1.

An ideal gas is compressed at a constant temperature; will its internal energy increase or decrease?

Answer»

As per first law of thermodynamics, conservation of energy is dq = du + pdV, where

dq = thermal energy of gas

du = change in internal energy of gas

pdV = work done by gas in expanding due to change in volume dV

If T = const., dT = 0 and d(pV) = 0 as pressure and

If T = const., dT = 0 and d(pV) = 0 as pressure and volume are inversely proportional. Also, dq = pdV,

which shows that there is no change in internal energy.
