Answer» Hi, this is my first post here...
I've been called in to look at a not-so-straightforward networking problem at a client site. We're about the 4th or 5th tech comany to look at this mess, so you can imagine what we've COME across so far. I've already straightened out several connection problems and device connections with the help of the parent comany's offiste I/T support.
The shorter story:
Machine running XP, SP2. Client site is a large motel ( and one of thier guest services is free wireless internet). This Desktop connects to a d-link router which connects to HP Procurve 24 port managed switch (on port 24). HP Switch has other connections to the business WAP's (4 of them), and to the Server, a Dell Poweredge 8xx. The desktop's primary purpose is to display a bunch of wireless security cameras in the proprietary cam s/w application and then on a web interface . The web interface is supposed to come up at the address 192.168.1.1(and a string of other CHARACTERS).
symptoms: Internet Explorer will no load ANY websites. None.
Additional information:
- system rebooted NUMEROUS TIMES. - Camera maintenance/setup app can "See" 9 of 11 cameras. ( I think two have lost their SETTINGS, possible power fail, not confirmed.) - Cam recording s/w cam "see" 7 cameras ( not all 11 but that I think is a different problem). - Tech support at parent company confirms that 9 cams are connecting to various of the 4 WAPS. So, I should expect to see 9, and I also know the 4 WAP's are functioning. - All cameras are assigned unique static IP/PORT (eg 192.168.1.8:88, 192.168.1.7:87....) - I can ping those cameras that I can get a picture from the recording s/w. - my IP MUST be set to 192.168.1.250 - my Gateway MUST be set to 192.168.1.251 - subnet is obviously 255.255.255.0
- I can try to log in to the router and am challenged, but nobody knows the admin password. I should probably reset the router, but am uncomfortable blowing the setting away without having them recorded somewhere.
- I've tried various configurations of hardware, and there is still a D-link wireless access point that seems to have no purpose, and has since been removed (by me). All applications had functioned fine without this D-LINK WAP connected.
- ALL the cameras on the site were working 3 weeks ago... which is LONG after I had been called in to resolve some other issues with the network. The client explains that camera web interface "Just stopped working one day".
- The hotel tech support indicates that the managed port on the HP Procurve is "wide open". I had though that they may had enabled some firewalling or something around the time of the reported failure, but that is not the case. I am supposed to call back this client today or tomorrow and (attempt) to fix this, but I'm out of options.
-Firewalls - Windows & an expired copy of Norton AV - turned off.
Thanks for taking a peek at this. S.J. ============================== Network diagnostics yeild the following:
