40% of 50 = (40/100) x 50 = 20 

The students scoring less than 40% marks are the students who scored less than 20 marks. From the given table it is observed that there are 5 + 10 = 15 students who scored less than 40% marks. 

∴ Required probability = 15/100 = 3/20.
