11. What qualification should an individual have to contest an (a) election to Lok Sabha (b) electionto Rajya Sabha?

Amember of the Rajya Sabhamust: Must be a citizen of India. Must make and subscribe before somepersonauthorized in that behalf by the Election Commission an oath or affirmation according to the form set out for the purpose in the Third Schedule to the Constitution; Must be at least 30 years old.

For Lok Sabha

b)Must be a citizen of India.

Must not be less than 25 years of age.

Must be a voter for any parliamentary constituency in India.

Candidate of a recognized political party needs one proposer from his constituency for his nomination.

An independent candidate needs ten proposers.

Candidates are required to make a security deposit of ₹10,000.

A person from the reserved category only can contest the election if the Lok Sabha seat is reserved for these categories. However, an SC/ST person can contest the election on an unreserved seat also.
