Explain the indus water treaty |

Answer» The\xa0Indus Waters Treaty is a water-distribution treaty\xa0between India\xa0and Pakistan\xa0brokered by the World Bank\xa0to use the water available in the Indus System of Rivers located in India.The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was signed in Karachi\xa0on September 19, 1960 by the first Prime minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru\xa0and then President of Pakistan Ayub Khan.According to this agreement, control over the water flowing in three "eastern" rivers of India — the Beas,\xa0the Ravi and the Sutlej\xa0with the mean flow of 33 million acre-feet (MAF) — was given to India, while control over the water flowing in three "western" rivers of India — the Indus,the Chenab\xa0and the Jhelum\xa0with the mean flow of 80 MAF\xa0— was given to Pakistan. The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan signed on September 19, 1960. The treaty was signed by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan’s President Ayub Khan. It was brokered by the World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development). |
