Genetic information is piled up in chromosomes which CONTAIN the hereditary material DNA.

Each gene has one to several alleles representing DIFFERENT expressions of a character. The number of genes is small in lower organisms. It is higher in more evolved ones,

  • E. g viruses possess 100-150 genes, mycoplasma 450-700 genes, Homosapien 25000-30000 sps.

With a species genetic diversity occurs in the differences of alleles, entire genes and chromosomal structures. Genetic diversity enables of population to adapt to it's environment and the CHANGES occurring in the environment. It results in variation in potency and concentration of reserpine being present in medicinal PLANT rauwolfia vomitoria.
