(a) Which gas is produced when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a reactive metal? Write the chemical reaction when iron reacts with dilute H2SO4. (b) What would you observe when Zinc is added to a solution of iron (II) sulphate? Write the chemical reaction that takes place. |

Answer» (a) When dilute HCl react with reactive metals like alkali metal or alkaline metal, hydrogen gas is liberated. For example: Mg + 2HCl ⇾ MgCl2 + H2 Reaction when iron reacts with dilute H2SO4 Fe(s) + H2SO4 (aq.) ⇾ FeSO4(aq.) + H2(g). (b) When zinc is added to solution of iron (II) sulphate, the colour of iron sulphate solution changes from green to colourless. It is because zinc is more reactive than iron, therefore, it displaces iron from its solution of iron sulphate and a grey precipitate of iron and a colourless solution of zinc sulphate is formed. Zn(s) + FeSO4 (aq.) ⇾ ZnSO4 (aq.) +Fe(s). |
