1.

Give reasons : (i) Benzoic acid is a stronger acid than acetic acid. (ii) Methanal is more reactive towards nucleophilic addition reaction than ethanal.

Answer»

(i) Benzoic acid is a stronger acid than acetic acid due to electron with drawing effect of bengene ring which stabilises the carboxylate anion while alkyl group distablises the carboxylate anion due to electron donating nature.

(ii) Methanal is more reactive than ethanal towards Nucleophilic addition reaction due to steric and electronic reasons. Presence of methyl group in ethanal hinders the approach of nucleophile to carbonyl carbon than in methanal. Methyl group also reduces the electrophilicity of the carbonyl more effectively than in methanal.
