No. of students get down at the second bus stop = 2x

No. of students get down at the third bus stop = 8

Remaining students in the bus = 5

⇒ x + 2x +8 + 5 = 40

⇒ 3x + 13 = 40

⇒ 3x = 40 – 13

⇒ 3x = 27

⇒ x = 27/3

⇒ x = 9

∴ The number of students got down in the first bus stop = 9.

No. of students got down in second stop = 2x = 2 × 9 = 18.
