Solve : Two subjects: Popups and Pinball.?

Answer»

Hey all. My girlfriend asked me to check on her computer and told me something was wrong with it. I look at it and there were two problems.

1. When I load up IE there are non-stop popups. I know this is most likely adware/spyware but I put Microsoft Anti-Spyware on it but I don't know any good free adware programs. COULD someone recommend me some adware and/or spyware to help he find the problem?

2. For some reason....Pinball doesn't load. We thought it could be because AVG quartined something that MAYBE effecting the startup of pinball but could their be any other ideas? It happens as soon as I click it from the GAME section. It BRINGS up the black page with the standard pinball image but then shuts down.

Any help could be greatful.Killbox asked me to do stuff and I dont understand what it is...like delete file, dummies, stuff like that. What does it WANT?!!!Do I need LSD or something to understand this computer-speak???

Solve : XP tab_on, tab_off, start_tab...Start Up messages.?

Answer»

Win XP. Just cloned my 80G onto a 120G Seagate w/ provided software. Fixed System Restore problem with Google's help. Everything is 100% A-O-K...except for the following 3 back-to-back-to back startup messages/errors/problems:

title: tab_off_filler
title: tab_on_filler
title: start_tab_off

The body of the message for all 3 of these errors/messages says: "default skin bitmaps not found. cannot START application" I click OK on each and go about my business...no worries. but I want to know what these are associated with and why and how to get RID of them. something has OBVIOUSLY changed, but what? GOOGLE had nothing. No program name or association is given. Tried F8 at start up and couldn't come up w/ anything after trying a few things. Anyone have a clue? thanks.

kevinkev:

You have to figure out what for what program is the error. You might try this:

1. Right-click My Computer and click Manage in the shortcut menu
2. In Computer Management, click Event Viewer and double-click Application
3. Look for any errors in the Application events list (these are indicated by red circles with white Xs)
4. Note the SOURCE of these errors and let us know what program is indicated

Embrace the grace,

Solve : Need to regain space and repair shortcuts.?

Answer»

hp a406X
WINDOWS xp

I did a full restore regained back enough SPACE to reactivate my restore points,
My DESKTOP seems to be running well, I have problems with shortcuts not working.
My problem is I have old users at least one may have adm. privledges or owner status.
Can I delete these and regain all that space or will i create more problems? I deled two without problems, so far.

[smiley=beer.gif]Exactly what do you mean by "full restore"? Clearly, you did not erase the HARD drive and do a fresh INSTALLATION Windows. If you had done this, you would not still have those other user accounts. So, exactly what did you do to regain some space?

How large is your hard drive? How much free space remaining? To check this, go to My Computer, right click on the drive and select Properties.

Exactly what happens when you try to start an application or open a file from a shortcut?

You've basically answered your own question about deleting more old user accounts. Sure, you can delete more of them without causing problems.
Do not simply delete the user accounts from within Explorer. Use the Control PANEL>Users applet.
To free up space download, install and run [highlight]CCleaner[/highlight].

Solve : XP Password protection help?

Answer»

I had a virus (apparently) destroy my ability to boot off of my d: drive. I reformatted and reinstalled XP PRO on my C: drive and am back running.
I can ACCESS files on the D: drive except my old documents directory which comes back as "access denied".

I think that the problem must be because I had a password set up around my account when I was using the D: drive as the system disk.

Is there a WAY to access my files in the documents directory. I know the password etc, but have no idea how to log on to it.

Solve : Rename an attachment.?

Answer»

Hi All,

I want to rename my email ATTACHMENT received to attachment name same as the sender address.

In more detail: If my email is received from the address say [email protected] and the attachment name is skills.doc i want to extract the attachment and rename it from skill.doc to [email protected]

Below is my code to save the attachment with the attached file name. and i want this attachement to renamed to what ever the variable strReport contains each time the loop runs.

The below code that works fine:

SUB SendersInFolder()

  Dim ns As Outlook.Namespace
  Dim Inbox As Outlook.MAPIFolder
  Dim Item As Outlook.MailItem
  Dim strReport As String
  Dim Atmt As Attachment
  Dim FileName As String
  Dim i As Integer

  ' Get the current Folder
  SET ns = GetNamespace("MAPI")
  Set Inbox = ActiveExplorer.CurrentFolder
' Check for messages in Folder
  If Inbox.Items.Count = 0 Then
strReport = "No Mail Items in current Folder"
  Else
    For Each Item In Inbox.Items
' Get the Sender's name and Email address
      strReport = strReport & Item.SenderName & vbCrLf
      MsgBox strReport

i = 0

    For Each Atmt In Item.Attachments
       FileName = "D:\HR\Email Attachments\" & Atmt.FileName   '#1
       MsgBox FileName
       Atmt.SaveAsFile FileName '#2
       i = i + 1

    Next Atmt
Next Item
End If

If i > 0 Then
    MsgBox "I found " & i & " attached files." _
& vbCrLf & "I have saved them into the D:\HR\Email Attachments folder." _
& vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Have a nice day.", vbInformation, "Finished!"
Else
MsgBox "I didn't find any attached files in your mail.", vbInformation, _
    "Finished!"
End If

'GetAttachments_err:
'MsgBox "An unexpected error has occurred." _
'& vbCrLf & "Please note and report the following information." _
      '& vbCrLf & "Macro Name: GetAttachments" _
      '& vbCrLf & "Error Number: " & Err.Number _
      '& vbCrLf & "Error Description: " & Err.Description _
      ', vbCritical, "Error!"
  ' Resume GetAttachments_exit

GetAttachments_exit:
   Set Atmt = Nothing
   Set Item = Nothing
   Set ns = Nothing

  ' Clean Up
  Set Inbox = Nothing
  Set ns = Nothing
  Set Item = Nothing
  MsgBox "done"
End Sub

I tried modifying the above code in #1 as below line and tried
FileName = "D:\HR\Email Attachments\" & strReport

#2
Atmt.SaveAsFile strReport

I am getting error which says Automation error

Can anyone help me with this please

no idea about settingsAs long as you have your username and password you should be OK. It would be good to have that AOL number nearby, just in case. so you think it will be ok to run the first xp file anywaywill it override the system and get rid of everything that is on the pc or do i need to get rid of everything first then run the diskI suspect it will format the drive first (blank it out) and then reload everything to like the day you got it. That's how these usually work.thanks i will give it a try.Be sure and post back and let us know how it went! tried to reuse previous id but things got screwed up. system rebooted back up fine the only thing was i had to change user id because i forgot last info. THANKS FOR THE HELP GX1_Man YOU WERE A LIFE SAVER!!!!!A small tip for a future restore - Use XPs "Files and settings transfer wizard". Burn the resulting file to a CD ALONG with any other important DATA that you will need such as SP2.

Solve : Bad Image Error?

Answer»

Yesterday I noticed that more than half of my programs don't run because of a bad image error. It says, "the application or DDL (and then whatever the PROGRAM file that isn't working) is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette". I scanned my WHOLE computer for viruses or any other threat and nothing came up. I don't KNOW what this is. What should I do? Thanks. Can you be a little more explicit? Things LIKE OS and exact error messages would help.

Solve : Dell BIOS and SP2 Issues...or not?

Answer»

OK, I have always been under the impression that BIOS/firmware upgrades should not be taken lightly, and I am rather uncomfortable dealing with them.

After browsing the Dell forums, some folks SAY that you should update the 4550 BIOS before updating to SP2 or else you will get the BSOD or other issues. Well, I am on A03 and have been RUNNING SP2 since it first came out, and have never had an issue thus far (that I am aware of anyway). I posted on the forum there and was told that some users had no problems updating to SP2.

I have never updated my Dell Dimension 4550 BIOS (maybe once waaaay back under direction of Dell support when I was having issues with my CDRW) - I am still on version A03. The latest update is A08. If i am not experiencing any issues, is there any reason why I should?

I also read that the A07 and A08 updates have problems with firewire cards. The next upgrades I plan to make are a firewire card for a digital video camera and a graphics card upgrade (probably the now lower end Geforce FX 5500 OC AGP).

The general consensus on some other boards is that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." What confuses me is why do some 4550 users have to upgrade their BIOS yet others do not? What would the difference be?

Is there any chance that there may be some "hidden" issues that are not apparent to me?

I think you have thought this out well. The general rule is don't update unless there are known issues that the update addresses. Dell allows you to return to a previous BIOS readily and has a safe update procedure. In this case I wouldn't hesitate. You may feel better DOWNLOADING another A03 just in case.Don't hesitate updating the BIOS? You are the first person to say that (if that is what you are saying). What is your reasoning?

I guess I just don't understand why some 4550 owners have had to update before SP2, but others have not. Isn't most of the underlying hardware the same in all 4550's?

PKI have never had a problem updating (or downgrading) a Dell BIOS. It is as safe as it gets. If it solves some problems, OK.

The reason some people have had to do it depends on the hardware in the MACHINE. They are not all exactly the same despite the same model number. There is a variation in components from the factory as well as what users have added.

Solve : Excel Shared Files?

Answer»

While using a shared excel file, I RECEIVE a message that a user has the file locked. We can have up to 15 users at any time and once the file is locked entries by other users are lost. Any advice?
Thanks
J McConnellI'm not sure whether this is the way this works, but I'd bet on it. The file being locked simply MEANS that the user who first OPENED the file has primary control of it as far as having the capability to edit or update it. Isn't that correct? So, as long as that person has the file open, any other users who open it will find it locked, right?

This is almost common sense, isn't it? How could you have mutliple users working on the same Excel file and updating it simultaneously? Wouldn't that be a chaotic and disorganized situation? Keep in mind Excel is a spreadsheet application, not a database application. In a multi-user environment, a database could be updated by multiple users without causing problems since they are probably just adding or DELETING records. Even with database, I'd guess individual records may be "locked".

With spreadsheet, users could be making changes to layout, inserting or deleting ENTIRE sheets, changing formulas, recording macros, etc. Again, Wouldn't that be a chaotic and disorganized situation?

Solve : Running slower after reinstalling Windows?

Answer»

hello,

After lots of computer troubles last week, I reinstalled Windows on my laptop, wiping data and starting over (going Ctl-F11 on startup). Things are back to the beginning when I purchased the computer, but the problem is, it seems to be processing A LOT slower than it used to.

I can't figure out why this is. I reinstalled a second time to see if maybe I had contracted a virus early in the first reinstall. But it is just as slow. It isn't unusable, just slow.

One thing: My Computer says that I have 179 MHZ, 512 MB of RAM (the first number seems small to me, but I'm not expert). Other than that, I can't see anything that is slowing this thing down. It's ESSENTIALLY in original shape, except for being slow.

Other specs:
Running XP Home
Dell Inspiron 600 M
1.5 GB processor

Any help or potential diagnosis would be truly appreciated. Thank YOUIF you can post your service tag (a 6-7 digit combo of numbers and letters either on the machine or in the BIOS boot up screen, bottom right) we would know what we are dealing with in terms of hardware.

This was a restore CD you used, rather than an actual Windows CD?bakeman:

Also, is the laptop CONNECTED to the Internet or to a wireless local area network in your home or office? The Internet Protocol might be configured incorrectly and Windows may be waiting to try DIFFERENT ways to connect.

You can try this:

1. Click Start and Run
2. In the Run dialog box, type CMD and click OK
3. In the CMD window, type IPCONFIG and press Enter on your keyboard
4. If the IP Address begins with 169, then Windows took the time to connect, but finally gave up, and this may be what took so long

Solve : Recovering NTOSKRNL.exe...?

Answer»

I while back I changed my desktop theme with a SOFTWARE. Then I decided to change the bootscreen. I used an ntoskrnl.exe and replaced it. I thought I kept the original in a different folder but I guess not. So I replaced it but the bootscreen never changed (I guess I did it wrong).

Anyways, I'm trying to install Service Pack 2 because I will be using some software (MS Visual C++, etc.) but it says that the original ntoskrnl file is missing and that I need to get it. Also, whenever I turn my computer on, it asks me which bootscreen to select. There are two in the list and apparently, they are the exact same.

So, I was wondering if ANYONE can help me. Is there any way I can get my original ntoskrnl file?
And can I use the system recovery disc to recover the ntoskrnl file? (I heard that if I use the system recovery discs that it will mess up my computer since there will be no ntoskrnl)

Thanks in advance. My AIM sn is: craneeagleshadowThe original should still be available in C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386I just checked and it's not there.

Should I just use the system recovery cd?Have you searched the system for any other instance of it?
Have you tried the System File Cheker?
If it wasn't altered too long ago, what about System Restore?4life:

If you don't know how to use the system file checker:

1. From the Windows desktop, click Start and click Run
2. Type SFC/ SCANNOW
3. The Windows File Protection message appears and shows the progress as it scans for missing or changed Windows files.
4. If prompted to insert the Windows CD, do so and click OK to replace the missing or changed Windows files

DocYeah I used the system file checker. But it only shows a black screen with the process and then it dissapears. I was expecting a window to POP up and ask me for something. Wow, I don't know what to do. I think I'll just go ahead and use the system recovery cd. It might be risky but theres nothing else I can do. I feel like a real n00b. 4life:

Sorry, my mistake.

You have to type CMD in the Run dialog box. In the CMD window, type SFC/ SCANNOW .

DocI did it and the screen dissapears. It doesn't give me any time to type in "SFC/ SCANNOW". Well in a few hours I'm going to use the system restore cd.

Thanks to every who helped me. Yeah, i caught the mistake and modified my last post. Please read the above one more time.

DocA reinstall SEEMS the best route for you. I hope you do REGULAR backups of any important stuff.

Solve : TCPIP protocol missing in Win ME?

Answer»

Hi - I used to have ISDN working on a Win ME operating system (DSL and/or broadband were not available in my area) and it worked fine (or as fine as it gets with ISDN). I now have broadband through Atlantic Broadband, so I uninstalled the ISDN software. It appears it also removed the TCPIP protocol for networking. When I GO to Control Panel, Networks, Protocols and CLICK "Add", there is nothing available under Protocols/MICROSOFT. I searched the machine for any *.inf files and found none related to networking. The original installation CD is no help either, says right on it "No drivers are on this CD, for reinstall only". I'd like to download the protocol I need, but can't find it on the Microsoft support site. Anybody know of where to look and precisely what it would be called? Trying to hook up to a Netgear LAN. I'm thinking it should work with just standard TCPIP bindings, but I'm not sure. Any help or direction will be appreciated. Thanks :-?I know you've probaboly DONE this already but we have to make sure:ROTFLMFAOHuh? Sumfink wrong with my colour scheme or sumfink? Thanks for the info and, yes, That's exactly where I was talking about. when I clicked on "Protocol" and then on "Microsoft", it was blank, no protocol choices to make. Problem is now fixed, I replaced TCPIP.sys in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and was also able to get tcpip.inf from a FRIEND. Don't know if TCPIP.sys was corrupted or it was the "missing" .inf file, but it works now. Thanks all for your efforts!

Solve : can't remove prog's ??

R0SSHow ancient is the operating system and how much RAM? It MAY be trying to creat more HD space (shich is not available) to do it's uninstall procedure so it does not work.

How about

del c:\windows\temp

from a command prompt just to get some space and empty recycle bin and turn it off if the system will allow it?As well as temp files, don't forget temp internet files and cookies etc. Then there's all those readme files that no-one ever reads, doc files, TXT, files, pdf files etc.It would TAKE some time to manually get rid of them.

You could download Ccleaner i think its called.

Crap Cleaner lol It removes all the "Crap" that you dont need from your computer.

Google it.

My problem is that all of a sudden I can not use the send to feature under FILE in Intenet Explorer to send a link or webpage. I cannot use the send feature in MY Pictures that enable an automatic resizing to a sendable size of a large size photo. I cannot send anything from Picasa 2.

I get a message .. The operation cannot be completed because of network or connection problems. Please check your connections.
I do not want to have to do a reinstall of Windows because of all the other programs that I have on this computer.. Can anybody helpHighcen....Have you made any changes to anything , updated anything , downloaded anything which may have effected the ability to send .......
Are you able to add links to a Email and attach pics ok to a Email ?
Have you been visited by a trojan or a virus ?
If your system is bug free ....have you tried system RESTORE to back to when those features did work?
Have you checked your event viewer to see if anything SHOWS up in there ?

dl65

Highcen..... To check your event viewer ...... click START/ CONTROL PANEL / ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS / EVENT VIEWER ....... Have a look back to the approx date and time you first noticed the issue and see if anything shows up .

dl65 This registry edit should restore the context menu entry and operation for SendTo:

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Send To]
="{7BA4C740-9E81-11CF-99D3-00AA004AE837}"
Thanks for the offers of help.. I am going to try and do what was said.

I could not check the event log.. when I open Control panel and select certain of the categories the program locks up... I have to use Task Manager to close the open and frozen windows.
My son did a search and came up with a partial solution. Use Mozilla Firebird as my default email. The send to and picture EMAILING features work in that program.. Hmmm...

Thanks again to all who were trying to help.

Solve : HELPPPPPPP!?

Answer»

I'm computer savy enough to deal with the usual spyware, VIRUS, run of the mill problems that normally happen on a computer but this one has me COMPLETELY STUMPED!

I am having a problem with a number of file types on my computer. I am USING Windows XP and Service Pack 1. (I wasn't too thrilled with service pack 2 and because of the security involved, alot of things on my network failed to work properly, so I uninstalled it)

Specifically, MP3 files.
I am able to open mp3 files as long as everytime I want to open one I have to select a program from a list of programs. Windows tells me it "Windows cannot open this file" and lets me select from a list of programs. I MAKE SURE I check the always USE this program to open this type of file and then the file opens. Problem is, no matter what I do, windows will not open that file automatically, even if I make sure Windows Media Player is my default player. I also went to FOLDER options and noticed the file type MP3 does not exist. So I added it. Even after adding it, it does not allow me to change the program associated with it and the next time I go into file types, the MP3 type is again not on the list. I first noticed this with just the mp3 files. Now there are about 3 types of files total that will not allow me to associate a program with it. The icons all go to the default icon that windows gives if you don't have a program on your computer for that type of file. I have software for every kind of file that i am having these problems with. I also did a registry cleanup with Registry Mechanic and that didn't help at all. Please help me as I am extremely confused as to what is going on here.

(I don't know if this is worth mentioning or even a possible concern, but I am hooked up on a remote network in Buffalo that connects to my corporate office in Los Angeles, through a VPN Tunnel. I am running through a Sonicwall TZ170 router) I mention this cause I'm not sure if the connection has anything to do with the settings on my computer. First things first, SP2 is not an option, it is a necessity. I have never yet seen it fail to install unless the system was already compromised, except in the CASE of some realtime AV monitors being in place.
I've not seen many problems with it that cannot be easily resolved and believe me, I've seen a lot of machines since it's release!

What anti virus/anti malware measures have you taken?Did you reinstall Windows XP SP1 after you uninstalled SP2, or did you just uninstall SP2?

Your local area network connection problems with SP2 may have been caused by the Windows XP built in firewall that is installed with that service pack. Disabling the Windows firewall or changing the firewall settings may have fixed the problem.

Solve : Computer will not start after normal shut-down?

Computer works fine, using most any application. However, when we shut the system down
we are not able to restart for many, many HOURS (like overnight)!

We have tried to restart immediately, in a couple of hours, or 4 hours and nothing happens.
The next morning, the computer will start right up!

When the computer does not start, we do not hear the customary "beep" associated with the
completion of POST, nor do we hear any other BEEPS, see lights on the optical mouse or screen
raster.

I have replaced the CMOS battery.

Please, any ideas? All HELP appreciated

Thanks

Duff PSU capacitors possibly casused by overloading. Substitute PSU to test.Substituted a known good power supply and everything works great!

Thanks for your help.Yerry D:

You might also consider using a power supply with greater wattage (for example, 400), especially if you have added new hardware. Otherwise, this power supply might suffer the same failure.

Solve : netwoking two computers?

Answer»

Here they are referred to commercially as Multi-User Ethernet modems and PACKAGED as an ADSL-Modem (Ethernet pack).I ASKED for a link to a "multi user modem" as you PUT it. Please point ONE out.The Modem we are using is a D-Link ADSL Modem DSL-302G.Which is one of the very few true "shared modems".It was purchased originally to allow my son's computer and his X-Box to share the internet for X-Box Live. Well I THINK thats what it was intended for.

Solve : Don't by from Tigerdirect.com?

Answer»

Why you ask? I haven't had a problem TILL now. I was wondering why my BAD review of some PNY memory wasn't posted. I was told on the phone "they only post good reviews". "They will not post a bad review of products they sell"! I don't need to tell you the point of reivews is to see the good and bad. I think I'll change my ID at all the forums to "Dont_buy_from_tigerdirect.com". Sorry, but I have to spread the news. Anything to help bring their buisness down. I wondered about that. I've purchased from TigerDirect, about 4 to 6 times in the last 2 or 3 years. Never had a problem with them but I agree with you on this issue. In COMPARISON, newegg.com clearly does post negative reviews.Reviews aside, I have had no problems with TigerDirect. I have had a few dud products from the hundred ordered, but returns/exchanges have been easy.

A lot of those reviews leave a lot to be desired.I have bought from them for 5 years and only had 1 bad experience. Their recommended mother board , 755 intel processor and ddr2 memory were not a match and would not work. I kept the processor and sent the rest back for a full refund and ordered the CORRECT board and memory and its is working fine.

OK, I SEE it. Very easy. So, there are too ways to do it. But, attaching is much easier than using image tags. And, LOOKING back at your first post on this topic, I see you did mention that Attach technique. Thanks.

There aren't actually two ways to do it. Inserting an image and attaching a file are two completely different things.N
on image FILETYPES can be "ATTACHED" but they cannot be "inserted"
Inserted images have to already be on a server somewhere but attachments can be directly uploaded from the local system.
Inserted images can appear anywhere in a post but attachments are always tagged on to the end.

Use the insert image button if you don't like using tags MANUALLY.

i tried it but it didnt work it poped up saying this specified file is not a registry script. you can only inport BINARY registry files from within the registry editor. You didn't copy it correctly then. I know it works because I tried it before posting it. You must copy everythng in the code window exactly and the file must be saved as a .reg file.it says it has been entered into the registry but i still can use any exe programsBackup your data and reload Windows, then. Do you have a shiny real Windows CD or some sort of "restore" disk?Try copying C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache\regedit.exe to your desktop, renaming to regedit.com and running that. Does Regedit run? If it does, do the same for C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

It WOULD really help if we knew what this virus was and what your "friend" did.i cant open regedit and i didnt get a restore disc the virus was TROJAN popper and my friend went into regedit and started deleting stuff and he deleted the exe folderYou will be needing a Windows CD and plan on reinstalling. Maybe your friend COULD buy you one? you also need to practice safe computing in the future to prevent a recurrence. how much is it?they r going for around $120 - $150 on ebay.com.au Quote

i cant open regedit and i didnt get a restore disc the virus was trojan popper and my friend went into regedit and started deleting stuff and he deleted the exe folder

It was more likely to be the peper trojan for which simple removal tools are readily available. Solve : Password Protected File/Folder?

Answer»

Does Windows itself has a feature to create password to protect a file or folder rather than USING a 3rd party application?

Thanks. It depends what version of Windows we're talking about. Remember, there are some big differences between XP Home and XP Professional. A LOT also depends on whether the drives concerned are formatted to FAT or NTFS.Windows XP Professional SP2
NTFSNTFS has protection against unathorized users.
You can create folders with certain user access permission. But for the same user, you can't protect your foders. E.g. For user A there can be some folder protected and some not. but you can't reach those folders by submitting password. You NEED to change the current user, to a user with priviligies.
You need to set permission to the certain user (in this case you) and remove others' permission under the Security tab, from the properties of the folder. if this fits you we can talk later...

Proper English words, sentence structure and maybe some punctuation would go a long way to get him some help.there is that better.....You need to match the case connectors to the motherboard connectors. From what I've seen of this so far, your best bet would be to get hold of someone who actually knows what they're doing.
Amateur fumbling can be a very expensive hobby!i got the case connectors in but when we try to start the comp up it turns on and there is a blank screen...no bios or anythingAmateur fumbling can be a very expensive hobby!

Solve : Network gone wonky?

Answer»

Hey all, it's been awhile since I had my last problem, have since fixed my computer, had it up and running for a total of about a MONTH, and then just recently my internet has crapped out on me. A little background:

-Router has 1 wired connection (my MOTHER's computer)
-Only computer that was actively using the router wirelessly was my computer
-It's a linksys 801.11b router & PCI card

Now, my computer is perfectly able to connect to the router wirelessly; similarly, my mother's computer has no problems ACESSING the internet through the wired connection. However, my computer for some reason cannot obtain an IP. I've TRIED everything (including reformatting, and turning on & off firewalls on both computers). Soooo, now i'm just plain confuzzled. Any ideas out there folks? You are running DHCP?Yep. My crap is set to "automatically determine IP adress" and so on, cuz to be honest I'm a layman at networking. Is that computer named the same as another on the network? Did it ever work correctly? If not is this the first one you have set up?Aaaahhh, the beauties of static IP ADDRESSING.
Is it a problem with the IP or is it an actual connectivity problem? The first warning of a lack of connectivity is often the network tray icon changing to "get IP mode".

Solve : Network Problem (Registry Help?

Answer»

I am having a problem with a small home network.

It consists of a Windows XP PRO PC, a Dell Windows XP Pro Laptop (LT) and a Sony Vaio Windows XP Home LT.

There is a wireless router that doubles as a modem and and network connector. The laptops are wireless but the PC is cable.

The sony laptop can connect to the network and get the internet but cannot share files or printers, all the settings are correct but someone had aprently changed something in the registry that disabled file sharing, I cannot find this piece of code and cannot find a solution for windows XP only 98, if domeone knows anything to help please suggest it here.Do you have the firewall turned on? What about if you choose the folder you want to share, right click and choose Sharing and fill out the details?Uninstall and reinstall FILESHARING from the Networks applet.I have tried all of that, it's somewhere in the windows registry i'm afraid. There are literally thousands of entries within the registry that refer to networking and filesharing so much more info would be needed.
I would have THOUGHT however that an uninstall/reinstall would have fixed things.
Are you certain that a software firewall isn't blocking it or perhaps an ENTRY via the Group Policy Editor or similar? When i have searched for the problem on the web the answers have led me down a trail of folders within the registry but this folder does not exist on XP, the code is called "nofilesharingcontrol" but i cannot find this in the registry.

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/189The following areas are worth looking at for anything untoward:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\System

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Network

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\
I have checked those areas (thanks for the ideas) the only folder in policies is explorer, the is no network or system folder in there, and can find nothing in the the internet zones.Who is this someone who apparently changed something in the registry? Doesn't he/she know what was changed? Didn't he/she make a backup before changing it?
Is there a viable System Restore point available?Unfortunatly this person thinks it's fun to mess about, but no back-up was made and no resore point past Jan 2006 and this was done early last year aparently, is the only way back a clean Windows XP re-boot? because thats what i'm trying to avoid but seems to be the only possible solution. You have only yourself to blame if you let people near your systems who "think it's fun to mess about"!
If I cut the brake pipes on your car because "it was fun to mess about" what would you think of that whilst laying in your hospital bed?

Reinstall, fully secure the OS and don't let anyone else anywhere near it unless they have accounts set up in such a way that it's not possible to do any damage.I'm not trying to back out of this, you see the laptop wasn't mine, nor is it mine now, I had nothing to do with it, I was just trying to fix it. But hey ho the joys of computers!I do tend to lose my rag a little when users appear to display such a cavalier attitude toward security. I've seen many tears shed over frauds committed (And far worse) after users allowed others to mess about.
There is one case on these very boards now where an RCT is involved. That person could well be running a spambot or worse, a kiddie porn FXP. It may well be without his knowledge, but will the authorities believe that?

Ok ive been told by many here that i have bad grammar when it comes to posts, so from now on i will type as clearly as possible all the while typing as fast as i do without backspacing all the errors lol. anyways im trying to connect my desktop with my friends labtop that way he can pull some of my music to his labtop. we both have windows xp home and i have a linksys router with all the necessary cables. i was able to do this once while i was stationed in korea with my roommates and my COMPUTER but i completly forgot how to do it. ive already tried searching and only a few posts showed up that wernt to helpful so yea. help ....lolHave a read:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+set+up+home+network

<---------------

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htmI always use static IPs on any network as I like to know where everything is and exactly what's happening. One major pitfall of setting up a home network is any software firewall that may be installed. This must be correctly CONFIGURED and it's wise to disable it until the network is up and running.i dont think i used static ip the last time i networked the COMPS. if i remember correctly all i did was plug both computers into a router, then just created a home network, then just shared the folder that i wanted. now when i tried that i can read my friends labtop but when he tries to connect to mine it says that he doesnt have admin rights to get into itWhat about your firewall status on all machines?i turned mine completly off but im not sure if his labtops firewall was on or off is there anyway i can KEEP it on but make the exception to his? cuz on the firewall tabs it just shows progz taht i can allowThe simple answer is to make his shared folder writable and copy the required files to it.I WOULD use USB Cable without any networking headache.

Solve : Windows firewall not appearing?

Answer»

under control PANEL or under properties for the network connection (using AOL). Also, there is no DIAL up connection showing for AOL.

Why can I not see or change the windows firewall settings? and
Where does the AOL connection show?Do you have Service Pack 2 for Windows installed? AOHell uses proprietary SOFTWARE. Either dump the software and manually set up a DUN connectoid and IMAPI mail account or live with it as it is.

The Windows firewall is absolutely useless anyway - Disable it and search for Kerio 215.Yes - SP2 is installed and I NEED to keep AOL on the PC for my 90 year old grandmother. I don't want to get her started or me supporting anything else.
Would Kerio 215 be easy or seamless for her to use?Kerio 215 is very easy to set up and administer. Disable the Windows firewall via the SERVICES console.

Do you have an XP CD? Does it have the same service pack level as it installed on the hard-drive?

Have you tried loading the Recovery Console and typing chkdsk /r at the prompt?

Have you disconnected other peripherals and CD-ROM drive so see if the fault remains?

Maybe it is a damaged video card from time of original surge or maybe motherboard is damaged.

If you make a clean install then you should also make a drive image of operating system partition to make maintenance and restore more easy for the future.

No, but I don't thinkit'sthe video card, I get the windows loading screen, and then it flashes to the blue screen. When I had a similar problem, it was a hardware issue, and needed technical repairs. Eventually the Reset button circuit had to be severed to stop the rebooting, occurring repeatedly at startup. If you don't have the software savvy being asked of you in the various responses, I would go back to the manufacturer or a REPAIR shop, and have it checked ... if you need the computer any time, soon... It's just my view, --- maybe someone will troubleshoot what you need to fix to get it working. If it's under warranty you could BENEFIT significantly, and if not, you have to decide if you can lose your data, or you want to keep trying to get the PC working - but in my CASE there was a shorted circuit & the switch had to be cut out of the loop. Blue screens occured when the computer could not safely recover & save it's system files. I never really lost my data, as it was all a hardware issue. I'm just relaying how my situation went- I Quit having a working Reset Button. Luck to you- it's terribly aggravating, I know.

Thanks for the INFORMATION. I have often suspected that this was the case as far as this particular problem is concerned but never had anyone verify it before.

Many thanks.
The chances of it being the "reset circut" at fault are very slim indeed!
Either track down one of the many "tech CDs" and get a friend to burn it for you (Or by one of eBay ) or boot from the XP CD to a recovery console and attempt a few repairs. If you take this second option, run chkdsk /f first. If errors are found and fixed, attempt a normal boot. If not, run listsvc and post the output here.

I still say that your best bet is a fresh installation though.

Solve : Media Player cant play anything, local or in IE?

Answer»

This has been an ongoing problem for me but recently my way around it failed as well so I'm out of options.

First, my specs to get them out of the way. I'm on Windows XP Home Edition, 1.8 GHz processor, 512 MB DDR RAM, video card is an Nvidia RITA TNT2 Model 64.

As for the nature of the problem. For some time now, long enough for me to not remember when it started, my normal Windows Media Player hasn't been able to play most, if not all, video files I've attempted to play on it. Even wmv files dont work on the program anymore. I suspect a bad codec download as I have tried upgrading and reinstalling the program and neither brought me a SOLUTION. This problem also interferes with web browsing since any embedded video on websites encounters the same problem, except instead of an error message that it cant play the video, it just crashes Internet Explorer outright.

To get around it I downloaded Media Player Classic, which played anything I threw at it... until recently anyway. I must have downloaded a codec that didn't agree with it because today it became unable to play large video files and sucked up a massive ammount of CPU, averaging about 90% according to Task Manager. The video would be a black screen, and if I left it long enough audio would play, but never the video. I uninstalled the most recent codecs I downloaded and while it has allowed the program to open the videos again, it still takes up a lot of CPU (from 40% to 60%) and some videos crash the program after only a minute of playing, a minute where the video quality slowly degraded as it ran out of memory, apparently.

I'm not aware of anything else I downloaded that might have interfered with Media Player Classic's functioning, but it's left me without a way to view most of the video content on my COMPUTER and on the internet. I guess what I'm looking for is a solution, someone who's had a similar problem, a program that could identify the bad codecs on my system... or a way to BYPASS it again such as a different video program that could take over for Media Player. If anyone has a solution like this or knows how to fix these problems please let me know soon. Thank you.First of all, uninstall any codecs etc that you've picked up in the past. Now have a look at this post and FOLLOW the instructions CAREFULLY. Once we know you're clean, we'll deal with your codec problem.

Solve : wintcpmod.exe?

Answer»

What exactly is this? Is this something bad or good? Results on GOOGLE are somewhat mixed. Some say it's an upgrade of something else, while some says it's like some other hacked thingy. I -think- it also extracts some "DSS" thing into my registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software\microsoft\WINDOWS\currentversion\run. Ad-aware calls the registry thing a Data Miner, but when I went into Ewido Anti-MALWARE, it didn't show anything about this. I hear that Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program doesn't even show show that this is a "bad" program. Also, would this program have anything to do with "increasing half-open ports"?jayy_lum...... This is what I found out about that item. Where is it residing ?

The process belongs to the software Microsoft Windows Operating System TCP/IP Module by Microsoft Corporation (www.microsoft.com).

Description: wintcpmod.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows. KNOWN FILE sizes on Windows XP are 482816 bytes (75% of all occurrence), 495104 bytes.
There is no information about the maker of the file. The process is loaded during the Windows boot process (see Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). wintcpmod.exe is not a Windows system file. wintcpmod.exe is able to hide itself. Therefore the technical security rating is 6% dangerous.

If wintcpmod.exe is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32 then the security rating is 72% dangerous. File size is 482816 bytes. It is a file without information about the maker of this file. The program has no visible window. It is an unknown file in the Windows folder. wintcpmod.exe is not a Windows system file. The program uses ports to connect to LAN or Internet.

Important: Some malware can camouflage themselves as wintcpmod.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder.

dl65 Hmm... somehow it ended up disappearing.. anyways... the DSS thing is gone as well. So I guess this is solved? But I wonder how lol...Wintcpmod.exe aka tcpmod.exe is a remote control trojan or bot. Carry out the procedures outlined in this post and report back.
You absolutely must remove all traces of this and similar infections!!!!

If you have a copy of this file, could I ask that you archive it using WinRaR or similar and send it to me for further testing? I'll provide details as and when necessary.

Solve : Winword.exe starting automatically?

Answer»

Hi,

Winword.exe process is always running in my background right since computer logons.

I have checked the Run and Runonce registry keys or LOCAL machine and current user.
Also checked the msconfig.

From where other can it get started.A HijackThis log should reveal all.Good Idea,

I just forgot it.
Will update you what happens Now how do i analyse that info

I got stuck with that some time back also.Gotcha,

But couldn't find winword anywhere.Post your logfile here (You may have to span it over several posts) or upload it to some WEB space and post a link to it.I searched the startup items there.
Because its starting at the startup and that was a small one.

If you still want it tell me 8-)Have you checked startup folder and msconfig?Yes all,

I am thinking does any application require winword.exe

Solve : recovering files deleted from recycling bin?

Answer»

Monday, February 27, 2006 5:57 PM (NEW!)

I ABSOLUTELY need to recover a certain file containing important evidence for a court case that was deleted from my computer by a degenerate employee. He deleted it from the hard drive and I have tried various (approximately 10) programs to restore it, such as O&O Unerase, Recover my files, WinUndelete 2, File Recovery, Recovery Pro, etc. I also tried another method using hidden INFO2 index files, and even tried a SYSTEM recovery, but they didn't work.

I am aware of how files are deleted: the clusters of data are overwritten in the hard drive after they have been deleted from the recycling bin by normal computer processes (I know this isn't that good an explanation, and it may be slighlty wrong). I am ready for the most complicated, advanced explanation that might possibly provide an alternate data recovery method which will ALLOW me to retrieve that file.

Please help me! I NEED this file for an upcoming court case that I am unfortunately part of and unprepared for!

Please don't hesitate to give even the most convoluted response! I need all the help I can get. I am willing to spend ANY amount of time and money on this file's recovery, so even if you know of an extremely time consuming or expensive way to get the file, it will be appreciated.

Much appreciated,

Edgar

Some professionnal data recovery service is your only chance, and probably a slim one. If it were just deleted there would be a better chance but after writing data to the disk, system restore, INSTALLING programs to save it, etc. you made a bad situation worse. When that happens the best thing to do is to oremove thedrive immediately from the machine and not use it further at all. Sorry. A friend lost the drive, due to my efforts (NEAT huh).
If you can find the file in your BACKUP recovery for Word (autorecover) or in the Recycle bin, great!! I'm definitely NOT A SOURCE, but did have a similar problem. www. runtime.org

I got this program to find out if I could display the info I needed to recover it, then when I saw it worked, I paid (?about 70 dollars?) to get a key code and unlock it. Recover your data with GetDataBack Data Recovery Software - below, is the info from www.runtime.org- I used the GetDataBack for FAT, but maybe they have something more effective for 1 file.?.. thought I would pass it along-- that's how I found out about it too.

Runtime Software's data recovery software will help you rescue your lost or inaccessible files from any imaginable data recovery disaster.
Data Recovery is possible more often than you might think - even without having to send your hard drive to a data recovery service.

Our powerful, yet easy to use, data recovery tools are designed not only to undelete accidentally deleted files or partitions but also recover your data with GetDataBack after fdisk, formatting your drive, power failure, virus attack, software failure, or after deleting files, folders or partitions.

Runtime Software also offers a wide range of file system utilities and forensic tools as well as data recovery service for all kinds of logical hard drive failures and RAID reconstruction and recovery.

Realize, please- I don't sell it, but it helped me out, so I copied the info from their site. - I caused the loss of a drive's data, and needed to recover it. This helped me get probably 70-80% back. I didn't pay anything, until I saw what files I could recover, and knew I wanted to get them back.

So good luck- I know how you feel,
mkelley
They have overwritten probably. Professional staff may help you... :-?The first thing to do is to disconnect this drive from the system and quarantine it, under lock and key if necessary, until you're ready for the data recovery excercise. The act of merely having a hard drive connected in later Windows systems seriously jeopardises your chances of recovery.

I may be able to help with recovering at least some files but a strict regime must be immediately instituted if not already in place. Some details of filetype, size and location would be helpful as well as time and date of deletion and what action was taken and when.

If you carry out all instructions exactly (We'll have to converse via some private method obviously) and recovery fails, then forensic reclamation is your only and very expensive option. Quote

I have tried various (approximately 10) programs to restore it, such as O&O Unerase, Recover my files, WinUndelete 2, File Recovery, Recovery Pro, etc. I also tried another method using hidden INFO2 index files, and even tried a system recovery, but they didn't work.

Again, I think all of this hosed any possible chance.I would think so, but having said that, there are some very powerful file recovery regimes available. Of course, if the data has been overwritten, then he's lost without extremely expensive SPECIALIST forensic recovery. Even then, there's no guarantee of success.
I wonder if the prosecution/defence would finance this if it's so important to the case?

Solve : Autologon Setting?

Answer»

Hi,

How does one configure this VIA gdpedit.msc ?

I know it via registry.Gpedit>User Configuration>Windows SETTINGS>Scripts (Logon/Logoff).What will be the format of that script?? :-?I wasn't thinking clearly here. Of course, logon scripts don't come into effect until the user has logged on so this avenue is pretty useless. It looks like you're stuck with your registry hack or maybe TweakUI, from the Microsoft POWER Toys range.

Another method:
In the Start>Run box, type control userpasswords2 followed by enter.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and hit "Apply". In the "Automatically Log On", window that APPEARS, enter the password. OK out of it all.I know these things 8-)

I just wanted to find out whether there is an analogous entry in gpedit.

Solve : What the *censored* is wrong with my freaking network...?

Answer»

I don't understand the problem with it.

Awhile ago I came here talking about how I have a 4pc home network, some wired, some wireless. I explained how my router keeps spiking and disconnecting for no reason.

Well, anyhow, I got a new router. The router was pretty good at first (Microsoft MN700) but again, now it's spiking and disconnecting again. (Security is on this time.)

The computers on wireless seems to have the problem more often.

For some reason, when the computer starts up, sometimes it says I'm NOT connected but clearly I can surf the web.

The thing that has been annoying me most is that according to my network places, I have 4/6 bars of signal with the router yet I CAN'T connect to it. It likes to RANDOMLY kick me off and I can never get back in until a long wait.

Perfect signal...connecting...dead.

P.S. Is this NORMAL? I have a netgear usb wireless network adapter in my room and according to my network places, there is FOUR wireless networks AROUND my house but my router/DS/other wireless computer can't detect them anywhere on the house. I HIGHLY doubt there is 3 wireless networks around me, either that or my adapter can receive signals from FAR far away.Check them out. They are probably on the same channel (6) as you. Interference can cause lots of problems. Change to another channel.Care to ellaborate? Are the computers interfering with each other or are the networks interfering with each other?

Thanks.
The nnetworks are on the same channel battling for the same frequency. Change your's to another channel in your router setup. Try channel 8, then set one of the wireless to channnel 8 and see if that is a better CONNECTION. If so, change them all.

The computers could be interfering if more than one has the same name on the network. It's kinda like walkie-talkies. If two sets are on the same channel, it can cause you to hear the other conversations, except it tends to diminish your conversation. See, sometimes I can pick up a neighbor's wireless router for the same reason (Thought the signal to there is very weak, and not worth the trouble since I have my own.)

Good luck. Change the SSID of your router to something unique and memorable. That way, any nearby networks won't confuse things. Don't forget that you must USE encryption on any wireless network.
