Define the following terms :(a) Enthalpy(b) Entropy

Answer»

(a) Enthalpy : The amount of heat exchanged by a system with it's surroundings at constant pressure and temperature is called Enthalpy.

Enthalpy (H) = U + PV

Change in Enthalpy ∆H = ∆U + P∆U

→ It is a state function.

∆H = ∆HProducts – ∆Hreactants

(b) Entropy : Entropy is taken as a Measure of disorder of molecules (or) randomness of the system. Greater the disorder of molecules in a system the higher is the Entropy.

→ It is a state function.

→ It depends on the temperature, pressure of the state.

Entropy changed ∆S = qrev/T

For a spontaneous process ∆S = +ve

Solids (Low Entropy)

liquids (Moderate Entropy)

Gases (High Entropy)
