A car travels up a hill at a constant speed of 37 km/h and returns down the hill at a constant speed of 66 km/h. Calculate the average speed for the whole trip |
|
Answer» Answer: Average speed = 45.74 km/h (approximately ) . Explanation: Define t1= time spent going up HILL . t2=time spent going down the hill. Distance going up hill = 35km/h × t1 hr Distance going down hill = 66km/h×t2 hr since the distance are EQUAL -- 35t1= 66t2 Suppose that it was a really long hill that took 66h to go up. In this case it WOULD take 35h to go down . The total time taken would be -- 66+35 = 101 hr and the total distance covered would be 35km/h × 66 hr + 35km/h × 35hr = 4620km and the average speed would be 4620km/ 101hr = 45.74 km/h Ans.
