general elections are functioning to elect a national government whereas the by-election are functioning to elect a single MP. general election are held in all constituencies at the same time or same day or either within a few days. and by-election are held only for one constituency to fill the vacancy caused by the death or resignation of the member. general election are held regularly after five years and by-election are held before the expiry of 6 years from the date the seat falls vacant |
