1.

A point is such that its distance from the point (3,0) is twice its distance from the point (-3,0). Find the equation of the locus.

Answer»

SOLUTION :
Given that `barPB = 2barPB`
or, `sqrt((X-3)^2 + y^2) = 2sqrt((x+3)^2 + y^2)
or , `x^2 + 9 - 6x + y^2`
=`4(x^2 + 9 + 6x + y^2)`
= `4x^2 + 36 + 24X + 4y^2`
or, `3x^2 + 3y^2 + 30x + 27 = 0`
or, `x^2 + y^2 + 10x + 9 = 0`
which is the locus of the point P(x,y).
