1.

An athlete felt muscular pain after a race. 1. Explain this in terms of anaerobic respiration? 2. Name any two microorganisms in which anaerobic respiration occurs 3. Glycolysis is common for both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. In glycolysis, there is a net gain of 8 ATP. But in anaerobic respiration the net gain is only 2 ATP. Give reason.

Answer»

1. Athletes felt muscular pain is due to the inadequacy of O2. In the absence of O2 partial oxidation takes place. It involves the formation of pyruvic acid followed by lactic acid.

2. Yeast & Lactobacillus.

3. After the formation of pyruvic acid, 2 NADPH molecules are utilised for the formation of Lactic acid. So the net gain of ATP in Anaerobic respiration is 2 ATPs.
