Solve : Pointer just stays in corner of desktop?

Answer»

A friend of ours recently gave us an old GATEWAY w/98 on it. I got it cleaned up and running pretty well. I decided to do one last thing on it which was to change the pointer settings so it did not have the trail, my daghters both said they did not like it and I was setting the computer up for them.

After I changed the setting, the pointer went up into the left hand corner of the screen and just stays there. It looks like it is "trying" to work, because when I move the mouse it changes to the select "hand" and to the hourglass and strangely enough items on the desktop highlight when they are passed over although the pointer remains in the corner.

Has anyone had this problem?

PLEASE helpI have not had the problem, but the mouse control setting in the control panel, may allow you to adjust the mouse pointer to respond appropriately.
1) verify you are using a valid or generic mouse driver for your particular mouse still--- evidently you had one earlier.
2) you set the options to adjust the travel and settings of the mouse, so it responds, based on your movement during the time you are on the set screen for the mouse options, under the Control Panel umbrella. Review all options, to ensure they are set as you wish. Often you can say for mouse, to go automatically, to the Command foremost on the Foreground screen, so maybe that's clicked to ensure it goes to a command at top of screen? Go through all the options to verify you say what you want to happen.

I have not seen what you describe, but given it happening to me, that is how I would attempt to resolve it. It's simplistic, but if you have not tried it, you may need to do it. If the mouse and driver are wrong, you need to install the mouse with the appropriate mouse driver. (not much more detail I can provide here.)

Good luck-

mkelleyNot sure if this is pertinent at all, but if you have a wireless mouse, make sure the batteries are working well and that the "receiver" (don't KNOW what it's called) isn't too far away. My mouse wouldn't move for a while until I realized the thing it sends the signals too was too far away..

Again this only APPLIES if you have a wireless mouse.

That is usually set up like that with a default new WIN2000 or XP install. Nothing to worry about.

Solve : Trouble Viewing Documents in aBackupWindowsProfile?

Answer»

Hello! I recently did a Windows XP Home-Edition system RECOVERY, and backed up my FILES. After the system recovery was done, I had to make a new Administrator profile because my old one was not available.

I have looked for my backup files, and it is in my C Drive. To get to it, I clicked on C Drive ---> My Backup ---> Documents and Settings ---> Owner. I tried getting into one of my documents in the folder, "Owner", but I always get an error message (This file is not accessible. Access is denied). Would ANYONE have any clue on what I should do? I have an English paper due soon (It is already finished), and the paper is in my old profile. Thanks in advance!I figured it out. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=tech Thanks ANYWAYS!

Solve : Taskbar fustrations!!?

Answer»

Hi this is my first time POSTING. So there is the good ol taskbar at the bottem of my screen. Star a program and it appears on the taskbar. So one day i start my computer up and on the taskbar is multiple dividers that are (to me) useless. How can i get rid of them my programs are getting disorganized. Is there anyway to get rid of it?You probably need at minimum, to specify your operating system, and try to clarify what you mean. Often, programs in the Startup Menu, start each time you start the PC, and programs you left RUNNING as you shutdown, will often restart as they were 'running when you quit'. These all will CREATE boxes on your start Menu Task Bar, unless you prohibit them from appearing on startup, or exit them before you shutdown the PC. The more programs in 98 and XP, that you start, the more they condense and consolidate under a general program type, the less you have running, then the more separated they appear. If this is too rudimentary, I'm sorry but I can't tell from the description, what else may be the problem. BEYOND this, I can't offer much more information, so Good luck- mkelleyRight click on your taskbar, Select properties.

I think from now on you can takeover. Right click on your taskbar, select Lock Taskbar. In cases like this, it helps if you attach a screenshot.

Solve : Lost CD Case?

Answer»

All right, I lost the case (AKA threw it out in a fit of stupidity) to my microsoft word cds. I had to uninstall it a while back, and now I can't reinstall because i don't have the code. Is there any way to recover it? I heard you can call and pay for it, but then I also heard you can't do that anymore. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.If it's uninstalled and you don't have the number Microsoft is your only hope, and probably a "slim chance to none" proposition.Aw, crud. Well thank you for trying to help; it's greatly appreciated. No problem. I would be eager to hear what Microsoft has to say. The TERM "proof of purchase" comes to mind.I don't think that you can retrieve it after uninstalling the program but you never know.

Try using the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and see if that will do it.

Maybe you have a small Word booklet with the number on it somewhere.

[ch1046]You can also use Open Office, sponsored by Sun Microsystems, which will read all your Word .doc documents and excel, access and POWERPOINT as well.

Yes, Abiword is also a good Word processor if that is all you need.

Change the settings in your BIOS to make the CD-ROM the first boot device so that you can boot directly to the XP SP2 CD and commence the installation by deleting all old ME partitions, as it is necessary to remove all trace of ME.

XP will need to make a Primary partition of about 10240 MB (10 GB), as a rough guide, to install to and when XP is fully installed you can then use XP's Disk Management to make further partitions and full format them.

Make sure that your computer is not connected to the internet by unplugging the modem connection when installing and also make sure that your anti-virus program is installed before re-making the physical connection with the modem.

The first thing to do when you do go on-line is to update your anti-virus program and run a full scan before updating the operating system.

When installation is complete and to your satisfaction it is advisable to make a drive image to restore from before adding too many programs.

If you are an advanced user you can make a customised installation using nLite, any SERVICE pack which you need, and RyanVM's update package. (English)

Have you checked your computer for compatabilty with XP?At the new installation/WinUpdate stage, it's much more important to have a trustworthy firewall installed before anti virus software. The Microsoft "firewall" has more HOLES than Swiss cheese and it is not to be trusted!
For a FREEBIE, I recommend Kerio 215. Don't use the newer versions as these leave a lot to be desired. There's no substitute for a hardware firewall...Almost every hardware firewall in existence monitors only incoming traffic. Therefore, a hardware firewall offers no defence whatsoever where trojans and other forms of malware are concerned.Money, insurgency, revenge, kudos......The west has upset a lot of people in this world, many of them whose only methods of retaliation are via electronic warfare.

Solve : WinXP x64?

Answer»

Hey guys, I have a question. So, I ordered my copy of Windows XP through my school, where I got it at discounted price. My copy of WinXP came with WinXP Pro and WinXp Pro x64. My question is, I am planning on building a brand new machine and since I already have the 32 bit WinXP Pro installed and registered on my current machine, would I be allowed to install the x64 version on my new machine, or would I be REQUIRED to GET a new copy of the OS? Thank you for your time.Did you get one 25 DIGIT registration number or two? That should answer the question. It has a different product key number, yes. But that does not exactly answer my question. The answer is that one standard licence covers one machine. The EULA explains all of this. With a separate ProductKey number you can install it on a second computer.

Solve : Auto turn off?

Answer»

Is it possible that computer shut down automatically after a period of time? Sometimes I need to download sth and it take a long time. It becomes very late and need to go bed. So I want to make computer automatically turned off after a while. Is there any way?

thanks...VIRTUALLY any download manager will do this for you.Thanks.
Usually I run from MANAGERS. They bring a lot of useless and even dangerous to the system. So I prefer FireFox simply...
What about Scheduled Tasks? Is there any possibility to use it for this reason somehow? Or some kind of batch FILES via scheduled tasks...? I don't know but there must be the way. I just fee like... You could certainly use a scheduled task plus >shutdown.exe<.

A more elegant solution would be a program that checks to see whether or not the download has finished...

If you're doing an FTP download, you could use a batch file to download the file, then run shutdown.exe.There is a way using the XP shutdown command but I'll have to dig it out.

Not all download managers are accompanied by scumware but some free versions do feature ad sponsorship. This is no great deal and can largely be blocked via a firewall or HOSTS file entry.
There are many advantages to using download managers such as the ability to resume failed transfers. Quote

There is a way using the XP shutdown command but I'll have to dig it out.
There's a command:
Code: [Select]shutdown -t xxx xxx shows seconds. But it closes down downloads, however internet connection remains... :-?

But ROB's solution seems reasonable. I give a try right know.

Thanks all...
Use shutdown -s -t xxx which will fully shut down the computer after xxx seconds has elapsed.Thank you.
Both Shutdown.exe and your Command Backdate work like a charm.
I don't know why there're so much shareware stuff for that purpose... Quote
Virtually any download manager will do this for you.

Can you recommend one?

Solve : lost broadband/internet connections?

Answer»

i have a dell dimension pc.We use broadband and can use dial up.Everything worked untill last thursday23/02 when the broadband dissapeared. When trying to connect the computer said no dialtone. We tried dial up and instead of connecting at 39bps it connected at 4 then disconnected. The broadband connection is fine as I am using it now on another pc.We put in a webcam the previous week and all worked well any suggestions?Do you use a broadband modem or a router? Who is your ISP?adsl modem the isp is tesco (in the uk)Is it a Sagem, Voyager or a Speedtouch modem?
Is the ADSL light on the modem solid green? Are your filters correctly fitted?

I buy beans from Tesco.... I buy my internet provision from an internet SERVICE provider.the modem is an adsl speedtouch 300 when the modem is connected to the dell one light is gard green the other marked adsl is flashing.
at this time I am on an old pc and the light is hard green

tesco beans give me windforgot the filters must be right as I am on broadband nowUnplug everything from the USB sockets except the modem. Does it train to the DSL signal now?
If it does, your USB sockets aren't providing enough power for the items you have attached. Either buy a USB add-in card or leave something unplugged.

If it doesn't, reinstall the modem. A good tip here is to use the extended REACH drivers.
it cannot be the usb I have disconnected everything and it still does not connect worked fine b4 then stopped and this does not explain why the dial up has gone so slow.Is there a virus that gets arround the security that stops connections? If the DSL light is flashing then it's not syncing. Lack of sync is an exchange, line or modem PROBLEM. As the modem works fine on a different machine but the same connection linewise then it must be a driver or component on the affected machine that's to blame. Have you recently updated any chipset drivers, by Windows Update perhaps? Is there a reasonable restore point available?
If your dialup is slow with the Speedtouch plugged in then that points to a faulty modem, perhaps caused by lack of power.
The modem takes only minutes to reinstall and it's the first thing that Tesco "support" will tell you to do after checking filters etc.
You can post a HijackThis LOG if you like but I've never heard of malware that causes a USB DSL modem not to sync.we have reinstalled the drivers for the modem got new ones from tesco support.I have taken out the modem and then used dial up still slow. How do I system restore? or better still whre do I find it.The microsoft update is set on auto so I would not know
Try the drivers that I pointed you to. To launch System Restore, enter
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
in the Start>Run box. Choose "Restore My Computer To An Earler Time" and choose a date prior to your problems occurring.
Is dialup still slow if the DSL modem is removed from the equation?the dial up is slow with the modem in or out it is very strange
It sounds like a line fault (Internal or external, including filters) but the FACT that another system works from exactly the same wiring (You are connecting to exactly the same point via the same filter aren't you?) belies this.

Solve : Problem with fonts maybe???

Answer»

Hi I have for sometime a curious problem with my fonts or something.. A random letter appears to be lower than the others sometimes. In a window, in a dialog box, when writing in notepad but not in all applications at the same time. Sometimes it goes away by itself. Maybe it has to do with effects. I disabled them all but it still appears. I've already checked for my regional settings. Don't know what else could be wrong.. Can u help me? :-/

Virus/spyware/adware solution that you use on a regular basis is __________________.

Have you been monkeying around with your fonts? Changing desktop settings? Any pertinent info on when this started? Your operating system is ________________.I am fooling around with themes but the problem was obvious from the moment I installed windows. In the very first dialog window that appeared for regional settings during installation. But the first time I saw it i thought it will be fixed easily.. But it remains for MONTHS now.. :-/

My OS is XP pro with sp2. For the time being i use only nod32 as an antivirus. No adware installed yet [format yesterday..]I BET you have some already. Alexa for sure.
Download AdAware at least to find out.
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

What kind of video card is in there? Do you have the latest drivers?nlite removed alexa. at least it said so.. MSI 6600GT my video card. Latest drivers on. I don't think it has to do with video card though. It was also happening with my old radeon9600XT.And it does that after a fresh format and reinstall? Or just an over the top reinstall?after fresh format and reinstall. :-/Do you have just a plain jane PCI card you put in there to test the theory that it is not the card?no i don't have any pci video card to test that.Have any friends who would let you borrow one briefly? It would make it easier to isolate where the EXACT problem is.ok tested pci card and i saw it again. but i found something else. this time the problem appeared with S. meaning the capital S was a bit lower than the other letters in a word. i went to diplay properties> appearence > effects and I changed the method to smooth edges of screen fonts to standard. When i HIT apply the problem was solved instantly. But after an hour or so it reappeared with another letter>. I did the same thing and changed the method to cleartype. Again the problem was fixed but i can't do that all the time.. This problem needs to be solved and i'm so fed up with it anymore. here it goes again in the screen..
God i'm so tired with it. it's like this 4-5months now.. if anyone has a suggestion please help. i would much appreciated.

Does this happen with a default installation of XP from a vanilla XP CD - No themes, NLite not used etc?yes it was from clean installation. Nod32 was causing the problem finally dispite the fact of different hardware tests with it on. I was unlucky with Nod32 and I guess I'll have to move on with another antivirus software.

Solve : HELP...Have No IDea what Happened???!!?

Answer»

Ok....Where to begin (in short)...No problems, until I uninstalled my Norton 2005 and tried to install 2006. The first problem came in a pop-up while installing..."This file does not have a program assciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option Control panel." SO I shut her down and rebooted. Now, Nothing except my internet connection works. No Icon Shortcuts on my desktop (in fact there are no icons there now, just a box)I have noticed anything javascript cannot be opened as well. I only know basic computer stuff but these are some of the THINGS I have noticed. I tried to run the Virus Scan directly from Symantec but it is telling me my ACtiveX control is either not enabled or not working. I have absolutely no idea what to do know. I have XP,
Thanks in advance.you mean to say you shut the computer down while it was installing, or what? No, not while installing. Only after that error message came up and when the computer stoppped doing anything for a while. Can you get to system restore to at least get back to where you were? Sometimes the Norton virus is hard to get rid of. See Symantec's website for specific instructions. Here is where my lack of computer knowledge will get me! What systerm restore exactly? I tried starting in safe mode to go to Last Good Configuration but that didn't work. Or do you mean System restore through Symantec?Hit the start button, then select run. Type in msconfig. Then select Launch system restore. It's a button near the bottom.

Leave the defaults and then click next. Select a restore point, click next. You'll asked to confirm the DATE, click next if you're sure you've selected the right one. Your computer will now reboot, do a bit of work and your problem should now be solved, if not try another date prior to this. Good luck.

I wish I could! I literally can not click on anything, it either does nothing. Or in the case of going to run and trying to go to something specific I get the same error message as in my first post...."This file does not have a program assciated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option Control panel."

Any other ideas? Was your modem connected to the internet when you uninstalled your anti-virus program and whilst installing the new one?

This this on-line scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Looking at this forum many people have stopped using Norton and prefer to use AVG Free HOME Edition.

[ch1046]My computer was on (obviously) but was not connected to the internet at the time of uninstall/install of Norton.I will try the Housecall suggestion. Something is defintiely wrong with my Java script though. I get error messages that it is not enabled or active yet when I go to the browser options my java is defintely enabled. What gives? It might be a Trojan infection. You can use the on-line scan and also install Spybot SD, Adaware SE and Spywareblaster. Update these programs and run scans to check your system is clear of other infections.

Norton is very temperamental. Maybe 2006 is not fully compatible. Why did you change from 2005?

It is just a marketing ploy to make you spend more money than you need to spend.

[ch1046]I updated because it was free (after rebate) and I didn't want to pay to update my subscription for 2005. I will run the scans suggested and see.....keeping my FINGERS crossed.I downloaded the AVG Free but cannot get it to open. What do I do next? The Norton products are an absolute pig to REMOVE unless you use the provided removal tools such as SymNRT. Even then, success is not guaranteed.
At this stage in the game, unless my systems knowledge was pretty in depth, I would be inclined to give up and opt for a fresh reinstall of the OS and leave Mr Nortons rubbish where it belongs - In the bin!
For AV, I would recommend Kaspersky and for a firewall Kerio 215 is very good.Try this .exe fix - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

Solve : XP Shutdown/Restart Issue?

Answer»

I see that the shutoff/restart by itself issue is fairly common, mine has been doing it for sevearl days. I've been through the troubleshooting from this website, starting with changing the startup & recovery option of auto restart on errors, but it STILL does it. The hardware is seated properly and I haven't added anything new or updated any drivers recently, virus & spyware is clean and it even does this in safemode. It seems to run best in bios mode. The most recent software I installed is AOL's instant messenger which annoyingly auto-installed and defaulted my browser to the AOL browser and I don't have AOL. I'm at the end of my troubleshooting knowledge and I guess now I'm hoping a format (unfortunately) and a clean install of XP will take care of this. But how in the world do you install the clean OS when it won't run LONG enough? :-?First you check your power supply. No point doing a fresh install if the power supply is going bad. You could even try plugging your PC into a different socket. See if that helps. I'd venture a guess that your power supply is the problem. The fact that the machine reboots in Safe Mode points to an overheating problem. However, this may not be the case. What tools disd you use for the AV/malware scans? Thanks guys, I would hope it's not the power supply, it's only about a year or 2 old. I monitored the temp in the bios for about an hour and it didn't go above 52C. I used etrust for the av & pest patrol spyware, plus I used adaware after, then I used tweaknow for a registry scan. I noticed in the event viewer numerous errors for a file extension True Vector Services and iamdb.rdb, so I uninstalled the etrust firewall because I found out it was linked to those. The funny thing is it can work for a few days just fine and then start this whole shutoff thing again. When it shuts off it acts as if the plug was pulled and after 1 or 2 MINUTES it turns itself back on and reboots. In the bios screen it doesn't do the shutdown thing. This is by far the weirdest thing I've seen a pc do. I really appreciate the help!It depends on the maker of the supply as well as the current and what all is loaded on that machine. What is the make and model# as well as the reported wattage.I opened the case and there is no markings at all to tell me the make or power of the ps. I'm not sure how to tell the wattage of the ps either, but thinking back I thought I bought a 450w but I could be wrong, it could be 350w.

I built it myself A no name power supply that says 450w could still well be a hunk o' junk, especially with high end systems. If you didn't spend at least $50 on it I would suspect that. Do you have any way to test it?

You can check your temps with Everest for free:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlThat looks good, I'm going to try to get Everest to run tomorrow after I get home from work. Will that tell me the wattage of the ps? It looks like a helpful tool at any rate so I'll run it tomorrow for sure.Well, Everest is a no-go, the pc wont run long enough before shutting down. I can just get it to where I'm signed into my xp PROFILE then off it goes, then back on a minute or so later. Is there a way I can test the ps, and if I let it run on the bios screen and it runs without restarting wouldn't that mean the ps is ok, or is it ok just on the boot and when all the components get fired up it STRAINS the ps and shuts down...ughh I'm getting a headache! How can I know how much power I need?Think Antec and 400+ watts

www.newegg.comTo test if it's the PSU being overloaded, disconnect a few unnecessary components and peripherals such as USB devices, CD drive units etc. Thanks for your help, heres the result: I added a 450 watt XG Vigor power supply (couldnt afford the Antec) and so far it's running solid, 24 hours now. The only side note is my operating temp went from 52C to about 57C, and even hotter after I play games. On my board (Asus A7N8X Deluxe) is a set of plugs, one says chassis fan & the other is a different fan. What fan do I plug there because none of my fans have that type of plug? Does anyone use the system blowers?Do you have any additional case fans in there? Take the cover off and blow a fan in there and see what the temps do and provide a clue to the solution. The onboard plugs are probably for CPU, case and or gfx card fans. The CPU fan should be connected to the motherboard controller as it's monitored but case fans can be connected via the larger Molex type connectors.

Solve : No sound in DVD playback on Win Media Player?

Answer»

About 6 months ago I inadvertently removed the video decoder from my PC. I then downloaded and installed InterVideo DVD XPack for Windows XP. Using this I was able to play movie DVDs without any problems. However, since then, when trying to play these in Windows Media Player 9 or 10, or in RealPlayer, I can only see the picture without any sound, although music CDs play perfectly ok. My PC is running on Windows XP Service Pack 2.

The Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility shows Installed MPEG-2 decoders as:
InterVideo Video Decoder, IVIVIDEO.ax version 5.0.11.704,
MP10 Compatible, MCE Compatible and set as Preferred Decoder.

However, entering dvdupgrd /detect in the run function shows the following:
DShow SW:
Name: CLPPVSD.ax version 5.0.0.1031
Cyberlink Corporation
CRC32: 0x8a2d86b2
VID: 2
W2k Upgrade = no
Win9x Upgrade = no
LCID = 0809

Can anyone please advise me on what I should do to be able to hear movie DVDs in Windows Media Player?

I have limited, self-taught computer knowledge.

Regards,
Jeff.
Theoricas The Codecs package should put you right. Download the 5M version for full compatibility. Thanks, Backdated, for your kind response.

Theroica says: Before installing the Codec 3.0 Package (5,850KB) uninstall previously installed codecs (Divx, Xvid, etc.).
Being a LITTLE unsure, I would welcome any advice on how to do this uninstall, and presumably I should make a Restore Point before actually doing ANYTHING?

I don't know if this is relevant, but the DirectX diagnostic tool shows that my PC has DirectX9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) and all the self tests show no faults, especially on the sound tests in mono and stereo in both 8-bit 22KHz and 16-bit 22KHz.

ALSO, perhaps I should have said earlier, in my first posting, that playing DVD movies in WMP used to work ok until I had a problem with Power Director video editing and a technician at Cyberlink told me that after uninstalling it (prior to a reinstall) to go into the Registry and delete the Cyberlink Folder from Software in both LOCAL_MACHINE and LOCAL_USER. I soon FOUND out that doing this also seemed to have deleted my Cyberlink PowerDVD, which disappeared. From this point on my problem started.
Set a restore point and uninstall anything of any relevance. Now install the Theorica package.
PowerDvD provided the codec that you need and deleting it also removed the codec. You may find it easier to simply reinstall PoweDvD.Many thanks, Backdated,
Took your advice and deleted DivX, the only codec I could find in the Add/Remove function in Control Panel, then downloaded and installed the Codec 3.0 Package, and hey-presto everything seems to be working ok and I can now watch and LISTEN to movie DVDs and music CDs in WM Player and RealPlayer.

By-the-way, I couldn't reinstall PowerDVD as it came pre-installed on my PC.

Best regards,
Jeff.Theoricas full package is very good and above all, free and clean.

Solve : System Restore, and Hard Drive Reformat?

Answer»

How do I do both? I'm using Windows XP Home.System Restore - Start>All Progs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore then select the Restore point you want.

Hard Drive Reformat & Install XP - See here

Is there a particular reason you want to do this :-? If it's because you have a virus or two then you should use another option to get rid of them..

Good luck

Is there a downside to system restoring? I think I might have one or more faulty RAM sticks. But I don't know. I get a blu-screen, but it goes away in less then a second and my computer reboots. I got this computer like 3 days ago. I have done everything but system restore, and reseating the RAM. I am worried about reseating it because I mihgt cause static and kill it off, which could kill the warranty.Nevermind, I don't have a Windows XP disk. It came installed with my computer. My computer has been working fine the past like 5 hours, but it hasn't done much. I think it will be okay.Try running a memory test from a DISKETTE or from a CD just to put your mind at ease. When data corruption starts it can cause problems for the future.

Static should not a problem as long as everything is disconnected and you touch the bare metal casing with your left hand and hold the power button down for ten seconds before touching components.

Your clothing and the environment you are working in should not be capable of producing static either such as nylon and other synthetic materials.

You can ALSO run the manufacturer's hard-drive diagnostic test to see if there are any faults and run-

chkdsk /r

-from Windows for the same purpose.

With a new computer these are all good ideas as there may be displacement of hardware parts in transit and the computer may have been on the warehouse shelf a lot LONGER than on the retailers shelf, so it pays to run tests which run over the full surface area of the drive platters.

If you do find errors in memory, or bad sectors on the drive, you should refer to your warranty.

[ch1046] Quote

Nevermind, I don't have a Windows XP disk. It came installed with my computer. My computer has been working fine the past like 5 hours, but it hasn't done much. I think it will be okay.

If your computer has the facility to make a restore CDR(s) or DVD from a hidden partition or FAT32 partition on your hard drive you should do this at the first opportunity.

This computer had a 5 GB hidden partition and some new computers have a 15 GB FAT32 partition. The latter will show up in Disk Management.

The former may be DETERMINED by mathematical calculation if you know the nominal (or decimal) size of the hard-drive from which the binary size may be calculated and any apparently missing space, other than the numerical size reduction, caused by formatting will most likely be a recovery partition.

E.G. A 100 GB hard drive will be 93.13 GB (binary) after formatting.

[ch1046]

If this is a new computer and you're getting bsods and shutdowns, take it back and demand that it's made fully FUNCTIONAL or replaced.

Solve : pop up window size?

Answer»

I would like to make the pop up window default sizes to be wider - I have to manually stretch them eery time. For example, when you have to browse for a file and you use long file names, you can't read the last half of the name. I would also like it to default to details rather than list?See >this thread<.I don't think the OP was referring to IE windows.
Do you MEAN the file requester type windows etc?Whoops! You're quite right.

Hmm... I had a little plugin that used to do this on Win98. What O/S are you using, lsoul?Open a folder, stretch it to where you want it then choose...
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Screw around in there for a bit, it's typical windows double speak but if you click a few buttons it will remember the settings for all the folders.Yes, it is the pop up windows - say to select a file - that is in QUESTION. I use win XP SP2. So, it is not explorer windows I am referring to. But file save as, for example or in progs asking you to browse to or select a file through a pop up window. I would suspect that this is a registry edit to accomplish this?
Thank you for your input everybody.I believe WinBatch has provision for changing the appearance and SIZE etc of dialogue boxes and other window metrics.

Solve : winxp home says all floppy disks are not formatted?

Answer» COMPAQ p3, 550hz, winxp home
This a.m. it will not read floppy disks that it read last night.
Same message: disk is not formatted.
Most disks have msword files.
I am assuming that proceeding with formatting the disk will wipe the disk.
Any ideas?
thanks for a GREAT forum.
RossIt's LIKELY that the floppy drive itself is dirty or worn. As floppy cleaners are now virtually non-existent, replacement would probably be the easiest and cheapest option.
If you WANT the data, do not format the diskettes. The floppy drive was filthy.
Boy, do I FEEL stupid.
Thank you for the tip.
A month ago I had cleaned out the computer, but I forgot to check the floppy drive.

Solve : Wordpad question?

Answer»

I have WindowsXP, and whenever have some WORK on Wordpad and save it in my documents, I can never access it. The only thing I can do is print it, or email it before I exit Wordpad. I notice that a dialog box or a cooky always appears and directs me to install one of the Office2003 PROGRAMS during my access attempts. Is it true that Wordpad cannot be fully exploited without one of these programs, or is there perhaps something wrong with my system? What am I overlooking?
:-?

ThanksWordpad is a more or less standalone application and has no dependencies on any Office suite programs.
Have you tried "Save As"?Can you locate files you've created with Wordpad, using Windows Explorer? Are you saving your Wordpad files in the RTF (Rich Text Format) or Text format?

Backdated,
I have no PROBLEM saving Wordpad to several places. I just cannot those particular files.

soybean:
Yes, I can locate my Wordpad files, but my attempts to open them are always blocked.
They are being saved in RTFRight click a file, choose open with>other, select wordpad from the bottom of the list & tick the save box then ok.I misread you ENTIRELY. Sorry about that.
Go with Feds solution, but if it's Win9x you're using, select a .rtf file, hold down the shift KEY and then right click. "Open With" will now appear in the context menu. Thanks much guys, It works works perfectly.

Solve : How do I get rid of non-existent Removable Disk?

Answer»

Win 98 Windows Explorer shows a non-existent Removable Disk E: that is causing hangups, freezes and crashes in HP printer SOFTWARE. How can I GET rid of this non-existent disk?

Any suggestions would be appriciated.
Thanks, Ernie.Right click on > My Computer
                    > Properties
                    > Hardware
                    > Device Manager
                    > Brows & Select Your Removable Disk
                    > Driver
                    > UninstalledRemovable Disk did not appear in the Device Manager window.

It was much tougher than that. I had to delete a registry KEY in HKLM/Enum/ESDI it had a "UserDriveLetterAssignment" of "EE" for the non-existent Removable Drive E: (thats where Explorer was finding it?). Then I had to sort out the keys HKLM/Enum/FLOP and HKLM/Enum/SCSI to determine where my actual drives were and what they were labeled. Turns out Explorer was confusing my 3.5 Floppy Drive (should be A: ) with this non-existent E: It seems strange but the drive letters in Bios and Win 98 dont need to agree with each other. Anyway, at this point Explorer was now unaware of my 3.5 Floppy Drive, and assumed there is a 5.25 Floppy Drive. I had to tell Bios that my 3.5 existed and it was Drive A: and restarted.

The only options in Bios were 720 or 1.44 floppy, I remember that previously was 2.88 so still investigating, But happy now it works with no phantom drives.

Ernie OK
I was just making a surgestion
Well that work ernestbd nice of you to replyWell, more information for anyone who finds this useful.

Turns out that the HP All-In-One series printers have their flash card reader identified in the registry as a disk drive with
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\ESDI\HPZ\DOT4BRIDGE&DISK_HPZ12&0000DOT4&VID_03F0&PID_2911&MI_02&DOT4&STORE_HPZ&1DOT4USB&VID_03F0&PID_2911&MI_02&DOT4&1USB&VID_03F0&PID_2911&MI_02&2USB&VID_03F0&PID_2911&MY285D36KD0G

This allows the computer to assign the next available drive letter. It was apparently determined when the HP software was originally loaded (in my case that was drive E). However, the drive only appears to windows explorer when the printer is turned ON.

The HP software hang ups were actually being caused by the inability to access the floppy drive. Since the registry and bios disagreed, windows couldn't access the drive when the HP software STARTED and tried to gather info about what was on that drive. Fixing the bios wasn't hard and now drive E really does exist...at least sometimes. Hope this helps somebody else.

Ernest.

Solve : Turning off auto-start program?

Answer»

Does anyone know the access command to turn off the auto-start programs.
I remember going to the run window and TYPING in a command like ***config or something and it brought up a window where I COULD change and choose which programs started at boot-up.It's the MSConfig command that you're looking for but there are better means of achieving your goal.
Can I ASK what you want to disable? Thanks. I want to turn off some of the background programs that are running and DOGGING down start-up.HijackThis is the dé facto standard program for this but be careful what you disable and ensure that HijackThis is run from it's own folder. That WAY you can keep track of the backups it creates.

If you have any doubts whatsoever, post back with details.

Solve : Reformatting a second hard drive.?

Answer»

Hello, I just bought a used COMPUTER with Windows XP Pro. I had the computer guy install my old hard drive as a slave unit. I moved the files off of the old drive that I wanted to keep and deleted everything else.

When I tried to format the slave drive, windows just says "Unable to format. Drive E: can't be formatted". I'm just going to use this drive for extra storage and to store a backup copy of Windows.
How do I format USING ms-dos? and will Norton Ghost work for making a backup? Is it a FAT based drive? If so, boot via a diskette, Fdisk and format it. Be very careful that you don't operate on your boot drive. Unplug the power and DATA cables if you're uncertain.
Ghost will work just fine in that configuration. You might try starting the format command from a Command Prompt WINDOW, opened via Start, All Program, Accessories, Command Prompt. Type: format e: and HIT Enter.

Solve : How to System Restore when I can't use "run" box?

Major PROBLEMS with my computer form who knows what. How can I run System Restore when no matter what the START>Run will not work. When I click go (for ANYTHING a CD, a command...) I get this "The FILE does not have a program associated with it. Create an association in the Folders Option control panel."

I have XP and a laundry list of problems that I have not yet determined the cause of.Ok, thanks. Can you tell I am new to all this?jbean, exactly what are you typing in the Run box when you try to use System Restore? You should be able to start System Restore two ways. One is from Start, Run; type msconfig in the Run box, then click on the button named "Launch System Restore". The other way is from Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

If all of the above, INCLUDING me, DELETED our posts we could stop this before it gets out of hand.
I'll delete last.

Edit: Thanks Backdated, now all we need to do is bring the 2 beans up to speed.

Solve : Unable to start up/get to safe mode, NTLDR missing?

Answer»

Unable to start up my machine.

NTLDR is missing

Specs of my computer:

OS window xp
Intel Pentium 4
Desktop

I've searched and read many many articles and information related to this
problem, I've also asked and seeked help from many people with some computer
knowledge (techs maybe, not sure how much they know), I've got some advises from
them. I've tried resolving the issue by following all kinds of similar
instructions from those people, some were from forums, some were just found
online.

However, I got "stuck" at some point. I can't even get to SAFE mode where
Windows Advanced Option would normally shows when I tap F8. I tried copying the
3 files I needed (NTDETECT.COM, NTLDR, BOOT.INI) from another XP machine.
Got those copied to a floppy disk,
screen displays "file cannot be copied onto itself" or " 0 file(s) copied..."
I even tried copying them to a CD, didn't work neither, same messages displayed.

People suggest me these ways: 1) Safe Mode 2) Safe Mode with Cmd to Sys Restore
which is simply a cmd prompt in safe mode 3) Safe Mode with Neworking 4) LKG or Last Known Good Configuration
Well, I'm "stuck" at the safe mode like I mentioned.

I do not wish to formatt or lose any files any programs or anything I had before I encountered this problem,
I've not backed up any files yet.
I spent so much time trying to figure out what else I could do in order to help
resolving the problem. It's very bothering that I can't use my own computer like
I always do before this problem occurs.

Please help, I seriously need to get my pc working.

Thanks.I'm sure others will be along to advise the same things you have apparently tried without success. (That message about not bering able to copy a file to itself is a little worrisome. Did you try to do this with some sort of command prompt attempt?)

What if you could save your files? Are you then able to format the drive and reinstall Windows? You could always boot with a Linux Live CD (free) and then copy the files to a pen drive, across a NETWORK, etc.

www.knoppix.com for a file that you have to burn as an ISO and then boot your machine with. It writes nothing to your HARD drive to run, but can access your data and save the day!The files should be on a bootable diskette and the hard drive must be accessible to that diskette.
The syntax for each file will be:
copy filename.ext c:

If you have an XP CD, boot to a repair console and type fixboot and then REBOOT after typing exit to quit the repair console. Quote

I guess I'm gonna have to try doing a repair installation see if it'll turn out better.
If you mean doing the A:/ copy to C:/ cmd prompt, yes, I did try to do that. I guess it's just not easy to have a file copied to the drive. No idea why can't, if "bootable disk" means a formatted floppy, I think there isn't a problem with the disk because it's absolutely got nothing on it. But I heard that using this bootable disk method usually has a low succeeding rate. So, I went out and bought an XP CD, hopefully the repair install will turn out as I'm expecting. I've waited too long and got tired of this NTLDR thing!

Thanks you guys. Quote

The three files on the floppy. Was the floppy formatted on an XP computer?

Was the choice made to MAKE an MS-DOS startup diskette? It should NOT have, just a full format is all that is required then simply copy the three files to the floppy.

The boot.ini file must have the same configuration as your own boot.ini file. If it does not you have to edit it so that it suits your computer.

Have you tried loading the recovery console and typing - chkdsk /r - then putting the floppy with the three files into the A: drive and re-booting to see if it will find and start the main drive?

[ch1046]Other things you can do. Run a memory test. Run drive makers diagnostic diskette to see if your hard drive has a problem. Check inside of cabinet to make sure that everything is OK.

You must take proper anti-static measures before touching any components. Make sure you have disconnected all power cables.

An approximation to the typical READING from a BIOS or an external software utility is expected to be around 60ºC-65ºC or lower.
Although "normal" operating temperatures are not specified for AMD processors, there are maximum operating temperature ratings that must not be exceeded. The maximum operating temperature of a processor may be determined by the processor's Ordering Part Number (OPN)

Based on this , which can be found on AMD's WEBSITE ....... your operating temperature of 41 degrees C. would appear to be fine . Out of curiousity , what do you think the temp should be ?

Is this a pc you built ? If so did you use the recomended heat sink and the appropriate high quality thermal paste .......( this could be part of the issue )

Solve : cdr101 - not ready; bad cmd or file name?

Answer»

7 year old computer sluggish, so I reformatted. However, Upon attempting to reinstall windows 98, the error message was cdr101 not ready reading drive E. I took the case off and ensured all the flat ribbons were firmly attached. Now the message is bad COMMAND or file name. Why can I not complete setup? What do I do next? Please help soon.A quick googlle search turned up these links. Check them out:

<-------------------I'm assuming that you booted from floppy or CD and arrived at an A:\> prompt. If so, enter the following at that prompt:
md x:\setup where x: is any hard drive or partition
xcopy /y y:\win98 x:\setup where y: is your CD drive

This will copy the installation FILES from the Windows98 CD to a folder CALLED setup on your chosen hard drive/partition. You can now run setup from that folder in the normal manner but without the need for the CD.
However, the xcopy operation is likely to fail because of a dirty CD or a knackered/ill fitted CD drive unit.

Solve : how to stop programs from loading at boot?

Answer»

winxp home ed. just installed.
Compaq P3 550 hz.
Several programs load when I boot up.
I am stumped: this seems simple, but I cannot find my way to the answer.
I want to stop these programs from loading every stinking time I start the computer. I do not want to delete them, just start when I choose.
Please do not laugh at me, for I am trying to learn.
OK, this is pretty stupid, when compared to the other tech stuff you all post.
Thank you for your kindness.
RossStart-> run -> msconfig ->ok

The last tab should be startup!

This is KINDA of trick so becarefull in here,.. but here is were every program that starts up from the time windows loads is held.

when your done that go to the general tab.. and select SELECTIVE startup...hit ok.. and restart.. it should prompt you that changes have been make .. and just click the box that pops up!You can usually stop them from starting up from within each program, I think it's a CLEANER way to do it because I suspect msconfig allows the programs to start at boot up then turns them off again (messy).
Tell us what programs are doing it & we may be able to guide you through it.
Once you are sorted out you may wish to look at the unwanted services xp is starting too, your P3 will be even happier then.I use StartUpMonitor to control these types of programs. You can find it at http://www.mlin.net/StartpMonitor.shtml

good luck! Another utility for controlling programs loaded at startup is Startup Cop, from PC Magazine.Thank you for the input.
The msconfig changes worked fine, but I will follow up with the other suggestions.
I loaded a tax program from taxact.
The uninstall screen appeared at boot, the tax program started, the readme file for the taxes, msmessenger, realplay, and a couple others.
I believe it is not simply not starting, but more like turning on and off, due to lots of little clicks and hard disk noise when booting, but then all is quiet.
So, on to the start up control utilities.
This is a great place.

Then you try to hijack the thread even further, so I tell you to shut up because I'm sick of you doing this to legit threads. In fact, you IGNORED my suggestion to complain in the IE thread about *censored*. I agree, in a PERFECT world *censored* wouldn't be here. But this is NOT the place for that kind of DISCUSSION. Get that through your thick skull.

Basically, as you said when you were first banned: F*ck off. Quote

Solve : Please help stop error message!?

Answer»

Ok sometimes when I am browsing the internet or listening to music or am on programs the computer reboots randomly. It tells me this:

Stop: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005 0x6F53A30c 0xEF0326AO 0x00000000)

or it somtimes says this

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop: 0x000000D1 (0xE23B4000 0x00000001 0x00000001 0x77B70300)

the message says it may be something with the drivers but I don't know which ones. It said to update BIOS and I have but it isn't helping...do you guys have any suggestion?Google brings up lots of info - is this any good to you??

Several things come to mind.

1)First run free RAM test at www.memtest86.com

2)Do you by chance have a VIA IDE controller? (No info about your system so we are forced to guess?)

3)Do you have a legal Windows CD to reload if ncessary?

4) Seems to be a problem with certain configurations and Symantec products.Yes I have a VIA Bus master IDE controller...what kind of computer info do you need?Do you have Norton Antivirus, or any other Norton product?Yes I do I don't use it a LOT though...is there any other info you need?Did you click on Dusty's 'this' link?
We should make these links a little more contrasting, they are easy to miss.Try uninstalling Norton and see if this resolves the issue.

AVG Free is less problematic and free:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1I clicked the link I found a solution to the second problem but I am still GETTING the first stop error. I uninstalled Norton but it didn't work. I downloaded MEMTEST but I have no idea how to use it.Now need to know.....

1. Is there any message PRECEDING or following the stop: 8E message :-?.
2. What are your pc specs :-?. Hardware & software please.
3. Did you install/re-install any software/hardware immediately before the error messages begain to appear :-? Including any upgraded drivers.
4. Did you change any hardware settings or do a bit of tweaking/overclocking :-?

ThanksThe stop messate says I may not have enough disk space...or something wrong with drivers...or I need a BIOS update. I updated my BIOS already, I checked the Drivers none of them seem to have anything wrong with them. Here are my specs:

My computer is a hp pavilion 524c
disk drive:ST380020A
Display adapters: S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR
Primar IDE Channel
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
AMD Athlon XP 2200 Speed: 1800 MHz
Avance AC97 Audio for VIA audio controller
legacy audio drivers
VIA CPU to AGP controller
Via Standard CPU to PCI bridge

uhhh what else do you need to know?

We need to know your free space on c: drive... (not the exact dimension, just an approximation: 10 Megs, 1 Gig etc)i have 46 GB of free space and my whole c drive can hold 69 GBIf you have an onboard NIC, try disabling it via the BIOS.

Solve : Default New Window Size?

Answer»

Okay, so this might be a softball, but how do you change the default size of a new window (cntrl-n) in Win 98 IE 6.0? Mine recently changed (by itself??) to annoyingly small.
See >this thread<.

Any mod want to shift that thread into Q&A (or provide another answer there)? It's been asked at least three times in the couple of weeks I've been here. You can write it clearly step by step and post yourself. Then MODS may edit/or not it and lock it. Anybody is allowed to post now.Close all other windows and open a new IE window. Manually drag the new window until it's the size and position that you want it. Now hold down the Control key and left click on the small Explorer icon on the left hand SIDE of the title bar. Select close from the drop down menu.

Internet Explorer opens differently according to where it's launched from. The above applies to a newly OPENED window. If the same problem occurs when a browser window is launched from another browser window, close the original window(s) and follow the instructions above.

Solve : HD Partitioning Questions...?

Answer»

Why would ONE wan't to partition their hard drive?

How would I go about partitioning my own hard drive?

All hard drives are partitioned into at LEAST one drive. Some people LIKE more than one to keep their operating system separate from their APPLICATIONS and/or data. It requires a format and reinstall of Windows unless you BUY some software like Partition Magic, so that's something to think about.

Solve : Problems with XP Clean Install?

Answer»

I have a HP zd7000 laptop with Windows XP Professional on it. Over the past few months I have been having problems with my computer occasionally blue screening and restarting itself. I never bothered to record the error because it only happened occasionally. However, yesterday I TURNED my computer on and it immediately blue screened and restarted. I turned it back on and it did the same thing. Another try yielded the same results. So I decided that something like a virus must be really messing up with my computer and I was going to format my computer and do a CLEAN install of XP Pro.

I found the XP CD that came with my computer and I popped it in and restarted. I chose the clean install. I formatted my hd. Everything seemed to be going along just fine. Then it started copying the windows files from the CD onto my computer. At about 40% an error popped up saying that ______ file cannot be found. Options were to retry, skip the file, or abort the installation. I tried retrying it but it didn't work so I skipped the file. On the very next file the same thing happened. Then the next file. Then the next. Every file beyond that 40% mark would not copy onto my computer. After I skipped the rest of the files a stop error came up saying that it is restarting my computer because something was not properly installed (I was like duh XP didn't install properly).

I tried the whole thing again. Same thing. I checked my CD and it is unscratched. I used it not too long ago to do the same thing. I went downstairs and grabbed another XP CD we had lying around and the same thing happened. My brother let me try his Windows 2k CD as well. The copying of those files get to 51% and does the same thing. ______ file cannot be found. I can't finish a Windows installation and I know it is not because of faulty CDS.

What could be CAUSING this to happen? Could it be a virus or something? I am completely at a loss.Boot from a Win98 bootdisk, run Fdisk, elect to delete all partitions, remake your partition(s) and then format the drive. Formatting alone won't necessarily destroy all viral traces.
Having said that, it may not be due to viral activity - The blue screens appear for a reason and you must take note of what they're telling you.

After formatting the drive, run Scandisk with surface scan on.
Now run MemTest86.

Solve : No found internet??

Answer»

Hi,

I just REINSTALLED windows(WITHOUT formatting my harddrive), and when it was finished I tryed connecting to the internet through my router, which works, and my computer didnt work. I'm almost positive it isnt the NETWORK card because it's built into the motherboard, and it was working the day before.Does the network card appear in Device Manager? Is it enabled?
Is your network correctly set up? Does the NIC get an IP ADDRESS?
MUCH more detail is needed. What problems were you having requiring a reinstall? I personally never recommend an "over the top" as you describe, because usually whatever problems were there are still there. One of my games kept messing up and it was suggested that I do it by several people.

Solve : Copying info to a disk?

Answer»

I am wanting to learn how to do the following. I am wanting to start copying programs or whatever you would call them to a cd. I have Windows XP Pro, with SP2, with only Windows Media Player 10 installed. My son burns music with Media Player with no problem.

But say I want to copy CCleaner or Spybot, to take to my daughters house and load into her computer. Or say I want to copy a modem driver to install in another computer. Will Media Player do this? I don't want to waste a disk, so I am asking what I need first.

I am from the load it on a floppy, days. Which did not have enough room to load this stuff anyway.

Thanks, Fordtruckmaniac..... I just tried to move ccleaner into the media player LIBRARY ......... so I could burn it ........ ccleaner is in a format not supported by media player ....... So I would have to say the answer is no..........
See if you can locate a copy of Nero or some other burning software ...then it will be no problem.

dl65 I've recently been trying out a few of the free CD/DVD burners. So far the ONE I have had the best results with is the free edition of >DeepBurner<. Highly recommended.Fordtruckmaniac, you can do this without any additional software. It's built-in to Win XP. See Burning CDs in Windows XP, especially paragraph 2, titled THE INBUILT SYSTEM IN WINDOWS XP.

By the way, another neat way to transport such files to another computer nowdays is a USB flash drive, assuming the destination computer has a USB port. A 128MB flash drive would be plenty large enough for such use. Quote

Actually my daughter does have a Nero disk. It came with a DVD burner and CD re-write drive I put in her computer.

I guess the DVD part would not matter, it would just use the CD Re-Write program?

robpomeroy, I will Google Deepburner and have a look.

soybean, I will check out your link as WELL.

What about ISO, I have seen that mentioned on here? I used the search function on here but did not really come with what I tought I remembered reading on here.

Thanks,
You can't copy or burn to disk programs- You need to find the .exe file and burn them to disk. CCleamer is able to be brunt to disk if you have the .exe file you have not keeped it on your computer down load it again. Ojas
How about this for an example.

I have only one CD-RW drive on this computer.

My wife has some computer games for my grandaughter on cd disks.

Now say I want to copy these children games to another disk to send home with her.

What do I need to do?

Thanks, Fordtruckmaniac...... Well you should put the disk you want to copy in the cd drive ....... and then use the explore option to look at it ...... copy all files that you see into a folder you will create on your hard drive. Once you have the files on your hard drive .......remove the cd from the drive ....put in a blank cd ...open your burning software and drag the contents of the file you created into the burning program and burn it .

dl65

OK I have a game in my drive bay now. It takes me to, as if I would open "My Computer" and select the D drive to open the disk. This particular disk has 4 files on it.

I am not seeing "Explore" option, right clicking or any of the options at the top of the page.

Please forgive me, I think the saying is right "its harder to teach an old dog new tricks".

Thanks,First of all, copying game CDs etc is in the main, illegal but if you want to copy a whole CD, you'll need CD burning software such as Nero 6 onwards. In the main, Nero is self explanatory - Just read the help files and it's easy.

It's important that "Show all files" etc is turned on via the Folder Options applet.

If you want to copy a few files to a CD, then XP has it's own CD burning service. For ease of use, make a folder and copy all the files you want to burn to CD to that folder. Remember that you'll need the installers for programs, they cannot just be copied from your Program Files folder!
Once you have all the files that you want together in one place, select them, right click and choose "Copy". Navigate to your CD writer, right click and select "Paste".
Open the CD in Explorer, right click and select "Write these files to CD".Game wise, I'm talking about games that help with math or writing or Barbie. My granddaughter is 6.

And I was saying "for example".

And another for instance, would be copying many old, family photos I have stored in "My Documents". It would take many floppy disks to hold them all.

Thanks for the help.

Fordtruckmaniac....

Create a new folder on your desktop ....... and name it ANYTHING you wish.
Go to My Computer .......
Put the disk you wish to copy in drive D ...........
Once you see the name of your drive D change to show the name of the disk you have in there ......... right click on the D: drive and you should see these options .......

Look at the image I attached ....... I have placed a game in drive D...........
I go to my computer ......put the mouse on the game name I see and right click and choose EXPLORE ......

dl65

Fordtruckmaniac.........Next once you have clicked on explore , you will see the files ........ ( mine has many ........ yours only 4 ) click on Edit then select all and they will all be hilited ......... Then once hilited right click on any of the high lighted area and select COPY .......... Now go back to your desktop and right click on the new folder you created and select PASTE. It will take a moment or 2 for the info to be copied into the new folder ......... Now you can remove the disk thats in your D: drive and put in a blank cd .... open up Nero .......and drag the new folder you created into it and burn the new disk .......

dl65 The copy and paste technique won't always work. It's better to copy the CD to an image (Use Neros image feature) and then burn the image to CD. Even this method will prove unsuccessful in many cases because of copy protection routines.
As for the photos etc, simply drag and drop to your CD drive and XP will do the rest. Thanks for the help.

I have some CD-RW disks now. (I have been told you can erase these) And i'm going to have at it.

Thanks.

Solve : unable to view some web pages?

Answer»

hi there everyone,

as you can see this is my first post, and i HOPE someone out there can point me in the right direction.

i do not even know if i've put this in the correct forum, so i dont mind if i am moved, any how here goes.

my son RECENTLY bought a new laptop, win xp,sp2, bulldog security, ie 6, i set up a wirless router/modem for him to go online with broadband. it worked ok for a while but now he is getting the "page connot be displayed" message, the strange thing is that this is not happening on all pages, just certain ones. i tried everything i could think of with no success, so i then brought the laptop to my home to give me more time to work with it, lo and behold it worked no problem, using my wireless network all the sites that he could not get onto at his house worked ok at mine!! so, i took the laptop back to him and what do you know it would not access the sites again, i am not talking about anything risky just normal everyday sites.none of the settings were altered so how can this be, if it was a router problem at his place would that not stop all internet access?

i hope someone out there will take pity and point me in the right direction,

                                    many thanks john d
waft.... Well your test results indicate that there is nothing wrong with his laptop . It sounds like he has neglected to tell you that he probably made some changes to the network settngs at his location .......
I would be purging all settings on his end ....... uninstall both the modem and the router ...... then start from sratch ........ then things should work as before .

dl65 dl65,
thanks for the reply, i have just looked at the spec for the router:- this is it--

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6768061.htm

and it has got "keyword blocking", as most of the sites that he goes onto are truck or trucking related (he is a 11 year old truck nut) i think that he must have inadvertantly somehow blocked all related sites if that is possible. i cannot look at it untill tomorrow, when i see him next but i will definately be following you suggestions, will let you know in due course how i get on.

many many thanks for your help inthis matter, john d.well i gave it a try,

still the same, i could not find anything in the router settings that could explain it, i even uninstalled it and reset to factory settings and it still would not access certain sites, there seems to be no consistant pattern to the inaccesible sites, tommorrow i am going to call the router makers helpline and see if they can SHED some light on this matter, will keep you's informed.

            john dSORTED!!!!!

thank you for all the help but it turned out that there was a known fault on the router, i e-mailed the makers and got this back:-

Technical Bulletin

Brand - Cable & Wireless
Product code - HSADLSR15CW3
Description - ADSL High-Speed 108mbps Wireless router

Issue – When connecting to the internet with this router only, some websites are available with other websites either not being seen or displaying problems.

Reason – Within the router settings there are settings for DNS servers. Since this model was introduced the UK DNS server default addresses have changed and so the default settings do not translate typed website addresses into their correct IP addresses.

Fix – Short term fix is to DELETE the routers default DNS addresses and so force the router to obtain new addresses via the customers ISP. See below for details.

To force the router into obtaining the new DNS addresses please log into the router set-up screen then select from the menu on the left hand side WAN Configuration > DNS and you will see a screen which displays the current Primary and SECONDARY DNS addresses . Go in and delete the numbers in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS boxes and then click the Apply button. Then close down the Internet browser Window, wait for 30seconds then continue with your Internet browsing. This will force the router to retrieve the new changed DNS addresses from your ISP.

Once logged into the router set-up screen select WAN Configuration > DNS and you will see the screen above. Go in and delete the numbers in the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS boxes and click the Apply button. Then close down the Internet browser Window, wait for 30seconds then continue with internet browsing.

This cured the fault, and i hope it can be of help to other members in the future.

                          thanks, john d.

Solve : Safe Mode worked, but Normal doesn't??

Answer»

Okay, I run a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer as my main home computer.

My problem could have started when I pressed my keyboard's Power button for my computer to shut off, which it did. Later that night I came back out and tried to turn it back on. It came as FAR as the Loading screen (the one with Windows XP on it with the moving bar on the bottom of the PAGE) and it just stays there.

When I restart it from that point and wait, I get the option for Safe Mode. I try Safe mode and it works, at least twice. Now that I had my computer try to restore itself, Safe Mode doesn't even work anymore...it just just sticks at Mup.sys and doesn't move.alright, first try and reset CMOS if you can then reboot in safe mode. If you get that far, click on my computer and right click on your hard drive (C: drive) , then to shared and make sure that you dont have it set as private or anything like that. see if that worksThat's how it's already made. I have two accounts on it, three if you account Admin. So your drive(s) arn't set at private or anything? Cause this is exactly how it happend for me and my mom's laptop....It had XP pro and it WOULD boot up to the screen where XP Loads and the bar goes across the bottom, then it would just start over again.....so what i did was i manually turned it off, disconnected the power supply, waited a few minutes, then reconnected and tryed again.....i booted up in safe mode and was snooping around her computer to find the cause...i right clicked on her C: drive and went to PROPERTIES then to security or sharing, something like that, and i noticed that her drive was set as "Private to All" so i changed it and now it BOOTS up fine. so make sure that your drives are set to the wrong settings. You'll find that the driver that's loaded after mup.sys is failing. Can you boot to a repair console?

Thx in advance to whoever can help me.Try re-installing the servicepack maybe? Have you went to Windows Update and updated your computer after the servicepack install? if it still freezez, might be a virus, or maybe spyware. If you have:

1. A PROPERLY configured firewall
2. Properly configured and up-to-date AV

Uninstall SP2. Revert to "last known good".

SP2 is aimed at those who don't, won't, or can't properly secure their systems. Third party software works better and the problems with SP2 far outweigh the benefits. Many of MS own APPS will not even work with it. Quote

Specifications are fine and certainly it should not be freezing up.

Better to do a clean install with a slipstreamed XP CD using nLite and adding RyanVMs update pack so that you can burn a new CD and get a clean unattended install first time.

Then re-install your other software and see if any incompatability problems arise.

When all is as it should be make a drive image to be able to restore the system easily.

Strange really to have more than one calendar on one planet.

It may be a bit late but just to add that SP2 failing to install is generally CAUSED by AV running or by infections being present.

my dad and is tryin to LOAD windows xp pro in DOS MODE onto a western digital caviar 120gig sata internal 3.5" hdd, and it comes up with this error:

stop:

C000221 UNKNOWN HARDWARE ERROR
\SYSTEM ROOT\SYSTEM32\NTDLL.DLL

apperantly it is the root drive, and probably a .dll to do with windows NT, im not sure though, if anyone knows how to fix it tell meGoogle for info... but why in Dos mode :-?

Here's one of the Googled responses>>>

"IMHO...Insert XP cd and restart. Delete both partitions and reformat USING the XP cd. If you cannot boot from the CD-ROM, you can download the setup files from the Winblows support and write directly to floppy and then boot from the floppy instead. The floppy boot will write all your setup files needed and then prompt you for the CD. It WORKS for OEM copies of XP. If I remember correctly, there wasn't a difference between Home and Pro but double check."ok, ill TRY that thanks it was off of the cd though, but ill tell emBoot from the XP CD and press the F6 key when prompted. You will need the SATA controller driver on a diskette.

Solve : Windows XP or AOL Problem??

Answer»

I have Windows XP and I use AOL dial up. I seem to get this error message alot "AOL Not Responding" across the AOL top bar and everything kinda freezes up for a couple MINUTES. Is this an AOL problem or my computer? Its been doing it for a few MONTHS off and on. ThanksI'd say it was an AOL problem. I use AOL messenger and once in a while it'll do that to...plus from what i hear AOL really blows chunks in their customer satisfaction. AOL is your ISP right?Yes, AOL is my ISP..........I was wondering if it might have something to do with the settings for connection speed? No,

The AOL Program uses alot of your Systems resources,

Which Version of AOL are you using and what is your System Specs?

SodaI'm using 9.0 SE and the specs shows "at RECOMMENDED levels"I saw on today's news they were increasing the rates another $2 a month, by the way.MM ok,

What I would do would be to downgrade the AOL program to AOL 7 or something that does not require as much power to run.

Then I would get RID of AOL once your contracts up, or stay with AOL as your ISP but use MICROSOFTS Internet Connection Wizard to connect and loose the AOL program but remember If you use Microsofts Connection, you will need to keep the Modem Driver. :-/

SodaThanks for the info! http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/internet/connect/dialup/dialxp.shtml

That will show you how to set it up, remember when you set up, your username is your full e-mail address

Solve : wireless doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me out here.

I have a HP laptop (model: Pavilion ze4300) and it's running on XP Pro. Just lately, i'd like to connect it to the network wirelessly and it doesn't work. Well, not exactly.

This is what happens
I use a wireless card, Netgear WG511T and a Netgear Access Point in the network. Before i installed it, i read the manual saying i have to install the driver first before plugging in the card to the laptop and i did it.
It worked fine once the driver has been installed and the card plugged in plus all the setting/configuration set up correctly. Now, because i want it to be SECURE, i use the WEP encryption and set the KEY up. It worked beautifully and more importantly, the encryption was enabled (i saw this via the network connection under control panel). Then, i restarted the computer just to check that it can reconnect itself to the network wirelessly. I realised that the encryption was DISABLED after rebooting the computer then i checked the netgear wireless card utility there, there is a key there, and i don't understand why it by itself turn the encryption off and obviously i was unable to connect to the internet because it's not connected to the access point.

Then, i RETYPED the key in and press "apply" button. It took ages to acquire network address (IP) before it died by showing limited connectivity.

It'd work if uninstalling and re-installing it back (i MEAN the driver) but failed to work after rebooting the computer. BTW, i have also made sure that i saved the profile when configuring the wireless setting on the card.

Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Solve : No System32 folder?

Answer»

I am trying to troubleshoot some issues I am having loading Directx9.0......
I don't seem to have the following folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Also I get a message "system not suitable for ru nning ms-dos and microsoft window aps."

Any ideas how to remidy either of those problems?
Much thanks to anyone who can help!!

DNYou may have many problems involved.

What spyware/adware/virus solutions are in place and being used?

Do you have your Explorer set to show all files (including system files)?

When did the problems start?

Have you added any new software lately? Done any vigorous FILE removing?

Are you the only ONE with access to this MACHINE?

Do you have a shiny real Windows CD to reinstall if needed?-I'm running Ad-Aware SE personal/Spybot Search and Destroy

-My explorer is set to show all files....

-This probelm started about 6months ago (just got enough time to look into)

-I have added SEVERAL new software aps. within the last six months...mapping software a few games etc...

-I have deleted nearly one quarter of the data on my PC within the last six months

-I am the only one accessing my PC

-If you are refering to the Microsoft Windows XP reinstallation CD....I got that

I've been reading some threads on how to do an XP repair/install but Im not sure if I should go there or not...

Any feedback greatly appreciated...
DNHere's some info if you decide to go that route:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspxI don't think you need to re-install. It sounds like it is probably an issue with your CONFIG.NT and/or AUTOEXEC.NT files. Open a command prompt and TRY the follwoing commands:
Code: [Select]echo %systemroot%
dir %systemroot%\system32\*.nt /aAnd post the results. The 2nd command should list 2 files. I suspect that they are missing, so it should be a pretty simple solution of replacing them. If it does not, then that is probably your problem. If it does list 2 files, then we will probably need to examine the contents of those 2 files to determine the issue.

Solve : Network File Sharing Woes?

Answer»

}{i,

I have a 7 computer network, comprised of windows 98se, XP, and Linux Ubuntu machines. One of the machines (a win 98se one, we will call it bob for simplicity) cannot see the shared documents on any of the other machines in the network, and no other machine, (not even bob) can see bob's shared documents. In fact bob doesn't even show up as a computer in the workgroup (any workgroup for that matter) EXCEPT to Bob itself. Bob can see itself as a computer on the network, but when bob goes to look at itself, it doesn't see any shared documents EVEN THOUGH there ARE documents set to be shared on Bob.

Whenever I try to access another computer on the network from "Bob" I GET the error:

\\(whoever) is not accessable.

The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again.

Now I'm not stupid, lol, I know that all the machines need to be in the same workgroup, and they are. I know all the machines need to have to have sharing enabled, and they do. I know that "bob's" network card and cable are good because Bob can get on the internet through the same card/cable (I'm on DSL). I know the hub that "Bob" is plugged into is good because there are other machines on the hub and they do not have this problem. I know the socket on the hub is good because I switched Bob from that socket to another, re-started Bob and another machine that I used to try and "see" bob with and there was no change.

I have tried disabling and re-enabling sharing on Bob to no avail, I have un-installed and re-installed the drivers with no change.

Any ideas? Is any of your machines set up as a WINS server (preferably one of the Linux boxes)? In Bob's networks settings, point the WINS setting to that server.Nope, none of them are set up as WINS servers. I don't even know how to set up a WINS server (lol, and I said I wasn't stupid ). The Linux boxes are bual-booters, so they are not on frequently enough to be used as a WINS server. The only machine that is on often enough to be workable is a Windows XP professional PC. How would I set this up as a WINS server?

I also use DHCP (assigned by my router) will this conflict?Hmm. Does Bob have any kind of software firewall running?Yes, it does have a software firewall (norton personal firewall 2005). However it is not the problem. I have the same firewall on two other machies which do not have this problem. However, to alieviate any question about the firewall ('cause it is a valid question after all) I dis-abled it and re-started Bob (verifying that the firewall was still off after the re-start, it was but I still had to dis-able internet security after the re-start) and another machine (well, actually, I started up another machine for the first time today to be exact). No change. Bob cannot see the other computers and no other computers can see Bob.

Poor Bob. lolWIth Bob's firewall turned off, go to one of the other PCs and use the "find computer" feature, typing in Bob's name. It is possible for a computer to be found even though its shares do not appear in the Network Neighborhood browse list.

With so many computers about, why not consider setting up a permanent Linux box running Samba as a WINS server? That can really help with collection of browse lists. One central WINS list which all of your other computers point to, to find WINS information.Well, the "find computer" works one way. I can see Bob's shared doc's from my machine. But trying the same thing the other way around does not work. Bob does a search for my machine and cannot find it. The spelling was verified to be CORRECT and I tried to get Bob to see another machine in the network but Bob couldn't see it either.

As for setting up a linux box as a server, that would be nice. But it costs money. I have a spare 300 mghz computer that I could set up Knoppix on I suppose (I'm currently out of HDDs). But having that on 24/7 would cost money for the juice it used. I will think about it.

I hope we can cure the DISEASE though, and not just the symptoms.Your server would probably draw no more than 100 watts most of the time. That's 2.4 kilowatt hours a day at roughly 10 cents per kilowatt hour. i.e. 24 cents a day. Not a budget breaker alone, I wouldn't have thought.

The shares Bob can't see - have you tried switching off the firewalls on those PCs and then doing the "find computer"?

FYI the protocol we're dealing with is called NETBIOS and it runs on ports 137 to 139. You'll need those open on all machines on your LAN for browsing to work properly - but don't expose those ports beyond your router.Wow, that little huh? I hadn't run the numbers but thats not at all bad.

I can't believe I forgot to disable the firewall on the my machine when trying to get to it from Bob. However, even with the firewall on my machine disabled AND the firewall on Bob disabled, Bob still cannot see this computer. There is a slightly inelegant solution. You could use an LMHOSTS file. Works like a hosts file: IP address and WINS name. Not possible if any of the machines are using DHCP of course.

Alternatively you could try and thrash out the problem a bit further. I think it's probably to do with browser election - that is, the fight that goes on between Win boxes to decide who will be "in charge" of the browse lists. If you have one computer that is ALWAYS on, then you can force this issue. On the computer that's "it", set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\MaintainServerList to YES. Set it to NO on all the others.Well for the first solution, I am using DHCP, and would like to keep that feature. So I suppose that one is out.

As for the registry key solution, I have a machine that is on befre all the others 90% of the time. What are the possible problems I would encounter if I were to set that machine to be "it"? What would happen if that machine were NOT on before all the others? The order of booting isn't the issue - if you take that option, you won't be able to guarantee seeing any shares without the master browser online.

One last thing to try before you take the plunge with registry tweaking. On all PCs make sure that NETBIOS is enabled over TCP/IP. You'll find that setting on the advanced settings-->WINS for your network connection-->TCP/IP.
