1) The Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan, was a forest conservation movement in India. It began in 1973 in UTTARAKHAND, then a part of Uttar Pradesh and went on to become a RALLYING point for many future environmental movements all over the world. It created a precedent for starting nonviolent PROTEST in India.

2) He THUS came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organisational, technical, and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the FIRST since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.
