A sample of nitrogen gas occupies a volume of 1.000 L at a pressure of 0.500 atm at 40ºC. Calculate the pressure if the gas is compressed at 225 cm3 at – 6ºC.

Answer»

P1 = 0∙500 atm, P2 =?

V2\(\frac{225}{1000}\) = 0.225 L

T1 - 273 + 40 = 313 K

T2 = 273 + 6 = 267 K

By applying ideal gas equation,

\(\frac{P_1V_1}{T_1}=\frac{P_2V_2}{T_2}\)

P2\(\frac{P_1V_1\times T_2}{T_1\times V_2}\)

\(\frac{0.500\times 1\times267}{313\times0.225}\)

P2 = 1.89 atm
