A cannon shell lands 2 km away from the cannon. A second shell, fired identically, breaks into two equal parts at the highest point. One part falls vertically. How far from the cannon will the other land? (a) 2 km (b) 3 km (c) 4 km (d) 5 km |

Answer» Correct Answer is: (b) 3 km Let v = horizontal component of velocity of shell, and T = total time of flight ∴ vT = 2 km. When the shell breaks, the part which falls vertically does not have any horizontal velocity, and hence the other part acquires horizontal velocity 2v, by conservation of momentum. Also, its remaining time of flight will be T/2. It will travel a further distance (2v) (T/2) = vT = 2 km. ∴ it will land 3 km away from the cannon. |
