Answer» Great novels (at least those that were popular at the time), set in the period in which they were written, tell us a lot about how people thought and lived. Sometimes it is the absence of things that we might assume would be mentioned, because they were taken for granted. My “view” of the 19th century is surely influenced as much by Jane Austen, Thackeray, Dickens, Trollope as by any formal history, just as H.G.Wells does for that elusive period before the first World War. And to be more “modern”, there is a lived record of Academic life and its absurdities in the second half of the 20th century in the novels of Bradbury or Lodge. They are not “the truth”. but they tell you lots about how people thought about the worlds they lived in |
