| Answer» The simplest virions consist of two\xa0basic\xa0components: nucleic acid (single- or double-stranded RNA or DNA) and a protein coat, the capsid, which functions as a shell to protect the\xa0viral\xa0genome from nucleases and which during infection attaches the virion to specific receptors exposed on the prospective host\xa0cell.\xa0Viruses\xa0vary in their\xa0structure. A\xa0virus\xa0particle consists of DNA or RNA within a protective protein coat called a capsid. The shape of the capsid may vary from one type of\xa0virus\xa0to another. The capsid is made from the proteins that are encoded by\xa0viral\xa0genes within their genome. | |
