The nodal musculature has the ability to generate action POTENTIALS without any external stimuli. The SAN can generate the maximum number of action potentials that is 70 - 75 per minute. It is responsible for initiating and maintaining the rythmic contractile activity of the heart it is KNOWN as pacemaker. The SAN plays a major role in cardiac cycle by GENERATING an action potential which stimulates both atria to undergo a simultaneous contraction. |
