What is the difference between the structure and functions of vacuoles of plant and animal cells? |
| Answer» Plant cell has only one large vacuole that covers almost 90% cellular space sometimes. Plant cells needs larger vacuole because vacuole helps them to maintain turgor pressure within the cell. Vacuoles store water and become turgid when water enters the cell through osmosis. When cell loses water vacuoles helps the cell to retain the shape. Vacuoles also maintain the osmotic concentration within the cell.Animal cells have one or more vacuoles which are smaller in shape. In animal cell the main function of vacuoles is to store nutrients, ions and water. Vacuoles plays an important role in endocytosis and exocytosis. They store the waste material (exocytosis)or food (endocytosis) and transport it inside the cell. Lysosomes secrete its enzymes within it and helps in digestion. bacterias are also engulfed by cell and destroyed in animal vacuole by lysosomal enzymes. | |
