A balloon has a volume of 175 L when filled with hydrogen at a pressure of 1.00 atm. Calculate the volume of the balloon when it rises to a height of 2000 m, where the atmospheric pressure is 0.80 atm. Assume that the temperature is constant.

Answer»

V1 = 175 L

V2 = ?

p1 = 1.0 atm and

p2 = 0.80 atm

As the temperature is constant, therefore by Boyle's law.

p1V1 = p2V2

1 x 175 = 0.80 x V2

or, V2 = 175/0.80 = 218.75 litres
