Distinguish between Sodium sulphate and sodium sulphite |
|
Answer» Sodium sulphate is dissolved in water and barium chloride solution is added, an insoluble white precipitate of barium sulphate is obtained. Na2SO4 + BaCl2 → BaSO4 + 2NaCl(White ppt) Sodium sulphite is warmed with dilute sulphuric acid, a colourless gas with a pungent and suffocating smell is evolved. When this gas is bubbled through acidified solution of potassium dichromate, it turns its colour from orange to green. Na2SO3 + H2SO4 → Na2SO4 + H2O + SO2 K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 + 3SO2 → K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + H2O |
