A wire of length I and radius of cross section is suspended vertically. If Y is Young.s madulus and d is density of the wire, find the increase in length of the wire due to its own weight .

Answer»

Solution :ELONGATION of wire on streching `e=(Fl)/(AY)`
Here stretching force F = Mg (weight of the wire) will ACT at the centre of gravity of the wire i.o. LENGTH of wire which is stretched will be 1/2.
Then `e=(Mgl//2)/(AY)` but`M=dA l and e=(d Al^(2)g)/(2YA)=(l^(2)dg)/(2Y)`
