tool included with your download?

Just in case, carry out the procedures LISTED here and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done. When I try to click other video formats, it doesn't work. But even if it did work, it says I would have to pay for an extra plug-in or something. I had a really hard time downloading Nero. I've been able to burn DVDs off my computer with Sonic before, this problem is very recent, like from two days ago. Do you know of any other programs I could use to check what exactly is wrong with my system? Thank you for all your help! Here is my HJT log:

Your logfile looks fine except that personally, I would dump the Viewpoint toolbar.
All I can suggest now is that you uninstall all the burning programs and then reinstall Sonic.
Turning off the XP burning service may help.
Other than that, it's over to Sonic support or perhaps a System Restore back to a time when it did function correctly.

Solve : Test your firewall?

Answer»

The following two SITES will "attack" your system in an attempt to DISCOVER open ports ETC. If any are FOUND, you need to urgently take preventative measures:
Sygates scanner.
Symantecs firewall/AV scan.

These are both fairly simple tests. An in depth probe is available via NScan at NetMonitor.

Solve : Re: i installed window xp and it ate my hd?

Answer»

Posting your requests in a language that at least some of us can understand may yield some results.IT WAS LATE AND I SUCK AT TYPING   ANYWAYS  HERE WE GO        I REINSTALLED WINDOWS LAST

NIGHT          IT SEEMED TO GO SMOOTHLY     ONLY WHEN I FINISHED I FOUND I HAD 60 GIGS OF HD

SPACE USED     I AM SOPOSED TO HAVE A TOTAL OF 114        THE INSTALL SAID IT WOULD DELETE

EVERYTHING BUT IT DIDNT      THERE WERE SOME PROGRAM FILES LEFT THEY WERE ALL TRASHED

SO I DELETED THEM BUT IM STILL MISSING 60 GIGS      IVE LOOKED EVERY WHERE TO NO AVAIL

WHAT HAPPEND AND HOW DO I INSTALL WITHOUT THIS HAPPENINGDownload this file and extract it to a folder. Run the resulting bootdisk.exe with a diskette in the floppy drive. This will create a bootable diskette.
Use this diskette to boot the computer that you want to set up XP on. When the diskette has finished loading, type delpart FOLLOWED by enter and a small program will launch. Elect to delete all partitions.
Now reboot but this time from the XP CD.
Carry out the installation as normal, electing to format the C: drive to the file system of your choice (FAT or NTFS).

You do have a full WinXP CD and not a restore CD don't you?YES FUL VERSION THANKS FOR THE HELPYOU also seem to have a problem with a stuck caps lock KEY. im at work caps has to be on to use apps sorry for the

Solve : 1962 Boot Sequence Error?

Answer»

I am trying to reinstall/install windows 98SE on a couple of IBM 300GL, (80 MB RAM) 6282 computers and having the same message come up.  I've tried 3 different hard DRIVES and am able to format the disk.  Windows will begin LOADING, but before I need to put in the Windows Code, I get the message: 1962 Boot Sequence Error with the picture of the floppy disk and floppy drive showing up on the screen...time and again.  Error 1962 is Drive does not contain a valid boot sector

Checl boot sequence in BIOS (F1 at start). Make sure floppy is before hard drive. Boot with 98 floppy and format the drive. THen you are ready to load O/S from the CDIt may well be that the Win98 CD is corrupted or if it's a copy, infected. If it's not a copy, use Xcopy32 to copy the contents of the Win98 folder from the CD to a folder on the hard drive. If the filecopy process COMPLETES without error, run setup from the hard drive folder. If an error occurs during the filecopy process, then the CD is suspect.

If the CD is a copy, follow the above process but ensure that the CD is virus/malware FREE by checking it on another machine. Thanks for the advice.
Sometimes the obvious route seems to be the wrong one.  I thought that was just a generic message.  In checking the boot sequence, the D drive had been disabled as had the hard drive in the boot sequence.  I wonder how that happened??? No matter.  Finally, the computers have their operating system loaded.
Thank you very MUCH....once again!!

Solve : Cannot connect to internet with Broadband connecti?

Answer»

I recently moved in to someone's house that already has a broadband connection up and running.  I tried to plug their ethernet into my computer but I get a message that says that there is limited connectivity and some features may not be AVAILABLE.  When I probe further it says this may be caused by a failure to assign an IP address.  I did some research and it seems that it may be a point to point over ethernet connection.  However, the computer that the connection works on is running Windows 98, while mine is Windows XP so I am having trouble figuring out how to configure them the same.  Also, the person that set up the internet is gone, and I dont know the ISP.  Help! Are you running your connection through a router?  Or did you unplug their computer and then plug yours in?I think its running through a router, but I am not very computer savvy.  There is box that says RCA Broadband on it, and an ethernet cable connecting it to the computer.  I just unplugged this cable from the first computer and plugged it into mine. You can try running the internet connection wizard (ICW) from XP. THat might help, unless the router is set to require specific IP addresses rather than DHCP, where they are automatically assigned.Figured it out.  Just had to assign an IP address myself.  Thanks for the help.Glad you are up and running!  Oops, I spoke too soon.  This is really mysterious.  So I got it to work by just LOOKING up the IP address, subnet bask, default getaway, and DNS server from the computer that was working, and using that as the given addresses on the other computer.  It worked yesterday, but now its not working anymore.  It says that there is a connection, but when I look at activity it is sending PACKETS of information but not receiving any.  Was that not a GOOD solution?Have you actually taken over this account or are you just hoping that it will work? Not sure what you mean exactly....I don't really know about the ins and outs of the US system but in the UK you cannot just plug a modem or router into a telephone line and hope to carry on where the previous customer left off. You need to order DSL or cable from an ISP in your own name and you must be the account holder for that telephone number.Well, the situation is that I have moved in with a family that has  an active account with an ISP.  What I have been trying to do is merely plug the ethernet from the router into my computer.  When this cable is plugged into their computer, it FUCTIONS fine.  Is this because only one computer can use such a connection?  As I've said, I'm not familiar with the US system but that scenario is certainly true of some ISP packages here (Notably AOL UK) where only one connection is allowed.

Solve : Need help with XP?

Answer»

We bought a new Dell with XP. It has corel photo album6 which is a 60 DAY free trial. We are trying to PUT our kodak easy share soft ware BACK on but unable. Corel has taken over all our pics. Tried to delete it but can't. Any ONE else having this kind of problem?I presume you have managed to install the Kodak software.  Next thing to do is associate your pictures with the Kodak program.

The instructions are here...

Good luck

No, Kodak will not install. Had it transfered to this new computer and it would not open. Removed it and it will not re-install.You cannot "transfer" a program if that's what you're actually trying to do; it must be installed via it's installer.Do you have the software CD for the Kodak prog :-?

Please advise how you are trying to re-install it...
