Answer» The taxonomic categories, which are always used in hierarchial classification of organisms are called obligate categories. The taxonomic categories from species to kingdom are broad categories or obligate categories. However, taxonomists have developed sub-categories in this hierarchy to facilitate more sound and scientific placement of various taxa.Intermediate categories are sub-phyla, sub-classes, sub-orders, sub-families, sub-genera, varieties or sub-species. The number of similar charactersdecreases from the lowest rank to the highest rank. The hierarchy includes seven obligate categoriesthat is kingdom, division, family, or phylum, class, order, genus and species. In order to make taxonomic position of species more precise, certain categories have been added to this list. These are known as intermediate categories. For example, subkingdom, super phylum or super division, sub divisionetc.. |
