The GEOGRAPHICAL features of Indian subcontinent have influenced the history of country_India. To see how geography of India has influenced her history, lets classify India into major geographical divisions. The Himalayan Mountains Starting from the Pamir in the extreme northwest of Ancient India, the Himalayan ranges extends towards northeast. It acts as a natural wall protecting the country from the cold arctic winds blowing from Siberia, thus, saving Northern India from extreme cold climate. The Indo-Gangetic Plains Irrigated by three important river systems: Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra, this vast plain is the most fertile and productive REGION of the Indian Subcontinent. 3. The Southern Peninsula The PLATEAU to the south of the Vindhyan Range is known as the Deccan plateau. The Deccan plateau is surrounded by the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. So, Geography always play a vital role in shaping History. It was this geography only which led to various foreign invasions into India, making it a “melting pot of NUMEROUS culture, races, religion, languages”. It also plays a key role in determining demography and economy of a region. |
