A hydraulic automobile lift is used to life a car of mass 3000kg. The cross-sectional area of the piston on which the car is supported is 425cm^(2). What pressure would the smaller piston have to bear if the bigger piston with the car is 3m above the smaller piston? The density of the oil filling the hydraulic machine is 800kg*m^(-3). Let the pistons be of equal mass. |

Answer» Solution :The POSITIONS of the pistions (with a car) of a hydraulic automobile LIFT is Fig. Let the area of the LARGER PISTON = `A_(2)` and the area of the smaller piston = `A_(1)`. If the pressure applied on the smaller piston is `p_(1)`, then according to Pascal.s law, `p_(1)` = pressure on the larger piston + pressure exerted by a 3m LIQUID column `W/A_(2)+` pressure exerted by a 3m liquid column[W = weight of the car] = `(3000xx9.8)/(425xx10^(-4))+3xx800xx9.8=7.155xx10^(5)N*m^(-2)`. |
