Solve : ISO file?

Answer»
HI EVERYBODY!!! I have download a game and the file was in ISO format. I've no idea what it is and what software we must use to open it up...... I guest ISO is not a type of compression or ZIPPED file. Is there ANYBODY can help me?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_imageLook what I found on google in < 5 secconds:

Or download Deamon Tool this is what i use to play when i download games files such as > cue - iso - btw - ccd - mds

I agree Daemon tools is the way to go.  It's a faster install speed as it's not reading from an actual CD.  It's also cheaper than wasting CD's on games.Just download and open deamon tools and it will appear in the Icon tray
> use 1 drive
> mount image and browse the game
> than it should act as a disc so you game will probably automatically popup or you have to go to my computer and click on the disc

There you go nice and EASY but sh** tutorialHey Mr president all to all member
Download all the game you want from Emule
Not easy for some rare fileshttp://ts.searching.com/search/daemon%20tools?h=

To download Daemon Tools.  You will need a bit torrent client installed though to use this website.

Ok once you have Daemon Tools install it.  Run the program.  As Elixir said it will open to the system tray, right click on it and go to the top of the list.  It should read, Virtual CD/DVD-ROM.  In the list that opens from that selection you can set the number of virtual drives you want.  I find it easier if you have one drive per ISO image of the game.  That way when it ASKS for disk 2 and so on you just change the drive letter where it's looking.

Ok to install the .ISO image.

- Left click on Daemon Tools in the system tray.
- Click on the drive you would like to mount the image to
- Browse to where you saved the .ISO and open it.

It should automatically start, however if it doesn't then open My Computer.  Right click on the drive and select open.  Browse through there until you find the .exe to install the game.  Begin installation.

If you have anymore issues with installing or playing the game, feel free to ask.  I'm sure Exilir could answer anything you have about it as well.nice explaining ha better than mine

Solve : Windows XP questions?

Answer»

Hi I have WINDOWS XP and I just wanted to set all of my windows settings BACK to the default settings and start over.  I would like to know how I can do this and if I do this, will it impact any important programs or softwares that I have installed?

Please advise how to do this.

Thanks.Whatever changes you made will have to be REDONE, I'm afraid, ONE at a time, and it DEPENDS on what you altered. A reinstall would be the other possibility.

Solve : take too much time to load windows?

Answer»

when I started up my pc, it goes like usual until it load windows to display desktop screen. It TAKE too much time (3-5 minutes).. I also have my friend who his pc take about 15 minute to load into windows desktop... What problems cause such symptom... SOMEONE know how to fix it... thanxMalware (spyware/adware/virii)

Not enough free disk space

Background processes running at startup which are not needed

Not enough RAM if using XP

Defective hardware

That's for STARTERS.  I'd SAY it's probably one of the first three.....Also ridding the registry of obsolete items and using a registry OPTIMISER can help.

Solve : Image icons??

Answer»

Greetings all

Lately when I save images to the hardrive it comes up with a different icon.  Normally it is a small thumbnail of the picture SAVED but it SOMETIMES saves it as one I haven't seen before(see attached image).

When it saves as this icon the only way to open them seems to be 1) click on open 2)select the option "select the program from a list" 3) then open it in paintbrush.  When it saves as a thumbnail all I have to do is click PREVIEW to view the image.  When scrolling through the images any with the new icon will not show up.

When I click on PROPERTIES to see what sort of file it is it just says "file".

Any idea on what is causing this as it is becoming quite frustrating.  At the moment nearly 50% of images saved turn into this icon.

I'm currently using windows xp.  That's about all I can tell you as I'm very green when it comes to computers.

Many thanks for any assistance. It would help to switch on the viewing of file extensions - that's the bit like ".jpg" or ".bmp" that TELLS Windows what kind of file it is.  In Windows explorer, go to Tools-->Folder Options-->View.  Uncheck "Hide extensions for knwon file types."

If you're seeing a file with no thumbnail, that also has no extension, but which opens in MS Paint, then it is probably a ".bmp" file.  Rename (e.g.) "train_srath_33" to "train_srath_33.bmp" and you might find this fixes the problem. You must be doing something while saving the images.

I think Rob's approach will solve your cause. It worked perfectly!  Thankyou so much for the assistance! Pleasure.

Solve : Media Player not opening files & crashing instead?

Answer»

Hi,
My problem is that whenever I want to open a video file that is over say, 100mb, the computer will lock up and not respond, making me have to restart the computer. This problem also happens in explorer, if im in the same directory as a large video file, not even selecting it for anything, the computer will lock up. Real player also does this.
The only way I can move these files is through the command prompt, and I can only view them with a DOS based movie player, which results in poor sound quality.

The thing is, when I try to access or move or modify a large video file in any way through windows, it will slow down to a halt, completely, and crash everything, but in DOS accessing, moving, or playing (in quickview for DOS) takes seconds, if that.

also EVERY now and then I get the error message along the lines of media cannot play the file as there is not enough memory or somehting like that

Please help!

My specs are

Pentium 4
1gb ram
Windows XP home
Windows Media Player 10

PS scanned for viruses with norton and nothing showed up, and I defragmented the harddriveTest you RAM.
http://www.memtest.org/
Download the file, double click it to create the floopy then boot to the floppy & let it run for a few hours.I used this yesterday and after 2 hours it wasnt done and I had to go to bed. I used it today and after 4 hours it still hadnt completed and I needed to use the computer so I rebooted. it passed 10 tests and was ONTO the 11th.

When I access these large files the harddrive activity light is on constantly and I can hear it whirring and clicking, could this be something to do with using the harddrive as temporary RAM because there isnt enough about? #
8-Bit_Acorn....Is this something that has just started ?
What is the file format of the movie you cannot open .....?
Does WMP 10 work ok if you play a music cd ?
Do you have any other noticeable issues on your machine ?

dl65  I cannot open large .avi files.
I have not had the computer long (about a month) so this is the first time I noticed this.
in limewire I browsed through the 'library' limewire folder and remembered it was 'My Videos' i played the file through limewire which opened a new media player and the file played straight off!
Why i can't do this in media player on its own i dont know.
Maybe it is more to do with windows explorer? when i click to open the file a small explorer boxs comes up, its when I click on the file that it freezes, and the computer notably slows down when I am even in the same directory as a large avi file
CD's play fine

I recently (about a week ago) did a system restore

Why was the system restore required ?

dl65  I accidently deleted NTDETECT whilst trying to clear out some old dos software that had stubbornly installed itself on the root directory, and I didn't have a floppy drive or a boot CD so I did a system restore, and I felt like a clean slate anyway. Not a GREAT reason, but my PC was full of crud and needed a good clean out.

by the way, my PC was factory installed with XP with the key on a sticker on the side, so what am I supposed to do for an XP boot CD?wooden spoon...... Do you not have a copy of the original Windows cd ?
You dont require a boot disk .......... Just go into the bios and set your cd rom as first  boot........ Put your original win XP cd in the drive and reboot ...it will load just fine.
Make sure that you save any files you want onto cds before you do this as ....everthing will be wiped clean ........

dl65  I dont have a win XP CD, i didnt get one with my computer as it was bought from Dixons with XP pre-installed, as I thought was the case with all store-bought PCs with XP pre installed...still no updates on media player, its still refusing to play these files. I am especially annoyed because my computer has ample memory which isnt really cheap anyway.

How about getting that error message to display again so that you can get the exact wording of it and then post it in the forum?  That might be helpful.

How much free space do you have on your Windows drive partition?  Have you run Disk Cleanup lately?  If not, I think I would do that and see whether it helps any with this problem.
wooden spoon....what about ......recreating the issue so the error message comes up and then take a screen shot of it and post it here .

this is WMP trying to access an avi file.
This does not happen with all avi's.
this is not what happens when i open a large avi. The PC just freezes up.

Solve : smiley in corner of screen while booting?

Answer»

I just recently NOTICED something interesting that happens upon booting my laptop. I have been searching for someone who has heard of it before, but to no avail. Check this out:

I have an HP Pavilion z5200
AMD Athlon XP 3400+
1 gb RAM
I have 2 Operating Systems:
    XP Pro (came with comp)
Suse Linux 9.0 (installed about 8 months ago)
I took out the Windows XP bootskin by editing the boot.ini file as follows:
       CODE: [SELECT]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noguiboot /NoExecute=OptOutby adding the "/noguiboot"

So on to the interesting item I discovered. When I boot into Windows inbetween where the Windows XP bootscreen should be and where the HP screen appear I have just a BLACK screen. About 100 miliseconds before the HP screen appears I get this little IMAGE of a blue smiley face. square, not circular. It has a 'v' for a mouth as well. I highly doubt this is Microshizzles way of teasing you for not displaying there logo upon booting.
Any ideas?Certain text-mode console fonts include amongst their character sets a smiley-face like character.  I'd hazard a guess that's what's being displayed.  As to why?  I have absolutely no idea.  Given that it only displays for a tenth of a second under fairly rare conditions, you may well have been one of the first people to spot this.  Congratulations.  maybe I'm just a tech geek, perhaps it's embedded in my personality to always find an anwser to things or how they work, but I'm going to Best Buy today to boot some HP laptops.

weird....Let us know. I am curious.

He seems rather impatient too.  I think he's referring to screen lag while gaming, but with that language barrier we'll never know.

nouns & verbs + sentence structure + punctuation = helpfulIf the little freezes only occur during gaming then you need a better vid card/more RAM.  Check the specs of the game vs the specs of your computer.actually the freezing occured no matter where i was... anything i did, even make those little boxes with your mouse on your desktop (where you click, hold, and move the mouse to make a square box in order to highlite more) it just kept doing it...but i think its actually stopped now

Solve : Password Problem !!!?

Answer»

Well I changed the password on my sons computer to limit his online time, and now I can't remember what it is :-?

Windows XP Professional
There is no SELECTION for administrator, just a place to type in USER name and password
I want to save the data on the hard drive, PLEASE help!!!Security is a double edged sword. Can you log on from the administrator account or was that it?PROBABLY it was...
Try Safe Mode to log in. F8 at boot. Do you have XP Disk?http://www.grape-info.com/doc/win2000srv/security/ntpasswd.html

Go here.  It's a utility that will recover and allow you to change the admin password.  There are step by step instructions that will tell you how to make the boot disk.  Then you just pop it into the computer, boot to it and follow the instructions on the webpage.

It will allow you to reset the password or get RID of it completly.

Solve : deleted shared files during software removal?

Answer»

in USING the add/remove software feature on windows 98 I was prompted with several warnings about shared files that appeared to be no longer used by any application and asking if I wanted to delete them

of course I did and now I can't use ie, and i get several errors on START up.

any suggestions.Go to a computer store see if you can get an IE DISK or you may find some in an PC mag or on the disk that come with your computer, that has an IE on it( just try to install IE again )
Anyway if you cant use IE which application or computer are you using to contact us?Download Mozilla Firefox.  I'm ASSUMING you have access to another computer with Internet access.  Then install Mozilla Firefox on your computer.  It's better than IE anyway.Thank you.

I already tried firefox bc I use it at work and because it is better than ie.

It didn't work but maybe I'll try it again.

also yes of course, i have internet access VIA other computer(s)

Thanks very much.Use your (dics that come with your computer) to install Internet Explore
It should work for definateMy sugestion is: don't delete what you don't know! Other sugestion, try again firefox or opera. Doesn't work? What is the error message? Do you have to use a proxy? Some other non-ussual settings that you forgot to specify?

Solve : Enabling CD Rom within Win 3.11??

Answer»

Hello all,

As my very first post can I stretch your combined brainpower and experience to allow me to enable a CD Rom in Win 3.11?

Digging into my MEMORIES of DOS and such early versions of Windows I have:

1. Downloaded Generic Mscdex and Oakcdrom.sys

2. The Mscdex consisted of versions 221, 222, 223

3. Which is correct for the above version of 3.11?

I have included the correct syntax for Mscdex and drivename etc in both Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.

But when I boot up, the FINAL sequence of searching within Mscdex is displayed as Incorrect version.

Does this mean the Dos or Mscdex?

The machine running Win 3.11 is a platform PC (AMD DX2/50MHZ, 256mb) for my friend's garage emission gases analyser and the updates for it's software are now supplied on CDs. I know we could break these down on another PC and PRODUCE floppies but it seems old HAT to do this now.

Very grateful for any help...

P.S. If successful will the CD Rom show up in program manager? Congratulations for what looks like an excellent site/forum.Hi All,

SORTED! It was version 222 of Mscdex (downloaded from your website), Thanks for that.

Solve : how to build an intranet ??

Answer»

Dear friends,
I have 2 computers in the same place(both have WinXP SP2) but the Db (Access 2003) I have to work on  is only in one of them. I KNOW that I must have an "intranet" to make the two computers able to comunicate but the question is: how can I do it?
Thanks a lot for any suggestion.
BenedettoThere are serval ways to do an intranet.

You can SIMPLE do a direct cable connection. Or you can use a ETHEN net cable to conncet the two PCs.

A BETTER way is to get a ROUTER, set up an IP address for each PC.Thank a lot, king Richard, I will try it.
Bye
BenedettoAn intranet is just a private network, generally one with a webserver.  Configure one machine as the server and connect to it via an http to the IP address from the browser of your client machine.  You can also add clients as you acquire new machines.

The best way (IMHO) is to set up a NATted LAN with a router.  You can also configure the router to forward external HTTP requests to your webserver so you can access it while away from home.http://www.intranetjournal.com/faqs/whatis/index.html

Otherwise right-click a drive icon and open Properties>Tools>Error Checking> Check now... , put a check-mark in both boxes and click on OK.

You'll see a notice saying that CheckDisk will run when you re-boot the system.

I don't understand your question so much. But I am trying to explain the problem once again.
my computer turn on after I shut down completly.
If  you by mistake press on my spacebar on my keyboard then it turn on.
It is a Desktop PC.
As an earlier post mentioned, have you checked your BIOS options to see whether the BIOS has a setting that controls this behavior? What is BIOS option? How can I find that? When your computer starts to boot press the "del" button.

Just see what pops up.BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System Quote

What is BIOS option? How can I find that?
Many computer owners have PROBABLY never seen this part of their computer system.  It's something you NORMALLY do not need to see.  Access to it must be achieved during startup, before Windows loads.  As a previous post said, the Del key may be the key to access the BIOS for your system.  However, this varies from one make/model to another.  On some computers, the F1 or F2 key is the key to access the BIOS.  Here's an informative source on How to Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS

You may need to repeatedly tab the key during startup to catch the system at the right time.

Solve : Won't come out of standby?

Every time we put the computer in standby and try to reactivate, we get a blue screen.  When we CUT the MACHINE off and restart, we get a message that SAYS "Your computer has recovered from a very serious error."  We have a Dell, Pentum 4, 2.6 GHz, 512 ram; XP professional; Norton Systemsworks; printers, an HP Officejet 5510 and Samsung ML-2010.  We reinstalled XP with instructions from Dell and reinstalled all the software.  Same RESULT.  Thanks for any HELP.  SteveI would post it on the Dell forum. What model is this? It could be important.

Solve : DVD/CD Category Missing from Device Manager?

Answer»

Hey there.

I recently started having trouble with my internal CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive on my Sony VAIO laptop. I am running Windows XP Home, SP1. One day recently, and I wish I would have noticed it right away because I'm not sure when it occurred, my drive disappeared from the My Computer listing. When I went to the Device Manager to troubleshoot it, the DVD/CD Drive category is completely missing from the listing.

I have GOOGLED and googled and I can't find anyone else who has had this problem. Do any of you know what the heck happened? I'd just back up my files and reinstall XP, but I can't do it without a CD-ROM drive!Klish:

Does the drive tray open?  What happens when you put a CD in the drive?  Have you tried to have Windows SEARCH for new hardware using the Add/Remove hardware program in the Control Panel?

DocHi, thanks for responding. You ask some great questions. I should have supplied all that info in the first place.

The drive will open. When I put a CD in and close it, the light does blink and I can hear it spinning up. However, nothing happens. (No autorun, no change in My Computer).

I have tried multiple times to scan for new hardware.

I have also tried to hook up an external CD/DVD drive via USB, but it is trying to install as a USB Mass Storage Device and then it shows up in the device manager with a caution mark because it hasn't installed correctly. However, that is probably not related to the problem I'm having here because I tried to install that same drive on my other computer and it did the same thing and also does not work on that machine. (That drive is a Mad Dog Mega Stor 16x Triple Format DVD-RW drive.) I've scanned for new hardware probably a dozen times after uninstalling the USB Mass Storage Device entry that gets added when Windows XP tries to install the external drive, hoping that one of my two drives will show up.

I also deleted the registry keys for the UpperFilters and LowerFilters according to an article in MS's troubleshooting database:

1.      Click Start, and then click Run.
2.      In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.      Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
4.      On the File menu, click Export.
5.      In the File name box, type savedkey, and then click Save.
6.      Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

Note If this data type is missing, go to Method 2.
7.      Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8.      Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

But this didn't help either.

I also tried the XP DVD/CD fix utility that is found here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

And then restarted, again with no joy.

Thanks again for asking for clarification. I hope someone here knows what is wrong with this laptop I'm about to throw out the bloody window!

KathyKathy:

A few possibilities:

A. The DVD-ROM drive is damaged. Solution: To verify that it is not damaged, check the BIOS setup (you can ENTER the BIOS setup by pressing the key indicated in the display when you first start your computer).  If it does not show up in the BIOS setup, have a computer technician open the computer case and test the drive using a multimeter.

B. The DVD-ROM drive is disabled in the BIOS setup. Solution: Enter the BIOS setup and verify that it is listed as enabled.  If it is disabled, change the setting to enabled, and save the settings before exiting the BIOS setup.

C. You have installed a DOS program with a DOS CD-ROM driver. This will keep the drive from showing up in My Computer.  Solution: Uninstall the DOS program, and located and delete its CD-ROM drivers if they are not removed when the DOS program is uninstalled.

D. There is damage to some Windows operating system files. Solution: Reinstall Windows.

Let us know if you need help with any of these suggestions.

Best regards,
DocHi,
I have the same problem but on a desktop.  My C-mos does not see my CD-burner or my DVD reader.  Both devices are located on IDE channel 2.  I checked Device manager and it reports the IDE channel as working.

I went out and purchased an IDE add-in card for a PCI slot but haven't tried it yet.

I suspect the registry is damaged because I hung a bad drive on IDE channel 1 as a slave last week so I could pull my data off it before disposing of it. It was after I removed the bad drive that my problems began.

I'm going to try removing the data and power cables from the two drives and let Windows think there isn't anything on the channel. Then I will re-install them and see if Windows can find them. (If you try this you have to shut all the power off to the PC for each step. I don't know what effect the battery in a laptop will have in this situation.)

If this doesn't work, I'll try the add-in card.

If the add-in doesn't work, I'll wipe my drives and start over with a clean installation.

Please let me know if you find an answer. I REALLY understand you're frustration working without a CD.

The only saving grace in all this is I picked up a 1 gig USB "thumbdrive" just before this thing happened and I've been using it for transporting files to and from work .

Hi
It's the newbe again.
I was successful at restoring my CD drives.
I tried disconecting the drives entirely from my system by removing the data cable.
After removing the data cable I went into device manager and removed the secondary IDE controller.
I rebooted with this revised configuration.
After rebooting I shut down the machine and reinstalled the drive cable. Actually I replaced it with a new cable just to be sure.
When I re-booted, the drives were back.
I don't know that this method would apply to a laptop because they often have proprietary drives and methods of suppling the power and data links but something along these lines may work.
You certainly should be able to remove the IDE controller from device manager.
I don't know what the consequences would be if you removed your primary IDE controller, I doubt device manager would allow it.
If your comfortable with removing the CD device physically from the machine, I'd try that first. Then uninstall the device driver, re-boot, shut down, reinstall the device physically, re-boot and re-install the driver if it uses one.
Good luck.

:exclamationDdi you reinstall the drivers :-?Identify the video card or video adapter and then we can help you find the drivers to make it work correctly.

Download and run Everestt. It is free and here:

Thank you for your pm, please use the forum for queries.

As GX indicates it's necessary for you to identify the video card/adapter before we can tell you what driver(s) you need.  You may also need a driver for your printer if you have one.

Good luckk well my video card is a standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA)
so ya now what? You have to run Everest, as directed. Looking in Device Manager does not help. It only shows the items working that have drivers.

The one you describe is a plain vanillla Windows driver.

Solve : adding a printer?

Answer»

hello!

on a win2k3 box, im trying to add a printer network shared by a win2k box.

what i want to achieve is to manage, share (in behalf of the actual box the printer is physically connected to) and use the printer via internet printing.

i click on the add printer, on the wizard, i select "local printer attached to this computer" with "automaticall detect and INSTALL.." cleared. select LPT1 port. select the printer manufacturer (i.e. epson) and the DRIVER (lq-2180). assigned a printer share name. then select test page.

on the printer QUEUE, it lists a document ready for printing, but after a while an "error-printing" alert comes out.

but if i browse for a shared pritner, selected the printer i was trying to add earlier, i can print just fine.

am i doing the right steps?

TIPS anyone?

THANKS!

Solve : cannot share folders btw XP machines?

Answer»

This just recently developed - before this afternoon I shared files flawlessly.

Tonight I DOWNLOADED a song with one computer that had no speakers so I tried to transfer it by file sharing to another machine that has speakers.  In fact, I tried 3 different computers.  Each time I get a message called Error copying File or Folder and the message says:

Make SURE the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

As far as I can TELL, it is not in use, and the disks on all 3 machines are not full, or even CLOSE to being full.

Why can't I share files tonight when I've been sharing just fine before this afternoon?

Sandy
Check if the song files is being OPEN somewhere els - so close all application that is opening the song files
Unshare the folder and then reshare.
This way open files will be lost.

Check in your comp whether you have anything open for that.

Please explain in a complete and understandable sentance how the Folder options created a registry disaster ?

dl65  No, WHen i click on my "C:\" Drive it doesnt "Explore" it but rather The Search Window will come up. It happened by me changing the icon of the drive though "Tools --> Folder Options". This happened before and it was a mess-up in the registry but i forgot how i fixed it. Also when i right click on the drive Search is in bold and it should normally be "Explore" or "OPEN"Try Registry check and PC repair Check
Yeah you might be right you have delete the C registry some how

Did you try to change the folder to a DIFFERENT picture and some how and it stop letting you exporing the C drive?
Mayby you stop peventing this to happen follow and trace you step back and change the folderoption back to normallHave you tried booting to safe mode and choosing 'Last known good configuration'?Maybe i can just add a new Action to it to open it but i domnt know what to put in for " Application used to perform this action"Try using TweakUI's repair icons facility.

You could also try running sfc /scannow if you have an XP CD.

Have you done an on-line anti-virus scan?So just make the explore thing as bold which is the default one.

Hi, i am having difficulties uploading jpeg images up to my website. When i pick an image and then click to upload via the web site providers control panel after a couple of seconds an error box appears saying' ' the file you have uploaded is not a jpeg or giff ' '  The screen then FREEZES and i have to click the x in the error box to stop the upload even though it is not uploading.
1. The images are jpegs
2. I can upload them via another computer
3. I am using a new computer and never have uploaded from this computer
4. I can email images ok
5. I have resized the images SMALLER to no avail.

The other computer is  e machine, and wanadoo isp.( this pc uploads ok )

I have avg anti virus and use the windows firewall. Also use adaware and spybot. Not too sur about the technicals of the computer system apart from it being 2.9ghz with 2 hard drives totaling 180gig  my browser is IE.
If you need more info please ask
many thanks GrahamCan you upload one of the offending images here, we like pictures. This is one of the images. Sorry if it doesnt work.

If it doesnt work how/why can i post one.Right well done me, so that is one of the PICS. I did resize it and tried to send to my website but was still the same. As previosly mentioned i have two hard drives -  one is 20gig for the programmes and windows applications and the other is 160gig for data. I have stored the images on the data hard drive, is this ok ? When i had this computer from new i started to install wanadoo isp on it but did not do it all and stopped the process.Shortly afterwards i went with pipex and that is now on the computer and that is now my isp. When i open up outlook express it still says -o express provided by wanadoo- so something must still be on my system. Internet explorer said the same for quiet a while but a few WEEKS ago it reverted back to just the windows logo. Sorry if i am not CLEAR in my descriptions.
Cheers GrahamWhat are you actually trying to fix?

What happen?

OK i do understand you but it took abit
When you installed wanadoo, have actually uninstalled it ( all of the extra compoenent )
Try uninstalling outlook and reinstalled it again

What about your first problem has that been fix yet
Hi, sorry if i was confusing things. I still have my original problem ie: cannot upload images onto my web site. All of the extra stuff i mentioned in previous post was some additional info that i thought might have some influence with this problem. The wanadoo was installed as far as the modem driver then i could not get any farther cus i did have the proper wanadoo disc and the disc i was using didnt have the drivers on it. So i unistalled from add/remove.

Cheers GrahamStill need to know what browser you're using to do the upload.

Have you tried briefly turning off the firewall when you upload?Internet Explorer is the browser and i have tried turning off the firewall. But it still wont work. It is done through the Freestart control panel that is part of the web package.Install Firefox, and try using that for the upload.  Let us know if it works?  (You should really be ditching I.E. anyway.  If you need IE functionality, use SlimBrowser or Maxthon instead.)Change the file extension to lower case letters   .jpgBrilliant, thanks Rob- i installed Firefox and now it works fine. But i dont know why!
Is it a better browser than explorer? Thanks for all the help. Will keep looking on this site because it is full of help and knowledge.
Many thanks Graham

Solve : My Alt key doesn't work.?

Answer»

My Alt button doesn't SEEM to be working anytime I try to use ctrl+alt+del . I can't tab through my open programs by using alt+tab anymore either. It's been happening for about 2 months now, and I can't figure out for the life of my why it's not working. I'm running 98 SE. I just did a sweep w/ Spybot S&D, and cleaned up all the spyware. However, after resetting I'm still not able to use it. I can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't be working. I've plugged my keyboard into another COMPUTER to check, and the alt buttons work fine. Can anybody suggest anything for me?  :-? Thanks!in Control Panel there are keyboard setting left click it
it will come up with keyboard properties go to HARDWARE and select your keyboard model and click properties again and go to driver you cant update it till you have dowdload a new update from the specific web site

Ok you have your key board name right on your screen (keyboard propertise) get the name and find out if you can update your keyboard

when you download it go back to keyboard properties and update driver and (install Advance) form where you have specificly download your file to click on it and just find you way around there  (is easy)
Is there any chance you can try this keyboard on a different PC?  Or a different keyboard on this PC?  Could simply be a broken Alt key...  e.g. crud stuck in the membrane or worn contacts.  Basic keyboards are pretty cheap these days. Quote

That entire part isn't on my computer at all. When I go to keyboard and "properties" the only option is changing the layout of the keyboard from ENGLISH US to other stuff. There is no option to change the keyboard model and type.

I just plugged it into another computer a couple days ago, and it works fine. Also, I know keyboards are cheap, but I can't afford one atm.Sorry - I should have read your opening post more carefully.

It's clearly not a keyboard problem.  Something has remapped or disabled the code that your keyboard sends for the Alt key.  It's not a problem I've heard with on Windows, but there are a couple of things I can think of trying.  First is T-Chai's idea.  You need to go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->SYSTEM-->Device manager.  Find the keyboard in the device listings, and click "properties".  You should see an option to reinstall the driver.  Try it.  (You'll need to insert your Win98SE CD.)

The other option is Start-->Programs-->System tools-->System information.  Tools-->System file checker.  See if that recommends restoring any changed system files.

If those two don't work, and no one else has ideas, you may be looking at a Win98SE reinstall. Quote

Solve : computer is turning itself on and off?

Answer»

alright. so heres the story. my other computer has been acting funny for a while it started turning itself on and off around christmas time, and it was brought into the shop. the guy told us it was a power SUPPLY and VIRUS problem. so he replaced the power supply and said he deleted the virus. about a week later, it started doing it again. it was taken back and the virus was deleted again. he said it was very deeply rooted.

about an hour ago, a week after we got it back it started doing it again. one of my friends said it might be a BIOS problem, but i dont really know a whole lot about computers. any help?

FYI, there were torrents downloaded on that pc, but nothing had been downloaded a couple months prior to the problem occuring.

thanks.More details of your system would be handy.  Which OS, do you have anti-virus & firewall installed, what's your hardware setup :-?

Can you check your component temperatures :-?Check the BIOS and see if your computer is set to turn on at a specific time. It's possible that somehow, a time was set for the computer to turn on in the morning... Also, I suggest GETTING yourself some virus protection.

Flameits a compaq, 512mb ram, geforce 4, 120gb hd.

it has norton and zone alarm installed.Which OS - I'm presuming XP.

Which means, "Oops, I cocked up.  I don't really know what's wrong with this PC, but *censored* I'm going to charge you for my time anyway."  Did he actually TEST the power supply before replacing it?

Anyway, you say that the PC is turning itself ON as well as off.  That's not virus activity.  A virus can only perform its devious duty when the PC is running.  When you're turning the PC off, is it fully off, or just suspended?  If it's switching itself on, when fully off, then yes your friend is right - this is a BIOS issue (at least partly).

The same goes for some other components.

Flamethanks the laptop has an os on it but no disc glad i check before messing with itGood thinking. To be sure if it will work or not, you might consider contacting HP Compaq. In this ARTICLE one of the options for recovery is to copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to the root directory.  These two files do not ALREADY exist in the root directory (at least I can't find them there) so is there a benefit to having them in the root before the Ntldr missing problem occurs??If you unhide hidden files and folders and system files, you'll see these files on the Root directory.

Full format a floppy with XP without checking to make an MS-DOS start up disk and then copy the ntldr, ntdetect.com and YOUR BOOT.ini file to the floppy. Write PROTECT the floppy and keep in a safe place. You should also look at making a Password recovery floppy.

If the ntldr can not be found error occurs then you can use the floppy to boot to the hard-drive.

This error can occur if too many files are placed on the root directory without them being in the appropriate folder.Merci PavaneA votre service.

Solve : Windows won't shut down?

Answer»

When I go to turn off my machine, it locks up in the mode "Windows is now shutting down"
It's a brand new emachine model T6216.  I just hooked it up and I have this problem?I'm guessing you are using Windows XP? When did this start? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you been keeping-up with Windows Updates? So you have Service Pack 2 installed?

FlameYes I have Windows XP-Home.  My problem existed immediately after my very first startup.  It is a Brand New Computer.  I did install a wireless internet card (Lynksys).  I'm not sure if I have Service Pack 2 installed?RIGHT click on My Computer --Properties --General and see if there's Service Pack 2 words after WIN XP...Hi This might help... I had the same problem the only way to solve it is recover it... Every new machine comes with recovery CD's or DVD's... thats what i did and it solved it.... I mean there might be another solution but thats what i did to mine and it WORKS for about 4 years now and no prob.My old computer and a friend's computer did the same thing once it was fresh. Run Windows Updates on http://www.microsoft.com ... Run a custom update, and install what you need.

FlameSo if my XP version does SAY Service Pak 2.. what does that mean? What do I do?Try first. Make system restore point then you look at freeware link below and use emptemp and ccleaner and also put USER profile hive cleanup service on your system.

Right-click on your boot drive ICON, drive C, and open properties then tools, now on error checking and check now and put x in both boxes then click on ok and let windows run chkdsk when it reboots.

You can do this in run window too just type chkdsk /r and then answer Y and press enter.

Have you got all updates after sp2? There are many now.

Solve : Big error when installing (oleaut32.dll)?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

I have some serious problems;
Everytime i try to install something, it crashes with the well known error window. (SEND report/don't send report)
It SAYS that an error has caused in 'oleaut32.dll'

I have tryed the following:

- updates, updates, updates.
- Direct X 9.0c.
- Service Pack 2 installed.
- in SAVE mode, tryed to delete it, and replaced with new one, didn't work.

So who can HELP me???

thank you,
JasperAdd a new file:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?oleaut32Yeah i did,

1.  It's an older file (from dll-files)
2.  It says I can't replace it. (I think because windows is still running)
3.  In save-Mode I can replace it, but still gives me the same error

I only have got it with some installers, (from macrovision)
Like, I CAN install Need for Speed Most Wanted, but NOT GTA San Andreas.

Any more tips?
Cheers,
JasperDo you have a legal Windows CD if you need to reinstall? How do you suppose you got in this shape? When did this start? Can you overwrite the file from the recovery console?I do have a legal CD
It started, I think when auto-updating installed Service Pack2
Before that, The PC was gone through a complete format.
I have run all scans you can possibibly imagine, with no ERRORS, virusses, or whatever.

Can you overwrite the file from the recovery console?
Uhm, I don't know exactly what you mean, I am Dutch and my English isn't that good Can you be a bit more specific?

Thanks,
Jasper

Solve : Dual Monitors "ghost cursor"?

Answer»

When I plug in a 2nd monitor to my laptop, I get a second (useless) cursor on the 2nd monitor.  For instance, if the monitors are set up [1][2] and I have the cursor on monitor 1, a ghost or mirror cursor will appear on monitor 2.  Only the left cursor will be able to function.  When I move the main cursor over to monitor 2, the ghost cursor dissapears off the screen to the right.  The WHOLE situation is more of an annoyance than anything as I sometimes lose which is the 'real' cursor.  Any way to eliminate this funky double cursor thingy?

Thanks for any help you can offer.Do we get any SPECIFIC clues about the monitor or the laptop, or are we just expected to GUESS?   :-?Being new to this forum, (1 POST---I'm sure you noticed) I didn't realize that the solution to the problem I was facing was dependent on the kind of monitor and/or laptop.  I thought, to make an analogy, that it was like asking how to jump-start a car battery, and it wouldn't matter if it was an '89 Ford or a '06 Mercedes.

I think it would have been easy for you to deduce from the phrasing of my question that I am a rookie in these matters and it would have been just as easy for you, since you did reply, to inform me that these peices of information were needed in a polite manner, instead of the snide, 'do I have to guess' that I received.

I realize that this is a volunteer service, and I appreciate this forum being here.  The reason for its existence is because so many of us aren't very knowledgeable about these particular matters.

Also, my goal isn't to make this personal.  I thank you for reading the question and being interested enough to want to try and help, I just was a bit offended to be perceived as a 'dope' because I didn't provide the information that you needed in the original post, although my wife thinks you may be on to something.

I think the problem has been solved from a reply I received in another forum.

Thank you for your time.

J.T.Sorry you got your panties in a wad over this perceived offense, but nonetheless, we are interested in a solution if someone else comes along with a similar issue.

We do get a LOT of people who post no info, which we then have to drag out of them to get a solution to THEIR problem. Strange isn't it? That may be why you got no other responses to your original question "rude" or otherwise - nothing to work with.

Solve : Boot disk with access to C:\?

Answer»

OS: WINDOWS XP professional

Is it possible to create a boot disk that will allow me to access the files on C:\ prompt without loading windows?

Cheers
XerxesYou can create the 6 boot DISKS from the XP CD and try that. Keep in mind that XP must be RUNNING to GET to command prompt, which is not DOS. Also, it does not run on top of DOS, as Win98 did.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Solve : A Little Feedback PLEASE!!!?

Answer»

I downloaded some VIDEO files onto blank discs, and although my Microsoft XP laptop sometimes plays them, it sometimes mistakenly reads the discs as blank.  How do I fix this?  Also, when I download video files on my PC, they work fine.  But when I try to play the discs on my laptop, I often have a lot of trouble, such as:  1. After a MOVIE plays for awhile, my computer will suddenly shut down.  2. When I try to play certain discs, the computer tells me that the ClassFactory can't perform the requested action (or something to that effect).  3. The disc's video file will play, but fast-forwarding and rewinding are a nightmare.

How do I fix all of this?  Do I need special codecs or something?  Do the files play OK on my PC because that's where they were downloaded (as opposed to the problematic play of my laptop)?

Would someone PLEASE help me?

HaroldtheGreat

Re: data discs

Reply #1 - What kind of video files? What format? What software are you using? What operating system? What hardware? Did it ever work right? Any details at all?

Guru

Re: data discs

Reply #2 - Dear Guru:  Mostly AVI and DIVX.  I've tried several players, and Windows Media Player Classic seems to work best.  On my PC (which never has trouble), it's the regular Windows Media Player.  I burned the discs with RECORD Now!, and yes, my laptop has played some of them in the past.
I think I might have a solution to that problem.... I had the same problem too and this is what i did... When i downloaded a movie file from the internet... and i burned it on the disc... it works on my computer where the movie was origionaly downloaded.. but when i take the cd to another computer... It says cant play.... (the video is 600 mb.. size)  Here is the soultion that i did... I checked before i was burning... I had the option set to .. "ALLOW MORE FILES TO BE WRITTEN" When i took i took the check mark of that option it burned it and it works on the other pcs too... the other solution is might be the codecs... Here is a website you can download the codec from...
http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1226&s=95  (Its a codec Full Pack.. and its 2.69 .mb.  That might solve it...
Thanks a lot, dude.  Much appreciated.

Solve : Control Panel and other issues?

Answer»

Something has kidnapped my Control Panel entry from the Start Panel and I cannot get it back.  I have a high end dual processor XPSP2 system.  I am the administrator, but higher powers( read, I think, Norton/Symantic ) are BLOCKING me from some normal administrator functions.  Also, I cannot go 24 hours without a crash!!!  Any thoughts or suggestions will be much appreciated.  I do not have virus problems or anyother gremblems that any virus scans, from Norton and others can detect and I am careful about letting things in so I don't think the problem lies in that direction.  Am also using the Microsoft Beta 'System One Care' which I think has the potential for being a great program.

Thanks you in advance for any assistance.

Dave Bjorkgrenmtnbrk......  Did this disappearance coincide with the installation of the Beta .....
One Care Live ?
It is quite possible that there is some interaction between that app and Symantec ......... I would be inclined to attempt to remove the Beta app or contact MicroSoft ....they may have a solution .

Are you able to get to your system restore feature and restore back to just before this occurred ?

dl65  Thank you for responding.  It's a good THOUGHT and I already contacted Microsoft 2 days ago, but have not received a response from them, like I expected to.  Unfortunately, because I cannot get to my control panel I cannot remove any programs, at least the Windows way.

I work alone now( and have for many years ) so don't have many people to bounce questions off of.  That's one of the problems of indepence, no one to talk to that know much about computers.  I am very hopeful about this site and hope that I can contribute to it.

Davemtnbrk......I guess you have tried using the search feature to see if it shows up anywhere .

dl65  Forgot one thing about your response.  As part of the overall administrative functions I cannot do is system restore.  That is one of the first things I tried.  I set system restore points to be performed every day and have gone back 2 months without luck.  Whatever it is it will not perform the restore.

Did I mention that I'm not a big fan of Windows and its complexities.  Some how or other I think things should be simpler.  I wish they would stop being all things to all people.

Just saw your post about searching.  Do you know that there are 143 *.cpl files on my system?  Try it on yours and see how many there are.  How do you know which one is the one that you should run.  Tried a few that seemed obvious, like from Microsoft, but no luck.

Davemtnbrk.... Just had another thought ...have you tried rebooting into safe mode and see if control panel is still there ?

dl65  Very good thought and one that did not occur to me.  Unfortunately it did not work.  I do not have a control panel there either .

I'll give you an example of the kind of problem I'm having.  I clicked on 'Set Program Access and Defaults.  What I get is a message 'This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.  Please contact your system administrator'.  *censored*, I am the system administrator!! now DWIM( Do What I Mean ).

I've even gotten to the point where I tried to reload Window's XP and all that entails.  I can't even do that.  Fortunately I can continue on with my implementation, but I know that I am just sitting on a powder keg and that it's going to blow anytime now.......  Well, lots of backups.  Fortunately I have 2 160GB disks on my system so backups aren't that TEDIOUS.  It's just that things should not be that way.mtnbrk....  You say that you CANNOT format and reinstall XP ..... Now thats REALLY odd ........ How were you attempting to do the install ? I'm sure that some of my questions may seem odd , but the answer may lead to a solution .
By any chance , do you have a floppy drive ?

dl65
Yes, but I tried to re-install from the original CD.  Does that make a difference?

I did make a full set of recovery 6 3 1/2" floppy disks when I first got this system.  Are you suggesting that I try them?mtnbrk.......  Ok .....If you have a original win XP disk thats good ......... Please explain how you attempted to reinstall it ?

dl65  I mounted it in the drive and waited.  The automatic boot did not happen so I went directly to the disk and clicked on setup.exe.  My CD-R drive does have automatic load.

I did get the Window where you can make choices and I clicked on Install( I think that's what the menu says ) and it kicked me out.

mtnbrk.......
Quote

My CD-R drive does have automatic load.
Please explain what you mean by this .... If the disk is bootable it will load .......
Lets have another go at this ........
first go into the bios and set your boot sequence to CD-rom first boot ....
then save the setting and exit .
Next put the bootable win XP cd in your cd-rom .
Now shutdown and restart your machine .......

Please tell us what happens

dl65
OK.  You're going to loose me for awhile while I go through it.  Will post when I'm back on the air.

Dave
Ok ...... Go for it I'll keep an eye out for you .
BTW ...Do you have SP2 on that cd ?  ( It will make your reinstall faster )

dl65  Thanks again for your attention.

No I did not have SP2 on the disk, just SP1.  But that brings up some issues that I think may have caused my problem.  That doesn't say that I have a solution yet.

During the install I had a number of files that could not be read.  They were files that seemed to be Java related such as javacypt.dll, jdbgmgr.exe, javapecn.hlp and so forth.  We all know Microsoft's feeling about Java so I figgured that these were just part of the ongoing battle.  One file did bother me though which was clspack.exe.  I haven't done a search yet on this one, just thought I'd mention it.

I did get another message that was troublesome which was, at the 9 minutes to go mark: "has not passed Window Logo TESTING to verify its compatabliliy with Window XP.  This software will not be installed.  Contact your System Administrator."  But it kept going and seemed to go through the entire install process.  One thing to note is that I have not added any hardware to this system since I bought it so I don't know what they were referring to since they did not mention what they were not installing.  I have also used the Microsoft Site where they look at your hardware configuration to verify that it is suitable for XP.

Now the interesting part.  I have the XP SP2 CD so before I did anything, except to verify that I still did not have access to the control panel, I attempted to install it.  This stopped very early with a message that I still had an application running called smss.exe.  I went to the internet and searched on this name.  This is a problem file which can carry a worm which is known by many names.  For example 'W32.Dalbug.Worm", W32/Ladex.worm, etc.  There are more than one file involved.  The list I have accumulated so far is: smss.exe, csrss.exe, Lady.exe, W32.Dalbug.worm, WNT.XdalBug.worm.  The smss.exe and csrss.exe are Microsoft Windows required files, but someone learned how to modify them and span other things including taking over the Control Panel and if you do certain things will corrupt the register( Is Microsoft going to continue this insane design into their new operating system? ).

I think I know how I got it.  I think it has been in my system for a very long time, perhaps since almost day 1 which would be almost 2 years.  My system is a dual processor 3Mhz with 1GB of RAM.  I think it was able to hide itself until one of two things happened.

I recently moved and switched from DSL to Broadband.  That my prime suspect because there was information on my google search on smss.exe that aluded to it.

My second suspect is that we are switching over to Vonage for our phone system and to network my two systems( a powerful system in its day running Windows 98 ).

Now all I have to do is to figgure out what to do about it short of re-formatting my two hard disks and starting completely from scratch.

Any suggestions?

And again, thank you for all your attention.

Dave

Solve : Application has encounterd a problm?

Answer»

This is the error message im getting and explaination is below:
"Irth client has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".

Irth is a game I have been playing with no problem til yesturdays patch. After the patch I attempted to log into game and after I started the game launcher and it updated files I got the above messege. The head developer of the game thinks its a os problem and suggested I "restore" to an earlier date (before patch) I restored my comp as directed and after hours of patching I STILL got the same above message.  I have error messages in event viewer and when the head dev looked at the pic I took of the event viewer he said it didnt tell him much. My bf is about to REINSTALL the whole OS, but before we do that I thought I might be able to get some help here.

Firewalls is permitting Irth client
Disabled spy sweeper
Disabled Nortin Utilities
I uninstalled the game and REINSTALLED it also, with the same results.i have a western digital 80gb 7200 rpm/8mb buffer

I HOPE I gave u ENOUGH info. How can I get the game to work again.OS formatting is the last option.

A simple try might solve your purpose  8-)

Uninstall and reinstall the game.

Keep us updated. That was what I did first thing...I reinstalled the game and still got the same error message.

today I took out the Windows xp home edition disk to reinstall the os. On the main menu the disk gave me the option to install os or Repair, so I chose repair 1st. After repairing was done I tried logging into game and got the same error message. So I felt I had no choice but to reinstall the os.

I preceded to install the windows home Xp everything was going fine until I got to the "partition" part. It gave me a choice....install on Ftps (i think, it wasnt an FAT) or unpartition. I 1st chose "unpartition", next screen told me that it was to small to install onto. So I chose FTPS (that was my only other choice) The next screen told me that if I continued to install on FTPS partition it is posible that I would be installing another operating system and that the operating system would become unstable. Well the words "unstable" and "2 os" made me back out of the whole process. I have done this before but I forgot what I did on the partition part. Should I continue and ignore the message about 2 os and unstability. I dont understand why there would be 2 os there to begin with. Im installing an os which I thought would wipe out the old os. Help if u can...
Thank you....

Solve : windows xp professional problem!?

Answer» HI i have an e- machines pc at home. first it SAID i had a virus so i loaded in my restore disc i got with my pc when i bought it. now that ive loaded that disc a PROMPT says that there is something wrong with windows and that it cant run itself. it gives me options of going to safe mode, dos mode or normally start windows. i wanna know whats wrong and how i can fix it?I am assuming you reformated the hard disk and reinstalled Windows from scratch.   If this is the case, try it again.  Maybe something got improperly transfered, or for that MATTER,  try a repair installation.   If this does not work,   perhaps there is something wrong with your media.   EITHER your  CD is bad,  or maybe your CD drive is having problems reading the CD.  I have run into situations myself where switching CD Rom drives will complete  a sucessful windows installation.   F**king Windows.
