(a) What happens to the atomic number of an element when it emits: 1. an alpha particle 2. a beta particle. (b) Explain why alpha and beta particles are deflected in an electric or a magnetic field but gamma rays are not deflected in such a field. |

Answer» (a) 1. When an a-particle is emitted, its atomic number decreases by 2. 2. When a beat particle is emitted, the atomic number increases by 1. (b) α-particles and beta particles when subjected to an electric field are deflected. This is so because both the α - particles and beta particles are charged. Electric field exerts a force on them which deflects them. However, γ rays are not deflected because they are not charged and do not experience any force. Hence they are not deflected. |
