: Valency is defined as the number of hydrogen atoms which combine directly or indirectly with one atom of an ELEMENT. Example: One atom of nitrogen COMBINES with THREE atoms of hydrogen to form ammonia gas. The valency of Silicon is 4 as these electrons can be shared with others to complete octet. Thus,the valency of oxygen is 2 as it will gain 2 electrons to complete its octet
