An ideal inductor does not consume any power even though both V and I are non zero. Explain in brief.

The power consumed in an ac circuit is given by

P_a = E_vI_v cos Φ where Φ is the phase difference between E and I

For an inductor Φ = 90°

∴ cos Φ = 0

∴ P_a = E_v x I_v x 0 =0

∴ An inductor consumes no power.
