Question : Catalytic converters are fitted into automobiles to reduce emission of harmful gases. Catalytic converters change unburnt hydrocarbons into :(A) carbon dioxide and water(B) carbon monoxide(C) methane(D) carbon dioxide and methane |
|
Answer» carbon dioxide and water Catalytic converters have expensive metals namely (i) platinum (ii) palladium and (iii) rhodium (iv) (Pt-Pd and RH) as catalysts. As the exaust passes through the catalytic converter: (i) Unburnt hydrocarbons are converted into `CO_(2)` and `H_(2)O`. (ii) Carbon monoxide is changed to `CO_(2)`. (iii) Nitric oxide (NO) is changed to N gas. Vehicles equipped with catalytic converters should use unleaded petrol because lead in the petrol inactivates the CATALYST. |
