Solve : Cant get past welcome screen?

Answer»

My COMPUTER is failing to load past the "Welcome; loading personal settings..." screen on XP. Ive tried restarting it several times. I am at a loss for ideas. Right before this happened, i ran a spyware/virus SCAN with Microsoft Anti-Spyware. After the scan was complete, the program requested i restart my computer. I did that and thats when my computer decided to stop working.
I'm a student and i need my computer to function asap. firetiger5000..... Usually Antispyware doesnt ask for a restart ..... was anything malicous FOUND by Antispyware ?

Have you tried rebooting into safe mode to see if it will load from there ?

dl65  i have attempted the safe mode restart and that failed to work as wellWhat ERROR message did you get with the failed safe mode? There wasnt an error message. Safe Mode failed to load, just as regular xp had failed.
To answer dl65's first question, the program did find 3 malicious entities: cydoor, altnet, and a third that i cannot remember. I did the ACTION to remove the malicious spyware/adware and thats when it asked me to restart. And you are right, i dont remember it asking me to restart in previous instances.

Solve : Password prompted on resume from standby?

Answer»

Hi,
I have this DELL latitude laptop running Win XP pro, sp2. It used to be configured so that when coming back from standby or HIBERNATE mode, it would not prompt me for my password - this is what I want.
But today, I set the computer up so that it is now part of a DOMAIN (it wasn't before), and now it keeps prompting me for my password when waking up. If I go in the power management options, advanced tab, the option "Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" is CHECKED and *grayed out*, so I can't uncheck it - this is my problem. The user account from where I'm doing this is part of the local administrators group, but not the domain administrators group.
So is it that when you are part of a domain, it always prompt you for your password when resuming from standby and you don't have the option? Is there a way to bypass this grayed out check box? Thanks!

Cheers,
Francois

That MEANS you domain administrator has make a generic profile and put all users or you into it.

Ask you domain administrator for that.

In general these things don't have any relationship with domain unless specially did. Quote

That means you domain administrator has make a generic profile and put all users or you into it.

Yeah, that's what I'm finally starting to understand. Thanks for your answer.

Solve : XP boot problem with AGP440.sys?

Answer»

I have a laptop with no CD-ROM drive but I do have a floppy drive. OS: XP Professional.
Laptop boots no problem - reaches the Windows XP loading SCREEN, with the BAR and moving blue thing, and then stops.

I have tried using all the OPTIONS under F8. When I choose the option which allows you to see which files are being loaded it stops every time at agp440.sys

I used boot disks, but these don't give me access to C:\ !!!

Two questions that I would greatly appreciate an answer to:
(1) Can I create a boot disk that will give me access to C:\ ??
(2) Can I overwrite the corrupt agp440.sys file with one on a floppy boot disk.

Any help would be most welcome.
Cheers
Xerxes   You will NEED a BOOTABLE CDROM sooner or later. In this case, perhaps sooner?

Solve : Old user folder?

Answer»

Hi,
This isnt urgent or serious or whatever so it can WAIT, but after various problems with windows, and then eventually it stating that FILES were missing, I did a system restore. I used the built in one, accessed by pressing f11 whilst starting up, and it made a mess of things. I then useed a restore DVD. This took longer but everyting was wiped and re-installed as I wanted it, and te problems were solved. However, this time round I created and ACCOUNT under the name 'Matty' instead of 'Matthew'. So now there is a folder on my data drive (windows is seperate) called 'Matthew' next to 'Matty' with nothing in it, unacessible an undeletable that appears to be a leftover from before the system restore.
How do i delete it?
I am the only user on this computer.Does this fix it?

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.phpIt didnt work, but it doesn't really matter! its just a bit annoyingWould you rather just undo the restoration? How long ago did this happen?

FlameIf Killbox didn't work you didn't use it correctly.I had a SIMILAR problem with a folder I was trying to change permissions on.  The dir is now inaccessible.  I can see the root and files in the root, and I can delete a file in the root with file killer, but no subdirectories.  It couldn't kill sub-directories where I don't have permissions (or should I say, where I screwed the permissions up).OK, I changed my mind, now it DOES matter!
I recently booted in DOS and looked in the directory (windows wouldnt let me) and ALL my old files are in there from before the system restore! I can't change or dlelete any of them THOUGH...
I would either like to be able to use them or delete them, but I would not like them to just be hanging around wasting space.

Solve : start up virus scan?

I for the life of me cannot remember how to set up my Norton to run through a scan during start up. I am running Internet Security suite 2005 and cannot find anything in the options there. I vaguely remember going through the Boot.ini but cant remember. I am running Windows XP Home SP2.  any help would be greatly appreciated
You mean autorun?  :-?No i mean have it come on during the boot up before the other programs start. I know you could do it in 98 but DONT remember how or if you can do it in XP :-/I'm tired so excuse me, but I still don't quite understand... At startup you want to run a virus scan, or have auto protect (live protection) running? If you can tell me which ONE, it will help toclear out the clouds in my cluttered head.

FlameNo worries bud, I am probalby not being clear, have that prob sometimes
No I want Norton to do a Virus scan while the computer is booting up. After the splash screen and during start-up, run the virus scan before all the process modules start running.

Am I confusing you even more?  lolSo you want a full virus scan to begin on startup?

I am having a problem with the sytem locking up when I run a scan so I want to do it before anything boots. I am running XP Pro SP2 on an old IBM thinkpad A20m P3. Solve : "non system disk" when insert Win2K boot floppy?

Answer»

I have formatted the HD in my ibm thinkpad (390X 2626-HOG,P2,400mhz,6gHD,formerly Win98) I have the Win2K CD rom from which I have made 4 boot disks as I couldn't get the BIOS to boot from the CD drive.

When I try to boot from the 1st floppy, I get a "Non system disk" error.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

before REFORMATTING the HD, I updated the BIOS  (spsdis55.exe)Iss your computer set to boot first from the floppy in the BIOS? I would remake the  boot floppies and try again. Something wrong there.yeah, it automatically goes to the A drive after giving the option to go to BIOS, it then says invalid system disk, replace the disk and press any key

Gonna try and get HOLD of another copy of Win 2k, see if that works.

anyone know how to boot from CD? if possible,

Thanks

If your computer has the option to boot from CD first (in the BIOS), it is automatic when the machine is restarted with the W2K disc in the drive. (Be sure and remove any floppy before trying this.

Did you try re-doing the 4 boot floppies?I THINK I've worked out how to get it to boot from CD, (moving the Cd above the FDD on the startup option of BIOS) and tried to boot from the CD, but same result. I also tried to make another set of floppies from another win2k disk, that didn't work either.

Have I got a firmware/bios issues?

out of ideas :-?Just out of curiosity why did you update the BIOS? Are you sure you got the right one?The BIOS update was via the ibm web site

The release date was Dec 01, so I'm guessing it would support w2k.

I've just had a look at the symtoms corrected by the BIOS update and support for w2k is one of them, although that was a fix in a previous update, surely the latest BIOS would be cumulative and include all previous update?

w98 seemed to run fine in the 2 DAYS before I formatted the HD

and before anyone else asks, no it hasn't "ran out of coal! "Yes, BIOS updates are usually inclusive, so i don't think W2k is the problem. Just for grins, can  you try booting witth a Win98 boot floppy  and format the drive? With a machine that age, hardware is suspect too.

Managed to convince an IT guy at work to help out, he put in one of their w2k discs and it started loading straight away!

apparently I got 2 dodgy copies, come to think of it, I'm not sure if they were ligitimate copies..... I guess you get what you pay for.

Thanks for all the help guys, good forum, I'm learning loads off it just by looking at other peoples problems and I hope mine has help OTHERS (namely not to download/buy/borrow knocked off MS stuff!!) Quote

Solve : "Send To..." problem?

Answer»

Hi all.

I can no longer add shortcuts to my "Send To..." context menu.

I used to do it by hilighting the SendTo folder then File --> New --> Shortcut which gave me the wizard to create the shortcut.

Now, instead of getting the wizard, all I get is a small message window with "Problem Creating Object" in the title bar, and the "The operation completed successfully" message.

Then a shortcut appears called "New Shortcut" but it's empty. It goes nowhere.

Something else I just noticed that may be related is that when I right-click the start button,
the "Open" option is grayed out and inactive.

I use win98se.

I'm not a super expert, but I'm no newbie either. This has got me stumped.
The only thing I can think of which might COINCIDE with this, is my recent usage of a personal data eraser that erases a few registry keys. But that's should be related to web data. Not anything system related.

Anyways, there it is.
I hope you guys/gals have the fix, 'coz I miss my SendTo option

Is your windows uptodate?
Should be.How long since you reinstalled Windows? It might just be time to solve all problems this way.    Can you create shortcuts in other folders or on your desktop? If you can, create the shortcut you want there, then copy and paste it into the "SendTo" folder. I assume you're creating a shortcut to an application and not to a folder.
RickDarn it! We must be telepathic

Telepathic? Not that I know of.
We both wrote about the same thing at the same time.
But your post showed up just before mine.

When I clicked the "Post" button and saw your post and mine SAYING the same thing,
I edited mine by erasing it and then I wrote the little joke about our telepathy

Dragging the exe file to the SendTo folder does create a shortcut.
It's not a fix to the problem, but it will do for now

Solve : recovery pro?

Answer»

hi folks, does any one out there know if it is possible to install a recovery program if WINDOWS cannot run? please help. What is causing Windows not to run? Do you get an error MESSAGE? What are the computer's specifications?

Is this XP, and is it Home or Pro?

Do you have an XP CD and have you tried loading the recovery console?hi, its xp home, is there a recovery program that will run at set up , (i am not sure if i am using the correct terminology) im only quite new at this.errer message is (corrupt or missing) \WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEMHave you got an XP CD so that you can load the recovery console?yes i have the xp cd , but nothing seems to respond, when the disk is inserted, am i missing something?Did you reboot the machine with the disk inserted?  And then press any key to boot from the CD as directed on screen?sorry not sure how to reboot the machine when it is in this state,Put in the CD, then restart the machine (power button if nothing else).yes i have done as you said , the cd has not started,
wonder whySounds like other hardware issues. Give us the history on the problem and some specifics about the machine.hi again, the machine is a northgate re-build type affair, with an 80 Gb HD , 512 Mb RAM , there only seems to be 65 Gb available on the HD, guess thats the recovery partition, or something. i have recently replaced the RAM stick as the machine was constantly restarting. the "phoenix" recover pro was deleted from add/remove programs. and this where i stand now, (the pc is 1 inch from the trash can).      thanks peter.  Did you change the bios sequence so that it will boot from the cd?

80gb is about 74.5gb binary so you MAY have quite a large recovery partition.

Are all the fans running and is the cabinet DUST free?i will check the bios sequence, cheersAfterf this "Recovery Pro" fiasco, you may benefit from a clean install of Windows.

Now when I start windows it comes up 'Registry entries missing' (or is it data? either way...) HELP? please?

cheers.

Even if it turns out not to be those entries any info will help.7 views come on guys any ideas at all?Windows???  What Windows???  98, 98se, 2k, me, xp.

Registry backup???  System Restore???

How can the sickness be diagnosed without info???

What was the ACTUAL message you got???

What have you tried???

Indeed. Information begets information.  It says 'Registry Data Missing' when windows XP launches to desktop.

Beget me! lead_sharp..... Well ,you've got me , I have read your post 5 times and I am still AMAZED at what part of never mess around in the registry without having backed it up you missed .....just in case .....something is removed that shouldnt have been removed ....... Your lucky your pc still boots up at all.  Do you use any programs that does a registry back-up as part of their cleaning procedure ....for example spybot ?

If your system is clear of any nasties , you could try and use your system restore and set it back to just before you made the incorrect removals.

dl65

Now that we have enough information to ponder the problem the begetting hath started...  And - you didn't do us the courtesy of responding to the questions in full.

I must assume that you have tried nothing so here's one possible tho' not certain recovery option...

Boot into Safe Mode (F8).  From the Advanced Options Menu select "Last Known Good Configuration" and go from there.

Good luckOne thing I used to do is drop to real mode ("Restart in MS-DOS mode") and do a
"scanreg /restore" (without the quotes).
This will re-install an older backup of the registry.

Mud - Is that option available in XP???Sorry Dusty, I'm still with win98se and I know next to nothing about XP.

If XP has the "restart in MS-DOS mode" option, then it's probably possible.
All I did was ask for help.

Never mind. Quote

It says 'Registry Data Missing' when windows XP launches to desktop.

Mud - thanks for coming back.

The OP indicated he was running XP - I thought you had discovered a NEW option in XP where the only options I get are "Standby" "Turn off" and "Restart" (XP Home) - As you will know XP does not run over Dos so the option to restart in Dos mode would be most peculiar.

Quote
All I did was ask for help.

Never mind.

Did neither System Restore nor Last Good Config help you???

Nope.

It's not actualy effecting anything (yet).

My annoyance here is part my somehow expecting you to know I've just finnished my third 12 hour shift in an old folks home and part SOME of you for being snotty gits.

We're not all computer experts.

The sys restore didn't seem to work simple said couldn't restore to point, whatever, it didn't work.

I will return when I've had some kip and in a less foul mood.Maybe there should be a forum specific to Windows XP.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Solve : Startup crash??

Answer»

I recently uninstalled my Norton Systemworks 2005 to install the 2006 edition. After I uninstalled, it prompted me to restart my computer before I could install the new one. I restarted, but every time I get to my desktop/password prompt screen, I get a quick flash of the blue screen of death and my computer restarts itself. The only way I am ABLE to log on is by starting in safe mode. I have TRIED LOOKING at all of my startup programs to see if maybe one of those is CAUSING my system to crash, but I am unsure.

Please help! You didn't bother to post your operating system, but booting into safe mode and running system restore may get you back to where you were before this happened. Safe mode may aloow you to complete the removal. F8 at bootup, beforfe the Windows logo.

Why you want more Norton is beyond me, but there are specific ways to get rid of this. Check on the Symantec web site. It can be virus like in it's removal procedure. Imagine that!Operation system is Windows XP Home.

And once in Safe Mode, how would I do the RECOVERY thing? Also, do I need any CDs to do any of this? Here you go:

Ram 2GB

Clevo 900 motherboard.

Here is my problem.

I tried to reinstall windows, so I put in the XP disk and resatrted the computer. It tries to install but before I get to the screen when it says agree/disagree I get this error message. What do I do? I tried CHKDSK but it detected nothing wrong. The hard drive is not seated correctly, he hard drive has problems, or there is a RAM problem, or a failed IDE controller.

#1 is the most likely. What happened prior to all of this? I have an old Dell laptop that if grabbed correctly pulls the hard drive caddy out just enough to cause this.

You can also boot with the XP CD (if you got one!) and run chkdsk from the recovery console.

You can also download a free RAM tester a www.memtest86.com

Let us know!Hi.. My Name is Maksim... And this might help... I had the same problem.... Everytime I try to reinstall my computer... It displays the message... the one thing that someone told me is to use... "Wipe 0" I'm not sure if you are familiar with this program...(Have a read "Wipe is a secure file wiping utility." It worked and this might be eisier and it might help too... Try reformating the hard drive... through the win xp cd... and it should work... It worked for me...

P.S. If you dont know alot about how to format a hard drive or use a Wipe 0 My advice  to you.. is to ask someone to help you....

Solve : My Network Places Problem?

Answer»

Here is the PROBLEM:  No folders show up on my Laptop under "My Network Places".

Everything was working fine up until yesterday, when I clicked on a song from another computer through my network places, the song began playing, and then the window for MNP just disappeared.  From that point on, when I reoppened MNP, nothing would show up, not even the shared folder on the laptop.

Host machine:  Wired DIRECTLY into the router (Netgear).  Running Windows XP Pro completely updated.  It can see it's own folders and not the laptops.  This machine is able to ping the laptop.  Zone Alarm firewall has been set up to allow ranges 192.168.1.2 - 5.  Windows Firewall is Off, completely, from what I can tell.  Had to disable it on my Local Area Network, not sure how it got enabled.

Laptop:  Connected to Router via Wireless Adapter (Netgear).  Running Windows XP Pro completely updated.  It can not see any folders in MNP.  There is absolutely Zero Firewall protection on this machine.

I have tried numerous solutions from many forums, none of which have worked.  Although, someone did suggest trying manipulating with the TCP/IP Protocol, by adding IPX or something.  I added Microsoft TCP/IP v6 I think, to both machines, and now I am able to ping both sides, and can manually type the addresses of the shared folders and get access.  Yet, MNP still shows nothing, and keeps telling me that it can not access Mshome, not having the right permissions or some nonsense.

I was also having Some kind of NetBT Error 4321 in the event viewer, which I seem to have fixed via registry by changing something domainmaster to false or something, I can't recall as this has kept me up all night and my mind is not working properly.  I know this probably isn't a major problem, but the simple fact that something is not working properly makes me wonder what is truely wrong.  I would like to fix this, but after spending probably too many hours on this, with no luck, I am hoping someone knows what is wrong.  Thanks guys, any help is greatly appreciated.

Please accept my preemptive appology if this is posted in the wrong place, I am new here, and I did not see a Networking Section.  Norfalk:

You have given two computers on your network the same "name":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822659
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316836/EN-US/

Make sure each has a unique NetBIOS name.

Best regards,
Doc
I actually checked that, and the host machine is named "Master-Bdrm" while the Laptop is cleverly  named "Laptop".  But then again, I really don't know squat about networking.  Is the NetBios name diferent from the computer name?  I have never gotten the Error Message,"Duplicate name exists." When the computer starts up as the KB suggests.  Also, the error has stopped being reported.  I found on another forum that it also has to do with the computers competing to be the Master Browser or something, so I made changes to the registry that were suggested.

The Network worked great up until that MOMENT everything vanished.  I really appreciate the time you have spent replying to me.  Before I try the netbios thing that Microsoft has suggested, I WANTED to be sure that I really need to do it do you think I do?Norfalk:

Try to repair the network connection on the laptop:

1. Click the Windows Start button
2. Right-click My Network Places and click Properties
3. In Network Connections, right-click the icon for your LAN and click Repair
4. If you receive any error messages, let us know what they are

Best regards,
Doc
Sorry if I forgot to mention, the computer still gets onto the internet, as I am on the Laptop in question as we speak.  I can also get to the share folders on the other machine if I happen to remember what the location address is and manually type it in.  Everything seems to work, not sure how well exactly, but nothing shows up in My Network Places. If there is anything I have not added that is needed, let me know.OK, try mapping a network drive:

1. Right-click My Network Places and click Map Network Drive
2. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, enter the drive letter you want Windows to assign to the folder in the Drive list.
3. Type the path using the UNC in the Folder box, or click Browse to browse to the folder on the other computer
4. Select the Reconnect at Logon check box
5. Click Finish

Best regards,
DocOk using the mapping, I am able to get to to the folders on the other computer.  Still nothing showing in My Network Places.  Why doesn't it refresh the folders?

I just clicked on View Workgroup Computers and got the error message:

"Workgroup is not accessible.  You might not have permissions to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

That has been a constant through out the entire day/night/day, regardless of whtever I have tried or accomplished (not much)Norfalk:

Make sure you log on to both computers using exactly the same user name and password.

Solve : second operating system?

Answer»

Hi there,
I have managed to format a second hard drive that I have installed, with the FAT32 file system.
My main hard drive is formatted with the NTFS file system and the operating system is Win XP.
I WISH to RUN older DOS-based programs on my second (FAT32) drive. (e.g. Tomb Raider 1 etc).
Is it possible to install an operating system for the drive from my WIN XP cd? Or must I find a DOS based system to install on it?
If I need to install an older DOS based system, do I have to use windows or is there ANYTHING else out there that would do?
Thanx for your timeJust install DOS on the other drive.Nice and simple. Thanx.
A few questions though.......
Being an ABSOLUTE novice at this, where do I get the DOS to install?
Is it on my WIN XP disc?
Is it AVAILABLE to download?
These may seem inane questions, and I apologise in advance  XP does not have it, check your PMs.You are always ahead to load the OLDEST operating system first. Win98 likes to be on the first partition of the first hard drive.

Solve : upgrading operating environments?

Answer»

I have an OLD IBM computer ( 5 yrs old) with Windows 98.  Its it possible to upgrade to Windows XP with this computer ?I doubt if you have enough RAM or hard DRIVE space to MAKE it worthwhile, but please post some specs about your MACHINE and I will be happy to advise. I do have it running nicely on a PC300PL  PIII-550 box, but it has 384 meg RAM.

Do you have the Windows 98 CD to reinstall that if needed? Are you having problems with the machine? Why the urge to upgrade?

Solve : DVD Hardware Problem (Drive)?

Answer»

Hi there here are my computer specifications:

Systemax Computer (Five years old)
Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz
RAM 256MBs PNY
ATI All-In-Wonder 128 PRO 32MBs
Western Digital 55GBs IDE
NEC CD-R/RW Rewritable IDE
Plextor PX-740A DVD-R/RW Rewritable EIDE
Sparkle Power Supply Unit 250Watts

Now to the point this DVD Burner is about a month old ever sense I tried to burn either a DVD, CD, or just files to transfer to one of them at least when I tried to burn some files to a cd it would REACH at a certain percentage like 20% and automatically reboot the machine I am thinking it could be a power supply issue, processor issue, or some kind of hardware issue the computer is five years old was using the nero oem software to burn the files on tried other software and the problem STILL occurs although I can't take it back sense it's passed 30 days but would like some help if offeredJust on general principle I would install a name brasnd quality power supply > 350w. An "el cheapo" is not a good solution foro any machine. "Sparkle" brand and 250w do not instill confidence in me.

You can try the problematic drive on ANOTHER machine on the outside chance that it has a problem. Has it ever worked correctly in that machine?Hmmm so you think it's a power supply issue i'll have to check out some brands like ultra and stuff thanks for the INFORMATION my cousin as the same exact dvd burner as me and works perfectly fine for him oh well thanks again  I would take your drive and try it on your cousin's machine. It will just take a few minutes, and he already has the software loaded, so that would give you a quick and definite answer.

Look at his power supply while you're in there!

Solve : New and/or Updated Programs Won't Connect?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to sort out a PROBLEM a friend is having with getting some PROGRAMS to connect to the internet. Here's what happens:

It seems that programs that were installed previously can connect just fine as they always did but any NEW or updated programs will not. For example, Firefox just released an update to version 1.5. Version 1.5 was working fine but since the update it does not. I tried downloading and installing Opera. It will not connect. I tried downloading and installing Spybot S&d. It will not connect to get the latest definitions.

Meanwhile, Internet explorer still works and any other programs that have been on this system previously can still connect to get updates or whatever just fine.

The connection is via cable MODEM. There is no router in use. The firewall is the Windows firewall and turning it off does not fix the problem. The anti-virus program is AVG.

The system is a P4 2.8GHz system with 512MB RAM. Its running XP with SP2.

Any thoughts/ideas welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,
Lloyd

Solve : MCI devices?

Answer»

When I insert CD into the CD-RW I get a noise and a screen full of "no mci device open" The only way to stop the noise is to eject the CD.  Then I get the message that there is no CD in the CD-ROM, Please insert CD.  I have tried this in three DIFFERENT computers and get the same message.  I can "burn" CD's and also open other pre-recorderd CD.  I have checked for updates, re-installed XP-Pro and SP2.  I don't know what this MMESSAGE MEANS. Here's what Microsoft says:

Solve : Enternet error?

Answer»

While teaching a student a musical program on her computer I received this error: "Enternet has caused an error in KRNL386.exe." and the computer froze. She TOLD me that her computer does this about once per day. She's running WinME on a DELL computer with 128mb RAM. I didn't have too much time to check anything else. I've never seen an Enternet error before. Does ANYONE know what this is and why it's happening? ThanksI'm not quite sure, but I can OFFER one piece of advice... Get rid of ME... It's terribly bugged. Thanks for the advice. I never knew that about ME. I won't get my hands on the computer for about twenty days while she's gone to Europe.Well, if I were you... While she's gone, I'd try to get my hands on a different OS, such as XP or maybe even 98 (if it gets down to that). Quote

Well, if I were you... While she's gone, I'd try to get my hands on a different OS, such as XP or maybe even 98 (if it gets down to that).

Recommending XP for a computer with 128 meg RAM is just BAD advice!

WinME is doable, especially if it used to work on that machine. It probably has one or more corrupted files, and a lot of crud, and may be the originakl OS installation from when that computer was new.

Backing up data and reinstalling the operating system makes a LOT more sense.

Solve : Mouse pointer problem?

Answer»

When I bring up many sub-context menus, like from the Start button, then Programs, and so on..., my mouse pointer drops to the bottom of the screen, and won't go more than an inch above the taskbar.
I can move it from side to side, but not vertically.

The same happens with the top menu buttons of some (not all) apps.

The only way I can return to normal is by a Windows restart.

My box is basic with fairly generic hardware. Nothing weird.
I've been running this computer for 6 years, and this problem started about 1 year ago.
Win98se

Any Ideas?
Is this an optical mouse?  Have you tried a different mouse?Yep!

Tried different mouse(s) and a whole bunch of other things.

I've already posted this problem on other forums, but no fixes as yet.

Now I'm just hunting around hoping to find someone familiar with the problem and with the solution  Does this ONLY happen when you right-click with the mouse?  If so, for a quick fix, start using the sub-menu key on your keyboard (next to the right ctrl key most Win95+ KEYBOARDS).

You may have a fault on your motherboard.  There's a slight chance that it's a Windows driver problem, but motherboard fault seems more likely to me - or perhaps mangled PS2 pins?

Here's a thought - try a USB mouse instead.  If you get the same problem then it's a Windows/driver problem.  If not, it's a hardware problem.I hate to admit it, but you might be right about the mobo.

It's the best suggestion so far

Have you tried reducing hardware accelleration? Right click desktop/properties/settings/advanced/move slider to the left.IMO a corded PS2 mouse is the most reliable of all.

BTW, is your computer free of viruses and spyware? Quote

Have you tried reducing hardware accelleration?
I'm a bit reluctant to do this SINCE it was ok for a long time on the "full" setting.

Quote
IMO a corded PS2 mouse is the most reliable of all.
I agree.

Quote
BTW, is your computer free of viruses and spyware?

Yep! No problem there.
AdAware. Spybot. Anti-virus GALORE, etc...

This problem is strictly related to an excessive number of context menus showing up on the screen at one and the same time. It's the only time the problem happens.
It's a bloody mind bender this one
If there are so many items in start/programs that is clutters the screen and makes it hard to navigate, you can combine several items under one menu listing with its own sub menus. In windows explorer navigate to window/start menu/programs. In the right pane, right click and select new/folder. Name it something like cleanup then drag and drop all the cleanup items to it. Do the same with all your utilites. Items that have a plus sign should not be EXPANDED but the entire item dropped into the desired folder. After doing this, REBOOT and new folders should appear under start/programs with their own sub menus. Thanks!
Good idea, but what I'd really like is to just be able to use my mouse the way I could before the problem.
I would try a known working, corded PS2 mouse after deleting all the mouse entries from the Device Manager and rebooting.Have you used any utilities that could have removed some necessary registry entries. If so, boot to DOS - commant prompt only and run scanreg/restore.

Hello, I have a HP PAVILION N5240 Notebook that is running Windows XP. When I boot up after windows LOADS I get this following error: "Explorer.EXE - Unable to locate Component" (Could not locate WININET.DLL) . My laptop was working fine before.

I can see my desktops background and that is all. I leave it on to see if anything else loads but nothing will show. There are no LONGER any icons not even the windows Taskbar. My SCREENSAVER comes out as well, but I can not access anything. I try to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot my notebook but it won't even let me do that.

I was told that if I boot from my windows XP cd and choose to repair windows to find this file again that i need?Yep.  That's what you need to do.A thrillseeker would download Killbox and use the 'Get my Desktop back' button, I'm dying to know if it works for these problems.

Solve : backing up files installed from the site.?

Answer»

hi,
I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2. I wonder if I could back up the file installed from the WEB page LIKE yahoo MESSENGER so that I can EASILY re-install it later if its uninstalled or lost due to some reasons without having to have internet connection coz for yahoo messenger whole setup file isn't available in the site for DOWNLOAD. And, everytime I format my computer for any reason I've to re-install it from the site through internet taking *censored* lot of time as in my area the internet connection is too slow.

regards,
JayIf you separate your data from your operating system, by having a partitioned drive, you should just make a drive image, as this is probably the safest backup you can have.Sure, you can save those downloaded files.  Why not?  If you're downloading a program and have an option to either Save or Run the file once the download is finished, choose Save.  Then, you can start the installation by double-clicking on the file.  And, simply keep the downloaded file on a separate partition, or burn it to a CD or DVD, or save it to an external drive, etc.

Solve : Windows doesn't recognize internet connection?

Answer»

:-?
I have a cable modem and windows xp.  I have had this modem for almost a year with no problems until recently.  I tried using TURBO Tax and it will not recognize my INTERNET connection even though it is running all the time.  I made sure my internet connection was setup in Turbo Tax correctly.  At FIRST I thought it was the Turbo Tax program.  But, when I went to use the Help and Suppport from my computer it also will not recognize the internet connection.  Can anyone give me suggestions on how to fix this?  I appreciate all the help I can get.

Toni  Look in Control Panel/System/Device Manager and make sure the ethernet adapter is recognized correctly.

The run Internet Connection Wizard  - Program Files/Internet Explorer/Connection Wizard/Inetwiz and choose LAN rather than modem and take the default for DHCP connection (the first choice)

Does that fix it? Can you access the internet?

You didn't bother to specify the operating system, service pack, etc,. etc. That has happened to me, too.  Cable told me to turn-off the firewall for 12 hours and reconnect.  They SAY the firewall tries to be in control and won't allow the internet.  That solution worked for me.

Solve : Password Protection?

Answer»

Hi, ive have searched the forum for my problem and have found a few problems similar but nothing that will solve my problem. I have two people who have administrator rights and need access to EVERYTHING on the computer. However i would like to have one folder with PERSONAL documents which even the other administrator cannot OPEN without a password... im trying to avoid having to setup a new profile. so in short i want to be able to protect a folder with a password from someone who has the same administrator rights as myself.I don't think you can do it with Windows.
A work around would be to zip it up with WINZIP using a password, unzip to use it & rezip when you have finished.Fed's solution is good if you don't want any new user and spend money on a software. But there're SOFTS do what you want. Of course they are shareware...Can you put the folder on a CDR and use it from there?

Solve : oem restore disk, can it be used on non-oem pc?

Answer»

I have a Compaq quick restore disk. I used it successfully on the teen's Compaq.  Two QUESTIONS:
Can I use it on a different Compaq pc?
and
What happens if I use it on a no brand pc?
All the MACHINES have win98.  The restore disk has win98.
I have two machines that are in need of fresh air.
I do not have much to lose by trying this.
I have no other win98 disk, other than buying one.I DOUBT it will work on another machine. I have never seen a Compaq restore CD that did. You can try it, but don't be surprised if no JOY.

That's how they PROTECT piracy of Windows operating systems, which is pretty much what you're planning.I thought the license allowed personal use.
I had hoped to try my restore disk on my other no name problem child.  If that is piracy, well then hoist the flag, matey.Yes, personal use on one computer!

finds nothing either.  I TRIED system restore but the problem always come back.  I THINK it

might be java related.  I would appreciate any kind of help.Hammer:

Try using the Windows XP System Configuration Utility to disable any STARTUP programs you think may be causing the problem:

1. Click Start and click Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type MSCONFIG and click OK.
3. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the Startup tab.
4. Clear the check box next to any suspicious program.
5. Click Apply and Close.
6. Click Restart in the message box.
7. After your computer restarts, see if the symptoms persist.

Let us know the name of any program listed in the System Configuration Utility that you are unsure about disabling.

Best regards,
Doc
Thank you very much I think that did it.  There were several start-up programs whose only

job was to query the web for updates I unchecked all of them and played on of my games

for about an hour.  At this point all seems ok.  Thank you again.Hammer:

No, thank you for letting me help you out!

Solve : Can there be no Operating System Computer?

Answer»

:)Hi all,

Can there be a Computer running a dedicated program (which accesses only Network information and processess it along with information entered by the User) without an Operating System itself ?  :-?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

_VinodYou must have an operating system for a computer to work.OS is like food. you must have it to survive.  I meant that the EXCLUSIVE program which needs to be run on the computer do the basic functions required for the program alone to run, like complete memory usage, hard disc usage (only for temporary data, as the data is going to be transmitted to another machine for permanent storage) and also handle a few choices of Processors?Without an operating system the computer has no function. It cannot PROCESS anything or run any program. But WHY would you want it to do that... Its quite pointless in my opinion:-/

SodaProbably a homework question. Can't say I blame him, though. I'd go here for answers to homework if I didn't have enough real problems as is.

Just to repeat and emphasize what was already said, computers need an operating system to do any real function. Now, this is not to say it will do NOTHING at all without an OS. I found that out trying to install XP OEM.

If you don't have an OS, the computer will get past the diagnostic screen, meaning it will recognize disks, memory, etc. but you'll get an error message before anything else happens. It needs to recognize the drives to install Windows/Linux/whatever in the first place, but you can't run programs, navigate drives, that kind of thing. This is not a HomeWork Question.

The point is that in order to run one single program which requires only a very limited operations and stores nothing in the HardDisk permanently, do we need a full fledged OS?

Cann't the program be added with some of the features of a Mono-tasking OS so that it can load and run on the machine?

_VinodI guess it depends on what the program will run on.
DOS is just a few MBs, 3.X is about 20MBs, W2K & XP can be skinned down to a couple of hundred or less, a skinny linux can be run from a floppy. :)I MEAN exactly that. Can there be an architecture possible that loads from a HardDisk and starts only one program and that's it. No more operations are required. It just has to look after that program's memory and Read/Write and Port Communc=ication operations.

That means the Os itself will be very lean and does not require high memory or other requirements.

The Licensing Fee also will be drastically reduced.

Am I right? What program do you want to run??Any DOS based system will do what you want as LONG as your executable will run in that environment of course.
If licencing costs are likely to become a problem, FreeDOS should be worth looking at.The Program run entirely based on HTML, JSP and other Web Based programming languages.

So the Skinned exclusive OS must be having some of the functionalities of IE.

I am not interest4ed in knowing whether there is already such a system. Can such a system be theoritically possible?LOL ......So I guess thats why your website is down ?   NO OPERATING SYSTEM

Solve : emachines restore disk?

Answer»

this may sound like a stupid question but i want to make sure, i don't know the intimate details of computer insides

my computer broke down a few days AGO and it turned out i needed a new motherboard, it's all done and i got it back YESTERDAY. My problem is i don't know if i can use my original restore disk (my computer is an emachines with XP)

when i got my computer back i'm missing half the stuff i used to have ie. excel ETC, which is on my restore disk but i don't want to restore if it's going to mess up the system again, i just paid 110 pounds to get it fixed i can't do that again.

thanks for any help you can give me If it is an eMachine restore disk, it may very well be tied to an eMachine motherboard, and will not install on anything else - period. Some manufacturers are like that - Gateway in particular which owns eMachines.

If it does work, it will probably format (erase) your hard drive totally before reloading what you had when you got the machine, so back up your important data first.

Is it a Windows CD or does it say Restore CD?
it says restore cd, i've used it before on my PC before the new motherboard and it does wipe everything i was just worried it might break the new motherboard It won't break it, it just may not install at all, and if it does there may be problems as it is not the original hardware. Once the data is saved you have nothing to lose by trying.

A CALL or e-mail to eMachines might be in order if it doesn't work as your purchase price did include a copy of Windows.

Why WOULD I be getting these WARNINGS?  It's a new computer (a few weeks old) and I haven't installed any fax software or hardware, nor am I attempting to fax anything.   The warnings seem to be listed every 30 minutes or so

ThanksGo into Services, stop the Fax Service & SET it to manual.Thanks.  Not sure how that got turned on as I'm told it's off by default and I've never touched Services before.  However, that did the trick.

Hi there im really HOPING you can help me!

I have a laptop running windows XP and recently i had a virus i think and lots of spyware. So i ran norton anti-virus and got rid of the virus' and ran a number of spyware removers and got rid of the spayware/adware.

However now when i go into control panel nearly all of the icons dont 'work' when i couple click or right click - open on them. Also on the desktop when i reight click and select properties that doesnt work. Also until about an hour ago when i pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL a message came up saying "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator", first of all im the only one who uses the laptop, so i checked a few sites and by going into the regstry i managed to get the task manager back up.

Also, every now and again when i start the laptop it LOADS up and then...the dreaded blue screen comes up, but this only happens every now and again. So if you could give me some advice on how to get the control panel etc up and any more that you see FIT i would be muchly appreciative.

I am so stuck and im hoping you can help. Thanks. Jonny Dean. biggyblue......It sounds like you may still have some nasties .........

dl65  Hi, thanks for the REPLY. ok ive downloaded that but i cant run an UPDATE because the laptop wont connect to the internet either, im on the pc at the moment. Is there anyway i can download the update via this then put it onto a disc or something? Ive ran the anti virus anyway and nothing came up - all clear. Thanks.Do you have a shiny Windows CD that you can use to reload the operating system, if necessary? Sometimes you can cobble together a solution, but that is the ultimate cure.
